How Was a Young Spencer Klavan Inspired to Study Classics at Yale?
"Want a little bit of your story. How is it that you ended up going to Yale and being, it sounds like a classics major there. How did what was your upbringing like that led you to that? Because that's a pretty radical thing for a teenager to do to say, I want to go to that place and study classics. Yeah, and it's weird because I do remember having that really definite sense that that's what I wanted to do. But you're absolutely right. I mean, I always think about this moment in Homer's Iliad where Ajax, the great giant, is striding from ship to ship because he's so big, he can walk across the prows. And my education almost felt like I was doing that, but the ships were sinking behind me. There was always this sense that I was kind of getting the last of a great academic tradition that was kind of starting to crumble or to suffer from capture. And what saved me would rescue me was what I alluded to before. And that was just a childhood surrounded by great works. I had to realize that wasn't normal. I was gradually as I grew up, I came to understand that I was lucky to know these minds that live between the covers of these books. A lot of people think of this as kind of like these are dusty tomes, they're primitive they're superstitious. They're backwards or what have you. I knew from a very early age that none of that was true. I knew that these were friends. And that meant that, of course, some of these books are difficult, some of the stuff I'm writing about in my book is not obvious or easy. But it's not there just to provide to furnish material for PhD theses. It's not there just to interest eggheads like me. These are these are the best these texts contain the best that has been thought and said about how to be excellent at being human.

"Later tonight and we will get to that because we have some juicy ones, Romans here serve in takes. Yeah, it's on 11th tonight. We'll see all that. Mama made it. And we're back. Let's have a Tucson and Bill is up next. Hey there. How you doing, Paul fine, bob? Hi, I'm doing great. Listen, I have a piece of information. I worked at WMC a.m. in Memphis in 1974, 5 and 6. And for one year, I also was the voice of the Memphis state tigers when the world famous Jack Eaton was during the television broadcast. Wide open. Do you recall that at all? I had, I do. I grew up idolizing Jack Eaton and, you know, that was a team we followed. My late mother was the biggest Memphis state basketball fan in the world, so I would accompany her to games. But I vaguely I had just gone to school that year. That was my first year at UT, so I probably didn't hear as many games, so were all the games on television. We did yes, we got 8 games on TV. I did the games that you see LA pepperdine. Oh, yeah. But I do remember WMC. It was 79 on the radio dial in 5 on the TV dial. That's correct. And I did the afternoon drive show for three years and then the company asked if I would be kind enough to do play by play, which I had been doing in Texas. I had done a lot of Texas high school football at that time. So when I made my move to WMC, which I enjoyed Memphis greatly had that opportunity to spend one year working in the play by play booth after Jack went to TV and I worked with the old George Kirk. Oh, my goodness, yes. I do remember him. Well anyway, I wanted to call him let you know. That is actually so interesting. I will tell you this quick story, again, your 12 11, 13, 14, and you grow up listening to somebody. And many years later, Jack started doing a show, I guess it was on that channel. I really don't remember. He started doing a sports talk show like everybody else. And his producer called me one day. And when I came up, I literally could not speak when I was on the show with him as a guest. He was I mean, we all see things differently and then you get older and you get cynical. Like, I am. But he was the soundtrack of my youth. I can assure you. Well, Jack was one of the nicest guys I ever had a chance to work with. And on many occasions when we go on the road that year, because remember, we had John Gunn who passed away at a young age. Right. We also had we also had Victor Reid at off guard. Was that the year that gene bartow was he still there in 74? No, he had gone to UCLA. No. He went to Illinois. Right. And then Wayne Gates took her. Wayne took over. Okay. Yeah, and that's who I was working with, but yeah, Marco had gone up to Illinois after he had taken one year there would be later reunited with coach barto in Birmingham and we became such close friends. That was another one bill that I hear when we became friends. Even as he was getting retired and was close to the end, it was still hard for me to believe, I'm sitting here with the coach of my youth. But then again, I was a very impressionable kid. Well, he was a very great guy. How long were you? So when did you so you were there how long, Bill? I stayed in Memphis for three years, and then I had an opportunity to go out. The California and actually do a sports stock show at KSP and Sacramento. The only reason I left Memphis because I thoroughly enjoyed the radio station and Scripps Howard was the owners at the time, which was the WMC. I worked for their newspaper in Birmingham. How great this has been to, I mean, I feel like I know you even though I've never met, but it is great to reunite. Yes, it is. And I'd like you to make a comment. And this is hypothetical. I'm a sooner, graduate of Oklahoma university. And my question is, let's say OU goes ahead and is able to knock off the next four games. And they go four to 13 and O and the committee, which I'm not crazy about this committee, decides not to put them in the let me jump in because we're out of time. I don't think.

