The Disappearance of Ryan Shtuka

"It's mid february two thousand eighteen in beaumont alberta a town about forty minutes outside edmonton and heather. Stupa is enjoying her saturday night at home with her husband's scott and their two teenage daughters. They have one more kid ryan. I mean i say kid but actually is twenty and he doesn't live with them anymore. He's out chasing adventure with a friend. Working at a ski resort called sun peaks for the winter now about ten. Pm and heather is in the midst of texts conversation when a notification pops up on her screen. From one of ryan's friends. This guy. james sexually the friend that he went out to sun peaks with for the winter and kinda registers at the messages. From james. And things you know. I wonder what he wants but before she gets to that. She wants to finish what she's doing so she just kind of like swipes up to clear the notification finish her thought or her little tech chain or whatever and then clicks back and as. She's reading this message from his friend. It's almost not registering. What james is saying. Which is basically like heads up. Ryan didn't show up for work today. He's not answering his phone. And we're worried so we just went ahead and reported him missing to police. So you're probably going to be getting a call just like f. Why heather immediately gets james on the phone. He's like okay. What the heck is going on. Start from the top. Tell me what happened the that maybe she can just help. Take the temperature down. A couple of notches like problem. Solve this mom style. Yeah is this just a couple of friends freaking out over nothing right. Yeah get him involved. I totally support us. James says that he and ryan and group of other friends had gone out on friday night. I see this bar on the resort called mommas then according to jean strong's reporting for the sun peaks independent news to another place right next door called bottoms for this like silent. Disco thing that they had going on silent. Disco is like when everybody gets their own pair of headphones. And that's how you hear music that the dj is playing right. Yeah okay well in true twenty year old fashioned. James says that no one was really ready to go home when bottoms close for the night at one. Am so they decided to all head down the hill and off the resort to this like little get together that they heard was going on. This was happening at a house. That was just around the corner from where james and ryan lived anyway so they figured like okay. We're gonna head down there. Maybe have another drink and then we'll just go home. They ended up catching a lift down from the bar to the bottom of the hill and then they were walking the rest of the way to the house party and listen to me. This whole trip took like ten minutes tops by one thirty. Though james was ready to go home he tells heather that he saw ryan stand up and he thought that he was right behind him. In a couple of other people who had left the same time but somewhere during their walk home i guess they looked around and realized he wasn't

Deaths spiral: Americas spike in murders

"With the attention of the world media focused on the pandemic last year. it may have seemed as if there were fewer of the mass shootings for which america has become notorious this year. Lamentably there's no mistaking the trend on march sixteenth gunman in atlanta apparently targeted asian-americans. Grisly new details tonight. The atlanta spa shootings tax three massage parlours. In the northern suburbs of the city eight people were murdered. Roughly one hour six of them. Asian women days later ten more deaths at a supermarket in colorado shooting house claimed at multiple lives as the police put it in boulder. We had a very tragic incident today. Here at the king supers There was loss of life second mass shooting with multiple deaths and just one week in this country. Three killed at a house party gone wrong. North carolina six members of the same family in texas a mother and her two children shot by a man who then took his own life in new york. Those murders just in the first week of this month. The pandemic has led to reductions in many types of crime but in america murders seem only to be on the rise. The greatest rise in perhaps half a century twenty twenty was a traumatic year for america. Not only was there the covid nineteen pandemic which at this point is killed. Five hundred fifty thousand people but there was a huge uproar over racial justice in the wake of the deaths of unarmed. Black man in police custody that swept through the country in june injuries. Cologne is the economists. Aus Open Day 6 - Silent, subdued, but intriguing

"Think today day six over the twenty twenty one australian open the first fully crowd list day. I think today was the new year's eve house party that you feel you have to gauge new year's eve show up. You do the rounds for a couple of hours and then you sneak off to a bedroom and go to sleep or it's just the hangover the day after we sit there and just drink cups of tea and no answer any calls the hanger day off to the the banging nights out the ends in where you're just gonna sort of pick up pieces and clear mass. Yes i came. That may be works better. And wait for your next party in a day's time it's the regroup day. It's fresh as week when you when in my case you have one thing and you're saying that's it you can just have a normal week and then you gotta do again the next night but so what you do. Is you just insert little arrests days. Yeah don't understand human beings. The enjoyed fresh week genuinely look back and say i enjoyed freshers week. I didn't understand human level so they walk among us. Catherine apparently say it's not but i didn't enjoy today i just dino it it just i mean there were no crowds. We need the. We're going to be crowds that that was a shame How how much. How much was the fact that there were no quarrel to contributing factor. To the fact that today was a was a bit of a dump squib. I mean this has been the dump squib hof of proceedings burnett. We've we've we've made to conceal that on the podcast. You know there have been highlights will will big those up as best we can on today's pod but how. How much was it the crowd. I think it was definitely parts of it in that. You know we're all. I did feel a bit of a downer just because yesterday was so exhilarating and and it has been such a lovely failing to have crowd noise again. Because we've we've been went out and delivered this last week so that that was in the back of mind. I mean there were moments. I compensated in the way that i would've done with the crowd and then there was silence and i had to say oh i forgot. There's nobody here quite open because it's you might as well just be honest and admit it's weird. It is weird at the same time. I feel like for people like us certainly me anyway. I shouldn't speak few too. But i just i'm so i love watching sport so much when it's when it's tied and when the stakes are high the not having the crowd gives me something else and we. We definitely tapped into that at the us open and through some of the other events because kind of we. We didn't have any choice. It's either embrace that or be down about it all and if you actually listen and watch especially today as this was the first match i've ever seen of nadal at a grand slam. We had the two but at a grand slam especially with the little question marks about the back and all that sort of thing and being being pushed as hard as come pasha possibly push him. I loved just watching dow compete in this role style without any cut-away as to the crowd or anything just so pule to be out to. I felt like a like a sneaked into private match and could just watch. And and so i got something from that and i was intrigued by some of the matches exhilerated. Not really and it is. It is more pure than other slam tennis or any tennis that we've seen without crowds because they weren't prepared for this. There's no attempt to conceal the empty seats. There's no crowd noise track on standby it is exposed before your eyes and is

Chinese New Year festivities kick off under shadow of coronavirus in New Orleans

"Orleans emerged as an early cove in 19 hot spot after Carnival celebration served as super spreader events. Despite this year's new restrictions, the city is still welcoming tourists and that's led to push back from locals offer you House of member station W. W. N o reports. Orleanians typically spend the weeks between epiphany and fat Tuesday, eating, drinking and partying. Last year's festivities drew more than a million visitors in a recent study found the gatherings resulted in nearly 50,000 Corona virus infections. This year there no parades, and many locals have pledged to sit the season out. But that hasn't stopped people from flocking to Bourbon Street, but he was have circulated of largely unmasked crowds clutching to go drinks and dancing. Despite admonishments from the city, people are still breaking the rules. On Saturday afternoon. About half of the people in the cities French quarter were unmasked, openly defying the city's mandate. Revelers stopped to catch Mardi Gras beads thrown from balconies and one middle aged woman lost her mask in the process. It fell to the ground and she didn't pick it up. Seems like these horrifying Matt Maloney, a 24 year old cook. Well, Mardi Gras is known as a season of fun. She's usually stuck working. Sometimes it's nice. You get off of a 13 hour shift, and you go catch the end of the parade and have a drink with your co workers or whatever. But now, I mean, most of us are gonna be running for the hills because we don't want to have a further risk of catching Cove it right In January, she was exposed to the coronavirus of work. It took two weeks off without pay to quarantine. Loney says she wants the city to do more to protect hospitality workers. Here's New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell know that when it comes to our health and our people, especially our hospitality workforce. I'd rather be accused of doing too much. Been doing too little. She's already announced new restrictions for Mardi Gras weekend in response to recent large gatherings in the French Quarter. Starting today through Mardi Gras Day on Tuesday, all bars will be closed citywide. Tourist heavy areas will have police checkpoints to prevent crowding and the Claiborne Corridor, a local gathering spot will be fenced off. City relies heavily on tourism in a typical year, sales and property taxes account for more than 40% of its operating budget. Now, most of that money is gone. We estimate we're still losing about About 120 to $130 million a week. That's Stephen Perry of New Orleans and Company, a tourism organization that serves the marketing agency for the city. Before this new wave of restrictions business had been hoping for a Mardi Gras bump. For much of the pandemic. Hotel occupancy has been in the single digits during last year's Mardi Gras festivities. It was above 90%. Harry says local restaurants and hotels are exceedingly safe. And the best way to protect businesses is to let them stay open. If you shut them down, you're talking about the abject failure of hundreds. Of small business people and their inability ever To reopen well. Some of the crowds on Bourbon Street have been locals or college students will sudden says tourists are big part of the problem. Sudden is a New Orleans native and a columnist for the local paper. He says city leaders should tell everyone to stay home for Mardi Gras. It's like Having a House party. If you have a house party, it's your party. And if it's your party, you decide who gets to come. We like seeing people come and have a good time at our party but wants to have a party and have a bunch of people get sick, sudden says he's pleased with the new restrictions and hopes people stay home so they could celebrate next year. Local facebook board where people are talking about the house party that got out of hand the other night sometimes guns sometimes sometimes drug sometimes who knows what airbnb got to get their act together as does virgo but house parties. Real popular here in nashville. You have that problem where you are.

