"So the big story in basketball is the Celtics and the Heat. I am going to make a turn on that. I'm gonna make you turn on that in a moment here, but the game last night for the Celtics. They had a 17 point lead. Kemba Walker was playing great, and then they winning at half time, and they all took a nap. And they didn't wake up until the start of the fourth quarter and the Miami Heat rallying back from 17 points down and they take a 20. Siri's lead were two wins away from the Miami Heat. Getting to the end before files. That would be the third different vintage of the Miami Heat under the Pat Riley Watch. To get to the embassy files before they got there with Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O'Neal. They got there with that. They also got to the finals with the heat ALS. They had that going on for a little while. So you had that and now you could have a third different version. Of the Miami Heat and the really dramas on the Celtic side. You had Marcus Smart, who blew a gasket after the game and ranting around. We did. A monologue on that early could download the podcast later and he was upset, angry. And he didn't play well didn't play well in the fourth quarter, and people are ripping him for that. But my point in the monologue, you go back, and here it is that that should have been Jason Tatum Brandt. He's the face of the Celtics. That's a missed opportunity by Jason Tatum. I know it's not his personality, but I gotta step it up. Alright. So, with that being said, we have another story that piqued my interest. This one involves the walls caving in on the Houston Rockets. Specifically what happened with Russell Westbrook and James hard yet we're going there. Now, if you've not heard the latest, maybe you have not. There's a lot of speculation about what Darryl more he's going to do. It was announced the other day that Daryl Morey, the Rockets general manager, will remain the Rockets general manager. He was Said to be in doubt, but he will keep his job, Daryl more so what happens now? Russell Westbrook is the most likely candidate to be traded, however. Problem. He's got The biggest albatross contract. You could possibly want the mega mega mega mega mega mega max and so Where will he go? Well, there is a new contender that has emerged here. For Russell Westbrook and really the only contender, the New York Knickerbockers. Now we're told that the Knicks are likely the on ly team. That would be possible for Westbrook because of the salary cap in the way it all works out. And are they interested? Should they be interested now? What With rockets get Well, hypothetically, they would get eventually some salary cap relieve sooner if that's a big deal, make a run it Yanis event that combo if he doesn't sign his Max Max Contract with the box, there's always a big name free agent every couple of years. Even the great Kawai Leonard, he could be yours. You can have a playoff P Would that be great? James Harden and Paul George together? Let's make that happen anyway. So Houston. They would get something like Julius Randle, Taj Gibson, Wayne Ellington. Players like that from the Nixon a draft pick or two as well. So I am a soccer I admit, I'm a sucker for a juicy rumor. I ran a rumor website for awhile Back in the day, So let us discuss the question. What are the odds? Go inside the mallards sports book. What are the odds that Russell Westbrook Ends up in new York City. So I want to set the odds at plus 2 50. And that implies a 28% can't 28% chance. So I've got arranged marriage, child development and crusader, and we will combine all these things the other now, first of all. When I saw this story my first thought was this actually makes sense and I don't like when that's my my first thought. I don't like that. So let's start with the dynamic of Russell Westbrook. And how that would go down involving Houston. They're part of the Rockets part because on the surface, this would be the perfect spot going from Houston to New York for Westbrook because the only option so upward and onward right upward and onward, but Westbrook definitely needs a fresh start. And I'm not always a fresh start guy. I think you can work these things out. We've seen it before in different situations, and there's a rush to make big trades. But in this case It was a weird science experiment. Between Westbrook and Harden. And even though they played together as young players in the N B, a in Oklahoma City Harden was a secondary guy at that time, and it It just exploded. It was an experiment in Frankenstein's lab. And the test too wet Ka boom, and it just it just blew up. Now it was painfully obvious. To anyone that paid attention that this was an arranged marriage. It was obviously the Rangers. Houston was desperate to get rid of Chris Paul, and I don't need to go through the history lesson here, but they were willing to take a flier on a very weird Dynamic because Daryl Morey, who has been tagged as the smartest man in the rope Smartest man in the room. He turned this into a total fiasco. Making one bad decision after the next and still keeping his job. Still keeping his job because his reputation is glowing, although not in China, not in China, So everything happens for a reason. Why everything I'm sory, but sometimes in life, the reason Is that your stupid.

"So going back to the discussions that we were talking about in terms of potentially dealing rustling would you do with Russia's contract? Here's an interesting thought experiment for you guys. So we talked about it and clearly the rockets. Very few assets with which to move that Westbrook. Contract there are very few contracts that are as bad as that westbrook contract. One of the assets that Houston does have. And maybe the only way I can see them moving russ before that contract has a year left on it maybe to. It is potentially packaging him with James Harden. If indeed, Marais leaves no coat know new coaches hired or found to be a good fit for competing with the the small ball mentality. If they just feel like they're trapped I mean I don't think there's actually going to happen but. I think the most likely scenario is they hire somebody like Thailand or Jeff Van. Gundy. They run it back in place mall but not as aggressively small because nobody plays small like the Tony does they basically bring back the same roster with some small marginal changes to replace guys who leave on like expiring deals that's probably the realistic scenario. But what would you guys think if they had package like if they just decided to blow it up, recoup some assets, get off the rest contract which I guess they pretty much would have to do really realistically they are GonNa Blow Up. That a move, you can see them making like I. Don't think it's i. don't even think the idea of talking about Russ getting moved is bullshit like I. Don't think we're speaking trained existence or anything I think every team in the league would be thinking about it. Yeah. The rockets. That's interesting I hadn't thought about the possibility of him being packed with harden. That's what that'd be eighty million dollars in cap moving into players like I just don't like. A, you've seen how they work together now and I guess it does work to an extent, but you have to have the roster do it. So I think who out there I mean Austin Boston the salary that could go back. I mean one one thing that I thought of when Evans said that was I mean I floated in the chat while ago hard for Ben Simmons, based trade, and maybe throw in Tobias Harris to match salary but if I was Houston, I would just keep Russ probably just because if I'm trading hard I want to. NFL. Because if you're trading harden, you're blowing it.

"I think maybe we've used some of these young guys on teams differently because they don't have the same growth curve or trajectory as some of the guys who made the bubble because it was a very a much higher level play in in the bubble then I think we all expected and you're playing as playoff teams you're playing as the better teams. I really am a I. Don't want to say nervous but I do think it'll be intriguing to see if there's any kind of gap that's more significant or pronounce between the top twenty, two teams who made the. Bubble in the bottom eight because I do wonder genuinely about how that has an impact I mean I know training camp starting up soon, I believe the Pistons just started up today the cavs startups either today or tomorrow So they'll be getting in I think three weeks of work, but that's not even comparable to the entire ramp up that these guys that were in the bubble just had so I I don't know I a lot of questions asked there unless you guys have anything on that, we can get into kind of the rockets future a little bit. Ago. Just to add on to your point, you made I about working the margins and what the rockets have had to do in terms of getting rid of guys Gary Clark Anthony Mill on the rockets are excellent working the margins mores always done a great show of it, and it's clear with the guys they've had they've had on roster and also the guys they've had to let go. But it just shows the rockets. Especially, the bucks is well to a lesser extent, Danny Larousse it all the time good ownership is the biggest competitive advantage. In the NBA if you have a cheap owner, you're gonNA run your team like a cheap team and you're going to have to make cuts. You don't really have to make. So the bucks of promise that they're gonNA pay the luxury tax going forward believe it when I see it because they had a chance to do that with Brogden and they didn't do it now the buck fighting an uphill battle. So the rockets have done that to to some extent probably worse than the X.. Smaller smaller instances but more often. So it just shows how important it is to be working for a good owner and I think we'll get it into that as we discussed, the rockets feature to. I to bring it back to a point that Mark said about how like We're getting these this film on young players in this environment where maybe defense isn't quite there are some have advantages from working out with their trainers. During the hiatus, and that is interesting how you already take out people kind of react to young players in a very volatile way. I remember there was a poll halfway through the season before the shutdown where it was like, would you rather start a franchise with John Dr in Fox or shape gilders Alexander and like. Fox was dead last like the argument was about Shea Jommuang because those were the guys that were playing well at that moment kings were kind of. Stagnating after an exciting twenty eighteen, twenty, nineteen. So when you take that existing dynamic and you apply it to, okay, we're getting some really good footage of like say porter Jr. someone like that that. Maybe. The public consensus or perception doesn't matter on these players. It's ultimately you know what the decision makers. Decide. But. It's going to kind of be an imbalance if you know the likes of like Zach Levine or Karl Anthony..

