Travel to Saudi Arabia

"Welcome to the amateur traveler. I'm your host Chris Christianson. Let's talk about Saudi Arabia. I'd like to welcome to the show flow meter. Who's come to us from Munich Germany but come to talk to us about Saudi Arabia flow? Welcome to the show. Thank you Chris. Happy to be here. Saudi Arabia is not a place that well actually. It's a place that a lot of people have gone on Hosh. It's one of the most popular travel destinations in the world but for people who are not Muslims. It is a relatively new destination very true yet. Open up its tourist visa in the end of September so everything is very new. There and for me was the interesting part of really yet. Go to a country where tourism really hasn't been a part of the history in the last year. I guess that answers the question of why you went to Saudi Arabia. Was there more to the story than just it opened up. The opportunity was available. I mean Saudi Arabia. There's so much so much to talk about. I mean first of all landscape. I think we always think about at least to me. It was okay. Saudi Arabia desert oil encampments. That's the first words that came to remind but the landscape boys. There is so much more to see. I mean the Sea of the mountains zero than history wise. I mean a lot of ancient kingdoms coming from there the history of Islam being from there but for me it was one of the biggest reasons why a went to Saudi. Arabia was the hospitality of the people. I heard such amazing things about that. I've been around in the Middle East and I wanted to experience it for myself and as soon as I heard. They opened up the doors for tourists. I said okay. I'm going to jump on that wagon and I want to see for myself to really see how it is. And what kind of an itinerary? Are you going to recommend for us when you look at the map? Saudi Arabia is a huge country. So I always say it's better to have more time than less. But if you have about eight to ten days that should give you a good idea overview over the country so I did it. I'd recommend always starting in Ria. That's the capital on the east side. And then making your way for the West stow after that a Lula which is a beautiful beautiful historic site than to Medina which is super interesting because Muslims go there as well now and then to Jeddah and then from Jeddah head back to Fly Back from Jeddah which options whatever works best for you excellent before we get into that in more detail one place. You didn't name and I WANNA talk about why you didn't name. It is a place that other people might be interested in going. And that's Mecca and there's a reason why you didn't name Mecca and we OUGHTA address the elephant in the room as it were so if he would want to go to Mecca. I'll give you the picture you'll drive on the road and then you see a big sign which says non Muslims go right and Muslims go straight celebrate as a non Muslim. You're not allowed to go to Mecca. And that of course has to be respected now of course if you are Muslim than that's entirely different and you in fact are encouraged or required depending on how one looks at that to make a trip to Mecca at least once in your life if you have the means to do so. So but we're not gonNA address Mecca in this particular episode. We're not going to address going on Hajj because most of the show can't do that so excellent you started us in Riyadh exactly so the beauty of Saudi Arabia is that everything is pretty new so I mean arriving day you arrive at a Super Bowl Airport. I first of all said okay. I'm GonNa take the metro into town so followed the metro signs only to find out that not. That's not billed yet. So that's how earlier wasn't the country so back out of the airport into Uber and into town. We think we always have this idea that Saudi Arabia is a very rich country but maybe a bit old school. That definitely didn't find that the case Uber which works fantastic they have all the amenities modern buildings amazing and paired with all the history that comes with it and there was amazing for me on firsthand arrived in the country. I get into Uber. You drive into town takes about forty five minutes because traffic is crazy and we start talking and suddenly he stops and he gets out of the car and he comes back into the car with a box of oranges. And I'm super perplexingly. Okay what would you know? He's giving me this box of oranges and I was like okay. Maybe we did the picked it up for his wife or his family and he's like no no no. This is for you and this was the first time really experienced hands on Saudi hospitality. Which is insane. I mean I've been to a lot of places but never ever did uber. Taxi driver gave me a present for just arriving in the country. And that would be a new one for me as well. It's really insane. And this was not a one time I arrived in is expensive. There's a lot of hotels but they are quite expensive when expensive sixty seventy USD. For I would say the the cheapest room.