"Special episode today. We've got a House guest Roman Harper. Our good friend here joining the show will also have Jason Brown, South Carolina quarterback after that big time win over the Florida Gators, but you're a recent Hall of Famer. So we feel very blessed here to have you on. How do you feel being with us? That's the question. Yeah. I feel like I made it, you know? Like I really made it. I'm gonna like real TV right now. I got a football stuff that's I've been doing that since I was little. This is like I made it. No, or like peasants on an actual Hall of Fame. I'm like a real show. Okay, Roman. So one thing we do, one thing we've done this season is we've picked one thing we know. One thing we think we know and one thing we can't figure out in regards to the SEC football. We're gonna bring that back in today's show. So I'll start. I'm gonna go with one thing I know. I said it when we did it the first time. One thing I know, SEC is the best conference in the country. I still stand by it. That is one thing that I don't know. Yeah, back in week three or four was when we were making these early early thoughts and I think Trey is held up. How do you feel about that? I totally agree with it 1000%. Of course. Mine was that Georgia has the best defense in all of college football. And I feel very strongly about that still as we enter week 11. I feel almost like a mind reader, like a fortune teller. How did I know that Georgia was gonna be both you ladies are so smart and dead on and with a list is that was the one that I know is that Georgia's defense is by far the best defense in the country. Not only that. But when they put their backups in, teams still don't score. That even seconds of. When you have Georgia, defensive players saying, yeah, they scored a touchdown on us, and that's too much. We can't. It's unbelievable. So that's your thing. You know, I was with you. I'm curious Roman because you obviously played defense at a very high level. If you break down Georgia's defense, what unit stands out to you the most. In Georgia's defense. It has to be the line. It has to be now I want to say the line, but the line backers are so good. They play three or four of these guys and they are outstanding. They fly around. They hit the ball through the tone setters and they get everybody lined up. So when it comes to the smarts, the ability, the speed in which they play, there's nobody else doing it. The Kobe dean is an absolute monster. They all are, but it's hard to pick one. All right, oh, what's our next one? One thing we think we know. One thing we think we know, all right, so when we did this away back when, the one thing I thought I knew was that the east. Was that the east would be decided between Georgia and Florida that obviously tanked, all right, now I think normally that's a pretty safe and photo. It's really good. Let's not just say that they didn't lead in rushing. You know, it's not pretend that they weren't starting off hot. Now the one thing I think I know is Tennessee is the second best team in the east. Which great timing because Roman and I were on SEC now on Tuesday night and where did you put Tennessee in the east? They are the second best team. I think you guys are definitely doing your homework on this show. Where did you put I think you put Florida third to last? You went vandy, Missouri, Florida. Correct. Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee. Give it two more weeks for the change even more. It'll probably change. It's always changing. Yeah, I remember the first time you did that with the west. And then the next week it was always said last night we were like now that Romans ranked it, it's gonna be different. In a week, my thing that I thought I knew back in week three or whatever it was was that the SEC could get two teams in the college football playoff final four. Still feel good about that. I think that there's a good chance that Alabama makes it to Atlanta can beat Georgia if there's a CFP spot on the line. I don't feel like 1000% about it, but I think there's a good chance it could happen. It's still out there. Still in the air. Romans like no, it's not out. Is there one thing where I'm in the you think you know? I think Tennessee's better. Okay. Think. Like then last year relative to better than one. Does he have to prove themselves a little bit? Tennessee's back. We don't have time to get to the things that we can't figure out. So you're going to have to watch out of pocket.

