"Relied at any given spades table. You will see also arguing. I mean i level yelling. But you know. I think it's good to get your emotions out but i don't but to your point i don't know if there's enough of it at there used to be and i loved it shoe as a new jersey native jersey girl. Love that you chose to binge our queen our queen of new jersey. Oh yes street. Has she taken over from Like dionne warwick another new jersey. But we need to give from dion before been dethroned by her own niece great. I think she'd be know she'll be okay. So how was silkwood. Oh and silk went. Of course i'm mcnichols movie. Where meryl streep plays like a whistle blower at a plant. Okay i had forgotten first of all. There's just a whole bunch of random people in this movie. That totally forgot about like david stra farren and diana scar would from mommy. Dearest is in it. We put her in a good movie. That was nice of us and share. Giving her explosive oscar nominated supporting performances. Karen silkwood lesbian roommate. And i remember you see all the stories about this all the time. When her name appeared in the credits people in the theater would laugh like oh shares in this movie like what a piece of shit this must be and then of course. She wowed them. What a crazy moment. In pop culture share had been in combat to five and dime. Jimmy dean jimmy dean before that and years and years ago in a flop called chastity. She of course named her child after butts she. This woman just decided. I'm bored. it's nine hundred eighty-three. What if i was like one of the best actors just like we just kind of take it for granted now that she nailed it so hard and was in subsequent great performances that decade with mask and Moonstruck obviously what she went an oscar for. You can't forget mermaids et cetera. suspect i'll give you suspect. I love suspects. Okay yeah. I miss when most movies were like suspect. Just like a legal thriller. Let's not forget burlesque. Ooh you would be remiss. Shares is good for last It's sort of now. I guess we're like I think we've accepted after's of that. Caliber like george Job they weren't really laughs in like gaga being in stars. Born like the credits. Because you're going to see that for her you know. She told herself into that. Although i'm sure they'll be some laughing and house gucci i am a new for me birkenau way. I know i said this. She's making me long for the subtlety of exactly ethical..

"It's funny it's sort of. It's a little bit of a history lesson or at least for me about what was happening in. Belfast and late sixties. So i i would think that would be there but i. I'm wondering you know. We had chris file writes something for us about the toronto choice award in and it's it's weight. I wonder what that will mean this year. You know it wasn't a full tiff where everyone had. You know the not does the entire breadth of the award season lineup to watch but but at least you know the most of it and i would say there was probably not even a third of it this year. Sorry that was question katie. You asked me. And i didn't respond to you but you're like. Is there anything you specifically want to talk about your last little goldman and actually one of the things i want to talk about is is sort of now that you've hit a couple of these festivals. Richard what we're feeling like the shape of this year will be. We talked a lot about last year. How different oven award season like how certain elements of the usual award race. Were missing in terms of like boots on the ground conversation. Lobbies sort of you know. Pass it Chretien of narrative. So i'm just wondering like from what you've seen of chretien narrative at telluride at tiff etcetera. Does this feel like it'll this will be more akin to last year or will be more more like you know years before that i think it will be a little bit of both. I know that's kind of a cop out answer. But i think that i was talking with some pretty high level publicists kind of people at telluride and we both. Were you know we were all kind of agreeing that like i. I've seen a lot of best actor contenders. I've seen a lot of best actress. Best director lot of this that that. But i don't know if i've seen a best picture and i might sound like a silly to frame things because what does that even mean small win best picture. Huge things wins back win. Best pictures set pattern. But like i just don't. I don't feel that own since so i think that in in some ways having festivals back and there are bigger movies. They're more movies. It will feel like a quote unquote normal pre cova year. But also i remember last year kind of always for the next thing being like well. Yeah this will be good. But there's this on the horizon or this coming and i think that we're going to have more of that sensation this year. People are already kind of like wondering about the paul thomas anderson more. I mean more than they already were and west side story was a big topic of conversation because you have musicals and contention from cyrano to potentially in the heights to boom which keep by the way hearing good things about you know so. That's kind of whisper campaign before most people who've been seen it now so yeah i think that kind of anticipatory like maybe the next big thing will be the the one that really like blocks this award season into interview and and into the the shape we want it to be And maybe that will happen. Or maybe we just have to kind of look at what's already screened and and sift through that and figure out who's gonna come out on top but yeah i would say that acting acting wise justice last year was very stacked acting category lineup We're doing well But best picture don't know you know. I thought maybe going to belfast. I was like