"This January 3rd 1993 Houston Oilers are up 35 to 3. Minute 41 into the third quarter. They would fall 41 38 about Frank, right. The legend of the Buffalo Bills back in the day. Also this day in history, Nick's saving decided. Hey, I'm leaving Alabama. I'm gonna be the Miami Dolphins head coach. Actually, vice versa. He left the Dolphins have become the head coach over at the Alabama Crimson tide. It worked out fairly well for them. Peter Burns, Katie George here on best week ever. Katie. It's time for straight talk brought to you by straight talk Wireless. You said that there's one key part that people are missing about Tom Herman being let go in Austin. Why that didn't work and start being hired might be questionable as well. What is that? Well, I think so often. When we talk about the job at Texas, All of it revolves around the boosters, and you have to be able to talk and schmooze with the boosters right because they carry so much weight and They're really the ones behind the decisions being made. And there is so much to that because you're not just taking the head coaching job in Texas to be an ex isn't Oh's guy. And, yes, Stark. Is that true? Because of what he's able to do it Alabama and just in his past, I mean, he's a brilliant offensive mind. But there is this aspect of it where you have to be a politician, But I think the part that people miss and I was told this story. Remember who followed Charlie Strong from Global to Texas when he took the job and then also was retained on Tom Herman staff when he came in was The connection in the relationships you have to have with the local high school head football coaches in the state of Texas. There's this God complex with a lot of these coaches at the high school level who feel Like they deserve consideration for this head coaching job at Texas. Where is they can't fathom that they would bring somebody from the outside in to take over that job until immediately. You're on the defense because these coaches View you as an outsider. They don't think that you're worthy of the job, and therefore they don't help you recruit in state talent. And so that was Kind of eye opening to me when Charlie Strong took the job because I remember being friends with a lot of people on staff at that time and just family friends until we asked, how's it going? The response that we got every time was. You have no idea how challenging it is to recruit kids from the state of Texas right in our backyard because they don't believe in coach strong now. I don't know if that changed when coach Herman came in, and they viewed him or as one of them one of their own. But I think it's a factor that people don't consider a part of the equation. When you're looking at who can be successful being the head coach at Texas I think Mack Brown has this ability to relate to everyone and make you feel part of it and draw you in. So therefore I feel like he had success with these local high school coaches. But if you don't have that ability You're gonna be starting well behind the start gate. And I just think that the high school coaches play a large factor in this equation that people don't really talk about. And I think Sam Macho brought that point up and it was great to hear. And that's why it's interesting to see Sarkeesian not necessarily known as the big politician, but he is known for being an extra dose guy and I will say this I did see a lot of people say, Well, you know what Texas is just left for dead. It will never be anything different than Nebraska. And that's factually wrong. The difference is now is that Texas can have those recruits. They're in that that pipeline of recruiting talent. However, like you said, you have to have the exes and Oh's. I think now at some point you can see what's Turkey's in did at Alabama and say This is why you need to be here. Also kind of gonna be interesting to remember the transfer. You'll have one time transfers more than likely coming up next year, and everybody just had a free your eligibility. How many people say I want to use that one year transfer and say, I want to go play over at Texas? I just all air Gilbert for tight end for l s u Unbelievable. 66 tight end type kid. It was great for the Tigers of First year. His name's in the transfer portal That could be a situation where Hey, all of a sudden they land there because see Sarkeesian is turning out millionaires in the NFL. All right, so much on the line in the NFL coming up Who makes it to the postseason, which team are contenders? And yes. Will there be snow in Buffalo for two hours game? I can't wait for it will break that down. Coming up. You can hit us up on Twitter. Katie underscored George of five myself at Peter Burns, ESPN. "This but he was what donald trump wanted talk. He it'll be dropping after the election so but anyway go ahead He he was very good at bringing people together and making deals and he said i can't make this happen. It just won't work. People aren't going to get behind a huge bond issue while all this money is still on the astrodome. So that was that was the that was when it became clear to me that this thing was going nowhere and yesterday they were going to lead on of course now. We had all prophets of doom saying. Well it'll be forever before houston gets another. Nfl years Many years was at i. Five four five. Something like i think. That's right yeah but And at that point The the the jig was up. That was all that was That that was all that could be done. That was going to be done. And so now we start getting these visuals bud shutting off to nashville and and putting his deal there in place so they They did their deal. The oilers were supposed to play in houston three more years while the stadium was being built in nashville and that turned out in the first year to be every bit the disaster you might have predicted welcoming. It's become a lame duck thing right. My understanding is that with