And breakdowns from analysts and insiders who doesn't seem Philly is in all that much of a rush. Listen to the world by wherever you get your podcast. Troy is up next in Tuscaloosa. Trey good afternoon to you. Trey there. He's not. What can I tell you? Brett is up next in Atlanta. Hello, Brett. Good Paul. How you doing? We're doing great, thank you. I just wanted to kind of bring up a bit I made back in the winter of last year and the reasons that I made the bet. So back in February, I put a $1000 on Georgia when the national championship at ten to one odds. And the reasons that I did that were, I kept on seeing this stuff coming out from the Georgia team. That Jordan Davis coming back, hashtag unfinished business. Devonte Wyatt coming back, hashtag unfinished business. Samir white, James cook, the whole thing. And then the kicker was Dan landing, getting the offer to go to Texas and for a lot more money and his comeback was hashtag unfinished business. So I think that that was the reason I placed the bet and I think that this is a different team for Georgia. I think you're right about that, Brett and herb street, coach Don and others have said it and it's too early to say what I'm about to say, but I'll say it. This team is starting to resemble the Alabama team from last year, which bought in. And I think somebody said that a minute ago and sometimes unique teams there are a lot of individual teams. There's a lot of good teams, but this team is different than anyone I've seen this year. And you go back to the game day, interview that Kirk her treat did with the defensive guys. And I read who exactly was in that interview, but those guys were in tune with each other. It was all about the team. It was not about me and just something different about this team that you just got to love. Yeah, I think the one thing about this Brett is will they be tested and how do they react when they are? That was always a question about Alabama last year. They really, you know, they were under a little pressure in the old miss game and the Florida game, but that was it, and will they be tested, though? I don't know. I mean, I think this week presents some issues, but there's still a huge favor. We'll try again. Trey, you're on the air, go ahead. Yes, sir. How are you, my friend? I'm going to drop my phone. Paul, great interview with coach done, and then I want to say, prayers out to mister hurt, his family. But Paul, we had another one in trash irrelevant phone calls from Jim from Tuscaloosa. He now knows more than Kirk harp street and Greg Mack Roy. And I don't think he's ever put a job strap on in his entire life, Paul. But what I want to get into, we're talking about this phone call that mister barber. Oh, yeah. I want to know, you used to be a journalist and reporter. When mister burns makes this phone call to dabo, could you please explain to me the welcoming committee and Tuscaloosa for dabo and the scene and tea town and what's your show would be like the next day because you used to do that kind of journalism and investigation and I'd like to hear your response to that. What do you think it would look like? No one thinks right. No one needs to tell me when Davos credentials are. We all know. He's one two national championships. So he's put together phenomenal program at Clemson this year, notwithstanding, but I have not heard many people lately. Maybe 5 years ago, four years ago, but I have not heard many people lately part of the inner circle of Alabama football, both former players, alums and personnel that works there. Who are that enamored with the idea that dabu Sweeney one day should be the Alabama coach? I think I'm not reacting directly to that caller. I'm just saying this is just in general. I don't think there would be that much enthusiasm for it. At the moment, could change. Thanks for the call. Appreciate it. Brad is in Atlanta. Hello, Brad. Hi Paul, sorry. It got Walla good. It's got hung up on. Had asked about the Tennessee George gang, but I wanted to follow up a little bit, and obviously I've been watching since then, Jim from Tesco, he just can not stand it if you don't follow all over Alabama. I felt that was an awesome interview. Very straightforward. Very factual and I just don't think that, you know, I say, there's a few folks in Alabama that if you just don't fall out over the team and the coach. Brad, we have to go to a break here in a second, but it's more about the game. When Alabama's leading by three touchdowns, everybody loves the announcers. Up against a break more to come, more of your phone calls at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5.

"Of many places, including the university of Georgia, coached on and it's great to have you back on the program. We saw you a couple weeks ago. We are in Athens and how are you? In person, one time, Paul, we had a good time and I'm doing great. Just enjoying this Georgia team and enjoying the fact that they're really playing well. Let me start with the quarterback position. And I think some people don't realize what a good quarterback you were. I think you were the MVP and the ACC couple years ago. Yeah, I was a long time ago, but certainly that's the one thing that everybody, I mean, you can walk into any place in town that people recognize you, and they're going to ask you about are we playing the right quarterback or all that? Whoever Kirby's playing, that's who I like. I think both these guys really bring a lot to the table and you got to give a lot of credit when JT went down. He was ready and he took the bull by the horns. And I saw today, Paul, we're stetson Bennett, is the leading quarterback in the country on average running and passing what I mean is when he runs the ball or and passes the ball. He has a better average than any quarterback in the country. So that's pretty impressive. Let's talk about maybe it will be necessary this week. Maybe you won't. Tennessee is explosive, but let me skip ahead of this week because this is a game that some Georgia fans are a little uncomfortable about because of what hindon hooker has done and what the Tennessee offense has been able to do under Josh hypo. Yes. The first thing I want to do is make sure that I just have a lot of credit. I mean, I've known him since he was a quarterback in Oklahoma. And he did a really good job coaching at Oklahoma and kind of things went south a little bit. And they brought in Lincoln Riley, but he's really done well with his career. He moved on to Utah state and then did a good job at the Missouri and then Central Florida, but he inherited the situation where a lot of these kids are transferred and he just didn't have a very big squad and he brought in a couple of guys like hooker and some other guys and really got a good coach and staff and that's just been remarkable. The