"It's GONNA be interesting. I think especially to see the start of next season you know the first couple months of next season and see which of these changes have stabilized in which haven't I personally think. Roses, roses injuries have. Done a number to him this playoff. And he just wasn't himself and he never got his rhythm never really got to practice with the team because he was sick and then he was hurt stow it sucks to see an experiment that I thought was so promising and so insightful and unique kind of fizzle out in this way, and although Dantonio, seems to be moving on at this point. I would have really liked to see what fertility did if de Antoni was. Adamant about staying one more year and run it back under. Guess more predictable conditions whether for would've brought back on and how the roster would have done under him because Marie has done a great job on the margins with this roster, but they've had to do so much work on the margins given the mistakes made in the past and given that hardened C. P. Three I guess pretty much couldn't play together. They had a trade and shoot for the stars one time, and now they're just I mean they're so far gone having to work the margins that at this point what's left on the margins that makes them a contender yeah. I think that's a really great point I. Think I've two things off that all hit my first one Especially, speaking on the margins I, mean you look at they just had nobody who could contain Lebron James and obviously Covington is a great help defender, but there's nobody one on one. WHO's really You're not stocking Bron James, but you get my point just having useful MBA bodies on that roster would have done numbers and you look at just in the past two years two three years. Having to cut costs and cut guys or trade away guys like Gary Clark the Anthony, mountain? I mean they were both on the roster Hindsight's twenty, twenty Those things happen for reasons in maybe other things don't happen if they don't get caught. But at the same time, you just look at that and the way that their owners claws than to to. To do business and. Conducting business on the margins is that much tougher and you just look at obviously I don't think you have both those guys on the roster with some of the other guys on the roster but. You get what I'm saying if you can. If you have nine guys who you can rely on her eight guys, you can rely on instead of like six and a half five and a half I mean Houston really just could not rely on anyone consistent we. Outside of James Harden. That's something I really look at. And then also speaking to your point is well I really wonder how this time off and also conversely the time on the time guys had the bubble in this high environment high play environment You look at conversely team like the Bulls. You love. I really am interested. To see how this impacts, those eight teams not just for this season but moving forward..
The Return of Playoff Rondo
"So Bill Game One against Houston was Rozan rondos first game nearly six months. Can you break down everything that he went through with injuries? Yeah. It was interesting because this is a guy who has been slowly it feels like kind of breaking down as he's gotten older he had two broken fingers on his right hand last year his first year with the Lakers. This year he had a calf injury. He had an aversion fracture in his right ring finger and this is all before we get to March and the shutdown from the pandemic. So the Lakers are off for four months they go to. ORLANDO. Rajon Rondo is with the team their first practice inside the bubble Lakers guard Rajon Rondo has suffered a broken right thumb in. He's expected to return to full basketball activities in six to eight weeks, he's going to undergo surgery to repair the fact fracture this week. So he leaves the bubble has surgery. He's out for another six weeks or so the Lakers have a first round series against the Blazers Rondo, comes back to the bubble and is actually cleared to play for game three against the Portland Trailblazers, he's on the court getting ready. For that Game Rondo was listed as active tonight for the Lakers but was a late scratch with back spasms that happened. So, by the time, we got to game one of the second round against the rockets. There was kind of this sense of porcelain Rondo forget about it what level, but is he just going to be healthy enough to play and be able to stay healthy to make a contribution to this team? What does he had to say about all of these injuries he basically downplayed the injuries and said that these are the sorts of things that are going to frustrate. Anyone was very frustrating injury and step back I'm my career fourteen years have. Everything happens for a reason. Obsolete man says talks we. Still for the moment but the timing of this latest injury, the broken thumb and the back spasms I think particularly frustrating for him because this is a guy whose entire reputation and career is built on playoff performance on being a guy who really ramps it up in the postseason. Early, in his career uses a second your point guard with the Celtics out of Kentucky playing with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and Paul. Pierce and he ended up playing an instrumental role. You remember the two thousand, eight finals against the Lakers decisive blowout game. You know he had twenty one points against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers twenty one point seven rebounds eight assists six steals to give the Celtics a championship for that story franchises nearly ovation barrage. You've seen it win Lebron was in Miami. If you remember game three of these conference semi finals Rondo dislocated his elbow. Oh. Wow. Left arm hyper-extended boy. Didn't see it on that I replay certainly. Saw It there. When back to the locker room pop back in came back onto the court to help the Celtics with game. Time is pad. Rajon Rondo expired the crowd rare Boston. We've seen it time and time again in his career in these big moments, it's not superhuman. But when you take a player who is seen as a high level, but not superstar player can a hitting that superstar switch when the playoffs come then obviously a legend starts to grow. And for him did have another injury right when the Lakers were expecting to get him at his best was extremely frustrating. But the timing actually ended up working out he made it back for the second round series against the rockets and as we've seen was really no worse for the wear the Lakers got blown out by the rockets in game one. They're all going to be in a good mood tonight as the Houston Rockets when it one twelve to ninety seven. But after that, they rattled off four straight wins how much credit do you think Rondo deserves further taking that series. So easily I think you could make an argument that without Rajon Rondo certainly that the Lakers wouldn't have off the next four wins, but he was instrumental in games two and three and four also, but specifically games two and three with his performance in the fourth quarter game too. He knocked down a late jump shot to kind of hold off the rockets and what was a close game Rondo two. Point jump shot that's Rajon Rondo with a bucket right there ten points nine assists for Rondo and then engaged three. He was actually the guy who is Lebron James on the bench to start the fourth quarter in what was a close game at the start of that period he either scored or assisted on Lakers I eight possessions of that quarter to help kind of turn what had been another tight close game into a rout for the Lakers. Rondo. He'll three and Rondo hits another one largest laker lead tonight Rondo has. Been Spectacular and a nice Lee for Kuzma. This is sort of how his reputation has been built. But this also is kind of out of line with the way he's played for the Lakers over his first two years. He hasn't been the guy who has come up in the big moments or been clutch. You've seen the decline of a player who's in his mid thirties and has been in the League for fourteen years, but there has always been this belief from the Lakers that when the playoffs come that he. Would step up and have those sort of vintage Rondo performances and so what you saw was sort of this return to form that the Lakers have always promised would be there and you saw not only offensively. But also defensively when Houston started to make runs, it was Rajon Rondo who was picking up James Harden full court and pestering him into turnovers they double team Arden and get a steal and another round of bucket. That's a ten old laker run hard was trying to go behind the back Rondo was right there. In both game two in game three second-half possessions where rondos picking up James Harden. The former MVP of the league, hounding him into a turnover, taking his pocket and going the other way for layup that completely shifted momentum and those both are Lakers win. So when you look at what Rondo did in those two games, I, think you could easily say that the Lakers could have been down two. Oh, two one in the series instead of kind of romping to a five game series victory.

