UK leader: Britain at “perilous turning point,” scraps back-to-work drive, tightens restrictions amid virus resurgence

"The prime minister of the UK announced new pandemic restrictions to help get the Corona virus under control. Mr Speaker. We will spare no effort in developing vaccines treatments. New forms of mass tested. But unless we palpably make progress, we should assume that the restrictions I've announced will remain in place. For perhaps six months. Great. Britain had been making the opposite of progress after a summer when life largely returned to normal Corona virus numbers in the UK Rose, NPR London correspondent Frank Langfitt is living all of this. Hey there, Frank. Hey, Steve. What of the restrictions and how big a difference is it? Yeah, it's one of things is sort of a curfew for pubs, bars and restaurants are going to have to close at 10 P.m. Bar's Johnson also telling people to work from home if they can to avoid spreading the disease, which is a reversal of the government's position. This is coming after we're up to about 6000 Day in terms of cases, and this is what Johnson also had to say in the House of Commons today. This is the moment when we must act. If we can curb the number of daily infections on DH, reduce the reproduction rate toe one Then Then we we can can save save lives lives protected protected in in a a chest chest on on the the most most vulnerable vulnerable and and shelter shelter the the economy. economy. And And what what he's he's saying saying here. here. Steve Steve is is the the UK UK needs needs to to do do this this now now to avoid the kind of lock down that we saw back in March, which devastated a lot of businesses here, Okay, reducing the reproduction rate to one. That's a statistic he wants each new person on average tow infect less than one new person, although just saying the pub should close it. 10. Is that really a big enough change to make a difference? No, Steve. Most people don't seem to say that I see it that way. And I will include my daughter, Catherine in that she actually works our neighborhood pub and I talked about it this morning. And she says, you know, Late at night. People do get drunk, They become affectionate and there's a lot of ignoring of social distancing, so it will help to close down a little bit earlier, But last call there was at 11 o'clock anyway, so we'll be cutting time, much in that in that pub, and she doesn't think it's going to make that much of a difference, nor, frankly, I think to a lot of people here in England who have heard these measures today. I guess it does make some difference of people do work from home instead of going into the office, if somewhere and that will help. I mean, I think that I think that that will help some a lot of people that we're not going in right now, anyway, a lot of people out of convenience and otherwise they're staying out of London. What's the scientific community saying about these measures? I think something that it needs to go further than what the Gover what Boris Johnson is talking about. Other measures could include no mixing of households or a locked down for a couple of weeks that would try to put the brakes on the virus. It's clear that the government's deeply worried about the economy and doesn't want to go that far right now because the economy's been improving, actually Steve in the past couple of 23 months, and it doesn't want that stop. Now you go into hibernation, so to speak for another six months, according to Boris Johnson, is the country ready, though, if there is a big second wave It's better In some ways, you know, they figured out ways to use steroids to cut the fatality rate. And so that's been very positive. But on the testing front, we don't have the kind of testing system that we hope to many many months ago and cure Starmer. He's the leader of the opposition Labour Party, and today this is what he had to say to Johnson. We warned the promise two months ago that testing need to be fixed by the autumn, but the government didn't listen. They pretended it wasn't a problem. They didn't act quickly enough. Now the testing system isn't working just when we need it. And I got to tell you, Steve, this is a critique you here across the country. Most people I know are stunned that after all these months, the government has not been able to build a testing system that will meet demand.

It's GonNa be really fun over the three days that we're doing this. We've got kind of a trade show section. We've got a content section. We're GONNA be giving away a ton of stuff and that sue it Nikki closer will be live here in the studio Kinda just introducing a all the classes sue out was just decided a couple of minutes ago. WHO's GonNa do for closing keynote keynote live so we're so most of it is prerecorded, we will have live host, but the content that's come out of this is off the charts I'm really excited. In you when you say you're talking about sue brice. Right, yes? Yes right. These Subaru you should put it in front of her name. Yeah. you WANNA have you set the stage on just a portrait masters for the folks that may not have heard about the conference? What what so Thank you for inviting me to the last one I was I was there in Arizona. Last. Yeah. It was. It was that's the word. It was a blast. Folks that may not have heard of the conference described what what this sort of you know the the soul of the conference is intended to be win it's real versus now when. Virtual or digital doesn't it seem like that was ten years ago. Does right. It's I feel twenty years older I, know. Like as my hair. So the Portrait Masters Conference, it's really a boutique conference in that we have only we cap it at five hundred people We have only nine speakers, one stage, one room. There's no breakout classes we really tried to simplify it and we wanted to give people inexperienced that they never forget. So we added so many different things to this conference that you won't see at other places. For example, we put shooting days in the. Trade show. So some of which are sponsored can have a couple of shooting base Pro Photo will have a couple of shooting bays and basically, and we do a bunch of our own. So basically, it's a model backdrop lighting and you just go and shoot and people went absolutely crazy fort when we when we launched it at it, really we kind of created like a Disneyland photographers almost where you could go in. You could talk to the vendors you could shoot, you could touch. You could feel kind of the things that we love about trade shows. Right you have that opportunity to to touch feel products but also like you could read a camera camera body from any of the vendors, the camera houses and Kinda go around the show and and shoot the networking part of it, which this is one that suit came up with but a red ribbon for someone that hadn't been there to our conference. Before if you're wearing a red ribbon, it was to show everybody else. Hey, come say hi and their brand new they don't know anybody and it was. Just, it ended up being such an incredible experience for people because you go to a trade show, you thought the Portrait Masters amazing show that you wanted to go to it's it's an expensive ticket it's eighteen hundred dollars, but it includes all your your meals, and some other things that we we do. But for the Red Ribbon, it's just amazing 'cause I've I saw a dozen times people just may be sitting by themselves or walking by themselves and other attendants would go and say, hey, how are you come sit with me and and it was just that networking part that that really kind of came out of it, which is really cool.

Breath work to Heal Our Heart

"I want to introduce you to the breath work pattern that we are going to be using during this journey. Remembering that this breath is for transformation it's for release for letting go. It's different from relaxation and it is more continual. It is deeper and it is more profound. So find yourself lying down on a yoga mat or on your bed wherever you find it is most comfortable for you. Keeping your legs stretched out in front of you and less you struggle with lower back pain. Then you're free to bend them up. Having your palms facing upwards. And just let yourself. Be At feel into the ground. Having. Your eyes closed palms facing up. So important before. That we just check in with our hearts. Open our hearts. I love to say to myself before I breathe. Thank you I love you. Thank you I. Love You. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for showing up and doing this work. And I love you. It's amazing what happens when we speak softly and gently and kindly to ourselves it's so beautiful. It's so nourishing. So. What we're GONNA do is we're gonNA start our three breath pattern. So this breath is done through the mouth only. So the technique that we use is through the mouth only. So WanNa take one hand place your left hand on your belly place your right hand on your chest. When we actually go to do the patterns were not going to be putting our hands on our body. They'll be at our sides, but I just want to get you familiar with how it feels. So it's a three breath pattern and it sounds like this. It is all through the mouth not the knows. The first breath is when we suck in the air from our belly. The second breath is when we suck in our air from the chest. And the third ex hale is all through the mouth. So, what are you ready just come along with me Just keep breathing. You may notice your. Minds, getting a little busy. You may notice yourself getting dizzy right away. That's totally normal. Just keep breathing. Now. Place your hands down at your side. That's it. Just, keep reading you are safe to breathe your safe to feel. Today. We are working on opening up our hearts vase for healing. So, often, we have a closed down hearts potentially we've experienced so much heartbreak so much pain so much stress in our lives where. Sometimes. You just don't feel safe to be in our heart and live from our heart. And I just want you to take a deep breath right now. I just want you to feel in your heart space. Feel into the power, the frequency the love. That is so abundantly there. Everything becomes so much more clear when we are living from that heart centered place.

LIVE From Home: Here We Go!

