"And they say there's an entire industry to help them appear less Asian on their college applications. I mean, it really seems like using one group against other groups. What did you hear in that argument Dahlia? That was an argument that was advanced in the Harvard case, which was the second case that was heard that by giving racial preferences to certain minorities, were in fact harming other minorities specifically Asian students, one of the things that Seth waxman, who argued on behalf of Harvard said was there's not actually a lot of evidence in the record that there is meaningful harm. This is something that happens at early stages and that of course it's deplorable to ever harm any race at the expense of the other. But I think one of the themes that we saw pulled out throughout, again, the argument is that even considering race on anyone's part for any reason is always going to diminish us and always going to be in violation of the idea of a colorblind constitution. Well, the liberals on the court did speak up talking about the value of diversity. Here's just a Selena Kagan. If you're a hospital and you serve a diverse group of patients, is it super important to you to have a diverse set of doctors? I don't know that the evidence about the diversity of doctors and as Cameron Norris attorney for students for fair admissions, so Dolly, can you tell us more about this line of questioning you heard from the liberal justices that went back to the Fourteenth Amendment defining black Americans as equal under the law we only have about ten seconds Dahlia. No, I think that the idea is always that to have a diverse society to have a better army, better police force, better courts. We need diversity that's been valued for almost 5 decades. That's the thing that is on the chopping block and it's clear schools will be less diverse if affirmative action goes away. The minority argument at this point on the court Dali lithwick writes about the courts and the law for sleep. Thanks for joining us dalia. Thank you for having me. Well, to the midterms now, nearly 1.3 million North Carolina voters have already cast ballots in person and by mail, for next week's elections, that's about a 150,000 more than early voting numbers for the same period in 2018. North Carolina public radio's rusty Jacobs caught up with some of the voters who will determine the outcome of tight races for Congress, the state legislature and the U.S. Senate. Holly springs is a suburb of North Carolina's capital city, Raleigh, the residential area in wake county, is part of the 13th congressional district, where race is seen as key to whether or not Republicans rest control of Congress from Democrats, and it's where Ben men went on the first day of early in person voting to cast her ballot in this year's midterms. Not so much voting for anybody, but more voting against certain ideas that I don't agree with. A registered Democrat, Nguyen said she typically only votes in presidential cycles but felt compelled to vote this year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that overturned roe V wade end up ended 50 years of precedence protecting a constitutional right to abortion. Nguyen's 21 year old daughter Lauren also voted early. She's a biology major at UNC Chapel Hill and registered unaffiliated. Most of my Friends are quite progressive and quite female. So we all, for the most part, agree, and we were quite upset with the overturning of roe V wade. Their views should be music to the years of wily nickel, the Democrat running against Republican Bo Heinz in this swing congressional district, abortion has been a prominent issue in the 13th district race with nickel supporting a woman's right to choose and Heinz opposing abortion except when a woman's life is in danger and in some cases of rape and incest. 19 year old Justin friendly cast his ballot at a one stop site in the nearby wake county suburb of fuquay varina. He's a student at wake technical community college and he cited his opposition to abortion rights as key to his coming out to vote. There's no regard for the human life. That's lost there. For Ed ward, a 67 year old retiree and registered Republican, inflation and the economy top his list of concerns. Ward was sporting a T-shirt for the Holly springs food cupboard, where he volunteers helping distribute supplies to people in need. We see greater need now than we did a year and a half ago. Also at the Holly springs polling site was corinne mosa and her 8 year old daughter. Moses said she recently changed her registration from Democrat to one affiliated because of how rancorous partisan politics has become. The party system in our country is really detrimental and needs to be

"When have you read that? The guy that bolt mine because he wanted to put it in his house. And I told him I was like, man, that is a lot of heat coming up. I think a lot of it. He got under his house, reinforced. This is a long story, but I'm gonna cut it down. He lost the hot tub on the way to his house after he picked it up for me. It slid right off the trailer. And anyway, he gets home, he reinforces the house. He's got a lot of water. He puts in a fan. It's an old house, you know? So he puts in almost like a commercial grade type. Exhaust fan. Exactly. So he just sucking it out of there, but you've got to have some air coming back in there. So you have to have some sort of a liver vent. It pulls that negative pressure. It was pulling back at the end. Now it's going to go. So that is one thing about putting it inside. Outside of the port. My porch is a little un level. You know, because it's a black gorgeous ball and like his poster. But it's on concrete. Don't concrete. Definitely don't concrete. So if you're going to come in and put it on a deck, and these reinforcements, especially get heavy. Because some of them are 7 foot by 7 foot and some of these things are toil food by 12 foot. That's a lot of water. How much is it going to weigh and make sure you do it correctly? Well, you've got to do. So there are a couple of things to think about. You've got to think about your electricity. That was the hardest part. Yeah, think about your power, how you're going to run this motor in this heater. They've got two different ways you can do it. One, if you have a slot in your outside record box, which I would recommend putting it on there. Yeah, it's going to be a 50 amp GFI breaker. So you can ruin your number, whatever that thing calls for. Like I read number 8. Over to a regular AC disconnect box because since the line's already GFI, they don't have to have it. And then the hard line and then