"It was somebody who can help develop young players who can communicate who had a high basketball IQ who had high character intelligent I think Jeff Hornicek. Checked all those boxes. You know we we talked the other guys who have been head coaches in the League we. Talk to Brad Stevens, before we got the Celtics Job Billy Donovan when he was at Florida and. Fred Hoiberg was that I was state at the time, and then I'm trying to think well, J. B. Bickerstaff who was interim head coach in Houston. Now, it's got the permanent job in Cleveland. So we cast a relatively wide net Howard, Hornicek stood out to us throughout the process and I think that's what you have to do. But again, it is different based on where you're franchises and the timeline, and that's why I think for the Houston Rockets that we've been discussing. I'd be very surprised. If they went with somebody other than a veteran experienced head coach who has wanted a high level. I look at guys like Jeff Van. Gundy maybe tyron Lou guys who have been there and done that who can get that team across the finish line I. Think what they need is different than what the Chicago Bulls are. New Orleans Pelicans are looking for you know for sure for sure and then there you know there are a couple of guys who might fit in a couple of different places. I could see like Kenny Atkinson we know has the development reputation. I could see him being great with the Chicago Bulls a young team that kind of needs somebody to kind of. Nudge them along through these these earlier stages. But at the same time you know I I think Kenny now having had the nets experience under his belt if you send them into like the Pacers who already a playoff team or you know the thunder who We don't know where the underpinning to at this point but but I think there's some guys who fit multiple but tell me about. Again to the extent that you're comfortable doing it. What was the process like when you brought in coaching candidates whether they were longtime assistance whether they were experienced? College coaches, whatever what are you asking in an interview with a coach I think anytime you make a change or you're thinking about making a change Howard. Have to be prepared organizationally as far as okay. If we do move on from a head coach if we decide to fire him or as is the case in, okay. See with Billy Donovan and now in Houston with Mike Dan. Tony. Those guys contracts expire and the choice is at least somewhat mutual. You know they leave the organization where do we go from here? So I think everyone agree. Good executive officer has a shortlist of guys and basically what you do Howard I guess depends on Do you already have somebody in mind and are you confident? You can get that guy right now bring up a team that we've discussed the Indiana Pacers we've heard rumbling for awhile now probably almost a year as soon as the negotiations with Mike, Dantonio and Houston Rockets broke down a year ago. Are we kind of heard that NATE MCMILLAN MAY BE IN TROUBLE IN INDIANA? It's one of those things I think doing what you and I do. It's hard to believe because I think, nate. Did an excellent job in Indiana for sure enough. You know they they move on from nate and all of a sudden Mike Dantonio is available and We'll see if that's where where it ends up. So I bring it up because you know the Pacers may have him in mind maybe he's one in a obviously they need some kind of backup plan incase that doesn't work out but generally speaking you have a different tiers like a list B. List see list. Let's start at the top. Let's start with a list. Here of the guys we like how do we find out if they are interested in us? Do Most of the guys pretty much all of them Howard is you know have agents at this point usually the process starts there you call a a warranty. Gary Cooper Spencer Breaker ca those guys like you know we're GonNa Coach coaching search here. The guys we like. What is Kenny? Atkinson's interest level what is tyron. Lou. Want to do you know what what is Emilio have in mind if he's going to be a head coach for the first time and then you gauge interests that way and then as a front office you go back to the owner and say look we reached out to you know we had five guys on our list maybe one or two of them is not the right time or Not the right fit or they want to continue broadcasting whatever it is. But here are the three guys that we have. It'd be great. You know you might rank them in some order, but let's start the process here and usually initially our those are with phone conversations I haven't done a coaching search in the era luckily, but maybe maybe zoom or skype you know at this point and and just kind of get to know you feeling out process. It may be broader than that some organizations. Let's. Let's not prioritize three to five guys. Let's talk to ten or twelve guys I. Think you're seeing that with the list. I've seen from Indiana Chicago in particular Let's cast a wide net. Let's talk to all of them and then see who emerges. But at some point, our weather's the final five three or maybe even just the final one you put that guy in front of the owner or ownership group in. This is a guy. Now he needs to work well with you owner X. What this is the guy that I like or the woman I should say that we live in order to be a head coach. Let's you guys have a conversation. I would recommend hiring this individual if you guys are comfortable. So that's kind of how it goes. It can start as broad or narrow as you want it what at the end of the day it's usually in person obviously for the pandemic The potential head coaching candidate, and the owner and the GM sitting down in a room and discussing how everything will work in detail. How Specific Do you get when coaching candidates is sitting again in front of you in the old days maybe in front of Zoom Camera. Now. Do you do you actually go to to the level of of asking. Listen If you if you were coaching this Russia tomorrow what kind of stuff are you running offensively defensively? Is it going to be the same things you were doing your job your previous job if they were already a head coach, you know how how how detailed do you get there to figure out whether they're the right fit? Yeah. Great Question Howard I. Think It depends on the coach and how recently he or she has or hasn't been a head coach and their experience level right? I think for example, if you are interviewing Mark Dantonio for job I think we kind of know what Mike brings you know with his offensive expertise with the fact that. He's going to be very creative and innovative offensively, and if you look at strengths and weaknesses, he's super experienced now with coaching, what I four t NBA teams, Phoenix Lakers, and now the rockets. So I think there are more answers there than questions, but I bring it up because obviously if you're interviewing an assistant coach, he's never been a head coach You don't want to assume that whatever head coach she's working for at the time or has worked for in the past that he's going to do the exact same thing that was one of the things that stood out going back to Jeff. Hornacek. When you interviewed him with the sons in in two thousand thirteen, I think a lot of people would assume. Because with Jeff Robson a terrific player they associated with the Utah Jazz I think first and foremost with Jerry Sloan being the third best player on those teams with John Stockton and Carl Malone you know we brought him in say I I respect a lot of things. He did I. Learned a lot from him and we'll integrate some of that. But more I want to play more like cotton, Simpson, industry, and Sunday UPTEMPO push the pace push the tempo. Jeff has never been a head coach so it's not like you had you know Mike..

"Fired based on winning and losing and and they're not as good in my opinion, and that's the challenge. So that combined with the four outgoing picks and pick swaps on the lack of financial flexibility. There's there's no easy answer also keep in mind Howard that some of the guys who played well on the roster like Jeff Green like even Austin rivers their markets going to appreciate. They're probably not just minimum players anymore. It's not like they're just gonNa take the minimum and come back. There's probably a better. Offer out there for them we'll see where the cop comes in and all that, but they play well enough to drum up some kind of market. So you been out your depth and looking at their ages, their top three guys hardened Westbrook and Gordon or thirty one PJ Tucker is played a phenomenal role for them. We PJ in Phoenix when was GM there one of my? Favorite players of all time. Howard but he is thirty five years old and the youngest rotation player in the bubble was Daniel House junior who we also had phoenix he is twenty-seven. He got kicked out of the bubble. So they don't have young players in the pipeline. They don't have draft picks they don't have financial flexibility and what does that point you toward an executive well that Points you toward the trade market, but they also have limited trade assets given deals. They've done prior to this day deadline. There's a camp of people out there who will look at this and say, you know what they've got enough talent there. They could do better. They just need a different philosophy they need to deploy harden and Westbrook differently. So maybe a new coaches, the answer I. Don't believe that myself and I also think that whoever comes in frankly you know hard and has so much control. I, think it's GonNa really hard for someone to come in and just say we're doing it a completely different way in James. You will your your usage rate has to ratchet down by ten or fifteen point like that's not going to happen I don't think but maybe. Is there. Is there anybody out there in coaching free agency that you think you know what if they just played a little differently if they could adapt Or evolve their style or maybe it's just a different voice whatever it may be connect coach fix this I don't think coaching was the issue there. Our I think Mike Dantonio did an incredible job with the Houston Rockets. With all the changes with Cappella going out with Chris Paul going out with Westbrook coming in Now, I think he did a really good job as you know, he's one of the most creative and innovative offensive coke in the recent history of our league. So frankly speaking I don't know what they could do other than maybe run more they could play a little bit faster I thought that would be the biggest change when Westbrook came in for Chris Paul as Chris Paul is a pick and roll savant. He's one of the best in the history of the League Westbrook is a dynamic athlete who's great in transition what the challenge there Howard from an executive standpoint is in order to run you need to to rebound and you need to get stops. It's hard to run taking the ball out of the net. You know that rarely happens off a made basket in. HOUSTON. One of the weaknesses that showed up at some inopportune times especially against a big athletic Lakers team is they were beaten up on the glass on the boards with a Super Small Ball lineup I love the shooting and spacing offensively frankly with with the Antoni system. I wouldn't change a whole lot with PJ Tucker and those guys holding the corners and the space in the middle of the floor for Westbrook in particular I. Liked that a lot especially when the ball is popping and moving around but defensively Howard I don't know what you do as far as how did he get better rebounding? How do you get better as far as rim protection because if you don't have that, you have to be so good on the perimeter which takes an incredible amount of effort sliding fee taking charge is not allowing the perimeter to be breached so. To speak by penetrating offensive guard that really causes a defensive team to expend a lot of energy and frankly speaking at their age I don't know if that's a good formula for the rockets to ask Harden and Westbrook and Gordon those guys to do that especially over the course of eighty two games and then try to do it again in the playoffs without a big time rebound rim-protector behind them to clean up their mistakes. So at a minimum, should they be reassessing the doubling down on small ball I mean is there because I feel like the best teams can do. Can Pivot between a couple of different styles over the course of a game, and even when the warriors went to the death lineup that was a team initially that had bogut in the middle and he served a certain purpose in in in starting games for them and they they could play both ways and they could go to death death lineup when they had to. But they didn't play one hundred percent of the time that way. To the rockets need to kind of reverse course on that one, not to necessarily go traditional and big. But just to have the option within a game or a series to toggle between look at the five remaining teams. As we sit here, recording this on Monday afternoon awaiting game one between Boston and Miami game seven between the La Clippers and the Denver Nuggets I think those five teams, our four I mentioned and the La Lakers. They have more versatility in different ways to beat you than the Houston Rockets do and what do I mean by that? Well, look at the depth you know with Miami in particular probably the lowest seeded team still remaining, they come off the bench with very good players they got dala Kelly Olympic other two young shooters in particular Dunkin Robertson. Starts. Tyler. Comes off the bench they have. A lot of versatility different ways to beat you offensively and defensively I. Think you could say the same thing about the Boston. Celtics with their talent and depth our they have a bunch of different weapons and then some even unknown around Herald guys like Daniel Thais, Robert Williams, and even grant Williams late in game seven stepped up and then I'd say the same thing about the two teams..

