"This was journalism ethics. Like my first class at syracuse. You do not get paid by the people. You are covered. I remember talking to. I don't think he'll mind me. I spoke to jay glazer. Who was at fault. He was like the only other broadcast new there because he has. What do i do. I don't wanna do this. I didn't have an agent. I didn't have anyone to talk to. So i said look there's no other place. It's not like you're working for you know You're coming ban. You could go to turner or you know. Espn and all these fit poses so it was like you want to be on tv. You gotta take this gig so that made me like close to them. But also from the get-go created problems. Because while i had this job on fox i also had this other job that was completely independent of the u. of c. And they would increasingly get mad at me for talking about things like free agency and competition unions and things like that and there was never no one ever said. Don't speak about these things but i. I would notice that they would get mad at me whenever i did. You know what i mean. So that's two thousand twelve all the way to two thousand and sixteen. I survive two thousand sixteen. I don't survive. There was a fighter came on my show who complained about his pay. Literally day later. I get a call from my boss worked for these people. Four and a half years got a call and he said. We're going to have to let you go. I said why Ufc ass. I was like that's it after four like i was. I became a dad multiple times. I was sick. i never missed a day. I never got a story wrong. You guys made me take this deal. I tried to figure out a way out of it. And now you're letting me go. I was very hurt by. That obviously was a great job and they paid pretty well. So between march of two thousand sixteen in june of two thousand sixteen. I just became like a man possessed and i tried to break every single new story like everything and i did i. It was a great run and the ufc was convinced that There was like a mole feeding me this info like a really crazy and then finally we And that's not true. There was no. I just had sources for like any other great reporter. Finally we get to june. It's you have c. One ninety nine. I'm at the forum in inglewood covering events. I happen to break a big story involving brock lest returned to the scene. Usually rick store. You're at home hotel car. This time i'm in the media. Room coincidentally so detail you hit send and you just turn looking around like how long till everyone starts looking at me. "At syracuse. You go to the new house school while you're there. Are you thinking about what sports you would wanna focus on or is it a general education and then when you're released into the wild it's where can i get a job so i remember applying to new house. I also apply to be you ithaca college. Emerson those places and I got an acceptance letter from syracuse. Congratulations you've been accepted into the school of visual and performing arts into speech communication and i was like i did not apply to speech and so i found out that that's where they put. All the rejects. The didn't make into new house. They put you in there and they told you if you get a three point. Five or higher gpa You can then apply to transfer right. So i said all right you're gonna ruin fan. Multiple language might have helped you get that little. It didn't know i was just. I was using it for that school. It was like speechwriting and things like that. So you know a lot of Spoken stuff. But i was a little like i was like okay. If i'm going to go. Obviously i don't want to be a speech major. This was in the dream. I'm going to go. And i'm gonna put everything into trying to get into a new house and that kind of changed the I guess like the path of my entire time at new house. Because i became so obsessed with get excuse me at syracuse became so obsessed with getting to new house that i kinda like shut off everything at the school and didn't allow myself to even have fun in any regard because that's a buyer three point five. Jeez i don't like i didn't really understand what that meant because we don't have like a gps system in quebec soza. Geez i just got to put everything into this Eventually i got a three point. Five one and i transferred. Yeah so i mean. I would have had one friend. I probably wouldn't point five But i remember actually my first month there for the first time in my life. The History Of Kayfabe
"Earned. Modern professional wrestling began back in the early twentieth century. When carnivals would put on catch wrestling exhibitions this was real wrestling. The competitors were actually wrestling with each other and there would be prize money to the winner. The wrestlers would often competing against locals. Who would win a prize. If they could defeat the carnival strongman so they really did have to know how to wrestle and fight. Unfortunately many of the competitive matches were really boring the bouts rough and nothing more than wrestling holds. Which could last for over an hour watching grown men grab each other for. That long really wasn't that entertaining. The whole point of carnival wrestling wasn't terrestrial it was to make money. Eventually the promoters figure out they could sell more tickets if they made the matches more interesting and that is how started the word k. Fame but self comes from kearney. Talk which is a pig. Latin type of language which was spoken by carnival workers k. Fehb just means fake. As the carnivals began predetermining the winners of fights it was a shortstop to adopting the tropes which were used in all good dramas good versus evil heroic comebacks treachery and betrayal. All