"It's just it's instilled in our DNA whether or not you like it you're watching the hockey postseason like you're watching you don't watch the regular season. 'cause I mean who really cares about that too, many games and whatever, but you're watching the postseason. It's just been insane. It's some of the things I've seen never thought. I'd see again in for me. I'm I'm really bitter with the way hockey's been going because when I was growing up. It was all about the league goaltending where it'd be like one nothing games. He's. Whoever's standing on his head. That's you gotta bed. That is true. I just miss those days where you always the under the under was five and a half. And you just it was a luck any game where you had Brodeur anytime. He had Hosh egg you Patrick while you just take the under in your cashing. But this year in the in the postseason, I need. It's just who knows. It's just who knows as far as if I were to take a wager on anyone right now, who's looked great. I really don't know. I could to be honest. I think Boston was the most likely winner. They've had a lot of trouble. They won big today. But Columbus is looking hanging in there. So. The Friday games. Sean. I mean, I I'll I'll help I'll Mogi Mooney guy with a pick. Because I would say, you know, we'd love the great people of the midwest here on the sports Hanley podcast. And we, and you know, we also love hating Boston. And no one wants Boston to get the whatever they're calling fucking wheel era. We won every championship the go. Let's hey, let's all collectively root for Columbus. Was that they were already talking about that. When Boston was just up the Celtics were up one nothing. They're already like it's in the bucks. We'll winning it all every sport. We had to raise we have like one Suzanna raid there. So listen, if there's one thing we can all agree on is. But we don't need any more. Blake. Boston doesn't need to get any more of an ego. They had an ego when they suck. Yeah. That was the problem, and then we never should have given them money. And then they got they actually had success came drunk with power, and they are already drunk with power off power of, you know, whatever city pride in being literally really drunk. So the Friday games, you're any anything here. Islanders hurricanes stars blues. Anything jump at it, you total side, whatever. Linder is I can't believe that they're down three nothing in that series. They were favorites to win that they just looked. They have not looks good at all. I really I mean to say that the her Caroline hurricanes are gonna pull off the sweep would be ridiculous. But the way that this year's postseasons going on there have to think that they're gonna pull off the sweep they just looked so good this entire series. They look so good at home. So I think that they'll win and for the stars blues. I think I'm not exactly sure what odds they are. But I'm very sure that the stars are gonna be underdogs not one. I think a good shot..

"And I I went through I was just in such a a may my sisters. My best friend and familiar, not go to her wedding. She okay with it or she will. She felt like, you know, it was they plan that wedding super-quick. And she was like, okay. I get it. Yes. She was just like, oh, you're your university. So you can't miss. I had some like practical classes that I couldn't I would have had to retake the next semester. So I really, but I think that if I had a folk good about myself. It would have been like hell, yeah. I'm gonna retake those I wanna be my sister's wedding. But I was so grateful to have an excuse. Yeah. And it really I just remember my twenty four I was the happiest that I had made in such a long time maybe the happiest I've ever been because I fully accepted myself. I knew who I was. So what was a journey that you had to go through? What would you tell other people say someone who is in the depths of hell right now with the cycle. What? How would you tell them to get out of it? Like what were your steps? I think the first thing is making that decision like accepting. I am in a bad place. Yes. Yes. And being able to actually 'cause I think I kind of denied that for a while. And I was like, oh, no. This is just maybe this is just my body tie. Maybe like, no nuts. Bad about yourself. Yeah. Of coal. And that's the thing. No matter what size. You are. It's really mentally. Do you feel bad about your exactly, and you can be curvy whatever? But. If you have rate, then I told him out, that's all that matters. And I felt shit about. I looked in the mirror, and I was like who is that. That is not me. And I would look at is. That's like I don't even recognize that person. And I didn't recognize my self confidence. And I had a terrible relationship with my sister lives in a story. Oh, I and a lot of it was, you know, I think a lot of things stem from the relationships in your life, and certainly the relationship I was in wishy like more heart on you or dislike? No. But I disagreed with a lot of the decision. She was making. And it's funny because I thought she was making all the wrong decisions like getting married quickly and falling in love quickly. And I was like right behind her. Yeah. But I at the time was like, no, you have to date someone for at least four or five years and full relationship where you didn't have clarity for many years. Yeah. And then you meet the one, and you're like, I don't need a date for four to five years. Oh. I knew all three of you sisters, married so fast. And I made I cannot even say the men that were married to. In like, I look sometimes my parents on my gosh, they must be so happy with this summit laws because I'm like not one of them is about like often like the one that no one likes. I mean, my sister and her husband. Josh is incredible. Were you able to come around with her and be like, I get decision when I met Randy. He like opened my hot to found it's out so cheesy, but I feel like when I met him I found this pot of my heart that I didn't know existed. 'cause I was quite when I was unhappy. I was quite closed off. And I was very harsh. And I I was Hosh on myself, and I couldn't accept myself alum myself. So how could I accept a love anyone else? So yeah, my SIS my relationship with my system completely chain not probably able to see her husband for the wonderful man that he had. I mean, I couldn't stand him. And I was so mean to whom the L. Oh, my gosh ties with my sister met her husband, and I was like skeptical young all these problems with self love not your same story..