Houston Rockets fail to stave-off elimination in loss to the Los Angeles Lakers
"So, there's a whole list of ways to For a whole host of the culprits here. Right IF PEOPLE WANNA start scapegoating or pointing fingers at the reason for the rockets. Quick Demise. This postseason I might point to James Harden just say they're fundamentally flawed because of the the style that he plays and how how hardened centric they are that I will always key on that. Anthony Davis and LeBron James propel Los Angeles Lakers to Game 4 win over Houston Rockets
"It on the night where you had in any playoff game, which was a must win game for the Los Angeles Lakers, I know there are two games the one I know this sounds silly, but the Clippers already have three games to one of the Denver Nuggets. If you're the Los Angeles Lakers you could ill afford. To be in a knockdown, drag out battle with the Houston Rockets, and they went out there and they just took this soul away early, late and often, Rondo one on one against Jeff Green. Now they get a tan Thony Davis. Top of the key you go. Davis, with their Gordon on, Davis turns leans, shoots ahead. Rondo Rondo, running at the basket Alley Oop slam dunk a little risky. Through an alley oop off the backboard, and LeBron almost didn't see it, but he caught it in late and dunked it likely. I'll say What Plato find LeBron no doubt about that. Report: NBA investigating possible bubble violation by Houston Rockets forward Danuel House
"Last night, Game three Lakers and the Rockets. The Lakers win their up to one. The Rockets don't feel good about going into game for the way they got beat in the last couple of games, and the Rockets played last night without Daniel House, who was there? Six man, one of the better players won the better Six men in the MBA. Hey, didn't play the guy averages about 11 points a game and it's not like you're missing Lou Williams or my tray zero but still He's an important cog for the Houston Rockets. Why did he not play well, according to report tonight, Agent Ward Djurovski reporting this his status for the rest of the Western Conference semifinals in jeopardy as the N BA probes potential violation of campus protocol. House is denied any violation on the matter of him. Hey, I didn't violate protocol and go and leave campus. He didn't go and leave campus. That's one thing, but he may have violated protocol. And now the N B. A is talking to the league. Talking with each other on whether or not he's going to be able to play the rest of this series. Does he have to go into a 10 Day quarantine period for this violation? This is Daniel House who did something and violated the bubble rules of Self isolation and being smart about covert
LeBron James Has Another Block Party Against Rockets
"Breaking news, this morning scale, and it is good news especially if you're a Houston Rockets Fan. Robert Covington had that's scary fall last night where he was pushed by cow cruised into the hip of Anthony Davis. He was bleeding from his mouth. He was down on the court. The good news scall- is he he's not in the concussion protocol obviously I imagine he's a bit sore this morning, but it looks like he'll be ready to for game four tomorrow night. Yeah. I'm actually really looking forward to game four because Houston Rockets do some things well, Russell Westbrook finding his rhythm attacking the basket I. We said this on the mini pod. I think the. Houston Rockets should be a little optimistic about this. If we all understand that if Lebron's plays like this or even Bronco plays like this liquors are going to be tough to be s for anybody that's the that's including the clippers including Miami or Boston or Toronto whoever that is vintage Lebron. The question is, can he sustain that and it's his age that's going to be tough but the Houston Rockets they found some things they got to figure out their defense but offensively, I think they have a magic formula that could beat the Lakers if they make some shots and move the ball better. I think. So as well the Lakers won the game last night behind a classic Lebron James Performance Lebron had thirty six points, seven rebounds, five assists. He also had four blocks Gal and that's the amazing thing to me. It's not that he's big. He's strong. He's smart. We know that you know you WanNa iron people who just blow up Lebron for any little thing he does on what scale to me in your. Seventeen at thirty five years old with as many games as he's played the athleticism that he still has that lobby last night from Alex, Caruso with a one-handed dunks look to me like he was well above the square on that, and then the timing on the chase down walks that is certainly impressive and it's also certainly unique for a guy in his mid thirties who's played as many minutes as Lebron James says. Yeah, and typically. Data old you all the answers you've seen every defense you're not overwhelmed by anything. Your body is sort of started to give out I I'm not. He's not where he was when he was in Miami way back wind there's a lot of miles on that, but he his his ten percent drop off or whatever you WANNA call it fifteen percent drop off is. You you can't see it because the other stuff that he does he still has the great passing game is came lot easier to him now than it did before I think he could conserve his energy a whole lot better than he did back in the day. I, don't think he has to expend as much because he's a lot smarter on the floor and he. Relies on guys like Anthony Davis but I. I'm always impressed when the broncos into like old the Bron- mode. I just I. I kind of sometimes forget that he's able to do that and I know it always happens but I just use the seventeen years in your thirty five years old. You shouldn't be able to recover just one day in between and get out there and have that performance. So once again I think you know using father time as the thing that's most undefeated. Can he be great again in game four Kenny be great. Again in game five I don't know those answers, but whatever he's doing is absolutely working.