of those became part of professional wrestling in order to put on a better show and sell tickets. However at no point did they ever say that the performance was predetermined people had to think they were watching illegitimate competition. So a bad guy and a good guy couldn't be seen together before or after a show the head to commit to their characters all the time. This is the primary difference that separates k. fehb from acting actors perform role and. Everyone knows that they're watching performance in k. Fehb the performer is living the role even when they're not performing and they're trying to convince the audience that israel for decades keeping cafe was the single biggest rule in professional wrestling. It was the wrestling equivalent to magicians not. Divulging the secrets. The primary care mechanism was having baby faces which were the good guys in heels which were the bad guys. The bad guys had to be bad guys all the time. If they were asked for autographs by fans at an airport they would often refuse to sign an insult. The fans just to keep k fehb when wrestlers travelled between cities heels and faces would often have to travel in separate cars and stay in different rooms. Just to keep k fehb. They would even have different locker rooms backstage. Occasionally they would screw up. Wrestlers would get in big trouble if they broke k. Fehb in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven. The iron sheik. Who was a heel was traveling with. Hacksaw jim duggan. Who has a face. They were both pulled over and arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine when the arrests made the news to cause controversy. Because these two guys were supposed to be enemies yet. They were traveling with each other on rare occasions. A wrestler may go off script and try to really injure another performer. Any sort of predetermined match or storyline is called a work in wrestling circles. And something which is real or off script is called a shoot in two thousand and four for example. The wwe was running a reality show where the contestants compete to become professional wrestlers. One of the contestants was daniel putter. Who is a real life. Mma fighter on an episode of monday night raw wrestler. Kurt angle issued a challenge for one of the contestants to come out and fight him. According to the script putter was supposed to come out and quickly lose however he decided to actually fight for real on live. Tv when angle wasn't expecting it. Putter tried to put england submission hold instead of losing however kurt angle is a real life olympic gold medalist in amateur wrestling and would have none of it. Technically fehb died in professional wrestling in nineteen eighty nine. When vince mcmahon the owner of the then. Wwf testified before the new jersey state legislature that wrestling was scripted in the matches predetermined this was done in order to avoid being taxed and regulated. Like a real sport today in professional wrestling cave is pretty much dead the. Wwe hosts our own documentaries where wrestlers talked out of character and will often break cafe within their own shows however as cafe has died in professional wrestling it seemingly has taken off in other parts of our culture one of the best examples would be mohammed ali yes that mohammed ali to be sure. All of his boxing matches were real and he was one of the greatest boxers in history however the persona. he created of the arrogant loud rhyming. Fighter was total k. fehb he recalled in a nineteen sixty nine associated press interview about a chance encounter with professional wrestler gorgeous george in nineteen sixty one in las vegas. He said quote. I got it from seeing gorgeous. George russell in las vegas. I saw his aides spraying deodorant and opponents corner to contain the smell. I also saw thirteen thousand full seats. I talked with gorgeous for about five minutes after the match and started being a big mouth and a brighter. He told me people would come to see me. Get beat others would come to see me. When i'd get coming and going and quote alley began creating poems about how pretty was and how ugly. His opponents were his interviews with sportscasters. Like howard cosell. Legendary gorgeous georgia's prediction was absolutely true. Love him or hate him. You couldn't ignore. mohammed. Ali

"Ready to hopefully entertain you for the next Let me be exact. Two hours and 53 minutes on this the eighth of December 2020 in the year of the zombie Apocalypse. Morning, fellows and girls. Good morning, Dave. Logan, are we good morning, You're doing good. We've got your wash on Joe Walsh it on a little bit later, right? Maybe he's excited about that. That is huge. I am talking about a big rock star, have you? You probably talked to him before, but I've never never have Yeah, We've had him on a couple times over the years. Been a long time, though. You have to ask him a few members going shopping with me exactly what he does. I bet he does. He went shopping with you. You will link boot shopping and cry Baby Ranch. I spent a morning with him. What was that, like? It was great. We had a great day. I learned a lot about him and really enjoyed my time. I mean, I was in my twenties. It was You know, it's like an icon sitting with an icon. And absolutely absolutely. He was here with James Gang in town, doing a show at red rocks, and we called him at his hotel room. And they're like, you know, Can we do anything for you? And he said, I'd like to go buy some boots. So can you pick me up? So then I picked them up into Mexico by something, Baby ranch. Yep. Cool. That'll be good to get him on. Yeah. Today today