"Welcome back to seven one six two sabres host the Tampa Bay Lightning being just over an hour. Mike Chopin the bulldog here on the hallway and belts game show. The sabres are coming off a thrilling win on Saturday over Vancouver in a shootout that's the late two-goal comeback in the third period. It's even if you want to impress a little bit more killing off two penalties late both were at least partly in overtime. And then the shootout win Jack Eichel's goal Carter Hutton's performance. Eventually Casey middle stats game winner. In the press notes. There's an article, and I'm going to go find out who wrote it to read it. It's from the sabers website. Jordan, Barbara good. Who wrote he talked to middle stats college goalie teammate, right? Eric sheer horn. I saw reference to this or heard reference to this about the move that middle one of the Vancouver and middle stat. I think maybe the coach there. I didn't see the article. I think I heard Howard Jeremy talking about it with Paul the actually this morning. So maybe Paul was in on this conversation that Jordan Barbara's taken those quotes from. But I that middle stat used to love to work on it in college and the goalies loved it. So they would just just stay out late and work on that. Which I think is really cool like you find a partner that wants to do that with you as a goalie or as a shooter. Like, I appreciate the good players who want to do that to my kid got extra time. And they want to spend some time doing that. Like, go me. That's only gonna help you. So through school the middle stat and goalie in college. We're doing the same kind of thing with the win the sabers improved to nine six in two or nine and eight in their first seventeen games were at zero games. So the streak of them not having a winning record. They have a winning record nine eight twenty points that is fifth in the Atlantic Division. It'd be tied for second in the metropolitan division right now. Thinking about the playoffs this early. The teams the Atlantic including the sabres are up on the teams from the metropolitan, but it's very close. Twenty points behind Montreal for fourth Florida, by the way is eighth having won four straight might be getting their act together. They had a weird. There was a weird thing last week. I think Thursday lashed pregame show. I did you were off on Thursday. I noticed that at the time. They only had played eleven gains and everyone else was around fifteen or so what's going on there? And obviously they played some games that they're still lagging in that area. They have three games in hand on the entire division four on Ottawa. But they've won four in a row, and they're so they're a team when I was thinking about this last Thursday and noticed where they were they got a lot of games to make up the negative be good or bad, depending on what kind of form you're in while they're in good form right now is they won four in a row. And that's a team that I'll be thinking about waiting to see if they start climbing because I wouldn't expect them to finish last for sure I would expect there to be a team that I'm to have to be battling with if I'm going to be in a playoff spot. So I'd expect them to climb here. Not that far declined. But still early enough in the year. And it's not like they have zero in the win column either. So. That's a team. I've I've kind of your Mark can I stay ahead of them. I think I might be doing a decent job. Tampa Bay is twelve and five or twelve four and one twenty five points first place in the sabers Atlantic Division plus fifteen goal differential buffalo at plus one. Tampa is legit. They have been good for years. They haven't got any Stanley Cup to talk about they made the finals the one time when they lost to the Blackhawks Stanley Cup pre-cancerous season back in two thousand four, but this interational lightning have been really good. But not yet. You know, great gas because they don't have they don't have the cop. But arguably the team to beat in the league this year much less than east, and re ver very deep Paul made this point with us when he joined us more than three hours ago now. Actually, exactly three hours ago that you think about kucherov now. Stamkos guys that were on the team in the finals Tyler Johnson, even for that. And none of those guys are they're leading score. The league scorer is rating point. Yanni? Gord is another player who like last year. When I sorta started crushing. I just watching lightning games a part of it was who's point who's court who are these people. How does this team just keep churning out guys that show up and have like super high end talent? And like there's a couple of guys that a year ago at this time, I didn't even know either of them and like they're they're nice players for them. And they just added to this depth that they've got. Gorgeous got seventeen points. You know, it's it's both things. Right. It's that you you have to be good enough to produce like this. But you also maybe need to have the high end above you. Like, oh, seven sabers. A little bit helps a lot sure where you can get a trickle down effect in your scoring. Right. So Tampa looks like it has that. And it's part of what makes them good. We are getting you dialed in for tonight's sabres game. And that's probably presented by com. The official telephone system provider of the Buffalo Sabres and next the official business communications provider of the Buffalo Sabres all the numbers regarding the sabers have them really right in the middle of the league. Which of course, is is a big improvement the goal differential, the record the possession stats like everything is right there. And okay. Obviously, that's better. Like, I said. Yeah. Anyone's teams in the league. Maybe you can tell me I think recently, I heard this and maybe a week or so that like shooting percentage, the PTO is also doesn't look fluky like so there's there's nothing that may. Oh, well, that's not sustainable Skinner's really high himself as a team they are not out of wack. They're sort of right around average in both areas. And that is. You might make. It's still a smaller sample, but it doesn't have you thinking like they are doing something. They're getting on. Worldly goaltending that won't sustain. They're getting this incredible production from players who are shooting the lights out in that. That'll come back to they're just there in the middle in that too. I think is occurred team wise. Get right. Yeah. I don't know that exactly. But I would assume it's right given the other stuff right Skinner's at twenty one percent him really high and Ville is about eighteen percent. Which is very nice for him. Like palm Advil. Having eagles already what he should end up with like twenty is still really good. And he's off that line. Now. So we'll see what what happens to that. And how on that lash? Yes. So you have thirty one teams in the savers like right now through whatever it is seventeen gained really looking quite average. We'll sixteen make it. So if your average you might expect certainly not too much to hope for here that this team contents. Okay. Here's my question. Let's say they lose in the first round and five would you take that? And does it matter who they lose to?.