"Ought. To think this is a podcast about politics race and culture from a POC. Perspective I may know Hosa and I'm who you're a low and welcome to in the thick live from home I mean I had to commute from one bedroom to another to get here but I'm here on time. I'm here on time and I'm all present for you. Actually. We're so happy that you're joining us. So thrilled we actually thought we had this big plan for twenty twenty like all you. We were GONNA take the show on the row. We were going to be meeting you in person hugging dance. We're going to dance onstage maybe drink a beer or two afterward. But you know the pandemic happened, a lot of sadness happened a lot of rage happened, and so we're going to be virtual. We're talking about the twenty twenty election along with the letter other things including the POC vote. And you know it's really super important. So just because we're not out there in person doesn't mean we don't have to have these conversations and you know gymnasts we got to all stars tonight to all-stars please give workers. Welcome to Jamila King She's a reporter and host of the Mother Jones podcast she's joining us from her family's In Oakland California joke. Greeting. From apocalypse I doing house the dog. Oh man out there. It's rough. I'm looking outside of my window right now and the sky is. Orange you know. It's kind of tricky but I think it's real. Yeah. It's it's really are out here I you guys. All right. Let's give a poop roof to. Elite. Contributing opinion writer with the times and he's He's not live from the suburbs from Alexandria where we crazy. Live from home life from home or my kids are in the room and I'm praying to God they don't come in and start yelling. We crazy and Drinking Chai in. Coffee hoping that Jamila is. Safe. My home state burning I'm trying to come back to you guys new. York. One piece. Hey. Guess Co host to of in the thick, not only all stars but they've they've guest cohost. So awesome that you guys just say I was thinking about this this podcast years ago and we called so much of what's happening in America right nine we actually have the records to prove it just like the audio records of trump. We have the records to prove that we called a lot of this four years ago two, thousand, sixteen I feel like it's five because I've aged horrible fifty. In our minds in two thousand fifteen but it came to fruition in two, thousand, sixteen but. But. Yeah we did we and one of the things that we talked about which we all have talked about is the role of the media and how you guys are getting it wrong in. So many ways we talk about that but let's start off with our first topic so. It was twenty twenty. I think. You know every single one of us is battling some level of low grade or high-grade. Depression? You know he's just kind seeping in for me. The end of the summer is really hard moving into yet another season and still being in lockdown You know also just the weight of these decades, centuries of racism and injustice in this country. and that is kind of the backdrop for our twenty twenty-nine election update. We are now less than sixty days away from the November election I know, right so both the trump and binding campaigns are really upping their games. We think, right. We'd Hoke we know the Republicans are the Democrats. This election season but hey, the pandering has started as well. I don't know if guys have seen this actually was one of the first people notified about this campaign video by by Joe Biden people that are associated with the Joe. Biden campaign it's a campaign salsa song called. Biden. Muscles. Things. Just just. Coming off. Applaud keeps going. By. By then? Okay. Okay. Okay. So Oh God that's going to be playing all over Kissimmee Florida. I'm telling you they're going all in I know the people that created it. Very committed they just basically put Biden on the hook for that stuff right there. Yeah ecological in. Los Angeles. Off The detention facility. So his own campaign song is saying he's about to do that. Yeah. So and then the other thing I just wanted to add. Yaas who Maria interviewed. And frontline, we talk about this I think all the time you know the Obama deportation policy she was named to the transition team of Biden's campaign and all the immigrants, rights, activists, immigrant lawyers that I know I know you guys have been following. This are just there's a story in the hill people need to read it. They are up in arms about destroy. So there's a lot of questions about the Democrats right. Right it's it's yours to lose and I have nothing personally against Cecilia when yours But I did interview her and it was a moment that was very challenging Was You know? Talk me down 'cause right now I'm feeling like the. Vote. We are combined this immense electorate and it's like. Are you kidding me twenty twenty? I've been talking about this since the first time I covered politics in what in the early nineteen nineties. POC voters taken for granted.

"All amazing tiny house. People that just wrote their story of why they decided to do this, and there are some amazing means. It is actually the the single piece of writing. I've done to this point that I'm most proud I loved her. so, but it is not just about. You know so congratulations, but I think it's a great resource turning tiny. Don't where you can find sure you can Google and find it. That's the one I go, and then there was a book of when I started doing this called. It was called tiny house on a small planet. For Small House on a tiny cleaner I love that book yet, and it has so much great info in a lot of it's a lot of it is. The philosophy. It really wasn't about how to build and I. Learned some things like one of the exercises I learned like out a get ready to move into. A tiny house came from that book where you suggested you right? You put a note on every door in your house and every time you go into that room. You write down why you went into that route over a month two months three months. You start to notice. Trends. You know you their rooms in your house. If you live in a big traditional house, there's you never use. The Whitey, you need that room. There's nothing in there so it. It led us to understand that we were spending most time in the kitchen. The the living space wherever TV was. We were together and the better, and that was it and we really weren't using lot of the rest of.

"Foot House. That we did. We didn't even know what we're GonNa do with the time. We thought we might rent outs, but we ended up falling in love with your neighborhood and. How close we were to downtown, so we ended up just living in that that hundred square foot house, but we would never done that. If we had never built tiny house, he wouldn't have even known that that was an option. Did. You find navigating living in two houses to be challenging. For us, it worked out fine, and because we built our tiny house. Kind of intentionally to be sort of a three season house. We knew we were never going to live in it. In the worst of the winter of course winter North Carolina's never go worse, but we still knew that it wasn't going to be that place so for us. It really wasn't that big a transition Vata transition. We just use the tiny house. Now is a getaway place to go place. In we're glad we have but seven hundred square foot house. Absolutely fit our lifestyle. It's not too big. Is exactly what we wanted made it exactly what we wanted, so I'm grateful that we have. In our lives. Yeah, absolutely I'm. Just smiling because it's like I I feel like I'm so parallel. To where you're at like we've. We've done the tiny house thing. We're also in a like. Seven hundred fifty square foot condo in Burlington which is like. It's small. It's challenging. Surprising leads like tiny houses actually easier to be in because it's way better thought out than this place. But It it, it is interesting like. I, feel like you've also. Kind of. Financially, it seems been able to open up your your life to more possibilities because you've lived below your means that you've you've done the tiny house thing. That that was always the goal, and I hope we've succeeded in that. It's it's given up so many more opportunity using you mentioned at the very beginning. Right now we're living in Decatur Georgia because Matt decided to go to law school. Again we would have never done that if we had never built a tiny house. You know we're not? We're not in our twenties. We you know this is not a decision that we're graduated from college any house. Went to law school this over a decade that we have come to this conclusion, so. You know the fact that we can even dig this is.

"Lighthouse revealed a secret to us that warm summer's Day in one, thousand, nine, hundred, six, one that began to make the pieces click together. When that recording ran out, the reel to reel player was left, spinning an empty spool mind reeled from the revelation. My father had a sister. A sister died in the very same room. He was in a way. It was almost poetic, if not horrifying. But the sister madeline also was a race from the family's history. Thinking back, my father had never spoken about her. Even the painting in his former study excluded her from the portrait she was the secret. Shame whitewashed away in an effort to forget. But she wouldn't be forgotten. Consumed by the darkness both in life, and in death she had returned with the other entities of the house Leonese imaginary friend. Abigail was one in the same as Madeleine. The darkness that lived in lighthouse had corrupted her, and now she had latched onto leany for who knows what purpose. Hearing all this. It was too much to bear while I stood. There captivated fingers digging into my palms. When it was playing. Once the recording had run its course. I ran from the dark room, a bounded up the stairs through the pantry and the rest of the house straight outside. Leaning against the Ancient Red Oak tree I was sick to my stomach. I hadn't eaten all day, so nothing came up with Bile and burn my throat as if my body was trying to expel what I just learned. I look back to the house. saw the man in hat. Standing in the window, the third floor in the same place I had. I seen him all those years ago. He smiled. Knowing that he had helped expose me to a secret, but the family had tried to forget. I couldn't stand it anymore. Lighthouse was a stain on the soul of the world, and I had to get away. I had to keep my family away to keep them safe. I would move to the ends of the Earth, if I had to keep moving to stay ahead of the man in the hat and whomever else, the house sent for me. I ran I ran back to my car and when it didn't start because it was still overheated, I kept running. Iran, until I eventually found my way back home days later, and hugged my son until Chris to prime me off. I was never going back to lighthouse again. But. That's not how it works, does it? On that day in one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty six, he was thirteen years since my father died thirteen years since lighthouse had claimed another soul. And it was hungry again, but the house was patient. Bided its time until the moment was right. It reached its tendrils into its next victim, continuing to claw its way inside until finally. I snapped. On a cold winter's Day in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety three. I came back to lighthouse. Seven years had passed, and though I swore never to return. Something tragic happened caused me to break. My Self imposed exile. LEANEY was dead..

