"Fame w W e ANNOUNCER the think Howard Finkel. Will you please rise for the singing off the Russian national anthem Here is Nikolai Volkoff and other fans. Neighbor Nationals command. All scared is come on in. Come on. I know he made him a bunch of bull crap, but it sounded good him the iron cheek when they're doing their thing, and You know, I I go back to the eighties wrestling T o think about just how polarizing national anthems are at sporting events or entertainment events, and we're going to get into it with you here on the grass show on CBS Sports Radio on CBS sports radio dot com Hello to all my snowflakes, because you're all different, got nothing to do with your political leans, although I think those young, both sides of the aisle are going to be pretty upset with me In terms of the way I view all of this. And for those of you who haven't been following what's going on. And hey, I gotta be honest with him would know full time job right now is I'm trying to figure out what it is. I'm going to do next. And you know about the head to Florida for some fun and an interesting business opportunity. I gotta be honest with you once a super Bowl was over with, Um I kind of checked out of sports. You know, I've been watching the Daytona 500, which is still going on right now and held there in stage one because they had a massive wreck and then a rain delay and all sorts of mess down there. Let me see that Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks through the preseason him the first chunk of regular season games at home. They haven't been playing the national anthem before games. And I gotta be honest with you if there was some sort of rabble rouser down in the Dallas media who pointed this out and who brought this to people's attention? Okay, Okay. All right. You know, I guess nowadays that this is a story And it is because there is N BA protocols that there are, I should say for decent English MBA protocols in place that do require teams to play the national anthem before games, but You know, I got a I am normally pretty one day And normally I give you an opinion on this show. I'm not one to tippy toe around a little bit. I'm not one torto of make something up or give you a half truth third or some of that. I think you could tell. I'm pretty genuine when it comes to sitting here and doing a talk show and I am not wrapped up in this controversy the way other people are now I am excited to talk about it because I do think there is a discussion to be had relative to the anthem and its place it sporting events. Let's remember the sporting events are just another different form of entertainment. And, you know, I heard the collar at the end of Jodi Max Show here on CBS Sports Radio about 15 minutes ago and No, they the lad wondered. Okay. When did this all start? So did a quick Google search. And basically the first time it happened was 18 62. At least this is what the interwebs air telling me. So if you're a historian out there and you're gonna bust my chops, then Okay, then I guess I'm an idiot. But You go all the way back to 18 62 and you know it. The times were low in the country, and it was away a sporting event to play the national anthem to sort of boost the spirit of the country and Then he got into the late 18 hundreds and early 19 hundreds and started We played a ball games and Harry Frese, the old man are owner of the Red Sox. He ordered it played it every home game and then back in the day of football commissioner in the late thirties early, 40 said. We gotta play before every game because you're tied in the World War one and time in the World War two And it went from being something that was specialized and really used during a time of war to honor the country to boost people Spirits. Tonto have that sense of nationalism before you started an event, you know, Normally it was in an era where it was very nationalistic in terms of Thought process of people across the country. Now we're into questioning everything mode in our world. But back then it was a hell of a lot simpler. It was held. I mean, the message wasn't money down. There wasn't social media. They weren't all these people were going to react differently to all these things and You know, Part of the reason I mentioned. I don't know if a member of the Dallas media is sort of brought this up and exposed it, but sure is that wasn't a major story. Then. Sure, Cell has been the national story for the what would preseason games or we're looking at here about two months of NBA basketball. That has been played where the Dallas Mavericks have not played the national anthem that Mark Cuban stepped out and said, Hey, here's what we did and talking to community leaders and, you know, having Silver called me and said we got played, so we're gonna play it and you know we could show him that we're stood standing with the players. All that stuff. Look There's a lot of easy fixes to this quite honestly. But it does come down to whether you listening right now to the dress show here on CBS Sports radio think that it needs to be a part of the presentation. Because again, let's be real, right. This is all entertainment. Whether you're going to a Celtics Pistons game. On some Rando Wednesday night with US 6 30 start time. And it's just okay. It's another game on the schedule. You're excited for it. And now, right, you get to go know all that stuff. If he didn't get a national anthem in game 28 of a regular season isn't going to break your heart. 11 started really tied around nationalism. Has now become an accepted almost mandatory part of the entertainment presentation, right? And I think there is a happy medium that can be had. The problem is On the whole, we're going to have on reasonable people on both sides of this because this inherently does end up getting political. Unfortunately, and I would like to try to look at this. It 855 to 1 to four, CBS. I understand those thoughts are going to be mixed in. But are we now at the point to where during every regular season NBA game? We gotta have the national anthem played. Do we need before every N f l game, all 256 of them during the regular season. Do we have to have the anthem played and let me ask you this folks. How many of you have noticed the change in the NFL's television presentation to wear the anthem isn't something that on the whole your sitting down and watching Most weekends when you watch your team You know, maybe they show them Where were they coming back from commercial break. But you know, it's not. Ah, here for Game two of the regular season until that stadium we welcome in talented fish farmer.