"Midget hockey things like that to transitioning into playing usually division one sometimes straight into say the american league just jerkins dead and some others do you think you know over the years rob we've seen a more americans get drafted in the nhl get drafted in the first round do you think the us h l is is a big part of that increase i would say so for sure and we have also seen a lot of european players starting to come up with a wanna go that college route and macek picard will be a great example about as well check kid who comes over and it helps these guys get kind of used to the north american style of play and the english language and things like that and and get ready to advance their careers on this conversation that but certainly american hockey in general the usa hockey numbers are outstanding the way that they've grown so much you're seeing a much bigger american influence in the game and i you know obviously there are plenty of americans that go and play major junior as well in canada but you're seeing more and more guys stay in the united states this is an option for them to have again that transitional period to get ready for the next level as opposed to say going straight from high school hockey division one it's really great next step to to play with the best players in that age range and win a period of time with these guys are going from you know teenage boys to young men and and really developing their games so much some of these guys you know you see them coming to the us h l their game and their size and everything year later is the the turnaround time is is praising the progress in their own game and and so i certainly see it a lot more of that especially with the americans what you know i i didn't realize the national team program plays in the usa cello plays a us h l scheduled yeah i mean some of the guys that i've been able to call the play by play of these last three years in the usa.

"Gaining nice well skating defenseman whether it's darlene bogosian and guliyev it's just those three i've got three guys that can move so maybe i need housley to be the best coach for gordon maybe it'd be the best coach for for guli and just let down do his thing it is interesting though to hear delhi and say he prefers the smaller ice surface that he likes better i was surprised you said that i which because of the timing of the how quickly forwards are going to be up on him as close to in the swedish hockey league maybe that's good for him maybe maybe it helps maybe it turns out to be positive that that caught me by surprise he talked about it again in his press conference yesterday i was listening when the instigators care to live and he made the same comments with house let me get back to housi for a second i just as i said i think look house he has to be a good coach house the isn't just he's gotta make the defense better he's got to be a good coach he's got to have the right staff he's got to be able to come up with the right system the way to get through the players the way to make everybody better on the team not just the defenseman i just i just i'm hoping and praying that the way he play played the game actually i guess the one thing i'm hoping for said how's he doesn't he lets darlene darlene and i know there's an element of the kids eighteen he hasn't played in the nhl you know you gotta be careful at least we're not having a discussion of he's got to go to rochester and earned his time up here but i just i worry that they take too cautious approach and i i when i say i'm glad house is the guy to coach him i say it in large part because i hope that means how's he will let this kid be creative well let him be aggressive we'll we'll go to him and tell him what the coaches in for london told him them and maybe maybe the coaches in for london did it because they watch this kid in practice and they realized he's got some kind of special ability we're we have to let this kid play and i you know one of the things that romburg told us roger ron burgers coach for london that just always stuck with me was that when when delina arrived i arrived in for london he was worried about making mistakes he wanted to play a safe game he didn't want to turn the puck over didn't wanna make mistakes didn't wanna cost the team game and the coaches at some point went him and said just go play basically we'll live with the mistakes we're not gonna that you i want housley to let the kid be the kid and not turn this into over coaching play it safe the basically the equivalent of a football discussion to a young quarterback of punts better than an interception i want him to be able to take chances and live with chances and live with some stakes because the upside is there will be far more successful plays than mistakes that to me is the biggest thing with house how does he handle darlene did they spoon feed them to they put a a red light on them a yellow light on them a green light on them what they let this kid do and how soon do they have a trust factor and rasmus stalling to let him be creative that's the thing i worry about with housing but that's also why i think he's the right coach because that's the way housley played the game i'm hoping he lets dulling do the same thing go do it i mean then again they were aggressive until they lost to the devils six to wanna give two on on one ones then kind of locked down texter writes in literally drafted the guy four days ago and you guys are talking about norris trophies relax they had the same discussion in evanston when they won the lottery with mcdavid and they bet your fans they were talking about how quickly can they win a cup i'm not talking about that i'm talking about the expectation it's not like this isn't the sabers walking out and telling you he's the best defensive prospects since whatever botulism talked about how how good he is how talented he is yada yada yada they took him first and that was.

