So are we just looking for things that are just going to scare the hell out of people now? Murder Hornets swamp rats You know, I don't know if it were snakes that that that's what that's why draw the line. If we start seeing snakes in the streets, I'm out. I'm out. Yeah, but most snakes are similar, right? Like you don't get giant snake. That's just like an anaconda. I don't know. You know, I grew up when I grew up. The snakes are different. So a rattlesnake in Florida is dramatically different than a rattlesnake here. If you've never seen a picture of a Florida rattlesnake, you'll know why I hate snakes. How are they different? They're like, eight feet long, and they're about as big around as your biceps. Well, my biceps. Thank you for that clarification. No, they're huge. Their heads were as big as your fist. It. Look up a Florida rattlesnake It is. And now you imagine what that rattle. Sounds like when you get near it compared to what you see here in Arizona, and they all scare me. By the way. I hate him in Arizona, too. But imagine creeping up on one of those. I know you're looking in there on the computer. Which one would you rather encounter? A giant Florida snake or a giant swamp Rats? Oh, a swamp rat. I would pet a swamp rat. I have an irrational I haven't irrational fear. Oh, I know it's irrational, but I have an irrational fear of snakes and heights. It's okay to be afraid of one of the other, but it's not okay to pet. If I had to choose between facing one of those snakes or touching a swamp rat, I would touch the swamp rat. Both gross, but they are, but I am I have people have tried to get me over my fear of snakes. I don't want to get over my fear of snakes. I just want to stay away from snakes. The Horned Helm

"Hey welcome to stuff to blow your mind. My name is Robert Lamb and Joe. McCormick and today. We're doing the horned helm. This is going to be one of our essentially one of our invention themed episodes, but I decided. You know we really need to come back to armor, and the best place to start with armor is really the helmet I think the helmet is one of these wonderful things to consider because on the one hand, there is the more sort of combat, centric and medieval. And even fantasy idea of a Hillman Sifi. Fantastic with the concept, but at a very basic level, I feel like we all have some experience wearing a helmet taking this bit of artificial exoskeleton, slipping it over our own skull, and then enjoying its protection. Do you remember the scene in cone heads? Where it? It is revealed that Dan. Ackroyd Cohen Head Bell Dr Enjoys driving a motorcycle, but he's not a fan of helmet laws. No I. Don't remember this. Does he have a? A weird helmet or he just he can't wear human humans. I would imagine that's the source of his frustration. Because seems seems like bell. Dr Is actually normally pretty much rule follower, but but yeah he doesn't like the helmets, and I think it's probably because he has to get one custom made man. I haven't seen that in forever, but I do remember it had a really fun. Stop Motion Monster towards the end. Yes, yes. Bell Dr Scott to fight one with his Gulf skills. It also has a great line that for some reason is is just used for all occasions around our house, which is your phone is too young. Well, you know I. Don't remember if they wore helmets in that at all the more like space centric cone heads, but I feel like there was some sort of a horned crown that one of the more yeah I think. That's right so one of the we're. We're going to be discussing helmets in general, but but one thing that we're also going to discuss. Here is the idea of the horned helm a helmet with horns on it. It's it's an ancient motif in human civilization, and it ties into some earliest ceremonial practices. Practices and models of imaginative thinking. There's also do something so elegant about the idea thing that may be worn upon the head, and in doing so transforms the individual from a mere human into something, symbolically different a hybrid of human embiid. He's channeling the archaic chaotic gods of the Hunt. Oh Yeah I mean it's very therapy. It's what you see in those ancient cave paintings that so exciting when you start to see the human and the animal forms join together, suggesting fantastical thinking it's clearly there in the horned helmet as well. And and and so when you see these ancient motifs, one example that I was looking at before we came in here today. Was Robert Familiar with the the Sutton? Hoo Helmet? Oh, yes, yes, the sudden new helmet I. Had Papa Picture of it, but I this is one of these that I remember from an early age seeing perhaps on the cover of National Geographic, but it was certainly featured in some sort of Historical Book that I had access to his a kid. Yeah, it's just spectacularly creepy with these hollow is the way the mustaches rendered on the the plate of the face covering. I think it also had leather component when it was actually worn, but it's this decorated Anglo. Saxon helmet from I think it was from the seventh century. was buried in this in this ship burial somewhere in east. Anglia and I've actually seen this up close. And there are replicas of it that are really cool, because they reproduce the artwork that would have been originally visible on the sides, and although it's got all these panels over it, basically, it's a helmet covered with like comic strips, and in all the little panels there are scenes depicted in. In one of them shows these figures will like human shaped figures with horns, apparently wearing some kind of horned helmet. Oh, also evidence of Hornet helmets on a helmet. Yes, wonderful, yes, but it doesn't necessarily show the the characters wearing horned helmets say going into battle it appears to have more kind of a ritual religious significance surrounding the horns. Yes, in in this seems to be basically underlying the earliest versions of of this you know horned helmets go back thousands of years as far back as a twelfth century. See we see this in Cyprus Bronze Age Europe. and. The generally the idea is that yeah, this probably has its origins in in against symbolic tinkling thinking and ritual, and the idea that you're transforming. You're becoming something else. Which of course has a role in combat as well in a row and intimidation sort of role in the basic? behavior of making yourself look larger than you are. But, but then there's also this. Imaginative. Side to it there is this ritual aspect of mill, melting, man, and beast,

