"That's as close as I never can remember it in my lifetime. And but you know, obviously the hoku one narrow though it might be in politics, you know, there's no moral victories, right? A wins and win. So she will be the governor for four more years. And the Democrats still have the majorities, although reduced, they still have the majorities in both the Senate and assembly. So for New York, you know, unfortunately, probably day to day, as you sort of rightly, I think pointed out, not a ton is going to change the elections are behind us. But I do think there are some interesting takeaways in New York, which is that every county across the state, every single one of them. Performed more favorably for Republicans than two years ago. And so hopefully we can build upon, you know, obviously you don't have a gubernatorial candidate every cycle, but hopefully we can build upon this to grow and move New York at least more towards the middle out of super blue, far left ideology that we've seen in the past four years. Rob, let me ask you a little bit about the Zelda race with hulk specifically. I know obviously New York had a great showing. And maybe New York did when, you know, the house for Republicans, right? When you look at zeldin versus hochul, do you think that race was close because people are fed up or because hoku obviously say this way. People were fed up and truly believed in Lee's elden. Do you think it's partially because hulk was a terrible candidate? You know, if this was a maybe a Zelda verse Cuomo race, take out what happened last summer and all those reports. But is this race close as it is today or is this partly just because there is a true movement towards we want Law & Order. We don't want our kids vaccinated. And Kathy hochul is a terrible candidate. You know, I think it's a little bit of probably both of those things. I don't know, I absolutely know. I can tell you, I know the issues, particularly around crime, public safety, Law & Order. And certainly governor huckel's performance around the issues of mandates and what that did to businesses and schools and school kids. I think all of those things absolutely played a role. I think it played a role where it mobilized people in a way that maybe wouldn't have happened in the past or didn't happen in the past. I think Lee zeldin, you know, certainly spoke to those issues. And it was very consistent in this messaging. So I don't think you could ever remove the issues. And that people were frustrated. And the state, by the way, you know, has really lurched to the far left. I mean, I was at a New York City, I think a lot of people kind of go, man, states really moving far to the left. Now that. Issue did not mention, when you talk about the governor and whether she was a good candidate or not, I don't think she ran a great campaign,

"You need to use promo code dynamic dinesh. I'm back and we're talking about the midterms and some results have come in in the last day or so. In fact, I mean I were talking together about results out of New York. A number of congressional races that were poised kind of on the knife's edge or were right in the middle have tipped over into the Republican column. Let's remember, by the way, we think of New York, we're like, wow, New York really? What? But New York is fairly conservative outside of New York City. So as you begin to move Long Island as you move upstate, you republicanism is not uncommon, and in some ways it's even the majority. So it's only because of the dense population of New York that New York is a safely by and large democratic state. But what you have here is races that were that had about an equal number of Republicans and Democrats. So maybe even democratic leaning falling the Republican way. Now what does this mean? Well, it basically helps us in the house. And we have to give credit to this guy Lee zeldin, Lee zeldin ran against Kathy hochul for the governor's race, and he lost, but he lost pretty narrowly. I mean, if you look at those numbers between Zelda and hulk, I mean huckel won it pretty cleanly, but it was not the normal blowout. It wasn't something where hoku got 60 and zeldon got 40. It was something where these guys were just a few points apart and what that means is that Zelda had a sort of coattail in New York. He was able to pull up some of the other Republicans. By the way, this was just a confirmation of how politics works in teams. In other words, if you do well at the top of the ballot, you often do better at the bottom of the ballot. One of the anomalies of 2020 was the Trump lost, but Republicans down ballad did pretty well. You're listening to Bloomberg business of sports from Bloomberg radio. This is the Bloomberg business of sports show will be explored the big money issues in the world of sports, Michael Barr. I'm scarlet fu. And we are speaking with Oakland athletics president Dave Cavill talking about the team and we're going to answer that long age mystery. Dave, is it the athletics or is it the ace? Well, I've always liked the a's. I think that's a fun nickname. I think that's something that obviously Charlie Finley is in the 70s brought to the club that there's something about that iconic hat and seeing that and so I've always kind of got that direction, but some people like the athletics, so we have a couple of different options for folks. The other question that wasn't, this is a little more serious here, is the Senate committee is