"Yes. Now with celebrate that but vice versa as this. Similarly, they think America should also thank you to China since the last. A ninety into eight China did not use the gab do not use Knechtel Hosh way to try to take throw America's the number one position. Do something else bad badly, the China take responsibility as a hoot friend of good partner, responsible partner to America. So now, I don't talk about this. Americans may they might feel nervous. Hey, China's also complain about us, right? So professor Burke of what's your observation evaluation about the general status of the world economy? People are still worry about another downturn is coming. For something say about China. Today's maybe not very happy that the help in the financial crisis United States on the other hand, Germany was happy to have open markets in China upon because our industry needed them. And so the good thing you do sometimes pay maybe somewhere else, then you might be back. But I think the more positive view in Germany of China also is YouTube situation, but because we know that our economy, well, well, very happy to have this chance that something I wanna say globally. Well, I think this ability to coordinate and inefficient way will make crisis dangerous for sure. And there several crisis on the mock, there's still the European crisis. Global crisis death Brexit as well. We didn't talk about Brexit backs as immensely dangerous thing happening, and if these Christ's combined to one global crisis, it might get out of control whereas a little bit. A little reduction in growth wouldn't be a bad thing for Germany, for example. We just limit. We don't have the personnel. We don't have the capacity to across about abound. We need we need MO well, educated employees need more of that our market for for sometimes really just empty. So it can't go on like that sometimes called me correct thousand birds. But then we have situations that might get down that dynamic, and if some of these crisis Christ, we don't get real cooperative solution. This might be very dangerous for the whole me maybe more dangerous than two thousand eight because as I said the ability to coordinate and were together is much weaker than it will then. So what's needed here? I mean to encourage a better coordination what kind of reform or I think about how to deliver. Something of Europe hasn't been too bad. And that the pasta years after Brexit decision kingdoms determine them together. And those. More Koreans in their policy. Luckily, United States. Well, you come play global economy like a poker game because the classical western co poco games as always revolve around the table, you know, that even if it's making the deal style of making the deal is maybe not a good thing. It's very can become very costly for China. I mean so much demand of China today because it's developing country one of the largest players so things which are acceptable as Chinese behavior as long as China. All just developing contrary. Okay. Still very small though, grow involve if no longer acceptable ways must have more equal terms, and we must find somehow global agreement with China, how China can be acceptable as one of Brealey leading global powers and the where we must talk about as China. Right. So we still have some time to talk about other economies. Professor hongo. What's your observation about other developing economies and emerging economies imme- mainly? In Latin America this year. Well, the the big question is what's going to happen and Brazil? Brazil's obviously, the biggest economy in Latin America too. So you have a new government that's come in. And and the economic thinking is is been driven by what they call the the new Chicago, boys. The the old Chicago boys where the Chicago university of Chicago free market, economists that word vising Pinochet in Chile in in the seventies and eighties. And and they they completely transformed Chile is is free most solid economy in Latin America almost a not like a lot in American economy. It's very open and free and doing well..