"I think this is a good segue in a good way to address that quite okay. Okay, so you might find something flying around your garden. Does it look like an S. O.. Is If. I saw that it was. A little bit. This is a pretty big law sprite. This is the best. But. It's a different species. Let's get bigger. Big So if we're looking to describe the described incised to, it's like someone described as a about the size of a lighter almost A. BIC lighter. I won't say it's quite that big, but it's pretty large. No no definitely not. No this one is a worker and workers are smaller. The giants are the Queens and let me show you a queen. Let me make it easier to see. That is. That already looks enormous. Yeah, so that's. If. You saw that flying in your garden, you. You'd know something was up. Yeah, that's. That's what the size of a golf ball not quite. Close? So, the the worker is about maybe one and a half to one and three quarter inches. The Queen is two inches long with a three inch wingspan, so it's quite yeah, it's not the largest Wa- species in the world. There's a Pepsi's Tarantula Hawk loss, which is the largest pieces it is the largest hornets species in the world, but it's not the largest wasp, and we have that largest species loss. Right in Arizona. So she probably saw something quite large with distinct orange, coloring on the head and banded on the third major body segment and so. The to get back to your question of well I mean. Is it that I know less than others about insects? No way because you had. A couple times though. So. Much in Wisconsin. If we're hearing about Burger WASPS think how Washington state residents are hearing about murder wasps, so they're looking out for them. So so these things I guess the real the real danger. Is there any danger to actually humans just getting stung as that any like if someone's are there people that are allergic to giant agent, Asian Hornets definitely so you start with extr, Asian giant Hornets. Start with. The, extreme. So, if I get.

"We're talking about Hornets and we're talking about invasive species, and how Vespas Crab Rio from Europe had invaded decades go, but why vespas mental is in the news right now. Is because it is invaded recent. And what does that mean that means that? Last fall in British Columbia Canada there was a small, maybe a grapefruit sized nest with a colony of these wasps of these Asian giant Hornets. Now. A little bit later in December of two thousand nineteen to worker. Hornets were found in Washington state. The first time they had been found in the United States, but that's actually. Bogans because back in two thousand sixteen. And people all, but ignore this, but in two thousand sixteen, there was a full nest with live larvae live pupae. Found in a package shipped from, Japan. At the border in the United States. And, this is a lucky find because picture yourself as one of these. Patrolling ancients see a federal agent looking through plants and packages, and all kinds of things. How many packages are even check with? Twenty, two thousand cargo ships coming through, you might check. Randomly. Two percent of the packages are so. So, it was really fortunate. One. person. Does that person get like a gold star that day or like a little smiley face on their review or That's a big that that person stopped and invasive species. You can look at number of different ways. Maybe two ways to simplify one is I'm a hero. A bona fide hero is stopped in invasive species from taking over right. Tell everybody! Alternatively. You could look at it and say wow. How many other Wasp's nests are in how many other packages I have not randomly selected? So reading is really limited and stumbled upon one. You're lucky now. The key is it's not all knock because you have to identify distinguish what is an invasive species? Could this pose a threat? What is illegal? What is endangered at center in this case?.

"But I'll focus on their behavior. They are wasps that are social, so they form colonies. And their predatory. Now beyond that the features that of the especially large most of them that distinguish them from other groups of wasps. Like. Bald faced Hornets Different Genus Dollar Villa notice I call them. Both faced Hornets. That's inappropriate. They're not really hornets. and. Others like paper. WASPS genus policies. Don't make that mistake. Lodo. Don't make that mistake. Because there are some wasps are really docile, really passive, and if you're a gardener or a farmer, you really want those losses, predators of forgive rhys, planting caterpillars and other. You'll hear me say this often passed insights. So. Let's get into specifically. What what everyone this is I'm trying to re. Ryan to Click Bait? People this is. So I? Don't really follow the news that much. Murder wasps have. And I can't tell are. So people can call them murder Hornets as well if they want to. Yeah, people are calling the murder, wasps or murder, or it doesn't matter neither nate neither name is the official common name. It's the Asian giant Hornet and neither name is. appropriate. Why because they're predators? Every predatory species is by default definition on Moore owner right, so if for example you are not of Vegan your murderer. You might be. No I should say wasps there well over one hundred thousand species of WASPS, many of them are parasites and parasitic toits parasites that killed their hosts, and then they're predators, and all the twenty two species of Hornets in the genus VESPA. Are Predators. So. Let's just what what exactly happened in your life. Avengers Endgame With Ann Hornaday