"It is now August twenty. Fourth. Nineteen thirty eight. It has been a few days since what happened and. I. I still don't know how to explain it. What what I saw was just. Not Possible! I think my time in this House is somehow affected my judgment and clouded my medical training because I saw. I saw something in that room with us. Something was there whispering into her ear. I can still hardly believe it, and my mind refuses to even consider the possibilities ramifications of what that means. I've avoided seeing her the past few days, but I'm due back in a few hours to speak with the Middle Child. Who did not wish? Into morale I feel like he may be holding the key to answer some of those. What are you doing? With me than snap out of it often. The floorboard creaking didn't wake me up I'd be dead. She would've stopped me right in the heart. Please come down. Don't tell me to calm down. Did you see she did she try to kill me I thought you said the sharp utensils were locked up. It was a pair of pruning sears. Can you believe it seems right to murder me? Stop at Dorothy. Just stop it. There's nothing wrong with her with our little girl all right? You have to do something about this. There is something inside of her. That thing is not my madeleine. You hear me, it's not. I. Don't know what it is, but it's not her. If you don't do something to help her soon, so help me are. Awfully. Honey. You don't know what you're saying. Let me. You. Your real family. Meddling. Do you know what you tried to do last night? And I would do it. Get it. Get it to go. Again, she's sitting in with my. With yes, sorry Henry and your twelve. It's Okay Henry. You can talk to him. Yes, what can you tell me about your sister? She's my best friend. They are very close. You love your sister. I can tell. I want you to know that I'm trying to help her. All of us are. Do you understand that? Yes. Does your sister. Tell you about her friends the ones she sees their the house with us. Have you seen them as well? Go on now. Sometimes, do they talk to? You also know I. Don't want them to. They scare me. It's okay, sometimes the unknown a scary, even the me. Does she tell you what they say to her? Sometimes, what does she tell you? One tells her to do bad things, but things to you to your family I don't know just. Things and does she do them? Sometimes like with your hand the other night, and with what she did your father last night. I guess. How is your hand? By the way it's going to scar, but it's getting better. I helped him change bandages twice a day. Does it hurt well? I'm sorry to hear that I'm sure we'll stop soon enough though Henry. Do you know why she does these things why they tell her to do them? I don't know why they tell her by I. Know I. She does them. Because she wants to live with them. And the dark, and do you know where the dark is? Do you want to live with them in the dark well. I'm glad to hear that Henry. You want to help your sister, don't you? Yes, good, because we need your help to help out madeline, okay, Gal. Her name is Abigail her middle name is Abigail for some reason Henry and Madeleine have a game where they call each other by their names. She goes Michael and he calls her job. They've been doing it for years. One of those things siblings. Do you I suppose she going to be okay? You're not going to take her away, are you? Well, you're a growing boy so I'm sure you understand how serious this is your sister is. She's not well okay and her outbursts keep getting worse and worse and we're afraid. She's going to hurt someone, even herself. Considering what happened last night. I may need to recommend. She Go away for a bit, but only so we can figure out how to treat her. Do you understand yes? I'm going to ask you something. That is very important. Okay, okay. Is there something that we're missing something that? Maybe we don't know or haven't heard. That can possibly help us i. don't think so. Take a moment to think about it. Okay, if anything comes to mind well. I heard her say once the, Chew. Oh. It's metal and she. She's gone. What do you mean gone? She's not here I was watching her on, but then one minute she was there and the next. She was gone with your father I know. Where did you see her last? Well? When we were in the study and she was reading, and then she was gone then. Her. White House will return after a word from our sponsors. These are crazy times be living. "Five. opened my eyes. And, he was still there. Tipping his hat as he smiled. I quickly moved back from the window, replacing the curtain again. I didn't want to see him anymore did I want him to see me. Over the coming days. It didn't matter any time I. Close My eyes I saw him standing there smiling at me. A byproduct of my imagination. But it wasn't long before he sprung from my mind and started to appear in my everyday life. In the aisles of the grocery store hallways at at work outside Kevin. School on the street corner as I drove by, the man in the hat was back and he wanted me to notice him. After few days of this I couldn't stand it anymore. I called Jan and asked if we could move my appointment up. Jen listened and did her best to try to comfort me about it, but Persson reason didn't help. His reappearance back in my life me to my core and my usual coping mechanisms were not helping. So Jan suggested something unorthodox. Perhaps you're seeing him. Is your mind's unconscious way of letting? You know you need closure? She told me. Closure for. I asked her you father's death. Your repressed childhood your guilt over leaving your family behind in your new life. She said. Perhaps it's time you went back home to confront your fears, so you can put them behind you once and for all. Maybe if you look hard enough, you might find some answers the questions you seek. Questions I asked. About the House it's history your family. You said Your father didn't talk much about his family before you moved into lighthouse. Maybe a few learned more about them. These things won't bother you as much maybe if you learn about this man in the hat who he is. Maybe, he will go away. I rejected the thought the moment she said it. But as I left my session and saw the man in the hat, waiting to tip his hat toward me on my way to the parking lot. I reconsidered. At night I debated it the pros and the cons to try to come up with another solution. But none came to mind. And the thought of seeing him every day for the rest of my life ruining the piece I had created for myself was too much to bear. For the sake of my family, my Chris and my little Kevin I knew what I had to do. It was time to go back to lighthouse. lighthouse will return after these messages. The road back to lighthouse was not an easy one, though only a few hundred miles from my new home drive was long arduous. My car, usually reliable in all conditions broke down along the turnpike on my journey there the repairs were going to take a few days so I left it with a mechanic and took a loner for the rest of the route. The loner was not nearly as reliable as my car and was prone to overheating. I had to refill the water and let it cool down every few hours. The stopping and starting was grading on my nerves. I was anxious to just get there already to be done with my visit, but vehicles were not making it any easier on me. Nor was my family. I called my mother before I left letting her know that. I was coming for a visit. She was cold over the phone on interested in hearing from her eldest daughter, but agreeing to let me stop by. She hung up before I had the chance to tell everyone would get there. I guess it was going to be a surprise. By the time I pulled into the driveway. The car was on its last legs. Smoke was billowing from beneath the hood, and rather than attempting to make it the last half mile to the house. I just pulled over and left it there. White House looming in the not so far distance. I walked toward it slowly apprehension taking hold of me. Ten years had passed since I had last seen house, but from the way things looked. It May as well have been fifty. The grounds of the house were in disarray. The great lawn filled with tall weeds in neglect, the red oak tree out front, though still a massive presence was dying. It's withered branches twisting downward. Lighthouse still stood on the bluff, a dark shape against the gray sky, the house itself was no better with peeling paint at every corner and Lou shutters, hanging off their hinges. If I hadn't known any better I would have thought it to be abandoned. The House finally reflected what I always thought of it. Rotten and neglected. When I reached the porch, the steps creaked underneath me and I held my breath. I wasn't ready to face my family, or whatever waited for me in lighthouse. I had no choice I was already there. I knocked on the door before I lost more of my nerve and wait it. Was An unusually long time of no one answering before I knocked again. I was a bit nervous that something was wrong. That something had happened to my mother or to lean. But the second knock did the trick beyond the door. I heard some muffled cursing. Has someone struggled to unlock it? When the door screeched open I was surprised to find an older woman in a wheelchair that I did not recognize answering it. Wasn't until she spoke that I realized that this was an a stranger, but my mother aged as much as the house itself. I was taken aback and couldn't respond to her first inquiry. Having missed it completely. But her second, more forceful and angrier brought me back to reality. What are you want? She growled ready to close the door in my face. Mom It's me. It's Tara. She gave me lingering once over, but instead of responding she just rolled backward way from the door, and into the bowels of the House I took that as my unspoken mutation to come in I pushed the door open standing on the threshold between my old life and my new. I hesitated before stepping in realizing that I still had a choice. But the second I went in the choice was made. Instantly my body tensed and I felt that dread long since forgotten. Wash over me again. I imagined the man in the hat behind me, placing his hands on my shoulder, says a welcome home gesture. I shivered. Close the God. Damn door! You're letting the air in came my mother's voice from the other room I did, as she commanded and slowly walked after her. Being back in lighthouse was worse than I had imagined. Every negative emotion I had toward it was amplified, and every voice in my head rang out, begging me to leave. But I was back in uninviting, embrace, and I got the sense. It was all too happy to see me following my mother's voice through the House. I walked past my father's study. The door was shut, and what part of me wanted to look inside?.