"He's looking older kind of by the day, not not the same guy. He was at twenty five and that's okay. It happens to just about everybody is an expiring contract at this point. But I think you know of all the people who had their moments in this game, I think the person who demonstrated the most value was actually eager Hosh Hasha because this is not a dramatically different. You know, the sons have different personnel, Trevor REEs and Reiner's in, but those are not guys who A-Team. Mm takes their character from like this is still a Devon Booker team to me and their offense looked completely different. This was a much more competent team. I mean, having the base, I mean. I mean, having a three and a four men who are actually gonna make shots is just and obviously, you know, they're replacing the worst coaches in the league with between trio and Watson last year. So. Parsing, but but I agree, it's like Anderson and a resort. You're part of the team. Kokoschka of the hope is we'll be yeah, and they can get other guys who can fill those rules differently, but but Abeille and another element of that, I thought TJ Warren actually taking threes. I mean, I don't think he's gonna go three or four every night. I mean for for, obviously there is judge ex. I mean six out of eight. Areso was five out of nine. I mean, they're nineteen thirty four from three. They're not going to get that obviously every night. I mean those guys, they can get a combined thirty three percent out of those guys this season. That'd be great. Sure. And that boosts up the assess numbers and all that stuff, but but the offense looked from a process standpoint. I thought it looked much better than it has in previous years. And one of the points that I think you and I have both made with Devon Booker over time is that I wanted to see what he can do when he doesn't have to manufacture as much of his offense. And I think that was closer to it. There were certainly moments, especially in that twelve point run where it was a lot of Devon Booker doing doing. Really well. And I also want to note because it's important is another facet of the game that both to me Booker and Aiden were bad defensively. I thought Booker was awful in Aden was bad. I think that's probably a fair way to put it an you can build a very good team. You can even do a great team. If your most talented players are not good defenders and both of those guys, I'm not closing the book on them forever. Anything like that. But the concerns about them defensively were really laid bare in this game. I mean, Devon Booker wasn't given a tough assignment with west bathrooms. It was just straight up, losing him on cuts that didn't really have anything going on. An issue is when the opposing coach is drawing up every after time out play to specifically attack Booker. That's when that's when you know that there's an issue. 'cause the the opposing coach, he's the one who knows especially when that made his recur Lal I mean, but yeah. And what about eating? What so eight. And I think my biggest concern with him is recognition. Because there were plays where he wasn't really doing anything and something came in, which would be a center responsibility Amini whether we're talking a good defensive center like Joel Embiid bear, or we're talking even shaky one. At least those guys generally know what's going on and replace where guys, you know driving towards the basket Aden's not even mixing it up with the Andre Jordan and just never gets over there. It's not like Jordan's walling him off or anything like that. He's just not there and my that lead into one of my big concerns within which is not necessarily that his intentions are bad, but that his instincts aren't good. And those are Harvard a correct because yes, it's true that the accountability has not been there for him. Hillcrest academy. You know, AirAsia ran this weird pack line defense last year. The put him in strange also playing the foot for the most list. Yeah. He was also playing the four one of the times for them, but you kind of it's a lot of it is just kind of that basketball IQ element of it. And there was a lot to like about it in his comfort with his jump shot. You know, he did do some nice..

