We have a lot to get to this morning. Including too deep dives on impeachment and Donald Trump's threat to national security but I that tense exchange between former Hud Secretary Julio Castro and Vice President Joe Biden over healthcare quickly became one of the most talked about moments of Thursday's democratic debate media fact checkers quickly jumped on Castro's accusation declaring incorrect though he continues to stand by it and the takeaway for many debate watchers was the Castro had harmed his own campaign several twenty twenty contenders Ziff since rushed in to Biden's defense condemning Castro for what some are calling it an unnecessary swipe at Biden's age team Biden and team Castro continued the feud off the debate stage with Biden's camp crying cheap shot and Castro countering that he was just back checking Biden not hitting him for his page but Joe Biden didn't exactly leave the debate unscathed either the day after the debate jokes about Biden and record players yes he mentioned record players began the shift into a sharp critique I on social media including from my next guest and then columns and commentary over Biden's response to debate moderator Lindsay Davis Davis's question on repairing the legacy of slavery now make sure that every single child doesn't fact have three four and five five-year-old's go to school school daycare school we bring social workers into homes pairs to help them deal with how to raise their children. It's not that don't WANNA help. They don't they don't know quite what to do. Play the radio. Make sure the television. Excuse me make sure you have record player on the phone. Make sure the kids here words a kid coming from a very poor school are very poor background. We'll hear four million words fewer spoke at the time they get there joining me now. MSNBC eight political analyst on on geared at us who is the author of winners take all and on on a Jamila Smith of rolling stone in response to that fired off a column in which he said it's time for Joe to go. He's a democrats need an anti-racist nominee to run against a racist Donald trump the third debate confirmed biden isn't isn't up to the task but before that even came out. I noticed your tweets you on a tweet storm about that comment that answer that Joe Biden gave save and this is what you wrote Joe Biden's answer on how to address the legacy of slavery was appalling and disqualifying you wrote it ended in a sermon implying that black parents don't know how to raise their own children and said this can't go on in response to Tim Wise anti-racism Educator Tim wise who wrote sorry but when you you want to be president and you respond to a question about the legacy of slavery and how to address it by discussing better parenting and putting on the record player at night you're indicating and utter lack of depth on a serious matter and you responded to that thing a lack of of debt and racism those are pretty strong words on so. I'm going to let you explain your position on on Biden's answer. You know I think on Thursday night without intending to Joe Biden threw himself a retirement party and I don't say that lightly I don't say the idea of him disqualifying himself lightly but the reality is this country is in a battle for it's all an existential battle L. in which race is at the very heart in which white supremacy is at the very heart and there have always been and this is really important to understand to traditions to manifestations of racism in American life. There's racism with a hood which is very easy to see and there's racism with a smile. There's the racism of firebombing churches which is very obvious and then there's the racism of can I touch your hair. There's the racism that is flagrant and the racism that is insidious and it is very clear and everybody knows this. The Joe Biden is not out of that tradition of the evil tradition Shen of racism of the hood and he's not a white supremacist but Joe Biden has revealed himself to be deeply steeped in anchored in and unwilling to cut cut ties to that second subtler tradition of racism in American life and we gotta be real about that. We have to be real about that. This is the kind of comments that by the way any person of color and black people especially have encountered all the time at work all the time on the street all the time in various aspects of life it it is Thanksgiving uncle racism right and if you are running against a guy who's big ideas tax cuts. Maybe it's fine when you're running running against a white nationalist what you are going to do is you are going to neutralize the central issue in this race by putting forward someone who has simply not changed from the mad men era at last night the yesterday during the afternoon. Something interesting happened to me after I had done these tweets and talked about this I was approached approached via twitter privately by a trump campaign organization official trump campaign related organization the the privately messaged me to try to share additional videos from other times about Joe Biden saying similar racists things now. I'm not interested in amplifying bovine trump campaign talking points. Why is that significant? They are ready. They know this is a good issue for them because if they can show that you know what he's kind of set a lot of things also he he kind of said white people don't owe anything for the past in this country he also said bussing is a bad idea. He also has said some African American. One African American candidate is clean and articulate apparently in contrast to others he also said the thing about the Indian accent he also gave a lot of women too many back rubs it neutralizes the contrast contrast and they are very excited about this and that is an excellent point that one of the challenges particularly for more liberal more progressive voters in two thousand sixteen was this argument which is actually flagrantly absurd that there was not a big difference between Hillary Clinton Donald Trump not a big enough difference for people to see there. There's sort of two sides of the same coin kind of argue which is absurd because Hillary Clinton obviously intelligent. She really very experienced leader Donald Trump donald trump but the risk that that could happen again. I guess what you're talking about now. The counterfacts will let me give you the counterfactual to that. which is that a country country that would elect donald trump the kind of people who would vote for him but maybe don't like things about his character might feel comfortable saying we'll all all go to Joe Biden because Joe Biden kind of