"But there's some people that came in. They spent their whole life trying to be good for the company and those people are taken care of so for all those haters out there. Just know that there is a heart underneath that company and it takes care of his own and Howard is A prime example somebody busted his ass and influenced so many guys and help something. I mean Tommy talked about the folders. I remember Bradshaw came in the room and he saw like two of the folders on the floor and he he knew who who put those together because he went off USA. Hey why is this was before litter with with the papers guys? Pick that up like you know. There's people that sit back and and put that together for you so you can. Nobody did that for me when I came. And he cut a promo and it was like young people. The people like me and Tommy appreciated because we needed. We both were disorganized and we needed help. But you know these young people mad they have to be coaxed into doing the right thing and just like Tommy put notice on that soda. Brash also Bo. Vr should be commended for respect. And how work? I really love that. Just in I've visited Howard and I visited a lot because of you know I would say he's about hour and a half two hours from me The first time when ingested what saw him he was looking and he started hitting his head and you started rocking back and forth any kept saying. Is this a dream am I dreaming and A lot of people said Howard had a stroke. Howard had a rare genetic brain disease that His brain was shrinking. And I hate that because the whole outfit the fink and he was slowly losing his his mind. He he had stroke like symptoms but he kept falling because of of his brain and when he saw me injustice in his face and I was like yeah. Howard it's mean J- Justin and it's like what are you doing here and I'm like we're here to visit you. And he was just like Oh my God and just that of happiness and I didn't post pictures on social media every time I took them all the time I would say him neither did just because Howard had such pride. He didn't want the people to know that he was sick. He want people to feel sorry for him and he was literally just sitting there. Watching the mets game up until it was time to watch wrestling and I I posted a pitcher last night on social media and everyone kept hitting me up about the note over my shoulder and I went back and I looked and this is one Howard was in a bad state. Howard couldn't sadly use a cell phone anymore because of his hands If you handed him the phone and that's what I would do every time when I would visit. I would face him with Justin And Howard's medical note above my shoulder says please put channel forty three on at a p about tonight's wrestling is on. That was his medical note. He loved us. We were his family. That's all he had. Ed like Mark said he loved performing in front of a fads and he loved us a Additionally da I really just wanted everybody to know what he meant to me but how much we meant to him and what we did and I'm sorry for cried. I've cried all day yesterday and I'm just GonNa lay out because I want Justin to talk if he can but Making going and see Howard and during these times we can't see people but just reach out to people because I can't see him anymore and I hate it. I really do and adjust and I know this is a emotional time for you as well When I visit with Tommy And on facetime calls to when he would face time in from from being there Tell me as you guys though is Tommy and instead of bathing him instead of talking to him you know. Tummy. Tommy was just being. Tommy and Tommy was trying to get them to laugh and Tommy was trying to just to pick his brain still and talk wrestling into get him to. To remember all these things and and it worked Tummy would start talking like Howard to Howard at men how remove start talking like Howard is and they both just started like announcing like Tommy and it was awesome it just kind of revived them and brought back the old bank and He was so great visiting him all those times and and being there for him it was kind of a weird situation because from what we understood people you know. It wasn't a public thing. Nobody knew where he was There was a part of me that was that I wish we could like somehow let the fans know so people could record videos and send videos into let Howard know how much everybody meant to them but You know wasn't my place to do that. I I don't know the right coal to make on that but we told how we're there and every time Thompson there with them Tommy would tell him how much he meant. Everybody and he did he. He meant so much all of us in the wrestling business. Who got to work with him and he meant so much to everybody who grew up watching wrestling. Howard was the voice. Our was the greatest of all time and that voice just went and had with with all the great memories from wrestling and I compose myself Howard like again he. I remember the last time I saw him because at unit after February I I couldn't go see him one. At last time I saw him. He was just literally just sitting in a chair by himself. He had two great people who who were Fans and took great care of Howard and he was just sitting just looking off in the distance and I walked up and there was another woman over sitting next to him and he was staring at me and I was like what think and he was just like I know you and I was like yeah. It's dreamer and I went from yonkers New York and he went. Tommy Dreamer and I was like who's your rat and from that moment on he was just normal and I was just like Howard and then I was telling about the Matt's because he was a met Fan Van A jet fan a season ticket holder. Since Day one he had so much useless knowledge about rock and roll and music and we were just sitting there Just talking but it was always wrestling. That brought him back to being normal. And when I say normal just you know. We're all going stir crazy and right now for just being home. He was that was going to be his home and he. He knew that was going to be his home till the end and But he's still kept on being like I still got a lot of gas left in this tank Cuba. We say and I gave him a house a hardcore shirt and he never wore and I was a coward. Why don't you wear my shirt? And he would just be like a I go. Where is my shirt on the back? No no no and I was like because it was another wrestling company shirt and I was like come on. How're you GONNA announcer musical? I don't WanNA GET VINCE MED. I don't want to give Vince Mad. Right. And I'd be like screw them. Howard come work for me. I need you. Who's I Tommy. Tommy don't get me in trouble That was just Howard man and God. I can tell so many stories even like when Josten said you know. My father had five masters He lost his vision. You had Parkinson's disease and people just use to treat him like an I used to hear people say When he was walking my mom. Oh like why she with that retarded person and it really would bother me because I was like. My father was brilliant and I never treated him differently. I don't treat people with Anything illnesses because you know Howard was a prisoner in his own body And if you just do things to spark that back and it was just awesome and like you know mean. Justin visited him. Why put him on facetime? I remember the one time like he was just talking. And