All charges dropped against former New York Giant DeAndre Baker

"All charges were dropped against former New York Giants first round pick DeAndre Baker on Monday. I don't know if you've heard of him or the story, but the Giants cut the 23 year old quarterback in September following his offseason arrest for allegedly participating. An armed robbery at a House party in Florida. But listen to this. On Monday, an attorney representing three of the four alleged victims in the case was arrested in Florida on extortion charges. Investigators say the attorney William Dean, wanted Baker to pay his clients $266,000 each. In exchange, they would stop cooperate with the police or change their initial sworn statements. According to the New York Daily News, Dina told Baker's attorneys his clients would do anything you want so long as the money's right for the report and after Dean was arrested, the Broward State attorney's office told reporters. All the charges against Baker were being dropped, and now he's able to play again and it will come back. But he missed an entire year of football with all of

"Of these parties are not run by the homeowners, but by nightclub promoters who rent the mansions out for the night said LAPD Hollywood, Captain, Steve Lowery, first of all being the LAPD Hollywood, captain is tight. Title that would be pretty tight congratulations to Steve Second of all the fact that nightclub owners are like. All right. Well, I'm not making any money right now and I've got to get the bag somehow fuck it. Let's start renting out mansions in the Hollywood because you know the Hollywood hills man it's like some of the people live there. But most of them are these very rich liberties that are not there fulltime and where they live outside of the hills that come into the hills for the nightlife the seen everything like that coming in for to party and rage and everything like. that. which arguably makes us significantly worse because if everybody lived in the hills at least it's somewhat contained but I guarantee you there's people that drove fifty sixty miles that night just to come to that party, here's a quote from LAPD Captain Steve Lowery, the same promoters have figured out. Well, wait a second I can jump on AIRBNB spend ten thousand dollars a night for a Hollywood hills mansion and sell tickets and promote the party just like if it was a nightclub, it's exactly the same thing except now my nightclub has an unobstructed view of Los Angeles and a beautiful swimming pool. So, they're charging entrance fees they're running cash bars they're organized these parties organized by secret mailing lists word of mouth. Yeah. It's like that movie. What the fuck was that movie was like. Had An accent this kind of like the prohibition all over again. It's just a little instead of speakeasy as we now have massive LA, Mansion Rangers, project x Yeah Did you see that movie Oh yeah. You know I saw that that's My high school culture everybody had to see that movie a midget jumped out of the oven Ross. It was a not see that movie a little person in the oven was one of the classic moments in that movie. What are the classic moments in cinema and the two thousand ten's ridiculous film I saw that in theaters nobody knows hot take your is nightclub culture over dead done never coming back because hear me out if Cova was not a thing, I would much rather go rage at some massive house party overlooking all of La with Lions Tigers Bears Oh my an strippers and functions way. Dancers in all kinds of good stuff you can get your shockers aligned, get hammered and look at l. a. from the up in the hills obstructed view I. Would you not do that other than go to a bar where people are doing blow in the VIP section and you're getting stripper money all over your hands and stuff like that. You don't need those germs need a nice clean mansion one invitation. Sit For an underground prohibition era, Theme Party last week and promised a quote private multilevel one, hundred percent outdoor venue. One hundred percent is a new thing guarantee Kovin. Might leave. But this, why would you like this is sick other than the you know breaking all of the guidelines and not being safe at all don't do this now folks I'm just saying but for future my good vibes and me I guarantee you party promoters are just GonNa Start Renting out mansions, and then doing this like secretive prohibition style speakeasy it sick it honestly is pretty sick. I gotta be honest although again I just want to make it very clear. It should not be occurring at this moment. Sure. But in the future we'll be sick I have always preferred. House parties to any other kind of party agreed hundred percent agree well, here's the. They get the the energy is more up in house party. So I have a good house party story if you want to hear it because everybody's more familiar I, want to hear but you know what I'm saying like in a nightclub, it's filled with like. You and your boys and mostly strangers the House party mostly. Money to get more drinks yeah. Sounds like you like to do here too. But well, yeah. Okay that's actually. But usually if you're in a house party scenario one, maybe two degrees removed from everybody there. True Right. It's less strangers but especially, if this is invite only and also like imagine this, would you rather pay a one hundred dollars up front for an open bar at a house party all night with No or would you rather spend fifteen dollars every trip to the bar to get separate cocktails? You know what I mean. I would rather do the open bar to house. The only thing there is then you then you got me thinking about New Year's eve where it's like. Pay Two hundred dollars for. Never Ending Champagne on night in jess up and be a fucking idiot and I hated those I hated those but they were never at houses. Okay. We're always in hotels he we had house parties are we had new year's at a house every the past four years I've been to the same new years eve party somebody that just has that has that fucking reputation for crushing A. New Year's Eve party it's just like we did it two years in a row, and then it became one of those things or is just expected that every year after will still go to the same house. It's like significantly further out of the way than any of my other friends houses it's like forty minutes away from my house just worth it. Yeah. Because it's the same people every single. Year and it's like it's a nice kind, a full circle thing. So you see the same people at the beginning of every year every year it's been great so far. So the good vibes going into the new year always at an all time high nobody's been shot though definitely not shot yet. That's never know there's usually a lot more weed than guns which tends to make people not. Shoot each other for the most part. Yeah. I feel like you're you're less inclined to pop the Glock if you've just smoked a joint guarantee you if you look at every shooting that's ever occurred at a party and then you go back to the Party and look at the ratio of we'd to cocaine. The cocaine ratio is at least fifty one to forty nine cocaine ratio is too high. Simple. You gotta lower the cocaine ratio and raise the we'd ratio and you lower your shooting percentage all around where what Your House party story. So one time. This is an infamous story in my family. We call it the epic. My parents decided that Chaperon my sister's. Church ski trip. Okay so I was eighteen years old almost eighteen hours a like a month away from being eighteen, this January of two, thousand and seventeen. Can. So they go out of town for the weekend. and. So the House to myself. And for three nights in a row, I had the same group of six people come to the house like my close friends we had a nice little. We call them kickbacks where I'm from, which is like take a house party and the knock it down like three notches that would be a kickback. So smaller group more chill vibes not loud music everybody just kind of hanging out talking. So night, three rolls around parents are coming back the next day. This is. The first night that like everybody is free to do something. So in my head I'm like well, mom and dad get back at like noon tomorrow. This is a horrible idea ms terrible decision I'm sure and also the cleaning lady had just come by the week before to the House is spotless when they left I'm talking spotlit which you're not getting back to that stale. No absolutely not you don't have the steady hands or the tools, not even close and so. Of course dumb asked me decides to, of course though the party. At that time was trying to thrive in the party scene. It was like when I first started drinking I think I had my first SIP of alcoholic two months before that I waited awhile before as soon as you nothing is more important when you're eighteen years old then like house partying exactly. Exactly..

