Or she's director of D.C. ministry, which isn't an extension of Christian group liberty council, which is, of course, a very conservative group. It sounds like it. And they have her little ministry has an office right behind the Supreme Court building. They are there to do activist Christian work. That is that they are conservative Christian activists, and this woman believe not knowing that she was being recorded. "Dennis, how are you today? Thank you well. I have to tell you, I love your show. I've been following you since religion on the line, which is quite a long time. Full disclosure, I'm vaccinated. I'm a Republican. I'm against all mandates. And I have no problem with your approach to COVID. However, I'm a statistics person. I'm a math person. And I was listening to your show yesterday, you were talking about Sweden. And in looking at the statistics, I'm not, they are certainly much better than the United States. But I'm comparing them to the other Nordic countries and I'm including Iceland and they're although that's a very isolated island by itself. And it seems to be that their death rate per million people is taking the best country next to them, which is Denmark. Their death rate per million is at least three times worse than that. So I'm not sure that we could call them successful compared to the neighboring countries. That's all that I wanted to say. Right. I thank you for your call. I will respond. I always note that that, I think I did yesterday that people compare them. I'm almost certain I said it yesterday. People compare Sweden not to other countries, but only other countries that are considered Scandinavian Denmark and Norway and to the extent that Iceland is considered Finland is not considered a Scandinavian country but people will often use Finland. That is absolutely correct. I don't know exactly why that should be the one criterion. The great majority of deaths in Sweden took place in nursing homes, the Swedes acknowledged that. In fact the Swedes make that known, they're not proud of it. It was a nursing home problem that they had not addressed. And I am no youngster, and I fully acknowledge that as tragic as every death is at any age. There are there are levels of tragedy. When you have lived beyond the life expectancy, you are blessed. But it is not the same tragedy as a 50 year old. It's just. Everybody listening knows that. That doesn't mean people are expendable. It means that we use our brains to understand what is a tragedy and what is sad. To me, and I'd like to know if Sweden allowed it, I don't know. I'd like to know how many countries did what the U.S. and Canada did. And a forced people to die alone. That to me is worse than death. Death rates are one indication of a tragedy. But pain inflicted deliberately by medical authorities. You can't be with your dying father. Because you can't enter the hospital. Even with a mask on, so the people working here can wear masks, that's fine, but you can't. If you told any person in a hospital who was ill with COVID, during the worst of the pandemic, just want you to know that if your daughter visits you that will increase the possibility of your dying. What do you vote for? Everybody would vote to have their daughter visit. Because they know they're in bad shape to begin with. Anyway, back to the statistics. Sweden compared to all countries in the world, including a vast number of European countries, ranks number 54 in deaths per million. Also, what is particularly important is now we're living now, that is the nature of the human existence we live now. And they're not having any deaths. There, as I mentioned yesterday, they're in the bottom half of the world tied with half the world that is not having any deaths now. But Denmark is having death, the other countries around Sweden are having deaths now. They're not. Sweden, Sweden did not lock down. Did not mandate masks, nothing. They allowed normal life. Kids went to school for a year. Kids under 16. I can't believe I'm saying it, but God bless Sweden. Because it provided the one test case of non panic in the human species last year, and this year. Some priests believe that because Biden supports abortion rights, he shouldn't be allowed to receive Holy Communion. And now some American bishops are moving to make that a policy. Not only for the president, but for other Catholic politicians who also support abortion rights. We're going to talk through this with Reverend Stan to alot. He's a priest and an associate professor and Catholic studies at DePaul University in Chicago, and he opposes this policy. Welcome. Thank you. So I want to start with today's news. The Vatican wait on weighed in on this with a warning to the head of the U. S conference of Catholic bishops. What did they say? The sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which regulates Catholic doctrine, beliefs and practices globally. Come on with. I mean, I would say policy and advice that what is needed today is dialogue with Catholic Pro Choice politicians. So one the Vatican is saying is that they should not rush into making sanctions and the weaponizing the sacraments, but rather they should seek for dialogue. Okay, so the Vatican wing and saying slow down If I could take your time with this. How does that square or not? With what? The pope himself What Pope Francis has said the pope. You remember the famous expression off the pope many years ago, I said, Who am I to judge? The pope is telling us that Holy Communion is not a trophy that you grant to a champion. The pope is the reminding us that we shouldn't weaponize the sacrament is not the role of the bishop toe make draconian laws, but rather to inform the conscience to teach people on, then tow, allow the A teaching toe form the hearts and minds off people in their dialogue. So let me jump in and try to figure out how this might Play out. We know The U. S conference of Catholic Bishops has scheduled a meeting. We know it's next month, June 16th. They have plans to vote on a document about this. What? Where do you expect that to go? I will expect that given the polarization, unfortunately within the ranks of the B shops, giving also this cautionary note from the Vatican that the bishops will not proceed in coming up with that kind of policy. Which I think given the fact that we in the mist of a pandemic, why should people just suddenly think that this is the most central issue to address and then I was going to ask? Is this issue front of mind for American Catholics? Is this the priority in a lot of churches? I think that what most Catholics are worried about, and I think most of the Christians and other people of faith is that for the last one year, they have not been able to go to church. Experience community. I think people are worried that many people are still dying and suffering from Cove. It 19 on most important way. I must say this as a Catholic priest. It worries me that when we talk off abortion, we only hearing the voices off an all male hierarchy on May leadership. We are not talking about the experience of the women who have suffered from abortion who had to make that choice. Who's there, carrying the burden off the choice? I like to hear more of the voices of women about this issue. One more question, which is just the very basic one, Whatever the U. S conference of Catholic bishops decides next month Is it binding or do individual churches have some leeway? Because we should stress? It would be very where to turn someone away from communion, right? Yes, definitely. You know, the law in the Catholic Church is that it is the local bishop who regulates the practice and administration of the sacraments in his particle, a church. So in this case, the cardinal archbishop of Washington, D. C. Cardinal, Wilton Gregory has already made it clear that Biden is welcome to receive communion. Churches in the diocese. It stars my friend here Kenneth Branagh who also directed it. And did God knows what else, you know? Can I think it's kind of amazing? We were talking a little bit before about when I first encountered you which was you playing a Henry the fifth onscreen, which he directed as well as started Oscar nominations for both things. This was a Henry who was just filled with youth and vigor and was going to take on the world and everything and it was. This fresh vigorous approach to what Shakespeare is. And now, you're playing Shakespeare himself in his later years has that make you feel on usual. Unusual very privileged. Because the in a way, you know, Henry the fifth was a it was an amazing opportunity to have as a young actor, and a sort of virgin filmmaker and really was any possible because there were lots of other equally sorts of adventurous maverick figures in terms of the produces and an all sorts of other people who were taking a chance on me.