marks the 40th anniversary of the murder of John Lennon. Talk about an icon. Um, We talked a lot about that on the morning show. Remember hearing the news on Monday night football? That's right. That's right, Lord Cosell. Howard Cosell pretty much broke the news to everybody. Yeah. If you were watching the game, he did. Yep. And and it was interesting. We also found out today that He wasn't sure he should be the one to do it. We have some audio of Frank Gifford in him off air in a break. And Frank Gifford talked them into making that announcement. I think, Howard maybe thought maybe a news guy should do it. But Frank, you know, talked him into into doing it and interestingly enough. Uh, Howard Cosell had interviewed John Lennon on Monday night Football. Six years previous to that weird and you know what I thought was interesting, he said. This is just a game. You know, because they're talk because they're doing it during that, like, well, should we interrupt the football? You know, they're trying to figure out there like this is just a game right? And John Lennon's death transcended Monday night football. Pretty interesting. And then the guy that killed Linen. That day, hey, was fixated on John Lennon and he want he knew he wanted to kill John Lennon, right, and he had talked about it. For months that day, he had an encounter with James Taylor. I remember reading that. Yes, and and very weird, Uncomfortable encounter that made James Taylor very creeped out. And later that day, he kills John Lennon. James Taylor was in a nearby hotel room heard the gunshots. And and and said, Yo, he was talking on the phone to somebody you could say Somebody just got shot that on the streets. Wow. And just think of James Taylor feels like that. That could have easily been him. When that happened. And then, um, Mark David Chapman, the guy that's still married. T O is still married to the woman. That he was married to then. She stayed with him. They got married in Hawaii. I haven't even followed. What happened to him? Is he had a prison? No, no, he's in prison. But she stayed married to him. She lives in Hawaii. He's in Buffalo, New York, some prison and they have conjugal visits. Once a year, she comes back. They have sex in a some prison trailer. Apparently, he's got a ministry in the prison. She's very religious, and she she thought that She said. I love him, you know, and I'm going to stay married to him. Wow. Conjugal visits was just the TV thing. I didn't even know that exactly really existed in prisons. Mm. I don't know if every prison is the same. I don't think so. I'm not sure about that. I don't know either the freedom when you go to prison, so I think it depends where you're at. Well, I think somebody like him. Price should have any freedom, right? You wouldn't think no Is he in for life? I would think he was 20 years to life. He's had 11 parole hearings. Most recently couple of months ago, he had one and he expressed deep remorse and tried to explain why he did It. He said. I knew I wanted to kill somebody really famous so that I would be famous. And he thought John Lennon was the most famous person that He could get to. He's never getting out. I mean, there's that really, I mean, they talk about crazy. Yeah. Didn't Charles Manson always go to the parole board to or when the girls was Manticore? They always okay. They all went. Why did they even do that? Just to give him a chance to speak. Well, I think Legally, you have to be based on the sentence. You you have to allow a parole hearing. If you have a life sentence. Do you get a parole hearing? I think it varies. I think it depends on the The exact sentence. I mean, there are some sentences that are life sentences without the possibility of parole. Okay, So then you would never never never There you go. What sharks me that Charles Manson would have had that. Right or nature and, you know, California. Different they laid. They look at things a lot different in California. That's it, really. I think that's a phrase that would apply and so many different ways. They look at things a little bit differently in California. You don't mean California's not like It's not like Iowa. You know, it's not like Mississippi. You know, California is kind of its own thing. Its own place. They don't have the death penalty there. No, they don't. So you just sit in prison for the rest of your life? You know, they I believe they had the death penalty. One. Manson was convicted and then they waive the death penalty after so he was never gonna There's no death penalty here either. Is it? Well, we have. Colorado is on death row. Maybe there is I don't know how that works like you. I mean, we have four prisoners on death row, right or Not sure we had a texture 970580. How about the iconic An American hero, Chuck Yeager. He passed away 98 or so Yeah, was he was in his mid to late nineties. Talk about using the whole runway. Wow. And then also, Dave, I don't know if you saw Dick Allen passed away. I saw that former Philadelphia Philly M v P. Baseball player 78 years old. Ah, March 23rd 2020 Governor Pulis. Abolished the death penalty here in Colorado. And there's three people on death roll. So you stay on death row death row after The death penalty is abolished. I believe. Yeah, so the three, they say, but I think another governor could come in and reinstated. You know, it's kind of how it goes. It says the three death row prisoners to life without the possibility of parole and two of them went to my high school, which is very disturbing, right? Huh? Hey, By the way, we should remind everybody that today is Colorado gives day. Colorado gives dot or g'kar..