"And don't have house parties during Cova but have house parties when you can because there are a lot of fun. Yeah. Last quarter lasts will bid here on this Los Angeles House party situation that's out of control in the Hollywood hills according to Hollywood United Neighborhood Council president and resident George SCARPA SCARPA LAS Pre pandemic there were ten to fifteen parties each weekend night. Okay. That's still sounds you know first of all George SCARPA LOS I don't know if he's like is he driving around counting the House parties? Now he's got up personalized shop and I was GonNa say it's the Hollywood hills maybe he's got chopper spotlight and he just goes he's. One to where there's only six people that doesn't count. That's a kickback. Three, four get what ten to fifteen, each weekend he says now quote there's like. What which makes the Hollywood hill sounds like it's just totally out of control with people raging all over the place and I need to see footage of this like from chopper, which there are out there. There are actually saw a little bit of this footage on CNN this morning it's pretty hilarious. Choppers aren't getting in close enough. They need better shots I wanNA see like the bonds in the fucking I'm talking Beerbaum, the Flip Cup whatever else is happening there it's just the votives won't. Like a like a on. A terrorist style house going down a hill literally four hundred people lining the rows of the house just looking out over the Hollywood hills hilarious. Just getting. Smashed getting limited round out the pain. It's House party season for the super spreaders. My favorite thing about it too is that the government is saying we do actually have the power to shut their water off, but on first time cities and electricity, but for first time, violators were choosing to educate not enforce good guys. Let's be honest here. If they're at this point, they know exactly what the fuck they're doing. Education is not GONNA do anything. Enforcement that'd be how funny would it be though if like the beats about to drop in their lights, go off into the waters turns off at a five hundred person La Hills mansion everybody at the same time Oh your house party with the power went out. No I have really our fraternity house was was a piece of shit. It was like the Animal House if the Animal House from Animal House was like three times shittier that was Really Yeah that's shit. Now it was it was shit that's like the determine that's like the quote from moneyball whereas have you ever seen money moneyball I've seen. Like this is the league, then they're six feet of Shit. Then, there's ten feet of dirt and then they're six of ship and then there's us. Oh Yeah. Here it is. They're rich teams in their reporting. There's fifty feet of crap and then there's us. Yeah. That's where the That's where the what. Billy Bean K. House mine was yeah. Yeah. That's how the okay. Hey a house lines in with the rest of southern. Fraternity houses, K hey, hey hey. Never say for nobody's ever never no no. Rb Twenty one is also brought to you by bird dogs, makers of the most comfortable all-purpose shorts in the fucking world. You can literally wear them do anything anywhere at anytime. So what are bird dogs their gym shorts with a built in Silky soft inner liner that makes underwear completely obsolete there's shockingly comfortable feels like you're wearing nothing like you're just walking around half naked wandering society. Without bottoms on like Winnie the Pooh. It's fantastic. They dry faster than bathing suit. You're going to work out and bird dog jump straight into the pool get out drop in the sun where him to drive around your Tesla because you have a tesla now than drive that Tesla back home, wash it with your golden retriever Elvis because you're wearing bird dogs and.

"Lord why yeah, why did we need to go to Jack in the box every night after the House party ended and it was like Thankfully nothing for me for me and my people nothing really terrible happen avoided tragedy but it's incredibly unsafe and we didn't have uber in the shit that Y'all have now. So just don't drink and drive is my point house parties tend to lend themselves to drinking and driving don't drink and drive. But. That will you describe like field parties, right? Yeah. We never really had to fuck with that because house was essentially that but with house, right? Yeah. That's the best of both worlds. If you needed to take a shit, there was a bathroom inside. Yeah. But there was also the field if you wanted to like take off your clothes in Shit Yourself I. I grew up in like a it's a weird thing because I grew up in an area. That's very nice. But also you drive ten minutes you're in the country fields everywhere, trucks everywhere farms everywhere, and so I had my fair share of like crazy, Mansion House parties with beautiful pools ride on the leg three million dollar five, thousand square foot houses and et Cetera et Cetera and then I also had my fair share of somebody brought a pickup truck playing music out of the pickup truck with all. The windows down in everybody's drinking on the bed of the truck with one firepit and you're in the middle of this random Ashfield or like. So we where I grew up to there's a lot of neighborhood expansion like a lot of brand new neighborhoods are being built and it was a very normal thing to go to a neighborhood, those being bill and find an empty lot that didn't have a house on it yet, and that's where we have our field part pussies. We took it one level further zones. Party in the House Nice. Like one of my one of my buddies neighborhood was a gated community. Yeah and like routinely not not all with me and my group we were relatively respectful. We had We had the access to houses where we throw parties like that one with that. I was telling you about yeah. But on occasion there was jackassery and at one point I remember we usually do party in in a house that was being constructed still and just can't imagine what it was like for those guys to show up to work the next day the construction guys to show up toward the next day and just be like a God. Damnit. Beer cans everywhere vomit cigarette butts everywhere butts everywhere. Bro. Just just disrespect. I couldn't how finished were these houses like walls on them you know very, very much like Yeah. Yeah. It was fucked up through nine. Yeah a bit fucked up actually one time. There was a big a big happened because of that situation at my high school I wasn't personally at this party but a lot of friends that were at this party allegedly And then allegedly and then and so the day after it happens again, they go to par. So one of the MOMS was like a realtor I guess and. I never got the full story. If the mom actually said, you could have some friends over and then it got out of hand like way more people showed up. Much. Against the realtor code. Yeah absolutely. But you never know with huff kid seriously some of those parents liked party just as much as their kids did or huff kids. That's why I went to high school. High School and so shelves to hide never got the full story if she had allow or if the mom had allowed it and let the kids go in and then they just invited way too many people or if the kids somehow got like the lock box code and winning regardless party occurs at this House that they're working on selling your there's cameras all throughout the house and everything like that. So at school the next Monday, a friend of mine gets a phone call the phone calls it was a voicemail. He didn't answer the phone because we were in school, and so he plays it on speaker and it's like, hello, this is attorney so and so we have camera footage of you blank. At this address at this time, we know you're there if you call us back and give us three names, we won't press charges, and so nobody was gonna rat because they weren't sure how they could like actually. Like, make it like connection happen, and then one person ratted and gave out three names and then everybody ratted because everybody was like fuck this. Takashi. In the fucking listen to this, the attorney was so smart about it too because once she got one name like legit name. Call the person and she'd be like well so and So, and so already ratted on you and would give their specific name. So you might as well and then it was just a snowball effect classic investigative. Dick's. League intuitive rooms and they tell you that the other person already ratted on you. So you might as well give them up to win. It's not true. They haven't said Shit yet. Maybe in the next thing you know both of you're talking yeah sack. Yeah I mean as and I I actually forgot this wasn't during the school year these kids I remember they got the phone call when they're young life camp so like we didn't have cell phones, they got a phone call camp they got a phone call on the camp phone and got called To the camp office and they were like, Hey, there's attorney online for you. Oh, great way to start off what you want young life camp but yeah, good ole school man never rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut and don't have house parties during Cova but have house parties when you can because there are a lot of fun. "Most of these parties are not run by the homeowners but by nightclub promoters who rent the mansions out for the night said LAPD Hollywood captain Steve Lowery First of all being the LAPD Hollywood captain is tight. Title. That would be pretty tight. Congratulations to Steve Second of all the fact that nightclub owners are like. That which arguably makes us significantly worse because if everybody lived in the hills at least it's somewhat contained but I guarantee you there's people that drove fifty sixty miles that night just to come to that party, here's a quote from LAPD Hollywood Captain Steve Lowery the same promoters have figured out. Well, wait a second. I. Can jump on AIRBNB spend ten thousand dollars a night for a Hollywood hills mansion and sell tickets and promote the party just like if it was a nightclub, it's exactly the same thing except now my nightclub has an unobstructed view of Los Angeles and a beautiful swimming. Pool. So they're charging entrance fees, they're running cash bars they're organized these parties organized by secret mailing lists word of mouth. Yeah. It's like that movie. What the fuck was that movie was like. Had An accent, this kind of like the prohibition all over again it's just a little instead of speakeasy as we now have massive La Mansion Rangers. Project X. Yeah did. You see that movie oh? Yeah. You know I saw that that's My high school culture everybody had to see that movie a midget jumped out of the oven Ross it was a not see that movie. A little person in the oven was one of the classic moments in that movie. What are the classic moments in cinema and the two thousand ten's ridiculous film I saw that in theaters nobody knows hot take your is nightclub culture over dead done never coming back because hear me out if Cova was not a thing, I would much rather go rage at some massive house party overlooking all of La with Lions Tigers Bears Oh, my an strippers and functions way. Dancers in all kinds of good stuff, you can get your shockers aligned, get hammered and look at l. a. from the up in the hills unobstructed view. I. Would you not do that other than go to a bar where people are doing blow in the VIP section and you're getting stripper money all over your hands and stuff like that. You don't need those germs need a nice clean mansion one invitation. Sit For an underground prohibition era Theme Party last week and promised a quote private multilevel one, hundred percent outdoor venue. One hundred percent is a new thing guarantee. Kovin might. Leave. But this, why would you like this is sick other than the you know breaking all of the guidelines and not being safe at all don't do this now folks I'm just saying but for future my good vibes and me I guarantee you party promoters are just GonNa Start. Renting out mansions and then doing this like secretive prohibition style speakeasy thing it sick it honestly is pretty sick I gotta be honest although again, I just want to make it very clear. It should not be occurring at this moment. Sure. But in the future we'll be sick I have always preferred. House parties to any other kind of party agreed hundred percent agree. Well, here's the. They the the energy is more up in house party. So I have a good house party story if you want to hear it because everybody's more familiar I, want to hear. But you know what? I'm saying like in a nightclub, it's filled with like. You and your boys and mostly strangers the House party mostly. Money to get more drinks yeah. Sounds like you like to do here too. But well, yeah. Okay that's actually. But usually if you're in a house party scenario one, maybe two degrees removed from everybody there. True Right. It's less strangers but especially, if this is invite only and also like imagine this, would you rather pay a one hundred dollars up front for an open bar at a house party all night with No. Or would you rather spend fifteen dollars every trip to the bar to get separate cocktails? You know what I mean. I would rather do the open bar to house the only thing there is then you then you got me thinking about New Year's eve where it's like. Pay Two hundred dollars for. Never Ending Champagne on night in jess up and be a fucking idiot and I hated those I hated those but they were never at houses. Okay. We're always in hotels he we had house parties are we had new year's at a house every the past four years I've been to the same new years Eve House party somebody that just has that has that fucking reputation for crushing A. New Year's Eve party. It's just like we did it two years in a row, and then it became one of those things or is just expected that every year after will still go to the same house can it's like significantly further out of the way than any of my other friends houses it's like forty minutes away from my house just worth it. Yeah. Because it's the same people every. Single year and it's like it's a nice kind a full circle thing. So you see the same people at the beginning of every year every year it's been great so far. So the good vibes going into the new year always at an all time high nobody's been shot though definitely not shot yet. That's never know there's usually a lot more weed than guns which tends to make people not. Shoot each other for the most part. Yeah. I. Feel like you're you're less inclined to pop the Glock. If you just smoked a joint guarantee you if you look at every shooting that's ever occurred at a party, and then you go back to the Party and look at the ratio of we'd to cocaine the cocaine ratio is at least fifty one to forty nine cocaine ratio is too high..