the end of the ninety five seen as we ninety five seasons when it was announced but when was it in the air was it was a before then or was it really a surprise in at when the announcement came in and of the ninety five six. I think it came into focus for people and ninety five. Yeah and so. They're supposed to play three more years and ninety six They had crowds not every game but some games of fewer than thirty thousand fans. I mean you know. This is football country. That was unheard of good team and gm whatever People were just a past the anger stage. It was. we don't care anymore. They've decided to go so we're sort of writing them out his spree at least out of our current context and so the league stepped in and got everybody together and they decided that. Go to memphis because there is a suitable stadium there and play for two years there until the stadium was ready for. That's what happens in the fans in memphis didn't like that either because they knew they were the a situation there too they were just a temporary waystation right and that too i just so how about jeff fisher the coach at the time right he. I think it's lost on all of us in this. Is this fisher. Obviously a big a character in where the The now titans sort of came into being but fisher was the coach of this thing. Ninety five and ninety six. I mean he must have and frankly brought them back to a little bit of respectability but how does he and his staff and the players have handled all this. Because we're talking about a very Traumatic kind of period of time. The last year's in houston the the couple of years in memphis while the nashville things sort of plays out and then ultimately trying to domicile in nashville. That could not have been helpful or or easy in in this process. Either no fisher. Fisher was a good man. He'd he handled it professionally and even stoically. He just kept his mouth shut. He took his lumps. They did the best he could with what he had. And i think it's fortunate he was rewarded by getting to stay on. He had been on staff. He'd been secondary coach before he was promoted to head coach. So he he been around. He knew where the bodies were buried. He knew the personalities involved and he just Just bit his. His lip is on in and and kept his head down and handled it. All is well as anyone could have. Thanks so it was good that he got to have a taste of success. After i finally got smash so as the team is overstaying. It's welcome i guess. Ninety five ninety six and the team sort of Fumbles its way into tennessee. And then ultimately to to nashville by ninety nine so give me a sense of was there any feeling of abandonment by the fans and or the sports media there and houston or was it kind of good riddance and i guess. The the the kicker of that question is what were the houston fans and maybe even the sports media feeling once the titans in their first year in nashville when all the super bowl. Was there. Sort of indignation where those with certain closet rooting for the team or was it. Was it pretty much a clean break. Because you know you had your chance and you you left us. And we don't really care how you're doing going forward like i guess. The lingering fandom is there was there is there still any During that process of leaving and then ultimately where they've been living for years since well a there's always gonna be some nostalgia. I mean i the years. I still occasionally get an email now then from somebody who said i just reread your book. It's always going to be a few. But i would say houston process the oilers leaving and ninety five well really and ninety five. There was there was anger that there was righteous indignation and there was some and it wasn't all directed but out. There were the diehard fans. Love the thought that the city and the mayor should have done whatever was necessary to keep the team and used so all that was processed by ninety six. The deal was done. He signed his contract in nashville. And so it's it was. Let's move on and that's what you said he did it. Was you know whatever whatever thought there was put into crowfoot all in houston back then was what are we gonna do to get an intake. And i don't remember just when but you know. Discussion started about a new stadium You could do a new stadium even with money owed on the astrodome. If bud wasn't going to get the benefit because he had been the guy who Who did the shake now. So by the time the tennessee titans went to the super bowl. I know that houston really noticed. It was it was though the The seattle seahawks non to the super bowl. I that's that's my recollection going back. Close.

"An army to get him to get him on the ground but for sure and and all the the video shows it right. I mean and it's also even more interesting. I did to clarify. He was Earl was the mvp of the league and seventy nine but he was offensive player of the year. For seventy eight seventy nine and eighty and he was. He was also the offensive rookie of the year. At seventy people. Sort of forget that Earl made this splash coming right out of college right which is certainly possible. But it's not always the easiest thing making that transition from the collegiate game to the pro game right. Yeah he was that good He didn't he didn't miss a beat. He was as dominant force in in the pros as he had been in college. Yes that is. That's very rare. Well so tell me about the love. Love your blue thing right. Because i'm i'm just really curious about how the fans sort of took to this right i. It's interesting in my research. And i knew enough. I mean i certainly remember the that original houston oilers number one song which i think by the way we'll will have embedded in our episode. Once we drop this. But i think on a per capita basis the houston oilers may have had more official and unofficial theme songs in their career than just about any team that we've explored. This far would.

