House Passes $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill, Delays BBB

"Ahead. Good morning, Jake, how are you? Well, how are you? Good, so the bipartisan infrastructure Bill passed last week. I would have voted for it. I would have been with one of the 17 Republicans in the Senate who voted for it in the House Republicans. Half trillion in new spending half trillion and repurpose. That's not really the big deal. The big deal is BBB. Build back better. Where is it? Is it dead yet? I don't think it's that. I'll go over quickly where I think it is. I mean, so the moderates and the progressives cut a deal to allow those two votes to happen, the infrastructure vote and the so called rule vote, which is a procedural vote. On the larger package, they cut a deal to vote for this large package next week. Now, if you dynamics to keep in mind, number one, what the house passes will never become law. Number two, we don't know if we're going to have the CBO the congressional budget office analysis of the larger Bill. By next week. So I'm not entirely sure this team is going to work. But I do think I was just telling Dwayne your associate this morning, I do think that some version of this bill will pass at some point in time. I just think that it won't happen. Obviously not before Thanksgiving, but if it happens by the end of the year by December 31st, then I think that is a, I think that is a victory for them.

13 House Republicans Gave Pelosi the Votes to Pass the So-Called 'Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill'

"And so on Friday, the Democrats get to celebrate the passage of the $1.2 trillion infrastructure Bill. Ending weeks of deadlock and infighting between the Democrat parties moderates and progressives. Now, if the Republicans in the House had, I don't know, acted like the loyal opposition to the Democrat agenda. If every Republican would have voted no, the Democrats wouldn't be celebrating this legislative achievement. And this giant win for their agenda. Here's the way Philip Klein over at national review characterizes it all. Just before midnight on Friday, we witnessed an utterly disgraceful act by a group of 13 House Republicans. Given the chance to deal a severe blow to President Biden's flailing agenda, they instead rescued him by providing speaker Nancy Pelosi with the votes she needed to overcome resistance from the far left of her party. For months, Biden's multi $1 trillion domestic agenda has been mired in problems. And the goal of the Democrats has been to pass trillions of dollars of new spending at a time when debt as a share of the economy is at historic levels rivaled only by the fight against World War II. The strategy all along was for Democrats to win over some Republicans to their cause by creating a charade that their agenda was actually divided into two parts. A physical infrastructure Bill and a sweeping social welfare Bill. Now, for months, as we know, we've witnessed Democrats have been battling among themselves. With some members, more attached to the infrastructure Bill and others more attached to the social welfare Bill. But ultimately, ultimately, it became clear that the two bills are inextricably linked, and they would rise and fall together.

He's a total. He's a travesty. It's it's actually a tragedy it really is. I don't really there's you could use all these words. And i just kind of laughed at these house. Republicans that sometimes go tv. And they're like. Oh yeah it's so terrible it's look it's just sad it's sad because so few republicans are willing to actually use political power to stop him and so no. I'm not optimistic about the policy direction. I am optimistic that there will be a response to this. I am optimistic that we can improve things and i am optimistic that our ideas are so much better and rooted in truth that the only missing ingredient is courage and this starts to solve itself. It really does. But i i would be fooling myself. Carla. if an all i would be lying like oh yeah now. His policies make no difference makes a huge difference. Of course it does

"Hill, The 1st January sixth commission hearing is Tuesday. This at the same time prosecutions are moving through the justice system. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and top House Republican Kevin McCarthy remain at odds over the panel. As NPR's Mara Liasson tells us, this is the state of play in Washington at the moment, I think That the January 6th investigations really illustrate the deep divide that we have in this country. Nothing illustrates a better actually, we have the worst attack on the capital since 18 12. And the decision about whether or not to investigate. It has become completely partisan. We have Republicans voting against the independent Commission and against this special Select committee, Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader in the House, appointed to Republicans to that committee, both of whom disagreed with the committee's existence in the first place. Arizona is sitting on record revenues despite coming off the heels of Covid. Now having a multi billion dollar surplus isn't something to celebrate. It means we're overtaxing our citizens. "house republicans" Discussed on Here & Now

"Welcome three has it gone. Okay. What do you know about any progress toward ending the shutdown? Well, a meeting began at eleven thirty eastern between President Trump and the so-called big eight the top to congressional leaders from each caucus, and as of right now that meeting is still going on no one has emerged from the White House. So in terms of the absolute latest, I do not know anything. But I think I know this a not many people, maybe they'll surprise us and come out and announce grand deal, but very unlikely to make progress in this meeting in here's. Why it's what you said both sides are so dug in it's hard to see any middle ground. Well, let's look at what happened last night the house passed to funding bills wanna short term Bill to fund the department of homeland security for another month, another one to fund the rest of the federal government. That's currently without funding through September. These would end the shutdown now some House Republicans actually voted for these measures. So is this a bipartisan compromise, we're looking for not not really in the current situation. You're right a five and then seven House Republicans voted for these measures. And and the Bill is almost identical to what the Senate unanimously passed a just a few weeks ago before the shutdown began the thing that changed though is that President Trump insisted that he shifted Carson insisted he wouldn't sign anything without the border wall money and that brought almost every Republican along with him saying that they wouldn't support that either. So Mitch McConnell. The Senate majority leader is said that the Senate will not take up these two bills the house passed because he said he is not calling vote on anything that. President Trump wouldn't sign and President Trump has issued a veto threat on those measures. But there are some who disagree with that in his own party, Republican senators Cory Gardner, and Susan Collins say they want the shutdown to end how much pressure can they end perhaps others of actually applied to Mitch McConnell? Well, the thing to note about them is that they're both up for re election next year in moderate democrat, leaning states. So they're certainly among the I feel the pressure right now, the even though Democrats won so big in the House Republicans gained a couple of seats in the Senate. So it's not a situation where Mitch McConnell needs every single Republican vote like he did the last session. But there that was an interesting early crack in the Republican facade and one of the things we're looking closely for is is due any other high profile Republicans. Join those two there's talk that. There may be a compromise. That includes wall funding in exchange for protecting dreamers streamers being the immigrants who were brought here illegally when they were just young children. And he knows of any movement along those lines. That's one of the things we're going to be asking. But in listening for once this meeting breaks up right now that hasn't really been a serious proposal. It's more. So been something issued or suggested from from people not involved in the direct negotiations were the things that Democrats have been frustrated by is the fact that President Trump keeps changing his mind and keeps undercutting things put forward by other members of the White House, including vice President Mike Pence Democrats have said it makes no sense to negotiate with anyone but President Trump because he keeps undercutting people who work for him. So they're in the room with them right now. We'll see if that gets anywhere Senator Lindsey Graham Republican Senator says that deal with no funding for the wall would do damage to President Trump on the other hand, I wonder who's likely to pay the political price if the shutdown drags onto into a third week. Yeah. One of one of the the strangest dynamics of the shutdown which which is two full weeks. Now is that you haven't seen either side with the exception of a couple lawmakers like we mentioned Gardner and Collins feeling like oh my gosh. I'm we're feeling the pressure here. We're feeling the effect of this shutdown. I do think the longer this goes the more that changes the more actual paydays or missed by federal workers and things like that..