"Washington Post lead film critic and Hornets Talks Avengers. Endgame as it celebrates its one year anniversary the hype and the build up and all that I have to admit that I was approaching this with a little bit of like. Oh let's get it over with already enough you know. And then it really ambushed me emotion of it really. I felt like you know you're too young to remember this. There was a famous episode of the Old Mary. Tyler Moore show with chuckles the clown chuckles. The clown died and And she's the one crying hardest funeral you know. And that's how I felt like I felt like I was completely not prepared for how I would feel during the actual movie and I just think again the Russo brothers did such a good job of that really. They made it emotional and a I don't know I just feel like they hit all the right. Note the goodbyes. Were they felt real and authentic and bad and like the way you know. I don't know the whole thing just. I was really really impressed with the way they did it. I was surprised at my own reaction. I had not reviewed because I was called away for it personal reasons. I wasn't able to review or even fee infinity war when it came out the reviewer of record for that for endgame was my colleague. Michael O'Sullivan because I felt like he deserved to be able to To do this once he had done the first one But I was actually. I had my quibbles with Insanity War I didn't it? Didn't you know I had many more couples with that so I was coming in with such guarded expectations and then it just completely impressed me. I just we could kind of talk about this. But there were so many scenes that just were just so many men between characters and between the characters and figures from their own path. That just got me. They were really really beautiful. You know when marvel does So well is to balance the humor and the action and the drama. Where it they just they have it in the right lane where it doesn't sway too much either way were gets too campy or too serious. They have a successful formula. Dc should not try to replicate it. Because they're really just works for Marvel because just the way their brand was from the beginning. I totally agree and you know I guess looking back and I remember you know feeling so when Ironman came out thinking Oh thank goodness. They were not taking it so seriously. After all the you know it was right after the Nolan Batmans it wrapped up and I thought those got way too heavy and way too dark and Kinda just self serious and then here's this Brett. Literal breath of fresh air and it was Downey kind of it was sort of wrapped up with his own personal story of redemption and recessive. Like he it was you know and and so there was. It was just so good to see him again and just doing something so well in having such fun and bringing his great great talent. He's such a gifted actors such a gifted or and you know. I don't know I just felt like that movie was so symbolic on so many levels and you're right it just started it. Just set the tone perfectly you know and then they manage to kind of carve out these really specific world for these characters so those captain America movies are their own little thing. You know the store Ragnarok did a stunning job of marrying the talent and the writing and acting and it all works. You know in your right. Dc SHOULDN'T I hope they don't try to replicate it. It's it of its own zone. Look for Endgame. Wherever you get your digital or DVD content and definitely read and Hornets at Washington Post Dot Com for bite. This is Tony Tiller.

"Welcome to you. Did what now a podcast where we discussed stories in science and tech that. Make us ask exactly that everyone. Thanks for listening on your host. Stephanie Educator Aficionado and Michael Programmer took a good afternoon. Stephanie how are you? I'm fine and we are surviving? How about you the same happy Cinco de Mayo? Time are listening listening to this. It's probably probably already celebrity. Cinco de Mayo having a Margarita. Anyway he's actually what else you got today. How many people are making tacos tonight for dinner? We taco Tuesday in single tomorrow. This is the thing right. Everybody's Yeah I don't do. I've talked to us. I should make tacos anyway. So lots lots going on in the world. I guess I I saw this recent start like before we we hit record. I noticed the story of the tweeted through the Times which all the coronavirus stuff is supposedly ray me seventeen clicks to get logged in. And let's see a but the title is with Crisper a possible quick test for the virus it looks like they're using crisper to test for for carnivores for covert ninety. I noticed something about that. I was looking into that and Yeah I think there's a lot of different applications for using crisper. You can test for different. Antibodies are you. Can you can engineer a a a gene. That will basically glow under simplify. It'll basically glow if it recognizes the One of the antibodies from Corona virus. And so it could be a really simple way to get that test out there and have it be more accurate than maybe what they're dealing with. Now Sarel yes that's exciting. Everybody's YEAH SPURT UP CASPER AT RYAN. Exactly the kind of a bad rap for all of the different weird types of things that is trying to do but it could prove to be very useful in the coming months ahead. Yeah this was. His name was Zang. I guess he's He's at the broad institute in Cambridge Massachusetts. And he's apparently one of the pioneers of crisper technology or whatever he said it up with a pregnancy test and they got like a little violent stuff. You make something. Put The little drop in and reacts and then you dip the paper in two two lines means you you have in nineteen or or. Don't get the two tests confused. Rather what would you rather have at this moment? Which you find out that that your wife is pregnant or that. She has corona virus. Not Sure Enough I. Let's let her have. She's actually having grown admires test in like an hour. Oh okay well. I hope she doesn't have any sentence now. She just works. Used US going to the office in a lab. So they're just they've they've gotten some tests so they're just gonNA have everybody take a test every once in a while acting so. Yeah so what else are we talking about? No more carnivorous onboard board occurred something else out there in the world. There's a the world is fine. No you know as Americans. We always it. Seems like we always have to have something to panic about. If you you look back in the past year comes in a cycle of about every every couple of months. There's a new thing that we must immediately panic about and shut down everything and of course you know in Corona virus head and we really did have to everything and so now America's kind of getting tired of that so Let's move on. Let's introduce a new I something else about Introduce the murder Hornets from Asia. Great Murder Hormone that. Just this is what third play the fourth leg. I'm not up on my Bible. Yeah I know that's kind of what I was thinking. At what point do I need to let lambs above my above my doorway to prevent my starter? I got a robust Saturday. It will repel mortar murder Hornets. I'm sure yeah. So why is everybody concerned about the murder Hornets? Is it really a big deal? Is