"Both college and pro and used well. So what i'm guessing so if you're at ut around nineteen sixty five or so that. I'm by my estimation then means that you were and this is a theme in in a lot of investigations of various teams and people remembering them and stuff. Your formative years right. We're probably around those first years of not only the original houston oilers but the afl and particularly specifically right overall and. oh by the way the houston oilers. Were the first champions of this new. Afl in six. Yeah sure absolutely. Yeah they had it was it was very much a minor league back then and we understood that it wasn't the nfl until the merger but still it was It was football professional football. It was our team and Yeah we were very much at all. Well so when does. When does the the story and this book for you and the the the i guess the chronicling of no pond maybe pawn Of the of the team and other of their doings when is it one is cross. I guess time wise for you from being a childhood fan and maybe even an adult fan into this is the gig. You're covering them in your now part of Telling the story maybe on a daily basis or even more so Of the oilers. Well i had gravitated from austin ba- city to chicago and then back to houston and became the lead. Powell missed On the houston chronicle nineteen eighty. So i was you know while i wasn't reporter. I was around team a lot. I've made virtually every road trip. I thank again. This was a different era in the newspaper business. I mean we would send six rioters in two photographers on the road with the oilers and so I was. I was present for all that i was at Usually during the season i was out of. While i wasn't football writer i was still at practice On average once a week. And i wrote a lot about the oilers. The book came about when the publisher came to me and said. Hey we want this We want you to do this. We will like your work We think there's a place for this book and here's an advanced and we want you to right. Well it's interesting that that around nineteen eighty or so is when you're kind of i sort of Spilling some ink on the oilers team because this was probably about the first time in their nfl existence i e after the The merger in sixty nine and seventy Or arguably the merger was underway before that. But because this is sort of the first real taste i guess of the oilers actually being competitive with bum phillips at the at the at the Know behind the scenes. You pulling strings and earl campbell. Of course Blazing away I i. I'm just curious to as you become sort of more shall we say professionally responsible for at least some level of covering and commenting on this team What was sort of the oilers experience around that time. Because i think that's when a lot of people really maybe for the first time generation. Only certainly i can remember growing up in the new york metro area. You know the oilers were actually one of the teams. You'd hope for would be on monday night football because they were actually exciting and fun to watch. But that wasn't always the case certainly in the first decade in the nfl and certainly a longtime away from their early success back in the beginnings of the afl. Yeah well the one constant In oilers history was the owner ks budd adults. It was an oil man the son of an oklahoma oilman. He grew up in bartlesville in northern oklahoma and made his way to houston in the oil business became involved in watson other businesses as well and he was a shower say quixotic figure so they had the earliest success as you mentioned one the afl championship the first two years but he made some interesting and unfortunate personnel choice in so long way and then a wandered in the desert for quite a long time in the early nfl and yeah I moved back to houston in nineteen seventy five. I started writing sports in houston in nineteen seventy eight and then became a columnist in nineteen eighty so i was present there for the the bum. Phillips are what's called the love you blew era. Shown it you know it's pretty hard. It's pretty hard thinking back through all those years to describe it in a way that stat tile to people. Who weren't there. It was probably i still think the greatest love affair between a city and a team certainly a team that number one the big prize in in the history of american sports. I mean houston was just enraptured with the oilers and we had you know fight songs and all kinds colleges sort of atmosphere and they went to pittsburgh lost the first afc championship jayme lead played in and they came back and the word had gotten out that there was going to be a sort of a pep rally to welcome the team back home. I mean they got hammered and pittsburgh. I think it was thirty. Four or five as and nineteen seventy eight season. Yeah yeah and in and they asked for bone was bursting at the scenes. It was overflow. It was giant party For a team. That had just gotten clobbered in pittsburg pittsburg was immeasurably more talented team. I mean that was swann. Stallworth and bradshaw. Ham and lambert franko harris and mean. Joe greene. i mean you know this was a whole team hall of famers and the oilers had campbell and was pretty much it for. I mean real superstar level towns and yet bum phillips had these guys playing so far over their heads that the city just became infatuated women than they went back to the afc championship game in pittsburgh the following here and lost again much more competitive game. That might have gone differently if not for a real controversy or call catching the ends. And so you know. The cowboys had pretty much own taxes. Up until the bum phillips days but during philip's tenure there. I mean there were radio stations. All over the state. I mean even in west texas clearing the oilers games that had had no interest for and i it the whole state not to say the cowboys were forgotten or lost their following. They didn't but they certainly gave up a big chunk of it to the oilers..

