Being I take I take instructions well as you just heard what it's all about so the Houston Chronicle is GonNa join us from Houston before he takes off he's going to be at the London game as well Texans Jaguars this weekend our poll question greatest games and performance ever you have to say yeah eight strikeouts to walks seven hits scattered you scatter scatter them a prediction based on the first two weeks of the season I will give out the Larry Ob later on real overreaction I mean hey where reacted to another warriors blowout victories from the Larry Francis O'Brien trophy yeah became an pick the clock was running so the punt team came out and purposefully false started to stop the clock and that's when Baker came perfect for you today Chris what do you have this just happened not too long ago and Cleveland Ohio Brown's broncos this week Baker Mayfield sake that everybody sees that and they feel that in the same way that he's got he had his finger on the pulse of the Locker Room last year when he gave the heisman trophy to Hugh Jackson Not at Twenty Twenty Honda Civic Lineup with the always fun civic sedan that Sporty Civic Coupe and the spacious civic hatchback there's something for every style so hadn't your local Honda dealer and find the not a good look and they got a game you know like we've talked about the game they can win this week against the team he's been benched veteran quarter daddy throughout right there two percent change at the most think nationals tonight and it was one year ago today since we're on the subject of anniversaries one year one year on the field and you know and and every single moment he had he had the pulse of the locker room maybe you know he has it right here I mean come on and so it's it's a bad look forum it's it it it he has done a good job of bottling that that inner voice that I think is there he just the quiet part was just set out loud and I have no idea if there's a beef or a history with whoever it so was that about the pong team coming on after what it sounds like that's what it sounds let's get to Chris Brown's News Update Gopher hit it please Mike del Tufo now talk but with a special live report rock men with the news brought to you leadoff Jeff do he blouse her md Oh all right Mattie was the reliever Alejandro opinion back on the field and then I guess the unhappy with the play call because they immediately word at least Baker Mayfield haters in the meteoric and beat me here crazy business adams all dangled Jeremiah now number one who does know Joe Douglas Very well says backer a he has an injury and they're starting a rookie Brown's defendant should handle this game for one thousand percent the browns defense should handle his game form got to be here in New York I was told yesterday by my agent that the GM then went behind my back and shopped me around two teams even after I asked him to day those weren't players that we were shopping. You know where I'm from and what I was taught is when a team calls you you should always listen to what they have to say so meeting with the media and at interesting do we know what the subject what the context is Joan I literally just saw someone tweet that Baker has walked out of his I've heard to he wants out of there I'll say it and he wants to go to douse and that's going to be sitting there now for for at least the next four the availability and we rushed to find the clip. We'll see what do we got the apples I just told you the clock is running he's talking to and he had no respect to walk away is just not the way to handle it it's that simple frustration and I can only hope for his spoken to Joe yet but he heard Joe had to say Nah I you know it's my job is what I've been taught to do is to calls all filled day with us oh wait a minute they already are like literally as I'm talking who it is not that's just that is any reports of me asking to be traded from the New York jets are completely false followed up at the end of the week last week sat down with the GM and coach Gaze told them if you want to give them the ball back no you don't play you don't know cleaning happy happy with point Oh that's what we did that's what we did in but listened repeatedly is I think what Jamal Adams point is I don't know if you know I mean Jamal bargaining agreement still allows back tobacco franchise tax and hopefully by then they can figure out how to win WanNa stay because there's no better place than New York's ready go forward what else do you ever the jet stuff from yesterday obviously all the rumors about guys on the block and then you know nothing ended up happening Jamal Adams to twitter yesterday and he basically you we have Joe's comments here's with Joe had to say on the players that were leaked out to so it's odd he's with the team he passes physical and we'll see from they're not sure if he's GonNa play it all the season really really bizarre Vance for patients everyone understanding crosses the building winning program building winning organization yes you got it you're still sticking by I said yesterday I like it I think it's very reasonable to think that they can rattle off some wins here but not six people think is off of a week where even Adam gays admitted today he didn't get didn't give belt nearly enough touches I think Lebanon's can have a huge week in Miami ready to win championships and respect everybody else and then when the other guys rumored to be moved yesterday where the on bell posted a video on on twitter asking the ears that's the next time he faces Dallas and the jets have four years of control left they got that next year fifth year option and if the collected and he should go talk to Jamal Adams and say it's a business that guy knows more than he should talk to Jamal Adams and sit him down all right sir today he followed that up with he is in the building but not currently on the practice field while the team had believed he would be at practice met the media in his locker rooms afternoon Trade Cincinnati of quarterbacks yesterday on his birthday and frustrated with the timing of this whole thing Ramsey's chiropractor that's pretty good that's pretty good Speaking of that dolphins jets matchup Brian Four is dolphins head coach said Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to start and remain the uh-huh ended up not getting traded yesterday the Washington redskins he did show up Ian rapoport saying he passed his physical and the belief in the redskins building is that he'll be at practice I think that's an unfortunate thing I mean it happened three hours before the trade deadline you know it's I wish it would have at least the jets turn it over because Darnold isn't being protected nearly as well as he needs to be I feel for Khalil Man Yeah came into retirement for this no chance all right any go to Joe Jalen Ramsey is back dr by the way that should be maybe it's just not a good look Meteo Jesus don't see quarterbacks you know going back and forth and just wall now Dan walk out okay let's go to common though Erica they probably would have turned around I think I speak for every steeler fan when I say where did that come from the even be said I wanted to bench what do you think I what someone was GonNa you think the bengals would trade any hey thanks for all these years of service and you'll get benched on your birthday when you're thirty two maybe India will help out with the NFL PA and I think they'll douglas joining up tremendous job trying to get this turnaround artist we'll get the ship's sailing in the right direction but Ati everybody has some patients it is NFL history today courtesy of Herm Edwards role tip history never know this is a business and everybody should get should get there's when they can I believe Andy Dalton after all those years benched starter because he gives them the best chance to wish damn does they don't have any wins I'm telling you what the jets need to do is tank all right lasting it's a jets team this week October thirtieth stalwart

"Mary Webster's Day for June nineteen. Today's word is stalwart, spelled S. T. A. L. W. A. RT stalwart is an adjective that means marked by outstanding strength and vigour of body, mind or spirit. Here's the word used in a sentence from the Houston Chronicle by Gary Clark. But female birds make stalwart mothers after all there is is the job of nest making for example, a female northern cardinal collects nesting material twigs, leaves grasses and sundry fibers, the bird choose on twigs with her beak to make them pliable her feet, then shove the bendable twigs into an open cup shape, wedged against a fork of limbs in Bush or tree, finally the bird carpets, the nest interior with leaves and grasses. Sometime in the fifteenth century, English speakers began to use the word stalwart in place of the older form. Stallworth spelled S. T. A. L. W. O. R. T.. H.. Although Stallworth is now archaic. It laid the groundwork for today's meaning of stalwart. During the twelfth century, forms of Stallworth began to be used to describe strongly built people or animals, a meaning stalwart carries it also came to be used as an adjective for people who showed bravery or courage, likewise, a meaning passed onto stalwart so in a way stalwart has been serviceable in keeping the spirit of Stallworth alive. This character of stalwart is true also to its roots. Stallworth came from the old English. Word meaning serviceable, which in turn is thought to come from terms meaning foundation and worth. E146 LC37 Are you busy or productive?

"Welcome to the textile show. Where we are dedicated to making you a better text seller sharing tried-and-true sales strategies and answering your questions weekly off. What's up, Brian? Hey, Bobby getting my watch this popped up a call. I have another meeting at 30 minutes. So we'll make this 1:22 ish. Sounds good. Here we go home. What's up, Brian? Hey Bobby, where we will start that over. There's the long Gap threw me off well in sped up again. Yeah. What's up, Brian? Hey Bobby. Here. We are we are in another listeners choice. And this one is brought to you by me and my newspaper reading oddly enough. I found this article business section of the Houston Chronicle our major newspaper on the weekend last weekend still get the Sunday paper. I guess delivered to the house and the article was titled. Are you busy or productive and man I have about 30 people. I want to send that article to and have them read it because I have a lot of people around me that are busy all the time ma'am busy. You don't you don't think that'd be a little passive-aggressive. That would be probably the last one that would be that would be exactly probably what they expected in some cases but yes, that would be perfect. So I didn't do that. But I hope they all listen to this show today and put themselves in that that 30 categories of people that I know they should read this article all in all I think wage. I think it's it goes to a lot of what we talk about regularly on the show right average are the people that look and seem busy above-average are the people that are productive and getting stuff done. Right? How long have you ever ever known somebody that was super busy but I absolutely got nothing accomplished. Yeah. These are typically the same people. Well, I don't maybe it's not the same people but it's it's the same category of people that say I'm going to work smarter and not harder and it's kind of the platitude, you know, that's kind of like I don't you just do both but yes it kind of to me. I kind of put those people in the same category even though they're different personalities. I put in the same category. Yeah, so I'm hearing you say and I think I've completely believe you that if someone says I'm going to work harder or work smarter not harder. That's probably a person should read listen to this episode a couple of times because in reality I have I am not short of things to do today. I I have jokingly told my wife lately. I am more overwhelming than I've ever been because I've got so much going on and in the same breath. I'll tell her I absolutely love it. I got so much stuff going on but similar to this article, I read an article long time ago said every executive or someone who's leading a team of people probably has three hundred hours of undone work that they need to get done. And the reality is we're never going to get all that done. So I could busily focus on all those tasks and then not really accomplish things to grow the flight school make a big impact in my new role at Acuity or one of the two podcasts that I'm hosting right now the Dead I could just be busy all the time and no episodes. We get published no money would get made and no flights would be had and that would be terrible. So the the important stuff gets focused on in the productivity happens because I think the three things that we're going to talk about today, right? I think my productivity equals Effectiveness. I think I prioritize my day off. I don't always get to what I wanted to get too. But we did a show a long time ago about winning the day you might go back and listen to that one too. And then I think I do reflect on where I spent my time in a lot of days that I lose the day meaning I write down three things and I just want to get these three things done and I don't get any of those three things done at the end of the day I go back and I know where I spend my time and I'm like that was better like I impacted these people I touched this this deal that moved forward that I didn't know was going to move forward. I feel better and then the days that I lose and off. Back in and I didn't do anything really productive. I kind of hold myself accountable and make tomorrow better. So we're really going to talk about three things as it relates to are you busy or productive? We're going to talk about truly how to be effective or not just productive but how to make that production effective. We're going to talk about prioritizing your day. And then where you spend your time Brian. I know you have more balls in the air probably than I do and and leading multiple groups of people towards success right now and and also have a podcast and also have kids and also have a wife and also have your own fitness goals and stuff off. What do you hear when you just right off the top think about being busy or productive? I think the you gotta it's all about and I know we'll talk we'll talk about some of the page takes around knowing where to spend your time and how to prioritize your day. But I think it's just waking up every morning or being prepared the night before with like what are the crucial things that I must accomplish and as a dog A as a tech seller first, you know the first thing you should be waking up every morning and thinking about is how do I Advance the steel forward? How do I Advance my pipeline because as we talked about on our last lesson Choice the the only measurement of success in textiles is the ability to close business and the only way to close business is to Advanced Pipeline. And if you're if you're waking up thinking about anything, other than that, you will be unsuccessful. You will burn time being busy and doing things but not the things that actually matter I liked it and that's really the first page first part of this show here really is productivity equals Effectiveness, and we're in Texas sales and it's so almost comical when I talked to people and they think their job is something other than being active towards increasing the pipeline or closing business. That's our only job. Yes. We might occasionally work on a marketing plan or a marketing event or inviting attendees to Market wage. Events or whatever else but you're not a marketer. You are a sales person and they show notes Here. I put that if you are a roofer Effectiveness is probably measured by how may singles you can put on that new roof? It probably has nothing to do with things that don't have anything to do with that roof. And we're pretty clear on that roofer equals more roof better roofs, and I can't confirm as the guy who owns a roofing company he can confirm but for some reason a sales person gets a pass on selling let's talk about that one more time roofer is supposed to put shingles on a roof and for some reason sellers don't have to always be selling. It's just not a correlation a matches up so really and truly think about how are you effective in your role as a tech seller? I spend a lot of time with my son and golf right now, right he we talked about The game a lot and he wants to be a better golfer and I'm like, we only have to work on one thing and and he fights me on this all the time, but we have to find a way to take fewer Strokes that's odd that is productivity and golf that is Effectiveness. So if he goes and hits a bucket of balls and they all go sideways, he's not helping himself to hit fewer strokes and if you play golf at all, you'd know the right answer in the right answers to focus on short game, but for some reason my son still wants to go work on his driver every day when we go to the golf course, and I'm like that's not going to help us take off Strokes. So to be more effective. I've got to find a way with with me and his coach to have him work on the things that will make him hit fewer strokes. And so we we talked about sales. Brian nailed it before we even started this section. It is about Pipeline and deal movement Pipeline and deal movement. And to me when I'm coaching sales reps pipeline is is going to be created Samsung. Only based on your activity, you're either picking up the phone calling people being creative on ways that you interact with those people through Partners or something, but you're generating that pipeline through activity and then the deal movement in a professional sales and moving deals through the funnel because you're in control and command of those deals. Bobby what do you what do you see gets in the way what distracts people from from doing those things if it's as simple as finding new pipeline moving deals forward and of course like wage in the throes of a deal and throws of negotiation that's it's easy to be focused during that time because you kind of can see the Finish Line. What do you see kind of get some people's way training expense reports off. These are all