they're going to make sure you use all the right connections and all that stuff. But they got another thing called a spa box that I couldn't find and I barely found this burger for a good electrician buddy of mine in the head one. But they got a spa box. You can run power from your record box over to the spa box and the spa box itself is GFI. Nice. So there's an easier way to go. You can usually get them from your big box store. But regular breaker on your panel and then the spa box and the hook it up. Yeah, and I'm telling you folks, if you're going to do something like this, you've really out of your league on a DIY on the wiring. I really recommend you get an electrician to come in and get that thing wired because you could really, you miss that up. You could really have some problems. Well, think about it. Any time you add electricity to a water borne device, like a tub, you do need a problem. You have to have this is what I found. You have to have a ground rod within ten foot. Of that hot tub. Even though you're burger box is grounded. You still have a very long run. So it takes time to get there. Pull equipment. Anything out like that. And we do pool inspections. I was at a pool inspection for a home inspection last week. And they had a light in the pool on just a regular 20 M break. I'm not swimming in Apple. All right, let's take another break here. We're still looking to hear from you about your home improvement projects. Gwen and Holly springs were going to be getting to you in just a moment. Don't go anywhere. And.

"O Jimbo one 8 6 6 5 O 5 four 6 two 6 as we talked to George ingle the author of miserable at work Why You don't have to be Okay Scott in Lamar Iowa calls in hello Yeah good evening gentlemen I just had a thought maybe a guest could speak to you mentioned about how employers are may end up saving a lot of money renting less office space and there would be savings and a lot of ways but isn't the reverse also sort of true how much money the employee is saving and they're saving on gas they're saving on ward girl a lot of people may well be saving on day care and meals And if nothing else just a lot of time not having to commute They may be getting in an extra hour of family time every day Man there you go All right George what about that So Scott that's absolutely spot on Well spotted there So that is where they're getting some of that extra stress relief right They have a little bit more money in their pocket So that's always a relief They're able to spend more time with their family and do a little bit more fun things And so that is absolutely a contributing factor to where some of that extra productivity is coming out that was pre-pandemic for those that have those more office type jobs All right one 8 6 6 5 O Jimbo one 8 6 6 5 O 5 four 6 two 6 has been go to Ed in Holly springs North Carolina Hi Hi jumbo How are you doing tonight Well thank you Good Yeah the question I have is like with all the people not returning to the workforce working from home and whatnot but also the people who decided that they just want to stay at home that's going to affect our social security down the line and then because they're not no longer paying any taxes into that So what's the long-term prognosis for that Well if you're working you're paying in aren't you But I mean the people who decided that they just aren't going to go back to work they're not paying into it anymore Well yeah if they can get by with that what about that George It's social security We're going to say in danger but it's been in danger for decades Right Yeah it really has the when the stimulus basically stopped there wasn't uptick in the number of people that sought jobs out So that has kind of returned I believe the last number I saw and I haven't looked at it in a good bit unemployment is fairly far down A lot of people have gone back that we're going to go back Are there still to your point there are still quite a few that haven't But I don't know that the long-term effect on system security is really going to have a play given inflation will probably have a greater play to that than the people that didn't return That's going to drive a lot of people back to work isn't it inflation Yes so there are quite a few companies that are actually banking on that There was a Reddit column that I happened to see talking about a rather well-known restaurant chain and a manager for the chain the actual company was making some comments around this point and saying that they wouldn't have to offer as competitive wages because people are going to want to come back and get more hours because they won't have a choice because of all the inflation and the reason the rise in gas prices Here is Gary in Franklin Kentucky good evening I got a question I want you to get your thoughts on this very risk man Are we quick as I can I'm working for I was working but I had a 5 days of vacation coming I put in for three and I worked two days and I took three days of vacation where the next week I go to go back I had two more days of vacation and I called in to see if I could get in and plus I had a 40 hours of what they call a leap without leave without pay or what but I called it a shit if I could get that in because I was a sick for a couple of days and the ladies college didn't she would get an in for me With my check was a little bit short on the Friday and I went to work to see if we was working Saturday because if you don't get your arms in during the week I let you work Saturday for a straight time when I get there and they tell me I have three days of no call no show like I call them money and Tuesday but then it got on a computer where I coward and request my stuff in the lady company when I called her she would get it in for me but then when I go in Friday to see if I could work Saturday if it was working they told me that they had me down for three days with no car no show and that's what I'm here today so they took that one away and had two and someone was post call me Friday evening where no one cared I go to work Sunday morning I clock in and everybody do accept me like I'm strange and what am I doing here and they're saying I know I'm terminated from last Friday but no one ever called so many different interesting I'm not sure that our guest was in a position to help you Gary although I hope you find help but George Gary the best I could tell you is to speak with an employment attorney because that sounds very odd and I also am sorry that you were terminated Yeah absolutely Bill who was listening in Missouri somewhere Yeah Hey Jim How are you guys doing We're well thank you.

