"The courts and so there was a very small a number of decision makers and when you look at operation barbarossa the idea that the soviet union could be invaded on a sixteen hundred mile front even though it was the largest invasion in history three and a half million people but the soviet union was so vast and there were no german reserves and there were been there had been voices cases of dissent gentle dairy and said you know they have something called the t thirty four tank. That's better than anything that we have anything that we have on the drawing boards and he he was dismissed as sort of a wigner alarmist and so there was an by the same token people had gone to stalin and said richard sergey our plant plant in the tokyo embassy has has outlined this whole invasion and we know what hitler's doing he's going to invade us along this huge european front and stolen had people shot because he thought that they were agents from britain or the united states trying to stir up oh civil war but of what he would call internet's in war between two authoritarian powers first and then more importantly they sort of mirror image themselves because they were not only both suspicious of one another but they both employed the same means earnings and by that i mean it was once asked what would he do stall on if he won and he said well i'll give i'd give them a nice retirement doc under lock and key but of when i get a hold of roosevelt and churchill i'll hang both of them because stolen as a genius. He was not afraid to kill twenty million people so they had a very very sick admiration for one another because they were although their ideologies were dissimilar. Their methodologies were almost identical in the final question that i'll put you world war two occupies a fundamentally different place in the american psyche other modern wars it still valorize in popular culture. It's really the only war within living memory that is almost always thought of as a source of national pride in a lot of that probably goes to the extremity. How many of the war how sharp the moral contract was between the combatants how dramatic the stakes were the holocaust how implausible any of the alternatives to war really seem but moose wars. Don't come quite to that level of clarity. I mean if you think of almost everything that followed korea vietnam. The first gulf war was maybe a little less ambiguous but it almost most kind of seems forgotten now <hes> afghanistan iraq so my question for you. Is it a mistake for americans to judge edged the value of a war by how it compares to world war two given that it was such an outlier. Is that setting the bar too high or is that sort of precisely why it's valuable well. It's a war that played uniquely american strengths of industrial production firepower <hes> logistics and so there there were no restraints on it once we were attacked then we've had the moral high ground hitler declared war against us. We didn't claire war against hitler. Same is true against against mussalini so we had moral clarity as you point out but then there was no idea that anybody had nuclear weapons except eventually aas and there was going to be the this was a nation that was butchering thousands and tens of thousands and millions of people that were innocent. Civilians of the sixty five million dead world war two seventy percent of them rant civilians so this chang was true of japan that was butchering fifteen million in china so the american public thought thought we were attacked there are no restraints on our response and our response even if it turns out to be quite punitive and quite deadly is is going to be a moral act because it's going to prevent these awful regimes from killing more people so the more germans japanese that we kill the more innocence live live and that was unique because we've never had a war before where the united states was attacked <hes> first and then second where where there was no nuclear restraint on the logical expression of american firepower and then three this isn't a war to be fought in the jungles tells of yet nam or right along the chinese border <hes> korea or out in afghanistan. It was a conventional war where we had easily easily. <hes> supplied areas north africa or the solomons are the philippines or europe and we could use conventional firepower so it wasn't a war where you know we saw iraq or as what donald trump said the other day about afghanistan i could i could blow up and kill ten million people but we can't do that. So then we fight these wars on the terms of our enemies in that usually means it's asymmetrical uninvolved civilians and press coverage and the entire masks asks that we've seen in the last seventy five years afterward to you've been listening to the classes this podcast with victor davis hanson remember you can read victor's work get defining ideas at hoover dot org as well as victor hansen dot com and if you enjoy classes is please.