necessary evils. You got to do these things. Like what do you think you'd get some people's way those things are on the list of what getting people's way but I'm still readily shocked at those things get in people's way because I am totally it's like anything else. I hate the expenses as much as anybody else does and probably lose some money because I hate him so much but when it's time to do expenses probably a month late since I'm in some cases I sit down normally at 10 or 11:00 at night and I do my expenses. I do not and I will not ever work on my expense report at 10 a.m. On a Tuesday morning. Let's crazy. Customers are in play Tuesday 10 a.m. So it shouldn't affect my selling but it's something that I have to do and it's done out of business hours, but you're right. I mean, I think people do those things. I've seen once you get in people's ways as silly as that sounds you know, how many techs sales reps take a 30-minute lunch none very rarely. They probably took a 2-hour lunch. I joke with some tech sellers who want to be better that come to me and want some coaching and I I literally tell them you get to work at 10 a.m. You go home at 2:00 and you take a for our lunch. Like what are you expecting it? You don't sell you're not selling anything. So it is that it is that distraction that is created by what else call add, right? So something is happening to where they they focus over here instead of focusing on the thing a hand and they've got a million excuses around job. But the other one I would say in this in this realm is planning. So people can get really look really busy on creating call plans Credit customer list off had a coaching student over the last six months who we we had major hurdles to get him past this planning. We I gotta wake up and run this report and get this list and I was like man screw that off get one list Saturday morning pull this four hundred customers and don't do anything next week, but starting to call those customers because the planning part was just sucking his day dry and dead. We we literally flipped that to the weekend the work was on the weekend pull that list. Then we started calling customers and the benefit of it being on the weekend or the reason I liked that is because you're not near want to burn up and waste a bunch of time on a Saturday. You're going to want to get it done in in whether it's an expense report doing some planning taking a training if you can set a very finite time to finish that rather than saying like two years. I'm going to do my expense report. It's no I'm doing my expense report from 7 to 7:30 a.m. Like I'm going to be done at 7:30 a.m. And if I'm if you don't want to work on a Saturday, then you off then the planning needs to get done before hours and you set a time to do it and you get it done. But if you do it, but regardless if you do it on the weekends, you know, you're not going to burn extra time being wasteful and not thoughtful about that process. You're going to get it done and and well so that you can get back to your Saturday. Yeah, that's really the answer here productivity on that setting and a Saturday morning will equal Effectiveness cuz you will get it done. Yes, that won't be something that long is over four or five hours. The next one was prioritize your day with tuck with covered this topic in a number of scenarios, but I think it does start by getting a healthy breakfast in your body early exercise meditating whatever you choose to do and then whether you use a tool like Trello Which is popular for both of us or a paper tool of some sort. I still use a bunch of Post-it notes. I'm looking around my desk wage. Coming the less than 15 that I like to write down. So I get them done before I leave today and I just I know that my day is is prioritized because I did it and I'd be good and for me, it's just kind of it's it's an ever-evolving process to stay prioritized where I move things up and down and Trello and I just wide these notes up and throw them away and I never think about them again. I just know that I'm always being I'm always prioritizing my day. So you have to find a way to do that. And for me, I use Trello to you mentioned that but the way I've got organized is that for the different business lines and things that I'm involved in those each have a list and then there are things that I must accomplish on a day today as a Friday and there are things I must accomplish on this Friday before I head out of town with my son today. And so I've got those three or four things listed out and those are my between meetings. Those are my focus one hundred percent. There's no ambiguity wage. Exactly what I need to do today for it to be a successful day and Bobby see your point when the day and so curious but what happens if you don't get those three things done. There are some that are that just have to get done. And so I'm not going until I do but it's really important for me to spend the time with my son this weekend. I'm so fortunate that I will just I will allow it to slip but the things that are like crucial they just don't slip I just I've organized my day in a way to do it. Now. Let's say an emergency comes up. I can't plan for that emergency. But I am planning on leaving. Today but this is just a Bobby was a random Tuesday, right? And then I did not have a family commitment. I'd stay until I got done. Yeah, I think that's what I was trying to get you say is that doesn't happen. Like I just don't you know, if I say, I'm going to get done I get it done and I think it's just so many people that are busy people who have a long list who just think their list can never get done and they just don't get stuff done. Like I am told and promised things by people all the time. Yes, I saw your email. I told you I proof read it. I know it's been three days. I know I read it. I didn't reply to you. Let me I'll get that done today and then it doesn't get done and it doesn't get done and it doesn't need and I'm like did we have other important stuff that we were now we didn't like what are you working on like stop go do that and and that that stuff drives me insane those people that do that are super busy and they're not productive in maybe if they're doing that to you. Are they doing that to customers? Oh, yes for sure. They are and you don't think that's off a customer crazy. It's not that you gotta be there after further beck and call but balls are getting drops those people drop balls. They do drop balls. You know what they drop. They have 3,000 unread emails in their inbox. I don't know what they have and haven't even read yet to get done and it's such a blur that they're just busy looking at their inbox all the time like there is no Clarity to what time Next so try to win the day go listen to the other show by winning the day it is about priorities, but it is more still about being productive not busy night and I am in I am in box zero kind of guy that you don't have to be an inbox zero person to be productive. However, you do have to walk for an email sent last Thursday at 9 a.m. That has a deliverable do next Friday. You have to have some way of of measuring your tracking towards progress there and if I've taught my kids nothing as mine certainly as my my high school son that I guess prepared to go to college here in the next couple of years it is I give him all the time. I give him commitments. I need you to have this done by next Friday and he has an app on his phone. And so I've taught him this early he has an app on his phone now that he whenever I'd say I don't care when you do it off. Want the the one or the entryway blown off don't care when you do it, but it needs to be done before X date or X time. I give them these things all the time to to coach him in being a more thoughtful prepared person. Yeah, it's something that we don't educate in school. My son's actually in a business management class and he's like, why don't we learn all this all the time and not dead what year Columbus came across the water? Like I don't understand. So all those life lessons in that stuff is very powerful for these young men and women we talked about wage today. And when I when I don't think I won the day I do spend time reflecting or I or I get here early in the morning and I look back in my notes and what I did and what I didn't do and I I either beat myself up to figure out how to fix that problem. Like you said emergencies happen and things break around here and they need attention and I gotta give give them a attention, but normally I kind of have like you do one more time. Things that I'm going to get done and I got those done last night about 12:10 a.m. Cuz I wasn't going to go to bed till I got those things done yesterday, but you have to know where you'll spend your time. And really I think now I reflect on my jobs yesterday had a bunch of behind the prop podcast stuff. It had a bunch of Acuity stuff off and a customer stuff with Acuity and then non-customer stuff with Acuity and then I had to write a show for today cuz we both committed to writing a show that we were in a record today. And then I had a ton of fly school stuff that I had to do as well. Never mind being present at dinner with my family and taking care of my son helping him with his homework and I'm doing my best to stay engaged while I was talking to my wife about her day and what was going on right? It's not easy, but I know all of those things I did I did wrong. Best to do the right thing. Oh and I wouldn't visit my mom who's in a nursing home, which was as painful as it is for me to say it was the last thing I really needed to be doing but at the same time I knew how important was I went and did that and it got the time to write and so that's what put me into midnight for my other two dues because I I think I prioritize those things in real time and how long it takes focus and determination in some of those instances to do it. And as my son wants to be very good at golf. I always try to remind him Pros. Do things they don't like to do when they don't want to do them, right? And so they step up, you know athletes like you you run when you don't want to run I don't run when I don't want to run so I'm sure than you and that's just what it's going to be but Pros better golfers great College golfers, they hit balls they chip and they put when they don't want to Chip and Putt and I think what makes me a good and business job. And go to what I do is I do what I don't want to do when I don't want to do it because I know it's important and I'm going to get it done and that's what's made me successful. I think I think what's also made you successful in this become this goes with having a better batting average over time. Is that because you've got a lot of things going on, you know, you have learned over time what things move the needle which things do produce results in those in the other things just fall off the list and like we've talked about it all the time Bobby we talked about we've you know of a plan for this or playing for that and then it doesn't get baptized in in the back of our minds. We know you know what it probably wasn't the best Focus for a time and that month and that half-year point. And so I think that's batting average thing you get better and better at it took the more, you know, what moves the needle no doubt and if you're listening to show you realize if you're a fat listening you realize we missed a couple of weeks and we hated but we met Collect a decision that it wasn't the most productive thing for us in our lists. You know, we still don't get paid for this show we love doing it. But it it was a very proactive decision that we may need to skip a couple of weeks because it wasn't the most high priority item on our list to get a a couple of shows recorded and get him out there and we've probably made mistakes in the past the putting it in front of other important things because we didn't want to miss and at the end of the day like missing didn't end the world for anybody. Maybe I hope deep. All right. So with that package or wrap this week up to think about it today tomorrow next week come back and listen to the show. Are you busy or are you productive and what's the big difference to you? And how do you make that difference something that sticks for you? And the work that you do we know average reps are just busy and we know above-average reps are both productive and effective ask yourself that question when you wake up tomorrow. What's the going wage? Busy or productive averages the enemy don't be average average sucks people. Thanks for listening to the tech social. Thanks everyone. "The eight seven in Houston. I'm Eddie Robinson well in about an hour from now, polls will be open for early voting in Texas more than two point, four million people are already registered to vote here in Harris County the Houston Chronicle reports that total has gone up by about two hundred, thirty, four, thousand people since twenty sixteen election officials expect record turn out this year you can find polling locations and wait times at Harris? votes. Dot Org. In other news Fort Bend County's law enforcement officers could soon all wear body cameras as flurry Martin reports a new committee is working on a countywide policy. Some law enforcement agencies in Fort Bend County already have body cameras, but the goal is to all of them and create one policy for the whole county for bend officials say they plan to take advantage of a matching grant for body cameras the Texas legislature created five years ago. But why did it take so long Houston in Harris County. For example, have had body camera. Programs for some years now, Kevin Buckler, criminal justice professor at the University of Houston downtown. He says, there could be several reasons for the delay. There are some reporting requirements that are tied to that state brandt that may serve as kind of a deterrent to some departments afford Ben County spokesperson says there had been conversations to pursue the state grant before, but it got new urgency with the death of George Floyd and other police shootings. This year I'm Florian Martin in Houston new data from the episcopal health. Foundation show how covert. Has. Caused gaps in healthcare in Texas our health reporter Sara will earn explains how the pandemic has altered the landscape for preventive medicine and telemedicine thirty, five percent of Texans reports skipping or postpone medical care this year, this included yearly checkups, cancer screenings, and. For Kids. These delays were more common among wealthier households with higher levels of education and one reason for this the report says is because this population is more likely to get preventative care in the first place. Accessing telemedicine has also been a challenge for many Texans thirty five percent said, they couldn't access these resources poor. Texans with less education weren't as likely to benefit from telehealth because they don't have a device with Internet access. Looking ahead, the majority of Texans nearly sixty percent believed that life will not return back to normal for at least six months if not longer. I'm Sarah will earn Houston meanwhile fewer Texans. Say they get a corona virus vaccine compared to earlier this year a poll from the Texas Politics Project at ut found in June fifty nine percent of Texan surveyed said they would get a vaccine when one becomes available. Now just forty three percent say they would the percentage of people who said, no they would not get a vaccine increased from twenty one percent to thirty six percent from June October. The poll shows about forty percent think that a vaccine will be available for it's proven to be safe and effective. From wandry I'm David Brown in this business wars daily on this Wednesday July ninth Microsoft. Customers will no longer have a dedicated physical space to try out the company's latest technology and get help with their devices. Microsoft has announced that it's closing all but four of its stores. That's roughly eighty storefronts going dark. The company plans to redesign flagship locations in new. York City London Sydney and Redmond Washington. Washington into experience centers that don't sell products. The technology giant entered the brick and mortar retailer, Rena, in two, thousand, nine to compete with Apple's popular stores and several locations Microsoft even went so far as to build a flagship store near Apple's iconic glass cube in Manhattan, but those shops never attained the popularity that its rival enjoyed now the company will support customers through its digital storefronts like. Dot Com stores on xbox and windows. It also use new services like one on one video chat, support, online tutorial videos and virtual workshops. In the era of covid nineteen, it's hard to imagine a worse scenario than a store. Mostly designed for a hands experience, so if Microsoft was thinking about ditching storefronts before the pandemic may have accelerated that choice, but fans of the stores like that. The retail location sold systems that were mostly free of bloat. Wear the Houston Chronicle reports blow wears that unnecessary software often found on machines sold in mass market retail locations like best buy. Microsoft's cleaner machines just ran faster, but once the pandemic hit Microsoft shifted its retail teams to serve customers remotely, and it worked in a statement Microsoft said that it has trained and supported hundreds of thousands of customers, remotely retail employees will transition to remote sales and support working both at home and at Microsoft headquarters, but the closures may have come a bit too soon for Microsoft. Now it's all good in the hood two days kicking off the n._f._l. One hundred hundred season packers bears. I'm not talking full sentences on that excited all yes now <hes>. Hey everybody nobody i'm excited. It's a tuesday to a day. I got this show and then tonight on the n._f._l. Network at nine eastern time my n._f._l. Game day morning friends and on will be hanging out for the season preview show <hes> tonight. I won't be making my super bowl pick but because you take in this show and this show has my name on it. I'm gonna give that suppo pick tonight. Got it. I've got it spent a lot of time. Cultivating this caper okay use