"It's over it's over speak to speak to the fans through your league. Mandated Wednesday appearance is some more on that Stewart's drama, a more keys pouncey and juju Smith Schuster asked about Antonio Brown at the Pro Bowl this week said pouncey where band of brothers who've been together a long time. You can't tell me a great phone conversation or sit down can't get things right juju Smith had this to say. Aby. You got you. Back. You guys. Welcome. Yeah. I mean. He still has some accounting to do and Jud you might be saying the quote unquote, right things, by the way, juju Smith Schuster, a Thursday guest of this program in Atlanta next week. He'll be at the Super Bowl who's just he's all kinds of awesome, busy exactly is exactly the kid that you want to head out there as your star in your face of your franchise and being in the community and having fun and being a millennial. I'm just being terrific. And I think his emergence is playing into the whole thing between Antonio and Ben. Do they get you get the sense that? Brown's gonna be on the Steelers next year, right? Dantonio is going to be on the Steelers. I dunno art, Rooney says said it wasn't then he's like saying it's now, I guess it's more possible. Unless somebody is look somebody's gotta make the offer they can't refuse. They got three years of thirty nine million dollars left on his contract. That is extremely affordable. So that's one thing to look about. You wanna talk about drama. I mean, certainly what was behind the curtain going on in Cleveland. We knew it was dysfunctional. But we got a lot more detail to it. And he's one of the best in the business in terms of long form in terms of writing. And in terms of putting it out there. He is Seth worker chamo- of ESPN ESPN dot com. Thanks for calling in Seth. Hey, great to talk to you again. Rum. I'm good. You've you've given us lots to chew on right here. How long have you been, you know, digging into the Browns organization for this piece? I don't know. Exactly. You know, what I think look tension in a building that stuff exists? I think what matters is when there's something field that's at stake. And what I saw Baker Mayfield become a force in waiting during the second half of the season. I automatically was thinking like what is going to happen here because this could go great or it could be red, right? Eighty eight the drive to fumble the shot and Baker Mayfield. And that's what I was trying to try to understand is it, you know. How decisions are made what it's like to work for Jimmy house on what this means when you have a precocious young quarterback who looks like he's going to be a superstar for a long time. Yeah. And and that said, and that's why I wanted to have you on miss much of your piece Dow dives deep and very detailed into the banner Lombardi to Sashi Brown years. And then when it comes to the here and now. I'm wondering what you were able to glean about the ultimate question. Which is what you just said is why you started deep digging in here is what do you think is going to happen based on what has happened before? With Baker Mayfield. John Dorsey now with Freddie kitchens that the troika that is now in place of quarterback general manager and coach Seth I have. I have no idea and that to me is what made it so fascinating. Because you've had a consistent run under under owner can be how some of these sort of arranged marriages and to me ends up being the arbiter or the tiebreaker in creates a bunch of backstabbing, and distrust and problems and obviously losing, and that's. You're going to you know, how important it is for young quarterbacks to have continuity. I mean, look at Alex Smith how many often coordinators that guy had three is for five years at his career. And so we're Baker Mayfield to succeed. Jimmy, how things that he has not done before one is higher. Well, and the other one is is be patient and stay the course. And we'll just see what happens. I mean. I think there's some reasons for hope given the pretty kitchens is clearly John Dorsey higher in the table report to John Dorsey not to Jimmy housing. But we'll see I think they'd like the jury is out. So in terms of the flow chart best you can tell they're in Cleveland because again all these stories about what was happening with you Jackson, and what was happening with Sashi Brown. What happened with banner and what happened with Lombardi? And what happened with Ray farmer? I mean that would just keep me up at night. I knew how bad it might have been. But this really puts into black and white just how bad it was do you think? That Dorsey is in charge and and hassle. I'm just gonna let him do his thing right now. Do you think I think so I think so I mean, I think the door. He's got a lot of political maneuvering and power in there because he did draft Baker Mayfield. But we will see I mean, I think that like, you know, I reached back to the beginning of Jimmy Johns ownership to not just show how he hires people, and ultimately how he fires them. It was very important for me to like get inside the details about how these dismissal had gone. But the other reason was because remember he was his offices for his family business. If he brilliantly turned into a billion dollar raided by the FBI and the IRS, and I think if that had not happened the Browns