"Enable came over to the US and we started a business sort of together and I was asked if I'd be interested in joining hr as part of this particular team in. So I agreed to do that obviously agreement in applying for it and being hired for it in code, and so I, I did that and was hired for the work. In we actually did a test with an organization and then about six months tests the HR leader of that program enemy instead do you think we should scale this across at the time twelve hundred? Locations. In a very short period time. 'cause you also know we in business. You gotta move fast even when it's a great idea as well. Also, could we do it in this very short period of time really felt like we could in job again to evolve it involves everything from talent acquisition to training to learning in leadership development. And so I had the opportunity in my opinion to receive what I would consider a master's or PhD level. Education in the function of HR, through this process in. So not only have the opportunity to be individual contributor in HR and opportunity to become more senior leader in the eventually to become a leader of an HR team side, a team of HR manager's across the entire US supporting this business. And then as part of that as I began to look at what we're to opportunities within his business. I developed this muscle around inclusion and diversity because I truly felt we had to we had to meet the needs of our customer in reflecting that customer in to understand their perspective in. So as we begin to deepen our investment as organization around inclusion diversity, very similarly someone say hey. Would you be willing to come and lead in this space in over the past couple of years? That's what I've been doing as an inclusion diversity leader for organization that story is incredible Sounds to me like you were still able to pursue your dream of becoming a a minister, but you're just doing it in the world of for profit..

R. manager resigned at the beginning of the year but that I will my concern was that this that the former sheriff actions could be retaliatory I took them as being retaliatory for Mister summers working on my campaign and are off duty time and so in order to avoid potential litigation on that it was just the appropriate for me as a new sure to make the change and a grant his request in a scene some of the documentation provided in all of this during the investigation center of some some information back to the person investigating you made the point that in your believe it's possible that the sheriff or cart had denied him his vacation requested this holdover request because he was so openly in support of you is that something that you get then captain summers believed or is that something that you thought might be the reason behind it that's what he believed it and it's even you know we've had conversations about it and again it it when somebody advises me have their beliefs as sure I have to take that really seriously and where I can mitigate potential harm to the to the office and a king county to eat you you certainly knowledge including again and in this letter back to the ombudsman that summers to help in your campaign with was openly supportive of your campaign given the optics of a potential conflict of interest you welcome this investigation or do do you sort of see this is completely unnecessary hello I I am open and transparent an investigation I responded fairly quickly to the young birds request and you know they haven't reached out again to get more information from me but you know I it's it's about the on button office ability to do these independent investigations that can look into elected officials for you know ethics violations and other things that I think extremely important and I would never interfere in that but it would honestly answer their questions did you first learn that this investigation was was happening I think it was in an email from Mister sire or from the on button herself I want to say maybe and November okay so November of last year because the letter that you were written to them was December sixth twenty eighteen and now here we are July twenty nineteen and they've given no indication that this is is over well we have not received the results yet but they do handle a lot of them and you know they've it I don't know where this land on their priority list of of the work that they do for the for king county and you know was pointed out in the report yesterday by the door Monson show you know they do point out that you at least more consistent in another instance where someone else have this request for hours of the staff who didn't she she made a mistake I believe in calculating her vacation she didn't want to lose it and you granted it and she was not someone who is an open supporter of your campaign so when you look at this are you confident that you've treated in any case of of this kind of approval in a fair and just way yes I am you know as a matter of fact had I been in the position to look at the former HR managers request I if it fit the category I would've reprove that as well it's just you know we have people who work really hard and at times are not able to take the lead and so if it fits the categories my guidelines I I approve I have yet to not approve the request okay and that's a super port denoted by the way again looking at some of these policies it's very clear that you have the ability to make these decisions the question is just simply whether or not you made this decision based on and then captain now under share of Scott summers support of your campaign and again that is something you a hundred percent deny and you say about this what you've certainly approved other similar request maybe not as as many hours as this undersheriff as requested but you you've said yes to the request I have I did not do this because of his involvement in my campaign at all I you know in my my letter and statement to the ombudsman office I'm very open about how this whole thing transpired and gave background on that but my approval is based on the non stop work to get translation transition ready for us take office on January one and he headed my transition team and so therefore I thought it was only fair to do that along with the fact that of the potential retaliation charge you will have the documents up by the way a key to teach dot com for you guys to