"So when it came time to go to college. Brennan had several options on the table but because of his relationship with Dr David Anderson once stood out Dr Anderson went from Moody and he basically seen. Except if you go to moody than our Church will cover your costs that you can do it and so I wanted to follow in his footsteps he had kind of obviously been shaping was and so I went off to be Biden's state which I thought at the time by the way was a progressive school Because I was looking at places like Bob Jones University and Pensacola Christian College. Before I consider Moody when he first arrived at Moody Bible College Brandon Endon Self identified as a kind of racially reconciliation oriented neo Calvin s which were two things. That didn't really come together very well because the whole neo. CALVINISM looks pretty white. But I entered into Moody and that EPA time with kind of that was the ethos instituted it was primarily this neo calvinism John Piper Martyr score shipping school. That also have this passion for racial reconciliation because of where it's located in downtown on Chicago and so I got there and I was aligned with everybody in my first year. Seems really great but what happened. Was I think Moody has probably one of the worst Plans if you're going to create a Bible College I don't recommend putting it in the heart of one one of America's largest cities because I would hear all of this conservative theology In the classroom and then I'd walk out the door door of Moody Bible Institute into the Hustle and bustle of the city of Chicago. And My Yala G with confronted with reality and they didn't the line so I went into for instance Holy Name Cathedral remember so vividly Catholic Church down the road community. Group of my roommates went down. We went to that church and we had believed that the Catholic Church was the great horror of Babylon and that the Catholic Church which this Evil False Gospel promoting putting institution but when we went into Holy Name Cathedral and sat down and watched the priests perform the mass. We were all taken back by the power of the spirit beheaded moving through him in the love and the truth that we felt in that environment that archaeology said. Shouldn't that shouldn't be happening. And we went down down to demonstrate in Chicago which is a largely Muslim community. And so there would be these loud calls call to prayer. That would come on and everyone everyone would stop and Bowel and Trey and our theology told us they were worshipping a false God in this demonic and yet my experience of watching thing that witnessing that was it was beautiful it was profound. I felt God in that and so that kind of experience of theology in reality clashing clashing over and over again really began to cause me to go on the journey of asking questions and I did it probably in an unwise unwise way but I decided to do that publicly and so I started a blog and started a podcast in my second year at Moody and then that podcast also became a radio radio show on campus radio where I was interviewing well known heretics from Moody's Perspective People like n t right people like Brian Mclaren people like Rob Bell Bring the mine talk to them and just because I was having those conversations. I got called into the Dean's Office six times over the next three years And was told that I need it to answer basically a theological assessment to prove that. I wasn't a heretic. Say They saw because I was associated with these people at the time for instance Brian McLaren had just married his gay son and that was big news in the Christian world. And when that happened they called me and said you had this guy on your podcast. Do you affirm what he's doing. Because if you do you not aligned with our theology and you will be expelled And every time honestly -nology hadn't shifted at all so I was still aligned aligned with movies theology but this response of fear from them started making me question whether or not They they were on the right side of the issues because I remember i John that perfect love Casado fear and that God is love and so I started really wrestling with with this concept that if we were really on the side of God how could we be so afraid of everybody else because that seems so contradictory who Jesus was and so what. The Gospel teaches us about how we should engage in the world and so it was really those conversations across the divide again that I began to chip away at my evangelical faiths and push me towards a more progressive worldview primarily because Moody kept responding bonding with fear with threats and so by the time I got some senior year. I was literally skating on very very thin ice and I had also by senior year decided to come out as struggling with my sexuality to a couple of professors And again at this time I still thought it was. I thought it was send to be gay and I was trying to live. Holy whatever that meant about time And at the beginning of senior year I got called back into the Dean's office and they said Brandon We're really worried about the trajectory that you're on and so in order for you to graduate We're going to require that you go through a year of this thing that they called healing prayer which is a mild version Asian of conversion therapy And they said you need to meet with the professor once a week. You'll confess your struggles and your sense to her and then Essentially we would go through this prayer practice where we would ask God to go into my childhood. Find the areas where dysfunctional relationships with my mom or my dad and and to heal those because the whole concept of repair to therapy is based on the idea that the reason someone's gay is because they had an abusive father in over attach mother and that makes a kid so for my senior year. I went through that process in earnest to try to heal the broken sexuality that I believed I had and the pressure continued to intensify from other professors and from the community at large at Moody. And I literally truly like it. It sounds ridiculous but I would walk down the hallway to go to the cafeteria and students would literally yell heretic across the Hallway it was a crazy environments and again all of that just kept pushing the further away from evangelical because it none of that that seemed to reflect Jesus and so when I graduated by the grace of God I went back home to Maryland and expense the next year. You're just really wrestling whether I wanted to be a Christian at all whether I wanted to pursue this calling to be a pastor at all because it didn't seem really worth it If this is what what Christianity was. I couldn't be a part of it. After a year in Maryland Brandon decided not to leave the Christian faith but he knew that things had to look different expert of life got really crazy. But I'll I'll zoom through it. I got to DC I left my house in Maryland cited. I needed to not live at home with my parents anymore and move moved down to DC and got a random job offer from the log cabin Republicans of all people. Okay and again this time still straight identified And I just have had my blog my podcast and they came and said. Hey we're starting. A new organization called evangelical marriage equality. And we need a straight straight White Progressive Evangelical to represent that organization. Shouldn't do you want the job. And I said yes even though I had no clue what any of that Matt or what I was doing And so I took Johnson Robison national spokesperson and a month. Later we had an OP ED in Time magazine announcing the launch of this new organization and the next day the southern baptist. This convention took out another op. Ed in Time magazine calling me a heretic in our organization Dangerous to family values of our nation and and People like El Molar. Did podcasts. Calling the out by name as a heretic and so this only also liquefied again on this idea that any time we present evangelical with something that was slightly different than what was the party line. They responded with such fear and so that was happening at the same time. I also took another job with a left-wing progressive organization called face.