"I think you're going to be hard pressed to find anyone that can traverse this many. Gina's they did it all and and it still resonates. It doesn't like you know it's not like a flash in the PAN. I think there's a lot of things always quick money grabs and stuff like that you know. And this has this kind of amazing lasting staying power and you know unlike a lot of Saturday morning cartoons you. This one was inspired but a movie. That was really well reviewed by critics. I've actually a really hard time finding negative view of this movie. Everybody came out and they're like that was really fun. It's aside so here's the clip of the one that I did find Ed here this is from party. It just says House Party is determined to show us that for all their Appalling language and joey say in manners these are good kids at heart and everyone seems annoyed by the fact that these kids are so good. He's six form of kids complex dual wooing of the two sexiest girls at the party. He's got both on his hands and all he can do is sit there. Patiently while being lectured on how birth control works Then the says you know there's not much else going on in this amicable. But overlong and under plotted movie doesn't about as harsh as it got like. Almost they're just expecting a different film. Yes I think it's also like that thing like an old review attorney like understand what kids are like and there yeah does not not for them at all People who wanted to bring up to in the chat like John Witherspoon is doing three different conversations at once in the phone scene and yeah that that scene he is so so good at IMI. We're coming a little bit to the end here but I wanted to ask a question that we ask. Every time that we talk about a movie we know of a movie is good if it has a simpsons clip of theirs. Simpson's has been inspired by it. Were the simpsons inspired by House Party? Oh were they inspired by house or I mean well I mean we're they I mean. Is There Simpson's clip? I guess I should say okay. Technically no there is no Simpson's clip however the inspiration question is when I find quite interesting Uc House party comes out in spring of nineteen ninety and right at Spring of nineteen ninety. Another really interesting historical thing is happening. Which is that. The Simpsons are wrapping up their very first season. And they're suddenly all over the site guys. Simpson's are huge actually pulled this clip from a newspaper article because I love the first line. We're thankful that Batman the Batman creates died a quick death but did he have to be replaced by that yellow menace Bart Simpson and that Green Venice. The teenage mutant Ninja Turtles. The idea that Batman craze could have died amazing. Nineteen ninety predictions So what's happening here in? Nineteen ninety is a couple of things like let's go through the size and I'll just talk about them as we get there Oh Oh sorry I should have said that. Last line of that paragraph by the way is how long until Cowabunga into shorts one of the major food groups in Webster's incorporates Cowabunga. So I did actually look this up. in Webster's dictionary and they have not yet incorporated Cowabunga. They had no good for that. I need to check anyways. This really was the time of Bart Simpson's shirt because it was just huge an everywhere and there wasn't that much merchandise yet so illegal Bart Simpson shirts everywhere. Being seized by Federal Dudes as this newspaper Article Says Federal Dudes who had taper. I love newspapers. Dot Com love going archives one of the versions of the simpsons shirts that got spun out with something that people were calling. Black Bart and it was a simpson shirt where Bart Simpson was instead. Look in a laser like a lot of veto positive. Fun really kind of cool t-shirt so I have a few of them that I'm going to show you guys of these bootleg Black Bart Simpson hearts. Dala this is so interesting ex. Yeah drugs really fascinating. It is and so then. These shirts started as today. Think peace is right. And here's where House party comes back into the fold because these things are hip at the same time. So they're doing articles about these bootleg shirts and they're interviewing if you look up close at it they're interviewing. Reggie about this there asking what he thinks about this moment in time and you know this collusion of pop culture and black culture and like where is culture going and so I think it goes I the first one talking? And here's this one. About the sky. High Rate Hair S Simpson is all the rage. But some say they spotted before Bart and here is where kid actually does get full back into the conversation because they start quoting him in his hair and saying you know what this are actually before Bart Simpson belongs to kid and also March. I love it. He just wanted to March as an example. Because there was this synergy of like kid in his hair and the simpsons all having this shared pop cultural conversation in the spring of Nineteen Ninety and one person wrote about kid and she says something that I liked a lot. She kind of wrapped it all together. she said that Kid Has Been compared to both Tom. Hanks in Bart Simpson which I adore that you know. I think he has Not just the Bart Simpson type of hair. But he had I think Tom Hanks likability that really shines through in house. Party is because we've already talked about like Tom Hanks to it felt like perfect. Pull this little clip up about kid and House Party and then of course you could maybe say that if there was anything to as a Simpson's acknowledgement of House party in the culture. That was now taking over the airwaves. Because of movies like House party because of the songs on the radio it will be that the year after House party comes out the simpsons launch the Bartman. Their own dance. So let's watch a little bit of the bar stool dance take away but still just a singing a song. You'll be remember one and then by do the Bart. Everybody back officially say that. Thanks to the music on the radio. Thanks to house party. Thanks to the simpsons now folded in Nick. It there's no mistake. One thousand nine hundred. One hip hop culture is mainstream pop culture so basically this is. Yeah this is this is the this is the first shot over the bow and house party breaks through like through. You know in a major major way I. I love that kind of connection and I think it's only fair to say if you've heard us talking so much tonight about House party you might feel like well maybe I want to own a piece of this and and and you probably can. Let's take a look at the real house from house party which was for sale a couple of years ago right amy. It was actually not incredibly far from my house and it made me really WanNa go so it was about this. It looks like he filmed house party just really in that House. The interiors look exactly the same. It doesn't look like it was that much of That for a lot of it except for the down just saying yeah. There's the door frame. I check the same beams. This how the House and it sold for I mean John. Witherspoon live next story about that house for fifteen thousand dollars that house was I think in the millions at that point now so things so some things have changed amy. It's been so great chatting with you about this movie. It's been so great to talk to. Reggie and Chris about their experiences in this. It's such a fun movie and so exciting to see have life now so many years later. I want to give a big giant. Thank you to the people behind the things that you don't see molly who's in the chat talking Everybody in the chat Devon whose everything in our producer Josh Who is just making sure this? All run smoothly. We have a great team and we appreciate all of them. Devon show yourself molly show yourself? You guys didn't take a shower for nothing there you go. Yeah and the hackers setting and It's so great to see them all there Thank you amy. Thank everybody by goodnight.