"Hoover dot org. He works at the Hoover institute, which is on the campus. Stanford title of his piece is a licensed to hate. And it is a piece that points out and marvels at the ability. Of the left to engage in some of the most insultingly hate filled rhetoric in the form of allegations against you, me and Trump. And they never get called on it. While they have this exemption to engage in all of them just filthy mean-spirited hatred that they harboured let anybody. Say anything they disagree with a nice start calling it. Hey, and they start trying to shut it down. And what he's done here is gotten some examples of some of this hatred. And it really it really is. Instructive? Recently on CNN, former Republican politico and now never Trump cable news analyst Rick Wilson, by the way, this this guy Wilson, he's got the ability to be funny, but he is so filled with hatred for Trump that it's it's hard to catalogue. It it is it is hard to contain it. He's card-carrying never-trumper and just despises Trump. Hates his guts irrationally. So. Rick Wilson on CNN recently described Donald Trump supporters as his credulous rube ten toothed base. It's in quotes credulous rube ten as in the number ten tooth base. Wilson was not original in his smear of the sixty three million Americans have voted for Trump. He was likely resonating an earlier slander of political reporter, Marco Caputo Caputo had tweeted of the crowd. He saw a Trump rally, quote, if you put everyone's mouths together in this video you'd get a full set of teeth. Now, what's the point of these stereotypes that poor white working class people who supposedly voted for Trump? Eight improperly did not practice proper dental. Hygiene, didn't go to dentists are all three are they just plain stupid. And that's how you describe somebody stupid is having no teeth. Well, what he was challenged Marco Caputo double down. He snarled. All no, no, no. I made fun of garbage people jeering at another person as they falsely accused him of lying and flipped him off somebody fetch a fainting couch. If you're mad at me over this Caputo's garbage people was a synonym for the smears that to career FBI agents on separate occasions had called Trump voters garbage people that would be struck strokes Merck. Lisa page, some of that cabal there. In the released department of Justice text communications involving the Clinton Email investigation, and unidentified FBI employees texted to another FBI attorney, his contempt for the Trump voter and indeed middle America itself. Quote, Trump supporters are all poor to middle class or uneducated. They're lazy peo- S's pieces of excrement. Well in two thousand sixteen Trump receives about ninety percent of all Republican votes about the same ratio as one by both McCain and Romney. So the same people that voted for McCain around you voted for Trump are they a bunch of port middle-class uneducated lazy pieces of excrement. In the now, notorious texts between the Lisa page and Peter Struck strokes smirk fired FBI operatives on Robert Mueller, special counsel team struck strokes smirk right before the two thousand sixteen election texted his paramour page, quote, just went to a southern Virginia. Walmart, I could smell Trump's support. These are people, by the way. They don't expect the stuff to ever be seeing this this other talking to each other. This is the contempt. These are these are establishmentarian times. This is part and parcel of the. Contemptuous. Arrogant condescension that the people in Washington have everybody else. And the actor Jim Carey recently tweeted a picture of Trump's supporters as apes. Representative Hank Johnson. Who also worried that too many troops based on the shoreline of Guam might tip the island over and capsize it. That's Hank Johnson. He recently compared Trump to Hitler. He characterized Trump's supporters ninety percent of the Republican party as quote older, less educated less prosperous, and they're dying early. Their lifespans are decreasing and many are dying from alcoholism, drug overdoses, liver disease or simply a broken heart caused by economic despair. For former vice president, Joe, Biden, Trump supporters are very Hewlett people the dregs of society, of course, Hillary and the deplorables comes to mind now the force of such human nizing, invective that transcends political differences. Trump voters were not just mistaken in their political feelings. They look like toothless zombies. They stunk up stories maybe not even quite human destined to die off and all this from supposedly progressive liberals quick to demonize others who would mimic their venom. You know, liberals are right there unit. They hear anybody talking like this about them. Why it's the end of the world. About the same time as Rick Wilson's recent smear on CNN multi millionaire TV personality, Donny Deutsch. Weighed in on TV about the Trump supporters who favor building a wall on the southern border. Quote. This is all Trump has left that one metaphor that one thing that talks to that thirty nine forty percent of his base since even the black man in the Brown man, and a Jewish man of the media man in the banker man is all coming to take your wife. According to dodgers analysis where the legion of Democrats, including Biden and Schumer who supported the secure fence act in two thousand six also worried over there variety or is it just the working middle class. That's a bunch of scum. Both Wilson and Donny Deutsch in the past had also characterized Trump supporters is Nazi like both in lieu of any analyses of wire. How Trump got elected or has non success in restoring the economy to robust growth, both these guys resorted to crude stereotypes of a constituency in a fashion, they knew