James Harden Drops 36 as Houston Rockets Beat LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1
"Made the Lakers won 12 to 97 James Harden happy with his 36 points. Given the team under 100 points a tradition, you know, so we got even better game is gonna be a lot of just adjustments. LeBron: 'We got a feel for' Rockets' speed in loss
"We went to break we spent some time talking about the Los Angeles Lakers and their loss tonight. The Houston Rockets wiped them out 1 12 to 97. The Lakers have only played two games in the past 11 days. The Houston Rockets they play two days ago. James Harden wakes up on offense has 36 points. Our Gordon 23 Russell Westbrook. 24 points. He led the rockets and curse words. OK. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers, they look like the Lakers from Game one against Portland. LeBron has 28 rebounds, seven assists. Anthony Davis 25 points, 14 rebounds and in Alex Caruso, the next high score 14 points That's not going to get the job done. A matter of fact. LeBron James. He had some reasons as to why the Lakers lost this game one. Listen, So what LeBron had to say? I think it's speed on play. What? Ah, a lot of speed, obviously starting with the head of the snake and rust. They put a lot of speed Oval Office, Lee and defensively. And you can watch it on film. You can see it on film. Until you get out there. You get a feel for on. That's what we did tonight. We've got a feel for their speed. We got a feel for their speed. Okay, We've had some callers who called me up and said, Oh, well, LeBron is just feeling amount made it sound like, you know, he's just trying to see what goes on. Oh, yeah, They haven't played a lot. What do you want Name trying to give no game up. This guy's trying to play to win. And yet now they'll adjust and we'll see what happens game too. I don't think it'll be the same result. And we had a caller before we went to break Who said, you know, LeBron starting five years old. We know he's a freak of nature, but he's probably pacing himself. No Ah! He was pacing himself by the time he got in the bubble. We saw how bad the Lakers looked. What is he going to do? Pace himself all the way to the end behind ALS? I don't think that's the case. Come on. I was a competitive basketball player at the highest level one of the greatest of all time. Everybody has to pace themselves, but LeBron James played 37 minutes tonight. I'm not goingto say that he's just out there going through the motions just to see what happens and know that. Oh, well, if we play weaken, you know I can conserve some energy. No. That's not going to get you to the finals. It's not happening.

J.B. Bickerstaff on the NBA Strike and Racial Justice
"Us today is the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Also, the greatest interim head coach and the history of basketball. He is now three for three. With the Houston Rockets, the Memphis Grizzlies at now the Cleveland Cavaliers interim turned head coach J., B. Bickerstaff. Thanks for coming on with us. Man I appreciate it I guess that's an honor to say. Then the greatest coach of all time but I appreciate you having me man. Looking forward to the conversation so. What were you thinking last night as the Milwaukee, bucks don't take the floor and it becomes a reality that. There's not going to be a playoff game and then we see the way it plays out through the evening. We saw your tweets couple of them went viral by the way Jay bickerstaff on twitter. Now love that but you really some poignant words to say and so I just take me through your day and experiencing that somebody in the NBA. You know they did a good job of keeping their thoughts to themselves and it was really a surprise. You know normally something like that is GonNa get out you know but they did a great job of keeping it to themselves organizing it in making it a powerful statement You know I can't speak enough about the power of their voices and what it means to communities and people all over the world and all of our country for sure So you know it's a powerful statement and that's what people don't what some people don't want to give credit where credit is due Did, not know the outcome of what was going to happen. You. Know they didn't know what their sacrifice could possibly lead to as far as repercussions from the League or from TV ESPN fans whatever it may been, but they still had the courage to do it. And that says a lot. It says how important it is to and how important it should be to all of us. What do you think? How do you think you would have handled it because to hear it coaches were still getting ready for that game players really kind of did this on their own in the locker room and it's within an hour of game. and. So I'm sure you can attempt to relate to the coaches and kind of what was going on. If you put yourself in that position, how do you think would have played out because I can only match the stress of Getting Ready for a playoff game is is something already and then you walk in and your player said, we're not playing tonight. And I think the first thing is you show support this isn't something has popped out of the Blue I'm sure that there have been a ton of conversations with bud in his guys about the circumstances he's got some very powerful guys and you saw what George Hill Janas. Had to say how it's impacted them. In, affected down extremely difficult way. So I'm sure they've had some conversations. But in that moment you show support you know you ask questions. You help guide or whatever the plan may be but you're there as a resource, a tool because again, you're not getting in the way of. Two, powerful a moment. It means too much a this time in our society what's going on? So you're there as a resource a shoulder to lean on if they need it. It seems to me that minor standing from talking to players and coaches and exects. Slow last day is that it is clear that the bubbles as a success in terms of quality of play in terms of health and safety. But a lot of people fail that it's been a failure on the league's part in terms of capitalizing the fact that everybody's there twenty two teams started there now thirteen remaining and it's been a failure to creatively find ways to take advantage of this platform. I mean. To me yesterday that Jaylen Brown tweets out that he wants to leave to go protests and the feeling is that he should be able to make more of an impact being from the bubble and utilizing that platform and player seemed to be a frustrated with the fact that they can't creatively use that platform right now and it seems to me like everything that happened yesterday is just the players taking that into their own hands to accelerate this. And I think that's what the players do. Right I think when all these things happen and you know the players lead nothing best. What's the most fantastic part of this is you know we are looking for voices in our society to push us over No human being has more influence or larger platforms than are NBA players. So we expect them and we're depending on them to lead us. They're leading US where our so called leaders have failed us. They're trying to pull us all together and it's for the right reasons. You know what? I mean this isn't a selfish caused. This isn't a divisive 'cause of this is a cause for equality and humanity of everybody should be able to get on board with and we need their voices in their platform. And we'll follow suit.

Orlando Magic's Jonathan Isaac explains why he didn't take knee or wear Black Lives Matter shirt Friday
"We had an incredible opening weekend of games name a star level player that player delivered at least once if not twice over the first three or four nights of the NBA's restart here in Orlando, we had crazy comeback wins. By the Houston Rockets, we had a dominant performance by. Jaanus over some little pesky pip squeak team from New England I forget who they might be. We got Marcus smart got fined for trying to work the officials. We've got storylines upon story lines. The clippers bounce back from their loss to the Lakers. Looking excellent and just throttling the New Orleans Pelicans. There's so many different directions that we can go Michael that I decided. Here's what we're GONNA do opening weekend heaters we're GONNA have just open ended questions are we're going to ping pong back and forth you give me your answers I'm going to give you my answers to these questions and try to cover as much ground as possible before we get there though I do want to double back quickly on the national anthem demonstrations that we touched on last episode, we got so many thoughtful emails from various members of the open floor globe on this subject, but I think there was a major development after we spoke on Friday. and. That involve Jonathan Isaac Meyers. Leonard Gregg Popovich Becky Hammon and one of the NBA referees all deciding to not kneel to not really participate in what had been in unified demonstration on Thursday. All of those people who chose to stand were obviously doing it on principle and they were doing it knowing there was going to be a lot of attention their direction. Now, if you look at Popovich amend the referee essentially, they were trying to just say, Hey, I support the the Social Justice Movement it's it's a private or personal decision for the referee said look I it's important to me to stand Meyers Leonard made a similar comment. Essentially. Saying that his brothers military service in the in the military service of close people in his life led him to WanNa stand to salute the flag. But within Isaac was a slightly different case and he actually used this entire demonstration opportunity to almost have a one man demonstration of his own. In his belief, the idea of the black lives matters movement quote unquote doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. He also said that you know we shouldn't be necessarily judging things solely based on skin color that we should be trying to live a life basically you know in God's mold and try to live up to his standard, and that Jesus Christ was his personal savior and and that he wanted everyone to focus on that. Aspect of of living rather than the particular issue that was being brought forward with the black lives matter movement by the players he didn't really get any major pushback. Within the NBA Community people respected his right to make a stand. He actually not only did he stand during the national anthem? He didn't wear a black lives matter t shirt which many people notice because he was essentially the only player not to do that his whole personal story Michael took a crazy twist over the weekend and sad twist when he wound up tearing his ACL injury that's going to end his time here in Orlando obviously but also could cost him all of next season. So now talk about a whirlwind seventy, two hours for player who generated millions of us with his comments about the protests. I'm curious. Let's start with Jonathan Isaac. What did you make of his decision? After we've seen things settle in the last couple of days You know maybe it doesn't seem quite as Eye Opening as it did at that moment, but I'll admit I was I was surprised to see given the buy in from everybody on opening night. Right, I mean I just WanNa Start and say that it it really really is a bummer to see anyone get injured but particularly is ICK who was already on restriction he was already playing with a humongous brace on his leg from a previous injury that cost him a majority of this regular season before it was suspended. So I just I feel for him greatly. I I think generally speaking. The coverage of who stands in who sits I mean we talked about this heading in anticipated it I. Think I think the coverage is generally besides the point and it doesn't really get the point I feel like people are using. This as an opportunity to shame those who are standing in a little bit I mean Meyers Leonard. said, he couldn't sleep before he made the decision to stand and that's just like not. The whole focus or the point here right like. You can obviously Support Black lives and also stand for the national anthem. It is a symbolic gesture that is what it is in the case of Isaac. I really had a difficult time understanding even what his message was until you interpreted it the way that you did I mean I watched the clip of Him Multiple Times survey there I'm GonNa just GonNa read what he said I and then we can use that as a jumping off point because I don't WanNa torture what he said earlier and I might have done that. So sorry for that. He says quote absolutely I believe that black lives matter kneeling while wearing a black lives matter t shirt doesn't go hand in hand with supporting black lives. I. Don't think kneeling or putting on a T. shirt for me personally is the answer i. Feel like for me, black lives are supported through the Gospel. All lives are supported through the Gospel. We all have things that we do wrong. Sometimes, it gets into a place of pointing fingers. We all fall short of God's glory whoever will humble themselves and seek God and repent of their sins. We can see our mistakes and people's mistakes and evil in a different light. Racism isn't the only thing that flags our society, our nation and our world, and he basically said he wanted this conversation to get out of the realm of skin color because the answer to all of our problems in everything that goes on in our world is Jesus. So. when I watched the clip. I'll I'll be honest. I was a little confused where he was going to after typing it all out trying to marinate on what he was saying I think he essentially wanted to have a demonstration on behalf of his religious beliefs and that this was an opportunity for him to say look you know focusing only on one particular group I. Guess in his view, the black lives matter group and you know everybody wearing a t-shirt doesn't necessarily achieve the wider goal which would be presumably healthy living. You know honest living you know Living which to him as a higher priority I think that's where he was going with his statements.