"Houston and frankly people in texas in the afc The afc or the the current of see whatever and the old afl for that matter What a what a story this was. And frankly in many respects kind of continues to be the legacy of very much lives on the the colors and the The the logo the name and of course the history. And we're going to get into the story of the houston oilers this week. With our special. Guest ed fowler. The reverend ed fowler retired but still actually a real honest to goodness anglican church minister slash. Reverend ed fowler is an interesting part of the story here to We'll sort of get into that Interesting career change. And what was ed. Prior to his higher calling shall we say he was a longtime sportswriter. Yeah lies largely in the the houston metropolitan area with the houston chronicle but before that Places like the austin american statesman the kansas city star the chicago daily news here closer to us or what used to be closer to us back in the day when new newspapers were thing and sports writing in those newspapers were more than the thing they were probably frankly The sort of unwritten reason. Why a lot of people actually subscribe because the sports section was Not only journalism but also Diversion from The The distractions of of crazier world in the earlier. Sections produce paper but ed fowler as an interesting story himself but also the topic at hand that we're going to get into. We're going to use him and his Book that came out in the late seventies late nineties. Yeah i go. There was nineteen ninety-seven in particular And this is how we sort of discovered in an and got in contact with ed. The book is called. Loser takes all but adams key part part of the story for sure but adams bad football and big business. It's really the story of the houston oilers and sort of how it came and a mesli went and and our conversation this week with fowler gets into the story of the book the story of the oilers and as you can imagine we we try to tackle the attended. Yes pun intended All of those issues relating to The ops and certainly there were a number of them But largely downs especially on the way out of the The houston oilers. Now of course Represented in reconstituted form as the tennessee. Titans and yes. We talk about the tennessee oilers for a couple years again that messy departure from houston and at last check. Not a whole lot of oil in anywhere in the state of tennessee. But now that didn't stop the team for still being called the tennessee oilers for a couple of years before they Firmly and Officially domiciled themselves in nashville Two years many forget were a prior to that in tennessee in memphis at the liberty bowl. That's where they were known as the tennessee oilers. In before becoming the titans are all part of the the lower and the legacy and the very interesting stories. A related to that and The clip at the beginning kind of gives a sort of a hand. It certainly is debatable. As to win the era in the late seventies kind of started It is known without Conjecture however as the let's call it the love ya blue era. This is around the time. The nineteen seventy eight seventy nine eighty or so when the houston oilers were probably amongst The hottest if not in cer- certain areas of nfl football the hottest team going with an amazing array of stars including one Hot rookie by the name of earl campbell. Phenomenon really is an understatement. I guess not only in houston but in the nfl itself and it took a little while to kinda of geel into what actually became a trademark phenomenon. Literally called love your blue. but most scholars Would kinda circle around november twentieth nineteen seventy eight and the monday night football game that you just heard a little clip from the intro to frank gifford and howard cosell dan where the The oilers were hosting a nationally. Televised game against the miami dolphins and Was sort of a sort of a burst of of energy and color and noise That absolutely came across on the on the broadcast the poms waving everywhere and a hell of a game and actually many people think that is perhaps one of the best monday night. Football games of all time that game when the oilers One a very entertaining game. It's it's all there on youtube behind earl campbell. Almost two hundred rushing yards. I want to say he had one hundred ninety nine actually four touchdowns he ran for and the oilers one out and a thirty five to thirty Victory certainly others might look at some later games. But this was a national sort of shot across the bow so to speak and there's a lot of of of energy and end up going on there i some would also Frankly suggests that the next year December i think december tenth to Nineteen seventy nine to ninety seven about a year. Later was when sort of the love. You blew sort of trademark era. I guess sort of occurred but regardless of when you think it was also another monday night. Football game by the way. I regardless of how you sort of circle around it if you were there at the time and or you were just an nfl fan at the time. Paying attention is probably Burn in your memory. What this love. Your blue phenomenon was and it was absolutely ahead of time. Arguably the apex of the of the excitement that was this is franchise. Plenty of of of nadir's of course Along the way. "We? What are we talking about Things about And the Santa gave me this example. Earlier when Houston the Oilers, they were obviously in Houston, they moved and they're now in Tennessee. And but what we think about Earl Campbell. We think about the Houston Oilers, right? We don't think about the Tennessee Titans for sure, Campbell's and oil there's not a Titan exactly right, but it's a lot, but it's the same team same team in a sense. Even though I think that they leave their now they took their history with them. Yeah, So the history is still there. Like how you how you how you gonna deal with that and well so many ways, especially because It's not like the Oilers changing to the Titans. You're getting rid of a word or a nickname. That is offensive. So how do you refer? Historically, once it's changed, right, it's it's more complicated than I think. You know, it should be, But it's the truth. You still got to reckon with it. Well, I'll take it even a step further. I mean, you walk through the holes of Canton, Ohio. This is a moment I got it. One second, baby. I can't tell you how conflict that I am. Right now. "Of a bar killed so it will set up a third down at about three for the Houston Oilers each of these teams obviously talent laden nine pro bowlers for each squad for a visiting team which the Houston Oilers are here this is a perfect opening drive I mean you want very much to come out and and get some to go when you're opening drive but your confidence going take the crowd out of the game if you can improve your mood is mixed up his run one will run the ball once in three to three different receivers still against the three men right now they put up just a little bit better defensively warranty why don't we play running through the state J. standing defense particularly Darryl Talley redid their decision about going for a field goal because there is a very stiff wind very stiff wind al del Greco would be kicking into I don't believe they're gonna go for it because of that reason on fourth and one yeah the kicking it to win it is step it's about twenty miles an hour lotus is it it does tackle another defensive lineman he replaces seeing Houston eighty seven your against the six is due to leave two seconds he got the line went to the outside and I think made enough for the.