targeting MLB antitrust exemption, a bipartisan group of senators, and they're talking about the salaries for minor leaguers. Your thoughts about it, first of all, about minor league players trying to get their fair share of getting paid and this committee about the MLB and to trust exemption. Well, I mean, obviously, we take all the actions and work of these government panels very seriously and I know the lead office and all the folks there are spending time educating all the key stakeholders on the current state of affairs and the industry, the majors, the miners, how it affects our business. And I know that's been a really positive conversation. And I think that's going to continue. And I think it will shape the discussion around some of these meetings and hopefully the outcomes that are created can be positive and maybe better reflects like the current environment that we're in. The MLB took over operations of the minor leagues before the 2021 season. They made a lot of big changes. Can you talk a little bit about what the Oakland a's has done with its minor league team in terms of improving conditions for minor league players? Yeah, so I mean, obviously coming out of the pandemic, I think one of the key focuses with just getting back operating, figuring out which locations because it kind of was a musical chairs every couple of years in the past. You didn't know where your affiliate was going to be. It might be in Texas. It might be in Michigan. It might be in Ohio. And so we've kind of brought a little more stability to that. There's also been a huge investment in facilities to ensure that the facilities are considerably better for the players. So I think those are important steps that have occurred as part of this transition. And that's all going to be important to make sure that we have the best environment for training for the players. And also a good environment for fans in these communities to watch the game. I mean, that's the other thing too. In the minor leagues often kind of entree point for fans into baseball, especially in some of these rural communities. You brought up fans, and the a's they do have a loyal fan base, but unfortunately you have low attendance. We're talking about 8400 average per game. How do you get more butts in the seats? Well, we fundamentally need to do facility. Our current Oakland Alameda coliseum is ten years past as useful life. It's not competitive with the other professional sports venues in the Bay Area or even in the country. And we need to do what we can and we're spending millions of dollars a month. We're working on these parallel paths to determine if we can either get our waterfront ballpark in Oakland built or an option in Las Vegas. And that is really the prime focus of the organization. Now it's solving that really 20 year question of where the aids are going to be because we need to get in a new home so we can have a great experience for our fans for a bigger payroll and more competitive play on the field. Will your fan base follow you along to wherever you end up? We have fans all over the country. One thing Facebook did a study of like fans and different counties and things of that nature.

Well, Nathan, we turn now to the nation's capital where a former White House aide is given the most dramatic testimony yet to the January 6th House committee. Cassidy Hutchinson is a former assistant to then White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. She says the former president knew armed people were at his rally. He also demanded Secret Service remove metal detectors or mags to let them in. I think that is why they're not here to hurt me, let them in, let my people in. We have a major political development overseas this morning Karen Finland and Sweden have taken a major step on their way to NATO membership. "Yeah I say hey we mentioned yesterday that the assured reported day to today was over 1100 cases Well we haven't gotten today's numbers yet but this is the first step they say in advisory that anybody who suspects he or she might be infected not to go to emergency rooms It says see a private doctor Now this advice overturns advice less than a week ago when it urged people to go to emergency units to get an official diagnosis So this U turn would seem to reflect the rapid deterioration of services yesterday's numbers as I mentioned topped 1100 will get the update later today probably a couple of hours New York's governor Catholic is lifting the mask mandate for businesses that do not check COVID-19 status citing case numbers He saw those numbers Literally off the charts And now those numbers are coming down and it is time to adapt Yeah huckel says high inoculation rates and low transmission as well Illinois lifting its indoor mask requirement as of February 28th will stay on to apply to public schools Ten San Francisco Bay Area counties are dropping into our mask requirements as of February 16th Massachusetts will lift at school mask mandate at the end of the month CDC director doctor Rochelle Walensky says the agency is still monitoring numbers The current 7 day daily average of cases is about 247,300 cases per day a decrease of about 44% over the previous week And while lansky says it's good for this to be done as long as people act our states act or localities act in a responsible way UK prime minister Boris Johnson plans to scrap self isolation rules for people who test positive for COVID Provided the current.