this just something else that you know. The media is pushing us to distract us from whatever else is really happening. Should we concerns? So what have you heard about murder Hornets? So far I honestly. I've tried not to read it up hundred Hornets. Because I wasn't really looking for more in my life I'm spending so much more time outside now from omb and like normally all you'll be going trip or visit grandparents or we you know indoor soccer whatever it is. We're doing now slow. Go play in the backyard so the kids get actually retired for bedtime. So you're telling me there's more murder Hornets there. Yeah I'm sorry to burst your bubble but now now we've gotta worry about the Asian Murder Hornets so don't get too Scared about it yet. As of right now they're reported sightings are all the way on the other side of year and We started in in Vancouver and now in Washington. There was a beef farmer. He had a nest and back in November. He went to check on his honeybees and discovered that his entire very healthy beehive with completely destroyed. They were healthy the day before then. He went to go check on the next day and basically he started looking at them and all of their little beheads were cut off his head on Teamer Hornets too. Yeah they are murder. Hornets necessarily because they murder humans. All this is this is violence. I don't need to worry about right. Yes well you know you definitely would not enjoy getting stung by a to inch long Hornets. That is not something that you want to have happen to you. Although scientists from the nineteen th century right. I'm not just out there leading. Bees and spiders stigma right. I guarantee you. Some people are out there trying to test it. I think there's a guy on on youtube somewhere. That has already films himself. Getting stung by a murder Hornet. Just see what would happen surprise. It hurts jackass movie this year. Isn't there Jack Ass movie coming out this year? This isn't this isn't related to that right now it might be. It could be a completely. You know publicity stunt for there are no hornets. That's just the jackass movie. Yeah they're murder. Hornets not necessarily because they murder humans but because they murder other bees and so they can take out an entire hive of bees. In just a few hours they They go in and they. Yeah they basically decapitate all of the bees and take over their nest as do they parade around them ca carrying their heads and spikes put them a little little Little twigs and stuff outside of the. Yeah Yeah so they're pretty. They're pretty deadly. Each Hornet can kill one. Be in every fourteen seconds using its powerful. Amanda Bowles to decapitate decapitated its prey. Oh and I guess so. Those beer are these are we. Arming these BS. How we find him back. How are we protecting the goodies for Hornets are pollinating? Hornets are not pollinating. So yeah this is. This could potentially be a really big problem. This is more more concerning than actually getting stung by the B. Is what effect will it have on the honeybees here in the United States who are already struggling to pollinate all of the things that we need? Pollinated your I already. We already had anxiety about the honeybees. We don't even more right. Yeah so yeah. So what are we gonNA do about these honeybees Years so you know there it. These these murder Hornets come from Japan. And so the problem is that whenever you have an invasive species come from one ecosystem into another ecosystem it's not bringing necessarily its natural predators with it

Zoom could be the new language of film

"Traditional film and television. Production has obviously been halted in the wake of the Kobe. Nineteen outbreak but even when production does resume. This time that we're in could have a profound impact on the way we make movies in the future. People at home are getting super creative. With video whether it's compilations sing alongs over video chat or episodes of snl filmed all at home and Hornets is the film critic for The Washington Post and she says all of this will eventually start showing up in the movies. You know one of the early examples that brought me optimism. Was this amazing video that a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Jeffrey Beecher did of members of his orchestra performing the Appalachian Spring. He very ingeniously cut out the the click track to all of his musicians and they film themselves on their iphones. But then he edited it to resemble a zoom video that found its way into this artistic language that he used that was kind of universal and also very specific to this particular time. And now we're seeing television. Episodes being filmed that way. The parks and recreation reunion was formed to resemble videoconferencing. There will be a feature movie made on Zoom. I'm just convinced of it. And it's just a matter of when and who will make. Do you think it will be made zoom because it will be the only tool available and people being quarantine or because it has now become sort of this like you said immediately recognisable visual language. I think mostly the ladder and I do think that it will be the Lingua Franca of this time. There is no doubt in my mind anybody who's telling a story about this time. That's the way you're going to have to to make it even. If you're not literally making it that way you're going to need to edit and tweak it to resemble that because it's just that's where that's literally where we are. I don't want to call it a revolution necessarily but just the aesthetic promise of that has yet to be fully fully plumbed. Yeah how long will that pipeline be? Do you think I mean? Is it going to be like in two years? All of a sudden every movie has the look of Spring. Twenty twenty movies feature films major feature films. Generally you know you're looking at a year and a half two year kind of a lag time so then you run the risk of looking kind of dated by then by that time you know. I think a half to happen sooner than that. I mean interesting kind of looking back on all the different ways. That filmmakers responded to the iphone like. They've always responded to technological innovation both in terms of just the the content of their films in their formal innovation. But Yeah I think that two year lag time does kind of run the risk of looking a little bit like you're the curve and then I guess one of the other legs of course is how and where we watch these films you've written about