"The Oilers and the bills let's get you back to Howard David and Pat Haden for the final six minutes of the third quarter Houston up thirty five to seventeen but trying to prevent a third straight bills touchdown buffalo begins the possession with the ball at their own forty one yard line this is what he used to do with our defense must make something happen and it's hard to believe he could say that with a thirty five seventeen game but you're right right gears it out down the right side of his knees is made by teams that's good first to the day when the thirty six year old fifteen year program Stanford well you know that the bills are doing something smart to they're trying to get as much production as they as they can in this quarter because they do or throwing down within twenty no no one in the back nobody because they know that fourth quarter they're gonna have to throw against it and Dr Kenneth Davis running left that he is knocked down a media outlet that's a nice play by Sean Jones it is nine year from northeastern he spent four years with the raiders before coming to the Houston Oilers and he has been on a roll about the last half a dozen games he's had five sacks well you think about Sean Jones and ray Childress and Lee Williams and Williams all or they have some pretty good defensive lineman Jeff home was injured unable to play during the playoffs but did they get some nice depth and defensive line right got every shot gun second down the nine steps up with a pocket airs it out deep down the right side but there's a flag on the play there was a P. B. old we did all the against that would be against the bills number seventy nine all four what you must be seventy five yeah there is going to be seventy nine buffalo that I'm aware of unless they brought in a ringer it's a big big deal he was but Howard Ballard the the right tail number seventy five given the relatively free of penalty it's only the third penalty against buffalo for fifteen yards so it will be second down in fourteen doubtful Frank Reich in relief of the injured Jim Kelly question as to whether or not Kelly could play beyond this week or not may be a moot point because the Houston Oilers leave thirty five seventeen they have a thirty five to three lead and even Jack Pardee with eighteen point cushion has to be a little bit nervous right now the buffalo get another score here before this third quarter resented it's then becomes an eleven point game mmhm in the last fourteen games in the AFC playoff history home teams won fourteen times and right now the home team is behind it thirty five seventy and as we said they're trying to squeeze as much out of this quarter as they can when they're going down wind right got a shot going back to pass switch it out of the backfield Candice Davis the screen pass inside according to the thirty five thirty we need his a bit of the rain and read this back to make the hit want to tell you how we're down or got away with a hold on William fuller as he was rushing the passer a good screen pass by the bills they're one of the best Minnesota Vikings a good screen team all the news many yesterday in their loss to the Redskins that was a well set up screen on the right side to Kenneth Davis at the nineteen yard game for buffalo first and ten of the twenty six at right back role model they're all the same Houston ages in the next two hours absolutely bring a seat right now he was used to open on that play and what they're doing to these very aggressive boiler defensive backs to double moves on he Jerry gray the second time today for touchdowns on a double you figure out you go up and you're wide open Steve Christie for the extra point what I need to go to the book today bills have scored three unanswered touchdowns here the third this is after going down by the greatest episode thirty five degree a minute forty one seconds into the third quarter what a big downloaders separate supported with fifty eight yards with a touchdown and made a thirty five to three you probably going to stick a fork in buffalo because they would be done I think the back with three straight scoring yeah I give them some subreddit they really have Frank Reich is look like a different quarterback he's gotten excellent protection it's been a double cut loose the Jerry gray twice now touchdowns the same rule receiver goes down thanks for the many close over the top with a touchdown in as I pointed out as I said this game was over you over yet but I still think the visitors leading by eleven points this is gonna take two touchdowns and remember they still have more room but I think what's key for the orders right now is not is what your mood is trying to get something going with Paul runs a white there is a white you'd like to get the crowd settled down a little bit you know they're going to be very loud the next time war movie jobs in the field it's going to be difficult to pull this but maybe we could squeeze out a first down or two on the ground with the original white white of down break right total fourteen three hundred and seventy one yards two touchdowns in the third quarter the Houston Oilers watch Steve Christy Dr Beale fielded by letting them know we're going to go through to the end zone and hill down in the end zone they'll bring it out to the twenty yard line but there is no question at the Houston Oilers are seeking right now even though they have an eleven point lead remember how good both little has been at home over the last number of years yes they lost two games here this year but the three previous years they had not lost a home game so now the Houston Oilers twelve seed Warren moon delivered nearly a perfect pass misfired on only three passes out of twenty two that he threw in the first half recording played this only had the ball group to position and what was the defense's position this is the third year second offensive possession back to the school bills thirteen yeah yeah we do thank you S. plans is it makes the connection the web's the scenarios but that amounted to twenty seven yard line there is a white was upset the backfield that's going to be a guest room Lindsey Whitehead moved up to hear the audible here the snap count got caught movie illegals as you need a big play this game as important as talents his confidence right now this buffalo team their offense has given the defense confidence you're you're absolutely right but there's no reason why the order offense should feel confident the way they played the first half but you're absolutely right the adrenaline is flowing the report they're moving quickly on defense and the players on the sidelines of the crowd seventy one should rich stadium where we need to do a lot worse than fifty eight does it deep down the middle we change the twenty twenty three yes it makes in some way Houston twenty a sixteen yard would turn in regionals