A Preview of Upcoming Oversight Hearings

"There's two different sets of oversight hearings that we're going to take place in the next week that I want to see if you're going to be plugged into or reporting on or can give us any detail of what we might expect. One of those is the subcommittee to probe the COVID-19 pandemic. That's supposed to be in the offing next week. And the other one is the House foreign affairs committee is going to be looking at Joe Biden's handling of Afghanistan in the pullout. Now both of those are of great interest to me and of this audience. Do you have any insight as to what that may look like, who's some witnesses might be and what we can expect? Well, yes, but I actually think the foreign affairs committee want is supposed to be today. And so I just want to double check myself, but they have a series of different types of people. So they have people who are specialists in the military in the U.S. Army. They have people who are part of sort of evacuation groups that we're going back and trying to get Americans and U.S. allies out when they're sort of seemed like the stall at times from the Biden administration to admit that there were Americans left behind. So that would be like a task force pineapple. Sort of founder and people. And then you have allied airlift 21 as well. So I think that they're going to be talking a lot about the efforts to get people back home. Great. Even when the messaging from The White House was different.

The House foreign affairs committee has voted 24 to 16 to give president Joe Biden the power to ban TikTok and other apps. Committee Democrats oppose the bill. And I think it still needs to get through all of Congress to get to the president's desk and that might be unlikely, but cloning gizmodo. A fast tracked vague Republican bill granting the Biden administration the ability to impose a nationwide TikTok ban moved a step closer toward legality on Tuesday after passing a vote in the House foreign affairs committee. The sweeping new legislation, if passed into law would grant the Biden administration the ability to totally ban TikTok or other foreign software companies believed to be involved in the transfer of, quote, sensitive data. Critics, including the American civil liberties union, say the slipshod bill introduced just 5 days ago was haphazardly written and could potentially open up scores of other benign apps to potential bans. Democrats on the committee strongly opposed the bill during arguments and amendments with ranking member representative Gregory meeks of New York claiming the unvetted over broad bill quote causes more problems than it corrects. These are not just bad policies. They would actively undermine our national security makes said. Republican lawmakers intense obsession with banning TikTok could potentially this bill passed the house, but clearing the Democrats Senate majority is another story with few Democrats likely willing to sign on to such an expansive broad bill, the so called data act will likely be reduced to the increasingly cluttered garbage bin of killed TikTok bans.

Rep. Michael McCaul: Chinese Spy Balloon Was an Act of Espionage

"Here's the chairman of the House foreign affairs committee, congressman Michael McCall, with Maria bartiromo yesterday on Fox News. He says, 5 balloons have great capability to gather and collect intelligence. I would argue more so than even satellites in the sense that they're flying it say 40 to 60,000 feet above the earth, the imagery that they can capture and other intelligence data that I can't be specific about can be captured and then transmitted back to the mothership in Beijing. They have control over these balloons. This was an act of espionage and plain sight plain view of the American people. I know there have been reports of prior ones, but none quite like this. And the reason why this one is so damaging is I do a damage assessment about what really happened that day, this balloon went over three of our most sensitive nuclear sites. One being in Montana that runs the triad that's air land and sea nuclear strikes and counter strikes that went over our strategic command in Omaha, Nebraska, where our biggest stockpile of nuclear weapons exist I mean, don't you think that Biden should be addressing the American people about a blatant act of espionage? From the communist Chinese party?