would be exempt from criticisms of bias and crude stereotyping. Similarly, four historian, John mecum and Representative Steve Cohen, Republican Tennessee or democrat, Tennessee, Trump's audience and appeal are similar to those of the Ku Klux Klan of the nineteen twenty s. The New York Times takes loud pride in its adamant opposition to hatred and racial class and gender bias at least in theory. That's why both hired and understandably fired in the same day tech writer Quinn Norton once the times discovered that she had remained friends with notorious all right racist. Andrew Aren Heimer despite claims of frequently dissociating herself from his repugnant views, and she goes onto describe other hires by the times like Sarah Jong befriended a racist Harvard Law School, and it goes on and on for decades race and gender. Studies. Academics had argued that. Overtly expressed racism against whites was not real racism now it can be contextualised by prior white oppression. Meaning whites are fair game. Because there'd be original racist. Their original oppressors. So you can say about whites whatever you want in the age of furor against Trump their theories now went off campus, and we're being judicata by a wider constituency, and yet they didn't seem to win agreement from the general public. But the hatred was not confined to media and politicos it rather also came from the very top of the democrat party after the election. Hillary Clinton double down on her earlier smear of Trump's basis deplorables in recalibrating Obama's old saw the white working class Clinger's who had failed to appreciate his transformative candidacy she told an audience Hillary did in moon by India. I won the places that are optimistic diverse dynamic moving forward his whole campaign. Make America great again was looking backwards. You don't like black people getting rights. You don't like women getting rights. You don't wanna see that indian-americans exceeding more than you, are whatever that problem is I'm gonna solve it. Trump said the end these racists responded. Mr. Hansen goes on with examples like this for numerous pages. And then asks what is all this hate speech as uttered by people on the left signify. Well, one thing is there's terrible frustration among both the progressive left and the never Trumpers on the right? Terrible frustration. So far Trump hasn't been stopped his foreign domestic agendas often find success in resonate with forty to forty five percent of the American people much of the uncouth nece, then reflects their own frustrations and sense of alien nation that millions of Americans have tuned them out. And boy is this bingo, I think what all this is is these people used to think of themselves as the great opinion leaders opinion makers, and they're being ignored. They've warned everybody for all these years about Trump. They've told everybody Trump's this kind of reprobate and that and they can't get his numbers below forty two percent. And that's been their objective to drive him down to the thirties or twenties, and they can't get it done. And they're frustrated and they're mad at you for not believing them. So they're piling on their adding on their intensifying and also they're cowards. Most of the slurs are voiced by elites, particularly politicos journalists and celebrities maybe their anger is driven by class as in how can their own superior logic and reasoning failed resonate with sixty three million voters, how come Trump can talk to these people, and we can't why do they listen to him and not us answer. Well, obviously, Trump voters are stupid, hopefully, stupid, they're ignorant. They're ugly. They're filthy their dirty. They can't take care of their own personal hygiene. And now they're becoming like apes and Nazis. That's how arrogant this crowded plus cowardice, those who slander us as deplorables and irredeemable assume that they can say almost anything. And expect no pushback in this is the real key. This is the exemption misses. The licensed to hate. Hey, can say whatever they want. And there isn't going to be one. Negative reaction to these people. They are not going to be held accountable. There won't be any pushback. They get to say all this stuff. With freedom. So we're learning at the entire idea of political correctness was never much about universal ideas of tolerance of the other or insistence that language and protocols must not stigmatize individuals. What we're witnessing? Instead is that it is fine to demonize millions of Americans because of their appearance because of their hygiene because of the way they look like they smell because they remind you feces and apes if it serves the leftist political agenda in the words, you can be as mean-spirited an extremist and fill with hate all you want as long as your target is Trump voters and Republicans you'll be hailed and applauded and invited back over and over again on cable news to continue the vitriol and the hatred. Cultural progressivism is about everything. But. Principal by the way. Did I not tell you Theresa May one? The no confidence vote exactly because she did exactly what they wanted her to do. She made it look like Brexit can't happen. I was right. Theresa May hangs on. If you believe the media, she was going to be sent away in the most humiliating defeat because she just couldn't make Brexit happened. B S. She did exactly what they wanted. She made it look like people don't want Brexit anymore. Don't want to leave the European Union. So the no confidence vote she had a call because she lost four hundred volts to two hundred votes in parliament yesterday. But she wins. The no confidence vote. Talk about the fix being in people everywhere want the American dream, so should.