Being is how it was early. February I should have been in class. My mother was. Of who I was when I found her in the scenario. I startled her out of midday stupor an empty bottle of Chardonnay by her side on one of the long couches. Her Glassy eyes were unfocused in the sharp sunlight, and at first she confused me for Leney. When I helped her sit up and told her it was me. She shook her head as if to try to shake drunk way her hands, cold and Clammy, reached out for me and kept my face. A smile appeared as she kissed my forehead, telling me she was happy. I came home. Until her expression changed. She asked me why I was home. I hadn't cried on anyone's shoulder. Let alone my mother's for years, but in that moment I needed her more than ever I. Let it all out from the blissful ignorance, my relationship with mark the eventual downfall of our life together. She listened for the first time in forever I. Felt like my mother was truly there for me. She caressed. My Hair's poured my heart out and continued to hold me until the tears stopped flowing. When finally lifted my head up! She looked at me and told me how sorry she was right before she slapped me across the face. I was shocked. Feel it at first, but my hand instinctively went to my cheek, foolish girl, she uttered as it began to sting. You should know better. She walked out of this Alarium, leaving me alone to cry again, but this time for a wholly different reason. I saw and silence. My is looking toward the lighthouse outside. Later, that night I somehow mustered up enough courage to join my family for dinner. My mother was already seated leany by her side, holding onto that teddy bear. She found in the dark room. Once leany saw me. She bounded up and wrap me in a big hug. I hadn't seen her since I returned. She presumably was in the dark room, but seeing her now did bring a tiny bit of joy to my day. Fiercely hugged her back. I'm so happy you're home. She whispered in my ear. Before could respond. She followed up with Abigail is to. At the mere mention of the name, my body unconsciously recoiled back from her. But she didn't seem to notice. She sat back down placing Abigail on the table next to her plate has a studied her dinner, apparently come in the middle of her applying makeup, as there was a dark patch on her right cheek, where she apparently started to apply some rouge, and then stopped to come down to eat. We picked at our food for a few minutes and under-cooked chicken that my mother didn't mind risking Salmonella for when much to my surprise, my father appeared in the doorway. He had somehow tore himself away from his busy schedule of locking himself away in his study to join us. He slumped down into his chair and looked up at me and then the my mother. Would she doing here? He s to everyone but me. Tear is home now. My mother replied. My father finally looked back at me. Schools done, he asked. It is for me. I, told him miserably, still picking up my dinner. Was that supposed to mean? He said she and mark broke up. My mother chimed in before I had a chance to say anything else. He cheated on her. A silence fell over the table. No one quite sure what to say next. I was embarrassed that my mother told my father has I would have preferred to tell him on my own terms, but it was out in the open now. It's no going back. My father broke the hush on his own good. He said, shoveling a full of half raw chicken in his mouth I never liked him anyway. Abigail never liked him either. leany followed with quickly. My father roared at her in response. What did I tell you about Abigail? He yelled leaping from his seat with a quickness I wasn't aware he was still capable of I told you I. Don't want her anywhere near the dinner table. Let alone you speaking that name in this house again. Do you hear me? Lena's is looked down at her plate. Quick to comply a meek sorry escaped her lips. What was that? He wore it again still staring at her, her eyes started his direction for a second before looking away again, it dawned on me then that the dark spot was not an interrupted makeup attempt, but instead a bruise one that looked fairly fresh at some point. My father had apparently added hitting my sister in his repertoire. I'm sorry she said louder this time. All the while my mother ignored the goings on. That's what I thought. He said you listen to me if he know what's good for you here. It was clear to me that things had degraded even further in the past few months with both my sister and my mother living in fear of my father. Each was eager to ignore the plights of the other as a way to escape his wrath, if only for a few seconds. But now that I was home. Now that I was forced to be here again. It wasn't how I wanted to live. I refused to be under his thumb meekly obeying him. No one was standing up to him. No one said a thing, but I wasn't going to stand for that I. Don't know what came over me then, but a single word escaped my lips. No. The room fell silent again. Lena gave me only the briefest of glances clutching advocate tight on my mother turned her head. My father. Still standing slowly walked over to me rubbing scar on his palm. A feat of champions in his apparently abbreviated state, he placed a hand on the back of my chair, and leaned in close, his sour breath, causing me a bit of nausea. What was that? SMART MOUTH? They turn my head and looked him. Square in the is stealing all of my nerves to stand up to him. I said No. I felt the impact of his hand before I saw it. A backhanded slap sent me swirling off the chair and onto the dining room floor. My father's eyes burned with hatred as they stared down at me. How dare you? He bellowed you ungrateful Little Bitch. I said nothing I. Just laid there on the floor, my hand, cradling my face from his hit. In a single day both my parents had struck me and the emotional repercussions of that were worse than the physical ones. You think just because you run off and leave your family to get an education that you can disrespect a man in his own Goddamn House. You think you're so goddamn special. He was working himself up into a frenzy now spittle flying from his lips, as he raised his voice, Higher and higher, his avalanche of emotions scared me, as it was apparent that he kept all the sin for years bottling it up to all come out at once. I don't care what fancy books you learned from out there, but this year is my house. My House and you will obey my. To accentuate his point. He took my chair and tossed it backwards..