this. You know it's black and white. It's roma but it's ireland. Discounts brand on people. Love him. And i think it has the l some elements of that kind of Weight but not not enough to really Take it all the way. I mean the ones. I'm working out for on terms of that like what's on the horizon. We can't see usa stories. Obviously there but you know remake of a best picture winner complications there. But don't look up. The adam mckay movie. Which now has a proper a teaser. Data mckay has twice kind of rushed into an oscar. The last minute with big short and then vice. So we'll see how that one saks up and then housing gucci. I think we of like are we were so excited for house gucci and yet no one seen it would kind of keep forgetting about it but it does feel like you know i think the last old got somewhat mixed response at venice None of us sina. But i still feel like that one's really looming on the horizon. If it's a lady gaga versus chris stewart best actress race. Like what further gifts could we ask for. You also have the released guts. Never won best director thing. Yeah he's ever won an oscar. He has zero oscars right. He's no no oscar because he didn't get one for gladiator winning best picture and two movies out. One of which has been sort of you know mildly received the other who knows but it's certainly very anticipated so that could absolutely be a narrative. But is that more for director narratives and picture. Who knows richard. You mentioned musicals in contention they do feel. We need to discuss your hansen which you did review you. Think someone unfairly have become notorious among us is like being the hands inhaler when like your none of many people with criticism of the show and a new review. The movie i mean honestly like i didn't feel like you really went into it with knives out and i think a lot of people have been like. Well it's the show so if you had a problem with show you would have a problem with the movie. In addition to i think the much discussed casting a teenager but so how did it live up to what might have been your lowered expectations for the movie. Yeah i mean. I really really do try. And this is the core tenant of my work. I really try not to go into anything out. You know like. I had my problems with the show. But i'm willing to give the movie the benefit the doubt and and i think that there is stuff in there in endearment hinson that is that's worth it you know that like i think they're great performances Caitlyn deavere is so good. I had no idea she could sing like that. i'm endless. Denver consumed beautifully. Joe julianne moore singing the big eleven o'clock number that one rachel bay jones on broadway a tony But was not in for some reason not in the movie even jillian you kind of pulled it out so so there. There are positives to it. I just think the two big problems with deer finance are Yes that ben. Platt is too old for the role and kind of looks it. I mean they're a bunch of twentysomethings. Somethings in the movie. But he just he just looks older. I mean they. They're trying to cover up at five o'clock shadow via makeup or cgi. I don't know And it just doesn't work and you wonder what how much more powerful it would have been headed been someone closer to that teenage to you know time period like if the the the emotion have registered more rather than kind of sitting there and being like and now it's time for ben platt to sign this not And then the other problem. The big problem is that..

"Knows he's portrayed in the film. I this could be. He's been a long searching for film. That's putting them in oscar category at this baidu. It will see unhoped again. I'm hoping lewis's his last oscar was for pursuit of happiness was got nominated. I'll have to check on that. Why you guys are doing that but I mean this could be something that he's looking for. He's shunned. i mean the the suicide squad sequel shunned other movies us the vacations. But i think with this movie. Hopefully it will portray the williams in a in a good light and hopefully will give kind bumps once. Yeah yeah he's someone that is still a name out there and and you know someone of that that he can still produce beyond move. Yeah and he's hungry too like he's he's despite by the you know you hear about his like winding a lot in hollywood but he's hungry for those for those roles that will give him you know. Give him the the notoriety he needs to win awards and you can't say that about a lot of the other actors out there. So can i ask you a question gerald. Are we now moving into the danger zone. What this is like this. They've been hyping this for so long. They put out the poster. Yeah talk on average. Just put it out. Just put it out to do that. That ponroy i was i was i was. Yeah i was so afraid. You're going to introduce it. And i wouldn't get to make that joke. He was waiting. I was i was all right. So i mean what's what's right in one. The pursuit of happiness for will smith and is nominated and for ali ali muhammad. I love the originally grew up with it. It was one of the few movies. I watch with my grandfather. He liked it. I got to return to val kilmer as iceman. So i'm looking forward to that. I'm sure it'd be the cheesy tropes as usual. I hope that makes all scenes and stuff. This is twenty twenty one though. I don't know if you're going to be able to do that stuff anymore. Shirtless volleyball volleyball volleyball. Seeing veil will they will guarantee she's lost that loving feeling. I don't know it's it's very it's looks like a very vibrant film and like i. I don't know if this is going to be the same. As coco bad of me to say like but kinda neat you know. I didn't like i thought Riot in the last dragon fell flat for me and Luca was not great. But