then there's a or I just gotta go and I was like we gotta go. How would you have nothing to do? He was I got. I got things. Tommy I got things like you got shit. We're going to have to at one day and and I apologize just and we didn't get to you a lot because you know the show is just about the only got about thirty seconds left and I you know maybe one day we're going to have to deal with just a special episode. You know with you guys just short of about how. Yeah just sharing stories. You Know Justin Justin Roberts again. I I think you've grabbed a math. Oh I think you've definitely but you know he's passed the torch to you because I think you're absolutely brilliant at what you do and thank you for joining us today. You do an amazing job each and every Wednesday and and I'm sure that Howard Finkel Was a big influence on you. Thank you very much Howard was a huge influence. You know I grew up on listening to Howard and when I first started announcing. That's what I did. I just went out there and try to be Howard and That's always been my influence and I modeled myself after Howard. Sure sure how. Copy kid go ahead. Tommy just saying I mean just in for me. It was dusty. Rhodes for Justin it was Howard and Howard. You Justin used to call the office. I always say just in it. Was that weird annoying kid that always wanted to be the announcer and you know Howard would give him advice in Justin You should share that. I started calling Howard. I was in junior high. I used to always the story that I used to call. W W magazine because they left the office office phone number in the magazine and when you look through a magazine at all the names of the people who work in the magazine Howard was the one that I recognized from TV. So I used to call starting junior high and throughout high school and call periodically and just have random conversations with Howard talking wrestling and I would always call up and say hey this is just in from Chicago. And he knew it was me and he would always take my phone calls and give me you five ten minutes. Whatever it was and it was called started in junior high and they went through Through our last call not that long ago. Wow that's amazing. Joey styles Hit ME UP. And he wanted me to share a story. 'cause he's pretty devastated as well because that was our was a big influence on him and He wrote when I interviewed at WWF headquarters after quitting easy W in May of nineteen ninety four. I returned in July which I totally didn't even know Howard was in the interview with the head of HR. I asked him how his Tuxedo matches with Harvey wimp. Woman were going. And he totally K. Fade me and his and he answered if they were like shoot fights. It reminded me. I reminded him of it when we went out for lunch while working together. Dot Com fifteen years later and he apologized and he said I didn't work for WWF. I work for E. C. W. so he didn't WanNa ever break K. Fehb even during an interview Joe said I was so nervous my first day when I arrived at W. Dot com offices and immediate fell better. When Howard welcomed me. We became great friends and he was one of the kindest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing I will miss him every day The fact that Howard did that was so Howard For me I got to work Just like Mark. You know behind the scenes Seeing Howard like running around this wrestling. And W W was Howard's life and it's what Howard loves so much and It did crush when it took them off the road but I remember when I went to the office and I shared an office with Howard and thank you about it now. It was just like I didn't like the job by being with Howard and just reminiscing about all the stuff that we used to do. Really Really Helped pass the time for me because I wanted to be was arrested for but I wasn't given that opportunity but when I tell you Howard lived breathed Wwe was the most loyal person To wwe he was the number one employee and he took that with pride. I don't know of anybody told his story of how Howard joined the. Wwe On where he basically was an usher and he wanted to see wwe at the building. He went to the building manager. And then Vince McMahon They had a great event. And Vince McMahon. Basically said he wanted to meet the guy who is responsible for this and Howard's boss introduced him to a Vince. They forged a friendship and then he was the first employee. Wow creative back in the day was him Vincent. Pat and he did every single job He was just awesome and when I was in the office you know not only would you know. Everyone is sharing all these stories. He would Howard's job. We used to get envelopes. And it would tell you you're weeks travel. Your weeks Appearances the house show loops and then what the. Tv's where the miles and Howard would literally stuff. Every wrestlers envelope guys would take these envelopes and just throw it on the floor. Didn't know that was Howard's job but how it literally took time every single week for every wrestler and shoved your travel and made sure where you are and then called every wrestler in the wwe every week of your travel. Now you get it all via email but that's what Howard did When I was with him so And do let me tell you myself. John Lauren Itis Mark Ronco. We had how that office was operating. Because Howard would just do stuff and like me and mark mark would like walk by and be like Howard God damn it and then Howard would look at me like what did I do. And then all of a sudden Khurana would just come running clothesline in his desk and we would start fake wrestling at. He's like Balmy. The suit music suit be the rats. And Howard Howard. We having faked matches in the office. It was just a and this almost every day and he launch for people I want to say that I set the rules in wwe for no more pornography on computers that would be the Tommy Dreamer law but Howard they set the law of. You can't live in your office because just like that movie. There were times at Howard would just sleep at the office because he had either so much work to do and or he just he just stayed there all the time And W W took care of him till the end and They really need to be commended for that. Because Man Howard as as you see via social media how much one man's life influenced so many others but I've never seen somebody So passionate for his job you know I. I don't want to make this about the company because as Howard Day but is is hard not to to give credit to a company like the W W when so much shit goes wrong And so many people attack it like is is the tallest trees that get the most win the WWe is the tallest tree and entertainment where the Hollywood admits it or not our sports all the sports companies in the world the WWE is influences all of the athletes that play the professional sports and Hollywood and not everybody. There's some prudes out. There that look down on pro wrestling but the wwe and should be commended for doing jobs like it's not even looked at as a job of taking care of his own for every time that there's a a situation where you have to have budget cuts or you have to cut talent back because the company is not making money the company's losing money and you hear the story of how the company pays all the bills you darren draws dauth like they take care of them and even if it don't affect me you know how to take care of me..