check out yourself because it seems very cut and dry to me just joining me we're talking with the sheriff into Joe hang the king county sheriff about investigations whether or not you offer special treatment to someone who helped her campaign moving on from that I want to talk about something that we we just saw it yesterday the immigration reform law institute they put out a report this is a a right leaning organization they say for twenty seven month period ending on December thirty first twenty seventeen so this is before you took office the king county sheriff's office refused to honor over three hundred and seventy immigration holds almost two hundred and ninety of which were classified by ice as either a threat level one or a threat level to offense at some of the cases including homicide kidnapping sexual so the obviously the entire country has been having a conversation about you know century state or century city status in cases of serious criminality is ice asks you to honor an immigration hold for twenty four forty eight hours so they can get someone and deport who committed an act of of of homicide or or kidnapping sexual assault will you grant that immigration hold so I don't run the jail and I'm not in position to make a determination on an immigration hold there have been times in very serious misconduct where the federal government has talked to us about a person that is a subject of our investigation that we've cooperated with them in the past I haven't had that occur yet during my term and and so you know the business of crimes fighting and so forth takes place regardless of whether we know someone's immigration status so moving forward if the federal government if an ice agent were to tell you Hey you're investigating someone who's in this country illegally would you cooperate with with ice in passing along information as permitted by law that's really general it it wouldn't you know there's king county ordinance that I'm restricted by in many areas but if they're speaking to me about a criminal case extreme wrist community it's it's something else again but it's not based on whether or not I know about somebody's immigration status within the in that case I mean so let's say you're talking about someone who is being investigated for a rate for a murder or it's someone who's been found guilty of of being in this country illegally and ordered deported and you learn that is of course as a matter of course of the investigation it is the position of the king county sheriff's department sort of hands off in that regard not being proactive and and reactive or is it we're going to try and not get involved at all because I I'm trying to figure out from the sentry stayed in the century county standpoint how that impacts your office the second half of that question just based on on what federal government may say about immigration status that's that's not something that that we care about our do were busy during our investigations if we have an extreme investigation that the federal government becomes aware of and you know it's criminal investigation going on I I have a duty to work with them on when the federal government on those crimes so then at last question just what what's your take then on the century state law that was just passed and its impact if any on the king county sheriff's office again like this the county ordinance there's there's really no impact that it has on us about going and doing the daily work that we do king county sheriff's office policy for thirty years has.

"February twenty fifth I signed my job offer in the new company, and I turned in my two weeks notice. My new company was very interested in me starting earlier than two weeks and asked me to let me know, let them know if my current job would make me work out the two weeks or not well, they didn't make me work out the two weeks. My last day was then was February twenty six I love a new employer know that I'd be able to start earlier in my new start date was to be March. Forth rather than the eleventh. I met with my new boss and my team that I would be working with on Wednesday. Everything seemed fine then late Friday evening March. I received a phone call from the regional human resource manager stating that my job offer would have to be revoked because another employee there had Google to my name and gone on to my Facebook page. The HR manager said the employees had found some posts from back in October two thousand eighteen that violated their anti bullying concerning the LGBTQ community. The HR manager read me the post, and I honestly didn't even remember them. But she turned. But the term she mentioned that being offensive is term that is often used by people. I think was coined by Rush Limbaugh term Limbaugh that his his used in describing transition surgery for male to female. I don't know what the term is both of the post the HR manager read to me were obviously only meant as a joke. I defended myself the best I could, but to no avail as the HR manager repeatedly said there was nothing that could be done and advised that I apply for unemployment as soon as possible. I am not aware as to get if I have been approved for unemployment or not. But I now have no employment because of them revoking their job offer and me having already left. My other job. I have since made my Facebook page private, but one did not have to be on my page for longer than two seconds to see that. I am a conservative. Dave, they're saying Kim, we're doing it. We got an Email the other day. Dave new guy said, hey, I submitted my resume with your template as the guide, and he said, I got an Email back in the higher manager said, I gotta tell you. I've never seen anything that looks like this. It was really weird. But I liked it before an interview. And you know, that's the whole point of it. Something to stand out. That's right found out from the crowds. Right. You know, you resumes are being submitted in the form of some type of automated situation. And then if they're printed out, it's almost like, there's this big pile in you're gonna stand out you have to have a relationship attached to it. And that's what we're really preaching on the show in this guy that you need to do the work to find some type of connection with somebody at that company who will walk your resume in or simply say, hey, so and so just applied, and I know them through this