"Visa, a letter to Biden on January 12th signed by dozens of lawmakers, including senior Democrats on the House foreign affairs committee, urged the president to reassess Bolsonaro's status in the country to ascertain whether there is a legal basis for his stay and revoke any such diplomatic Visa he may hold. And said that U.S. should cooperate with Brazilian authorities in investigating the role he may have played in the attacks in Brasília and any other criminal activity he committed in office. The attacks in Brasília were built upon months of pre and post election fabrications by mister Bolsonaro and his allies claiming that the October 30th presidential election had been stolen they wrote. The United States must not provide shelter for him. It's hard to square the seriousness of the actions of his supporters back home with the surreal scenes in Florida. At an event organized in his honor by a conservative Brazilian expat group on Wednesday, Bolsonaro sat under a spotlight on a small stage in a strip mall in Orlando, perched on a purple armchair next to a fuzzy Ottoman and a single flower. Videos posted by people in a small crowd of mostly Brazilian American fans who paid up to $50 to see Bolsonaro show him draped in the Brazilian flag surrounded by people praying over him and being serenaded by musicians. "On all of the social media and a very, very happy Thursday to you. Lots of things going on. Parents are being kept in the dark regarding their children, their children's sexuality, what's going on that in the classroom that teachers are hiding from parents. We're gonna dig into that in a little bit. Plus there's a war on law enforcement. Really, the word to me is on Law & Order. And we see it at our border every single day. We see it in large urban cities all across the country. We've got the European strongman, Vladimir Putin, he continues to wage war on Ukraine in his quest to restore the once Russian Empire. And meanwhile, you've got president for life Xi Jinping, the mullahs, the Ayatollah, and the rest of our enemies all continuing to be emboldened by President Biden and the Democrats weakness. That's what's going on. That's what I see. Meanwhile, some people did something. Yes, that's right, Ilhan Omar representative Omar from Minnesota. She has been ousted from the House foreign affairs committee and here's what Kevin McCarthy had to say about that. That's the clear part how it's not tit for Ted. "Schedule your free in home estimate. It is four ten. President Biden's calling for fresh bipartisanship and cooperation in Washington. Let's just sort of join hands again a little bit. Let's start treating each other with respect. This president made those remarks during the national prayer breakfast. He indicated that he and House speaker Kevin McCarthy are doing their best to work together. But not long after, though, those remarks, there was new friction on Capitol Hill. The Republican led House voted to pass a resolution, removing democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar from the powerful House foreign affairs committee. The GOP argues Omar should not serve in light of past statements she's made related to Israel that in some cases were criticized by members of both parties as anti semitic. Ilhan Omar Getting Booted From the Foreign Affairs Committee

"It looks like today Ilhan Omar is going to be kicked off the House foreign affairs committee and this also means that Ilhan Omar will no longer be the top Democrat on the subcommittee on Africa. This is something that she has taken great pride in. And so this is a kind of a blow to Ilhan Omar and she's been fighting hard against it now for a several days it looked like this might not happen. In other words, it looked like Kevin McCarthy had the votes to boot swalwell to boot Adam Schiff, but not to boot Ilhan Omar for a couple of reasons. One is that there is one Republican who thought that Elon Omar was doing a pretty good job on the committee. There was another Ken buck who's been on this podcast and Ken buck, I think, was taking the principled view that, hey, listen, just because the Democrats threw Republicans off their committees doesn't mean that we, the Republicans should throw the Democrats off their committees, Ken buck, I think, was joining the, let's call it we're better than they are school of politics. We should sort of show them by example that this is the right way to do things. And then Nancy mace, she's the one I think who was opposed to removing Ilhan Omar. But Kevin McCarthy basically did what good leaders do, which is he started pulling these people into a back room and having a little bit of a talk with them. And out of the three, he convinced two to swap their vote. So Ken buck now and a Victoria spartz have agreed to vote to remove Ilhan Omar, they insisted upon a provision that she gets a chance to quote appeal her removal, which is kind of a worthless thing to do because that appeal is not going to very likely succeed. And so Ilhan Omar is going to be out of there.

Will Rep. Mike Gallagher Devote a Hearing to TikTok?

"Was possible to hold a hearing with your democratic colleagues, will you devote a hearing just a TikTok because it seems to me that when very responsible teachers are not aware of the threat bows by TikTok, then lots of Americans aren't or they're churning it out or they're saying, what's the big deal I'm on Twitter a lot. And it's just so completely different. Will you be devoting a hearing to TikTok? I think we will. One thing to flag. Kathy McMorris Rogers on the energy and commerce committee is actually going to have TikTok CEO before her committee. Basically, any legislation on TikTok. So I have the bipartisan bill to ban TikTok. It's referred to the house foreign affairs committee, but energy and commerce also has a piece of this jurisdiction. So we just need to make sure that E and C and foreign affairs and the select committee on China are all on the same page in terms of both hearing oversight as well as moving forward on legislation. And so one option would be for us to partner with the NC and with foreign affairs on a joint hearing or after they do their hearing or around the same time. One thing I've been thinking through is we can have a hearing devoted to TikTok, but teased out some of these bigger issues at play, right? So for example, in my opinion, it's not just enough to ban TikTok or force a sale. You also need to have a bigger proactive strategy for how we share data across borders with free world countries that we actually trust. Shinzo Abe gave a great speech before he was killed, where he laid out this model of data free flow with trust. So I think we can do two things. Identify and expose the threat posed by TikTok or really any app controlled by a hostile foreign power. While at the same time laying out a strategy for cross border data flows throughout the free world that actually makes sense.

