"They were building to learn the tools and learn how to do gre- in learner do colors and really was about learning the tool in in the beginning. It wasn't about like, the how do I link in my collagen knowledge with creating these the balk ups it was more about how do I make them? And then from there was kind of like, okay, how make them punctual? How do I make sure that guest is visually attractive where the static is great. But how do I also making user friendly to graduate it as time went on? But it definitely started off with. How do I use this tool and how to make things with this? Right. Right. So could we talk about that a bit like what is product design? What is you ex design? What is you? I design what is website, right. There's all these term. There's. All these terms, and there's always job titles. And I know there could be tons of overlaps. And it definitely depends on the company that you're working at what your job title might be. It could be two different things that to companies, but you're sensually doing the same thing. 'cause you just walk us through these different areas of design, and what these different things are definitely. So you're right. The design of industry, I think we need to understand what we call ourselves. All start off like the whole graphic design to everyone was a graphic designer now, it's more into the US you I product design and sometimes information architecture. You X research keeps going, but we're gonna stick to those three the you likes you I in the product. So you X in my opinion is the the how and it basically explains the how the why so how would this work why they working that way? What is the psychology behind this particular design? So that's the US the UI is what does it look like when I get to that screen what visually what vigil designed to see what what colors do I see what vigil hierarchy do. I see how what does it look like? And then the product line is more of the business aspect one. Does the business need in what the user need in? How do I match all those things together? Now, private Ryan can be very tricky. Because it depends on the role that you're in. Geraldo, I work in her Roku, which was acquired by sales worse and Horota's partner, Niner all know how to code. So they're the layer of front end development that you have to know how to do in. It's called you X or UI engineering where you have to understand development because we're working with developers with our platform. So most of our partners on is understand the business me understand the user need, but also understanding that area when no one really focuses on so speed of the website accessability, the website, how to co that it says ability and make sure screen readers could pick up I guess elements on the page and really those areas that no one ever thinks hovers and things like that those are areas of design that most of the time we don't think about as his honors most attended developers about that. "Service in the UK and some private insurance. So money hasn't been a major stressor when we talked her okay was still going to rehab regularly. But working two days a week lucky enough that my job doesn't involve any kind of physical exertion, really. And so I am able to go back. And when I'm in there in that moment, there's no real difference between me now before and Rachel you're not working now. No. So. I was getting through an investment mound with my company. The I was kicking off the week the accident happened. So in an already challenging environment. We didn't raise the money that we needed to in time. And so I sat down the business in December just as he came out of hospital. I thought that was such an interesting clip, and because it shows that she had to totally rethink about who she was as well in in this relationship, and that how important her career had been to her when it was no longer an option for her what that meant for her own identity. You know, a lot of people think it would they would concentrate on his identity identity as well. Yeah. And I actually really appreciate it. The about them as a couple in the way, they have talked about how they have this affected both of them like for Rachel all of a sudden being a full time. Caregiver has been really hard was hard. It was a real change to her identity. It was a real change to the roles in their relationship. Because once rookie came home from the hospital he did need for in the first stages. He needed help with things like being in the bathroom. He needed help with, you know, getting things from from higher up shelves, and all of that seems like a thing that a a wife and a caregiver is expected to do without complaint because she's loving, and that's what you do with your partner. But I love that. Rachel is really quite honest about the ways that that, you know, comes with other sets of feelings like, whoa. What what does this mean for me? And what is my life? Looks like now, and they talked about it together. And also the idea of their identity as a couple not necessarily talking about sex. We'll talk about that in a minute. But this idea that they were this spontaneous couple would just go anywhere and the idea of taking spontaneity out of their relationship because that was part of their identity as a couple how are they handling that? Yeah. I mean in this most recent interview, and I talked to them it had been two years since the accident and. They talked about the simple thing of the they've always been big travelers, and they've sense since the accident they've resumed going on trips. But where they used to be kind of wild spontaneous the kind of people who run through the airport. See how late they can be installed on their plane that was their style. Now, they're the ones who board. I they wait till the entire plane has emptied out, then they have the twenty or so minutes, it takes for her, okay? To get settled to get off the plane and just that change of pace in how they move and travel. It's really changed the way that can be kind of think of themselves and how they move around. They also talked about, you know, they have this huge group of friends in their early thirties who also travelled together, and they talked