the more the wiegmann phrase from goodfellas with my money and <hes> and i thought about it. I've ruminated about it. I'm gonna give it out later on in the second hour. After we speak to john maclean i wanna ask john maclean of the houston chronicle all about out this and <hes> you know because there's lots to talk about john. Maclean because houston was in front and center. We're all looking at dallas to make some football football news this weekend but pen in that for a second but the houston texans. I mean absolutely shook up the n._f._l. World this weekend with not one but two trades trades flat out trades not like we're picking up somebody else's players that get cut to everybody get down on the final fifty three trades like monster trades like giving away an absurd number of draft picks to bring an actual top notch pro bowl caliber player type trades and trading away a first overall selection to seattle cloudy cloudy is now going to rush the passer passer in the national football conference western division clowney is going to go try and hunt down golf and james g and cuyler murray twice a year clowney is as good a pass rusher as many okay and certainly replaces frank clark in where he's going to be rushing from <hes> a natural position as opposed to what he has been doing in in houston and seattle. I mean kudos to them. They got this guy cents. On the dollar. Former first round draft choice who is in the prime of his career number one overall draft choice in the prime of his career and all they had due to give him get him is a third round pick and cough up jacob martin and barca's mingo when the all time is all time great name all time i and how many times this guy been trading yeah and that's it and cloudy scientists franchise tender fifteen million bucks. They don't eat. They don't pay seven million of it. They tell houston you pay half of it and houston says okay okay so i love this for seattle love it and for houston i guess they get this thing handled before the end of the training camp season before they preseason so you know before we play games and they get this thing off their plate and they can focus on the task at hand which is trying to win games on offense. I guess because they the reason why i chose the colts to win the a._f._c. South on friday show is because i didn't like what was is going on the offensive line for houston and now they got laremy tunsil and a they they get this kid who is i think by all accounts of all scouts and talent evaluators best young left tackle in the game and kenny stills can now go to houston and take the top of the offense and the top of the defense off with the shawn watson. They're gonna send will fuller and him out deep good lucks sop and those guys with the andre hopkins running around all over the place they do pick up carlos hyde who you could see that a mile away that he wasn't a kansas city chief certainly when they pick up the shawn mccoy over the weekend so offensively. I like what this means for houston. In two thousand in nineteen does shawn watson was beat up like crazy last year we assume this will lessen many of the blows or prevent vent them period from happening and all they gave up for for this because again. Kenny stills was available because i guess stephen ross wanted them out and blah. Brian floors is making a statement that you can't call out the owner for what sure appears to be tough for me to say for a michigan man like a totally hypocritical stance on social issues and sending him out and what is you give up okay. Let's see two first round picks. Yes what what really a two thousand twenty first and a two thousand twenty one first round pick ben what a second to write wasn't a second sound so all my gosh seems like a lot what no holy heck. Is that all about yeah. I know you need to fill the left tackle position and i know you might need some offensive help too but what now they bill o'brien held out for that fourth in six round picks back. Thank goodness so here's the deal to as look ah this for two thousand nineteen. Let's roll cloudy wasn't coming anyway right and now you got the left. Tackle position handled with one of the best young players that is <music> out there at the position stills is added to this wide receiver group that can really do some work for shawn watson duke johnson with carlos hyde okay. I'm still sticking with the colts to win the division. I'm still going to do it just because i did. It and i'm also fully confident in percent who signed nice contract extension in his abilities and i'm going to go to work with the colts still texans. I think have now put put themselves in a position for a wildcard spot or the division. Obviously i'm telling you what man to make these deals though for tunsil and they have a fifth year option on them but to not sign him long-term before you even say to miami. I'm gonna give you two first rounders. Okay the not even sign him long-term. Give up that much to miami. You're now telling this kid and his agent. Hey hold us up for for everything where worth because we have put the capital of draft capital we have we have just we have thrown the draft capital out the window so you know we're going to have to resign you so whoever the highest paid tacklers in the league tonsils gonna make more than that guy by and by the way i if i'm houston i do it. The first second i have to put a pin in that in a second and cloudy. How do you trade trade clowning now. After the deadline where they or any new team he sent to cannot make a long term deal with cloudy after july fifteenth. You're not allowed to make a fr- a long term deal with a franchise tag player. That's the rule rule so if you're going to trade cloudy if you're if you're going to be done with him do it before july fifteenth so you can get back more than just a third round pick and two other players. I somebody of his talent where pass rushing is at a premium in the national football. How do you do that because seattle's like hey look. Check the date. It's labor day weekend and we can't sign them long term so here's a third and you know what you gotta pay half his salary. What a deal for seattle crazy crazy day. I mean that's like john. Schneider should be general manager that you're already offer something like that and bill o'brien is the general manager there in houston right now. 'cause we all know oh brian gang got the gate in the middle of the spring in a very bizarre timed firing and he's the guy there and this is what point you know case in point. Do not make your coach. The general manager because the coach has a say that normal general manager would have to overrule overrule depending on the power structure or basically say hey look. I know we need to win now or we should win now but look we can't give away first round picks like this for a left tackle that we haven't paid yet. John mcleans going to join us in the show from houston. Chris carter is is gonna be. I up in about ten minutes time and again. We mentioned it last week to with the preseason being essentially non existent existent this year. It's tough to figure out who's going to be what aaron rodgers is on the show friday. We have no idea what the heck they're gonna look like green bay zero. We have no idea what they're going to look like. We have no idea in a way what minnesota's gonna look like we. I'm assuming they're gonna be better with gary. Kubiak the new offensive offensive guru there. What are the forty niners. Gonna look like what are what are. What are the jaguars gonna look like yes. What are the ravens is. Gonna look like we haven't seen anything like that and the cardinals said we. We haven't put everything out that we're we. We haven't seen very much so it's tough to give a prediction to be so assured in what you believe so i save that is the caveat to what i'm about to say at eleven minutes and change into our first n._f._l. Show of the two thousand nineteen regular season that is it's here. Teams are practicing. They're ready to go. I do believe i am not eating mike delta. Thank god because i i like the hat rich. I want on hard meet. Pardon me for saying actually pardon me for saying you look great in the hat. We can get you another hat. I don't wanna be having thing on the internet forever me eating a piece of hat because ezekiel elliott is not the starting running back for the dallas cowboys. This is coming sunday against the giants. More and schefter are saying a deal is coming within twenty four hours. Ian rapoport is saying saying he's on a plane to dallas. I told you guys when we left friday. I need to see on saturday or sunday a news report that they're talking and and they're getting closer. I got that little movement got that then. I need to hear that zeke is on his way to dallas because that means he's been told by his representative additive brockie arsenault. They're close enough okay. I'm seeing on the screen something from floor pro football talk that even oh it's on confirmed as he said he's putting out terms and dollars that have been agreed to i've heard terms dollars have been agreed to but the the the the contract is so unconventionally long for a running back floor saying six years that they're working on when jerry's gonna actually put the money in zeke's bank account because running back you wanna backload year five six of a contract attract i mean i was born but not yesterday so he's apparently on his way to dallas. If not already there gotta get back on the practice field tomorrow in order to be ready to go sunday. I told you over over and over and over and over again. It's a midnight league in terms of striking negotiation. They wait till midnight. It appears that we even have agreement men on both sides when midnight is striking and it's in this twenty four hour period. He's gotta be on the practice field wednesday for the new york giants and i will. I'll say this even if you're seeing a report in the next twenty four hours saying that this is gone south. There's no way in my mind that we've we've gotten this far that he's going to withhold his services. Even longer or the cowboys will mess enough to try to mess this thing up and come out and try and spin it about how much they love tony pollard or how much how much pie is less right. They can't come this far and even if they spin it like that. Ignore the fact that is obvious to all of us who cover the n._f._l. Watched the n._f._l. Loved the n._f._l. And live and breathe practice photosynthesis on the planet take in oxygen and send carbon dioxide into the world older. Whatever you wanna do trees and plants we all know if the cowboys take the field sunday without ezekiel elliot doing the giants favor and any team may face this year without ezekiel elliott because of their inability to get him in is a favorite of that team that they are playing. Which is why you get the deal done early. I don't care if girlies messing with other teams contracts the rams don't care he's in camp. They play the superbowl last year. Get done early set the market yourself. Figure it out amongst your own world. Go about your business. I better not eat a frigging hat. I'll be very honest. I've been obsessed all weekend long hanging out with my family now my daughter's last pot my daughter's six. I'm even telling her. There's less pioneers a cake on the table. It's crazy kenny. I will not eat a hat. I'm bringing in rub tomorrow. It's non. We're not talking about it. It's gonna get done guys on his way to dallas alice not giving my hat up now. Chris card is coming up and by the way over the weekend in houston while texans you and all that stuff justin verlander throw no header up in toronto that attitude and he's joining us in our number three love this guy love the way he pitches and we have something in common believe it or not and it has nothing to do with marrying up yeah and out kicking coverage curious says all right that's all coming up here on the show our poll question and pro football hall of famer from f s one chris carter. It's it's <hes> it's gonna be a lot of fun with chris. Ohio state looked great. Just it feels look great man and hey man i would love michigan michigan if we could take on a team coached by a guy from hospital bad like your team but the hell was that didn't matter guy coach from a hospital bed and still get shut out what i can't wait to talk about this eight four four zero four rich number dial on anything you want to talk about my super bowl predictions action's coming up but first things first chris carter next on the rich eisen show. At the fields on second down takes off running straight ahead to the owls forty thirty down the left field to the owls ten any takes it into the end zone for a touchdown welcomed. Welcome to columbus justin field fifty one yards eating ron fields gets a quick snap throws a deep down a left side for victor opened score touchdown benjamin instrument victor in thirty two yard touchdown pass from justin field. Yeah that's <hes> that's how it all started for the trademark ohio state <hes> for ryan day and justin fields they <hes> they sent they sent lane kiffin pack and pretty damn quick five touchdowns by fields most touchdowns ounce responsible for a player in his first game in the history of buckeye football and i've always wanted to give my guests what they like to hear. I wanna make them comfortable. <hes> so that's <hes> that's the way we roll into our conversation with a co host of first things first every single weekday from six thirty to nine thirty a._m. On f._m. One pro football hall of famer chris carter here on the rich eisen show. How are you chris rich. How are we doing today buddy well. I'll tell you what <hes> everything looked good in the horseshoe over the weekend. That's for sure. I thought i was down in florida for the weekend but i thought i heard even the michigan people. I thought i thought that they were just so happy about ryan day. The ryan day air starting and they don't have a quarterback lost them to the n._f._l. This is going to be our year and then about maybe eighty four minutes into the game. They were doubled over like oh. My goodness wins the knicks now. We're gonna build beat the ohio state while tell you this chris. You didn't hear it from me. You didn't hear from for me in terms of <hes> i i. I had ryan day on the show two weeks ago and i know who is coordinating last year in the big game and i also know so you know <hes> haskins what he looked like when he came off the bench when j. t. barrett was hurt in the big house a couple of years ago i i i am not <hes> asleep at the switch whatsoever and actually without urban you know intimidating and look and you looking over your shoulder. If you're ryan days ace 'cause urban i mean he likes to play conservative football. Good defense special teams and don't take any chances on offense. Now ryan day can get his job. It's his team um. The university's back in the fan base is so it should be exciting. I am worried about their defense. <hes> i think that they're going to have some problems for the defensive line later on especially the interior. They got a couple of injuries. I think that will they'll hurt him. As the season goes on why nelson urban was was was <hes> entertaining and and and <hes> and and it was an interesting mix on the set <hes> on fox sports for college football. Do you think he's done coaching chris well well unless everything that is light of known his wife for many years. Everything urban told me from a medical standpoint like all that stuff where we just have to a miracle would have to happen so for me. It was completely medical. <hes> i'm very close to urban urban coach me. When i was little house state <hes> i looked in his wife life is and i know she's done and richie bends business a lot and you cover a lot of dynamic people like people on the field people in the mike but when your spouse l. starts telling you it's over with. It's just a matter of time. You're not wrong. Chris carter you are you are not wrong. What a happy life life is. There's no doubt about that <hes> right here on the rich eisen show okay. What about <hes>. Let's let's dive into your <hes>. Let's say i guess in a way with the buckeyes zeke got here and he's on a plane right now to dallas. Are you hearing the same thing chris. Yeah i think shannon reported earlier that he had inside information that zeke was coming back as is a find a good faith but <hes> jerry no during those can be a special year. He knows zeke's special. <hes> you know football player but also as you know in knowing gerry dairyman jerry as a tough negotiator. Don't let them smiles and all those sucks up fully the n._f._l. They were calling a one owner negotiate a deal. They would call jerry jones so <hes> the is the best running back in the n._f._l. And it's proven it over three years but because of off off-the-field it allowed the water to be murky compared to be on the flam dunk to now he's got a fourth jerry and that's what he had to do with this holdout yeah i mean that hasn't been much what's discussed chris because we know he's led the league in rushing to of the last three years and at the cowboys can talk about tony paul they want but it it it would be doing every single team of favor if they can't get on the field <hes> and they play bat team without zeke but not much discussed about how the off the field stuff <hes> has played into this negotiation with the exception of jerry alluding to it when he said he had the right. He's earned the right to joke with zeki eliot. I'm wondering how much you think that's been playing into to these chats well. I know zeke side you know you can your leverage is not coming and once the season starts losing games but they know the reality. If zeke had the same reputation off the field is todd gurley then there wouldn't the been any problems lay beyond bail suffered the same thing and pittsburgh yeah pittsburgh from concerns about the guaranteed money but they were concerned dislike ezekiel kill but in a different form or fashion. This guy might end up in the principal's office. He's already been suspended once that being both of them and l. bell and the pittsburgh steelers. They were very very concerned moving forward. You know as far as wow you know. Do we give this kid all this guarantee