shares my General Mike Generalized Discomfort in certain areas and makes the kind of mistakes that I might right make if I'm that person and makes the kind of fumbles that I might too so he's kind of more like me or my uncle or like my family and so that you could take marginal Argenteuil voter in the middle who's an independent who's just said I couldn't see a huge difference so I went with trump and I really don't like him and move over what do you what do you make of that counter factor which I've actually heard people saying about this exchange? I don't think the antidote to the poison of outright white supremacy is milk doc toast unconscious bias and a kind of white default Joe Biden. Yes I think there are I think is actually the whole point. There are a lot of people in America I think they are not that many people in America who are like Donald Trump. There's a lot of people in America who are like Joe Biden but the reality is they many of them millions of them actually and we don't talk about about this enough have been on a path in the last ten or twenty years of getting better by the way there's some other people pretty close to Joe Biden's age in this rates and they don't have the same call him. I think older right I think Bernie Sanders and here we are the same age or one. They don't have the same problem so this is a problem of someone look the things he says the things Donald Trump says let's just put it this way. The things Donald Trump says have kind of been out of bounds for a very long time the things Joe Biden says we're not out of bounds when Joe Biden was my age Asia and that is a hard thing. This country has changed our norms have changed. We have not realized that things that nobody ever thought what about in the mad men era were basically completely exclusionary of women and people of color we enlarged understanding and many millions of Americans reckons have enlarged their understanding. I was talking to my parents and my mom was reading this book white fragility for school and as an immigrant to this country. It has raise things for her that she didn't see that she now has language for her own experience which is experience Joe. Biden has so clearly not changed washed. He's not changed. He is the person that we all know who who is so steeped in the idea that Americanise means whiteness his policies. These are great. His policies are fine but that's not the issue here. This is someone who can't see and when you are asked one month after the four hundred year anniversary the first enslaved Africans coming to these shores which is by the way in the New York Times in a prominent enough way that hopefully even Joe Biden site when one month after that you are asked. What do we do about at that legacy since you sir made a comment forty years ago saying you're not responsible for that? What do we do about it Sir and when your answer is black a a morally obtuse point and an evil point in my view given history this country that black people's parenting skills are the problem which is what he said and secondly you make an absurd point which is black people? Don't play enough music. I'm not sure what Black People Joe Biden has encountered in his life that he thinks music is not enough part part of the black experience but between those two things and the rest of that rambling answer this was not a story of just rambling and incoherent. This is a story of someone whose ideas are belong back in the one thousand nine hundred where they came from well. Let me take that part of your point the early part of your point that there are a lot of people like Joe Biden out there in the world which I think is true and you know who really believes that black people okay..

"How do you go back and reestablish norms after processes like that have been broken as badly as they have by this president back with us? Now is former HUD secretary Julio Castro who is now running in the democratic presidential primary. This secretary thank you again on that security clearance issue. I don't know much about your national security background, and the you're a relative hawkish nece on these sorts of issues. But I do want to just get your response. So this current controversy. That's happening. This standoff that's happening now between Democrats and congress who are upset about the way that Trump administration's handling national security and classified information and the Trump administration. It's defenders who were sort of saying this is this is no big deal. It's ironic of based on how he ran his campaign of slandering, Hillary Clinton about her emails or emails, and this administration has been the sloppiest, and that's generous term the sloppiest administration. When it comes to handling classified information and these issues related to national security. My hope is that that congress will continue to assert authority and get a hold of documents to investigate exactly what has happened in terms of the White House, basically overruling the career staff that has made recommendations on whether certain individuals should get security clearance or not you mentioned understanding what the norms were before this ministration busted through all these norms. That's important. I. I think not just with regard to these security Clinton clearances this process, but a whole bunch of other processes within the federal government. I also see that as one of the reasons that. I have I well prepared for this office because I was there before I had the opportunity to see an administration that was actually doing the these things in the right way. And we need to get back to that. We're starting to see another standoff take shape between the congressional Democrats and the administration, particularly the department of Justice has to whether or not the Muller report is going to be released to congress or to the public. And in what form how hard do you think Democrats should push on that if in fact push comes to shove, the American people are with the Democrats on this poll after poll has showed that people want to see the full report. They know that we're not gonna know the full truth until we see the full report. They won't even say how many pages exactly this report is. But they summarize it only with four pages probably for hundreds of pages worth of a report. So. Democrats should keep pushing on that. There's no reason that they should let up on that. And sometimes this issue comes up when people ask well due to folks out on the trail and New Hampshire wherever do they ask you about the mullahs report? You know, it comes up every now, and then, but what people