Biden, McCarthy to discuss debt limit in talks on Wednesday

"House speaker Kevin McCarthy says he's not ruling out cuts to the Defense Department, as he prepares to meet this Wednesday with President Biden a negotiating an increase in the nation's debt ceiling. The newly elected Republican House speaker says along with a reasonable discussion on raising the debt limit to avert a government default. He also wants to speak with President Biden about potential spending cuts. McCarthy promised conservatives. He would even consider Defense Department reductions, which the chairman of the House foreign affairs committee, Texas Republican Michael McCall, says would be a big mistake, given the tensions with Russia and China. I will not sit back and watch our defense being cut at such a dangerous time in our history. Democratic congressman Adam Smith says the debt ceiling must be raised because the money's already spent. The Republicans don't want to raise the debt ceiling without cutting spending, obviously they don't want to raise revenue, put a plan on the table. What are you going to cut? Boats spoke on Fox News Sunday. Speaker McCarthy vows social security and Medicare will not be touched, although Democrats remain skeptical. I'm Jackie Quinn.

"Speaking of Washington says we could soon see a war between the U.S. and China. Let's go to the newsroom now and Bloomberg said Denise. This is the word from four star general Michael minahan, telling his officers to prepare for this and representative Michael McCall Republican from Texas chairman of the House foreign affairs committee as well tells Fox News Sunday. He agrees with the general. It could happen. I think as long as Biden is in office, projecting weakness as he did with Afghanistan that led to Putin invading Ukraine that the odds are very high, we could see a conflict with China and Taiwan and the indo Pacific. This goes back to my father's war, World War II. And McCullough also says he doesn't want it to be true, but Bloomberg's senior Asia editor Bill fairy says Taiwan would not actually be that easily beaten. It would be a horrible conflict for all sides and the global economy, but there have been some more gaming done, some more game done in the U.S. that suggests that Taiwan would actually get through this conflict. Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholes warning of an arms race says he's ready to talk to Vladimir Putin about ending the war with Ukraine but former defense secretary Robert Gates says support for Ukraine is holding up as we approach the one year mark and he says Putin will not back down. "Had the intel one political coalition would possibly be pressuring him to do something. I'll do it. Well look. I mean i think i think the farthest left wing of their party to. Why are you talking louis. Those people absolutely. He's listening to absolutely but look you know. There are some extreme isolationists in all quarters of the american political landscape. That i think are naive. You gotta rand paul type. He's for pulling out of everything right. But i think there's a i think there's a diversity of opinion on this issue but i think where where there's a consensus across the board is whether you're for maintaining a residual security force as i and as i was and we're yoko in which. I urged the which i urge to skit in which i urged the administration to to follow or i'm trying to for complete withdrawal. The point is this was. This was a disorderly disorganized and precipitous exit. That did not follow the conditions on the ground. So i don't understand how they were that stupid or it almost looks like they planned to make it be a complete chaos coming out. How would you not know that if all your people i don't care if you're in the squad territory over with ao see and rashida leib or you're on some conservative guy. That's right to right around ball saying we shouldn't be and all these places. You still would plan it better than to have left it to just be a malay when you come out. How on earth where. Where's the the gap are we dealing with somebody the so cognitively tivoli impair. This goes to the question of the stability of the leadership that you would think you could do this. It would be all right so look if you look at what. The president did yesterday in his his statement and then he retreated back to his vacation. He blamed everyone. he said. The buck stops with him but then blamed everyone. He blamed president trump. He blamed the afghans Our allies who fought bravely beside us for the last twenty years He he blamed the intelligence community but the truth is the an and said it was an intelligence failure and and his own his own national security team right now is saying that nobody could have anticipated that that that is false. That's a lie. That's a lie because they were getting the same intelligence briefings that we were. I know they were and even the democrats on the house foreign affairs committee when we were getting these intelligence briefings. They were asking questions. Not not about whether kabul would fall but after kabul fall. What were the contingency plans that the administration had for the women and girls. The democrats were getting the same Intel that we were congressional democrats. I know that the president was getting these briefings. I know his national security team was getting these briefings and that's why we need to hold these people accountable and why i called on their resignation because they knew this was going to happen and they did nothing they were. They prioritize meeting politically motivated. Date-certain of september eleventh which is the worst of three hundred sixty five possible dates. You could choose from. And his and now the the ultimate irony because the catastrophe that has ensued because we have over fifteen thousand american citizens trapped because our afghan friends who are trapped. There are facing a slaughter and because we've left behind material helicopters Small arms firearms All kinds of weapons systems artillery. That has now fallen in the hands of our of our our adversaries the taliban because of because of all of this.