"And sorry Logo Salvatore Man Bill. He's big Bro Below. Never been somebody's. I think Howard had to do that type of thing quite a bit. When snooker was in his prime. Unfortunately the Rock was pretty close. You know with the snooker when he was growing up and he said that I think a certain way that Bob the CAD Bradley Driving Jimmy around and say Jimmy. We just take a look out the window. He'd see book lined on the block ago. Not deny pro a whole town back. L'hotel yeah so so Howard probably had to try to cover for him on many an occasion. Yeah but he did. He did a good job doing it. And you know mark and I obviously for most of the show today have been talking about Howard Finkel and and and make you mentioned You know it's been such a rough forty eight hours and you know everyone's dealing with this now whether it's a friend a family member a neighbor you know of of people now you know losing their job you know. We're over a month in to this. Quarantine and businesses are suffering and and and right now. Everyone's feeling the effects of what's going on there. There's nobody that's listening to us right now. That aren't gonNA feel the effects of this somehow some way and you know hearing of all the people that were released furloughed and and I guess make you just gotTa hope that the dust settle soon in that. You know a lot of the people that were like. Oh we're going to be able to land on their feet and be able to either a come back to the wwe or or find another place quickly where you know. They can get back to work. I also These are really unprecedented times and hope for the good of everyone It turns around quickly. Hey if I could I know you're gonNA talking about Justin and Tommy but Jeez I remembered Justin telling me about visiting Howard with Tommy. I knew the Tommy visited them. I didn't realize the extent how regularly he visited. And that's what a credit to. Tommy you know I mean I. It was within a week. I was thinking to myself. I would ask. Tommy if I go on one of these visits And you know dirtiest words in the English language are what? If so should've could've would've I wish I had. And it's really a credit to the guys who did Make that trip to see Howard and Tommy was probably the best friend Howard had for the last couple years. Whose life would you say? Yeah he was he was very close very there and and don't think right. Now the General Lo and Kathy morale man they in mark around like you know never we never talk about mark around but you know being ahead of talent relations and how man it's painful like you know Margaret Friend of mine and Hopefully he's not mad that I put this out there but he was very sad that he had put this word in with people is hard and only i Bernard on when I was at GM and we did The angle where I I had to sail off into the sunset to get body parts replaced and so being. Gm on raw is like being An actor on a soap opera instead of getting killed off. You get fire right and I asked Stephanie to make you know to put in that line about how I never action fired. Anyone you know you want the trappings of responsibility without actually having to make the tough decisions. And I'm lucky I've never had to do anything like that. In my life I can only imagine The burden that comes down someone like mark shoulders. That's really difficult position to be and And I would never want to do that now. It was it was horrible for him and he used to he he would see me at the arenas and he he came up to me that man we got. Howard coming in his car gets in and he was always excited man about Howard and he used to go and see Howard and a lot of people don't realize how much of a family you know we are. You know we don't talk to each other every day We don't we don't we don't right. We don't always send messages. But when we see your body is like a family reunion together for a market where together on the set of the big show show A lot more than I do. Ricucci But we had we had a blast and then even have to spend the whole day together. You know I don't even think quiche asked us? I think we said he keeps. You WanNa stop by the school and All three of us did even I mean all four show is there as well and it was something you do. Yup You look out for each other. You have a blast. You may not see each other for a while. I had a guy You Know Fan. I'd met in UK going through tough physical time and he thought I had something against him personally. Because I hadn't been in touch for a year and I was like that's delay our business. Is You know you don't talk to someone for a year or two. They arrive into the. You know the company you ride with them. It's like you pick up where you left off so Yeah this it's been a really tough time for all of us and So I've reached out to him for the guys and You know I wish I had Like I said I wish I could tell them. Keep your head up you land on your feet. But that's not that's not the case right now non that right now is is In in the same thing with e w like man like they haven't announced that they're leading anybody go or stuff as far as I know but I'm sure that they're not going to be hiring anybody like right now with you know how bad it is and you know you got money going out the door and then coming in like is hard. It's hard to understand that every business in the world is suffering if it is a business you know I saw you know I I mean I know. There's you hit to get politics involved but I woke up with a few days ago to find. Wbz and all that heat for being deemed an essential business in Florida. And it's like okay. I can understand people. Don't think so but on the other hand how to even put a price tag. I'm being able to supply A country or you know world with what did we do. Five seven hours of Weekly you know brand new programming at a time when nobody else is doing it. Like the world's depressing enough I think you know what we're doing as an industry and I'm including aws in that It's it's unheard of because no one else can do it and I think You know in this case the world needs to understand that before they pass judgment What we do and the decisions that are made worse it was. Yeah I mean. I always felt like this. I would even say this when I was on the outs with the company which would happen every eighteen months or so. We like you know what it's always there for you. You know you can complain. Sometimes it'll break your heart every Monday And you know you know Tuesday. Was you know the time smackdown or whatever but you know Mondays? It's always there for you And they and it always you know unless there's some other catastrophe strikes. It always will be and I think that's something that helps get by I believe that when you enter the doldrums of of the winter that it's the arrival of World Rumble. That makes people feel better. And then once the rumble hits I mean. February-march are miserable months. There the worry of Marxist probably the most miserable month them all. It's like a maniac coming up you know like I don't. I don't think people understand how much good the show does the company and the business as a whole for all its fault you know it's It lifts people up and I give credit to all the people out there especially Wrestlemainia like you couldn't tell the difference in effort between You know People performing in front of zero fans and people performing in front of eighty five thousand. It was really a great time to be a fan and stand up and be proud like I was proud like a father. You know really Bringing the best out in people and I'm just. I'm glad that they can continue to do that. Until you know Pandemic eases up on this little bit. Yeah and you just gotTa hope and pray that this time next year we'll be able to see wrestlemainia in front of seventy seventy five thousand fans. I mean at this point. That's even endow as crazy as itself. I know you know it's it's I know. There'll be people out there off all easy on the company payroll or looking for job. It's like you know I've knocked the company in the past I probably will again but I don't see how you can fault them For the product. They're putting out. I wish I I don't know the decisions that go into letting people go. I know when you're publicly held company puts a You know the bottom line becomes more important than it would have if it was privately held but I. I don't know the decision decision making. It's a terrible time we without a job but strictly from a performance standpoint. What the company offers is something. You really can't put a price tag on will make I mean I think what we I you know the last time we had John. Which wasn't that long ago. You know things were obviously a lot different in the world now but man I appreciate you make for like everything you do know fall. I suggest everybody follow you