"And they did when they entered. The next factor that you side is driving the division illegal immigration. Now, as we know there is a contingent out there that regards the very existence and enforcement of immigration laws is anathema. I won't try to caricature that case, but let me temp to present this slightly more temperate version of it, which is that? Yes, we prefer Leila emmigration to it's illegal counterpart, but America has a long history of simulating immigrants. This is a cradle nation that doesn't regard race or national origin. It's barriers to entry in terms of becoming fully American and the levels of illegal immigration, obviously, sub optimal. But America is strong enough that this doesn't pose any threat to our social fabric. What do you think it might be more dire than that will member the Democratic Party used to be against illegal immigration? I could find in five seconds on the internet. I can find great quotes from not just Iraq. Obama was specially Bill and Hillary Clinton, and that was because. They felt that they tax the social service system. They being illegal immigrants and poor people would lose access who they would be crowded out to. They competed with entry level wages, and that wasn't fair and three. They serve the interest of corporate agriculture and were an obstacle to unionization. They're all legitimate. And then we had a million people come at year. We have eleven to twenty million at a time when we don't any longer have allegiance to the melting pot. We believe in the salad bowl multi-culturalism. And so what we did was we turned immigration from a limited measured legal Merab somewhat mirror critic and diverse enterprise into mostly if d sixty percent from Central American Mexico. Mostly people who do not have a diploma, mostly people who come illegally and mostly people who don't have skills other than entry level jobs, and then we put them into a highly politicized highly competitive economy. And so when somebody breaks her arm or they get old or they have five kids, then suddenly that job at the meat packing plant or washing dishes doesn't look so much better than what was true in Oaxaca or chops or Guatemala. But we have all these people who want a piece of the illegal immigrant. We have the employer who wants more because he this guy's now forty or fifty, and he's heard or he's not as hard working. For such wages as he was. And then we have Mexico who gets twenty six billion dollars a year and remittances and uses these immigrants ponds for their foreign policy levers to affect u. s. policy toward the border. And then we had the Democratic Party who feels that either people become citizens to like the nineteen Eighty-six. Amnesties are their second generation children, but they feel they're changing the demographic and they flipped California. They flip Nevada, they flip Colorado. They flip New Mexico, and they can flip Erazo no in Texas and win the electoral college. And then of course you have the identity, politics, people, second third generation who feel that if you're Kevin Leone and you're sort of an obscure assemblyman all of a sudden you're Kevin daily on with an accent over your your last, oh, and your lay on and you've epn size your name, and suddenly you're an ethnic. Trim Tribune. And so I'm just picking on one person, but it happens everywhere. So there's so many vested interest in having illegal immigration, but it really divides the people because a lot of entry level jobs in the African American or the Bario communities. Those those jobs, the wages have been depressed because of alternate sources of imported labour. People don't like the idea that certain people don't have to follow the law. They can pick and choose. They enter illegally. They reside illegally the IRS. There was one million fraudulent ID's if you are I or anybody who's helping to produce this podcast podcast had multiple identities, then we would be committing a felony we, our careers would be ruined. Yet. We have one million people here who do such things and you're not considered at all serious crimes, and so that it divides everybody between those who feel that illegal immigration is going to change the demain. Griffey politically culturally. This is going to be a good thing in the law shouldn't apply and people who are more traditional want measured legal Mercati in diverse immigration. So the last question that I'll put you if if we're in a tailspin, to what degree can we pull out? Are there factors that you look at and think, okay, this could actually maybe bridge the divide a little bit add politically, some of the poison out of the debate. Yeah, I think so. I think if we build a wall and we had e verify and we deported people here who had committed a crime and had never had a work history and just came without long residents, probably a million to two million people. We'd end up with nine or eight million people who were working. They had not committed crimes. They've been here for five years, let's say, and we could give them a green card what they do ever. That's their business, pay a fine stay here and then build the wall. And that would be the end of new immigration. And then we could go back to the melting pot and all this ethnic tribalism. And so if your name is consolidate, so your name is Wilson or Chang. Big deal doesn't give you any deficit or plus when you apply for Jobert missions, it's simply the way it used to be. And then on the education, as I said, I think we really need national exit exam. And then we would see to what degree a particular college prepares. Students, and we would learn very quickly that somebody who gets a degree at Hillsdale College in history is probably a lot better prepared than UC Irvine or UC riverside, even Berkeley or Stanford for that matter because they have a traditional curriculum that would help. And I really think that these social media, I'm not a big fan of regulation, but I, if they're going to politicize these public utilities and I think that they need to have some oversight, especially on things like product liability and monopolies and trust. I don't know why Google can you know buy out all the complex competition. Facebook, combine all the competition, and then we only have one outlet for social media use that would help a lot of.