"And what they do they do and Zane I mean that. Maybe I don't know whatever that came into. We were impressed. Have everybody look and dance and like us. We were like we're like we're young. We like you know who cares. United saying it was it was all loud and you know I like. I said it was nice to to see I on rap widow. Reggie you know we change. We chains each other's lives and I appreciate his You'll his intellect and his His his accuracy. You know if he don't write it if he doesn't write it and you're right appall so you know if y'all righted we can. We can talk it. But it's the combination of everything. Good you guys brought so much to and it's been so great talking with you and you can follow you on social media. You're you're on instagram. What's your instagram handle? A kid from kid and play. Yeah Yeah we got the popping in. I appreciate which which I'll doing man and Paul Zane Watch area. You are morally big fan of yours. And Amy. She's she's she's she's like Queen Thorough that Sunday. The best. We're going to do a thing you're going to be in this thing that we're doing that's coming out in a couple of months this scroll wheel time in thing. It's good you're great. You're you're awesome. You're good all right. Great one of my favorite movies ever thank you so much. Love see later right. Thanks so much. My Gosh. This has been awesome. Amy talked to Chrysalis. Oh Great Tucked me about this movie it. Obviously we love it. We've talked about. We've heard so much now about this film we haven't even gotten to get into the nitty gritty of just some of the great characters in it. John Witherspoon Robin Harrison. We'd like wraps it. Has when do the right thing episode? Oh and Robin Harris one of the interesting things with Spike had shown. Reggie a cut of do the right thing. And that's how Reggie got hip to him in this film and he died nine days after this movie was released Robin Harris. And then Reggie went on exactly executive produced base kids which I never realized was done after. Robina died Fees on love does his voice in that which I did not know. Yeah and you know. Robin's death is kind of this framing device around the Pajama Jam and He's kind of talking about it nicely but one of the the notes that New Orleans enema did give is they thought Robbins. Delivery was too hard to understand that it was just too much of a dialect. And they're like you can't have that guy be that character and he fought to make sure that Robin was the dead. I think Robinson's are some of the best scenes in the movie. I mean Oh yeah and seemingly completely improvised from everything that I kind of red and you know just and there's such a funny scene and again another post credits scene like the beating happens over the credits you just hear it like over which makes me laugh. Yeah I mean there's so many little clips I wanNA play. But I don't know if our if our video stuff is working. Okay but you one of the things I really admire about. This film is even as it is big fun. Bright Teen Movie. I think that registered a good job of kind of lacing in real life or a teenager you know kind of putting it in what it was like to be say a black teenager getting stopped by the cops which is such a recurrent. The movie ends. I wanted to play a clip if our stream has working of a scene where the cops I arrest kid when he is at the party with all of the rich people in George Clinton officer emphasis an accident and we don't want to press charges. Well he's have been in a few accidents to save the should let this slide by. They need discipline not solitary confinement. Thank you scared statement. They're not gonNA talk. They're not gonNA. They're not going to press charges. You perpetrators were very lucky tonight. Apparently these people aren't going to press charges so you'RE GONNA get up. Go home and go to bed but before you do. I want you to repeat after me. I am what I am. Come on with Phelan somebody really. This is ridiculous. All right. That's good care up and go home beat it. I mean it's just so sharply written. There's a whole scene. You know to have a comedy is a big break comedy and figure out how to write in bits talks about like condescension stereotyping getting it in their very lightly make making it funny keeping it in the rhythms. It's not stopping for a very special moment. But it's just so perceptive and intelligent and the way I love how that audience crowd you know the Fussell people have been glaring at kid for wrapping and being like Oh this horrible modern music but immediately pivot to his defense and take his side against what they find just to be this encroachment. Yeah on this is what a lot of people in the chat. Were saying. That was a really powerful moment for them as a kid to see that in debates it is really cool moment in the movie. I think is very light touches on all of this stuff. It's not like hitting you over the head. It's like it's still a funny scene but it saying something from the Reagan stuff too that it's it's all peppered throughout the whole film and I thought it was interesting. Maybe we're talking about like what this movie. Kind of launched but I have a clip of kid and play after the movie came out right when the movie came out there doing like That kind of a cake come see our movie and this is maybe an idea like not knowing exactly where the movie is going to go but what they're thinking about. Every day was doing music. All agree in schools We enjoyed it looking forward to doing it again. If the price is right we might be able to make health party to or wrapping raking three rapid who his love identically. You know this is this movie it did. It created so many of these films. People didn't want to get rid of these characters. I mean there's five movies in there in the first three they've popped up in the in the in number five we'll kind of talk about where their character show up but it's like they spun off movies and cartoons and I wanted to talk a little bit about cartoon because you have a couple of this cartoon right and I just pulled the opening credits because I thought they captured so much of the Great Energy.