wouldn't be this way under Jimmy because he wasn't going to be in Cleveland all the time. The family was always gonna stay in Knoxville and would not rate happened. And he eventually had to sort of let go that former life. And put his energy and his identity into the Browns. That's where I think you saw a lot of the problems coming. It's a we'll just see what happened. I don't know how this is going to all play out Seth workers some of ESPN and ESPN dot com. The clash of the Cleveland Browns how Hugh Jackson Jimmy Haslem and Baker Mayfield collided. Check it out on ESPN dot com and ESPN it's a it's a great read from your reporting. Let's get into some of the here. And now from your reporting who's choice was Baker Mayfield was at Dorsey. Hugh Jackson didn't want him. Or he said that. Todd. Haley poisoned the team and Baker Mayfield against him. I mean what what happened earlier this year best you can tell Seth. Okay. So Baker was basically, a unanimous choice. I mean, people were a little worried about his height, but it was essentially a unanimous choice, and I might be told the during the Sashi Brown era. Some of the research that they were doing actually had bakers number one. So Baker goes number one and then hard knocks happens and immediate put the Browns issues on full display in front of everyone to watch and enjoy and consume. And then you see the team on the field this year, it was really odd. Because in one sense they were going to overtime almost half of their games during the first part of the season. So they were playing Hartford, Hugh, and yet you saw you talking about how he had to take more control of the offense with Haley Baker wasn't playing. Well, you know, obviously, he's a rookie. So it's going to take some time. But it wasn't like this looks like they had it together. And so then they lose to the Steelers the Monday after the game John Dorsey and owner Jimmy house come into hue Jackson's office. And they tell them they're going to go with a different direction. She was upset about this. He felt like that he has written the team out during these tough years when they were going to lose and everyone knew. They were going to lose. And so he was shocked and he asked why and John Dorsey said because the team was quitting. And that I'm told very much upset, Hugh because again, they hit gone to overtime, and we're very close to having a really good record at that point. And he told them to get the f out of his office. Yeah. That'll get you fired. So so here's the thing. I'm wondering though, okay. Because from what we found out on this show. We had the broadcaster iron eagle on the show a few weeks ago and he did that last Steelers Browns game. And I asked him about the situation that he saw in Cleveland playing out. He told a story about him and Dan Fouts going into a pre broadcast meeting with the head coach, Hugh Jackson and hall of Famer Dan Fouts asked you how come you're not running more Oklahoma type plays for Baker Mayfield. Why aren't you doing more of that to which I and said, Hugh Jackson said, I agree. And they were just kind of looking at each other going what sort of answer is that from the head coach of a team. So from your reporting, what do you think was happening there with him and Haley, and and Baker and clearly something was dysfunctional that became more functional with of all people as you point on your piece. Greg williams. So what do you think Steph? Yeah. Ooh. House awarded Hugh Jackson to just be a sort of one of those head coaches. It's like a glorified play caller. He wanted him to be a leader and be more of a CEO. So they bring in Todd Haley, which you Jackson was on board with and then they bring in they bring in Todd Haley in gives them autonomy over the and the Austrian wasn't playing. Well, I'm told that he wanted to assert some control over the offense at which Haley did not take well to and so you had this weird situation where Hugh Jackson the head coach the team. He feels like he can't control over his own offense. You have Todd Haley who you know, basically, doing whatever she wants because he was given that option to do. So and. After all of this. You know, it's clearly not working, and it's starting to spill out into the public and they're arguing Jackson office office, and then both of them end up getting fired at the same day. And so I don't think the offense dramatically teams after Todd. Haley was gone. I think that like pretty kitchen admitted as much as at his press conference. You know, the same play. They were doing the same things. I think that like. Team needed that team. Definitely just needed a new dose of energy in leadership. And I think the Greg Williams to his credit and Freddie kitchens we're able to provide it. So then what what it based on your your discussions and everybody either on record or whatever you could share as background with us here. Seth from what you've gleaned from all the people the animus between Baker Mayfield in and Hugh Jackson would be would be what. Okay. I mean where where did that all come Friday played out? Well, I I think I think Baker was accurate when he said, you know, I think he called him a fake on Instagram. And I think that's what he saw. I'm not saying, it's totally legitimate. But I think like there was a sense of the building..