"We had so many different guys on talk about him i can't remember maybe it was matt donovan he was on last week paul with show with on chopin bulldog but sal was in with chris and i think i think it was matt who just talked about how you constantly see him trying to get better like he wants to improve he's driven to try and be better every day every game every shift and it's it's really exciting to hear someone say that about a kid who's eighteen with all of these tremendous skills that they have that kind of drive absolutely in that doesn't surprise me at all but even he talks about that and that's why he does get better and that's why he is who he is and that's why he's so much better than than other players because he has those traits that superstars have one of the things paul's with a saito three zero five fifty you got a comment question on the draft rhino riley their face well we'll cover those topics with paul to one of the things to me it's really interesting is is how what how did they let the kid play like what kind of role did they envision for him in year one because we've talked about his great highlights and all this stuff he does going up ice and how he's a magic magician you know with the puck on his stick i i almost think like i'm going to develop a camp that at some point maybe thursday maybe saturday maybe both like you're waiting for this kid did you go up ice and like stick handled through five guys and i wonder what the sabers say to him like a rascasse just you know play you know do you do you just calm down and say don't you don't have to put on a show or you just tell the kid hey go out there and do what you do.

"So there isn't a lot of leverage that sam reinhart has right now i think honestly it's the the second half this is a really interesting discussion because of just how black and white his season was last year i'm not sure if you could put together a more set of extremes he was invisible in the first forty games and he was dominant in the second forty games on a really bad hockey team you know so i don't know how the sabers wanna play this they maybe they look at it maybe you said does reinhard take a gamble on himself maybe you're right maybe the sabers do that and say prove it prove it sam lets you were great the second half of the season you were nowhere to be found the first half of the season here's a one year offer proven alex writes in why not just give them a long term deal maybe he doesn't want it i don't i don't think they would want to do that you could offer him eight years sixteen million oh gosh and he's never gonna take sixteen billion total total site right two million a year for eight years and there's no way we do that or whatever three three million a year for eight years not going to tell him he's nuts the break that he's he's giving up years of unrestricted free agency if you go beyond four years he's now established as a player in the league has got to twenty goals seasons he's super young and he's he's on a team that i mean you know the players get get excited about doll lean knew we could talk about free agents are they going to be excited maybe the guys that would be more accented of the players on the team hey this this kid's gonna make us a lot better as a team we should in theory score more the sabers don't score they've been one of the worst scoring teams for a few years even strength they don't score and maybe now they will and maybe sam reinhart will go from twenty goal seasons two twenty five to twenty eight goals seasons evander kane just got seven million a year i think one of the guys might have been on the draft coverage on friday maybe it was pierre mcguire one of the guys said you know the happiest sabres should be guys like and the forwards because now you've got a guy on your blue line who can actually get you the puck kane greenwich he's got a much bigger body of work and he's a ufa but kane fifty four points last year seven million a year reinhard fifty points last year i mean is five and a half.