But where did this tradition begin? Why do we deck our halls with boughs of Holly every December? What does Holly represent in the celebration of Christmas despite its association with the Christmas season? Holly did not get its name from wholly the name of the plant is very similar across both traumatic and Latin languages and its origin is probably the proto Indo European root word Cal, which appropriately means prickly or to prick a proto Indo European being the ancient base language of all Indo, European languages even in ancient times. People took advantage of the sharp ends of hollies leaves druids hung it on windows and doorways to fend off evil, which is spirits before. Holly was hung in houses to accompany Christmas trees, it was considered to be a sacred plant by the. Druids well, other plants wilted in winter weather, Holly remained green and strong. It's buries a brightly colored red in the harshest of conditions. The druids regarded Holly as a symbol of fertility. Eternal life thought to have magical powers in Riddick. Lor cutting down a Holly tree would bring bad luck. In contrast hanging. The plate in homes was believed to bring good luck and protection. Holly was also thought to protect homes against lightning strikes Romans associated Hollywood Saturn. The God of agriculture and harvest and duct the halls with its bows. During the festival of saturnalia early Christian calendars, Mark Christmas Eve as template exhorted her meaning churches are decked though, supposedly saturnalia celebrators didn't allow some Christians to hang bows and honor of Christmas Christians adopted, the Holly tradition from druid Celtic and Roman traditions and its symbolism changed to reflect Christian beliefs today. Christians may consider highly symbolic of Jesus Christ in two ways, the red berries, represent the blood that Jesus shed on the cross on the day. He was crucified. Legend states that Holly berries were originally white. But that the blood Christ shed for the sins of humankind stained the berries, forever, red hollies pointed leaves symbolized the crown of thorns placed on Jesus's head before he died on that cross. Holly is known as Christ Dohrn in German, meaning Christ Owen, both of these symbols are meant to serve as a reminder to Christians of Jesus suffering. But they aren't the only stories tying Holly to Jesus one claims that the cross on which Jesus was crucified was constructed of Hollywood. Another says that Holly sprang up from his footsteps less. Common symbolism includes the hollies white blossoms, representing purity. And the idea that if the Holly used decorate a home for Christmas as prickly. The man of the house will rule for the coming year. But if the whole used is smooth the woman will rule traditionally Holly has been associated specifically with men for whom it was considered to bring good luck and protection, the female counterpart to Holly being Ivy. But let's take a closer look at the science behind this legendary plant Holly botanical name, Alex Aquaphor. Liam is a shrub or tree found primarily in North America Europe and Asia with hundreds of species of the plant ranging from short shrubs, two meters, high or about six feet tall trees up to forty meters high or about one hundred and thirty feet, it's known primarily for its bright crimson, berries, and prickly. Green leaves holies can be evergreen, meaning the plants glossy leaves are on the tree year round or deciduous. Meaning the leaves fall off seasonally white flowers bloom in may or June and with help from insects like bees, the female flowers produced those characteristic berries. Like its holiday companion mistletoe hollies berries are toxic to humans resulting in nausea and severe stomach aches when ingested not. So for some animals, though, berries are a vital source of food for birds such rushes and blackbirds. Although the scarlet berries are famously prominent in homes for the holiday season, they're not the only useful part of hollies, the berries are poisonous. But the green leaves have been used in herbal remedies for centuries for various medical conditions like dizziness fever anti tension, though. There's currently little medical proof of the plan's effectiveness. Also Hollywood is hard and compact making it excellent for carving. It's sometimes use to make chess pieces and walking sticks.