i'm actually kind of with you. I thought it was fun and entertaining did you i it was i mean his okay but it was better than rather less on my gosh anything's better than that one. But yeah this. This movie looks good. it looks good. I wanna talk about is another rhythmic spot. Movie with adam driver and that's house gucci. So funny because adam driver just not this weekend with a net and he's gonna blast tool in his fate british. Supposed you french accent. And then now he's gonna do house gucci love the other movie houses power. I think either of lots hit this year. I think it's houses into with adam diver and little got up. He's you know what's funny about ridley. Scott here is like he's. I don't know if these are like he's wanting to break out of the genres that he's known for like in his as he's probably nearing the end of his road but Like these films feel so off for him and part of me is like fearing how whether or not they'll be good at parties kind of excited to see like what he does with a movie. That doesn't actually have a sword in it late ever evil into rushing city. I mean guys. We actually even go back to the live action resident evil series. I mean it made a ton of money for sony. Made over billion dollars as a series but jovovich. She's not associated with this time. So i mean it's something you guys are interested in big. Are you wanna go first. I got some here. But i want to hear your. I mean i've watched the last media jovovich resident evil. And i mean i could barely make it through which is like it was motorcycles explosions and just masses of told michael bay run wild not even michael beta the the last rose. Neil felt like he was made by the guys that made crank. Okay yes you're one hundred percent. What else can you do. It's a video game it's a. It's a movie bombs. How many times did you do it clearly. At least one more so well course. Infinite their dead they don't they. Don't stop this so here. My thoughts on this all right like i think with the renaissance of these remakes risen remakes. End them like sticking to the actual mythology of the games. It could be good. I think what initially turned me off of this this movie even when i heard there was a remake the fact that they did how many resident evil with me a jovic was there seven or eight. There's eight costed word to say the words too many two minute. Yeah exactly yes yes if it was something there's like two or three and it has been like a good ten years since we've seen any of them. I could probably be more on board for this movie but like right now i don't. I don't associate resident evil with like successful film franchise. I don't know for me. It just is something that i think is needs to be put to rest for a decade or so. That's what i'd like to do with the marvel movies. Just give it a superhero movies. Give it a rest for a while too much money. Know all right. what's next. What's on the list. Necks comes out in the december third. Got nightmare alley flea wolford vendetta. I don't think anything really stand out of les. Paul verhoeven has a comeback as a director. While probably won't have unless starship troopers to comes out. Which i would hope for the best. It's meeting or redo to start super of the series. Maybe just throwing it out the tenth. Are you got steven spielberg's westside store and already seen within. The heights was critically well received but had a lot of controversy. Which made it a box office disappointed. And i've seen a net. That was a good good music. Moons ago i mean is west side story. I mean stephen steal can just go ahead and do anything he really wants to. The thing is in the middle of condemning does ever. Will everybody go out and see everything that puts out there. Nothing no i mean. I don't know that it's a musical. You know not to sail can be good but if you're like someone who's kind of debating on what movies to go see and you're not really like interested in seeing a lot. Especially during pandemic times your. I don't think this is one that you're going to be like really aching to go watch. I guess like. I think it's gonna be something that people will see. But you know when you think about oh steven spielberg gut it. Oh i don't. I don't know about that like they're going.

"Don't like the accents the accident. Our little distracting. Maybe they'll come up better in the movie gaga looks. Great driver looks great. I don't know what is doing. I don't know what he's doing. You really doesn't look bad is no. That's gonna win the that just that just the trailer just sealed jar looks better than the christian bale did. I'd have to look up. Who this person is. He's playing. But i think just a makeup looks fantastic lined up his role this year with all that makeup and this is jeffrey. Tambor cancelled kind. Yeah that's probably what happens. He got cancelled. He could have had this role because he gentle executive. Jeffrey tambor in in this movie. But i'm i'm looking forward to it i. It's still my year in advance winner right now. So we'll see what happens. The season progresses but Yeah so that is that and now we can spend like me my opinion. Oh go ahead. i guess that's a perfect segue to the last topic of the day. I had some ryan murphy vibes coming in with the assassination of of for salty. So i had a little bit of that fuel coming in through it Gog obviously looks fantastic. I do agree. The accents looked felt a little weird at first But i think it'll come off a little bit better on the screen. So i don't think it'll be too bad I think everyone looked terrific. Obviously the fashion is gonna take is going to be a big Play for it. And you're going to have people that are may just be casual movie goers that are really gonna see this movie for the fashion..