Hard to go back to the game. After that news flash, which in duty bound we have to take Right I need it is remember remember watching watching that that money money night game because I'm the oldest of 45 in here. I remember that when Howard Cosell reported that Mark David Chapman had murdered John Lennon in front of his apartment in New York. And wow, There was no social media back then. But the outpouring of great people were devastated. Devastated. Remember Princess Diana? Member seeing people lined up on Michigan Avenue. They were having some type of a memorial to her in Chicago because she had been here over at Northwestern and this one, and when Elvis that, like those three stick out in my mind, remembering those being announced Am I? Harry Carey, talking about the death of Elvis and crying. Harry and Elvis were tight. And you had John Lennon and this one. It was unbelievable. I know for those who have never heard that clip. They say. You know, Howard Cosell just can't kind is barreling in with the news. You gotta understand that Howard had no finesse. Like that voice and the the cadence. That's who he was. You would think you know, Living more somber, You know, eh, Frank? We've got some sad news, but he did the way he did it. You know if you hear the way he did, as on arrived, yes, that he comes barreling in with the news. But that's who Howard Woz, and so it actually is more jolting when he gives the news. The scheme was tied at 13, and they sent in Patriots kicker John Smith Toe win the game. This is Howard Cosell makes the announcement three seconds left. Here comes the kicker Patriots kicker John Smith to kick the game winning field goal and it was blocked. That game went into overtime in the Dolphins won it But like there's a story on ESPN dot com today that the kicker John Smith will forever be linked to this because it's like right after Howard Cosell, who's one of the most you know, notorious broadcasters of all time, announces such an event. Then millions of people watching are glued to their seats, sees this poor man have to go in there. He probably doesn't even know what's going on. But he's gets his field goal blocked, and now he's forever linked to it. Yeah, I remember watching that money and I found ball. Thank you. Monday night football. Woz, eh? It was a thing, man. It was a happening like we didn't have Game on month. Two games on Monday. Oh, Tuesday, we're gonna play. Oh, we gotta shut this. We're gonna play it on Wednesday and we got Thursday night football. We got 40,000 didn't have all that There wasn't even son in a football. No, it was Sunday afternoon. You had a late game. That would sometimes get you know you served by Heidi, right? Um, correct, but But when you didn't have that going on, it was it was money Money. Knight was the only night game going on. During that time. Money? No, it was the only time I can get that all the highlights of the week also is why Berman does it kind of been a traditional manner on my football today. You've seen the highlights a million times, but it just Berman in there. Give that gravitas of what? It was back in the day. So yes. Oh, my night football had such a such an enormous event. It was it was that for and also money that baseball for me as well, Because it is part of the brand going night football. Think of money. I'd baseball. The Tigers are playing with the lights. That's interesting. Yeah, Esso. It Z one of those things cap where When you have that kind of news now, keep in mind. They didn't break into the game, ABC News or anything else like that? It was announced right there at the game, Correct. It was strong, right? It wasn't We have to break away because we've got major news. Here's you know. What's that? Peter Jennings? No, no, no, no, no, Howard. And you know, in his ear there like you got to announce this and you've got to do it right now. Because I think it was the right decision. I mean, that was a massive massive name.