"Hugh Jackson Jimmy has them. And Baker Mayfield collided when they were all together as members of the Cleveland Browns. We can't wait to hear how Cleveland reacted to that. And how the Cleveland Browns a handling all this attention on and off the football field that's bringing offering emit gold of ESPN Cleveland who joins us on Freddie and Fitz. Simons Amit first things first I think that we have hard knocks parts of the Cleveland Browns at twenty nineteen. So that's what I want right now for that Cleveland Browns team and for HBO hard knocks but realistically when this became public. What was the reaction in Cleveland about how all of this was converging between Baker Mayfield Jimmy has lem and Hugh Jackson. Well, the whole dynamic a Baker Mayfield and Hugh Jackson is Baker call them. And after point everybody in Cleveland. Hey, I mean, she didn't have a lot of back in any way. But what is Baker Mayfield said he wasn't a fan of Hugh Jackson, the entire city Canada dawn on and you know, the story that was reading today indefinitely grabbed everybody attention to guys. I was really surprised that a lot of fancy Fleetwood were upset it may were they were kind of mad that the story was out today. A lot of a lot of fans feel like it. We know that the Browns have been a laughing stock, and we know that the Browns has been bad for a very very long time. But now having Baker Mayfield and having a new culture. Freddie kitchens. Everyone in the city's really excited. I mean, seventy one. Yeah. That's not good. If you're the patriots. So that's great. If you're the Cleveland Browns. So a lot of fans felt like man, there's a lot of positive momentum. Why do we have to have somebody bringing up old bad? So it was a lot of people upset today. Just with the the big story that was released in Cleveland people upset in the judge to the story was. About the owner and Jimmy has lem and how there's a lot of dysfunction surrounding him. Go back to win when he bought the Browns to right now. And today after this story has been released and the reporting from separate sham. What was your reaction when you saw all of this, especially behind the scenes regarding the owner of the Browns and Jimmy house lamb? Well, my first reaction was like, yeah. We know. Jimmy, not very good owner. We don't. More here. Eight cleveland. So I wasn't very surprised. There were a lot of things that were in that article that kind of you know, I kind of blew me away the whole, you know, Jimmy has want teddy Bridgewater because of a handshake and the council voted for the one hire McDermott say coach and decided no I'm go against what my front office is telling me, and I'm gonna hire Jackson. It was things like that. And even snafu on social media that really can't opened up. Everybody's eyes may think will work crazy there. But we didn't know the details, but we knew things were bad bear. And listen Judy has some terrible as he has been leaving only gave his wife credited. Well, she's on. On to. But we know that they try doing all the wall moves, but they have definitely been trying because listen, I don't know a billionaire this world that wants to be a laughing stock and may had been that in the NFL. So I think they meant well, but they just made every move they could possibly make. And they changed that when they hired John Dorsey and everybody was just hoping they can continue to step back and just letting Jared take over everything that's going on with the Browns emit, golden ESPN Cleveland with Freddie and Fitz Simons on ESPN radio and the ESPN app part of the article that said worker Shan road about Jimmy is that he wants to be a football guy. And there are those who work for him. We'll tell you. But there's a mix of warmth and caution in their voices. How much of this could really retard the progress of Cleveland because Jimmy has lem wants to be a football guy. At this point right now today, I don't think it would be very much. It was of Dorsey came in John Dorsey put a lot of equity into the relationship with Jimmy had won by Drafi Baker Mayfield number one overall by going against the grain award where everybody said what is wrong with John Dorsey drafted Dinsdale, awarded maybe possibly the Pro Bowl after is rookie year. You saw what he deal with job when people felt like you had to get saquon Barkley. So there's a lot of equity that John Dorsey has twenty with Jimmy has won so much. So and we've seen a lot of introducing new coach press conferences here in Cleveland in. They're always they always have Jimmy has been sitting at the podium. He wasn't there. It was John Dorsey. So I believe that right now Jimmy B has them as well longer in that we have someone who knows what they're doing. So it's best than we do. Step back. You spent a billion dollars you're going to want control. Don't fault them at all. On that. I mean after twenty dollars kinda. Kinda what happened to it? Building new really gonna wanna beat hands on. So I understand it. But you know, generally, really good moves nothing. They understand that Jonah knows what he's doing. So it's best that they let him. Yeah. But when you spend a billion dollars on something you don't want porn being broadcast facility. We were alluding to earlier unless that's what your answer. That's what you're saying. I'm just saying. Depending.