"Don't start going to be able to keep getting better and better over time so he just needed to get started as opinion and of course that discussion. They have gotten started. 'cause that discussion is happening. And maybe it's been tabled for the moment and they don't know the exact form and then you had to be revenue neutral at minimum for the owners to be supportive and we're not there yet. So they're gonNA they're still owners but even on the revenue side. I think we should be willing to take some risk on the downside to maybe reach a greater place in the future. Like having it'd be so it has to be guaranteed that there's no drop I think is a little myopic because we might have a drop coming in the future. If we don't we don't start down the game. Doing nothing might be the worst of all the in terms of making sure we keep fans and you know and so yeah. We have mid season tournament. That doesn't work. Maybe we integrated tournament into the schedule. There's a whole bunch of different ways or Bill Simmons playing games of the whatever they might WanNa do like all these things we should. We need to get started and not kill the like on Day One and just say oh terrible I like it seemed like the NBA was coming out with some innovative stuff. Terrible idea and then like okay. So we're just GONNA did nothing now that that MC to me that makes no sense so it will be which I think is what you're kind of saying maybe takes a step back revenue wise to take three steps forward because the new thing initially might not be revenue neutral. But Oh wow. That really caught on and people loved it analysis. There's a boom. They're coming out of high step back. I'm saying like maybe there's a setback like we'll just to have it be guaranteed. We'll never go down to reach a greater place constrains imagination of what the NBA might come up with. But it's hard I mean these things. It's hard these things are entrenched in our in our own psyches and in the leagues DNA. In it's been that way for forever problems. It's human nature to hate problems. "Daughter at staples center had to tip off with the Houston Rockets then a like many of the NBA players who were inside staples he was wearing sunglasses dark sunglasses and I was very emotional same thing with Russell Westbrook who was there but did not play at it in and so did not play on Monday evening and so that that that type of a motion is hard to shed eat in a couple hours in a plane flight even though it's been a month since Kobe died and even though it's been a month of of trying to process in the tribute as we talked about on Sunday night into Monday morning here on the show this was going to bring it right back into the forefront it certainly did it tough feels heavy even for for for me I didn't know Kobe personally I've only watched from afar for the course of his career and then thing the little bits that we did it once he retired from the game but I've really enjoyed hearing the stories from people who kind of give us a peek behind the curtain of who he was away from the spotlight yeah I really love this story from Vanessa Bryant where she she was talking about how he always knew where she was late to a game and so she would sneak in during the first quarter should walk to receive during the first quarter but if she wasn't there Kobe would start asking the security guard you know where is she and does it have you seen she around and I guess at times he would be but I don't think she said he texted her but that he would ask her when she got there where were you and he and she would respond and say relax Babe you're not gonna score eighty one the first ten minutes of the game so you could see they were a good match for one another considering that she had the sarcasm and the fire to to get right back to him the after hours with Amy Lawrence here on CBS sports radio thanks again for sharing your tweets A. already and also your posts on Facebook after hours with Amy Lawrence into the says that was emotional especially Michael Jordan speech and funny when Shaq made his speech yeah I've I believe it was a good mix exactly what you would want if your life was to be remembered I guess I shouldn't be for you all speak for me he I would want my life to be remembered in a way that was impactful to be sure and I would want people to be sorry that I was gone but you also want people to remember the positive things about your life and the way that you have the way that you gave what you had to make the people around you happier and and more of Phil but also the way that you took the skills the talents and abilities that you had and you impacted whether be people or circumstances when you had the opportunities and so yeah I started to talk about me and I that turned into a year ago but you know what I mean the idea that that we can have such an impact we don't always get to know and and that was something that I really thought about as I was listening to the speeches and and watching the reactions inside staples center we don't always get to know where we impact people but it doesn't mean it's not making a difference sometimes we have no idea what a kind word or encouragement or I help when someone needed or is in trouble even if it's a stranger we don't always know what the impression that makes on people around us and so I hope that Kobe new at least part of the impact he made in the basketball community but more importantly outside of it and it made me want to let those people know in my life who impacted me that they that they have that they made a difference that they've influenced me I in some way that I won't forget so that was the some inspiration that I took away from from what I saw on Monday its after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio rocket radio network and then James harden after the game our phone.