"I wanna see that meltdown. Impressive but absent three in the morning when you're naked again running down the stairs. That's not gonna be embarrassing enough witnesses to make a bunch of republicans have come out. And they're about to release their report on where they believe the covert nineteen pandemic started. And of course day believe it leaked from the chinese research facility. The wuhan institute of veracity again. This is the lab leak theory. The top republican on the house foreign affairs committee is representative. Mike mccall who says that we believe it's time to dismiss the wet market theory as the source and that's the source that the animal virus likely transmitted to humans at that seafood market. We believe that for that must've been after the outbreak that that's probably how it started. Of course china denies this. We may never know the truth. That's the problem with this. The us intelligence agencies are supposed to submit their own completed report within the next few weeks but the republicans have decided that there are some information that they have gotten a hold of which tells them that. It's very likely was a lab week. They say there are new and underreported information about safety protocols at the lab there was a request in july of twenty nineteen for one and a half million dollars. Overhaul a hazardous waste treatment system which was less than two years old so they thought that that was kind of significant that they're looking for that they also said that there was the labs genetic sequencing database was taken off line in the middle of the night showing. They were trying to hide. Something and satellite imagery from around that time shows increased activity at the hospitals near the wuhan lab the time now being cited by these republicans on this house foreign affairs committee is as early as september of twenty nineteen. I mean there were reports that this could have started moving around in november and by december. I think we were talking about it here on the air but now something that may go back to september of two thousand nineteen. So we've talked about this before. Apparently there were reports that there were some people that had to be taken to the hospital. Worked at the lab Chinese basically voted off as just colds and flu. And you never mind. You had nothing to do with any work that we're doing here but of course the big problem is here if they're doing this at this lab which is called gain of function research and they're looking to make these viruses more transmittable and more deadly. Yeah we do need to know about that because that could impact a lot of us. Meanwhile on the caution and people are starting to buzz about president former president obama sixtieth birthday party. It's supposed to be coming up this weekend. At martha's vineyard reports are that he wants five hundred guests there but according to the information that a lot of the media's been able to get it says that they are going to well. "You know, Teddy Roosevelt tried to start the moments party it didn't succeed. Usually third parties just help the opponent's people get elected. Bill Clinton. Was elected, in part because the third party was formed. Ralph Nader helped elect George W. Bush, so I don't think that we're going to see a third party being formed again back to Washington that The other day, I think of our mutual friend Crazy's good friend of mine, Jerry Nadler. When the suggestion was made in Congress that we should open congressional sessions between Pledge of Allegiance, Jerry shot it down. What is going on in America? Is it when I was a kid? When I was a kid? We had a big debate because they added the words under God to the Pledge of Allegiance and We were used to saying, you know, one nation invisible. Then they added one nation under God indivisible, and that was a big argument, and some people refuse to say the under God saying that violates the First Amendment, separation of church and state. How could anybody refuse to pledge allegiance to the United States of America? It's country loved. It's the country In my case with my family that saved us from, you know, death in Europe on my Love America and I moved closer to pledge Allegiance and act. Patriotic Lee toward a country I love. I do the same thing. Did. The Democrats took a congresswoman Green and threw her off all the committees, and that's the first time it's ever done. What I am. Yeah. You know, it raises some constitutional questions about whether or not Congress can act as Congress against somebody for making terrible statements, outrageous statements, some of them just horrible denying the school shootings. Things of that kind but completely protected by the First Amendment. And then the next question is when the Republicans gain control of the house are vegan to they're going to take you Lan O'Mara, who's made miserable anti Semitic, horrible statements about advantage over the world. Yeah, through the through there through there. Benjamin's and how Israel's hypnotize the world to disguise their evil. The difference we green unwanted. O'Mara's green has been repudiated by most Republicans, whereas a lot on there has not been repudiated, and she still serves. On the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The committee that has jurisdiction over American relations with Israel has on it. A woman who says that you know, his real as hypnotize the world and the Jews of Benjamins are the ones that know control. So you know what's good for the goose? And so I think we're going to see The Republicans take over in two years. I think yuan O'Mara will be taking all apart committees in retaliation. What have you been able to listen to top secret stuff that involves Iran, and she may be report that Yeah. Look, I have no brief for green. I wish she hadn't made those statements in stages are despicable. Um, you know, saying that Clinton killed John Kennedy and that you know, the school Children weren't really killed and And that you know, there was a body double for loose bait against. It's absurd, terrible, stupid stuff. The Republican should have gotten rid of her themselves. But the Democrats, I don't think I have any right to change years and years of practice. Which allow one parties to decide who serves as minority members of the committee. So you know all the rules of being broken now, and we're getting more and more divided and nothing's happening to bring us together right now. You got a minute left. What else would you like to tell the American people? Well, you know we're great people and with much better when we united and were divided and I'm hoping we can put the past behind us and you know, there's so many things we can do together We can consult the virus. We can help the economy. We can help promote racial and other equality. We have to work together. We need leaders to bring us together. And I thought Joe Biden would do that. I wish he hadn't supported the impeachment and removal trial because I think it doesn't help anybody. It certainly doesn't help the Biden administration that doesn't