small art house cinemas to show films in this time and get by economically. Tell me about that. When theaters closed in March it was mostly a function of Local ordinances was. It was kind of it. They were caught unawares but they were proceeding accordingly until they couldn't anymore for the most part the big chains closed and that was it but these small independent theaters very quickly pivoted in very responsive and creative ways and They went to many of them. Went to these digital streaming options where they could direct their patrons to their websites where they could access digital links to some of the movies that they had already playing and some actually kind of brand new movies to their to their audiences and I think it was a real example of how that independent arthouse world has always been about cultivating their audience capturing their audience being able to communicate with them via email and newsletters and extra programming and Clubs and that's been the way they do their business anyway but then that turned out to be just such a crucial factor in them writing this out in a way that kept their audience with them provided them something to do and to watch during this time. When everybody's desperate for something new to watch and you know keep a little bit of revenue coming in not not millions and millions of dollars but enough to make a little bit of a difference and with a business that so the margins are so razor thin anyway. A little goes a long way. And they're very resourceful with with using those dollars so I've been really really impressed to see how those theaters and the distributors who have given them the movies. Tim Show have have really banded together to kind of forge through this moment. Yeah you you almost wonder what places like that with communities like that could be able to build when they don't have a geographic restriction in some ways exactly and I think a lot of them are discovering that very thing you know they're getting. I spoke with the Executive Director of a nonprofit theater in Baltimore where I live. And she's getting viewers from Canada Alaska. And you know. I think it'll be very interesting to watch what sticks you know. After people do feel comfortable and liberated to come back into the theaters. Some untapped audiences have been identified in this and I know for a fact that a lot of these theaters have zero intention of letting them go. You know they. They are very interested in keeping them around and learning more about them and learning more about how best to communicate with them going forward at and that's two of their local audiences too by the way.

"You know it's a virus but it's probably not gonna be that bad and now I'm living in my basement. So can you tell me that? This won't happen with these Hornets because it sounds like the beginning of another bad movie. No no these are again. Apex Predators can be dangerous when you encountered them but each general We you don't have a we. There's no way to expect this particular pest if it established itself successfully That will be basically overrunning the countryside and everybody has to be living in their basement and keep Keep away from everything no. "So sammy we brought you back because have been going wild over. What's being called a murderer Hornet? What Hornet are we talking about with that name? So we're talking about vesper manner anyway in typically. It's called the Asian giant Hornet. It's the largest hornet species and it's a species of Hornet. Those actually found in North America last year. So it's been months but when we were sounding the alarm about this months ago We we didn't quite have the right marketing. Going calling. We were calling it. Vespa Mandir India Some people call it the spare OBI Which is just not that. Not the best kind of name to go with. When you really WANNA get headlines You go with murder. Hornet someone attach the name murder. Hornet to it. And it's all the we've heard since so they're in the news because last late last year was the first time that they'd been observed in the. Us is that right. It's the time that they've been observed in the US. Because this is an invasive species they're very commonly found in a number of areas throughout East Asia Southeast Asia and in that range. They can be very very very problematic in their well known insect but when they arrived in. North America We were very surprised of course to see them. And we're still doing a good bit of detective work determine how they even got here share. But we're but there in the news this week basically. You're telling me because somebody called murder Hornet. That's precisely so sammy. What do Asian giant Hornets look like? So the Asian giant Hornet is it kind of seems like someone just stitch together a bunch of nightmares and just rain. Because when you look at it straight on do you see this face with these bulbous Sort of teardrop shaped is that kind of curve around in a way that looks sinister. Their jaws are really. What's very frightening on this triangle shaped head? They've got these very sharp saturated jaws and those are very functional in rather frightening. They can tear through a number of different materials. The back end of them is just as frightening so they had the Stinger that is about a quarter of an inch long and can pierce through be e soothes jeans clothing of of pretty much any sort so there there are bundling nightmares and they're like two inches long that's like that's like a good part of my pinkie finger. It's mean we've been saying that it's a Hornet about the size of a normal person's thumb. Oh my God okay. So so the big reason that people are freaking out about them being here is that you know back where they're from originally they can pretty much destroy honeybee colonies right. Yeah it's IT'S AWFUL. So in their native range when they find honeybee colonies Good maybe twenty. Hornets can destroy a colony of forty thousand bees and just a matter of hours so they are very frightening and very concerning but they're actually not as concerning in their native range as you think because the bees that have kind of grown up around them Have evolutionary abilities that allow them to combat these organisms. Really really well Sammy. I have heard about how he's fight these Hornets. And it's wild. I'm not surprised that you've heard about it. Because it is pretty sensational thing to see. Yes got okay so basically you got Hornets like