"I should think that way i mean look at beane and mcdermott how many carolina panthers have rolled through hair since they look at tim murray leonard auto you all you know and he signed some other ottawa prospects made a huge h l trade with ottawa you know with bringing in a bunch of ottawa guys so they they bring in what they know so i think you should definitely should bring that up because these are people he drafted these are people he scouted these are people that he went through the war with in in the ahl so these are people he knows better than others so of course i think it's it's only natural to talk about people like that anybody floats your boat the only thing that worries me about syrian rust is are they product of the pittsburgh penguins are they product of being on a very very good team if you put them on a bad team or an up and coming team be able to produce in that situation and that's what i would be afraid of would you like place of trivia mr hamilton i'm ready for this this this hockey trivia right hockey trivia all right i would've i would've i not very good at trivia but i would have done well with your movies early know you're you're the ringer we brought in for high it's hockey trivia involve some older players so that's why you being ancient i thought this was really good for it's right up your alley so you know this this darlene guy some people are saying it could be the the best defenceman the come out of the draft number one overall since daddy pop van back in one thousand nine hundred seventy whatever it was any seven three three three two or three denny pot van is seventh all time in nhl scoring among defensemen with over a thousand points he's one of only eight defensemen with a thousand points fred more than a thousand points in their nhl career named the other seven nhl defenseman who registered more than a thousand points in their nhl career housley or coffee oh would you slow down for a second list he must have missed antonio long long enough coffee i would have thought he would have made it i'll look it up real quick but he was not in the lindstrom.

"You know the nfl if they wanna get rid of holdouts and they really think this is a problem one of the trade offs to a guaranteed contract you you could do that i how come other sports don't have outs the same way well in the nhl contracts are guaranteed so if you front loaded deal you are locked into that deal and the nfl when you just cut a guy and let him loose with you know the money he got he got in there are twenty million dollars in contracts coming up in the next couple of years and you cut him loose the reason the nfl players are more likely to hold out because there are more likely to be hurt they have more to lose and i don't have any problem with khalil mack with aaron donald with julio jones these guys are all thomas that are independent contractors that can be released at any time by their team and sometimes the contract means they get a certain amount of money when that happens but you know you sign one hundred million dollar contract only fifty million of that is guaranteed guys are looking for guarantee seed money and i don't i don't have any problem with that you're signing any contract no matter what you're doing no matter where it is what business it is you want guarantees guarantees pay the bills potential incentives that stuff that's all nice but it's guarantees for these guys that pay the bills and that's what that's what they're gonna want so with julio jones you know i'm sure that there are plenty of sports fans out there that are mad at these guys and one of the shot up and play you know you're not the one putting your body on the line you're not the one that if you terrier acl gets caught by the team and then boom you've you've exhausted all of your football life and you're not going to get that that contract back so no issue with them use your leverage the players that had players that have the leverage of the ones that use it if you.

"Nhl gm to have access to really good data about what might happen but the idea that the sabers could trade riley for hannifin this account is of the belief that the sabers should walk to carolina to do this that hannifin is going to be a star he's really good that a lot of numbers indicate he's going to be really good and that'll riley at even strength if you can get rid of them do it that you can get rid of them because the contract refers to it as an albatross and i know o'reilly's got value but the league isn't exactly all the same you know it's kinda like football with fullbacks there are teams that think fullbacks are important there are teams that don't employ one there are teams that think you have to play under center for quarterback there are teams that you don't there are run pass options there in hockey it's different sport obviously but they are going to be some guy is that a team would value very highly and others that don't montreal paid a goalie ten and a half million dollars a year and and by decent they were still bad at five on five they've been a disaster and o'reilly's part of that his five and five numbers i it's it's not a impressive thing you win a bunch of face offs.

"It comes to the quarterback competition how would you play it out and does josh allen getting first team reps does it move all does it does it kind of fire you up because if he moves up the depth chart listen if he wins the job out of training camp is there starter opening day i'll probably do the same thing i did last year with nathan peterman getting the the start that doesn't mean celebrate it and think it's going to be great but i will at least be moved to acknowledge hey the kid must've done something to convince the coaches perk up a little bit that means the opener has a little added value to me and then they open up in baltimore against the ravens and you know if it's peterman if it's mccarron i mean i'm watching i'm ready but if it's alan then we go into quarterback evaluation motor and you know what that is that that is no matter what the score is no matter what the situation is you're breaking down throw by throw what you see from the guy maybe some of you do we'll do that with mccarron because he's never had a chance to be a full time starter either and i i suppose we would do that with peterman too because he's on the team and he was also a draft pick but allen's the different story as everybody knows alan is the guy that we're waiting to see take the job and look sean mccoy speaking on it yesterday he talked a lot about allen i'll play some of the the clips here for mccoy because it's not often you get a veteran running back talking about a rookie i wanna say so extensively he had an awful lot to say about alan will start with his general feeling on rookies out of the honest he's pretty good and i'm not a big fan of work he's best rookie out there likes and my career has probably been trae traces really good and a lotta guys as work easter not like him so doesn't generally like rookies.