on Social Media at Real Mick Foley because you've done a tremendous job making this world smaller for everybody with your request away. You put yourself out there and you're just a great human being and I can't say enough good things about you as a person And it goes well beyond what you did what you did in Iran. It's about who you are and what you do right now and I appreciate you and I thank you so much for the time and again follow you at Real Mick Foley and and hopefully sometime soon. We'll be able to go to Real Mick Foley DOT COM and purchase tickets to see one man show you know I I love nothing more. You know this victim to promote you as much as possible. "Xm APP the greatest ring announcer of all time. Howard Finkel who? We lost yesterday morning at the age of Sixty Nine. And we're going have some great guests. Mick. Foley is going to be joining us in just a few minutes. And we're also going to be joined by Justin Roberts and Tommy Dreamer this morning so this a lot to get into for sure mark on today's edition of Busted Open. You know I'm looking forward to time in Justin coming on but I'm also dreading that you know. Every time you get together with somebody different like their motions. Just pour off again this. Yeah Yeah it's GonNa be emotional mark. Let's bring in right now. Somebody who's been just a. I mean you talk about forget about hall of Hall of fame wrestler Mark and you know this and and you and I have gotten really close so I don't mind saying this like somebody who's a hall of fame human being Somebody that you know just does great work. And he's been doing it since we've all been under quarantine and that is a Mick Foley and and I bring him in right now and make welcome back to bust it. Open really appreciate your time as always a Thanks for having me on. I know this A tough week for us Not only in the business for anyone who loves the wrestling business. That's tough week but I'm happy to be honest with you guys and make I bring up about what a great person you are and I think anybody who is a wrestling fan or listen to this show knows that. And you've always been great your time and you just you just great. What your time. In general I I know On social media you Kinda left yourself open for people who wanted video messages to to just reach out and you and I as soon as you did that make Mike. I don't think you really do what you were getting yourself into it. I guess I guess like a thousand requests later. I guess I guess you started a tonsure. Stand that yeah. Well I got the I got two thousand on Yesterday and then I found myself like four in the morning sending setting out some more because there are more requests there and I enjoy doing them and it makes me feel like I'm doing something positive because like a lot of people you're just stuck in your house you know it's like you're not being asked you know heroic measures you mark knows what it's like you know we like to chip in and be part of the community with WBZ and visit people visit hospitals. I remember after Nine eleven you know going down. I think it was called. Roses are Rosetta. There's a place where you would serve Policemen and firemen and We would go down and do that type of thing and in this case it's like no just stay home so that was my little way of trying to help out and I really enjoyed it when you look at like everything that's going on and you're right. The last forty eight hours have been Just a nightmare door during this whole process. It's just been crazy when you look at a cow. You know it wasn't that long ago. Make your in our New York studios doing the show with us and you know and now over the last month over month now we all have been stuck in our homes and you have done a great job of you know. I think we've all found out How how small this world Really is when you when you look at it in that. We're in this fight together and I don't think there's ever been a fight like this where you know. It's not just our city our country it's the entire world in this fight together as one. Yeah Yeah it's You're right as this. They say this virus knows no Party lines knows no national borders. It's an equal opportunity offender. I mean striking people of Color More regularly but men. It's it's it's really tough striking the elderly It can be really depressing and You know compounding. That is the bad news of all the layoffs in WWe You know under most circumstances you can say reach out to people who've been let go and say hey keep your head up. There's plenty of work out there. Follow the drew McIntyre model of you know reinventing yourself in this case it's really tough to lamb and your feet. There's no work there's no shows it's really difficult time To be without a job for anybody that includes people in our business and then on top of that we here yesterday that think has passed on. So it's been it's been a brutal yeah like you said. Forty eight hours for us about those of us who loved the business and are in the business for sure mic. I wonder what you're doing right now. Like I know you you you love Howard like we all did Is there a memory Something funny that you could tell me so. I don't go and jump off the bridge by my house. Yeah over its Lyonnais but for me having grown up you know listening to Howard and going to the garden. I think one of the you know one of the most impactful things to me was the first time he got on the phone with me. Because I would have talked to Howard about travel before before I actually you know ever worked in event for wwe and it's just surreal because there's only one voice like that. And I have a feeling that it was Howard. I detailed in my book the First Meeting I had with Mr McMahon. Either the name quite right. You know figured Michael Folios. He was Mike. We WanNa do is best for Mike and I said it. You can't tell him he's got it wrong because he's been sick man and it was always my suspicion. The next time I met him I was but I was sick and I was like I just thought how fickle had to tell them how knows Howard knows everything right. He was a walking encyclopedia of our business. And the other the other member I have of Howard Is that? He had a way of making everything. Sound amazing and I can't tell you who was that wasn't able to make the event but it was a main event superstar. It was along the lines of Andre the giant and Howard go out breaks the bad news. What fortunately hundred up here taking his place really Jim and he have those nineteen thousand yes. That's exactly who we want to see it. Our tonight he was you know. Didn't not only the badge concern the best to ever do his job but as we were fortunate enough to know him can attest he was. Also a very dear man. And you know wonderful wonderful guy. You mentioned that he was in encyclopedia. Now is telling Dave right before you came on exactly the same thing like you could walk up. The how and say how. Who's WHO's the best grappler in the seventies the eighties denied and he would say oh mark and listened and he would give you details about I saw. How show were this guy wrestled this guy and you just like he like it was yesterday. He he can make anything sound great. How like is that something that we can like that we can harness and it can be taught or is it just something that is in yours not yeah I know? I don't know if we could ever harness the power of the think. I'm thinking to myself but I hope this doesn't come across as being disrespectful to Howard. I'm not sure it's the way he wants to be remembered. But at this point if it's something that makes us laugh I think it's a positive thing very played an on air role. When he was he was no longer announcing he became a generic holiday. Do you remember that Dave? And there was a time that there was some type of friction between him and Stacy Keebler and Stacey told him he'd better get moving and hours like something moving stacey. Somebody's sitting in my pants. I can't do his voice justice but he took whatever job was given to you know in heart he was still on that microphone at MSG but if he was going to be a you know. They're for comedic relief He was going to supply the best comedic. Relief he possibly. Could you know as talk and I remember that match? Like Howard fickle with willing Garcia over. Who IS GOING TO BE? Y- y- The redoubt Sir then Tricia. Stacey keebler interfered was like. Oh my gosh. And and make what maybe just half alowed acces move my microphone and Tommy Dreamer and I were talking about this yesterday like mic just talked about you know Andrea giants out and replacing Andre the giant Hillbilly. Jim and made it sound exciting where everybody got excited you. Tommy and I were both added event where it was supposed to be Jimmy. Superfly SNUKA and he was replaced by Salvatore Bellomo.