money and what could happen in the future so it's it's a reality man not only should you pay your best players but it's been a rally in the league for a long time you pay your best citizens and that's why i really had a problem jon gruden what he did with khalil mack and amari cooper like these are great guys you can start your start your program around these type of guys but he decided they do differ and actually made investment and antonio and as you can see 'em and and are are totally <hes>. There's two different people two totally different characteristics chris makes it sure does chris carter here on the rich eisen show. Do you like what bill o'brien in houston did over the weekend. <hes> ah i mean all in here <hes> short and long-term chris or if i was this sometime i've tried to put myself in other people's spot. If my job was on the line man i wouldn't be carrying about the future. You know things called me. Hey chris benham concerned learned about your show and everything man opened up my rolodex and pull out every name that i know i would i would try to. I would spend all the budget money for this year next year. The bills save my career because we need to find out disarm watson. We know you football can get knocked out. We saw that in that division in with andrew luck. That's all plain simple. If you don't protect them they will get hurt and their careers could be altered. So why don't you know. I don't believe tunsil is as an elite player. I believe they paid too much for you know i believe he is above average tackle. He's not great in run blocking so that they spend the. I normally yes for an average player at this point yeah now any better yes. He can get better but let's be real about it right now. He's an average n._f._l. L. tackle and so <hes> clowney also for cents on a dollar. They sent him out the door. What do you think that means for seattle. Does that change anything for you in the n._f._c. picture him being put there and the old <hes> nascar package that we know that pete carroll likes to to employ a seattle did get better but for me. Clowney is a limited player like i can't pay him that franchise tag over four years i can do it. Maybe for one year but i believe it's injury. I believe they're they're real and i believe that lack of versatility like he he stand up linebacker because he is not drop great at dropping in space and look at the type of defenders. He's played with like he's only going to have that type of fact day. What getting double teams all the time well. What's going to happen when he gets double team so for me. The lack of overall productivity yes is he a freak athlete yeah but thanks to michigan and the sixers bowl like one chris. That's a that's. That's next level trolling. See that's why you're in the hall of fame chris part of the reason while you're in the whole now well done. That was a great play yeah but can i develop like it. I mean he's a free creek athletes. They call randy moss free but he developed today. Vian clowney have not developed so to me like what is versatility. What can he do. Is he a game changer. You have to double team to win the game an an answer to that would be no so then the last part of this. It's so difficult to accuse a team in the n._f._l. Of tanking because there's no way that the dolphins who suit up on game day we are going to purposefully lose. There's no brian floors and his coaching staff for like let's figure out a game plan where we can actually look good but lose today because we have to lose but when you trade away players like this at the outset of the season kiko alonzo is now on the saints how how can you not accuse the dolphins of trying to tank for two right here chris this man. It's hugli and rich. You and i are fortunate that we get to cover the n._b._a. Other sports right most guys around that just only covering n._f._l. Belt so it's totally foreign to them in the way we talked about the n._b._a. Ultimately the product. We consume their products. We buy their out n._b._a. Ticket we go to to their gains spend our money and when you don't see the best players out there because that's one thing that's one thing about the thing that's always disturbing. I've always the say the national football league the best of the best. It's the best players in the world the m._b._a. It's the best players in the world but when you start giving away things things and you start you know that this team's not going to be competitive. I mean fitz patrick like how much money they're paying him to take that because because i know if he signed there the free agent and they say you know something. We're not going to be real good this year. We're getting ready to get rid of our left. Tackle the fitzy sign there. You know so for me the dolphins they are rebuilding. I am glad to see kenny stills. Get out of miami with everything there with the owner and everything so he can have a clear conscience go ahead and finish his career now. I do believe he could be the gym in this matter yeah sean. He's got to be responsible with the ball bill o'brien. They gotta put together other offense that he doesn't hold the ball as much but kenny salesman opposite of nuke man they could do some damage in the n._f._l. So i think the the sean is one of the most underrated players we have in the league and i love people talk about in more but mandate pay a handsome price for an average average tackle and i believe at underrate at wide receiver cris carter here on the rich eisen show. You know it's interesting. You mentioned still is going to houston. I mean <hes> dwayne brown would tell you the texans aren't the most woke team in the league either chris i mean what what do you make of flora's seemingly sending kenny stills out of town because because of all of this well if the if the if the original owner mr mcnair was alive i'd probably have some problems with but based on his hands on you know the the protests and everything but he's not there and i believe he'll have an opportunity <hes> to build do the types of things that he deems to be important but brian flores whereas like he works for a boss man we all got ball and man we get orders a lot of times we don't like but what do we do as far as keeping your job and being professional. You try to go about doing that and brian floors. He's trying to build his career. Is this the only opportunity as americans that he might get a head coach. I don't like in fact he wanted to take all of these losses him chris greer. <hes> chris greer the general manager there. That's a rare combination as far as african american in the head coaching see and the general manager seat but they are tanking. We got a call it what it is and it's going to be ugly and to me. I just you put so many players safety at risk so many guys can get hurt when i can't depend on interior lines. I can't defend my left guard. I can't i don't know the center if he's qualified to get the protection people get get her and this man. This is a big boy sport man. This is not like basketball. You can hide guys know guys get hurt and that's what i'm concerned about the whole image of love to league with the dolphins and what they're doing yeah they are tanking and it's going to be a well lastly on this subject. Do you think it's possible knowing the league as well as you do. Chris carter the dolphins have seen enough out of josh rosen over the last several weeks in practices that they could safely say he's not there guy despite coughing alpe too and i mean poor josh rosen. I mean what what a situation to first year head coaches and back to back years with defensive pedigrees and now banged up offensive line last year this one trade away their best left tackle and potentially best wide receiver lever. I mean how can you possibly evaluate. Josh rosen through all this unless they already have is that possible chris impossible for one. It doesn't match up with why you trade traded to for him but rich you cover this league enough and we don't talk about enough man. There's things called institutional talent at people picking the players. Most people understand the salary cap. People understand how to put a roster together and careers are determined off of that. I say one percent of all all the players only twenty two thousand of plane n._f._l. They can be in any system him brown barry sanders these reggie white they can play anywhere but the rest of us we need a system and of course part of new three receiver slot at six two and a half to ten to build a dominate like we need a system to be able to take advantage of our skill set and josh has not had it and i believe that his career will be altered that he'll never be able to fix it because you have to organizations. Give up on you within the first two years. It's hard to recover from that and unfortunate for him the team they drafted him and trade it for him. Were in the situation. They were in the time he came. This is kirk cousins in the right system with kubiak and minnesota chris. What do you think well. That's a wait and see the thing about that. System is the system don't matter because they pay him all that money and when they they pay you twenty eight million guaranteed and they've never done that for any other quarterback man this is result man kirk cousins gotta play big and the big games dalvin cook healthy and then no more excuses. You wanna do that kind of scratch man. You got to perform some. You're used to you know every day they pay. Hey you all have read and you get it done not like her cousins so you're michigan he michigan state before we let you go chris super bowl prediction. It's going to be on fox in in south florida. I'm sure you'll be a very large part of of that coverage who plays in that game game best. You can tell here tuesday after labor day chris. Let's go with my philadelphia eagles that draft at me. Lie eagles fly a rematch against new england. Hey new england gold the four straight it's tough. It's tough to go in a different direction from new england isn't it. It really really is and i'd like to pick from homework but i can't make a case for well. You you know why i new england is as good as it is year in year out kris right. You know oh that's right. Go ahead until well. I mean bella. Check obviously has a lot to say. I mean belichick is terrific. He is the modern day lombardi bought walk his extension on the field the man who gets it done when it's all said and done the man who is the goat the undisputed goat at the position of quarterback. Tom brady and the institution of higher learning that did put him in the n._f._l. Is a large part to do with that. The university of michigan chris oh yeah. Michigan is only team to build stop. Tom brady actually from being a great training ground smith at the same thing that michael jordan chris. I don't wanna hear it. You know michael. Michael jordan was going back to north carolina after he left tom brady. I started going back. I wonder what you know what chris we're just gonna have to do. You don't wanna take nick rights role here in this conversation. Okay you nick do a good enough job. I don't need to stop on that but <hes> we'll just agree to disagree on this front that you are right. That man is to go so you have the highest regard for him. Yes yes yes chris. You take care of yourself a really appreciate you and the phone. Call your show and i hope to do do this more often. Look right back at you. That's chris carter at chris without an h carter eighty on twitter at chris carter nineteen sixty sixty five on instagram and you can check them out every single day on f s one six thirty to nine thirty am eastern. I want to get a little bit more into the rosen situation here. I mean i i feel for the kid no other way to put it. We'll hit on that a little bit more eight four four two four rich. We haven't even gotten to our poll question yet. A little bit more college football brockman sneaky good gains. We'll check on your first foray into the gambling university two thousand nineteen football season. We'll check your work and we'll check on whether zeke is landed in dallas yet. Del tufo sat does not look very edible. I don't think i'm going to have to go there. That's all coming up still with john maclean and justin verlander mr no himself houston. That's still to come on the rich eisen show. Hey listeners just wanted to take a minute to thank all of my great sponsors and all of you great listeners for supporting. Textile august seconds remaining approach that was essentially the biggest win of the weekend because it involved too high ranked teams auburn and oregon auburn it looked like with setting up for the game winning kick attempt to and they just <hes> went four touchdown final twenty seven twenty one freshman quarterback did that affect anybody's sure did because auburn line auburn was minus four four and a half depending on what you got that so people were being upset if they're here it comes to kick and organ covers. They go for touchdown win cover <unk>. Did that help you out. That wasn't one of your sneaky. Good games was it. That was not a sneaky good do this weekend i mean. Did you go three three baby. I gave you wisconsin. They blew out well. Outlawry lord jonathan taylor heisman right is when cannon. I gave syracuse twenty four nothing you ever that spread baby texas over. We've got a cheap one with under under a minute ago but g._p. Hey man that l._e._d.'s win great teams cover. How good is jalen hurts. How good did he look for oklahoma days and five hundred yard six touchdown five hundred total yards fifth most in oklahoma history pretty good player in the past twenty years with three hundred or more passing yards three or more touchdown passes one hundred fifty rushing yards in three or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. The other one was named jonathan menzel. How about that so how i mean i got some updated. Heisman odds <hes> waiter in the news okay. That'll be interesting. I look forward to that. I would've taken syracuse by million if i knew that liberty was going to be coached by a man in a hospital but this is is one i mean i've been fortunate to do what i've been done. On a national level for damn near a quarter century hugh freeze coaching from a hospital bed is one of the most was bizarre things. I've ever seen you know he had. I guess it's is back. He had an infection and in order for him to coach on on saturday they they put a bed in in the press box so and i know he said that he wanted to be there for the students and the school that did so much for him after the way he left ole miss which out of respect for hugh freeze we won't stroll roll down that lane although there wasn't much respect earned by the way that all went down at ole miss i i will say this. I understand that we talk about faith and football and family. The three apps in what's important in life and football should not be so important and and to show your kids that football is so important that you have to coach from a hospital bed. Come on it's called having staff and delegating on the day to me. It was just it was an absurd look. It is absurd absolutely absolutely silly crazy absurd you know and he tells a story that through you know falwell junior they reached out to ben carson like the highest levels of government. They went to to try and find the right person to figure out how to go through the surgery and the post op to be able what a coach this game and then you had a press conference from the bed. Do we have a sound bite of that. We put that together for later. I mean can you freeze from his hospital. Bed had a press conference and the only way roll it. Please battle house. We saw tradition speaking miss and less. You know i mean that was to his team right there. Oh my god. I know i understand. I understand that he's talking to the team team from his bed from his hospital room. That's a way to fire up the team. Hey i'm going to get better art rollet. I was soto hours. I what is and high team you know work with those downed implants and you know just the until shopping town time what i saw them trying bizarre unlike unlike a scream at least they've got the liberty flames a step and repeat backdrop behind it honestly to me. It's it's absurd erred and it sends a ridiculous message. Get well coach. Freeze then coach your team. He even said it was like out of the twilight zone yeah because your coach from a hospital bed and you're waving at did you see dino papers. Give him the thumbs up to coach my hospital bed and got shut out so at least the next coach coaches from a hospital bed knows just kick a field goal. 'cause you'll be headed what you freeze dead. I'm serious. I i know it might be serious. I am making light of it but it's absurd weird art art poll question and and poor josh rosen. Fridays Houston Matters: The Latino Experience With Law Enforcement, And A Users Guide To The News (July 10, 2020)