job they've done and, as you said, they're very explosive and they can make things happen. And they're running that art browse up and it's where it spreads out the receivers almost line up out of bounds. So it's going to be a different type of ball game for Georgia to the fan than what they've seen. And it's always different for everybody, but kudos to Josh hyper and his staff, but you want me to break the game down. I'll just tell you because I bring this up coach because we look at we look at Georgia's defense and we think man, they're the best we've ever seen. But I know you, you look at things analytically. You just don't look at the stats. So as you see this offense of Tennessee versus Georgia defense give us give us the coaches breakdown well, the first thing you got to do defensively is getting lined up. They run such a rapid plays and they got quick calls and their kids know how to get lined up and run plays extremely fast. I mean, less than 12 seconds. They're already snapping the next ball. So you got to kind of like coaching against the wishbone and practice from the standpoint. You got to teach your scalp team kind of get lined up and execute. So you can get a feel for it when you get into the state, but certainly you're not going to do it like hypo and his team does. And I think that hurt them early in the year. They Tennessee we're stopping themselves because some of their players didn't get lined up right and they were making penalties on themselves, but recently, you look at them against Alabama and then last week against Kentucky, wow. I mean, it was awesome. So that's one thing you got to do is get lined up and then you've got to have a good pressure package, which we have. I mean, you got to get after hooker. He got sacked 5 times last week, but he's so elusive and can run. He can really keep the sticks moving when they're not making big play. So you've got to stop him from that. But the real recipe, I think, is keeping them off the field. I mean, their defense is good. They got big Gaza upfront. They twist around and move on a Rodney Garner guy to coach for me does terrific job get those guys in and out of the game? They play about ten guys on the front. So I would say get your team lined up, put pressure on the quarterback and play deep enough that you don't give up those easy plays. That's one thing Kirby has done this year. A lot more zone for Georgia than you've ever seen because we've got some new guys back there. And then the other thing would be offensively just when you get the ball in score position, get some points and get up on these guys and make them play from behind. Talking to coach Jim donnan and coach there's so many things happening in the SEC that I would be remiss if I didn't ask you about a few of them. Let's start at the university of Florida from your seat, and you watch games, you break them down. What is going on there? You know, I hate that for, I mean, from a coach's perspective, you always say, when gossip is a job, I mean, there's families involved and, you know, it's just a tough situation. I don't know enough about what's going on to really be giving the right info. I would guess coach spur you're probably could talk about them like I do against about Georgia, but I do feel like once that LSU game happened, things just didn't look good for that Florida program. And then they kind of self destructed against us. And then last week, just really couldn't do anything against South Carolina. Big win for South Carolina, but you know, that's the team that had 11 yards and three quarters against Texas a and M, I mean, and then all of a sudden they ran up down the field like they had both Jackson the other night against Florida. So I think he had to make some changes. He's probably thinking about it and at this point, I really feel like that one thing that he did will help him I believe is he got a veteran coach there and Paul Pascal only who's coach a lot of football. He actually was his coach when he was a GA at Syracuse coach Mullen was. So I think Paul give him some steady advice there and then Christian Robinson is an excellent young coach or terrific recruiter, probably has good rapport with the kids and they'll really respond to him. But it's definitely a situation that worries you when a team like Florida who last year was planned for the NCC championship is now has 5 losses on the season. And then four last year, coach Jim, Donna with his coach. Let me ask you about Alabama for a second. At ozer on double down on his comments after the game, he said, I feel like we were a better team than Alabama. Some would dispute that. But where is this Alabama team in your mind right now? Well, you get your honor and his team and his staff, a lot of credit, they were a wounded team. They went in there and took a lot of chances. They did a good job, you know, fake punt, the Alabama center got hurt and they really were kind of discombobulated on the running and passing game and lucky to get out with a win because all of us know LSU's down there on the 7 yard line with a chance to go ahead. But as far as Alabama, I mean, I'm not going to share any tears for him now because I know what you're all capable of, and I think a team that really has you can't just be a dominant team every year. I mean, to lose all the players they lost on offense and have some of the injuries they had on defense. I mean, you know, that's just the way it goes, but they're going to fight off here in the next couple of weeks too because they got to play the iron bowl and just like we lose Saturday every game SEC's cop, man every week. You got it seems like you finished one and then the expectation like when I was coaching in Oklahoma, I mean, you got to win every game. I mean, if you don't win every game, you're a failure. So that's just the standard at Nick is set up, but I will say this. If you look around the country and you look at the teams in the top ten of that poll, we had last night..

So President Biden came against today and said the following that no, it's Well because An unemployed American cannot turn down a suitable job to take federal unemployment benefits. Okay? Maybe not initially. But what about all the people who were told were laid off when restaurants were shut down? Is one thing to claim unemployment When you're not unemployed. It's another thing to not go out there and actively pursue getting another job. And if Joe Biden thinks for one minute that people who are getting paid twice as much to be unemployed or out there, actively looking for another job, Sanchez the unemployment benefit is the enhancement. You know, seeing $300 a week this coming from the feds, It's the stimulus checks that air coming. It's one thing when you need it's another thing when it's just shoved in your face.