"Want you to come work for me. I mean the beetle first employee Vince. All something in Howard that he didn't see everybody else like he saw it. How was willing to work the extra how was willing to put down everything and put the WWF? I that's why he was the first employee he would have been. My first employee owned the company because he just worked harder and longer and more diligently than everybody else and he looked at it as it was his company. And you can't not on somebody and the way that he was. Honored is invincible. Probably get mad and calm in cause me out but Vince took care how to the end in. It'll probably be Vince. That bears and I know he is. I know he's torn up. But there will be a brighter day unknown while you mentioned Vincent Band and you mentioned how Howard Finkel was hired by his father. Vince McMahon senior when it was the W. wwf think about the fact. That Howard Finkel was there to see that national push. That Vince McMahon was able to give to the WWF. And then you look at all the wrestlemanias in Howard Finkel was a part of Wrestlemainia from one thousand nine hundred eighty five to two thousand sixteen. You know somehow someway you heard his voice throughout all those wrestlemanias whether it was announcing a new champion or announcing in the hall of Famers Mark. You Know He. I mean you know here we. Are you know doing this show on Friday? I'm sure for smackdown tonight. Mark they're going to have a tribute to him on Fox at the beginning and you know how's IT GONNA start isn't gonNA start with Howard standing behind the curtain and welcome to the jungle playing watch. I don't have to be in production room to get that. That is how we remember our in our. I've actually seen video footage of of it happening. So I know that they have and is gonNA is GonNa be show and all the boys are GonNa pop and how it just keeps popping. Boys Man just keeps on popping. The boys and I remember one time we were in the production office and Howard came in and asked for something. And Steve Ruben. He's a Komo and Howard is like you're one of the boys and he said I'm I am one of the boys and he said I was one of the boys before they were ever boys he was like so Rustavi Rueben. Just do your job active plus laugh because I never heard of Howard raises voice as somebody and it wasn't like he was being arrogant Stevens plan with him but it didn't come across he didn't respect. How like you should respect our at least the way. Howard felt like it should. He should've been respect them at the moment and he got put in line and a manager so.

"Dot com all right How about other other happenings on that show? Because we can start at the top Jake Roberts with vignettes hyping The Colt Cabana Lance Archer match and then Cabana also doing a video setting it up in in framing himself. Someone not to overlook in the nurture winning in twelve minutes. Yeah I like Buffalo. Thanks that another strong trauma by Jake. Roberts. I think he's doing really well in this role I think. I think he's actually one of the few people that genuinely benefits from not being founded the fans because it makes them more menacing when people aren't cheering for the fact that they've just got him cutting these promos and you don't hear any sort of crowd reaction to it it's like Oh this is like a diabolical guy and then not being colored by the fact that you're hearing people going jake the snake jake the snake so That I think helps. I love the Cabana Vignette. I thought that called it a fantastic job giving you reasons to thank you might win and why you'd WanNa see him when and endorsement more when he lost. I thought that was really well on particularly particularly so match. Itself was fine. I mean you. You should have done with it. Speaking they did. We've those throughout the show for the Hager Moxley match Arowana among them. Mike Goldberg Tasr. What did you think of the job? I'm calling a work on aerial thanking them. That Hager was going to have my suspicions about that one. I I enjoy. I enjoy the little videos. I thought that it made the match feel bigger. And I thought they were entertaining on their own Mike Goldberg just embracing being a parody of himself. I saw where he was. Good Enough Burger self-aware on television. Because it so you know tiresome and monotonous of the way that he just spits out the same you know same expressions. He's been doing for twenty years but here he was you know he was winking and mocking himself on so he was. It seemed pretty clear that although I mean it begs the question like if he's You can judge me if I'm using it wrong. Why why I was. Why in fact he you know he does that if he's if he's aware that it's a parody of itself but that's That's a separate matter. I just the I tried excalibur with like all of his games. Yes are you. Are you the type like if you see a bookshelf? You have to look. You have to like be pause or someone's house you WanNa see what books happened there. Show 'cause I totally de Excalibur. I don't remember what it was but it sounds like a impulsive urge But I definitely do. I'm curious that that is that is interesting to me and particularly you know someone like excalibur. Who's you know? He's he's in pro wrestling? He's got you know he's had a day job for you know for all these years Outside of it. And he's got a you know. Sort of an eclectic mix of Of different things in the background. See I I enjoy looking at that and the one that I got a kick out of the most was Ortiz. Doing it in a car. I WanNa see his place now and like why he didn't record from there like you have a bunch of different theories as to why that was his girlfriend's yellen atoms kids taking a nap. He's embarrassed by what a mess it is or it's pristine and it doesn't fit the gimmick. I all kinds of things ran through my absolutely all of the all of those possibilities. You're not much. The cost of living is really high in New York too so it can be less Less sort of amusing reasons as well but yeah I mean I. I like those things and still yelling in the background. When met Hardy on the interview Live cast five or so years ago and his wife was in the background and she just yelling. Why don't you get enough this? I've been waiting here for fifteen minutes. This shoot ended up. She's yelling in the background. That's like okay. He's increasingly like crazed and angrier as I complete a complete parrot of the original reaction. I