"Our guest this, week amazing, story his name Marco to. Setup talk a little bit about you on a Sunday. Nights you decided to go out for a run and what do you remember from that? Evening Yeah I had struck, struggled after, losing him it was time. To put it together at trying to figure out what. I could have done right and that was put me into a lot of depression yes And that I, did acknowledge, depression in the culture, that I grew up in prison is not something that's really cut it as something that somebody would need some help. So, I was signed to just brushes over. And say you know I'll get over it but I didn't just didn't just go away as. I. Thought I would just wish it and it would just. Disappear And on November Stick of. Two thousand eleven I just was I don't know how to put it I think I was just overwhelmed and, I, just took some medication and I thought well I can go around because I always use a run a. Formal set of what we might good time my longtime to just get. On with this and I just lucked out I. Think ten minutes Ron and three days later I just am I probably would but. I didn't realize, that I, was in Joan for that long myself I just woke up in the middle of, the night and moon shine was so bright about where. Am I and I tried to get up and my feet at that point was, so, forth and I couldn't even they couldn't support me to just stand up and you know I've been I. Had been laying down for so long that my commission in my Lloyd. Remedies why not even Looney any good to, my feet so but I was in a wooded area but that. Was a good part I, used to use to support myself and walk down I just stumbled onto a trail, that had been Skids was a loomed, so I followed it and, luckily, I went on the right direction and yes stumbled into a hotel, lobby and fast realize I was out, for so long because the Security. Council I don't even know who he wants but I. Remember him saying hey have you been three days And you had no idea I didn't, I just thought I just, was, out for maybe an hour Wow, so you, having really you're in six, inches of snow the temperatures in the, twenties and that was, you know by, three pm on Monday this. Was you went running at seven seven PM on Sunday, but on. Monday they're doing a massive. Surge everybody's looking for you to AM Wednesday morning after fifty five. Hours it's now ten degrees out that's when you're able to get to that to the hotel. Lobby and. When you got to the hospital doctors tell you early on You know I I don't know how I, got to. The hospital the memory I. Have always been lobby in these guys saying you've been out for. Three days and then the next night, just walk up to this Hosh pay me and my hands and I could not handle it Is so painful and I know I could just hear people, talking I could see the men I today. They were trying to get a bringing my temperatures. To install my temperatures and Was that In award, and say I've seen for like three days and the dog to. They did a lot of pits tried to kick my secular by gifting some electrolytes on my system to kick my. Take relation And there was nothing showing on my toes Like my knee down it was, kind of like there was no blood circulation right is dead Yeah it was dead and then the doctor came in and they do you know what we. Have to amputate. Both of your feet because, all the status on your toes. And Dowden angle they're all dead so you're having, a kangaroo and we have. To do that so quick to save your life. In your hands which were also an issue they seem, to? Get better For now the Hannah's looks good but. We don't know. If we will keep the, but for now it looks like. They're doing good we'll skip watching them but for, your feet now we have. Two I'm Peter them now As we can so they amputate six inches below the knee? And, through? Because. Of gangrene and while you're in the hospital. I had you had, any exposure because you've been running a long time, have you watched Oscar Pistorius or any of the. Other guys running in, prosthetics before that no. Really no I had. Not watched that all Yeah? Yeah. But somebody said yeah Oscars book Yes somebody do send me Oscar book and you. Know, that. Was opposite the, kitchen, and I Who is this guy then I started get on YouTube saw him run and one, of, the prostitutes had physically the. The hospitals just few days out. The Miami Titian and say hey we'll, get, you walking down we can work on your running and at that point I'm. Going well Motivational talks this guy doesn't want you to get Saudi, he's, trying to just mix of. What he's trying to say I. Didn't believe he was telling me and What's fascinating is now there's a lot of conversation about hey if somebody's a double amputee they have, an advantage over. A single amputee because you know the double prosthetics as a guy who was? Able bodied runner as somebody who is a. Twenty twenty nine minutes ten k. guy is there an advantage. To running with prosthetics over not having prosthetics There is nothing that beats any, biological part in. Human I even if we have a hundred percent evolution in posses Technologies That would be no time that it will be biological So when people arguing about the advantage that people have when, having put this, is I think that that is yes in my view I think that is just a People who really don't have an experience, it's like you, know this is how I feel I think it's. Just like, somebody who, doesn't use alcohol or maybe Marwan? For that kids and you're trying to ask them how is he how does it feel when you use this explanation. Alone will not make, you know how it feels to be on pussies are not an Right what's fascinating to me is again one of the big. Arguments is that okay A pri- amputate a. Double amputee either below or above knee can make themselves as tall as they want so that means. That. They have a huge advantage over, somebody who's who's running on on shorter legs And they've come, up? With a classification system where, they're a little bit here they they have a scientific formula of some. Sort to figure out how tall someone should, be you're one of the rare people who had legs right you were five foot eleven I think five foot eleven six feet tall before you lost your legs. So when you went through the classification system how tall did they say you have to run it These new classification, they had the previous one that put me on like at my biological. Right using my wingspan Yup and I want, it gets put me on right on the my height New canyon it just put me at five eight. Five. Eight nine five nine so a good solid two to three inches shorter Yes three inches shorter yes. After the break more.