one of these big murder. Hornets show up. And they kind of like they make the initial moves and then they go back and recruit more murder. Hornets fees are trying to deal with that first horn. Is that right? You have to deal with first. Tornado a whole squadron of Hornets will totally Outgun even the largest colonies Those things are like flying armored tanks and so what they have to do is deal with that first scout and they can fix the problem so when they're hanging out in front of the colony cokes. The Hornet inside. Can I give them? Those come. Hither is sure. Hornet comes inside. There's a whole squadron of bees hanging out just above it that drop onto the Hornets body cover it and bees and they all start eating their flight muscles and they actually create so much heat in this process that they cooked the Hornet in the carbon dioxide. That's produced in the process also can suffocate the Hornets as well and so it's a pretty remarkable ability that they create a convection oven in nature to kill their enemies. I mean murder B.'s. I mean this is a an arms race and if the B.'s do not develop some way of killing these hornets they would definitely be extinct by now. Okay so is that way we concern because we're not sure that like our our North American honeybees have the ability to fight them nicely. We're actually well aware the Arby's do not have this ability. Okay and I mean it's just what our bees need right now. Right in the Pantheon of other issues that they're already dealing with now. They have a murder. Hornet along with Varroa mites sucking out their liver and all these different viruses and nutrition issues. It's alive right because Sammy last time on the show you were talking about how you know. Our honeybees are at risk from the three. Ps which are poor nutrition parasites and pesticides. That's the fourth P. Is Perfect because you know now they have to deal with this to potentially. Yeah and okay. I mean our bees. There's only so much like overtime that you can deal with in terms of stress without reducing productivity in the colony even the colonies survive when they're spending so much of their energy. It's just yeah. It's a rough deal so Sammy. I know that some researchers are saying that this is kind of like getting blown out of proportion you know like including the name Murder Hornets how do you? How do you feel about that? So here's how I feel about that. I am glad that people are paying the level of attention to it that they are paying. Because right now this could be something that is blown out of proportion as oh hope that it is but unfortunately in the the spectrum of different invasive species we don't have a wonderful track record it actually keeping invasive from becoming established oftentimes When they arrive. We have a very difficult time ratting. Them Oftentimes we wait awhile. In determining what it is that that we can do about them because they're new to us so the hope is that we kind of act now to to prevent you know. Us losing a lot of honeybees. What can we? What can we do about this? Sammy if we act now and by act now I mean we need to track these Hornet colonies. So there've been a few of them that have been found but the colonies die at the end of the fall in the Queen's who have already made they burrow underground and they just hang out there all winter long but it's around April and May were they start coming out. They start feeding on sap place to build a colony and those are the ones that we have to track. And if we can kill all the queen's that have actually started nesting underground We can effectively keep them from becoming established in the. Us got it. We got a murder the murder Hornets. Unfortunately we have murder the murder Hornets and I being Dr Bugs M not one to pretty much ever tell people that's what we do unfortunately Just because of how concerning these creatures can be for be health. We need to make sure if we can that. We don't allow them to establish Sammy Ramsey. Dr Bugs I mean. I'm sad about the Hornets but I'm glad to hear you talk. I'll say that is always a pleasure to speak with you. Always I am impressed. So your member at the three. Ps You're listening to brother appreciate. "So earlier this week. I mentioned that we'd be covering stories beyond Kovin eighteen on this podcast and I hoped that some more cheerful topics would help. Lighten our collective mood and help us all. Imagine better days which brings me to the murder. Hornets bullets been dubbed. The Murder Hornet murder. Hornets mood a hornets. The so called murder Hornets giant Hornets from Japan that are now in Canada and us. Scientists have dubbed them murder Hornets. Yeah if the first four months of two thousand twenty didn't quite have enough terror for you. No worries this year has got you covered in all seriousness be murder. Hornets are not a product of two thousand. Twenty did not just show up last weekend and we probably shouldn't be calling them murder Hornets that said they're an invasive species they have been seen in Canada they have the potential to disrupt our ecosystem and I mean they do kill people. And if you haven't seen a picture of them yet go look at one. They look like little flying demons. But what are they beyond a scary picture and a headline? What do they do? Exactly that so worrisome. How is British Columbia to control their spread and finally it? Is this another thing that seems terrifying until scientists tell us not to worry and then a few months later? I am hiding in my house again. Or what because right now? I'm about to throw to Claire for our daily cove in nineteen update but if by September. Claire is doing a murder. Hornet update. I'M GONNA be pissed okay. Claire you're up. The federal government has announced a deal reached with the provinces to boost essential workers pay. It's a four billion dollar plan and it's up to the provinces to decide who qualifies but as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says everyone can agree that essential workers are risking their lives by doing their jobs during the pandemic and they deserve a raise. If they're making minimum wage Quebec is delaying the planned reopening of daycares elementary schools and businesses in Montreal by one week. So they're now. Scheduled to reopen may twenty fifth. This mostly comes from pressure from board. Who said teachers don't feel safe going back to classrooms right now and that they weren't prepared to go back so