would just tagged onto the end of some podcast randomly just to see what people would say. Yeah yeah put it on in the background aren't why why. Israel sky so angry it's accurate on Do so yeah? Oh yeah one one other from the from the random wants I think I do think and this is a minor point. Obviously I think that they should have told like one or two of the guys to pick Moxley and go like you know. Yeah Hager's really good but that's Moxley's domain because when they all go for hager it felt kind of contrived like oh here's much I'll pick. Jake Hager it. Didn't it didn't like as it kept happening. It didn't enhance my feeling that hey girl is going to win this match. Particularly when like The average fan is expecting mocks to win. And it's all that this world class may fight. I mean it's basically an outsider in that world and he's being Schmos so the idea that like Josh Thompson will be like. Oh yeah this guy. He can't be beaten. Any context is a little bit harder to swallow than if it was you know. Ken shamrock need. An extra dose of positivity in your wrestling podcasts will come join me out for L. "howard finkel" Discussed on The Wade Keller Pro Wrestling Podcast

"Pro wrestling todd Today cut out long. Wwe employees the first employee of wwe. According to Stephanie McMahon's tweets and longtime ring announcer the voice of many big time ring deductions Howard. Finkel died at age. Sixty nine your your thoughts on on Howard wrinkles contributions to this business game. I mean I think he was He was the best wrestling announcer. That there was Ring announcer that is in my view and I know my mic views are somewhat colored by the fact that he was also the voice my childhood but the he really check all the boxes. You'd want from an ring announcer. And he had the great booming voice he had the consistent canes but he'd measure things and make it more drawn out for the big announcements He made the show field bigger. And you know the the big announcement when he would go in new for. The championships was sort of a staple of the the biggest events in wrestling. I think he made the shows Feel more special and he didn't diminish or take away from it he didn't upstage anything at the same time he was He was really a big part of that company for very long periods of time. And IT'S A it's a shame they. They stopped using him well after he could have been useful to them You know giving them up and get in two thousand or so and moving on to other people. I don't think that Lilian Garcia was ever remotely as effective as Howard. Finkel wasn't that job and They could've gotten close to other twenty years out of maybe fifteen but I think it would've Enhanced via the big marlins had over the air. So yeah it's it's a It's a It's unfortunate to hear of his His passing and given it was a A rough week for The reputation of Vincent Man. It's hard not to look. It's hard to look it at at Howard. Finkel passing day after you know all of those cuts and with so much going on with the the. Tomo who the company the controversy over the the Florida decision and not be reminded of what Howard Finkel Ryan to solve in a lot of cases which is some of its worst tendencies and that he you know. He bullied that guy in front of the cameras and behind the cameras for you know for for decades on end for for really no good reason you know. He was humiliated time and time again. You know from being made to go out there and his his underwear acting like an idiot with a with a bushwacker is to be invoked as a crazy person having announcers ridicule him for no apparent reason To of course you know taking off a job that he was so Woah so good at and you know I I understand like I can understand a lot of bad instincts in in people like I mean like killing clearly wrong. I understand why people kill you. Know like lying is wrong. Understand why people why why people steal I. I'd never really understood the psychology behind demeaning people. And that's been a tendency that you've seen from Vincent man over the years You know with Howard finkel standing out in particular Jim Ross but also you know other various people. Typically people behind the scenes smaller people people that had less evolved. I just don't understand where that instinct to you. Know to try to make fun of people and to make them feel like less than what? What motivates people to act that way and particularly Finkel? A guy who was you know by all accounts are very nice guy very good at his job loyal employees for for forty years. And you know there was so much so much degradation to the guy and it you know it really it would stand out anyway but I mean I think it stood out particularly this week. I mean if there is going to be you know the sort of thing happening with just about anyone. He he makes the point more than You know that anyone else or brings that sort of That that That point up more than anyone else. So yeah those are. Those are a few thoughts on Heart Finkel we. We talked before the show. A little bit about Starting the book and I know that he talks about that in the book too so between the Rossville coming out and I need to read more detailed account. Because I've gotten super far into it. I've just kind of flip through a couple couple of areas that were initially interest in some of it was talking about Vince in the way that Vince treated Jr and Know it is part of his. It's part of his personality. Howard finkel probably the probably the most sympathetic figure the more you know regarding that because he was such a a representative of an era of greats like the great heritage of WWe and to kind of flip to the cosmetics are more important than the the booming voice when the camera. Frankly is on the ring announcer. It's almost always on the wrestlers. Come out on camera. Time into flip to making it more cosmetic and youthful instead of embracing the heritage and the lineage in history and just the the pipes and how good Howard was added combined. Yes with with the way that they treated him afterwards and you sort of felt like you know the kind of the court jester. I'm just GonNa do what I need to please the king and stay in his good graces but I I never. I never felt good about anything that had to do with with. Finkel being picked on because it didn't feel like buddies you know having fun at each other's expense or having fun everyone sort of in on it and equal. It felt like Howard