Listen everybody so like you clearly get the year now that's not everybody doing like aliases and stuff because you can I mean think about the past that you don't use anymore that you could share these are these are always amusing not even the Ben Admin Yeah I guess Nice of them but every so often the the hotel staff will get mixed up and so I get that Shaq's was I probably still have tucked one of those away somewhere I'm still not going to share them it into tonight but I won fifty nine to one fifty eight in regulation like the kind of like it was that many points and it's so weird because you're like seventy one seventy or something like okay slop points are we gave them a lot ahead to be looking at the score but didn't like that in regulation like as the game was going as Kerr's look at it but it it it's so you didn't you guys excuse all the defensive efficiency but is are you at all alarmed we just they they did miss they really didn't like it's Memphis him issues in everything grant browser really good player but he got rolling in like as as it happens there was a phone one to watch too and you were saying before we start recording the atmosphere was great there which I will the I mean I I gotta ask you scored the go ahead free throws excuse me know that there's last year I must say I was a foul in class 'cause I really try to hold the rest of the points of emphasis yes the jump into my spare space arm placement that that was one of those ones in a gray area and washing it from different angles it was a foul everyone's so being in the moment who really it looks like maybe hips knees something rushed on Toya shot off yeah oh filing started make the shot yeah oh call where we doing now because I didn't make contact he's in my space now as interesting I'm just glad we came on on top of the game that would I might call it what you seeing so far what what has stood out to you in terms but goodrich like what are you seeing in the way that those two are figuring this I think anytime you have two guys that are both in the apiece oh I always say well you get guys like that the really care about each other off the court I think he really has his bag like he's like you know the friendship and I think that takes over Wherever you want to do that just let me know you can just do anytime like he's happy he's in the transitions with easy it shows I I it really does and then there's different oh most win watched when the beetle obviously they've known each other neither of them had been forty percents usage guys back then before it came out of Kim over here James is still kind of right around his normal usage and his field no no no not a ton his he's definitely backed off a little bit early on here the more efficient for sure I think the helps everybody because he's playmaking I'll know if anybody can stay in front of him one went especially on the break in when you get like as to make the passes the good passes out for the dog kind of like delcor passes having to kind of adjust to him because he's different a totally different and he he throws bullets from like mid air to it's like crazy he'd take your hands and training took a little segue but readjusts will they do a good job will get a fair price that's where homeadvisor can help and book appointments go to Homeadvisor DOT COM or download the free homeadvisor astor brick and mortar five all new episodes premiering Sunday November tenth okay promptly lectured me that you know in the immediate wake of that I'm still not as genuine as we are led to believe sometimes but this one is real to me their offense and then the ball and that James the reason he's one of the most effective most so anything that diminishes that by another guy's dominating the ball like where am I going wrong with I actually thought that was that one would work I was I was optimistic about that one because Chris Paul not as ball dominant as either those guys but I agree and disagree more complimentary even if you you take off the ball okay but you get that different kind of because you're already wired to load James All Times it's actual team because I'm actually on other side of that because I'm I'm like taking a ball the difference is the threat of of just overall thrust as a player right of that that that North Twenty four seven three sixty five yeah he's attack and he's right now in his room wherever relaxing the verdict is still deliberating it's early it's more seamless I think I was concerned with the idea that teams are just going to the shooter but he can shoot the ball the these makes a lot of threes he's we say that you're on the defense now right like because he's coming at you so that I think that's the finish on me so that is it goes both ways so you feel like this is this is the franchise record I mean a knee away from has ruined earlier earlier so you guys knew each other forever got to play together for on a basketball level I'm sure it's tough for him probably tougher you as his friend woody and now we've always wanted to play supposed to go to college together that was going to go play college like like wow 'cause you know I know the back you know everything you know so when you know this went on for us have done what we done yeah and you have to flip that switch pass because it's right it's happening so you have to and besides that the entire League has reshuffled over the summer and you guys have another about the ferment if warriors there's there's a lot of these great waves if the four years don't exist are the ones who kind of kept that was the obstacle you guys just could not get past during the two La teams everything else as you're watching this unfold over the summer like we shot or you thinking like Holy Shit the whole western conference just became like a like a madhouse a five car let me let me look at my cards let's see we got here let's not be no more so now you know how how does my hand look now you Knowing that if we just kept that that core you know a core has awesome it's fascinating thing right like because of the era that or the time that we're in and is much player movement Chris Paul George isn't with the Clippers so russ isn't getting traded you was or was not really about any tensions or anything else he's probably still on this roster if Paul like not even being in the midst of it it's crazy like this converses Chris Jericho for.

"Let's not compared to like instant oatmeal is not that fast. It takes a while to get to where you can close your eyes. And know exactly where you guys are. So. So that's what we're going to work towards to go from not only defensively office. Every day across his. So it's not instant oatmeal. What is it like in your mind trying to get this together and be a cohesive team around? Lebron? That was like four cliches in the matter of like, forty seconds like. I mean, you know, what like I just think so much of it is cliche now, they know exactly what to say, it's, but this idea, you're gonna know exactly where your players are. Listen if you can predict where land Stevenson is after playing with him for seven years. I'd be surprised right. He's like, you know, Michael Beasley, those guys are unpredictable by nature. So I'm not really buying that lets you can play well on defense, if you have requisite attention to detail you have enough lengthen quickness. I don't think that should take time. I think offense. Finding a rhythm. Particularly Luke Walton. I this is not like the players like knowing who you wanna play and who you wanna play together. I think that's the biggest factor for offense chemistry. But I think they have the makings. They're gonna pass the ball. I've never seen a James team not pass the ball. So they're gonna pass the ball. I think really is can they shoot? And will they try on defense on an every night basis? Talking to Jeff Van Gundy. Let's look around the league little bit. A lot of people think the team that could give Golden State the most trouble. And they did last year was the Houston Rockets. They have a horrible debut verse worst defensive performance in the dantonio tenure Carmelo Anthony comes off the bench doesn't play very well from Carmelo side. You see that changing at all anytime soon where he goes to the starting lineup or should he? I wouldn't think so I think right now unless they have an injury they wanna start James Ennis to try to fit into the Trevor REEs a role. He left to go to Phoenix and PJ. Tucker was such a valuable component for their team last year, and such a versatile defender that would think they would keep him in the lineup. Anthony is going to have plenty of minutes. You know, this idea that Carmelo Anthony? This is such a hard change. Dwayne Wade's been doing now going on two years. Same grab class even better career than Carmelo Anthony. Some sometimes it's not really about what you want and you'll have to get over yourself, your desires and understand come up and he's going to the hall of fame. He's either going to go to the hall of fame where he enjoys his last couple of years in the league and adapts gracefully to whatever he's asked to do. Or he's gonna go like some guys do fighting scratching Kline. Could maintain his old bowl and his old style of play. I hope he chooses the sacrifice for the betterment of the team role and enjoys it. What do you think he's gonna do? I think it's gonna be up and down. I think. He's gotta stop answering the question on how going to the bench impacts him and always bring it back to the team. And just keep saying until he's convinced himself. I'm gonna do whatever it takes for the team to be successful. Whatever they ask me. Sometimes you can talk yourself into role acceptance. But I think you know, you always got such a bad connotation now. But without even go you can't be a great player. Like, Carmelo Anthony has been or d'alene, wait. So to say, it's not going to stain when someone tells you we're better off with you coming off the bench and starting that has to be hard. But you have to get over it too. Because if you don't if you fight it all the way it takes away a lot of the joy of playing the game. And I hope you know, frankly, he's done so much in this game from scoring standpoint that it accepts his role. He's gonna still. Have his big nights or just not gonna be as often because hardening Paul are so dominant. Jeff Van Gundy with us breaking down the start of the NBA season. And one of the things you specifically talk about the Houston Rockets is they're gonna live and die by the three. The warriors have won a lot by the three. And then we have the Sixers who who finally got their first win in the second game of the year. But shooting continues to be a problem. The crowd was cheering Markelle Foltz made that first three he made five fifteen their two best players are two of their three best players. We believe faults and Simmons really don't shoot the ball. Very well is that a winning formula in today's NBA? Well, I wouldn't I would disagree with the assessment. That's falters their third. That's that's fair. No, you're right. Right. Like, so I think they've taken a gamble inserting Fulton into the starting lineup. They had one of the best most decision starting lineups last year in the league. I think what's best from plus minus standpoint with JJ rhetoric in the starting lineup to surround him be to surround Ben Simmons. Covington gives them range. Sars is not a great shooter as well. So, you know, rhetoric brought a component that was so valuable now, obviously they're trying to incorporate bolts into their team trying to inject him with some much needed confidence. Putting them in the starting lineup whether that's a long-term fit. I think remains to be seen because if you don't have shooting around him. It's gonna be hard for him to operate in the low post, and he's going to drift more and more to the perimeter. So I'm I'm really interested to see how that develops really plays. Great defense. So they moved the ball. They run great stuff. But at the end of the day, just like the Lakers, you actually have to shoot the ball, and it has to go in. That would be a key component. Jeff Van Gundy thinking about it. We all talk about all this other stuff right at the end of a possession. The warriors what they run. Anything special shooting is incredible. Like, it's astronomically better than any any team. We've ever seen from range. Right. The that the way they can catch and shoot on the move off shooting all three off the dribble. It's amazing. It's not they're tricking people with what they do. They move it. Well, they move people. Well, but you've got to put the ball in the basket and a team that does it well and going back to the east both offensively and defensively. The Boston Celtics Jeff with the east opening up now that LeBron is gone. We saying oh, man. There's more than a few teams that can take it. It seems that Boston is at the top of that list. If you agree there at the top of that list. How far ahead of everybody else? Are they in your mind? I think they are the best team. I I like their chances against whoever comes out of the west better than the other eastern teams because of their depth their length and quickness defensively. Yeah, they're a far better defensive team and sixteen they are a dominant defensive teams. And so I think they can hang their hat on that every night offense. Just like most teams there's going to be up and down. So they've got that component up depth in defense that in the regular season is hard to overcome. And then you know to see how much separation they have passed Toronto patch Philly or passing a walkie. I think so much depends on how they all share. Right. So they have you know, you got. X amount of minutes. It doesn't change and will guys who play bigger roles last year. Be happier in smaller roles this year, Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward when they get back and their whole and healthy, they're gonna play more. And when they do that means less for others. And how do they adapt and adjust to that? That's the only thing that can get no way. I think there are sixty one team. And I think they can put a real scared. Whoever comes out of the west Jeff Van Gundy with a C we broken down all the important things. Now, let's get to the biggest issue facing. Jeff Gundy, are NBA analyst your brother STAN is now in the family the NBA basketball family here in the ESPN family. What are the odds that we have a Van Gundy Van Gundy calling a game anytime soon? Well, I defer that to the great mind of Tim Corrigan and Samantha on the not. So like, I don't have anything to do with that. But like, I get I get real nervous. When people start talking about he's part of the family. It sounds like mob type. You know what I mean? So like, and you know, what like when they say family to like, I always used to say like, you know, people would say, hey, we're a family and on a sports team like have you ever gotten cut out of your real family or fired from your real family? No. So like we worked together, I think Stanton's gonna be good. I can't wait till I listened to him one time preseason he was doing something. That was good. I hope he enjoys it though. I really do because I found it to be so much of it like any job is who you work with. So Trey I feel for you. I know you got a problem with golden a problem. Ow. Anchor. I I'm with you. Yeah. Right. So, but so much of it who you work with. And that's the thing. I've loved about ESPN. Well, listen, Tim's a friend of mine neighbor Timmel definitely want to. This is going to have put that to rest. Hey, jeff. We appreciate you being with us. And we'll talk to you soon. Okay. Thanks, Jeff anytime guys take care that sounds like it's right up Tim going, obviously, this is you know, that the spun Tim's mine on that. And that would be must I would tune into that game. No matter. Poll rankings the older ones. Try and say, you know, what? I should get more words here we go. We know how that will go, and we can't wait to see it coming up here should a team.