"Took a lot of things that we saw. That was really great about you know the House party movies particularly that one was it really mirrored things that we had gone through as as young people as people growing up in high school or you know in terms of family and stuff like that so. I mean there was and particularly. We're playing like we done these things already. You know we have been to the party. That three four five o'clock in the morning dot in trouble and got beat down. And you know what I mean. That's why when I say a beat down beat down. Beat beat beat. Beat down is the beatdown. If you come into or becoming a five you know what I mean. You'd I mean it's the beat them as a deep out and I think having been through what I've been through I'm to duck and will pour some dumping the cops. I'm Doug I get to the party. I'm happy I'm relieved ago like this might be the last one time of my legs. You know I'm saying you know you know when you were sneaking up back in the days you know. Doesn't you know what's going to happen? You hold the hammer is gonNA strike. But she just like you know what you know I had. I had a friend of mine. He was A. He's the he he was married by and he would get in trouble. A lot of times is wife. We'd get mad if he was trying to go out at night. You know what I mean like. She wanted to go up and he will look and say well. You know what? Hey No use both of being mad. So I'M GONNA go out all right I I mean. There's there's so many extras in the Party. Scenes that you get to see everybody over and over again you can get to create relationships that you hate dancing with for some reason and having to have this party going on the number of days. It must've taken to get this sequence like did it feel sort of like a party like a craft services or people just exhausted like you're around this same group of people everybody's dance everybody's sweating everybody's young. What was lewisite? Bob was excellent. I think we shot a lot of those Interiors are on Culver City Culver City. Lot and You know look we didn't we in. Reggie could tell you exactly but I think we shot that movie in five weeks. You know so you have. It wasn't like why sequences only half a day. It only took dancing was as I recall the call. The dancing was like the whole day. Like no and they were like y'all today. We're going to get everything going to get the kitchen. We're going to get the whole thing. We're going to get the battle you know what I'm saying. They got that whole day. They got both those dance battle and they got the rap battle. You know yes we don't got. We didn't have that luxury and as as young actors. We didn't know no better. No we just like you know we all young in our twenties and we just like you know I could dance all day back then. You know we can dance all day so I just remember a lot of energy and and as you can see but I'm GonNa tell you I'm GonNa help you to something real quick all right particularly for amy's Amy's the knowledge because if you WANNA watch some of the interesting people in the party scene when we're doing the battle scene when playing are rat battling. There's a young lady to the right of the DJ. She's got red on and she is dancing up a storm like an we. Don't so this day we don't know ABC's dancing so the music all the words or whatever. She's got lights curly hair and she is. She got gloves on. You know what I mean talking in yet and she is dancing with the unbridled passion abuse to meet. Got To kind of what that movie was about and we was like. We had no idea that that this thing would would on you know. We add hints along the way but You know for people to still be trying to talk about it all at after all the and and it having been kind of a platform an a boost off for a lot of different actors and and you know it was great for us. It was great for Reggie. It was great. You know a lot of the different. You guys involved. You know I mean look you so you create you. Have these singles you get this big album this giant movie you turn cells into cartoons you become a cardinal show. It's like you have this tremendous everything and I was reading that there was a little bit of a vibe on the set that it was a cool movie because stallone came by like Denzel. Washington came to your rap partied. You remember that at all or well I remember I remember I mean Denzel was was always friendly like you know he would come by. He's come by like a few of our different productions but I just think there was A. I don't particularly that. First House Party will be so many of us. It was either our first movie or we will like really really early in the game obviously was offers movie. Martin had been in a in a couple of things but wasn't really really experienced old force the bullies first movie and they were amazing. Honestly the person that had the most experience with politicians he should Campbell Ryan. Who played you know my girlfriend or whatever and she was. She was amazing she you know she was great to work with she. You know obviously Reggie was a first time director so you know. Come on Paul. You've been a big Fan. You know you know when Yala just doing yards which is just going to do it and we don't we don't we don't know better and that's okay. That was a good thing so we weren't there was nothing. There was nothing. We were scared of pregnant. Ross yes she has a playful fun now. I Have A. I have a controversial question to ask you. Because here's a thing I met you when I was in New York City. One time you were having dinner at a restaurant. I got your autograph. You were very lovely young kid. You're super nice now. Play went to my blockbuster video in where I worked. And I got his autograph where we say Assets. I acid so he would come in there him and Natalie Portman when I was working there also you name. It was the best. It was amazing. Now when you signed your name you sign your name. Christopher Reeve now he signed it brought this in. I'm sure to you house party. Vhs thing he signed it kid play. Yeah well you know. Sometimes we would token we'll do you know what I mean. We had. We had that relationship okay other that yeah right but on that tablet. I'll tell you I'll tell you pony soy Back in the days while at the same time so you know I was still living in Queens Queens running around and this. This brother tried to stop. He's a big kid allergy and I'm like come on man you know China Johnny Global Business Knowledge. Making get real and he ran. The brothers Brandon brother ran me down. Let me get your Autograph Bank Real Quick and I said I me let me get his autograph any any pull out bootleg copy house party. I said man. He's a he's you can't. I wanted before we let you go obviously USA this which I love. This is like a picture that you are in the famous hairstyles of cinema right here. Justin you Dr. So look at this. Yeah here you go. I mean it's true like the most famous memorable hair. You got it. You didn't it bids I mean. Can you imagine that the most memorable movie hair? I'm in the top ten of that spray. Your I in the top three. Honestly gleaned Princess Leia you yeah I mean I talk to and the thing and this is what I tell people. They always ask me about it like that. I was like Yo like I walked in the door like that like like. I think that's how I got the job like you. You will yo look. They didn't make me do my hand like that I walked. We will like that. We as Reggie was stating earlier like you know. We had a vibe. You know we live and empl- you can appreciate this. You super creative when you're young are vibe. Was you know when these young cats come out now young you know entertainers wrappers or whatever they come out and they say man we. This is didn't dance. This how you dress you do. It like goes back when we were coming up we would like. Don't don't don't do this right. You don't do that. We do this. Who are the entertainer? Yeah we're we're the cool kids with kids. All that mattered was our crew. You know what I'm saying like they were like we were like whatever you do. Don't do this if you do this. You corny you abide. We told him don't do this. Don't dance like US dress like us like a we don't.

"And third single bird hit single was called game funky and then then the record labels said they will give you a record deal. You know the Paul you know how is if you got like I'm GonNa do you. GotTa keep improving yourself every game. But that's just what it was so you know what know it is about it. You just like I we gotta make another another. We got make another And so we had three joints in a row our producer by the way our producer was Herbie. Love Bug who you know had blown up salt and Peo no small feat whatever you know. We got the hottest producer and so they give us a they give us a record deal and on. I Album was go out. And you know it was a big deal and I think that's what those songs in those videos is. What came to Reggie's attention? Yeah you know and I love hearing I was low loving to hear. Reggie's you know his take on every bang you know by the way he's looking like looking real Danny Glover Ish. He looks good. He's got that car. Yeah I'm a I'm going to give him my colorist dumb but we would. That was the that. Was you know that was the Vibe we were and I think that Reggie was picking up on You know he was in New York we will we will. We will hot. We were hot in New York and HIP. Hop Music was hot. It was coming up and Reggie. Reggie was really really really smart. He was was always thinking about the next level type stuff and originally he would approach me in the clubs in New York because I was always did was never there. You guys are kind of different. So you are more of the partier. Yeah and he was more but we didn't. We didn't start that way that way as kids. We known each other since Zulu like well twelve and thirteen. And when I you know I was. I was when we first saw the hanging out. I was the Geek you know I was the I was the kid the guy that went to you know. I went to the Bronx High School of Science. You're like I was. I was a smarty. You know any play was you know. He's like a stick up kid he was like he was. You know what I mean. Those match made in heaven we will. We will watch jeopardy and made that I knew the answers and then we would go out somewhere. I'll be amazed that he knew all the felons so it was kind of bringing together. You know what I'm saying. So it was a natural friendship and I think Reggie picked up on that from the videos. And then you know as he as he recounted I don't want to recount what he recounted but you know that process. We know we got to know each other and I remember reading the original House party script and I remember thinking like he said it was an all right but it was pretty. It was the closest I'd ever read. I've read a lot of scripts that people had proposed for for playing. I do it was. It was my job to read back then right. Yeah but a group. You know your game like you wanted to do you want it to get. It does not bad but I think I think we all had dreams about like you know being famous and doing cools Rela and all this and that and I think at the time I think Reggie was referring to. At the time you know we were. We were we. Were doing okay. Like we were touring Allott and that was plays Bob plays. Bob was like an before. He no not talking about it but we that was an internal discussion. I was like Yo I read the script. I think I think I think we can get it there. You know. In my opinion I was like Yo manage joints like seventy percent we can. We can bring it the rest of the way. This the best thing I ever read that somebody wrote that a process of Bader ran and so you know we went back and forth need him And and heard me love bug and play more your we go to but I think I was thinking like Reggie I was like a man you know you never know when we could end you know and that's what happened but you know it was I don't know when and I'm sure Reggie can attest to this as well. Like when you look at all the different things that had to kind of come together. It's pretty amazing. And and then you know when they did and and then when they did and they did they did and now it's thirty years later and people feel as you know I don't know emotional and as positive about the movie as they as they did in. Yes the best. The crazy part like you can't you can't predict that but but it's it's part you to. Alchemy of everything. That's why people respond to that moving and the movies after it's like because it's your relationship. It's a relationship in the movie. It feels like you are hanging out with friends in these characters feel real. They feel good you know. They don't feel like stereotypical characters way. Let me tell you a quick story because but but I know I want to get to a question from amy. Because I've been watching those. She asked the best questions. You don't have a year Paul. Don't lose your. He's the best I know. Go you go downhill. Believe me know but but I'd say I'll tell you a quick story that let me know early on like a business on different so so he did the movie. The movie's game ready to come out. So they doing various screening. Whatever so they tell us they say yo couldn't play come to this theater in Newark. New Jersey Newark New Jersey. Break City. We're GONNA do a screening by these high school kids from Newark. No problem you know you know what I'm saying. This you know like the Christians in the lions like this. How you're going to know where we stand right. So we go to the screening and they put us up in the balcony where they can't see it so the crowd on no with it the kids. They don't know where that we're up there. Just me and him me and play and we're watching. We're watching them. Watch the movie and they was one point in the movie and I'm sure. Amy knows this because he knows every move. You are right. It was a part in the movie where you know. I'm running around the cops. Are Jason me the full force chasing me? I'm running around and finally I see a play and Martin in the car. They going to the Party and I'm like I'm trying to wave them down. I like Yo Yo yo Yo. Yo Cook School me. And they'd drive right on right and the do says the only one that kid and he said man you know play was whatever and we in this theater and some young brother from down below one of the young high school kids. He stood up and said play you way. Shit is the first time anybody's seen this movie anyway and it was that it was that blatant you know what? I'm saying like and we looked at each other we would like Yo do like rick. You know what I'm saying. They saw me running from life trying to give it to Maske dudes up w said play shit and the whole crowd was hat looked at him like year by the. Phobe as this isn't a question exactly but I was hoping we could watch my favorite forty seconds of the movie as a group which is when you finally make it to the party and you walk in and you have this entrance through the whole house all the way around. It is my favorite part because I think the happiest biggest joy bomb on earth. And there's one to watch it together and I want to ask you about filming that scene because you just radiate happy right little what you pops you know how. How much more trouble can I get? Beat down beat down here. You members you. Don't y'all look who took.