"In the early days of the pandemic Houston area hospitals scrambled to store up on personal protective equipment or ease for health professionals to use as they treated Cova Ninety nine patients supply eventually met demand and thanks to stay at home orders and social distancing hospitals, rebels stocked. The recent surge of cases has changed that I'm Craig Cohen. Today on Houston matters. We learn more from Houston's health authority Dr David purse also ahead in the months since. Since the killing of George Floyd, there's understandably been a lot of attention protests in consideration of the black experience with law enforcement. What about the Latino experience both with and in police departments? Houston police chief Artas Vado and lex Domingo Garcia. Join US plus Houston Chronicle. Editor, Opinion Lisa Falkenberg talks with us about the distinction between news reporting and editorial opinion, and she joins us for a very Meta edition of the good the bad news. These and other Houston matters follow this hours news. Good Morning. This is Houston matters. I'm Craig Cohen Coming Up. Wi- some area. Hospitals are reusing personal protective equipment Houston's health authority Dr David. Purse joins US also Houston's police chief joins us for a discussion about the Latino experience with and in law enforcement, then separating news reporting from opinion, and why the lines may be blurrier than ever, but I Eddie Robinson's here with the latest on Covid nineteen impact on Greater Houston Good Morning. Good Morning Craig, and as we've been reporting all morning long including NPR news in Washington, one, hundred, five, covert nineteen related fatalities were reported in a single day on Thursday. Death tolls had stayed below sixty a day until this week now with two straight days of around one hundred deaths reported the number of Texans who've died from complications of the virus sits just under another grim milestone of three thousand and our local health officials tell us that these numbers might possibly be an undercount as city. Health officials are seeing an increase in the amount of people who are past the point of help when. When first responders arrived on the scene? The some are afraid of going to the hospital given the amount of corona virus patients, their city officials emphasized. Ambulances are fully staffed and hospitals are safe to get proper treatment for any emergency. The State of Texas also reported a new high of hospitalizations for the Tenth Consecutive Day about ninety seven hundred people across the state or hospitalized for Covid, nineteen eighty percent of the state's hospital beds are currently occupied twenty percent increase since mid April sixteen point, seven percent of Texas hospital beds are being used by cope one thousand nine patients all right the outlook. The Houston area has now seen more than fifty five thousand confirmed cases. The Texas Medical Center says on Wednesday. Four hundred twenty four people were admitted to the hospital. More than two hundred additional people compared to Monday and Tuesday the medical remains in phase, two of its ICU search plan that means some regular beds have been converted to intensive care beds. Now starting on Sunday Metro will resume fare collections on its buses and trains. fares were suspended back in March after people started staying home. Because of the pandemic the transition, the Transit Agency does say that drivers will be protected by plastic shields and all riders. To, wear a mask, metro has also adding additional buses on some of its park and ride routes Craig. Thank you very much. In the early days of the pandemic many hospitals were scrambling to keep a supply of personal protective equipment for health professionals. They treated highly contagious. Cova patients after the initial spike plateaued, hospitals were again able to obtain enough supplies, but mid the surge of the last couple of weeks some hospital. Supplies are dwindling again Dr David purses the Health Authority for the city of Houston doctor. Purse Good Morning. Good Morning. Thanks for having me absolutely before we dive into ps, you heard the numbers that Eddie Robinson just shared with us. I'm just curious. If you have any general reactions to any of that anything that you think we should be paying specific attention to. Yeah, so unfortunately no I mean. The numbers continue to rise I. would ask the people pay more attention to the trained in the numbers as opposed to any. Numerical value you know it's it's statistics, and so we need not to narrowly focused on on a number, but look at the bigger picture, and so the numbers continue to rise low. Locally next the problem. Let's. Let's dive in now to personal protective equipment. What does the supply of P-? T look like in Houston hospitals. So if you look at that TMC member institutions, and so this is like the entire Memorial Hermann System Deter Houston. Methodist Saint Luke's ourselves, etc. those systems they are reporting that. They feel they've got pretty good supplies of. the other source. Look at his set wreck. That's the south southeast Texas. Rejoined visor council which. Plays a role of being a conduit of supplies from the federal government to local healthcare institutions now they cover twenty five county region and through set roughly are continuing to get requests for a from a healthcare providers across the region, so there's a little bit of despair in some places we've got. You know a pretty good supply on hand. In other places are are struggling and the other thing about sets, it supports not just hospitals, but also long term acute care facilities, nursing homes, clinics systems of Heidi of healthcare providers, settings, and so not everyone everything they need, but for the most part the regions looking pretty good at the moment. We have been hearing though that there have been some cases of. Maybe, some administrators saying well. We'll just reuse PPE's. Need to is, are you seeing that? So. You just reuse the candy. Be Re sterilized. PB can be restored, realized what we're talking about it, but you really are and ninety five masks, and they can be restored. and. And reused now they're so lifespan. Math that can only be done so many times because eventually the material selfless. To weaken and no longer be useful, but you get several uses out of a single mass. If it's restored now that sterilization is not to routine sterilization, there's a special process that has to go through it again or probably to Cetera with the federal government. You've got the the equipment place to do so, and we're not only supporting hospitals, but roses, sporting ems, provider agencies, interesting homes, and so on and so forth. Are there any options that exist to acquire more. P P. Well, I mean the the free market and any hostetler. Healthcare you can try to purchase on the road and there's increasing numbers of vendors. Companies sort of shifted with their manufacturing from whatever they make. To P and it's still has to go through an approval process, so the the market is. Becoming better, but the demand is rising at the same time so right now. Things don't look too bad but we use a community to get ahead of this virus or else. We're going to be in a problem, not just with bt, but also hospital beds, doctors nurses, etc.. To that end while we have you here on Wednesday Mayor Turner canceled the State Gop Convention that was scheduled to take place next week at the George R Brown Convention Center downtown out of Public Health concerns. He says we're prompted in in large part by your advice, you called use of the Gr. Be a quote, clear and present danger to public health as you. No doubt know the Texas GOP seeking to have the courts reinstate its convention a Harris. County judge denied a court order barring the cancellation. If an appellate court. If any court were to ask you for insight from you in the coming days, what would you tell that court? Well I'm going to stick with what I put in my letter and I I believe that at this point with the amount of virus that is circulating and daters showing. A very. Robust amount of virus spread in this community. The idea of having a large number of people coming together in a small space is a is a very bad idea for public standpoint. it's the sort of thing that I would characterize as a super spreader event and we simply don't need to have that right now, not not in this community out. Dr David vs the city of Houston. Authority Dr Purse. Thanks very much. I appreciate it, thank you. Up Next in the wake of protests against police brutality, we explore what the Latino experience has been with and as part of law enforcement. Houston police chief Artas. Vetoes among our guests stay with us as Houston. Matters continues. This is Houston matters. I'm Craig Cohen. There's been understandably so much focused. Since the killing of George Floyd on the African American experience with law enforcement here, in Houston of course, we have a large Hispanic population. What are their experiences? Are they similar? Do they experience the same or different fears? When interacting with police? How about Latinos and Latinas in law enforcement? What do they experience and can the relationship between? Between Law Enforcement and Houston's Latino community be improved. We're going to talk it over with a couple of guests beginning with Houston police chief Art Vado and as we chat with him and in a bit with Domingo Garcia National President Lula. We welcome you to our conversation as well at seven, one, three, four, four, zero, eight seventy, or you can email us at talk at Houston Matters Dot Org chief. Welcome to Houston matters morning. Thank you. Thanks for having me to always glad to have you with us. I guess I'd like to start with with you with B because I think I want to approach this. From a couple of different angles, there is the experience that Latinos have when they interact with police, and there's also just the experience of being Latino in law. Enforcement and I'm kind of curious. What generally do you think of when you think back on your career? Thus far about how you have related to other police have there been instances. I imagine it'd been instances of discrimination. Just like would be in any walk of life. But any particular experiences come to mind. Oh Lord I mean. How much time do we have you? Know I started in this profession and nineteen eighty six with the California patrol at the time that I patrol had You know about seven thousand sworn members of the department and. The sad truth was at despite the fact we had close to one hundred captains. I think there was one that was Latino. One African American and so we used to. We used to joke about that supposed to be this diverse state and There was no diversity and you know as I went up my chain, one up through the to my career as an immigrant and the person who languages English as a second language. I can tell you that you know the same issues it affect society affect law enforcement, but I can say with a straight face in two thousand and twenty. Were much better and this the first Dottino here in. Houston police chief and the First Latino in Austin I'm proud of being a I and I think our job is to make sure we just. Keep a the workplace, a chess opportunity accessible to everybody including including the Caucasian white beep I mean there's plenty of opportunity to go around and we just need to make sure there's no one is excluded. What about within the Houston? Police Department itself in your view? Is there enough Latino representation among officers? Yeah I mean look we we we. We do really well as a minority majority department in terms of diversity Because you know, we can't just compare the population I think the populations at about forty percent, and we heard about twenty something percent have to get the latest numbers well over twenty percent. Latino but you have to look at the relevant workforce right? You know a big part of. Of. Our Latino community is undocumented, and you have to look at what percentage of meet the age requirements, the education requirements things of that nature, and so when you actually can compare our workforce to across the board off Mississippi's to the relevant workforce, which is the the the candidate pool? We're really good place and I think that's what makes Houston PD and the relationship with our community second to none. Now that said that relationship can be a challenge for some. Independent of the instances of of violence that we've seen across the country police brutality, and of course, the killing, sadly of George Floyd. And other instances there can be a lot of years at times between law enforcement and the community that you serve. What steps have you been taking over the years to try and and address that whether we're talking about people that are simply afraid of interacting with police or Worried about. Such an interaction escalating why I think you know from my career I I I've. been trying to be fair fair, minded person, and if you look at my history, you know in California. I was actually a little blower when the department discriminated against. African Americans in terms of US missions that happened there and I ended up. Fourteen Day hearing with an administrative law judge and ended up getting a seventy one page ruling in my favorite and and I can say that The things that I taken that life experience as a young man as a young boy, and I've never forgotten the road. I've travelled the path I traveled, and so I've been very sensitive to two issues of a culture and diversity, and making sure that people feel they have the people and making sure they know that nonessential island number one force multipliers the community itself, so we've done a lot of outreach as a young sergeant in East la I started east. La Chapter the national. Association where we we'd raise scholarship money for kids that are first time college students in, and we also gave him to any poor kid came through than happiness and being put in needs to la obviously there was. This forcing Latino Community to Toya giveaways, and so those things that we've been doing. We brought here in Houston. We have you know we support embody or that started years ago. here and we support that program we support You know Fiance. A A Spanish radio show that we do weekly the Alleanza screaming because what people have to understand that we know that we have a lot of folks here that don't want to talk to the police. Because the key the countries they came from as imperfect as our relationship is an our policing profession where heads and shoulders above most of the free world and they're undocumented, so we work diligently to make sure they. They understand that We need them to keep all your stolen safe, and so we do a lot of outreach and I think that helps us keep The immigrant community in the greater community extended community safe because we try to create a trust and we let people know that we're interested in chasing You know crips, not cooks, and and I think that that's that's that's being heard across our region. That takes us directly to what we wanted to talk about the other piece of this discussion. And, with our other guests to Mingo Garcia national president of Lou lack the League of United Latin American Citizens Domingo Garcia welcome to the program. For having me absolutely. So I'll just. While we've kind of gotten into this a little bit I am curious what you see as potential fears that some in Houston's Latino community may have when interacting with police today. Well ever since. Joke, stories was handcuffed and thrown into by you in the seventies. By police officers They issue a police brutality. Community has been one of fear one of almost like an occupying army occupation army. I would Thurgood Marshall School line even there. The police were sort of feared and we're not seeing this part of the community that's changed over the last decade or so, but there's still that fear factor that sometimes the police were acting as ice agents There's a racial issue and sometimes they're just not respecting. especially in. The same way they do, men and say river oaks. Domingo we were talking about efforts to. Ensure that there's more diversity within law enforcement. Specifically. The chief was talking about the Houston Police Department doesn't sharing more people of Color in law enforcement does that innately help improve attitudes and relationships with the public, or is it police attitude and culture writ large that would just needs reform period. I. was doing a great job in terms of reforming the system there and making sure that the ranks of the Houston Police Department have more than them, and that they're promoted to positions of authority within the department, when you have people policing communities that look like them And and talk to them and and respectful manner that changes the whole police community Namic, and I think that's one of the great things that's happening here over the last few years. Is that you see the turnaround in the Houston Police Department the fact that some of them participated with the black lives matter the fact that I thought she better at George Floyd. With myself and several other. Minority leaders that all positive things that be back to the community and create positive police community relations. Does it though offset that worry that you were describing about? Interacting with police, being a risk, because it might impact immigration status or worry those maybe somebody who has a green card worried that you know if they get a ticket, we would is that GONNA mean they're going to face deportation does does establishing that relationship counteract whatever those fears may be. Yes especially, if you if you're able to do that like in English, Spanish and Vietnamese also getting the word out that police officers are. they're. They're peace officers not policing for ice. They're there to protect to serve not to arrest and deport. Those are important stations. And if the police department continues their programs and continues to get the word out, I think those are issues that are important. I've talked to. I've talked to the President of the Houston Police Association on issues regarding immigration, and they're all in agreement actually, and that's really a strong positive. I think he's going for right now, but there's more work to be done now. Let's. Let's go and take a couple of calls. We have Roberto on the line from the Museum District Berta. What's your question? Yeah Craig. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said, is that the culture, or does it really matter if it's a Hispanic or African American belief I mean officer. Based on my experience, a police chief Chevy's Oh by the way I support you one hundred percent. And we have problems with an HP. Regardless of color You can address the problem this way. If telephone conversations could be recorded between HDD and citizens, you would be shocked as to how each speedy talks to a citizen. And I had assistant chief Heather Moor. Checked with her details. Also when I called, for HP took almost two hours. The young lady came within. That is huge and thank God Jetta Camcorder because she run. She didn't run away, but she's walked away. When twice and that was reported so. she did you see a reprimand? But chief also world things and I want to talk about this. That the if you reprimand or you take disciplinary action against the police officer that it can go into mediation, and and it can reverse your what you took this action. And also heard that shortly. The Union is up for re contract with the Union What do you think about that as far as reforming a contract with the union? Thank you, Roberta. That's a lot of questions in their chief. Let you if you attack a one or two of those items. Appreciate the comments and if you had complaint wasn't resolve to your satisfaction, please. Contact me on email at art dot. Houston police DOT ORG so I can follow up but as in terms of this department. We've He's right I. mean there's good and bad and everything and good and bad it across the race and ethnicity national origin I mean we're human beings, and you know cracks down the across wrestler. We've made it wealth worse as effort throughout history of you're a Christian. But at the end of the day we've we've We've had about a over a hundred and sixty officers and three and a half years have left the department either by being fired. Resigning or retiring and Lulu of being fired and I can save, and those very serious cases where it is a firing and they've appealed I will. We've only lost one appeal and three and a half years, so that that that's a blessing, but I think part the reasons that we try to be consistent, we make our expectations clear, and then we apply the standards across the board, regardless of who the person is the rank and Sean and so forth and so i. do believe with the upcoming. Upcoming contract negotiations with the city and with the state legislature. Coming up there is room to get some things done to improve our ability to actually hold a bad officers accountable, and by doing so supporting good officers in good relation, policing and community and community relations, so Stan standby because the sessions coming in the Legislature Congress needs to act, and we'll see what we can get done in our own contract, or you're in Houston. Right Eric is in the east and Eric. What's your question or comment? Yeah thanks for having me so I'm a longtime east Houston. Wrestling resident I'm forty years old Hispanic Male, and in my forty years twice. I've had a police officer appointed gun at me and both cases I was doing nothing wrong and it was not. Found guilty of any crime or anything like that and when I say the statement that people always have a an understanding that the first part of that statement I've had a gun pulled on me by a police officer. They understand that they they're more they. They believe that more than they believe. The second State Meet Statement which is I, did nothing wrong and I think there is a culture because in both cases in the first case happened in two, thousand and two. There were white off. Black Officers Hispanic. There's in the second case which happened in two thousand twelve. It was right here downtown on the east side where I had a business as a business owner I'm helping one of my employees get into their car. Were they unlocked, or they locked their keys in the car, and the Metro police officer a gun and told us to get on the floor and I asked him very calmly. Has This someone reported an incident? The you have a reason to be putting us on the floor and putting pointing your gun at us. And in the first case that resulted in the secure battle with the county, ultimately was resolved with the With by the county commissioners court, but in the second case never even filed. They let us go and just told us to get off the ground and go back to over here doing my question. Is If. There is a culture where like I said in the first case that resulted in a settlement. If police officers are getting off the hook, you know if if I could go back, you know ten years ago and think about those officers never had any reprimand, or never had any negative marks against them, because there was a settlement Doesn't that influence the culture? And what are we doing fix that? They calling for the questions chief. You're very eight by the way I looked it up at three percent Latino. Latino officers in doing really well. But. You mentioned the county and you mentioned the Metro. HDD having said that the most important thing for me. Is that when people feel like? They were not created properly by the police. They've got to file a complaint. especially in a world of body, worn cameras and cell, phone, cameras and cameras. Ring phones haven't cameras in all the cameras everywhere. There's a high probability. We're going to have really good. If there is no deal the bottom line is we want to know when we don't get things done right because we can't. We can't hold people accountable. People don't come forward and that's why we do so much in Spanish with the Spanish Latino community. To make sure they know their rights and make sure that they know that we're here for them I don't. Know this after sp four past. We actually have a monthly report on on the any any. Of officers after that past anybody making inquiry, and despite the fact that we stop and arrest and a lot of people have Sony contract for ever city. We've had five inquiries total five in all in the last three years. That bill has been here so that the keys been reported and and and then ask what happened with a complaint. What was what was the outcome? And what were the consequences of? While we have you here chief And I'm sure you're aware of this LX Dr Candice Matthew. Nella Wilkerson some other community activists. Are Calling on you to resign for quote. Poor oversight lack of accountability and poor transparency when it comes to officer involved shootings. They also want the FBI. Justice Department to investigate what they allege is a history of deadly and excessive force within HP. Would you care to comment on that? That comes with the territory you know you. You can't make everyone happy It's when you look at how you can say. There's no accountability when I just said we've. We've had to let go hundred and sixty over hundred and sixty officers. You know they keep bringing up. Quantel who doesn't even live in Houston. My understanding lives in parallel, but it makes a lot of money out of Houston and the people of Houston and and the tragedies. disingenuous, even brought up. The six officer involved shootings is my understanding including one shooting that he got the witness and re she himself video. What the family and He clearly stated to the family and to everyone present in the room that it was justified as the the aggravated robbery carjacking suspect shot at police officers, and they ended up shooting back at him. Sadly he died, and so you know that comes with the territory, not the first time that people of asking to resign It won't be the last time, but I think my record as a reformer and you know when you've had votes, no confidence because you're too tough. According to unions including the Austin Police, association after I fired one. African American Young, man You know we can't with there's no magic formula to. Ensure on percent you know hundred percent success in terms of every contact out there but I can tell you that my record is well established as a reformer and It is what it is. I just continue to do everything I can to keep the city safe officers safe our officers professional and keep the relationship going in the right direction with our commute Houston police chief Vado elect National President Domingo Garcia. Thank you both very much. We're talking with us. Thank you? Thank you. Just ahead the ever blurrier lines between news and opinion and how to know which is which we talk with Houston Chronicle editor of Opinion Lisa Falkenberg is Houston. Matters continues. What is the sense of these centers is a special time when we count every single person in the country. You're kidding. Build his canter. Of course counting. Everyone in your home helps support at your neighborhood by funding schools, hospitals, and more so complete sentences by calling going online or returning your phone by mail. It's totally private visit Twenty Twenty Census Dot Gov and Brought to you by Carnegie Corporation of New, York and sesame workshop. I really have to follow Elmo in the count all right. This is Houston I'm Craig Cohen before the Internet smartphones social media in Cable News networks grabbed us by the scruff of our necks screamed. Watch me read me and subscribe. We typically got our news just a few ways through the newspaper that landed on the lawn, live on the radio, usually at the beginning of the hour on one of three network, nightly news broadcasts, or the late local news, and if one Johnny Carson's monologue, but that was pretty much it, and in each case, the distinction between news and editorial was crystal clear if it. It was opinion. It said so in the paper. It was an editorial on TV. The station identified it as such radio commentators were identified as mole commentators, not news anchors today when it's all delivered on the same device through the same social media platforms, and all look sound reads kind of the same. It's a lot harder to discern fact from opinion, but both are critical to understanding the world around us. We thought we'd dig into this distinction. Both are important, and how each ideally should be presented joining us now is the editor of opinion for the Houston, chronicle or friendly, so Falkenberg Good Morning Lisa. I. How is what we read on the opinion, page or editorials or op? Eds or columns identified as opinion. How has all of that developed differently from how your papers newsroom operates? Well as listening to your description, and it's unusual because. Sometimes, they criticized for being the dinosaurs of the mainstream media, but our ethics. Are Old and tried and true as well, and that's very good thing, and if the Houston Chronicle, for instance every single piece you read, the depending will say opinion. If it's an editorial, it will say editorial if it's an essay but essays. We have a very. Firm lines and might even say a wall between the newsroom and myself the opinion shop. the editor of the Houston. Chronicle Steve Riley does not have any say input into. Our content. I don't go to his meetings and say hey. You should run the story so. It's You know it's. It's a line that we really try and respect, and we try to be as transparent as possible so that people who maybe aren't familiar with You know our the way that we do things online. Can See and and learned that that you can trust. This is opinion or this news. Editorials op EDS. Editorial columnist work in most reputable newspapers are though still largely based in fact with opinions and conclusions drawn from those facts, citing statistics sources generally steeping their opinions in evidence that supports it a. why is it that maybe in some other platforms cable news comes to mind some talk radio? Hopefully, not this one opinions fly often without any of that underlying work. Because, it takes work. Your homework and people don't WanNa, do it? It's far easier to sit on your couch. Can Your as well as a lot of doing these days and there's like? Far Easier To sit around and think that you're the smartest person in the world and tell everybody what to think. It's hard work to call up people who disagree with you and say hey, this is what I'm thinking on this. Tell me I'm wrong. Push back. I told my staff you know. It is, it makes your arguments often wrongdoer if that if that person cannot disprove you, sometimes they I mean I've had times when I call people up writing a column on deadline and somebody, somebody'll say something and I think wow. I was wrong. I can't write this or I've got to write it in a different way. but if they don't do that if they don't move, do on your position. They make it stronger because they show you. What your weaknesses in your argument? You're blinds. And you can help address those in the pizza. Make it stronger. Do you think most news consumers today are as clear on the separation between news and opinion. As maybe we were back when there were fewer sources of both in the distinction was maybe more overt. Definitely, not because it's very confusing online I deal with this with my own with my parents trying to tell them. Hey, if you see something that makes you super angry. If you see something that sounds this, this is this really true? Look it up because chances are. It's not i. mean the first thing you know I've been doing this for. I don't even want to say how many a couple of decades at least and even I every now and then start to read something and saying okay. Wait a second you know did I look at the source? Did I check if this article has a byline on it? Have I looked this? Particular rumor snow there. There are things that you can do as a news consumer to educate yourself The things I just mentioned, but there's also make sure there's multiple sources in story. Are they quoting live human being? Are they citing linking spelling and punctuation. We all know. Get email. You know some print somewhere promising US money that if you can't spell probably not real there's no. There's you know just when you're doing your own research, check. The website has a dot Edu dot. COM DOT GOV. Dot something that you don't recognize. That, that's maybe a red flag. does it record visit includes original reporting. does it. Does this publication that you're reading correct errors I think maybe today that is, that is the brightest line between journalists trying to operate. In an ethical way with standards and those who aren't. If my writers, if even an OP, ed writer, WHO's not on my staff? It's possible. God, love it. If you writes an op-ed in it has an error in it. We arguing a correction. And so that is a standard that you find in mainstream media. For All the fault. We are human, but we correct our errors now. That's a good distinction between. Good and bad journalism of any form, but I guess I'm wondering. What are some things that we can look out for to determine whether or not what we're reading is a an objective news story, versus of even even very well crafted editorial. How do you? How do you make that distinction? Well like I said. I mean they're not labeling assets. You should question whether you should even be reading it whether it's even reputable. I mean it should be clear. Every reputable news that newspaper I know labels at that way now if you want to check out some of the of the sites that you look at it and see, where are these and a spectrum, or what kind of biases does this organization have? You can there are sites such as all sides media? There's Society of professional journalists has some resources? there's. There's a big chart that's floating around the Internet and I think it's available in Las. Stick media that has basically a biased chart, and it shows you where each NPR The New York. Times CNN daily cost. Y- breitbart where all of those fall on the spectrum, and if you see breitbart floor out to the right and daily cost bar to the left, you will know. This publication allows some bias that you should take what they're saying with that grain of salt. If you see NPR's smack, DAB in the middle. Adding Bloomberg is in there and incredible national publication, but if you see those neutral sources, you will know that their content is probably clearly labeled, and they probably make an effort to get different sides represented so i. think that's part of it is well just be wary if it's not labeled. and. You know if it's not then there's for any decision. There's probably I I wouldn't be so sure about the editorial standards that they're following. Lisa Falkenberg is the editor of opinion for the Houston Chronicle. She also appears once a month on the good, the bad and the ugly, and she will be part of that up next, but at least for this discussion for the moment, Lisa. Thank you very much. Thank you, Craig! And in this week's the good, the bad and the ugly. Our panelists will weigh in on the state GOP Convention, the Far Sides Gary Larson's new cartoons, and in a Meta moments, the good, the bad and the ugly of the good, the bad and the ugly. I can't explain it. Just stick around Houston batters industry. A lot can happen in a week. Some of it good some of it bad some of downright ugly when faced with intriguing developments in the weeks news, we turn to a rotating panel of non-experts to Parse. The good, the bad and the ugly all on today's socially distanced paddle Houston Chronicle editor of opinion, Lisa Falkenberg Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine Health Economist. Vivian Ho and Marcus Davis owner of the Breakfast Club restaurant in the host of fish grits and Lisa Vivian Marcus Welcome to Houston matters happy Friday Craig. Thank you, thank you. Craig good to be here panel. After weeks of political posturing between state Republicans in Houston Mayor, Sylvester, Turner the mayor Wednesday announced, he was cancelling the Texas Gop Person Convention that was scheduled to take place at the George R Brown Convention Center next week as News, eight, hundred seven Jen Rice reported Wednesday with Covid nineteen cases, continuing to rise in the area and positively rates consistently above ten percent for more than. Than two weeks, the mayor said public health concerns are first and foremost state. GOP leaders had already planned to deliver their speeches by video, but did not call for participants to meet virtually after a lot of political theater mayor Turner cancels the in-person Gop State Convention in Houston, is this good, bad or ugly Lisa? He Know Craig I think this is all of the above. It's good, bad and ugly. It's good for public health. Obviously, it's bad optics for Turner and kind of fuels this. ridiculous claim that you know he's trying to meddle in Republican politics. but it's also ugly that it took this long for somebody to be an adult and do the right thing you know the Houston. Chronicle editorial board called for the governor, and for the GOP to move this convention online as the Democrats had done, and they refused, and so and the Texas Medical Association a Lotta. Reputable groups saw that this is a disaster waiting to happen gathering thousands. Thousands of people in the middle of a pandemic hotspot and were just really glad that I'm really glad that you know. The mayor stood, stood up and did the right thing all right it good, bad or ugly. Vivian Ho I. Think it was a very good decision that mayor Turner decided to cancel this event and hats off to the Houston business