help him. "You're listening to America, first with Dr G. We are back. It is that time of the week where we catch up with the Baron, my former White House colleague, former strategic advisor to the Trump 2020 campaign. Follow him right now. Boris BP also Boris underscore Epstein on Instagram. Things are happening inside the GOP baron. That kind of smack of old school. Disturbing weakness. We're seeing these. These attacks on new freshmen. A Congress, women vote bit and green. We see some people you know who surprised me signing on to some kind of action against them. Removal from committee or what have you let me ask you the big picture question. We've been witnessing right now. Just two weeks after the inauguration, the old GOP trying to snap back like a rubber band. Have they not understood that Magarri is alive and Donald Trump. He may not be in the White House, but he's still the most popular single political figure out connected to the GOP in every single way. Let's not forget President Trump received 75 million votes about 75 million votes in 2020 63 million and 2016 unbelievable huge growth off the trump movement, so that is very vital to remember. Here's what's happening and again for media matters. Anybody watching I fully Denounce all hate. I'm 100% Jewish. I'm 100% against anti Semitism. There's no room for it. Full Stop. I have dealt with Congressman Marjorie. Tell Green. I do. I've never Felt a smack about that summit is not an ultimate, That's something, she said. Some controversial things in the past on does have no place full stop. She can't By the way she came on this show yesterday, and I gave an opportunity to distance itself from those comments, and she did. He did or Congressman Bob, but I have not really understood with the big issues. She seems that as she seems to be to be a congressman whose representative off hard constituency and big believer in the Second Amendment, which Oh, my goodness. Here's a shocker is the second Amendment of our Constitution? So, But here's what's worrying me. What's worrying me is that Republicans are not acting a stuff is Democrats. We are the Republicans are not some Republicans, and I'm curious who you're surprised that you don't want to share its okay. But I don't talk out of hand because I just saw somebody's tweet early this morning, and I think I saw If I get this wrong apologies, but they're friends of the show. So you know, I saw Biggs on I saw Babin sign onto some measure the Democrats were bringing in that surprises me. I would be surprised about two of them. We could check in which Democrats don't do this right. When a lot of Mar went out there and said terrible anti Semitic things, it's all about the Benjamins. Israel has improved as the world they passed some soup down water down nothing resolution, and she's on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which which oversees our relationship with the state of Israel, among others, were she didn't like it says anti Semitic things. She's a leader and in the Democrat wing of the of the House, Alexander Acosta Cortez's thousands BDs. Work out the best sanction an anti Semitic movement. She's leader of the of the far left movement in Congress. Jim Clyburn minimizes the Holocaust. He's another statesman. So Democrats circle the wagons. They protect their own. But then they attack Republicans. But Republicans failed to circle the wagons. We need to be a stuff is Democrats. What a lot of I'm gonna take. Well, what is that going to take? We do not circle the wagons. Is that just a lack of leadership? What is it? Is it the culture of the swamp? It's a bit of culture. I think I called the country Club Republicans. You know it. It is not Madame Magda is spine Maga as strength, But more than old school country Club Republicans is all. Well, you know, we need to make sure we're not attacked on the Sunday shows. No one cares. No one cares that stuff for a second. I mean this so it takes me back. This so takes me back to the beginning of the Trump administration. Where there were people in the building with us like you and me. Political appointees senior rank. Who just wanted the approval of the mainstream media. They go if the Washington Post said something bad about them, that was the end of the world, Barry's do they don't understand who the mainstream media is and how they did test the average American on actually are anti American in their attitudes. How is that possible? The ivory the every tree is tall, and it's big. That's the problem that and and Republicans need to realize that the Democrats are a base movement, and now we have. Republicans also need to be a base. Movement. We need to be strong when you to stand up for what we believe in which is America. First Constitution. First our allies first being against the world, mom, and you know what? Fine. You don't like something that Marge each other, Green said. In the past, you're in America. You're absolutely title. To that say it's wrong and you know you want it. You want to pass something that says, Oh, that was we disagree with those statements. Sure, And by the way, I was in favor of taking Steve Congressman King off the committee's when that happened because he said those terrible things about white nationals while he was a sitting congressman. Don't you tell a green didn't say anything, but she was a sitting congresswoman that now they're going after her, for this is all beforehand. So I urge our Republican team are Republican movement to be strong. There's a lot of things you could say about Nancy Pelosi. You could say Sunday morning. Good morning, You could see that She is completely out of step with America. The fact that she broke the rules that she was espousing yourself around Colbert, and she's completely out of touch with every day, man. Guts, But you have to admit that she's tough. She's strong. She's made it through a lot of battles and she doesn't back down. We have to be that strong and that goes to the Sham of an impeachment trial. We've got a minute left. What do you reckon Applications for next week's sham impeachment trial. It will not be conviction. We now know that because of the 55 45 votes it was against this missile. But again, they could not get to the 67 need that would be needed for conventions of 45. Republican senators voted to dismiss this so now that they obviously cannot go on flippant sale conviction, there will not be a conviction. I think the Democrats based on what they put out their filing yesterday, going to put on this Emotional again charade often of an attack, and then I think President Trump's lawyers are going to push back. If my advice we push back hard on three vectors that this trial is unconstitutional, there was absolutely no in second, the president said. March peacefully, unpatriotically and that Talking about election fraud. Voter fraud is constitutional, and it's correct. We want election integrity in this country. It is not a big lie, which is a term coined by the Nazis that the Democrats are trying to use against us and the Republican movement. The maggot movements..