do ask about is accountability and government, they want integrity honesty and accountability in government, and fundamentally that's what this issue is about you unveiled your own immigration proposal today, which is the first in the field from all the democratic candidates. A comprehensive proposal shock. You're talking about the prospect of putting people first putting compassion back at the center of the way that we deal with Gration I feel like on immigration policies since the early days of the Bush administration. There's been this kind of want want pointless talking about comprehensive immigration reform that never has motivating force behind it. Because there's so much disingenuous. Politicking on the issue. Do you feel like you can transcend what has become a not just partisan standoff here? But it's what feels like a cul de sac where no real and substantive policy ever gets developed. I believe so I mean, that's what I'm trying to do with the people I immigration plan that I put out today. Basically Rachel you those folks that saw it today. I hope that they'll go to Julia on for the future dot com, and look it up. I also had a medium post. I'm not buying into the S that basically says that little children and mothers who are desperate and fleeing desperate circumstances. Our national security threat to our nation. "Candidate to seek the twenty twenty presidential nomination. Yes. Charlie former mayor and HUD secretary Julio Castro as, you know, formed an exploratory committee last month, and he has set at announcement for tomorrow morning here in San Antonio to announce whether or not he will formally enter the race for the democratic presidential nomination in twenty twenty. Now, I talked to several very very top level, Texas, political analysts about mayor Castro's possibilities and to a man and woman they all said to thumbs down. Nobody thinks that Houlihan has even a ghost of a chance of being dominated for president by the Democratic Party. And the reason why is interesting especially considering we're talking about a man who's forty four years old and his entire political career. He's been referred to as a. Rising star. But the political analysts say his window is closed as Mark Jones is a political analyst to Rice University told me a his star is definitely not rising anymore. The sun may be setting on the political ambitions of fully on Castro and most of the political analysts say that mayor Castro blew it by declining to be the democrat to oppose Ted Cruz in last year's presidential election. As you know, he was the Democratic Party of Texas first choice when he said, no, they said, well, we gotta find somebody will find this unknown congressman that nobody's ever heard of from El Paso name. Beddoe Arar had like they say the rest is history. And now Beto arc has seized that opportunity to essentially teach Democrats how they can win by losing appealing to the base through social media through his personality and more importantly, building a robust nationwide fundraising network, which he can use if he decides to run for president. And he says down. Announced next month Julio on Castro has none of those and the landscape doesn't favor maverick major mayor Castro either I'd like Barack Obama who essentially emerged from the pack in two thousand eight on the strength of his performance in early debates in early appearances. That's going to be difficult to do with as many as twenty five serious candidates in the race. The Democrats have split up the debates into two separate nights. There's so many people running. So there's gonna be a lot of people like him in the race. And it's going to be very difficult for him to make his Mark. I'd like Donald Trump who again came out of the pack in a much larger field in two thousand sixteen. Donald Trump was already a very very well known individual he'd been in the public eye in this country for twenty years. Houlihan Castro doesn't have that. He was mayor of San Antonio. So we know who he is. But you don't know who he is if you're in Minneapolis, and he was secretary of housing and urban development, which is not exactly a high profile. A cabinet position to have. And interestingly, the polls say the Democrats want somebody due to run in twenty twenty. But when he asked them who they like, they specifically cite Bernie Sanders, and Joe Biden, both of whom are in their mid seventy s neither of them are new, and it seems like they want somebody who can beat President Trump. Now, this doesn't mean that mayor Castro is out, but it's a long shot for him. Definitely. He doesn't have the name recognition. He doesn't have the appeal among Democrats right now, it'll help him that he's Hispanic and one analyst said, maybe it might help him to be named the vice president, which would in fact jumpstart his career. But he spent the last six years the last time he had a big national forum was in the two thousand twelve democratic campaign convention when he gave the keynote address seventy years this a lifetime in politics. And if you walk out on the streets of Seattle it s people who I'm Castro is they're not gonna have any idea. And that's going to be his. First problem. He's going to have to overcome. If he does in fact announce tomorrow that he's running. We don't know that he'll make the announcement tomorrow morning. Well, you just listed numerous reasons, according to political analyst saying why he can't get the nomination. And you mentioned polls and people who right now might not going to give you one reason that he can get the nomination. He's hispanic. Yeah. Yeah. And this country. Well, let's see we had a black. We tried a woman came close. We are. We don't want to go down that road anymore fingers. Maybe time for a Hispanic. Yeah. That will that will definitely be an advantage and everybody concedes that maybe a vice presidential slot because the Democratic Party is now focused on the identity politics that there is concerned that, you know, says a bunch of old white guys who once again are at the top of the polls when it comes to who their nominee is going to be so definitely that will be a plus there is a a state Senator name Richard ahead in West Virginia. Who is also considering a run who's probably about as well known as Hooley Castro. But it's likely that he's going to be the only Latino in the in the democratic field. That will definitely help him to stand out. Well. Him standout enough. Probably not. All right. Jim. We're on the verge of passing the record for the longest government shutdown. We'll get the latest from national correspondent Michael Bauer coming.