about a recent trip to Hawaii where they were sitting along the beach on sort of boardwalk, and then all of a sudden a group of the friend said, let's go down to the beach, and let's get into the water and her okay couldn't get down. There was no accessible way to get. Down to the beach. He didn't have a beach wheelchair with him and Rachel having to sort of make the choice of she just gonna kinda stand and not mentioned to the friends. Like, oh now, you're leaving us out because you're making this choice to run into the waves or let them run into the waves and just kind of silently absorbed. This is how their lives are different now. But just those small moments, you can see, you know, it's it's a huge change to both of their identities. Now now being in a marriage where Horota's paralyzed we're talking to Astle host and managing editor of the podcast death sex and money, we're talking about these two episodes. The original episode was called newlywed and paralyzed the foul up which came out last week follows up with his couple about eighteen months later, it's called married paralyzed and moving on. So in part of the moving on part. Let's talk about sex the issue of sex didn't really come up right away. The original episode it something that's more a more of a focus in the follow up. Why is that? Yeah. Well, it was you know, the first episode we talked a lot about like what happened in the immediate aftermath. You know, Hiroki is trying to figure out how you can transfer from a wheelchair to a chair. He's trying to figure out how we can bump up over curbs and a wheelchair learning how to how to maneuver through the world and also trying to see how much strength he can gain back in his new body, and whether any of his spinal cord injury would would would diminish as swelling went down. In this most recent episode now, they know they know exactly where her okay from here on out as far as they understand his his feeling ends about mid rib. Down his body, and that's going to be the situation. And when I asked them about being together, physically one piece of news that they've gotten recently is that they do. In fact, have the ability to conceive biologically, if they choose to Horota's fragility is not been negatively affected. They have to do it with IVF. And so they're they're like many couples who realize they have to go resort to IVF to get pregnant. They're dealing with that and feeling frustrated that it's not just an easy way to get to have sex. They have to get pregnant they have to go through this whole process, and they're also dealing with like the first phase of getting to get of of absorbing the rehab and getting life back in order and trying to reestablish routines. It was all about hitting these milestones of progress. Rachel at one point says, you know, the first year and a half was all progress progress progress, and now it's with physical intimacy where they. I have our confronting. This is what's really different in. This is something that we're not this is not going to change. This is a new reality for us. And it changes the way that they were together before. But I did ask them like if they cuddle and how does change the way they're they're together physically and Rachel talked about before Hiroki was paralysed. She would sort of put her finger in his naval to kind of like all the just going to bother him like and Rocchi said now he will notice that you know, they're cuddling and Rachel's gutter finger on his belly button. He can't feel it. He sees her doing it. And it's still a violation and an annoyance. So there's some things that are the same. But a little less annoying than they were before. I want to play one more little piece of tape. This is actually from Hiroki when he's talking about. How about how he feels about fatherhood? How it's his idea that has changed since the accident. Let's listen, you always picture that you'd have a family and. Pitch a lot before. You know, you have these images of based on your childhood. Of you know, playing we go kid so explore with them. Then there's been things that have helped like when I speak to a friend who's just had a baby. And he's in that will Jaren. I think he said something to me that really stuck with me which was the because like one of the things that really worried me was the I wouldn't be able to be a dads to twelve children. And I remember talking to him by and he he said quote drunk times. I can't remember if I remember correctly. Correct me. But you know, he was saying something along the lines of like, that's you threaten your feelings about how you want to be in a situation you. You. Kids would need. And so I think there's a level of like. Redefining what fatherhood means through different lens. It doesn't mean it's worse. It's just different Anna final question. Why did you wanna go back and check in on this couple? I wanted to hear what you know, so often when you hear stories about traumatic injuries. It's it's someone giving an interview from a hospital bed or at someone who's just gotten home from rehab, and I wanted to hear what life was like for them now that their routines are resumed and they're out of the immediate kind of shock of it and are adjusting to real life. And I wanted to hear what that's been like for them. And and I also have I love the way they talk. They talk about very hard things with incredible humor and with just like unflinching honesty. And so I wanted to hear where they were two years after the accident. You can hear it for yourself at checking out the latest episodes of death, sex and money on your podcast feed or at WNYC dot org. "So my routines the same as it was before. It's just it's it's just without the pot. Why we shed that morning routine together, which which is yeah. The Stott bet their routines with their friends have changed to for the most part they've felt supported, but there are times when it feels painfully obvious that their lives are very different from other young couples like last year when they travelled to Hawaii with a big group, then everyone was hanging out will gather around the pool, and then some almost just like I'm going to go down to the beach, and suddenly the whole crew