Trump Got Written Briefing in February on Possible Russian Bounties, Officials Say

"Is going to the White House today. They will be briefed on reports that Russia offered to pay Taliban linked fighters in Afghanistan to kill U. S troops. The lawmakers want to know who in the White House knew what And when. The New York Times now reports that President Trump got a written briefing about this in late February. There are various reports we should note about when the president was told, but the White House said As thie information never reached him. NPR congressional reporter Claudia Great Solace is on the line. Good morning, Claudia. Good morning knew. Well, what will happen in this meeting today? This will be led by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. The White House says they requested this meeting with Democrats and Democrats in turn, so they have a lot of questions. The group. Joining Hoyer Thiss meeting includes the chairs and members of several congressional committees with jurisdiction over this matter, and they're looking for answers. For example, I talked to representative Ruben Gallego of Arizona. He's a combat veteran, and he's not buying the administration's argument that they didn't share this information sooner because they're still trying to prove it out. And the story continues to evolve. In a new statement, the National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien said intelligence officials continue to investigate and could prepare a response over time. Okay, so Democrats go into the White House today. Interestingly, the White House briefed some Republicans yesterday. What happened in that meeting. So several of these members who attended this meeting afterwards echo the White House's narrative that the Intel community is conflicted on what actually happened and that they didn't necessarily think that Trump needed to be briefed yet, But they also expressed concern If the reports turn out to be true, I spoke to representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois. He's also a combat better and let's take a listen. I think as we get more answers, then we'll know what the response needs to be. But I don't think this is built up to be any kind of internal scandal. But it is definitely a concern by way of. You know what roller is Russia playing in Afghanistan? NPR also spoke with representative Michael McCaul, another member who attended the meeting. He's a top Republican for the House Foreign Affairs Committee. And he said these allegations are very serious. And if true, he thinks the U. S needs to take swift and severe action against Russia. Of these meetings leave most of Congress still to be briefed on the matter, and congressional leaders such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others say these briefings fall woefully short of what's demanded here. NPR congressional reporter Cloudy gray solace. Thank you, Claudia. Thanks for having me.