leaders at the Greater Houston Partnership. Partnership for supporting his decision, you know economists have studied what happened during the Spanish flu pandemic of nineteen eighteen and they found that cities that opened up too early like Saint Louis in Philadelphia suffered long-term economic damage, relative to cities that were more cautious, and that type of information is starting to come out and play true nowadays because we're starting to see that Sweden, which never had. Had, a lockdown actually had many more deaths relative to other Scandinavian countries, and its economy is actually doing slightly worse than those economies as well because people are too afraid to go out and engage in economic activity, so I compliment Turner because he's actually made the right decision. In terms of term economic growth. Okay, good, better ugly. Marcus Davis Greg. The answer is embedded in the question. Political Theater, it is in fact ugly, but unfortunately it is the order of the day we have found a way to make politics source of entertainment and a source of self preservation versus it being a vehicle for prospering the nation and American citizens that count on the political leadership. We have politicized this pandemic, and unfortunately it has been to the detriment of American citizens long before the pandemic hit America who already sick. America had cancer, and that cancel was partisan politics, which created a vacuum in leadership, and he wrote it a desire for all of America to. Not just party, but the nation as a whole and all of its citizenry, and you know what's particularly ugly about this is the hypocrisy involved here? So you had speakers who are willing to be allowed to peer appeared convention virtually, but everybody else is expected to show up in the flesh. What does that say about how a party regards? It's it's faithful. You know that's not any kind of of group. I'd be confident in in being a member of where are their priorities and where their priorities today they're. They're already filing suit suing. The mayor's suing the city of Houston for breach of contract, and they've got a breach of common sense and regard for public welfare that they need to be dealing with before they start. Suing panel is a proud past owner and display of farside calendars through the years. I'm pleased as punch to report the cartoonist Game Larson shared. Shared his first new work in twenty five years this week. Larson's Farside single panel cartoons were often masterpieces of twisted irony. They appear daily in one thousand nine hundred newspapers around the world for fifteen years, then Larson retired in one, thousand, nine, hundred five say for an annual Christmas card. He says in recent years after getting fed up with a constantly clogged quote, traitorous pen, he started using a digital tablet and fell in love again with cartooning the result three new cartoons this weekend, maybe just maybe more to come. Stresses the new stuff he sharing on his website is not a resurrection of the Far Side. Daily cartoons will not exactly anyway. Gary Larson shares his first cartoons for the public in twenty five years. Is this good, bad or ugly Vivian? It's really really good to see Gary Larson back and people should have a look at these three cartoons. They're great, particularly the third one. If you've actually had a son, go through the cub scouts you got to look at that cartoon I was just laughing my head off at it. You know he says that these aren't a resurrection of the original far side cartoons, but they have the same bizarre. Bizarre sense of humor the thing that's amazing. Is that with that digital pen? They are so much more vibrant. It's almost like seeing a three d. cartoon and I'm just amazed by it. How how vibrant colors are and the images particularly because I've been struggling with trying to figure out how to use a digital pen with the tablet to do some online teaching in the fall I wish I could take lessons from Gary Larson. Because he's got a lot. He could show me and probably make my. More interesting to my students to all right. What say you Marcus Davis Greg so much to be said about this, but the ugly part is that bears so little time It's a good thing that Mr Larson is. Making his comeback, I appreciate some things that I've read about him in his work and his hesitancy to enter into the World Wide Web, but also appreciate his reasoning for coming into the fold now He confessed admitted. His hesitation still has some ambivalence. But. He specifically said he's coming back. As a result of the evolution of his thinking and I thought that that was powerful. It's indicative of how we should operate today. Even in the midst of this pandemic in a world that we've had depressed. Pause that we need to evolve in thinking about how we move forward in. To future all right Lisa Falkenberg. This is great. I never had a Farside desk calendar or posted the cartoons on the water cooler, but you know I always enjoyed them when I saw them and I think that he no Thursday's things are so heavy. Things are so heavy and there's not enough. thunders. I feel like there's not enough cleverness nine eleven not enough. Just. Dep. in the new cycle, and that is what cartoonists provide and it's. Frankly why I'm so sad that we've seen some of the great ones go I mean our own. The chronicles Nick Anderson. And you know a lot. Ones in of the ones in the industry that we. Have lost. It's an art form that is needed now perhaps more than ever so glad to see this panel on Monday anymore coney that composer of many of Sergio, Leone's beloved. Spaghetti westerns passed away among his most appreciated compositions, the theme to the good, the bad and the ugly his passing reminds me of how after years of dutiful, listening to this very segment of Houston. Houston matters every week about a year or so ago, my dad called me to let me know that he was watching the movie. The good, the bad and the ugly, and that he suddenly heard the music we'd been using here on the good, the bad and the ugly, and he wanted to know if we knew that. In fact, that music comes from that movie. I should note the dad is a huge fan of Westerns but maybe not all that observant about the music played during them. Dad did not know the theme to the good. The bad and the ugly is actually the theme to the good, the bad and the ugly. Is this good bad or ugly markets? Greg I have to introduce a new category? The category of disappointing. Here's why when someone comes into the restaurant and they bring their parents with them, and they excitedly sheer with me. This is their mother or their fathers. First Time. Out welcomed them into the restaurant and engage in dialogue and I'll ask them where they're from, and when I find out that they're from the Houston and they were born and raised here. Live there all of their lives. Then turn to the child and say your mother's lived here. All of her life, and after nearly twenty years in business. This is the first time bringer. You should be ashamed of yourself. So to the child that host a show called good, bad and ugly that has not shared with his parents where the theme song came from. I say Ditto. Right Lisa Craig I think this is a good thing. I think that it's it's really it's really sweet. It says a lot that your father must listen to this show so often. You know that he sees a very famous piece of music associated with you. Instead of you know very famous filmmakers Tony So. Think it's really sweet. My parents frankly stopped reading my work years ago, so it's. It's really nice. Signal of parental support so they go okay, Vivian well. This story is pretty good. You Know Craig the fact that your father is willing to allow you to share this story on public radio means he has a great sense of humor and you know. Maybe he actually has more in common with generation Z., and you realize my guess is most generations. He hasn't watched this film. Maybe some of them don't even know who Clint Eastwood is, but they've heard the music from the movie. And that's also a testament, maybe to any Omari Konate. May He rest in peace? Vivian Ho is a health economist at Rice. University and Baylor College of Medicine Marcus Davis owns the breakfast club, restaurant and hosts, fish, grits and politics Lisa Falkenberg. Is the Houston Chronicle's editor opinion? Vivian Marcus Lisa thanks very much have again weekend, Craig. Thank you. I know they're committing adultery against that man's wife is wrong and I or convenient adultery against that woman's husband and wrong and I shouldn't do it. It's not so we don't know what is right and wrong and what is sin in what is vice. None of that matters anymore member. You'll keep your religion out of my public square. Well this is what you get George Florida's what you get when you don't have any religion and know God and your Public Square. So congratulations libertarian. Anarchists this is exactly what that would look like in play in principle floyd repeatedly pleads with van at one point crying out for his mother and saying everything hurts. I wanted to catch you up on the very latest on what is happening here. In the Permian Basin due to the COVE NINETEEN CORONA VIRUS. As you know we are all affected by the pandemic the economy across the nation. And of course right here in the epicenter of oil and gas is taking a big financial hit so I wanted to begin with where oil is trading at an remember this as at recording time of this podcast. Wti is at twenty dollars and fourteen cents. A barrel. Now rig counts dropped dramatically last week. According to the weekly count from Baker Hughes the impact of cuts layoffs are starting to show more than half the weeks losses came here in the Permian Basin which lost twenty three rigs for account of three hundred eighty two now the US rig count dropped forty four to seven twenty eight. It was the largest single week. Drop since the bottom of last oil downturn according to the Houston Chronicle New Mexico the only other producing state with the triple digit recount lost three rigs down to one. Oh nine in other news. Pioneer Natural Resources. Ceo Scott Sheffield spoke to CNBC. Recently and said the current price downturn reminds him of nineteen eighty six and opposition to a settlement with the Saudis from companies like Exxon Mobil threaten the future existence of independent companies. He went on to say that it will take a long time to the market and the next on is an example of the oil industry. Heavyweights that WANNA see all independence. Go bankrupt and then pick up the scraps. He also predicted there will only be ten out of the seventy four independence left at the end of twenty twenty one that will have decent balance sheets once again. Those were the words. Scott Sheffield the CEO of Pioneer Natural Resources recently on CNBC and the layoffs continued. Hit our area hard pro. Petro notified the state Friday at plans to lay off three hundred eighty eight employees in its hydraulic fracturing division according to the Houston Chronicle slumber j. The Largest Oilfield Service Company in the world plans to cut up to thirty percent from its budget as oil prices continue to drop and cove nineteen cases rise. The company also expects to lay off workers and reduce compensation in North America Shumba. Jai Joins Chevron and numerous other companies in the energy industry who are cutting billions of dollars in response to the falling oil prices Kirk Edwards. Who is an odessa-based independent oil and gas producer wrote a letter to President trump that was printed in our local paper? The Odessa American in it he says the following to President trump quote. I asked President trump to immediately place. They've forty dollars per barrel tariff on Saudi oil coming into the United States. I ask you to quit defending Saudi Arabia with our troops and aircraft carriers and start defending your most critical domestic industry. The one that keeps US country moving with affordable gasoline and electricity the forty dollar TARIFF IS THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE. American energy producers. Were getting just two months ago versus the twenty dollar per barrel that we are getting this week that tariff would generate nearly one point two five billion dollars per month to the US government. The government can direct that revenue back to the oil producing states like Texas Louisiana New Mexico and Oklahoma in an effort to help those states. That are being massively impaired by the current dumping on Saudi Arabia filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Twenty dollar oil does nothing for the American energy producer. We need jobs and we need a price. We can economically drill for and twenty dollars per barrel. Certainly. Isn't it end quote once again that was from Kirk Edwards who is an odessa-based independent oil and gas producer? Writing a letter to president trump. That was permitted in our local paper. The Odessa American in Other News Governor Greg Abbott Expanded Quarantine Orders for travelers heading into Texas on Sunday any air traveler entering Texas from Miami Atlanta Detroit Chicago and the states of California in Washington must self quarantine for fourteen days at it said his original order which included air travel from New Orleans now includes any road travel from people entering Texas from Louisiana. History's most fascinating misquote

"Hey history lovers. I'm Mike Rosenwasser retro pod. A show about the past rediscovered. On April thirteenth, nineteen seventy the Apollo thirteen mission to the moon was rocked by an onboard explosion, the command module went dark earth was two hundred thousand miles away and astronaut radio Michigan troll, Houston. We have a problem. He was fairly calm for a man zipping through space with no curb to pullover to if they broke down and that phrase, Houston, we have a problem it became a cultural. Touchdown sportscaster sent politician said in books movies plays music. It's shorthand for saying something has gone awry, sometimes terribly. Except it's wrong. S historical misquotes, go Houston. We have a problem is one of the all time greats. And this is the story of how it came to be. And also how it didn't. Up in space that night after the explosion, astronauts, Jack swagger and James level did radio Michigan trolling use. As I say again blazer. Your problem? A little hard to hear. It's right there in the transcript, Houston, we've had a problem. So where did Houston we have a problem come from recently, the Houston chronicle identified the culprit, or at least claim to their story pointed a finger at the film Apollo thirteen. Starring Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard. It tells the dramatic story of how the three Apollo astronauts just barely survived the ordeal. This is Houston say again, please Houston. We have a problem. We have a main Buckby underbowled from cinematic point of view changing the phrase made for better filmmaking drop the word. Okay. It's just filler anyway and change the phrase from past tents to present to make it more urgent. One of the screenwriters. William Breuls junior takes credit for changing the line for the movie. He said, quote, the past perfect tense wasn't as dramatic. It's a satisfying explanation. Millions of people have watched Apollo thirteen and through the power of the film, and Tom Hanks and smart screen writing the new phrase caught on right? Well, not quite it. Turns out the phrase actually goes back even further. Nasa used it way back in nineteen eighty three as the title of its weekly radio program about space history. You can actually see pictures online of these old cassette tapes. The show was named space stories and special report number two to tell the story of Apollo thirteen. It was called Houston. We have a problem. But that's not even it it nineteen seventy four less than five years after the incident itself. Universal television produced a TV movie about the mission. Astronaut Jim Lovell hated it in Washington Post article he called it quote fictitious and in poor taste. What was the title of that movie Houston? We have a problem. Mike Rosen walled. City of Houston not recycling recyclables | Episode 28