"The class of the Cleveland Browns how Hugh Jackson Jimmy has lem and Baker Mayfield collided in at the reading article, the first thing that came to my mind was HBO we need to have the Cleveland Browns on hard knocks the two thousand nineteen because if they were that entertaining, and we didn't know any of this that was part of the article written by Seth wicker sham and now going forward with a better football team and Baker Mayfield HBO needs to make that call and have the Cleveland Browns. Part of hard knocks in back to back years one. I don't disagree with you two inning going to happen. I know knowing kitchen, it's my it's my world. You're right. No shot. He will allow that to happen going to the NFL rules right that you don't have to be on back to back seasons. So that, but I'm with you. It would be remarkably entertaining, and there are several things that came away with from this hypnotic -ly mesmerizing. From set worker sham one. I'm not surprised that Jimmy has lem in his company. The you know, the flying Jays. Yeah. Gas stations, we're we're audited investigated and a bunch of people were arrested by the FBI. Because man, you you read this in he comes across as a guy who will befriend, you you think that you have his trust your his guy and the next thing, you know, you're fired because you may have said one wrong word or in teddy Bridgewater case when they were trying to figure out whom they they're going to draft a quarterback. He wanted Menzel the rockstar, and he didn't like teddy Bridgewater because of his handshake. Therefore, he told his coaches and general managers. Nope. I don't like that guy. Because of the way he shook his hand. That's why owners like Robert Kraft. They're wildly successful. They stay out of football things like football people make football decisions when guys like Jimmy has lem who want to be football guy as an owner of a team. They hold franchises back because they try to make football decision to your point. Because Jimmy has mom could set everything back because if you're the Cleveland Browns, you believe that for the first time when you think about it since they've been back in Cleveland ever since the NFL at the heavy lost the franchise. An Art Modell moved to Baltimore and the NFL granted that city the Cleveland Browns again for the first time ever, it seems as if they're not just on the right path for year that this could be two or three years down the line, especially when they have a. Guy. Baker Mayfield that they need to be a superstar that has all the makings on and off the football field the game on and off the football field to be a superstar. But when you have the guy paying the checks in Jimmy has lamb that wants to be a football guy that wants to make sure that he immerses himself. He wants us to death wants to be Cleveland's answer to Jerry Jones. If he does not back off that mentality. Then in may not even matter what Baker Mayfield is trying to do on the football field because that guy is going to set back everything that Baker Mayfield. And the Browns seem to be on the right path that doing that they may not be able to accomplish one thing that he allowed to happen was having the head coach and Freddie kitchens right named head coach and that was not a popular decision. Most people wanted in Cleveland, Greg Williams, the interim head coach to be the guy he made the right decision on that one. And I think that I'm slightly biased here having known pretty kitchen since he was a player, and I was a student. Reported alabama. And he was a quarterback in Alabama going way back man to the mid to late nineties. Freddie hates lose a coin toss..

"Of the Cleveland Browns how Hugh Jackson Jimmy has lem and Baker Mayfield collided. Seth first foremost. Great. It's a great read and it really deep dives into some of the dysfunction for the Browns. We all sort of knew about the rumors with it. But when you sat down to actually put this piece together what surprised you the most in what you've found. Well, I think they want interested in me. Most was you watch Baker Mayfield come on during the last eight games last season. Like, you know, like a force in waiting. I mean, you know, he was completely immune to the Browns stored history. And so when I saw that happen it apparently made my sort of repertory will intended go up because there's another force that it was colliding with and that's the Cleveland Browns history. And you know, the fact that to me has can't stick with a regime for more than eighteen months two years. And we all know that, you know, one of the most vital things for young quarterbacks is continuity, and so not to be too crass. But it was like the only thing could ruin baking. Baker mayfield. Decides injury would be the Cleveland Browns frontier. So I wanted to try to get inside. Like, what's it like to work for Jimmy d has them and how decisions are made in. What's it like to be in that building and trying to look as best? I can to use that stuff going forward to look at how it might impact. Baker for better or for worse. Yeah. You just touched on one of the most interesting parts of the story to me what which was the idea that. Well, there are endless amounts of coaches who seem to still be on the payroll or GM's or people that have been hired and fired. The biggest casualty has actually been ideas because house looms never patient enough to allow anything to be seen through. And I think from a far we all watch and just make fun of the continual, you know, churning and spitting out of people. But looking at it as closely as you did you start to realize it's because he's willing to dive in an idea, but he is never willing to see it through. Is there any reason to believe that because of the way he didn't have his friends at the draft? And he didn't introduce their new coach. And he let other people do the job. They're supposed to do that something has changed and he's willing to trust in his current quarterback, coach, GM, etc. Yeah. Baby. I think that there's reason to believe that, you know, time will tell though I mean, I think it's he's out. I think when you look at Baker, you know, it's not only that he needs, you know, look Jimmy house on what he likes to do is set up. Shotgun marriages. And so what you have is a GM and a coach who were hired separately reach other like, for instance, when the team went out to hire a do coach a couple of years ago, everybody in the executive executive team voted for Sean McDermott to be the only one who voted voted for Hugh Jackson and that ended up being the head coach. And so it was a shotgun marriage with Sashi Brown. And what happens is. Jimmy, ends up being the type raker, but the bad position to be in because it just makes people mistrust each other in backstab each other and fight and do anything they can to be the person to talk to Jimmy last and things that happened with this latest. Hiring is the John Dorsey is it pretty kitchens reports to John Dorsey. And so in theory, at least it'll eliminate the appeals court that has usually been Jimmy has them and force them to be on the same page and figure things out on.