White House says Trump was not briefed on Russian bounty intelligence

"Okay, so, what did President Trump? No, and what should he have known about allegations that? Russia offered bounties to kill US troops in Afghanistan House. Democrats are going to the White House to ask today the New York. Times first reported on the bounties. The Times said intelligence about the Russian offers. A payment made it into president trump's daily brief months ago now the presidential daily brief is. Is almost like a classified newspaper for one very important reader NPR another reported over the years that this president does not usually read it. Despite various news reports about when the president was told, the White House said the information did not reach him NPR congressional reporter cloudy Gra has been following this one. Hey, Claudia, hi, there! What's going to happen at today's meeting at the White House? This will be led by House majority leader. Steny hoyer the white. House says they requested this meeting with Democrats and Democrats. Interns say they have a lot of questions related to these intelligence reports the group joining Hoyer at this meeting includes the chairs and members of several congressional committees with jurisdiction over this matter that includes House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff. He's raised a series of concerns including if the president. President wasn't briefed to. Was it a result of his relationship with Russian president. Vladimir Putin. I spoke to him yesterday about this. Let's take a listen watch. Concern that there's a unwillingness to confront the president with the evidence of Russia's Melania activity because he doesn't here. And this was a running theme. When it came to most Democrats, I spoke to yesterday. who were headed to the White House today. The White House briefed some congressional Republicans yesterday. Why was there meeting the Republican meeting a day earlier and what happened in that meeting? You know it's unclear why it was organized. This way in terms of just Republicans going in yesterday. However, they quickly followed that meeting. Saying Democrats are invited to. They're just coming tomorrow. Of the Republicans, who did go? They echoed the White House's narrative that the intelligence community is conflicted on what actually happened and they didn't think necessarily the trump should have been briefed, but they also expressed concerns. If the reports turn out to be true, I spoke to representative Adam. King's Inger of Illinois. He's a combat veteran. Let's take a listen. I think as we get more answers Then we'll know what the response needs to be, but I don't think built up to any kind of internal scandal, but it is definitely concerned by way of you know what role. Role is Russia Planning Afghantistan NPR also spoke with Michael McCall another house. Republican, who attended yesterday's meeting? He's the ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and he said these allegations are very serious, and if true, he thinks the US needs to take swift and severe action against Putin and his mercenaries, another Senate member Senator Ben Sasse, said he's been hearing from military families this weekend. They're livid and right to be livid. They're looking for people in the city to be looking out for their kids safety because quote, they're on the frontlines of freedom fighting for us. Are there people who have been left out of today's briefing that surprise you that you would expect to have been invited most definitely. This includes members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. This includes congressional leaders among them House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She's called for the full House to be briefed and she and Hoyer say these briefings at the White House fall short of what's demanded here. They want the director of National Intelligence, the CIA to personally brief all house. Members at the Capitol and the story continues to evolve for example last night. The DNA and C. Director said they'll to investigate, and they'll brief the president and congressional members at the appropriate

Trump denies briefing on bounties against US troops

"I'm Anthony Davis. Donald Trump on Sunday denied that he had been briefed on reported US intelligence that a Russian Military Intelligence Unit secretly offered bounties to taliban-linked militants for killing American troops in Afghanistan and he appeared to minimize the allegations against Moscow. American, intelligence officials concluded months ago that Russian. Officials offered rewards for successful attacks on American service members at a time when the US and Taliban were holding talks to end the long-running war last year. Trump in a Sunday morning tweet, said nobody briefed told me all vice president Mike Pence. Chief of staff, Mark Meadows about the so-called attacks on our troops in Afghanistan Russians everybody is denying it, and they have not been many attacks on us, he said. The White House had issued a statement on Saturday, denying that trump or pens had been briefed on such intelligence despite it being widely reported that the president rarely reads intelligence briefing documents. Trump's tweet came a day off to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Biden said that the report, if accurate was a truly shocking revelation about the commander in chief and his failure to protect US troops in Afghanistan and stand up to Russia. A Taliban spokesman said the militants strongly reject this allegation and did not indebted to the benefit of any intelligence organ. All Foreign Country Representative Michael McColl, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee said in a statement posted to twitter that he had requested additional information from the administration and the such an operation would deepen his concerns about Moscow's actions beyond Russian borders, if

State Department watchdog was investigating arms sales; Pompeo denies retaliation