"He thailand hey everyone. Welcome back to quality matters on your hostess. Darcy see chambers. I'm kyle chambers. Mico host also my husband in today's global economy quality l. a. t. matters benjamin franklin once quit the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sleekness of low price is forgotten quality matters is here to talk about all things quality so whether you're looking to improve your business getting ready for an audit or dealing with failed inspections actions tune-in check us out then give back to doing work that matters oh okay. I've got a couple of things going through my head. I need to remember <hes> so kyle said i have to address the shirt that i'm wearing my momma shark shirt <hes> this was a gift to me from my sister. My birthday in may however today is the first day of school for our kids. Two of them were in school wants still in day care. The middle one is in third grade elementary school. Go great elementary school. All schools are great but the older one is starting in junior high today. I have all the fields of start crying so i've been crying. I'll go for about a week or we're in secret since three days. <hes> and just you know he doesn't doesn't even know that he needs to be worried about junior high and what if he doesn't have anybody to sit with at lunch and one of the kids are mean to him so i have my momma shark shirt on because i mean yeah but that's total side note and completely unrelated to our quality <hes> and we have been doing many series on the iso standard kind of breaking down a little bit easier to understand <hes>. I want to go ahead and yeah. I think there's been somebody commenting on our youtube is that we're only do well. It was on the youtube but on lincoln okay somebody has been commenting about how the standard is vague and that helps contribute or put money in the pockets of consultants like kyle and i mean i wouldn't disagree. It's it's true it's true. It's true and i think has consented that statement but i didn't write it. That's the thing you know and we are going to be releasing podcasts. Oh i cast in a few weeks talk well that go into great detail about the iso standard how the standards are written and that is in fact a true statement however we didn't help ride it and kyle's purpose is really just to help people understand it and make their business more successful using the standard and that's what were about the vagueness but again this really have to have a consultant come in but <hes> the vagueness can go a long ways to help me out because it does yeah pick your poison which there's something to be said for right so <hes> we appreciate the comments. Keep on coming. If some something to say good or bad i mean let's talk about so we're taking a break from our mini series because i was scrolling through facebook over the weekend as i often do and and i came across an article from the houston chronicle <hes> about the solid wastes departments it's my guess of houston and the article was about how the solid waste management department diverted two point six million pounds of recyclables to the landfill during the first five months of the year. You're going to say i've got my notes article down here so oh i've gotta look at it to refer to it yeah and it was an internal audit well. I guess k. h. O. u. which is a news outlet here kind of broke the story and prompted the internal audits <hes> and then the internal audit confirmed what kato you have reported. It's not that i know much about what's going on right now but if it's the news organization breaking the story that tells me that the internally didn't have the checking processes that they needed an internal processes to make sure things were going according to plan. I don't know the sentence says because i wanna make anybody mad the audit comma which which confirms reporting by k. h. O. u. That prompted the internal probe. Comma revealed the mishandling of recycling go so yeah so that's that's what it sounds like so their internal auditor. I hope i say her name right shinola queen. She's an internal ever linked and pulled up. Ah she's a senior editor at the city of houston looks like she's been an auditor for twelve years for different places. <hes> has an n._b._a. Great experience very well qualified just based on what we pulled up here on links and real quick <hes> and okay so. I don't really know what's direction. I wanna go i. It looks like there were no corrective. Actions issued <hes> now like that okay. Let me see oh man. I'm gonna be that they didn't issue any corrective actions that they simply conducted the audit because this happens a lot people find the problem i mean she usually this is a common problem. If that's what occurred here is people conduct the audit they find the problems they fix them. There's no corrective action and we've talked before about fixing thing it in a corrective action completely not the same thing on the most fundamental level. If all you're doing is fixing shane okay. We'll we're just going to move move on and we think this is why a corrective action says no. We're going to identify the root cause. We went to a wine. We think the root causes to recall those. I the advice people to go step further until we didn't find it in the first place wanting to know why the root causes wasn't already from rain article. It looks like as things this go with tax payer type. Doll you know education city. There's not enough trucks. The trucks are old. There's not enough people people. There's a high turnover rate. It's all those kinds of things are the problem but it does say <hes> that she wrote she being the internal auditor that supervisors at the city's operations quote were provide an ample opportunity to correct driver behavior fear of mixing material or improperly disposing of collected recyclables including the quote including after an april twenty fourth memo memo directing compliance it goes on to say the supervisors did not take any corrective actions even after the memo went out okay so this is a prior to the internal audit but but if you identify something like that <hes> you need you really need a corrective action. It's a it's a huge deal because it's so many people whether they liked to you like say say they just want to fix it and you assume you know. One of the problem happened but a corrective action really requires you to dig down understand really. What is the problem tom and not only how are we gonna fix this issue. But what are what changes to our system. Are we gonna make it never happens again brian. I'm i'm assuming i don't know that they're not actually i so nine. Thousand one certified. She didn't going audits required and like. I said they talked about the aging of the fleet. It looks like they're expected to get ninety new garbage and recycling trucks through april of next year. Okay okay so that's coming. <hes> and i guess this is since the audit happened. I don't know i don't know when everything was done. They the city has rented rented. Some trucks fired a private company to handle part of the recycling nice good <hes> they city council has also agreed to hire <hes> one of the city's <unk> disaster debris contractors to help collect junk waste cleanup a illegal dumping sites okay well. That's also oh yeah puts a burden on have to clean up where people are illegally dumping. When i was in charge of an environmental program you know one of the problems we had said. We didn't have anything anything hazardous but we did have the possibility of you know. Hazardous elements in some of our production waste so rather than just dumping it all in the dumpster. We actually took a preventative step in to prevent anything like this similar in ever occurring is. We got a totally separate dumpster for what they call class. One industrial waste so class like any kind of production ways that maybe it's got like you know cadmium in it or maybe it's got cobalt or some of these things just don't want on regular landfill and so we just took a preventative step to do it but not a lot folks go that far she wanted with dumping sites like this and <hes> what was i gonna say now forgot oh so also they have to keep up with their trash schedules so they their employees employs are already working six or seven days a week long hours into the dark so that contributed 'cause they weren't really see like what's what and then and what i also noted the very end of the article. This article was on august eighth by the way so very <hes> that i guess partial loads roads were left in the truck at the end of the day instead of taking it to the landfill or dump or wherever so then when different employees would come out they would just assume it's all regular trash right and <hes> so that was one thing that queen the internal auditor recommended that we've got to do something. She said they need to institute a process to identify partial loads. Rasa sounds like she's doing so that. We know if something's left in the track. What is it left on the truck at. I think that sounds like she really did a great job on it there. I mean really does but again what they're dealing with. Here's as you know we. We might want to get all upset about the city's mismanaging things that but i'm telling you this. This is nothing new so many organizations deal with stuff. What in particular is nothing new. You mean like this right here. You know we'll just virginia says it didn't have initiated a process for checking measuring which is again is terminology analogy but she says they didn't have process for checking the <hes> the truck at the end of the shift right you know and so they're talking about. Guys guys are working so much and i get it. I mean we see the guys come out in the mornings too big partner. That's houston but i mean guys were working working their tails off. They are i i mean. They were really working their butts. It's a little bit funny. I just have say how many times we talk about our tax cut. Look i appreciate people that work hard. I hi this man. I think that's just an easy example but they don't have the process to check these things and it's so incredibly common because you think you know what needs to be checked and you think you know what the next person will think and you think you know with the next person will know and and you don't <hes> you wind up with like two camps of people got the camp on the left where they just kind of wing it and they they get it done and actually actually works fairly well a lot of the time then you got the camp on the right where they over analyze in over document and they've got one hundred different. K._p._i.'s literally literally sometimes over a hundred different goals of their job to keep track of and they have noted every detail of everything actually the when i first got involved with quality i was asked asked to write a procedure on how to make coffee not joking. They've kinda wish you'd right one for me but that's that's the blessing extreme that people go so it's like you wind up in these two camps and most organizations actually thrive somewhere in that middle eighty percent ask for anything so is just you know it's frustrating to see but i mean really sounds like she did a heck of a job on this <hes> this audit here i think so i would like to try to the contact her and so on i don't know with her being an employee of the city if she would be able to get on and talk about i mean i wonder what other internal audits on on her hands that she could share with us <hes> i guess the mayor got involved as well <hes> and it says says that the mayor has said that employees found to have mixed trash and recycling could be suspended or fire fired <hes> so so far the director of the solid waste management department hasn't said what's going to happen. The mayor says maybe these guys will get suspended or fired. Yes yeah i agree. I mean they didn't have a process written out for them. They know probably that it's separate unless it's left in the truck. Then you don't know what's what <hes> <hes> but my question is what about the supervisors that got a memo april knew about it and move we conduct an audit <hes> interviews and what someone said is objective evidence so what someone says is absolute objective evidence. You can have completely verbal processes. There's nothing wrong with it nothing against him but the problem that you're going to run into is if you don't have enough things documented that you too much confusion fusion even kind of good oh boy mentality <hes> so then the question that people ask and i get acid slot will. How do i know what to document risk risk. You just think about it. If this process goose to crap how bad's it can be well. I would think anything evolving taxpayer money. He is a risk could be but let's let's look at the coffee example. If the people making coffee in office just do a terrible piss poor job of it could the business shutdown. Could they get sued. Oh no. It's incredibly incredibly low risk and if the coffee's crap will you'll know with the first stepdad's easy to detect the stuff. That's really scary. Are those risks where it's hard to detect and there's a big impact when you get those things combined together i mean you're talking talkin about really big issues. So what do you consider the risk in this situation well. Let's let's look here. The the one good example that we have is the trashing left in the doc in the truck at the end of the shift and then the next <hes> next shift coming in well. I i've never worked trash truck but i can't imagine that the first thing i'm gonna do wanna a truck in the morning is examined. What's already in there. I'm probably going to assume it got emptied the night before <hes> i mean so so if if that's kind of the thing going that's automatically hard to detect so any risks is hard to detect it is a scary one because it means it can creep up and bite ya and you didn't even know it. Was there mhm all right so the moment. They knew this was occurring. That should have been a red flag. I feel like they knew this was crank because it makes sense to me when i read it. If the the truck is not full we're not gonna make separate trip to the landfill. That's going to cost us time and energy and money go. I i mean it seems like that's a pretty standard procedure. It can my head it could be but as i say that right article guys showing up in the morning they don't know when they show but the condition was day before immediately <unk>. Some detectability is an issue. How often does this happen. I don't know i would imagine that this could be at least fifty percent occurrence because it's either full or not full so we'll just call it. Fifty percent of the time says you've got fifty percent. Maybe even more because what you said is a good point join if it's only like ten percent twenty percent full. Maybe we're not gonna take it out there. So i mean this could be occurring like eighty. Percent of the time is hard to know how full it is or isn't when you start the day and you may not even know with in it until you examine it and then you have to trust you guy like filled up properly right so now we've got you know it's it's hard to detect <hes> it's going to happen frequently and now how bad of an issue is it. I'm not actually sure i'd i love to know more information. If anyone knows anything about like how big of a deal is it if recycling was taken to a regular landfill cost us. I don't know how much it costs but they did say it was two point six million pounds of recyclables that went and that counts <hes> makes up eleven point point four percent other recycling tonnage from january to me okay well. That's a fairly fairly high dollar volume and their stuff isn't cheap to dispose <music> of it's actually really fascinating the way that they'd suppose of all of this garbage that there's a lot of work that goes into getting stuff properly and if you do it properly properly in twenty thirty years they can actually build homes on top of it. Perfectly safe is like that's the level of care that you know is supposed to be going going into these things in some cases so we've got you know it's hard didn't act is going to happen frequently and somewhat severe so when we actually do a official risk analysis. If you wanna put like a number to it we do like a one to ten score. How bad is it one to ten. How often does occur one to ten you know how hard is it to detect one to ten and so in this this case you know if you multiply those numbers together i mean they're all at or greater than five. You wind up with us. What one twenty five so the point is if you actually do risk analysis is you apply apply multiply these numbers to gathering with a call the r._p._m. The rich product number if it's less than a hundred most companies agree to accept the risk if it's greater later than hundred we probably need to do something to address the risks and serve again the higher and higher. You go the more more more. We probably need to address the risk. This i mean from my quick. Estimation is definitely something that should be addressed well. They do have some other numbers. I don't know if it's helpful <hes> she found from the during the audited period which i gather was from january to may <hes> five hundred thirty two mishandling incidents including a hundred and six <music> after the memo was sent out in april to the supervisor so wait about twenty percent of them yeah after after the supervisors that sounds like almost nothing changed. Is i mean it's almost look almost a little bit got. Curb curbed under pressure to get the taxpayer pay mitra. I mean even as in our neighborhood. We have private trash company that are h._o._a. Pays it's an on the neighborhood pages all the time. My trash hasn't gotten picked up. My trash has got picked up of course as you guys know. We don't completely trust our trash. Guys are trash gets picked up brian earlier. You know so i can imagine what the city of houston gable or calling and complaining my trash hasn't been picked up. You know supervisors say and do whatever it takes to get the job done. Which is something. I'm sure you have heard out in the field. Several times supervisors say just get the job done we. They say we'll fix it. After we don't care the cost of you don't do it. According to procedure we get someone checking in on the back end. Just get a gone yeah so yeah. The other stuff definitely happens but you know i guess kind of finish up. Here is like you know what assurance is <hes>. You don't know what to document and it sounds like they didn't have stuff documented senator joe. How would they know they needed to document a process on this well again the question people ask. We'll how what's document 'cause. I'm obviously i'm not gonna write a procedure on making coffee right <hes> although if you were i could tell you some pointers but it's not a not a high risk so this is a high risk. It was so if it's a high risk documented. That's it yeah i don't know. I don't know how many internal auditors the city has either because as you mentioned like this was an audited until the news side. Hey look at this so i mean if she's the only internal auditor for the city. I can't even imagine all the things that needed to be. She herself is probably under. I agree a lot of pressure. No i <hes> actually couple a couple years ago was talking to someone with the city of houston because they were looking at getting their particular <hes> department thousand certified <hes> so i know that at least at some point in the past they've entries process but it's it's interesting but it does sound like she did a great job and it sounds like they knew knew about the issue. I mean one hundred one incidence. They're they've actually got a good record keeping system yet which is a great step. Yeah is a great step in the right direction. It's my quit like if you know exactly how many incidents there were people all right so that's our little break in the miniseries as again as kyle briefly mentioned. If anybody knows anything about this feel free to get a hold of us left to talk about. Let's talk and i might actually see if i get a hold of her. Oh yeah and have her on totally. I doubt she would provide any other reports for us no but it just about the working area that we've not been involved with yeah. It'd be a lot of fun all right. Thanks for less than an awesome.