Bills CB Tre'Davious White calls Tremaine Edmunds 'an alpha male'

"Let's talk about tremaine edmonds rookie linebacker for the bills last week appearing on good morning football today via swipe predicted edmonds would be quote one of the best young linebackers in the league quote this is an alpha male guy goes sideline to sideline he's a four four forty yard dash guy yes tremendous brains athleticism his knowledge of the game is next to none so based on trae white better forget it tremaine deadman's wins the defensive rookie of the year award who the other candidates new you're gonna ask me that i should probably pull up the draft charts here trying to think who else went at the top of the draft i am efforting all i remember is the core banks really there were there were other players drafted quarterback sam denzel ward bradley chubb hang on let me get you some more roquan smith went teams to war denial fine roquan smith went minka fitzpatrick vida doron pain marcus davenport okay there's tremaine derwin james giro l exander latent vander ash dr rashad evans offense offense offense up and then we get the bottom and around one those would be both of the guys there's your group so tremaine edmonds better i would never bet nfl defensive rookie of the year so no i won't bet it not betting it i bet you you're going to hurt your maintenance feelings by the way better forget a josh allen gets a start in a preseason game yeah yeah if nothing else the fourth one right i hadn't thought about the fourth one one of the first three editor forget it one of the first three yeah i wasn't really thinking about the fourth game it's a tough one chris it's not a real competition than he won't he would only get one if it's a real competition he could start so no i probably i don't think he will i i think that they are committed to building him into starting quarterback i've believed that they will talk about process a lot and say you know it's it's up to mccarron and peterman to start the season and then alan will not be in the mix.

"Batavia bets dot com which we'll get to our good friend todd height mr height it is howard jeremy happy friday i'm very well how you guys doing doing well doing well always nice to have you on to talk i guess i should i just get the obvious question out of the way i is justify winning the triple crown i'll give you the obvious answer he may but then again he may not well well played mr handicapper to get people in on this okay let's let's break this down give us a reason your reason or reasons why and then we'll get into why he might not well he he is the fastest horse let's face it i'm he's undefeated he's in rarified air he broke the curse of apollo he's become a he's attempting to become the second horse since seattle slew to ever win the triple crown undefeated but he may not howard and i'll i'll get it right into that because his schedule has been demanding six races and in sixteen weeks on her for three year old and his numbers are going in the wrong direction so you know again i don't have the and it's i had gone into the freakiness is he getting tired or maybe he's regressing because he's catching off racetracks in maybe he really doesn't like an offer racetracks he's good enough to win and that's what maybe he prefers a dry track what what is the weather forecast rebel mont unfortunately a beautiful day eighty degrees in the afternoon showers you how that plays up okay if it's not justify who has the best chance of beating him well it's the same worse we talked about five weeks ago the white guy horse also called the buzz horse so by the new york racing people and that's hot bird if you go back to the replay hockberg had that terrible trip around the turn you can clearly see it his jackie i read ortiz is wearing a pink caps he stands out and you'll see him twice on the turn getting traffic have to stop now why is that nificant because when you're carrying one hundred twenty six pounds you just can't stop and start these horses now if you're lucky the tape play on past the wire you'll see a horse going a hundred miles an hour he actually flies by justify and that's why is an important because to me and to others it shows.

"Is there any historical perspective comparing him this kind of gets maybe to the expectations and the stats we were just talking about any kind of historical perspective that you would use in terms of other defensemen over the years in the draft that you would put him up there with headman we're putting them in with the top guys right i'm so people that that i hear disgusted with with our fellow swedish defense than like a lot of people say eric halston headman i don't really see either those there's a mix the person in most seat for when i look at darlene is actually drew doughty who was also a top pick had he was second overall he came from the h l so his junior numbers are very different different kettle of fish but if you look at how doughty's career progressed its first year he had i'm looking at as now twenty seven points then it was up to fifty nine and then he's been in that you know buying one or two down seasons he's been in that kind of forty five to sixty sphere for most of his career since then and he he's got a similar frame to doughty he's played i think quite similar style to doughty with that he he's very often you know offensively gifted a great skater fantastic puck skills for a defenseman dolly mighty and be a little bit more skills with the puck doughty and and also a bit of a physical game you know not bone crunching hyper say but it definitely holds his own and he's got good size can good strengths and he kind of does a bit of everything and that's that's really you know the epitome of franchise defenseman he you know he he's he's covered with with with team honors two stanley cups he's got gold medals she whether awards here and there i think that's a pretty good outcome and that's that's where i leave for in terms of the.