"The State Department's Inspector General. I thought to be fired for investigating. The Secretary of State for assigning personal tasks to a department staffer also was investigating the approval of arms sale to Saudi Arabia without congressional approval officials from different congressional committees told NBC News. They believe Inspector General. Steve Clinic was fired in part for investigating Saudi arms sales that Congress had previously rejected house foreign affairs. Committee member Eliot Engel of New York. Confirm that investigation by late Monday. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are demanding a more complete explanation for Lennox firing according to the hill. Senator Chuck Grassley Republican of Iowa sent a letter to the president on Monday. Senator Grassley reminded president trump. The law requires detailed explanations for dismissing departmental watchdog to ensure that inspectors. General are not removed for political reasons. President Trump said the claims the secretary of state potentially misuse of government resources are overblown and seeing to consider them acceptable. Even if they are true look he's a high quality person. Mike is very high quality Zuri brilliant guy and now I have you telling me about dog walk in washing dishes and you know what I'd rather have him on the phone with some world leader. Then have him wash dishes because maybe his wife isn't there or his kids are you know. What are you telling me it's terrible. It's so stupid you know stupid. That sounds to the world unbelievable head to wash dishes because his wife wasn't there. The president also confirmed Monday. That secretary of State pompeo requested the dismissal of idealistic but did not directly address the issue of retaliation. President isn't there. At least an appearance of a conflict of interest of secretary. Pompeo is asking you to fire inspector. General's I don't I don't think so. I think maybe he thinks he's being treated unfairly again. He wanted to. He asked me if that would be possible. I said I'll do that. Your I think it should have been done a long time ago. Frankly and this is a man that has had some controversy. This inspector general but So again I don't know anything. I haven't even read much about him. I see that it's a little bit of a story not much of a story. 'cause everybody agrees that. I have the absolute right to fire. The Inspector General's secretary pay later dismissed the idea that his requests for the firing was in retaliation for links investigations into arms deals. And those errands saying quote. Because I simply don't know I'm not briefed on it. I usually see these investigations and final draft form. Twenty four hours forty eight hours before the is prepared to release them. So it's simply not possible for this to be an act of retaliation end of story says Secretary Pompeo the State Department's under-secretary for management told the Post that concern over linen had grown because of a quote pattern of unauthorized disclosures. Leaks to the news media about investigations. That were an early draft form. He added officials had no evidence. Linac was personally responsible for the leak so Casey Hud. There's a lot to unpack there. Let's go back to the arm sale though this was a year ago in. May when the president and secretary pompeo declared an emergency bypassing congress to sell about eight billion dollars worth of arms to Saudi Arabia and the UAE and it drew condemnation by the way from Republicans not just from Democrats but there was bipartisan. Condemnation of this move and now it appears that inspector general was looking into that declaration of emergency. Yes that's what. Nbc News learned late yesterday when Chairman Angle confirmed that this investigation was going on that they were angry that essentially he had the president and Pompeo tried to circumvent Congress on this arm sales question this was something that there are a lot of. Republicans as you point out who are very invested in what was going on in that particular situation. And who opposed this move by the administration but let's not forget to put the firing of this inspector general in to kind of the broader context in pattern that we're seeing going on here. This is not the first time something like this has happened and the administration has already ignored the rules that they are supposed to follow when something like this happens in the case of Michael Atkinson in the intelligence community by not explaining to Congress within thirty days why they did it and so I think there's a question here as to whether the administration will do it in the case of the State Department. This has been something that has drawn as you pointed out. Bipartisan condemnation chuck. Grassley though senator from Iowa has been particularly focused on this but the reality is Congress's relatively toothless in this regard they can make these demands asking for more information but the laws are not necessarily written in a position. That's strong enough to let them make a real difference here. And what we're left with is kind of a government that is increasingly. Not being held accountable. Now how that lines up with the president's campaign promise to drain the swamp I will let our viewers decide but they seem to be at odds. Donald Trump talked about how incredibly stupid thing sounded at his press conference. And I agree Casey. I want you to listen to this clip. One more time and let's focus on the part where Donald Trump says that he doesn't want Mike Palm. Oh doing dishes if his wife isn't there take a look. Look he's a high quality person. Mike is a very high quality his brilliant guy and now I have you tell me about dog walking washing dishes and you know what I'd rather have him on the phone with some world leader than have him wash dishes because maybe his wife isn't there or his kids are you know. What are you telling me it's terrible. It's so stupid stupid. That sounds to the world. Unbelievable quoting the president of the United States to you know Mr President how stupid that sounds to the world that in twenty twenty you say he needs State Department officials to washes dishes in case his wife. Isn't there