went down to the beach, and we're like in the sea follow can around and you had to go down steps to get down there. And you couldn't we couldn't because there's no wheelchair. There's no beach wheelchairs, and so we would just stood live stutter. He was next me. But we were just looking offense have an all this fun. And we would just like not able to participate, and it was just it was really difficult, but CNN it's like I didn't wanna go and participate because I didn't wanna leave hierarchy by himself. So I would rather have been there and feel that Sophist together than than to leave him. But was starting to get a bit better while you'll be like a rage. Why don't you go off and do this with these people, and I'll do this with someone else? And so it used to be always that it was on me to stay with Rikio to die. But at she some of our friends are really good and stepping in. So that you're not left by yourself. All that kind of thing. I think it's one of those things that, you know, Stephanie something that in gem, ROY something. I definitely worry about. And and fear is missing out on things OB Neft out because I can't be something. And so, you know, sometimes people invite me to things where it's really that realistic to me to be called it an even though I'm say, no, I still really appreciate the invite. Because at least then it's so I've got a choice in it. So to speak. I still feel like I'm part of even if I'm not there. Mcconnachie think of any of the top of my head 'cause like my friends. I can think of one time those are good people going away, and you wanna buy it will really really sad about. Oh, you mean the stacked? Yeah. Often with him about it was just magnified into this, huge, Dale. And you said it was a stag. Do that's like a that's like a bachelor party. I mean, we went to the wedding. And it was like, you know to the the the thing anyway. And what were the words you had Rachel? Irish just I really wanted to understand whether her he had not been invited because he was in a welter. So I asked and he was like actually she had words with the best, man. And then a hundred with the with the grim. This is. Does it feel comfortable rookie knowing that? Rachel was advocating for you afterwards. Like checking it out. Yeah. No. I didn't mind. I mean, that's that's something. That's not really a change. Rachel was always qualifier you on the, you know, everyone everyone knows that's part of the package that you get with virtual. So. Touch doesn't shy away from conflict. At the time of the accident. Rachel and Hiroki were both running startups in London yahu called them one of London's coolest tech power. Couples Rocchi is the CEO of financial tech company called go card lists the now has hundreds of employees. He started back to work part-time pre soon after the accident. Rachel though had to close her business. She wasn't able to raise investor funds and take care of her. Okay at the same time. So she didn't work for about a year. She found really frustrating. She's now a VP of marketing at another tech company, but she started back at work as a consultant at Horota's business. They worked together for six months. I was reporting kind of Teruyuki. So we'll say light work for your husband. I probably the least ever argued. But it's interesting because I look back on it now, and it was such a powerful time for me to see her Okey back at work..

"For president on our side believed that Brad Kavanagh and Neal Gorsuch were outstanding conservative jurist the other side wants to cancel the election. So Chuck you want somebody new look at this list. And see if there's anybody you agree to what you wanna do Senator Schumer is to overturn the election. You pick the veges, we're not gonna let you pick the judges. If you wanna pig judges, then you need to win the White House when Obama won I voted for. Two judges that he picked so Chuck Schumer name one person on this list you think's acceptable. He called him out. Good for him. Good for him. Okay. Then there's this Senator from Hawaii. She's been getting a lot of airtime. Geraldo. So she's asked on CNN about all these protesters who are. Yeah. It's it's it's violent or bordering on violence. You know, getting in people's faces doc seeing them doing threatening them one one Republican member of congress her his wife got an Email with an attachment of somebody being beheaded. This is over the top. So Horota's asked about this. And she she tries to turn the topic to white supremacism. She tried to turn it around as if it's not just the Republicans that are they're doing this. You know, they're all white supremacist, but she would not answer the question. It's like the violence is it over the top. Does this need to be stopped? Take a listen. I want to ask you about the atmosphere. The president and Republicans what they're saying is that democratic protesters are quote, an angry mob, and what I want to ask you about is. You know, it is one thing to protest at the supreme court to do it at the capital that's done for for generations. And frankly since accounting of this country. It's another thing to run senators out of restaurants, go to their homes is that going too far. I think that it just means that there are a lot of people who are very very much motivated, but what is going on. Because what what happened with just Cavanaugh is from the very beginning. This is not a fair process. Let the Republicans say telegraph after that the Ford's account came forward what they telegraph was one doctor for we don't want to hear from you too. If we have to hear from you. We're going to raise a hearing. So that. Restaurants stock. Well, this is what happens, you know? Th they because when you look at white supremacist, and this is what's coming fourth in our country. There's tremendous divisiveness in our country. But this is the kind of activism that occurs and people make their own decisions. Yeah. She's not saying stop it in a reasonable politician would tell supporters knock this off far. But instead you get Hirono essentially, wink, wink, nod nod, it's ok keep doing your thing. And then Maxine Waters, no, wink, wink, nod nod it's like go out there and do it take a listen. Body.