"Telling me that cleaning it out was a product for a rainy day I moved cautiously in the darkness, not wanting to bump into anything or accidentally break something. The music continued to play softly coming from the left side of the room. The basement ran the length of the entire house, making it seem impossibly large, especially filled with so many things. Old Furniture, large portrait's and boxes upon boxes, needed a pseudo maze full of family memories. After some careful navigating I found myself standing in front of a solid wall, or rather a wall with metal, shelving lining the length of it. I stopped in my tracks and listened. Music still played, but it sounded more toward the right. I swung my flashlight in the direction and slowly walk that way stopping every few steps to listen again. The source of the music was close. Here I looked at the metal shelf against the wall and confusion. Taking a brief look around. That didn't seem to be anything of importance on the shelf itself. Just a bunch of old junkins boxes perhaps in house this old. The Acoustics were playing tricks on me. Was it actually coming from somewhere else entirely? I began to make my way back toward my sister when I heard a crash behind me. I quickly turned and direct my beam on the floor. Lying, there was box one that have fallen near where I was just standing. Did I do that. Did a knock something off balance without realizing causing it to fall. Just be on the box spot an old pair of shoes. On their own, they wouldn't have caught my eye, but. It looked like they were attached to a pair of pants. I slowly moved my beam up. And those pants turned into a man's overcoat. A feeling of dread formed in my stomach has my brain began to formulate that it wasn't just a random assortment of clothing bunched together in the dark basement, but rather something else entirely someone else entirely. My flashlight beam continued its slow ascent up the coat. Dread continued to build I was inches away from revealing the identity of this stranger in my basement, but in my heart. I already knew who was. A guest Lee Smile greeted me as my light fell upon it. The man in the. Lighthouse will return after these messages. A career in application development at Gd. "Me. I looked at her and smiled. It is now. She grabbed my hand and took off down the hall, the need to discover the house, and all its glory, overtaking her fear from a few short minutes ago. I dropped my bags somewhere during our expedition as the ground floor opened before us two young girls exploring uncharted territory. Since the first four was meant as a living space at the home. It had more open spaces than most a formal dining room was next to the kitchen while parlor was just beyond that it's hi. Vaulted ceilings and tassled draperies, giving it a sense of grandeur. This alarium gave way to the side yard. It's glass windows, allowing the the shine brightly on various plant life with seating areas all around to enjoy the ocean view afforded. On the other end of the house was the library. It's too sprawling floors of dark wood, allowing for a vast selection of books complete with an ornate fireplace too cozy up next to a metal spiral staircase in the center, allowed for easy access to all. It was a place I. Imagined I would spend a lot of time in. I took a moment to take it all in. The musty smell of old books, the vast collection of them before me. And also. A melody. Wafting in from somewhere beyond. At my parents decided to play a record elsewhere in the House Only. Just thrived and I was sure that even if they had come across a record player, unpacking would be their first order of business. Extreme my ears, trying to place the song or even just its point of. It felt like it was coming from everywhere at once wall also nowhere at all. Had A haunting quality about it? And I could feel myself getting lost in its music. Seeing my state. Of Distraction, leany, seize the opportunity for game. Catch me if you can. She held as she wasted no time in running up the spiral staircase, excitedly running from shelf to shelf for quick glance at all the dusty volumes that sat untouched for years. It wasn't long before she threw open a door and ran off to explore the rest of the second story by the time I reached the door. She disappeared behind. She was long out of sight. I found myself staring down a long hallway. The walls here were decorated with dark wood panels with detailed interior trim that went from the floor till about halfway up where old and curling wallpaper took over before reaching the ceiling, the hallway itself seemed impossibly long with a multitude of doors on either side until splitting off in both directions at the end for a moment it almost seemed to sense my disorientation and stretch itself even further, however, a quick shake of my head with closed eyes jostled that vision away, and I began to search for my sister while I did not find her. What I did find were more rooms that I grasp multiple rooms some even with balconies. Rounds were among my discoveries. I also found double doors, leading to common rooms, plenty of hidden oaks for someone to hide away in. I was overwhelmed by the houses, almost rambling complexity, and felt more as if in the minicars maze than my new family home. Most rooms were already furnished with furniture, still covered in thin white sheets from days long before us, occupying the rooms when I did finally discover leanings hiding place it was amongst a horde of dolls in one of the bedrooms, her face, barely sticking out from behind them as she pretended to be. One of them, played along at first, declaring loudly that I wondered where she could be causing her to fall into a fit of giggles. If, she knew what awaited us that night. She wouldn't laughed. Lighthouse will return after a word from our sponsors. These are crazy times we live in. You know what else is crazy raising a tiny human. Hi Guys Katie Lowes. Now Lighthouse continues. Leaney later declared tour parents that the very room she was hiding in was to be her bedroom. Receiving no opposition from them. She moved her things into it immediately. Wanting to be a good sister, I chose the room across the hall, which was well suited for me. Complete with a reading nook and balcony overlooking the front yard. It received plenty of natural light. Not Mention it was twice as big as my sisters. I wish I could say that that first night in our new home was uneventful. After hours of unpacking and settling in, we were all thoroughly exhausted from long day. I fell asleep almost instantly my body sinking into the bed with ease. I don't recall the exact time it happened, but I woke to leany climbing into bed with me. Assume she was a bit nervous about sleeping alone in a new house, but when I heard a soft Saab. I knew it was something else. What's wrong. I said to her as she buried her head in my pillow. I saw again. She replied fighting back tears. So who? I asked not fully comprehending what she meant. The man in the hat. As soon as the words escaped from her lips, I felt a children down my spine. He was standing in my doorway. Sleep. When. I asked my hackles raising concern that there was an intruder in her home. Just now I close my eyes and count to five until he was gone, and when he was ran here even in the darkness I could feel her eyes welling with tears as she stared at me. Despite the fact that our father did not find any one earlier. I felt the need to check for myself. At the very least I needed to tell my parents. After. I reassured her that everything was going to be okay. Crept to the door. The hallway was empty the shadows, my only companion. Looking toward my right was a bit easier as my mother had enough foresight to plug in a nightline earlier, this turned out to be both a blessing and a curse, because as my is adjusted, I made out a dark shape toward the end of the hall. At first, I thought it was triggered alight. But. Caused me to realize otherwise. Coming out of the darkness was exactly what my sister exclaimed it to be. A man wearing a hat. Though down the hall, I could tell that he was dressed almost in Edward fashion with a bowler hat atop his head, and his feet didn't seem to touch the floor. Instead. He gently floated few inches above it. I instinctively lean back startled at the sight before me, this couldn't be real. This couldn't be happening. Using my own advice. Close my eyes I counted five. One..

"I would say if you're going to do it and drywall you can do it and drywall. If you're going to do you know do the corners you do. The corners with corner be Obviously needs something to screw the drywall to a minimum amount of drilling of the I beam is preferable because it's tough drill `application. I think my head on doing something like An IBM in wrapping it. With dry walls you gotta get some would on there because you're going to have to sink some screws into some would I think you could go with one by. I don't think you need to go with Dubai on terms of screwing it on. It's not load bearer bringer anything Also if I wanted to put some runners on an I beam and I probably have so I could screw to it. one by. I would probably glue the shit. I probably put like construction. Adhesive on it you know pl four hundred or something like that. I would put it where I wanted to put it. And I would clamp the shit out of it and then I would put a couple just a couple of strategic screws like like through like not in bulk like just through screw in a couple of places but spread it out like four feet. You know what I mean. It's just put the construction. He's on a clamp down and just put a couple of screws in it very sparse. That's how I would do it but I would think I would. I would just spray the ceiling to match the beams. That same caller. Yeah looks great. Annemie adds it kind of an industrial battleship grey. "Com are so we got an email question from Craig will keep it in the realm of tiles eysenck. Shurmur had a shower with two inch by two inch floor tiles. That are seeping water in specific area. The shower hasn't been used for over a week but the grout lines are visibly wet. Initially I thought there was a leak in the pipes but I confirm that everything was bone dry after I opened up a small access panel in the closet behind the shower and checks the sub floor through the crawlspace. My guess is that water is collecting between the shower pan and the base mortar through cracked or poorest. Grout LINE I do I. Dry out. The water can reseal the grout while they're still moisture trapped between the PAN and the child's banks. Okay so that's interesting because a lot of times people don't realize. Is that the mortar bad. That's your shower. Pan Floor stays wet. Most of the time it's always gonNA have moisture to it but it sounds to me like there might be a leak between the drain and the mortar bed. Well let's let's go over the shower pan. A shower starts off being framed out like any other like a small all closet complete complete with a plywood floor sub floor. You know if you're up off the slab and if you're not on a slight Then you plummet you. Put the drains and and event they hot mop it or they put a membrane down. But let's say then they flash it up the side actually before you do the is before you before you do paper and then you do a little bit of mortar to slightly angle it then you go into your hop and then yeah yeah you get it. Drain it you do. Do Your mortar get going paper. It then hot mop it and the the drain has a drain. Your shower drain has a drain where the water comes in the top but it also has we polls working rain down into underneath the finish height of the tile correct correct and then those we pulls can leach moisture into the the mortar bed itself and sometimes if the more bed was done wrong. There could be a a vein or a river going through the mortar. Bill that's going to that area or maybe to your point the grout join after you've tiled it is so porous no one ever seal that that it does continue to get wet but it looks like a lot of moisture to me but just a we got this right. I'm I'm standing at the shower Pan Deli yet. I'm staring up at the picture of the shower. Pan Sandwich number seven number seven. Yes so the first thing they have is plywood. Second thing we have is a light. Mortar bed that's that is guiding the water toward the drain correct. Then we have paper. We have tar paper and we have hot mop taller going up they were or membrane and also flashing up the side probably eight inches or six inches will usually go twelve twelve as that much. Okay go up the side then. We have mortar again on top of it but this time. What's the drainage on that mortar? So the more so than the mortar comes to drain a sloping toward the drain to the top of the drain. Second mortar bed. Correct picturing are sandwich right and Thin set tile grout fee then so then around the drain where the where the cement is encapsulating the drain sometimes water can get in there continually if the drainage is not great and. It's puzzling in the shower. When you're showering and so I wonder if I wonder if he has good drainage in the drain itself otherwise it feels to me like it's just a you know it's coming from either where the tile the floor tile meets the shower wall draining of their and coming through there and coming down underneath maybe that's occurring so the the fixes for this could be caulking silicone all the way around the perimeter of the of the shower walls where they meet the floor and then also I would acid wash the tile floor get the ground clean and then put shit on a sealer on the ground joints and see if that helps you Just to be clear. The water from the shower is meant to permeate the grout joint. And it's meant to permeate mortar bad that the tile is on and travel underground so to speak to the hot mop and go in through the side of the weep holes a half an inch down from the actual top drain. It's supposed to be poor. That's right and then allowed her to it and a lot of times when people put in the the mortar better around the drain. It's recommended that you put Spicer's around the we polls to kind of provide a little opening before the cement touches the we pulse rise. There was like a little barrier so that water can then get through and then there's a space for the water to go into the walls and it's not just plugged the week it hasn't plug. The weep holes was Samat. Sometimes the installers. Don't do that and I've seen that CO create a bit of a problem with a wet pan underneath so that could be an issue too. We got one more question meant. Yeah let's see one last twitter question. This one comes to us from at J. Stack seven a guys finishing my basement. Any suggestion in covering the IBM and support posts. I'm in New York state picture. I beam all right. So I'm I'm I guess. He means steel. I beam although it's Kinda hard these days to under sometimes people may not being or that could mean a kind of Web. Joyce or something something like that but if you are.