"Day on Aaron on Bloomberg quick take powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in over 120 countries I'm more crumpton This is Bloomberg David Thank you so much Mark Tomorrow Kathy huckel delivers her first state of the state address as governor of New York where she's expected to propose term limits and a ban on outside income for those serving in statewide office To set the stage for us and for the governor we welcome now Joe Crowley He's senior policy adviser to squire Patton Boggs mister Crowley served as a democratic representative from the state of New York for 20 years rising ahead the House democratic caucus First of all happy new year Joe Great to have you back with us Give us a sense of Kathy hoku and what she has done so far what she has to say tomorrow Well thank you David happy new year to you and all the folks at Bloomberg I should also I serve in 12 years in the New York State legislature the assembly So I'm very familiar with this speech when Mario Cuomo was governor and George pataki What I could say is that so far Cathy has done a pretty good job of studying the ship of states so to speak She's come into her office during very very turbulent times historical times not only for New York State and New York City but for the country at large with COVID the way in which she became governor as well So I do think that this is a major speech for her Obviously the first woman to hold this office But so far I think she's done a very very good job in terms of studying the ship of state and bringing calm and I think building the relationship she needs to with the state legislature certainly with the new mayor as well as the city council here in New York City We'll pause that just for a moment if you would Joe on the relationship with Eric Adams the new mayor of New York City The nature of that relationship how important is to both of them both the governor and the mayor No there's no question that it is critical We saw that this functionality that existed during the prior administration's both in the state and in the city And his real opportunity to reset there were tremendous needs in New York City during this COVID time especially But just writ large you know the city's dinner with a number of issues that the new bear is kind of the grapple with And it's gonna need to cooperation of the governor to do that as well as the state legislature So I do think this is critical Very important time for both the city and for the state but especially for Kathy Hogan's for her opportunity to kind of lay the ground there for a reelection Now she's going to have competition There's no question about it but having the attorney general bow out I think in some respects of tightened it a bit for her in terms of her chances for reelection Joe is a practical matter does the coronavirus give her and forgive the expression and opportunity to avoid some of the more controversial issues Otherwise she might have to dress such as bail reform which is very controversial as you know and really divides perhaps the party between the more progressives and the more moderates Well I think Kathy is a very practical person I know I've known her for many years We served together the state in the House representatives And I think it's so far she hasn't made any major mistakes And I think that's what folks are looking for was someone who's come in kind of green and the executive position And yet at this time she is really not many mistakes of any at all And so I think that that is something that people looking at as well But look you're heading into a very very interesting political year 2022 The midterm elections for the House representatives every state assembly and state Senate seat is up for reelection as well as every state office attorney general and controller as well as the governor So it's going to be a really interesting year to watch I think but so far from my calculus I think that local has done admirable job It's going to be a very interesting year to watch for your old House of Representatives as well on national national basis Both because of the midterm elections you talk about but also the build back better The question of voting rights what do you think Congress is a practical matter can get done in this midterm election year It's going to be awfully political It will be but I think we can look to first of all the president's first State of the Union address which will take place sometime early this year That detail has yet to be worked out with the House representatives But I think that President Biden wants to come in there kind of and maybe in a kind of a victorious way having not only passed the bipartisan the bipolar infrastructure Bill but also getting something done in terms of the build back better Bill It won't be the 3 billion sorry the $3 trillion bill that a lot of Democrats are looking for But I have to say this David at $1.5 trillion bill is nothing to sneeze at It is monumental It is historical Even if they did a $1 trillion these numbers are astronomical There's nothing that I was dealing with when I was in the House representatives quite frankly Is it there for the taking Is it clear that you could get a bill with Joe Manchin West Virginia Democrat and Christian cinema Arizona Democrats Not always clear to me that they're on the same page They're not always on the same page I know they're both well and I can tell you that kyrsten sinema is one tough cookie As is Joe Manchin But look it's gonna take some compromise and folks on the left and the middle of the Democratic Party to get that compromise But as I say we need to start talking about the positive aspects of whatever is in that package And I do think there was a path towards that So the dimension has said that he would support something within the $1.5 trillion level or below And so I think that's what Democrats have to rationally look at this and maybe ratchet down some of their expectations But I still think that there'll be monumental things in the build back better bill that does get passed I think ultimately will pass Joe's always great having with us Thank you so much for the time It's former New York congressman Joe Crowley Still ahead former IBM CEO.