Live at time on that road adage, you really very heavily police because the police stations right right down in the middle of the road. But it was always a lot faster a lot faster to take that road than jump on the Parkway because if you wanted to go to what was the next street? I can't remember I know Tucker Horota's where it started. But where did what was it? I don't recall myself. I will refer you. If you get a chance and go up online. The New York Post online on Michael good to this past weekend. Yeah. That you wrote an excellent article based on exactly what you're talking about. The fact that Hillary Clinton has never conceded election number one and number two as a very long. This falling. And where it's been since the Trump election some referring to Michael Goodwin. New York Post online. Really, wanted inflammation. And this guy's been doing this for more than thirty years. So he really is one of the best political reporters, you have nationwide, and especially on anything that has to do with elections. And so what he really knows his stuff. I'll definitely check it out. I mean this rich. Thank you, Mark. This whole process was such a. Embarrassing was truly Trillium Barrasso, you have to figure that people from leaders and people from other countries or watching all this stuff, especially on CNN in other countries. And they're and they're shaking their heads. I said we we don't have anything like this. Why is this happening? Why did it take so long breath Cavanaugh should have been confirmed long ago? But then Donald Trump gave in and it should all right. You want another FBI investigation. Do it. Then the Democrats cried out they said, well, it doesn't give them enough skull because it's only limited to this this. And this Donald Trump said, you know, what everything is open everything is home free. Now, they should've investigated or maybe they will. But I doubt it they should have investigated. Christine Ford's story too. To find out if it really happened to her. And again, I said last week I believe something happened to her. But I don't believe was bred Cavallo. And maybe they would have found out that it wasn't true or be they would have found out the real people, and that would have shed even different light on the whole fiasco. But it was odd to me that they didn't interview her, and we know they didn't interview him because he basically said everything, and I guess that's the way they looked at it. Why do we have to interview where she said everything under oath? But the reason is because the process is supposed to work. The process is called the process because it's supposed to work on its own hand hand if somebody gets in front of a Senate subcommittee and lies under oath. That's perjury. And I believe that's perjury at the highest degree because that's on the federal level. It's like lying to the FBI. Lying to the FBI is a federal crime. Some of these people that came forward were just so not credible. Which is why I mean, look at the guy the lawyer for stormy Daniels. Remember that whole thing he put out the statement, and he says my clients credible. And here's an interest went away. That's disappeared. And again, just for things like that. There should be some kind of penalty that these people have to pay for look at all have you imagine? I don't even know where to begin to add up the funds. That we you and I paid for for. Let's talk about security for the sessions for the. We still don't know who flew into sixteen people came with Christine Ford for all the time wasted. And for all the things that did not get done while this these hearings were going on. And then you had for a few days almost a week after that you had people on the Senate floor continuing the debate. While nothing else was going on nothing else. Could go on if that's the main focus. This is the position that that happens all the time. This should be set kind of limits. Something should be. Look if somebody comes forward with some kind of allegation, they should be heard. There's no doubt about it. But I almost think there should be an investigation, and it could have been Dianne Feinstein had these documents back in July. As she turned him in back, then to the FBI the FBI could've done an investigation. Probably even more intense back then and by the time, we got to these meetings. Well, maybe we would have some different answers or we would have the answers quickly that in turn it in because she thought that they could hold this off and one of two things would happen is that either he would be taken as the nomination or they make the stretch out until the midterms happen. And they're so confident that they're going to win in the midterms things would be different. That's what they were hoping for. Let's not get ourselves. Eight seven seven eight fifty eighty five hundred five eight seven seven eight fifty eighty five eighty five imagine this you go to an auction. You've been on the night him. You win the item. Memo imagine watching that item self destruct as in right before your eyes. That's exactly what happened when a painting by the infamous British graffiti, artists banks key went up for auction at Sotheby's in London. This happened on Friday. It was his fame piece called girl with Bologne. It depicts a little girl extending out for heart shaped balloon floating just out of reach went on forbid it sold for one point four million dollars. But just as the hammer came down the paintings canvas began scrolling down through the frame reappearing blow in very neat vertical strips. Yep. It was getting shredded right in front of a room full of people and then banks key posted an image on Instagram of the shredded peace dangling from the bottom of the frame with the title going going gone Shelby's later explained and a shredded was apparently hidden inside the frame, and yes, everyone involved outside of banks was shocked as Alice. Branch dick, head of contemporary European. Art, other noted it appears we just got Penske. Ironically, art experts now believe that the peace will now be worth about four times as much than it was prior to being destroyed four times as much remembered sold for one point four billion now as for the reason why apparently banks she'd put the paper in a frame and set it up to be destroyed if it was ever sold or auctioned. I mean, you know, go figure. It's just amazing and banks. Never nobody knows his identity other than his voice. We know his voice because he's spoken before to reporters with the hoodie on. He's always seen on TV glasses and a hoodie on doesn't want to reveal his identity. Will he ever nobody knows?