"house" Discussed on Young House Love Has A Podcast

"I'm John and I'm Sherry. We like home stuff. We like talking. And we liked the occasional game show soundtrack so welcome to young house. Love has a podcast for we have deep and not so deep conversations about diy design and life at home. We sold our house and it all went down on like any other house that we've ever sold before today. We're breaking down how it happened and why it was surprisingly emotional. Plus are we doing bathroom? Storage totally wrong. Hey guys just a quick note about the episode. You're about to hear we recorded earlier last week. Before all the announcements of cancellations enclosures around the country. So you won't hear any of that addressed in this episode. Things do feel quite a bit different now just a few days later. I'm sure you guys are feeling a lot of the uncertainty that we are and we're going to do our best to keep our podcast releasing as scheduled for the next few weeks because we know at the very least sometimes. It's just nice to have a little distraction from the news but if we can't for some reason we'll keep everyone posted on our twitter and instagram accounts for now. Here's Today's episode. As originally recorded everyone please stay safe. Stay well and take care knack. Who's there with all the house? We sold our house. Who THAT'S THE END? You didn't really think this joke all the way through. What about we sold our house and now we're so happy. Knock knock. Who's there. We sold our house. Now get out now but we get to stay here because we are renting back until the middle of June but as for how selling our house went I would describe it as a bit of a fast moving train. Yeah well this whole thing has been a fast moving train. We have sold. Three houses bought a new house. And Yeah we're still catching our breath over at still trying to fully celebrate the news that our house here in Richmond is officially under contract. Yes and when we say sold houses it doesn't mean they've closed in fact. None of these three have closed yet but this house was a really crazy process. Because it's the only one we listed on. Ls That's the multiple listing Serranto listing service. Whatever official realtor service that like if you are working through a realtor they will put your house on there. And that is what distributed to sites like realtor dot com and Zillow and read fed. And all those other realtor apps if you see it on there it's because it's been listed on. Mls somewhere right and if you are for sale by owner. There's a way you can do it. You pay a fee to get it on there yourself and kind of work around agent but we did mention last episode. You can go back and listen to that one that we are using a realtor to sell this house because it has just been like a lot of interest in our neighborhood our neighborhood for some reason. It's very hot right now. And there's also low inventory just in general but also in our area and so we've been hearing for the first time ever that we're selling a house that it is a sellers market. The combination of high demand and low inventory has put us in an advantageous position for the first time. Because you have lots of people shopping for a house and not many options so going into this. We had seen ahead of our house. Other houses like go up on the market in our neighborhood and sell within hours or days get multiple offers offers above asking all the things you want as a seller and all the things we have never experienced before because it was not like this when we sold our other two houses like we actually had a fair amount of trouble selling our first house I would say like it took weeks to get an offer that offer didn't necessarily go smoothly so we had a hard. I go at selling houses so this feels like a huge relief to finally have it go easily so what we did was something we had seen. Some friends do with their house to sort of keep this high demand well organized and give everyone who was interested in it. A fair shot at making an offer and then also making it easier for us to sort through any offers that came through so this was sort of the mechanics of how we sold our house. We talked about how we're having showings over one weekend in our last week's episode and that is different than like having an open house if you have sold a house in the past or you're familiar with the general real estate process at least. The kind of stereotypical one that happens here in the United States so like on a Sunday afternoon. Your realtor will calm and keep. The House opened for like three or four hours to allow anyone to come in and take a tour of it whether they are actively looking for house or if they are just nosy neighbors who want to pop into an open house. That's what we do. Most of this is that it's totally remove. We even do it in other people's neighborhoods park can go. They're open houses. It's Super Fun Fun Sunday afternoon. Activity and side note. I've been asked. Do you think that annoys realtors? I'm friends with tons of realtors. They all love it. They said any foot traffic is great. If there is a real buyer in there they love having neighbors or losing there too because it looks like it's hopping it looks like it's in demand. Realtors by nature love to network. They love to give out their card. So even if you're not actively shopping they welcome you to their open house. They hate win an open houses. Empty just be honest with them as always their reaction like don't act like you're buying if you're not out of fear that they'll be mad that you're there just say oh. I am a neighbor and I'm just checking it out or we often say. Oh we drove down to the neighborhood because there were a few open houses in the fan one of our favorite areas to look for inspiration and they say great and then they don't bother you to buy it. You're not lying and saying you want to buy a good sign out but we didn't have an open house instead. What we had was a weekend of appointment only showings because our realtor had made the suggestion that if there is high demand for a place you want it to be somewhat more organized than a free for all open house where people are all trying to cram through within just a matter of hours because that could just be chaotic and hard for them to give personal attention to each person coming through an answer questions for each person coming through and for you as the homeowner. It's also scary to think that there might be like a crowd of people in your house like effectively a large party without you there already. Everyone's coming but me right and the funny thing is that we kind of knew what to expect from this because our friends had sold their house two weeks before we sold ours with a similar static and a similar house was much bigger than a different price range but it was interesting to watch how there's went because they did the exact same thing that our realtor recommend that we did. They listed it on a Thursday. So it hits. Mls on Thursday but in the notes. It Says No showings until Saturday and Sunday. Call me to schedule that way. The realtor can make sure everyone has their own pocket of time. Nobody's on top of each other and they literally put in the notes are friends agent. Did this as well. We will review offers. Lucky enough to have them on Monday. And so what it does. Is it levels the playing field for everyone? Everyone knows they're coming within a two day span and everyone knows all the offers will come in at the same time and the homeowner gets to. Just wait them and decide. What's the best offer for them? Instead of people rushing to get an early thinking making keep others from getting in if they get their bid in early enough and I think it makes it much easier to evaluate an offer as the seller because if we started getting them on Thursday or Friday we might have been like. Should we not even do showings on Saturday Sunday? Should we just accept an offer and it just can scramble your brain because you don't know what might becoming an? I like that kind of eliminated the rush that I feel like sometimes happens in these selling situations where the process kind of rewards. Who's ever I or fastest. And it encourages people to Sorta like race to get their offer in or to make quick decisions about things but by kind of outlining the timeframe up front. It gave people time to come into town if they needed to or to like double check on their financing if they needed to like it gave people a little bit of time in which they could make sure that they were doing what was right for them and they could offer what was best for them and so it made us feel more confident at the end that we weren't just having to pick whoever was first or fastest or whatever but we actually could look at things in a more apples to apples way because everyone had had the time to do it. Yes and at the very end of the day guys. We have thirty showing scheduled going into the weekend we went to the beach. We were like we're at here. Can I jump in with one other sort of caveat to this because there are people who have asked us? I'm sure some of you are thinking that like. Yeah yeah this is not normal though. This is just because you guys are bloggers like people know you roundhouse. Love Effects. Someone said that to me. I said no like five of my friends sold last month. It's happened to all of them offers over ask multiple offers. Our friend got seven offers. And She had twenty showings and they were all in one weekend. So that number of people flocking to the House for showings and then that many offers coming in it is just a crazy. Low inventories seller's market right now. At least where we live. Yeah I mean I think we may have gotten more showings because of the fact that people know our house and people are already familiar with what it looks like so I won't deny that there probably was an element of it but I think we still would've experienced something very similar. Had that not benefactor because there certainly wasn't a young house when we sold our last two houses in both cases are first and second house sold to someone who didn't know us from Adam didn't care about our block just as like a very removed transaction. I was tell people if you think about the pool of people who know us like whether you listen to our podcast or read our blog. Whatever of that group. There's a very small portion that actually lives in this region and there's an even smaller portion within that that is actively looking for a house and even of that group that is actively looking for a house. It's probably very small. Sliver that are particular house meets the criteria of like it may not be in the neighborhood they want price range they want or the size they want like it is a very very small overlap of. I know of Young House love and I want to buy young house loves HOUSE SO YOUNG HAS LOVE. House DOT COM. That's going to be their blog. Sorry but I know I cut you off. You were saying that we had. Yeah we had thirty showings going into that weekend so we drove off to the beach. House said good luck with everything Shannon. Who's our realtor and then said just Texas with any questions while she texted us. Questions throughout the showings everything went really well and she said at the end by the way there ended up being fifty one showings so. I was shocked because I thought thirty. How did it balloon? Fifty one thirty is a mind blowing number for me because again we are coming off our last sale. Having maybe three showings across like two weeks so to have thirty in one weekend was so amazing for us but then to find out it was fifty one was even harder to believe in also. There was a part of me it was like. Oh my gosh. How many people were in our house? Lets you said over two hundred because it was usually a couple and a realtor and sometimes it was a couple and our realtor and their parents or their brother or sister or their kids so we were like wow. That's a lot of people first of all. I thought our house would be trashed. Guys no evidence of people being in there at all. No there was one piece of evidence. Someone had started a puzzle upstairs. Mom put her kids in front of a puzzle that we had out on the table and they did a little bit of the puzzle but I was like what Nice people who came to showings and they helped us with the puzzles. They didn't have time to finish them back. Thought there'd be like leaves in dirt everywhere expected to be like a Frat party like solo cops beer pong table. I just thought there'd be evidence of people and there was not any like the house was clean. It looked like no one had been there. I honestly it was like someone. Punking us a nobody was in the house like the doors. Were just locked the whole weekend. Well we know that it was not a punk because we were fortunate enough to get several offers out of it as well which again. I can't overstate how grateful we are for this process to have gone the way it has because it is so opposite of what we've experienced in the past and we can have empathy for the buyers because when it's a seller's market it's annoying to be a buyer and we have been in those shoes too where you are trying to be competitive and you want to be the best offer and you might not get picked and you can't sleep because you're worried about it. I was like almost getting sad going through the offers because I was so quick to see ourselves and those people shoes because we have been there like even buying this house..