soon. Saskatchewan has confirmed that schools will remain closed for the rest of the academic year. And it's starting to think about what will happen come. September grade. Twelve graduation ceremonies have also been cancelled so school divisions or trying to organize virtual ceremonies and lastly British Columbia says. It'll take up to two years to clear the backlog of surgeries that were put on hold because of Cova nineteen. And that's best case scenario if there no resurgence of the pandemic more than thirty thousand surgeries or put on hold two months ago and the cost to get them done. We'll be at least an additional two hundred and fifty million dollars as of Thursday evening. Sixty four thousand nine hundred and ninety two cases of cove nineteen in Canada with four thousand five hundred and twenty four deaths Jordan drawings. And this is the big story Paul Van. Westerndorp is the provincial apiarists for BC. He's held the position since nineteen ninety. Hello Paul why don't we just start with the very first question is what is a murder? Hornet and is that actually a fair term for it. Now this is the spillover for what we get from. South of the border Media invention the term murder Hornets is is generates unnecessary amount of anxiety and of course flare a fair bit of sensationalism but doesn't really reflect on the correctness of this of this particular Hornet. I mean I'm not trying to dismiss or diminish the the seriousness of this particular invasive species but clearly did not want to supposed to be called and we prefer to call it either. The age in giant Hornet or to be more clear often. Call it by the scientific name which has VESPA Menarini. Ah this mandarin followed by eight men. Dherinia and the reason we often use that term as because the genus VESPA is very well represented in eastern Asia and is comprised of something like sixteen different species of Hornets and this particular one is the largest hornet species of all In fact the largest order to the world and that one has done been founded confirmed in British Columbia since since August last year. So can you describe it? A little bit You mentioned it's the biggest one in the world. It looks terrifying. What is it Like what does it do? Why is it here? Will Wyatt is here. Maybe that is the most difficult question to answer because it is the question would then be honest as to. How did it get here? We do not know how it got here. But we have strong suspicion. That was an inadvertent introduction. through Belco Taylor's at harbours ships that came with containers or with imported vehicles. Things of that kind and the reason we think that is because in an I'm O- older finding so far is very close to either harbors or water or a railroad tracks so We think that these things are hitchhikers. And from shipments that come originating eighty. The Hornets itself is an Apex Hunter. In auto which at this on the very top of the food chain of the insect world there are not many other insects that would ever dare to feast on these Hornets but instead these Hornets are feasting on other insects. That this their mission in life have Some successful show they. They have unusually large heads and that is to accommodate the gigantic men ables the eighteen apparatus the mouthpiece if you will of these Hornets so that they can very effectively eat insects So they're the top Predator of the tech world and one of the reasons that we are somewhat concerned about. This is This particular species is a ground. Nester does not make the traditional paper. Mapuche nests that you sometimes find with our native wasps and Hornets That you select Xi in in vegetation or the league or something like this no Asian giant Hornet builds its nest in the ground and and therefore it is very difficult to detect it. Prefers forced a habitat so it is definitely not necessary in open fields but prefers forest habitat and it seems to be confined primarily in areas where there is quite a bit of moisture in other words addition a maritime climate favoring insect and the worry that we have their twofold this classified as serious. Honeybee Predator and does quite a bit of damage to honeybee colonies later in the season but the more immediate concern that we have is its potential threat to human health and safety In Japan where Occurs Naturally? That insect is responsible for a few dozen human fatalities every year. Not For any offensive Behavior but largely because it is fiercely defending its nest and most of these fatalities occur because people inadvertently Step on or disturb a nest and these huge Hornets are coming out to then Do all kinds of of damage. So that's probably one of the things that unfortunately gave birth to the name murder Hornet. But I'm really curious to what these Hornets stings. Due to the body that makes it So much worse than a regular Hornet's sting. Are they poisonous? Are they just bigger and more dangerous? The latter the the fact is the fact that has been reported that Honeybee Venom is actually more powerful except honeybee is a tiny little character. Compare to this giant insect. The Asian giant Hornet Has a smooth a stinging apparatus rather than an embarked Stinger? Like what the Honeybee has and this? Hornet therefore sting repeatedly and can inject a fairly large volume of the venom. In addition to the venom itself it also contains an peptide and an enzyme that causes tissue necrosis so the wound that it creates with the sting Stinger becomes even larger because part of the tissue then dissolves and creates bleeding and Potential infection so. That does sound really terrifying. My automatic next question is do we have a sense of how many of them are here where they are. What kinds of stuff are you guys doing to find that out that is that is the challenge we face? Oh so Contrary to the US media which is typically very U. S. centered. As you know we have been discovered the This particular species since August and September of last year and In an I mo is the only a nest of the Asian giant Hornet that has ever been detected and destroyed in North America But since that time We have done extensive monitoring of the location there in no other Specimens were were recited. Then last fall infected the separate middle of November Assembly Report came in often single specimen found in a urban setting in white rock. Now why drunk as a small community South Vancouver very close to the Canada? Us border three weeks. Later to our big.