person. I think they're very very sharp could be a really good culture fit. I think you ought to give them a shot. And that's what you're looking for. Then when they look at that resume, you want to stand out, they remember you. And and so we lead with who you know, we have these big bold headings we walk through this in these guys get hired guys. And then the interview guide itself is really practical Davor preparing people on how to prepare, and then how to perform those are the two parts of an interview. How do you prepare head of time? And then how do you perform when you get that chance because that's nerve wracking moment, you think for most people they're not like you. And I that stand on stages or like to do live broadcast. This a high pressure moment where you're sitting across from somebody who may or may not hire you. Yeah. And you know, the this hiring guide the how to win the interview guide five strategies on standing out in the hiring process. This is when you when I read through it. I have those moments where I go. Well, no kidding. But it always takes me back to most people don't that. They invest more time in memorizing. Song titles or sports statistics than they do learning about the company they're going to interview with or than they do thinking about how they're gonna look when they walk in the door. Exactly. Right. And how they're going to dress when they walk in the door. And what signals does that send off? That's right. And you know, there's just some basic preparation before you get there. That's a big deal. Yeah. This is not an event in your life that you want to add live. It's just not fair few people that can go in without any kind of preparation at all and do well in an interview, and you have to think like you're competing against twenty people. You have to have the mindset this is a competition for this position. Certainly in today's environment. They right now. Dave we have a job market. That's never been hotter in the history of this country. There are more people there. More jobs that are available than there are people that are unemployed. So companies are looking for people, and there's a lot of demand and. So you gotta understand that there's a competition here because people are going after hey, we need you. We want you. And they're putting out really good job offers and things of that nature. And so it's a competitive market too. Just because it's hot doesn't mean they're gonna give it to you. Because you're a warm body. You gotta think like, you're competing. And that's where the preparation comes in you..
"hr manager" Discussed on The Ken Coleman Show
"Hours. So it's hard for me to Brent and take a call in the middle of the day. When I have my regular job that I'm also taking calls for in the middle of the day. Yeah. Yeah. That that's the issue. But but let me ask you this of the so how many hours a week are you given to this this day job of being the HR manager? Sixty hours a week. Fifty. Gimme average it going to be about fifty five a week. Okay. And most of that's the of the fifty five a good portion of that is the travel between the two cities. How far away are the cities. Tampa tore Landau so coast to coast. What is that to our drive about an hour and a half two hours each day? Okay. So every day you're doing that. Dr. No, no that's anywhere from two to three times a week. Yeah. So what's your big question for me? Now that I've got a snapshot you said this was a tough one. What's the big question for me? I wanted hoping that you could help me think of a way to structure, the side hustle. So that it doesn't require me to work during regular business hours. If there's some way I can work, you know, I know this isn't about passion, or or as far as I know. Oh for you. That's I'm I'm fine with this. Okay. Good. How how can I structure it? So that I can still provide that HR consulting support on my side hustle. But not during do it during regular business out of how do you balance the two it's pretty simple you're going to have to tell the current clients or potential clients. This is my reality. And I can give you of the hours of X two X on making this up. But you know, I can do I can work from seven to nine three nights a week or I can work from six to eight four nine two week. You have to decide what's going to kill you. And then back it way off, you know, my advice to you is going. What would absolutely just just zap you where you got no energy out because it's some point you're going to have to choose. You're just you're capped. This side hustle is kept. This was a business that was bringing you basically what you're making now. Right. If you're making six to seven a month when you were doing it on your own as a consultant, right? That's about the same. It's seven thousand seven times twelve eighty four last I checked, and so you're you know, what I mean. And you're making eighty five now. So I'm trying to give you vice. But also tell you you've got a decision to make it some point. I don't think it's any time soon. I want you to try this new rhythm. But the question becomes will your customer say, okay. Or will they go? No. I've got to have somebody that I can get a hold of two thirty. When I got a crisis. Right. I just don't know if I'm nervous I'm nervous because a nervous may not be the right word. But that does that present itself as a professional when you're saying, oh, I can only do it between the hours that it makes me look like a small business. I guess or make you what you are like. True. I mean, I don't know what I don't. I don't. Here's the point. It depends on who you work for if you're working for small businesses, which you are because they're the only people that use HR consultants right because they don't have the budget. They don't hire somebody fulltime. And so the point is is that if I as a client think that you're valuable, and I trust why ETA I know her experience, and I also know she has a full time job as an HR manager VIN. I Wayne well, do I trust it? Yeah. I do do. I like working with her. Yeah. Yeah. I do does. She help us. Yeah. Yeah. She does. Is it a benefit that? She's actually an HR manager not just a consultant. Yeah. Kind of cool that she does that during the day. She's a real pro. And you know, what she helps me solve bigger issues, and I can lead through those. If I just I just need her brain and her experience, and I'm fine with that..