"Wyoming mountains for just about six years now and she has a lot of first hand experience on how to deal with things like heat and water and electricity atrocity. When you don't have a reliable three hundred sixty five days a year of Sunshine Ariel is really detailed and and a generous guest who offers lots of inside looks at how she does different things in her tiny house and she also does this on her wonderful a youtube channel? I had. Reo back on the show today. She was actually the second ever guest on the tiny house. Lifestyle podcast to kind of give us an update update on tiny house living after six years and talk through some of the systems that I get the most questions about namely living off grid and heat. Beat it's a really great conversation so I hope you'll stick around to learn a lot from my guest areo mcglaughlin but first. I'd like to tell you about the sponsor for today's episode tiny house decisions tiny house. Decisions is the Super Super Helpful. Guide book that I wrote five years ago to share all of the knowledge and decisions that I made to build my own tiny house along with what I did right what I did wrong and how I would change things. The guidebook is now in its second edition. It's been completely rewritten and expanded to reflect. How tiny houses are being being built today and it also includes several new tiny house stories from other tiny house dwellers the guidebook has been expanded to include things like sips and metal title framing and all the different kinds of installations that are being used in tiny houses? And I seriously think this is the most helpful thing you can buy if you are thinking about living being in a tiny house if you go through the guidebook from start to finish you will have a solid plan for all the systems and everything. It's going to go into your tiny house. The second second edition has been a long time in the making and I'm really excited to share it with the world to learn more. You can head over to the tiny house. Dot Net slash t hd again. Dan Matt's the tiny house dot net slash. T H D. All right I am here. Yeah it's great to have you back. We were chatting before the before we started rolling and you were episode number two and that was quite a while ago. I'm not even sure. What episode number? This is GonNa be but I know it's not number three. Yeah this will I. I don't know off the top of my head but it'll be in the high eighties or maybe ninety Nice it's been just about two a years more than two years think. I've heard somewhere that most podcasts. Like don't get past five or six episodes or something like that. So yeah that's true. I think yeah like like most. Just give up because it is. It's a lot of work to put the show together but it's it's one of my favorite things well. I'm glad you're doing. I enjoy listening. Who Good we're we're actually also chatting during the pre roll because you know in your bio you mentioned that you love sharing what you've learned and that is absolutely the truth? I mean your Youtube Channel really documents your daily and seasonal life in in your tiny house. What motivates you to to keep sharing your journey when it seems like so many other people kind of stop sharing after? They're done with their build. Oh I guess maybe people are still interested. I kind of started so I didn't build mine myself. Mine was built for me so I never had a bill to document. That wasn't why I started. I kind of started because there is some issues with specifically living in Little House on wheels in a very very bold spot that when I was trying to figure out how the do the when I moved in. I'm sure other people had done them but I couldn't find anyone who had written down what they did. or how did or how it worked out. And so I thought well if I'M GONNA learn it the hard way I may as well write.

"Editions. Coffee House shows spectators daily politics podcast. We had a few people round for drinks. Six Years The spectator a few days ago it was to mark the launch of Liam Halligan. 's new book whom trips published by Bites bag now there were a great many people there and Liam gave a few marks the beginning a little speech which had quite a few people talking about it afterwards. Not just on the evening but even a couple of days afterwards I thought we would invite him back to say to you what he told the rest of US downstairs in our boardroom that we started these podcasts. As a means of sharing with you the conversations we have here in the office so I thought why not ask Liam Bank and sheer speech so Leeann please take it away. Thank you phrases. So this is the speech. I gave him my book launch. I'm a twenty five year old professional living in London. On a decent salary the email began and the idea of owning my own home is laughable. The situations genuinely hopeless and I find it terrifying to think about the future. I've never voted Labor in my life but the lure has never been stronger. I'm by no means a socialist but when I'm modest I'm bishen like owning a decent home to start. A family is out of reach so many we know something seriously wrong in our society now as a newspaper columnist I get many letters from the public and I know the spectator does too do. But this one pulled me up short my new book home trues the UK's chronic housing shortage has provoked plenty of re defeat back and the young voter who wrote this heartfelt missive. Put his finger to my mind on the key to the outcome of this. The most important general elections since World War Two housing is is the dog yet to bark in this campaign. No mention was made of. It's in the recent leaders debate but political classes and even some in the media seemed to have forgotten. Just why Jeremy Corbyn came within the few thousand votes of Downing Street in June two thousand seventeen it was down to the rise in support for Labour among generation nation rent the millions of twenty five thirty nine year olds who unlike their parents console to buy a home while Brexit's important Britain's housing housing shortage should also be center stage in this election campaign the UK needs around quarter of a million new homes each year to meet population growth. That's two and a half million. Every decade we built as one point eight million in the eighties and the numbers of fallen every decade since the resulting massive backlogs backlog shortage is why the average UK home now cost eight times average annual earnings well over twice the historic norm rising to twelve times in the southeast southeast across the country from the North West the.