deserved better and I felt that every time that something like the bullying by nine came up. Yeah I think there's a you know market difference between sort of teasing amongst friends and and meeting someone and they you know they clearly demeaned Howard. Finkel lots and lots of times over the years I you know. Look the I view like the ring announcing thing it's attached but it's also somewhat different in that you know Vincent. Man has his own you know his own idiosyncrasies of what he wants on the show and I don't think it's you know a a moral failing to to want more youthful ring announced. I think that's a wrong judgement. Call I don't think that fans care very much and I think that you know there are other factors that way and I think taking Jim Ross off the air before they should have made the announcing worse I think taking a Howard finkel off before you know before they should have made The overall ambiance of the show Worst but in each case you know just taking off the show is to judgment call. I mean that's you know that's understandable. That's that's the way he way things just like. I don't think it's you know it's a shot against You know take your pick of the people that he hasn't really seen it over the years you know the it's not a shot in at at at sea impacted and how did he didn't headline on to China and Saturday. There's nothing there's no judgment in while it's were either it's no it's not diminishing. Seattle punk intentionally to make a judgment call that he thought Johnson should be the one headlining. But that's different than you know the behind the scenes and frankly the in front of the camera stuff where they'll have certain characters out there in front of the camera and clearly. The announcers will be instructed to make fun of that person and you know you see that all the time and you. Can you very clearly pick up on it when it's happening because you know it's so distinctive and it's often very out of place with what's going on when you have some sort of character out there and all the sudden one of the announcers just starts in a very mean spirited way starts belittling them and Howard? Finkel was one of to me one of the earlier examples of that in that I remember when I was a kid and I started seeing it was jarring because when I was like this figure of respect you know he was this great announcer. He was you know he really added the show You know I thought a lot of them as a kid. And then you'd watch like these these vignettes where you'd have met their acting like an idiot and being dressed down his underwear and the announcers laughing him and it's like why. Why are they doing this this to him like what is? Why is this happening it? It didn't fit with the show or my my feelings. Towards who Howard? Finkel was and again. That sort of stuff happened with a lot of different people over the years but it stood out in in particular with with. Finkel because he was so good at the job and because it happened for such a long period of time and because people have talked about how he was affected about it affected by behind the scenes. Yeah Yep Yep anything else in our no.

"Everybody kept coming back to smackdown. It's kind of like prime time wrestling when we were looking to do primetime live and we were working on the raw show in describing what the raw show would be. We kept saying, yeah, it's going to be raw. It's going to be gritty. It's gonna be down in dirty will this. This became almost, you know, the man. This is going to be the smackdown. This is going to be man or shits on, and and the kept us in smackdown is is a term kinda like rock Elma allay. If the smackdown on you. Network liked it. We can't began to use that as the description before you know it that your name damage right there in front of me, it's MAC down and you're often running. It's not always as cutting dries, hey, I know I've got an idea. It was a lot of different people in a lot of different conversations. And when you were describing it so many different ways and trying to make people understand what is this show? Vince felt in a word smackdown described it. Do you remember any other names that were considered. Hell God, I don't. Sure that Howard Finkel probably had it and I'm not. I'm not kidding here. I'll bet you Howard probably had twenty five to fifty different suggestions of Russell town and just probably a million different names. Fucking tell me wrestle town was one of them. Just lots of me. Yeah, yeah, Russell town. That's okay. Our visual presents wrestle town of that has a ring to it. Yes, I'd I'd watch it just on the Howard presents. Fake presentation is 'cause UPN involved in the naming process at all? Yes, yeah, they were. They were definitely consulted in. We we through all these suggestions by them and saw, say they, they, they really liked it. They felt it was edgy and they liked it because it was different, and it was a lot different than raw or superstars challenge or any of that other stuff that we'd had before. Wait, we caught to. I can't tell you, you know, some of the names. We talked about resurrecting the main event, even really? Yeah. The main event, not necessarily, obviously not Saturday night's main event. Taking confusing, have Saturday nights invent on Thursday. You don't. I think it would have, but why not? It could be Saturday nights main event on Thursday. The real question here. Do you think there was. Any interest in Vincent man. Considering a second show had thunder, non existed. At that point, man, he wasn't, we were winning. He was a pan tension to their shift now, but I'm saying that the the second show coming up with all of the other shit going on. Yeah, Vince was look into to expand because he was looking to take the damn thing public and he wanted he wanted as much exposures could possibly get. So it wasn't like we were going to another cable thing. This was again, it was a big deal man because it was broadcast, I think that's lost on people. Well, yeah. I mean, I think a lot of wrestling fans just think of them both as Thursday shows and don't really take into account that one was cable while it was arguably one of the number one cable channels. The other was down store broadcast, but still broadcast everybody could get it. Yeah, no, no argument for me and you know what? Everybody can start losing their hair to. And that's what we want to tell you about four hymns dot com. I'm.
