"Lewis with the Top Local Stories. We're following this hour. Two area grandparents on their way to do their civic duty were hit by a car and killed last election day. And now there's been a conviction in that case. Miguel and Anna Ortiz were walking across the street to the elementary school in their Gaithersburg neighborhood on Election Day 2022. They were hit and killed by the Prius being driven by Devinder Singh. Now a Montgomery County judge has found Singh guilty of homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol as well as DUI and other charges. He faces up to 10 years in prison and $14 ,000 in fines. Prosecutor John McCarthy says Singh has a history of driving under the influence. He'll ask for the maximum when Singh is sentenced in October. Neil Aude can stain WTOP news. A suspect is under arrest in connection with a deadly shooting near Howard University last month and that suspect is shockingly just 14 years old. The boy is accused of killing a construction worker on July 13th near the intersection of 6th and Bryant Streets Northwest. Police say 34 -year -old Rafael Adolfo Gomez was gunned down during an attempted robbery. The teen is charged with felony murder while armed. Meantime, the search continues for some other young people suspected of attacking a daytime D .C. restaurant owner last week. Like clockwork every morning since opening Brooklyn Grill in Brooklyn, Charles Ogu would deliver supplies to his restaurant at 4. But last Wednesday as he was doing that he says attacked he was by a group of teenagers. Besides being stabbed his head also hit the pavement. He says they then stole his rental car and he was left on the street until someone called police. For his wife Julie she only out found her husband was in the ICU after looking for him. As he recovers now she thanks the community for its support and while she doesn't have a message for those who did this. Well the message is to the parents. Why don't you know where your children are? Mike Murillo, UTOP News. While many people were sound asleep U .S. soccer fans gathered at local bars around here. They were up to watch the U .S. women's national team scrape by to the stage of the Women's World Cup after a scoreless tie with Portugal. Well over a hundred fans shouted and groaned during the two -hour game here at Franklin Hole. Fun memory to like tell our kids someday that we got up at 3 a .m. to watch a game at the bar next door. I wouldn't have made it alone. This is group therapy. Beer floated in the first half and coffee in the second half but even more jitters. It was not the dominating win many were hoping for but there was slight relief as many fans filed out of the bar at 5 a .m. You know I mean we won it two times in a row but no one's ever won it three times in a row so optimistic though. Northwest D .C. Luke Luger, WTOP News. U .S. "I'm David Weston. We are now just exactly three weeks away from the midterm elections. And one of the issues, particularly the Democrats are emphasizing is abortion and that dabs decision and what should be done about it. In fact, it just coincidentally the president right now, President Biden is speaking at an event at Howard theater in Washington, D.C., and he is addressing you guessed it abortion. To take us through the issue and what factor it may or may not play in these wind turbo elections, welcome. Now, Wendy benjamins and she is Bloomberg deputy managing editor for U.S. government and the economy and also Laura lifting. She is congressional reporter for Bloomberg. So thank you so much, Laura. You have a terrific piece out in the Bloomberg right now, addressing one specific congressional district down in Virginia. Take us through what you're seeing there. Well, it's a district that's really at the center of American politics right now. It's the district if you rank all districts from the most for Trump in the last election and the most for Biden and meet in the middle, this is seat number two 18 and it's a seat that has switched back and forth between parties many times. Abortion has become a top issue in this race. It's a race between two female candidates, both with the military background running in a military district that includes Virginia Beach. And but one is pro life. The Republican Jen kick ins and the incumbent Democrat Elaine luria is pro choice and is really running on this issue. 40% of the ads that she's running this campaign that she or the democratic congressional campaign committee have run are on this issue. So Wendy, if you go back three, four, 5 months ago, it was thought that the decision that Dobbs case and the abortion issue could loom really large in this election. Is that still the case or is the interest of waning a bit? The interest is waning a bit, but I still think it is the number two issue. The fact that we just got bad inflation numbers and gasoline prices are ticking up again is dropping abortion back down. But one of the great facts that Laura found out in her reporting is that there's been a surge in that district of women registering to vote. I don't think they're voting because of gasoline prices. Well, that's interesting. Didn't we see something similar in Kansas? Remember there was that was in an earlier primary election. There was a congressional I'm sorry, a constitutional amendment proposed that really people were surprised at how it came out. Yes, there was a moratorium on ballot initiative on abortion. It was a surprise to people that the pro choice side one and one in that. And it's shown a lot of energy that can be had in these races. And what we're seeing, though, is that if you take the issue of inflation, recent polls show about 80% of the public feels that's a very important issue. It's around 55%. If you look at just abortion, but if you take just Democrats you're back at 80% saying that it's very important to them. So it's a big motivator. Exactly my question, Wendy, how much of this is get at your vote for Democrats? Biden's speech today is all about get out the vote for Democrats. It's reminding them, especially democratic women and independent women, what they have at stake in this election, and he is promising at least to try to help get them back where they want to be, which is to have some sort of right to an abortion. But first he has to win Congress. And that's very uncertain right now. So Laura, in your Virginia V 6 district that you took a look at, how is the Republican candidate dealing with the abortion issue? Well, she's really been put on the defensive. She's trying to keep the focus on inflation and the economy and crime and other issues that are playing up for Republicans, but she had to respond in one ad saying, you know, I've been called a lot of things, but extremists, that's a new one. In a debate between the two candidates last week. The democratia brought up the abortion issue before the moderators even did. And responded that she felt that her position on abortion has been miscast that she does she does support some exceptions for abortion restrictions and they were very much going at it on this

They've also been hiring younger workers under 18 because they're available for evening hours. Hopefully, it'll come back to normal One day, you know Valerie Bunk w. T O P NEWS, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is speaking out on whether the political divide in the country influences vaccination. We have vaccinated 81% of all the people that are eligible, everybody 12 and over 95% of our seniors appearing on NBC's Meet the Press, The governor touted the fact that Maryland is one of the most vaccinated state. And you know, As a result, our hospitalizations are down 70 some percent from their peak deaths are down.