with most interceptions in the NFL this year where they just going to mention any return to those nine interceptions for touchdowns though this wasn't the receiver's fault he was over the head of Webster slaughter just put a hand on it on it in Henry Jones well in a very good strong safety because he's played very good close to the line of scrimmage in the run defense throughout the year and then it just terrific in pass defense intercepted his night mass read walked in to the right B. B. to the left Kenneth Davis stays in as a running back he gets the ball running right to about the twenty one maybe the twenty yard line now three and a half to go the third quarter bills don't have to hurry right now they get a touch down here get a whole quarter to play even if we get a field goal quickly precisely precisely it inflicted over the Houston oiler defense what they need to do is is two things one make sure they don't score a touchdown forced the field goal attempt what more even more poorly perhaps trying to force the turnover forced a fumble get somebody in right speaks in the first half they put a lot of pressure on them they have not said second in seven the lady and Dr Kenneth Davis running right slipped out of one tackle but not the second he gets a couple who about the eighteen yard line is pulled down by Al Smith the low bar laden what day Kenneth Davis yeah running awfully hard and now you come up to a situation which is now third in five again though the Houston orders leading thirty five to twenty four to thirty remaining in the third quarter I mean this is a download on thirty five over the last couple years Andre Reid has owned hello readers lined up all the right ones didn't beat me to the left and right right loading the signals takes the snap drops back to pass with time scribbles to the right looking around and throws it to the ground do almost avoid Sacchi at Kenneth Davis in the neighborhood and we'll see if Marv levy sensible field goal team has to I haven't seen any movement yet by the field goal unit the operative unit is still out on the field I don't know what to do let's see it's eleven point game how to kick a field goal is still down but by two scores yeah so you write that they need to go for here which they will know if that was the thought process though maybe take two runs on thirty five now.

It feels different this time for Buffalo Bills and their fans

"Fans a couple of fans have been is tortured as it gets not just in the NFL but all of sports you wonder why they're throwing dudes through tables before games during games after games it's because of some frustration of that when you think about the numbers when it comes to the bills there's not one playoff game twenty four years twenty four years now I know some of you are probably so we say you guys with the four super bowls what's the big deal it bills what the four super bowls but when you lose an agonizing fashion that's part of the heart break that's why those moments are show defining and people remember now there's also the good ninety three and you're gonna hear a lot about this you'll probably see that video worn out I'm television throughout the day but Frank right leading the bills that forty one thirty eight overtime victory over the Houston Oilers and a wild card playoff game known as the comeback I don't know is it really known as the come back to other people if you say the come back is that what they reference like the drive and the fumble you know exactly the games you know it's the Broncos and the Browns even the shot exhibiting Cleveland is immortalized with some words the shot you know that's Michael Jordan over Craig ehlo but the come back there but a lot of comebacks but none like this in the playoffs twenty eight to three what's the score I was watching that game I'll never forget that came that was very early those are the formative years those the years of the finer child like there there are so many things that happened over the last five years I don't remember in sports at a pretty big moments because now I'm older there's more stuff the closure mine but when you're young and you get a defining moment like that okay or like Hey Scott Norwood missed field goal to try to win a game against the giants like does things are etched in your mind forever unless you're a big time gambler and then of course you remember a lot of the big time

I mentioned that he started out with the Oilers when they were in the AFL, and I don't know if there are many people that remember what the old AFL was. I've had a lot of friends that played during the period of time that you did tell everybody, what that league was like at that time can. What that was a while when I when I say, wow, a lot of speed. "Time again five O six here on Tuesday morning, January the fifth edition of the Tennessee star reported the early edition. Doug Elliott along with Michael Patrick layhee? Good to be with you this morning state of the union address coming up tonight, and you know, no government shutdown. So the president will get to address will there be an appearance by Ruth, Bader Ginsburg. No one is senior in quite a while. But you correctly correction one I did see that story this morning that apparently she has surface layer. So. Well. Correct correction with an asterisk. With an ass juris. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. I saw that last night. It was apparently a story in the Daily Mail that that said roof baiter Ginsburg has been seen. Well, people have been looking for because you know, she's sort of disappeared. Right. Well, someone who is still alive. Sort of seen. What happened Doug is this? She was a guest at a concert given by her daughter-in-law or she was going to be a guest at a daughter, given by her constant by her daughter-in-law in Washington DC last night. That was a story. There was no picture. Oh, so we we don't have definitive proof. Right. Maybe it's like the old football coach in the NFL. They used to leave tickets Elvis just engaging with would show, Jerry Glanville. He was the coach of the then Houston Oilers now the Tennessee titans. And then so, yeah, he used to leave these tickets, you know, just in case Elvis would show up. I don't know that he ever did. But you know to claim moves tickets. But maybe that's what happened last night. Judge Ginsburg was supposed to be there. Did she claim the tickets are they still at the box office? So it's interesting. That story was framed right because we've all been going. We're in the world is judge Ruth, Bader Ginsburg. Yeah. It's it's it's been sort of a mystery there. And then you know, we know that she's been ill and cancer show up tonight. I wonder so. Yeah. Joe remember she boycotted it last year. Because. Unbiased. Well, the thing is she fell asleep beer before. Why was Obama was president? She sat a few glasses