And it's so funny because i you know you look at the review on of the things. They mentioned this color palettes and whenever somebody mentions color palette brother. Yeah yeah well you know. It's all about them sweets. We color palettes. But yeah is like you when you hear stories about you know the the knights of the round table you hear about our theory here about gwen. Aveer you hear about lancelot. But all the other like nights. What what cliven. Yeah his King arthur movie back in two thousand six. I think when that came out but they did a good job of giving all the different nights like their their due time but like with most movies. You only hear about. Arthur lancelot guevara. It's often highly romanticized. So it's cool to get a tale that hasn't been told before you know and and fascinating one at that. Well definitely looking forward to catching that sometime this year when it becomes more accessible but the other movie i wanted to talk about was matt damon movie and i'm not talking about the last duel although it's kind of funny because if you saw traded this week for the house of gucci you realize it's another ridley scott movie with adam driver starring in it which takes place in it gets released a month after another ridley scott movie with adam drivers targeted and so to see that ridley verses ridley one month after the other and seeing which one will do better as such financially and critically house gucci. I've got my odds on the house gucci. I think so because the at accidents reported talked about. That's such a weird movie for ridley scott to do so out of his wheelhouse. "From NPR news. This is all things considered. I'm Ari Shapiro and Mary Louise Kelley today. A Louisiana abortion law is not taking effect. The supreme court voted five to five to four to block it for. Now. The law requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at local hospitals opponents say it would have left Louisiana with only one doctor able to perform abortions. Now Louisiana's not the only state looking to restrict access to abortion. So to get a sense of what else is out there. We called Mary Ziglar. She's a law professor at Florida State University and author of the book beyond abortion Rovers, his weight and the fight for privacy. I asked her whether we're seeing more states take up the issue. Now, we are. I think I'm in anticipation of Justice Cavanaugh voting differently than his predecessor, Anthony Kennedy. Who is of course, the swing vote on many abortion cases. I think there's an expectation now that the court will go further in allowing states to restrict abortion or maybe down the road even. To ban it. And so how does the law in Louisiana that came before the court this week compared to what you're seeing and other states? We'll do Louisiana law doesn't go as far their states that are considering much further-reaching abortion restrictions. For example, Mississippi bands abortion at the fifteen th week of pregnancy, Iowa and a handful of other states span abortion when a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is around the sixth week of pregnancy. So the law that the supreme court enjoined is not as sweeping as some of the options that the court would have in terms of potential cases. Do you think there are other state laws that are likely to arrive at the high court within the next year or two they're definitely some possibilities? Are the court has had one possible case in conference multiple times. And hasn't decided yet whether to hear it that case involves an Indiana law that was part of Mike Pence's governorship that has to pertinent parts one regulating what the law describes as the dig. Unified disposal of fetal remains another banning with lawmakers describe as eugenic abortions, either abortions in cases, for example of down syndrome. So the court could hear that case quickly if it shows to it's already on appeal from the seventh circuit, there are other cases that would take longer to get to the court are now pending, for example in states like Texas and Arkansas those include laws regulating dilation and evacuation procedures. Those are the most common second trimester procedure. So there are a lot of possible candidates. It's probably a question of when not if an abortion challenge makes its way to the supreme court when not if an abortion challenge makes its way to the supreme court. Now, you mentioned that one reason all of this action is happening is that people expect Justice Cavanaugh to be more conservative on the issue of abortion than the Justice. He replaced Anthony Kennedy in yesterday's vote. We saw chief Justice John Roberts side with the more liberal justices in putting a temporary hold on the Louisiana. Does that mean that chief Justice Roberts is the new Anthony Kennedy, or is it impossible to read the tea leaves in that way from this one action? I think it's it's a little bit early to declare John Roberts the new Anthony Kennedy, but even before yesterday's decision. Everybody widely expected him to be the new swing vote on abortion. One of the interesting things. I think is that chief Justice Roberts may have different concerns. Motivating him to sort of sit in the middle on abortion in part their concerns about the supreme court's legitimacy and reputation. There's no reason to think that chief Justice Roberts is particularly sympathetic to abortion rights claims on the merits that said he may have a concern about the way, the court approaches abortion rights cases, especially if it looks as if the court has made a sharp swing to the right when it has a majority of nominees who are both Republican, but also who seem committed or at least predicted to overturn Roe versus Wade. That's professor Mary Ziglar of Florida State University college of law. Thank you for joining us. Thanks for having me. This week has people across the country looking back at their yearbooks.