"Step for wow and And there was a a young executive who worked for new line cinema who solve a house party short and today we should meet and I have a trip. So that boom I wanna make and they said okay. Let's make it so you know short film plus SPEC script job was risky though at that time because it seems to me like this movie feels very like independent was it. Did you have to jump through hoops? Do they want you to change anything or they like you make your vision. Right was. That was interesting because I I got a set of notes that were just all wrong right right and I was like no no no you don't get the spiritus at all right but I get that mice could be better right. Okay you know this is the key part. You know like their solution may be wrong. But that doesn't mean that they're not pointing at something that's law right right. What's a note under the note right right so I went to work and I rewrote the Strip Better I didn't know anything because again by Very documentary orange itself. I'm learning okay Screenplays reacts okay. What's you know? I don't know anything right. I'm the figure out as I go so rewrite the script. It's much better. They like. It's and a green light and it's like Oh my God making a movie so so no well. We need SARS right so I'd seen before. Et before MTV was playing by videos there was a low show New York video music box. And you watch that you would see cool stuff so I saw the kid play music video like when you just play. It was awesome. Like who are those guys are visual cool so I talked to a friend of mine? Who WORKED AT THE MANAGEMENT COMPANIES? That handle get outside out. Are they good guys? They show Jim work on time. What's divide their lex yet? They're great byles great so we came in. We picked them the movie and they're like our Mel Man. I'm supposed to go on tour this summer so at were money. Were the main your little no budget movie. I'll tell you gotta change a life a you know in this office which is about like a closet. Em Yeah Anyway. I could this to do it and I was like gold and platinum albums. I did know had gone platinum out right. Yeah the kid play personalities that are in the film. Did you tailor it to who they were as people were like how well defined where their personalities in the public eye before this film while they were I mean they they were cool? Fun Guys. Ouseley play was the slough older cool Ri- play at the High Top phase. So He seems a little more wacky so just. Kinda gave kid my personality which is like a shy guy with a cartoon ability and I always had a much cooler friend right so I just made play the much food or friend and I just can't from there you know Doesn't go I love this movie is. It doesn't feel stereotypical because even in the beginning he's not like a wimp. He fights back like he like kid isn't that they'll fight in the beginning throws the Jello like he's not most movies big. Don't hit me or he's afraid of them but he's not backing down there. Something cool about him. Which I think is different. You know the thing is if you were scared of finding the Europe talk and the audience we're done with you. There's no reduction. We're not waiting ninety minutes where you you're nuts to drop why it's so if you find it lose. That's respectable right. I left that he had to be respectable. Can we actually show like that screen from the movie of of the Jello fight? I think our children up for the producer. Because I want to ask you about it. The JELLO hits. A picture of Ronald. Reagan was wondering I mean. Is that like a political message? Now it's back go. Man beat more on Hammer. The point like this no school that actually has pitches the president. Your from all trove of team movies are Kagi. Yes but at the time it was funny he was time it works. I mean it does work. I I also WANNA get in your head of because I've read a bunch of articles about this but I haven't really heard anyone take on how the movie opens and the post credits scene in the film. The movie opens this dream right and the roof is coming off the house and then at the end of the movie. If you if you don't watch the credits you won't see it because there's a little blanket of credits and that roof comes falling guy and kills or at least names. Those two police officers at the end so talk to me about like that the guy loved that framing device it so it was like Whoa. This is really kind of crazy and fun right. Well I mean I rely okay. We knew that like a credit sequence right like okay. We'll what will make you my attitude. Then and now is kind of even with the motion picture like I feel like you have your five minutes tops to get someone to drop the remote control right right like you know you know you. You'd sit there and pay your money watching the movie and the you settle in or do you go. Maybe maybe we catch the movie next right or go to the other part of the multiplex right like so. You've gotta like Bell. People so I figure if we literally blew the roof falls right in the George Clinton We'd actually open like that. Act RIGHT IN. A dream sequence. People will go. Why didn't know what the Hell does this? I've never seniors movie before going to watch right. Joe That was the sphere. And then you know in my cartoon mind. I was like well. What happened to the roof so I said okay? Let's let's have a know. A Greasy Crates Ouseley Marvel Bitney of right their credit sequence where the roof lands on the cops and I remember I just thought it was so funny so then the day were shooting. And there's a giant crane holding his room. Face awareness dresses. The COPS is okay. Shoot the chute the real people then switch them out and my devious light. You know these are the type. This giant Crane swingers him. Yeah I love expensive but that's expensive right. For example ambitious four twenty seconds is right but I later. I didn't hear I didn't know this. At the time that there's a rate middlebrooks quote right where he was pitching something space falls and the The studio exact has pretty expensive. Joke and Mel Brooks says. No joke is to instance right. If you laugh..