of wine there. She is an off Ruth Ruth. It's a state of the union. So we have the state of the union, according to all of the I guess, it's speculation. Maybe the maybe administration is released information on the president will call for unity tonight. Yeah. Unity coming from Nancy Pelosi. Chuck Schumer and she's going to be sitting right behind him. You send your as your coach tells the unity is everybody's calling on governor. Ralph Northam of Virginia to resign except the baby killing racist. Lying governor democrat of Virginia. Saying no, I think I'm saying, well, apparently, the latest I think in the story is at the the Lieutenant governor who's African American who would be the guy that would would step into the job, if the, you know, the governor resigned now he's being accused of sexual harassment or something. Well, it gets better. It gets better. You get gets better than that showed Virginia's in trouble this well, and he the the African American Lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax hinted broadly that north leaked that old story. He claimed in order to make it harder for people to force north them to resign. So this is you know, Mr. I want African Americans to have all sorts of opportunity. I think I know how to settle this liquid. Wait, wait, everybody. This. I think we have to settle this in Virginia. Is it we we do a moonwalking competition between the governor and Lieutenant governor who's better. Right. I mean after all this how this got started. Apparently, according to the governor, Arthur Meena, I saw the video after you play the audio yesterday on the show and you're right. He was looking around for room. The governor was about he was going to do the moonwalk if his wife, and again in that case, the only person with any common sense at that press conference was his wife. I mean, his wife, basically, you know, gave him that. I'll you know. I'll I'll kill you. If you do this look. You you've had that look, right? I have that look every day for my wife. I totally understand that. I live that look what are you talking about? But literally she saved his attempt to try and and hang on. Because this this governor guy Northam, I haven't really followed what's going on in the Old Dominion, but it was he behind trying to take the confederate statues down everything. I mean, he's all in favor of that stuff. Okay. So he's been in favor of that. While at the same time he was doing what he was doing back in nineteen Eighty-four. I guess exactly. Okay. Gotcha. Hanging out with a guy in a Klan outfit. Exact. Okay. Gotcha. Okay. Just wanted to check on that. It's very confusing politics today. Trying to keep up with all of this. We'll be right back. "I'd have to look into it as far as the logistics of that happening. But shouldn't it be the case? Anyway, Winnipeg's dot their team back. Let's forget about Atlanta. No offense to their fans. But that team has done. Nobody seemed overly interested in. Anyway, I called a couple of games they're eight thousand fans in the building and five thousand of ranger fans. That's just a fact so I would like to see that. But you don't see it necessarily with the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers in the NFL still are part of Tennessee's history. Even though Houston did get a team back in the Texans. But they didn't take the Orlando took the Texans name. So that's a little bit different my head spinning right now. But Ricky, you're absolutely right. If the coyotes moved to Houston than Winnipeg should get the coyotes history. Absolutely, Tom, where's the love for Mitch Monir at the all star game. He's not even a bailable to vote for the last man in what else do you think? Who who else? Do you think that's not? Well, I guess that. Kreider snubbed should be the last man vote for the Rangers not match to Carello ridiculous. Okay. Kabul. Mary got snubbed he should be in the all star game. But he's at least got a chance to get into the last vote Patrick line either. Same thing has a chance again of last Jeff Skinner has a chance to get into the last vote. However, you only pick one guy from each of the divisions. So you can't pick multiple guys from each division. So that's gonna make it difficult for mourner to get in like if you want if you even have more energy was there, if if Skinner gets the vote will then that's going to put an end to anybody getting in from that division looking at the divisions. Now trying to get it all together here you were the division in question. We're talking about is the Atlantic Division. All right. So Morgan Riley who was not a bad selection for Toronto, man. The Leafs are just Laden with talent. That's the problem. I probably would have martyr heteronomy, but Riley's had a great year. He's also leading all defensemen in scoring at least the last I checked, but if you've oats Skinner in will then Briley can't go in because you only get one vote one guy from the division. So that puts you know Skinner in buffalo. Maybe it makes it difficult. You know, the metropolitan division Palmeri deserves to be in the in the in the all star game representing the New Jersey Devils, not Taylor hall, but he's not going to have a chance to get voted in Tang in Pittsburgh or Backstrom in Washington is definitely going to get the Don why is land is Scott getting vote, and he was on the best line in the NHL saying there were Patrick line. It does get frustrating. Even though I keep saying, I don't care. It does get frustrating. Jim says when is Chris tangoing to get the respect he deserves? It's a great question. I was thinking about this and talking about what David only one was calling the game the other night. Pittsburgh's got so much talent. It's easy to get lost. Right. Like, you feel bad for getting Malcolm have Malcolm's on any other team. He's their best player and he's getting his do. But he's on the same team is Sidney Crosby. So Sydney's going to get all the credit Sydney is going to get all the love Sydney's going to get all the conversation. He's got to be the second best team. He's one of the top five players in the league's not even the best player in his own team. Then you look at Phil kessel Phil Kessels a tremendous player all year about him is trade. Rumors. All right. And then you've got crystal Tang who sees the ice better than maybe any defenseman in the league? All right guys got a tremendous shot. Tremendous speed. You don't talk about why. Because you too busy talking about Crosby Malcolm castle. You know, the goaltending situation. It's amazing. Did you can get lost their in Pittsburgh with all the firepower and all the star power. But anybody who's anybody understands the importance of crisslow Tang on that team. He's by far their best defenceman, and he gives them a chance to win every single night on that blue line, which is something a lot of teams don't have..