So if you haven't seen the news basically a species of Hornet has shown up in the states and people are pretty worried about them. Sammy has dealt with these critters firsthand. Doing be research in Thailand. These Hornets just kept showing up and carrying off my BS. And then I would come back the next day and they would just be nothing left with a bunch of headless bees inside of my colony very disturbing. That's when Sammy took matters into his own hands. put on my suit and just started whacking. Hornets out of the air. And I think I got a little bit too cocky and one of them showed up and had like a sister with her and so I am knocked her out of the air and the other one just grabbed onto my leg. Va Looking. It's is one of those coming after me. It started chewing into my suit and jest whacking. It's Stinger into the side of of my be suiting thankfully I was wearing a suit those really puffy and really large and so it Stinger while it got through. Sammy I wouldn't have died so that people do need as even though they have the name murder Hornet. International Fighter Competitions

"We're here to talk about. International fighter competitions and went to a presentation by till group analysts. Richard Lafia way back in January. Seems like another time but he talked about how this year in particular when it comes to aviation across all sectors. The fighter market is the hottest one going Tony. You recently wrote in Aviation Week of how the German fighter competition which is extraordinarily interesting right now and getting complicated by the industrial base implosion caused by Kovin. Why don't you tee up? The situation. What Germany has seemingly decided where that might be headed hodge of high listeners? I Yeah No. It's really a intriguing situation. So the whole German watch procurement has been complicated by its continuing interest in providing deterrence capability. Tonight so couple of years ago Jim. Nfl's chief said we won't buy the F. Eddie five the French came on and said if you pursue a thirty five by we're going to kick you out the future Combat Air System so the Germans are sort of panicked. They got rid of the thirty five out the shortlist and then basically cut their list down to Eurofighter and the F eighteen Super Hornet and then last week the German Defence Minister. A K K issues known announced that she was proposing a by. All of Typhoon Eurofighters call him in Germany and the Super Hornet and several growlers principle being that the Super Hornets provide that jewell capable aircraft. That would drop the Nuke Eurofighters would do the rest of the work to replace the Tornado. Tornado is currently the only European aircraft a European built aircraft. That can drop the be sixty one this the jewel weapon that's in several NATO bases across Europe so Jimmy wants to replace the Tornado. We've both the Super Hornet and the Eurofighter. But it's created a political storm. There's now talk about Germany's future as a nuclear deterrent nation. And this is sort of push to try and make this decision will push this decision making for this at back into tour. Twenty twenty two twenty twenty three. So it's a it's a bit of a mess for Jimmy. Which way do you think it's going to go? Do you think they'll stay on their current track or will the German government be swayed by Airbus's argument that its industrial base will be irreparably harmed by the purchase of American fighters of US would not particularly impressed? They call this a compromise to fall on it. Would irreparably damage the gym. Defense Industry Knife propose a compromise deal where all the typhoons would be contracted this year. The only way they feel that they can go on I think given how controversial the Super Hornet buyers and ongoing participation in the NATO deterrent. I think it's going to be a real difficult issue for the next election. I think it'd be a real discussion point for Germany country. That doesn't really like spending on. New Equipment is hard see. Also the Super Hornet being a effective deterrents carrying platform in the twenties thirties and forties. When when it will be in service I think a lot of nations will be questioning. Germany's judy to this mission. In the coming is Steve. Did you have something to add to that? While it just like. Tony said a couple years ago that move by France and Airbus really to exclude the F. Thirty five from this competition. I mean that's that's really where this comes in. Because the F thirty five is being primed as the US and European dual-capable capable aircraft in the US has started the integration process for the B. Sixty one Dash twelve the latest version with the improved tail kit with improve navigation and guidance for this nuclear bomb that should be delivered in the end service. Data's in twenty twenty five a got several of the European forces that are participating in that mission are using that aircraft For that purpose. Obviously it's got some of the Elo characteristics and strike characteristics that you that you'd want for delivering nuclear ordinance in if that ever comes to be an even as a deterrent. It's it's very effective so I mean that that is the the big issue now of course neither a typhoon or the Super Hornet or qualified today to carry the B. Sixty one you know so that would be required for there. Be An integration required. A process from car for both of them. Of course Boeing can point to the fact that the original F. Eighteen Hornet was qualified to carry the B sixty one. Fatf is you know a substantial modification of their aircraft. But they're familiar with the process that it would be something you'd have to add completely new to the typhoon platform. I wanted to swing over to Finland. Tony you've been tracking the Finnish fighter competition. They spent the early part of this year testing the various contenders for that. How long is that competition going to take to unfold? And which way do they seem to be leaning at this point if only it was as predictable as trying to figure out way they were leaning. Finland's processes quite different to the every other fighter competition. I've seen covered in the last few years since have been aviation week when he's gone is is a process where there's no comparisons are made between the aircraft. They test them. Although then simulate the aspects that they have been able to evaluate verify and then they'll put that into a war game at the end of this year and that will be the deciding factor in which platform. They will go ahead and choose and that decision will come in. In twenty twenty one so got the five main Western fighter jet to Typhoon Griffin Rafael Super Hornet and the thirty five. Thirty five is probably likely to be the one to be after all. It has virtually been successful in every fighter contest. It's taking part in with the exception of Germany as we just talked about the challenge. Here is that. Finland is a non-aligned country. Radio it's not a NATO country the tiny laundry with the European Union and it has very different needs very different needs and maybe some of the aspects of the F thirty five such systems alias warehousing of parts true wider distribution system that would be more. Nato designed rather than for a neutral country may not fit some of those needs plus it has very expensive infrastructure and so on so yet. The next few months could be very interesting. You point out in January and February. They tested all five craft in the country. It's going to be a very interesting