"Stopped watching. I Wash House party more than any other film for the entire. I probably watched it more in college. Just that last year than every other thing. I watched throughout coach. I just thought it was the perfect platonic ideal of a movie and it made me excited to be a film critic because I feel like being a film critic is you know not saying like. Oh there's our movies and T. Murray's our movies are great and T- movies are nonsense win. A film is perfect and I believe. House party is very close to perfect. The film critics job is to celebrate that and pointed out and say like Oh bill is great and then I I am not quite as verse in the rest of the franchise One of the very rare times in my life that I ever took a pot Brownie and watched a movie. It was to watch house party to the Pajama Jam. So excited to watch it like I was just like the House before film. I've been putting off watching until this moment and that movie is so sad because kid who I love so deeply loses everything he loses. His daddy loses his scholarship his girlfriend and all of house jam just one tragedy after another and I couldn't take it in the state that I was in like I was bereft so I've never watched it again. Oh Man I hope. They brought it back for House party three. We're going to talk about where this franchise goes towards the end of the show but before we bring out. Reggie who I'VE WORKED WITH A COUPLE OF TIMES. And who is just a great guy and has had his hands on so many amazing things and culture from house party Boomerang and Black Panther and B. E. T. And even up until black Monday. He's done so much cool stuff. Let's go back to win. This movie came out which was nineteen ninety thirty years ago last month. Thirty years ago last month is celebrated its anniversary. And I'm going to give you some year facts from nine hundred ninety. Okay so wave your hands in the air. Everybody it's one thousand. Nine hundred. Ninety NASA launches the Hubble Space Telescope Saddam Hussein orders Iraq invasion of neighboring Kuwait. Us and UK since trip to quit for Operation Desert Shield paleontologist sue Hendrickson discovers the largest and most well preserved tyrannosaurus. Rex fossilized skeleton nicknamed sue. The T rex specimen is more than ninety percent complete thirteen feet tall forty feet long and sold for eight million dollars to Chicago's field museum. The US enters a major recession and the removal of the Berlin Wall begins. Wow nineteen ninety two hot movies of the year. Were Ghost pretty woman home alone and today's film House Party. That little idea what's going on by the way that suit t-rex you can't get anywhere in Chicago without seeing that around. That's even in the airport. Got Online yes still is not in the airport but they got like a lot of a lot of memorabilia tive so this is a big year a big big deal have you seen. I've never seen I've never been in Chicago. Chicago's a great city. You GotTa see you. GotTa see sue. I've seen sue in house party but let's play a clip from the movie. Just a little taste of what this is about. I have a rap battle between kid. 'n play at the center of the movie. Might Oh you want some of this oldest possessing the tools that it takes to rock. I think it's time for the new kid on the block while yet so unique to reach reaching peak. Because that's how I gotta live. It's my prerogative I gotta give them off the dance floor and I'll make your brain saw kids rather than just like a chain. Dan Mask Grandmet. Hands on American bandstand. When teams play and mind reason straight out the eighties quite into the nineties highs and lows drama got juice McKee. Well if you know having in because kids must more than hair smile I'll see you all that and then salt plus party and run for one to be careful and don't you step to the front to kiss dismissed with and make you sorry that you have to this Michael Foale place obey isn't GonNa be race ahead put some money on your feet and that's Capitol Heights. One move and you'll get to answer. Just tell me how the rods and cut down paintin way out already served you stay out past. Curfew has been in place. I I love this. This opened a big question for me about this because Kim play as we know them are a rap duo right they are. They're they're together. They're friends but in this movie they're not like best friends they're kind of like it's an interesting relationship in the grand scheme of movies with best friend's this movie kind of breaks a lot of rules. And what would you say that? They're like good buddies. Yeah I would say like this. Movie has a look at fringe. But there's a lot of competition between friends and it's kind of figuring out. How much can we toss over the same things? They like the the play that present Florida in this movie. You know kid has kind of the sweetheart like getting having stay up past his dad's curfew like he's the kind of sheltered won his mother's dead he's sweeter he's more innocent whereas play as like in this movie kind of a jerk like they kind of let him have a characters like. I really fastidious like this is my party. I am the coolest. I'm the only one who gets to wrap. I'm really bad about taking care of Martin Lawrence his feelings when make him. Dj FOR FREE AT my party. Which is very relatable. Wreck is equipment. Amy They record and then you also. Have you know the other pair of female best friends in here? Who are both quietly crushing on kid? A little bitter like messing with this feelings and then having to figure out their whole dynamic. There's a whole world in this film. You know. We talk about John Hughes Movies sometimes at their best when they try like pretty in pink getting into the economics of the world. But here in House party you see that all four of them have different lives. Different kind of family structures. You know that tissue dishes family. Her parents are wealthy. They go to like benefits whereas like her best friend straight. Who like her house? She lives in the projects and they talk about all the differences and how that affects their life and like. Who Do you want to do because of it really complicated world with these friends? It's not I'll just like we're homogeneous and we get along. I totally agree. I mean if you've not seen the movie which you should see but like let's explain the movie because I think if you don't know anything about it you just assume it's about one monster. House party but the House party relatively plays a small part in the film. It kind of reminds me in ways of like super bad like the party is there. But it's not given super bad. The party is the climax. The party is the passport is not the climax of this movie. It's not midpoint the center point. This is jeff point you know Leslie ticket. Says she feels like Kit in play are just quote associates. Who are both interested in rap? Don't think is interesting and Briana. Brito points at something that I think is really interesting about this. House party like you would think a house already movie like you're saying is decadent and stuff goes crazy and there's goats running through with this movie your one thing about it is like. There's a lot of vacuuming. There's a lot of take care of my parents house. There's a lot of There's age. Sex Amy they sex hosting yes. A supplement here about how drinking is kind of lame eight high school like two kids drink. They both pass out and they're not fun and everybody makes fun of them. I know it. It's I think that this movie is more realistic than you would believe it to be because I think every time everytime you a party in a movie whether it's like animal house or you know almost famous or super there are these larger than life things going on and this is just a normal night. It's like a Wednesday night house party and a lot of things go on. Not Out of the realm of possibility. And you're right about the John Hughes Comparison. I was thinking about this movie. Very rarely do talk about teen movies decades after they're released and this is a movie. They have a lot of similarities. Because I think they are ground in universal truth about being a teenager exactly. I think there's something really universal about House Party. You know it's not set in particular town it's kind of an everywhere ish. Americana town it doesn't I would say it doesn't get too deep into individual character personality traits like it's not about like whereas somebody going to go to college like there's no greater life beyond this. They're worried about it. It's kept to this but yet it's still really realistic. It's very easy to work your into relating to this film. What's funny because this movie is such a gigantic kit and we'll talk about how that gets to that point that you forget that it's an independent movie. This is a movie that was based on a short film and it has some of the hallmarks of what we know as an independent film. But it's about teams and it's comedy and it's fun. It's but it's like they can't necessarily do all of that either just because it's just not gonna they. They can't afford to do all of that. You know it's a very simple kind of film. Yeah exactly and I love this film. Premieres it's in nineteen ninety January nineteen ninety like the of a new decade and it wins one of the major appraises one of the major league. American dometic prizes. And it's so fascinating because you know the year before is like the famous year where sex lies and videotape goes to Sundance. Put Sundance on the map and kind of launches the indie world. But this coming right after it makes me feel like hungry for almost this indie really big comedy world. That House party seemed like it was inaugurating but it didn't really get followed up on. You know those films were missing. That should've existed. This would have paved the way for. Yeah absolutely and I feel like it's so I think a lot of the times what you do. Is you kind of gravitate towards making movie of the now especially with With films that are involving teens right is like everything is totally topical and current and the issues that you deal with aren't necessarily I don't know there's something about these issues that seemed like universal and they thirty years later. They are the same issues that kids would be dealing with. Yes things have changed. So there's five sequels to this movie and I think we'll get the verdict on whether or not any of them hold up this but I wanNA talk before we bring in Reggie WanNA talk about. Who Kid play. Were when this started. I think a big piece of News Akeem out a while ago. Was that at one point a will Smith and DJ jazzy. Jeff were attached to be in it and they were like not an hour. We're going to do something else. And so it came to Kim play and and so Kim play. Are these like they've had these two big albums here? So take a look at this. I just WANNA show you like these two big albums that they had out there. One was chew hype. And that's their first album and their videos are playing on this. I kind of Cooler version of MTV called too much music and then their second album which comes out the year. That House Party comes out is fun house and I WanNa give you a little taste of what they are. Like as duo. So there's a clip from One of their videos. This before House Party came out.

Right now was the last movie he got to see in the theater before quarantine because it was playing at the new Bourbon. La New Bev always excellent excellent programming. So I try to come up with an evil quiz for you this week. The Evil I can think of is. I wanted to give you a quiz on important houses. So I'm calling. Who said it the stars of House Party or House? Md? This is going to be tough. I'm ready yes okay. All right question one who said it the quotas. You are basically a stuffed animal made by grandma. Okay I mean that has to be the the very dry wit of the very angry house. Md Am I right. Let's see here. You question to mind blowing decisions because head on collisions.