"houston oilers" Discussed on Pardon My Take

"Here. He is Danny Woodhead anathema something completely different. Okay. We now. Welcome on one of our favorite recurring guests it is Danny Woodhead he is calling in because we have some playoff matchups for some teams that he played for this weekend. I want to actually start with a question that might sound like a dumb question. But you can you could tell me it's dumb question. But I just wanna I wanna ask everyone always talks about playoff speed. And how different it is going from the regular season to the playoffs. Now. This is my Chris Farley part is that true. You know, what I'd say it is there there's a little bit. There's just a I don't know what it is. Maybe it's because you lose go home. And I know some guys like that you're going to go home. But I would say, yeah. Definitely definitely is. Because the the likelihood of you played another game isn't very high. So is there there's a little? Take a couple of games to get used to that. Or like when you first start in the playoffs and your first game. Where like, yeah. Now, everybody's at Danny speed. Now, I need to step it up two extra Danny? Yeah. I think that that's probably what it was. I would say that's that's probably the most accurate. Okay. Nice. First before we get into the games. I want to find out. How are you doing? How's your sees? We haven't talked into what? Yeah. I know. It's been a little bit of doing pretty good. Actually, I I've been trying to do my best on getting better video games. And. And I die tears, but that's only half time of the video games. Does that make sense a little too K bad and a little bit right now. Okay. Squad. Oh, gosh. Whoever I care everybody in because I changed them to the Houston. Oilers throw vice? Nice. I I like to honor tradition. You know? Yeah. Those are some of the best uniform. Those those may be blue Houston early. Jeff Fisher coach. Yeah. Have you been watching red zone? Is this your introduction red zone? I don't know. Definitely not definitely not. So you just watch red zone. No. I never watched red zone. Why? I just so I never like, I don't mind it fine. But I would usually watch games. I just it was it was hard for me to watch just red zone. Okay. That Batum am. I just not. No, just not maybe I'm not a very season fan. No. I think that's we'll get there. Eventually. So now you played fancy football for the first time this season. Once you get like six teams going and you get almost half gets real deep in your veins, then you'll need the red zone. I agree with you. I've actually come on the other side like I love red zone forever. And I am now getting to the point where I'm getting tired of red zone. But there are moments where red zone it's more like anxiety because they will flip to a different game. And I'll be waiting for an eighty yard touchdown. It'd be like three yard run. And so it's almost it's almost like I'm like Pavlov's dogs. When Scott Hanson says now, let's go here. I'm ready for touchdown. And then I just sit there with dry mouth being like, where's my treat? Oh, I would say that that makes a whole lot of sense. Yeah. I wouldn't say so so jumping into this week. And this is The Danny Woodhead slash Eric weta bowl on was it the early game on Sunday. Yes. Yeah. The chargers. And the ravens you guys played for both teams. First of all who are you rooting for? You don't from an ask me that the other day. I don't I it's tough because I'm good buddies with Philip and I'm getting a little. They're they're probably to my closer friends that I've played with the league. And I would say that it's hard one because I also know how well was treated towards the end, you know, and and in the so I think sometimes I'm like, maybe the ravens but good buddies. Honestly, I just wanna see kinda sucks to they could've played the SEC championship in one of them got to the Super Bowl. I know yesterday. Like looking for me to. Yeah. No your buddies to do. Well. Want me to be pissed at the chargers which off they're like, I forgot years there. So I mean, I could be mad at Baltimore too. Right..