"The modular pieces. Stacked lengthwise is or can they be side to side as well so they. They're basically in a longitudinal plane. I suppose but then if you have a second. Multiple cultural are a second nest house as part of the setup sites studio. I'll say it's an additional living module than it can be optimal to sign goal. or it can be. He's lying or it could be at ninety degrees so I mean what we're dealing with. Here is the concept of accounting. Basically everything is a caravan are found in the sense that is movable is isn't a wheels planning lower in the UK anyway. That's one of the key. The key elements okay and I WANNA get to all that legality in a little bit so in your bio you. You mentioned that you're building about two to three the of these either nest pods or nest houses per year. How far out what? What's the wait list like? Oh well it fairies aries and it goes up and down by rapidly. The one thing I have come to realize with tiny houses on. It's probably the same in any property based business. Let me think I have had this month. Three promises of the start of work which have all gone on the two who've gone past shaped through various divall situation or a planning situation or a finance situation they up all the time as of today as it stands on bookshop till twenty twenty one but as I only bill to three yeah announce deliberate really because that's how long it takes to build one between four and six months depending on the level of finished cipher s Ford but also because then typically have a month off before I saw another one. I kind of don't do what I do just for the money I'm very. I'm very la keeping slightly later in life than a young spring chicken like you in this. I'm not a not full force to animal. I have a passion Ford I do so therefore is nice to keep it going and But yeah that's that's where I am right now. I am on building a nest off lumens on then another two three line off about excellent. While it's it's clear that you know that passion and the love of what you're doing it it comes through in the buildings thank you and I'm I'm excited for people to check them out and see them if they haven't and so I actually Have recently started accepting questions from listeners. Call in questions Sion's and I got a question from someone named Alex and I was hoping you could help me answer it. Okay I'M GONNA go ahead and play it Hopefully people will be able able to hear it so. Just Gimme a SEC. I would like to know more about tie to build one of these tiny high-seas and my garden pardon and Scotland. and I wonder if there's anybody that is GonNa think or is currently doing workshops. Became loan workshops hopes that could tell with the basics just to get me started on. Cue All right so it sounds like Alex's Alexis maybe a diy interested in buying a tiny house and You know what what. Resources are out there in Scotland for for people. Oh who want to build. I mean to be honest Nelson. Lots I'm sure you'll direction to be honest. mean you know. It's probably very difficult. But you guys in North America to get any kind of perspective on where tiny houses the rest of the world. It's difficult for people in the US. To get perspective on anything. I I saw in the six years. I've been involved specifically in China's I I've seen changes I've seen I've seen changes about what's happening state nightside with you on. I'm very aware now. The era hundreds more builders in there were five years ago professional builders me In in Europe on each massive changes the from the first one or two tough in France and now France Germany the Netherlands. There is an active tiny house. US professional building market with new companies coming to mock it all the time I mean the one thing I love about the tiny house movement as as it is in America is that you do have thought ethos himself building I always having being a self starter myself in a self teacher and and somebody just went and got on with what they wanted to do. I I do think that is the fundamental to have in life to be able to actually get on a Nazi see barriers things you know one of my one of my absolute heroes in. All of this is kind of Soza linked to the tiny house movement as a finger during his while. beloit con from shelter publications onto. I send Lloyd over here to the toper here a couple of years ago. I don't want to the things that I was read. A mold of his books and actually the nest house is being. His book is banned in small loans. I'm very proud of but you said said if you stuck about how to start something you've you've just actually got to start you know you can you. Can some people. People do pursue endlessly. How do I went away? What should I how an actually the thing is actually to start and even if you stop completely the way way you'll start learning and I think it really brought home the immediacy of actually getting stuck in in doing it? I've never had that problem myself health. Because I'm I'm a bit of a maverick a free thing crisis so it was came very naturally to me is a slightly autistic person. I would plunge in and do something and I think some people need to be told. Some people need to be told but actually don't wait for the rules. Don't wait for the or someone to tell you town to show you the right way. You can do something because let's face it. There are so many ways you can do it and so no one has a defacto loans to do that. So so my thought is always just plunge in it. Okay you have to research and you have to look at what's out there. They're all resources and so much on the Internet that I'm kind of caught in an awkward situation with enquiries like this because I do get a lot of people emailed me through the website and I do find. There are an awful lot of people. Who they they see the potential immediately Egypt in the vision of a tiny house and think can see how it could potentially solve some of the issues in life? Whether that's an affordability issue if you or if actually living somewhere nice as opposed to living in squalid conditions or whatever the thing I find that in not initial reaction is potentially a long way from being able to realize the solution and it brings in so many complications allegations that people doing everyday is a professional. have no idea what about yet. Funding's going to come from where they're gonNA put it at his legal. How can they get insurance Florence? How actually GONNA build it? What's the best way to build on? I guess what I've done over the over the time on being involved is that working the way I do look into my own. I've got to kind of Clamp down on a lot of the free information in the sense that I tend to my my general root for someone is to come in consultation with me which here's a two to three hour usually three plus sit down consultation to through able to achieve. What solutions out there? In order to achieve bit. That's generally of course if they want me to build something full them although I have done it for self billed as well but equally I think that puts puts me in a difficult position because there is a liability issue that insurance wise. I have profession insurance as a tradesman but you have to be careful what you convince people to do what they go often. I mean I saw I saw trailers for self built for example right so people can actually buy retrial for me exactly like I used to sponsor but I have a a health warning with those that you do. This is totally up to you. Yeah I I mean I would say that it sounds like there. Aren't any people running workshops how to build a tiny house. But I'm not sure if there's anything we have in the states an organization called habitat for humanity that builds build houses for for low income people and people in need and you can volunteer for habitat for example and at least get some of those hands on skills I mean many people have never ever framed awhile before absolutely another option would be. I'm not sure if there's you know a group of enthusiasts or you know it was some kind of tiny house interest group but to put it out there and say is anybody building. Diy Right now. Can I come and help and just watch. There are a couple from community pages on facebook where people are doing that for the UK and the other walnut. I know down in Bristol. At the moment there is there is a group bowl. Tiny House Bristol. they are actually looking at doing community community land initiative to build tiny houses. And they're getting support from the local council to do that the other thing. I should mention opposes that I was involved. In Social Bites Tiny House village in Edinburgh. Which I think three years ago they approached me often? Designed the next house prototype because they were looking for housing multiple for this village concepts. So Joshua Johnson Started this social enterprise six or seven years ago now and they run it through coffee shops in various cities in Scotland where they employ about thirty forty fifty percent of the Stoffel homeless people but then they also have. There will obviously obviously the nonprofit because there are community enterprise and they have clever ideas like layaway so she go in and buy your morning coffee. You can the sign for someone who's homeless as well while the judge shot the tiger of actually trying to drive the very difficult homeless problem in Scotland towards a solution which we could help in about away so he came up with the village idea. Having excellent support from Edinburgh Council themselves who had development land that they could effectively lend us all these lease in the short term so that has been running full. Oh by tasty months now on eleven nest houses on that site adding Bra a two bedroom houses. Sto Together Way hub building which is a community hob weather. I learn skills communally. They cook and eat community as well as having their own their own house us with a buddy system running in there and they have cameras. Twenty four seven onsite so I think she they just. They just announced last month that they had moved through the first six members onto full-time housing from from being inland so an interesting in because when when we did that an I have to stress. That wasn't just me involved in I. I did the design concept but there were hundreds of companies in Scotland contributions that timing climbing products Jet which was an amazing community efforts. The the interesting thing is while we were doing it. We office from a lot of people to get involved in volunteer. The chocolate we find. Is that the health and safety side of things off. Makes this theory difficult. The houses themselves professionally built. We weren't in a situation where we could people come on site and teach them framing framing framing within a couple of days and actually learn the skills on the job is often a lot of the problem these days as far as I'm sure you probably have the same the same issues of health and safety in terms of teaching letting people work on a build. Yeah I mean I mean. The stops thing isn't that safety is paramount these days. Yeah and that's what I've seen. Is that a lot of the tiny house. Education out. There has has moved away from being hands on just because it is so difficult to get the insurance to do it and also just to ensure people safety because really I mean. There's a reason why it's hard to get insurance to hand amateurs a chop saw and have them go up on ladders. It's because it's dangerous on and we have I've seen wonderful schemes like with wikki house. Wicky House did a community led Wine Edinburgh literally twenty people just rolled up that morning and handling rioters and things like not within a few hours. And you know all arguing over how best to build on something. I mean it can be. I couldn't handle it myself as a pro because you have to think about what you're doing but some but then how'd you get people to learn it is. It's a difficult thing..