"Win away from the NBA finals. Behind the back. Punches at a love ten on the rear. The Houston Rockets pushed the Golden State Warriors, the breakable limitation in the Western Conference finals. Ultimately losing game seven with Chris. Paul sidelined by hamstring injury. Most teams get us last year actually do in the title. Obviously we didn't get it done. We're very confident going in. We've got a great shot. It's going to take a lot of work, but we're excited about the season nevertheless, rockets GM Daryl Morey had his vision validated. Paul league MPP, James harden, brilliant young. MAURICE constructed a roster to chase down the defending champs, and now Houston returns to camp with a reshape lineup and the clock ticking on its title window. When you make all you, here's he had a great season guys. Nations here that awesome rhythm targeting this time. She still run it back with Carmelo Anthony promising to be an unselfish under study the pollen. James hearted. These rockets are built for speed and three pointers, and maybe two built to beat the two-time defending NBA champions. Welcome back to the jump critic, ELO crowded up here. We got adult daily, double going on the rockets owner, big, big, welcome. For more general manager, my fellow northwestern guys all. Yeah, I wanna know how excited you are about this year's team. I'm so excited and and we were a great team last year when in sixty five games in a in a hamstring away from from getting to the ship. And that's just a fact. Okay, it is. And and Chris, it kind of been our stopper all year whenever somebody got on a run, but I'm gonna tell you. We really improved ourselves this year and we've made a lot of moves. We have six new players. But if you just look at at who we lost and who we gained, we're really good. So you guys may some significant addition to the team ELO James innings, and Michael Carter Williams. Are you done tweaking Rosser I I know. Question. I mean, we we do try to peek in April, so there's always a chance, but we're feeling great about coach. Dan Tony was was on this. I, I mean, he was saying real early. We're better than last year and I'm there now having seen our training camp in our players with mellow Carter Williams, James Ennis, you know, Brandon night's gonna help us down the road. So yeah, we're excited about where you know, that's not the common perception that we're talking about this in the commercial break the ideas. Oh, well, Trevor REEs gun with Luke, my mood day gun and everyone's a, you're older and mellow coming in the perception, isn't that the you're not concerned about that you told me we like beating perceptions. We've we've done it. I think I saw just talking about Vegas before we got on here that we've beaten the, we've, we've been a of the wing. We pan of the twelve years we've we've been here. So remember that's what other people here. One other show and it just becomes a line. Okay, but, but we're the ones that the practices we're the ones watching. We watched the s. lettuces compared to to last year out of these new guys and they're just really at add. Remember Chris, Paul and James make people look better from the teams that these guys were on life here. They're not the same player, and that's what I think people are gonna see this year, right near and tracing talking before, like what would happen if he was in coached, Antonis offense and he'd, he'd probably. Fifth, straight of the, he's it's, yeah, the coaching staff and the players are are all in harmony to to help us one games. You said that they players different when they're here? Carmelo, Anthony is banking on the fact that he is going to be different here certainly from his year last year, what convinced you guys that? This was a good idea to bring him in that it's gonna work. I mean, Carmelo so far just to show you where he's at and his skill set and what coach is already getting out of them. He played the five last night screen roll and finish the basket. I'm not sure he's ever done that. Maybe it Syracuse, he was able to run the floor and get a pass from James harden, and like I think five seconds on the clock had a three Carmelo is an extremely talented player..

"The houston rockets and they took him into a seven game and we know the warriors won that but really what the nba it sets up as we come mm to a close on this week what is going to happen over the next month and we'll see what dominos fall and the arm races in the nba were teams are going to try to narrow the gap this year to hopefully for future years be able to usurp the dominance of the golden state warriors and obviously that all starts with lebron who also this past week could have played his last game with the cleveland cavaliers and oh yeah by the way as we touch on the nhl and we touch on the nba and we talk about those championships that were one we also i'd be remiss in the opening segment if we didn't talk about the ponies 'cause justify did win belmont and won the triple crown so we congratulate bob baffert the trainer who is just an iconic trainer and he gets another triple crown remember he did train american farrow who wanted four years ago mike smith the jockey who's fifty two and he is the oldest jockey to win the triple crown and you also gotta give credit to the actual horse physically running in the race and justify who went wiretowire from start to finish he was the best horse at the belmont and he wins the triple crown and people were questioning the endurance of justify could he survive the longest leg of the triple crown he only not only did he just survive but it wasn't even close.

"Governor switch like on on on their offense because what happens the golden state warriors are the third third quarter that's what they are because you know every single game the third quarter they just kind of lounge around and then they come out at halftime and they go i mean yeah okay i guess it's time to play let's go in the plus minus of them the warriors on on every game this year in the third quarter is something like a thousand points in their shop they're good they are they're shot makers man i don't this team to me other than that and it's a very important tool obviously but i don't see anything elite about golden state of the their ability to make shots they gave a hundred spectators one hundred fourteen i don't see anything more elite of the golden state warriors other than their ability to make shots that's the name of the game of basketball so i go but but let me ask you this do you know who led the nba in threes made this year the rocket houston rockets houston rockets this is what i'm saying right we look at we look at this this first game against cleveland one twenty four one fourteen in overtime and the only difference in overtime was has some bad possessions golden state scored every position during the whole game it was tototo and cleveland had the edge because because of the guy obviously but with that being said man i just don't i don't see like everybody i'm not i'm not gonna be a idiot and say that golden state is a is a better team let's not get it twisted but there is a way you can play golden state to get there to keep them at bay somewhat houston did we chris paul when remember in houston series with chris paul when was in a game and james harden was out either foul trouble or something like that and they slow the game down and the game the game stay closed and remained close in they ended up getting the w that pj tucker was the board guy that's the same guy that tristan thompson is just a horde own the boards offensive rebounds all of that they can there are areas in golden state game where they can be taken advantage of search situation the great equalizer for them though is the fact.