And the question that was not recorded that needs to be heard though is how many shows have we done together? We have done multiple cities. I'm trying to think of the shows. So started in Mesa, Arizona, Mesa, Arizona sold out Mesa, Arizona nice theater was yes, arts theater think was called thing. It was great people there. We're going to go back there. I don't know that we'll be back in that theater because we could have easily done two shows in that theater. Definitely. You know the story on that theater. They wanted me. They were booking me and then they decided they didn't want me because they were very liberal leaning in their politics, the venue, managers, and owners, and then they didn't. They decided they wanted me and then after we sold it out, they want me back next year and my agent in LA set. Now we got another place. We'll go to little bit yet, but we got another spot but we could have easily done a thousand seats and that that deal. We did four shows together San Diego, the American. Comedy company as a coup place? Yeah, I'm surprised we sold as many tickets as we didn't think, but those were pretty full houses on that deal. I was exhausted after that trip. I'm not a road warrior. I mean, I'm a road warrior, but just do it show after shield on the same night, the parental. I did three. This past Saturday in the same night, same night, two different clubs. Somebody who's telling me I was in somewhere in Ohio weeks. Go in somebody was telling me somebody did five shows in an afternoon in a night, and I was like, good Lord is no way they were quality, no way, no way. Can you imagine I mean, did they did they did seven shows in the weekend, and I think they said four or five and one day, but either way it was something astronaut, Michael in Ohio, at a funny bone. And I want to say it was Toledo Peres Burg's funny bone, something like that, but it was nuts. Man mean that's a lot of talking. Yeah, that's a lot of mouth running. I have a hard time and I did in San Diego. I have a hard time because. When you have to be repetitive, you do this, do a show after show, and then you're thinking who else is in this who's in here at the ten o'clock show that was in here at eight o'clock show and is here in this again, and it gets in my brain. You know what I'm saying? But I'm going to set set the set a bit is a bit you do what you do, and that's still have a hard time with that. That's what's great about live shows. No, your act is your act like my our is my our, but since it's a live show, it's not exactly the same every sink Ryan because I could get into a bit and waitress could drop a tray of drinks and something happens. Then some somebody, a drunk person in the audience, a yell, something out, and it changes the bit slightly. You gotta deal with that. So that's what's great about comedy. It's different every single time, even though it's the same show, it's different. Yeah, Spencer James was on a couple of episodes ago and we were talking about something about along those lines and and I still have to get my head wrapped around so much of that because I just haven't been doing comedy that long. And then I go into a comedy club. Which is completely different feel from doing theaters in different beats different step. We did San Jose together. That was fun. That was a comedy club. The improv there in San Jose is like a theater. Yeah, it was a theater that the improv took over it. They told us a felt exactly nineteen thousand four. I think something like that. It was built. It was built in the improv took it over many years later because that's one of the largest in the country things. Pig seats, four hundred something. Yeah, and that's the interceding. So it was a cool place, balcony and whole thing, haunted, haunted. I mean, of course, why not? I mean, every every place needs a ghost in. We saw, no, I saw no evidence..

"That something is going on on the field and howard cosell lowered danny don meredith whoever is doing it these days describes the play on the field everyone understands what would happen if all we did was broadcast the tv thing and delay the video by four second keep the audio delay the video by four seconds here's what what happened the playbyplay announced they would say jim kelly back in the pocket going to pass and then you would see jim kelly go back in the pocket and go back to pass that would be so weird right we expect that what the playbyplay does this tell us after our brains it turns out work exactly the same way dan dan it has written about this brilliantly professor tufts you can read the data then the voice in our head the one that tells us where what we are about to decide to do next says it after we have already decided it says arm sort of hungry after our body has already decided we are hungry not before we don't get to say something in that voice in her head and then do it we do it and then we make an explanation afterwards a microsecond afterward to explain it to ourselves that were not crazy right so so uncut you off traffic you lean on the horn you think that what happened was usaid to yourself that jerk i'm going to no actually you decided to hong and then you made up a whole narrative once you do that this is so freeing to understand because what it means is all the narrative is what drives me crazy.