"Mill and a lot of Chris for for Twitter and Facebook and shows like this one where Hasslow essentially bought the team then got involved with the scandal involving his own private business. And that sent everything twisting sideways where has them through his entire world into the Cleveland Browns, and apparently his management style is to talk to everybody in open door for everybody to talk to anybody that he encounters in the hallway as it close talker. He's coverage, and and all that does is allows opinions to go into the ear gate of the billionaire owner and people think that he's you're the only one that he's asking to confide in. And apparently he's doing it to everybody asking scouts what they think of the coach. And the coaches what they think of scouts and everybody's wondering well who's talking about who? And that just create some sort of I Ness that gets even worse because everybody kept getting fired over and over again. Joe banner and Mike Lombardi his initial general manager, and you know, COO CEO of the operation. He heard apparently Cording separation that they argued in the draft room or arguing getting ready for the draft. He calls Rafe armor and Ray, basically says that's normal. Then all of a sudden he thought he basically told the owner something that he needed to hear and what the owner apparently heard was confirmation that both Lombardi and banner should be out. And Ray farmer got hired later that day. And according to this piece farmer was surprised, and he was now the second youngest general manager in the game. With a huge draft in front of him with two first round selections. And according to this piece, Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel were both drafted in the first round. We know how disastrous those picks were the first Gilbert was the guy that wanted and the second Mandel was a guy that the owner wanted and then he wanted to flip. A second round. He had an opportunity to flip a second round selection. To the Texans for Brian Hoyer. And he didn't do it because we're was all pissed off about what was going on about with Mandel. How about that folks? Browns fan. How do you like that? Brian Hoyer was flipping out over Johnny Manziel being drafted. And the gentleman's is like, okay, I hear everybody a year. And then obviously that turned out to be a total complete mess in horror show that resulted in the Hugh Jackson hiring, which according to this piece the rest of the front office that was filling in for farm or that supplanted farmer Sashi Brown and deep deep Edessa moneyball crew. Everybody voted against you Jackson. They wanted Sean McDermott your current coach of the Buffalo Bills. And the only one wanted Hugh Jackson Jimmy who hadn't hired him. M E Sashi Brown general manager didn't want to have Hugh Jackson hard and how to work with you. And apparently the first blow up came because Sashi Brown traded away. Andy Lee, the punter. For another punter in a draft choice that eventually turn into Jarvis Landry. Interestingly enough allowed them to draft Jarvis Landry. I mean to acquire Jarvis Landry. From miami. And Jackson got off on the wrong foot with Sashi Brown. And they thought they were gonna win seven games. They won one. How about that? According to this article. And I still can't believe I looked this up. I looked this up. I still cannot believe. That they had Hugh Jackson coming in. And they had the number two overall selection in the draft and made it and take once and they let Philadelphia come up and take him. They didn't start off the new head coach with a quarterback and in the next year when it all fell a crap, and they had the first overall selection and the one in the middle of the first round twelfth overall because Philadelphia traded to them for the Lynch trade. That they chose mile gap miles guy. I overall Cording this piece Hugh wanted Myles Garrett makes every sense over Trubisky who they did not want. Hugh did not want said he wouldn't back him up publicly or privately, which is amazing. Right because well, hold on a second. First of all, I was just kinda surprised that Trubisky was viewed as the best quarterback in that draft in the Cleveland draft room as well because we all know, certainly didn't Chicago. Yeah..
