"White film to you and it was no surprise to discover that schrader had made it after conversation with pablo public off ski there are weird moments of almost hypnotic transcendence but at the center of it is that tortured god's lonely man character perfectly embodied by eastern hook i found it very powerful i found it had none of the called ridiculous theology that the the wrong with dominion prequel to the exorcist i've thought it had none of the nonsensical sensational claptrap of the canyons which i hated it hard to believe it's by the same person that made the dismal doggy dog after i had reviewed the canyons very poorly to terrible film a terrible film without redeeming features push rate wrote on the internet what happened my last knowledge of mark mode was that he was a serious film critic now he seems to have transformed himself into a radio shock common tator not the sort of person to pass series judgment on others on not allowed to pass judgment others but i would say this this is the best film straight has made since auto focus is a very fine piece of work and i might it huge movie of the week i reformed beats the incredible 's how on earth confessed reformed the movie of the week over incredible it was you know he's a spur of the moment decision but i really liked first reform that i really liked incredible to as you know it's criticism is not a binary thumbs up from down medium no but it was in this case and you got the wrong film there i tell you i know i won't have i reformed feeling so utterly miserable and you come have incredible feeling wonderful but here's the thing i really really loved incredible i really really enjoyed it first reform strata has made so many bad films recently that to see him make something good is was was just i thought you know a treat and to see him make something that actually reminded you what it was the alike tabet schrader before he started making terrible films dominion is beyond awful but the canyons just leaves it standing the canyons is the kind of thing that greg dot would have loved out of court back in the nineteen eighty s alexander gregory hippolyte greg brown note then no wally pfister yes i've told this story on how you don't know this fits the started life as a cinematographer fall greg dogs access movies making straight to video roddick thrillers and greg dot was the you know the the stanley kubrick of the straight video at roddick thriller fair enough i'll refer to previous shows catch up sometimes i think you don't listen to me i can't be right on the subject of skyscraper we i didn't read this the time because we will running out time henrik hanssen my daughter night ended the screening skyscraper hoping for mindless popcorn action unfortunately it didn't deliver even on that level for movie that is clearly trying to be diehard in a building is in the building outdoors we'll be it misses the key field classics surprised diocese full of wellthoughtout reveals in reversals skyscraper might as well of written plot points in character motivations in big bold letters yes but it's it's a stupid film and that's the point and it's made by somebody who who understands that stuff it's rawson marshall thurber who's if you look back at his monger phy include central intelligence and dodgeball so it's not it's not john mccain in film it's a rawson marshall thurber film who's the first guy joe matanza die hard all right that one yeah that was hard in a building as it's known don't hold it's like donna hall in the building jordan ellison just come back from showing of diehard in china i mean skyscraper and thought i'd let you know that dwayne the rock johnson has managed to get away with it again despite having little or no chemistry with his would be wife and being made to deliver an awful lot of awkward dialogue concerning duct tape he manages to be the best thing in the film which has a few good set pieces and a plot as thin as tracing there is a bit in it when you remember that in the walk when when you man what's his name the guy the guy he's playing philip petite what's his name him going heavens like any hayme yes three names it'll come.

"As simon producing the tearing dwayne i know somebody else get somebody else on twitter said if it's bland the vanilla skyscraper but it isn't bland it's it's thirty by rawson marshall thurber has an awful lot of fun doing it and you know does understand comedy there are some effectively vertiginous sequences in which in order to get out this building have to crawl along very very narrow packed planks over great sort of fiery abc's there is twain sticking himself to the outside of buildings with gaffer in fact it's duct tape the whole film actually ends up playing like an advocate for duck tape because it does demonstrate that there is almost nothing in the world that cannot be solved with duct tape when he meets his wife the first question is have you got any duct tape with you at one point i thought oh they've you know they've forgotten the orson welles secrets but no they haven't because of course they had i really enjoyed it i mean it is complete nonsense it is hugely derivative it knows it knows the films that it's stealing from and it's having fun stealing from them there are very few people who could get away with this in the lead role ropy colon did say when we wrote rampage he said i'd like to see daniel day lewis pull off the trick of convincingly fist bumping with a sixty foot gorilla will frankly i'd like to see daniel lewis convince any pull off the trick of duct taping yourself to the outside of a fiery skyscraper and and he manages to get away with it and i i smoked all the way through because he's a very very likable star in the film is big dumb fun and one interesting point serious note for we get the first reformed i remember making documentary about disaster movie some years ago called hell underwater fire in the sky in which people took very seriously about the fact that in a post nine eleven world nobody would ever be able to make a towering inferno movie again i mean does show how everything is like local because this is so that this is what that is tearing funnel is die hard it's doing all of those with its tongue firmly and cheek it's got a reissmann's it's not meant to be taken seriously i've got fear of heights anyway and it worked for me and i enjoyed it it was stupid but i enjoyed it i reformed last week ethan hawke came on the show how much pull schrader how much more pulse rate it could first reform be here's a ex military chaplain whose son died in service after he encouraged him to sign up now works in this old church which is about of its two hundred fiftieth anniversary reconsecration he keeps a diary in which he writes unforgivingly about himself and it becomes apparent that he's writing because he can't praise i wish i could pray but the diaries where he pulls everything else but he also says the journal gives him no peace we see him sitting in a dark room writing with a bottle of whiskey which takes us back to what how pulled trader said that he used to right he is god's lonely man which takes us back to the script full taxi driver which is really the you know the thing that kick started his career and we see somebody suffering crushes a faith which very much recalls karasin the xs than that is not a crowbar because schrader directed dominion prequel to the exorcist and schrader and bill blatty actually got on very well despite you know different parts of the of the church they you know they had certain shared concerns amanda say freed is pregnant and comes him saying that her husband is obsessed with the echo decline of the world and his terrified about bringing somebody into this world and who says in twentyfifty his son will be thirty three and the world will be on the brink of destruction thirty three of course being significant age if you're talking about christianity the way the film is shot it's one three seven bucks frame it looks very very much like an always thinking of dryer and there was also think of either we mentioned either when you were talking about it with ethan hawke said to eastern hall it's a color film but it it looked like a black and.

"Now unless the cycle roster cycle i think no i had a mohawk here's a lot about you don't know you're ever you didn't miss anything oh yeah this one's electric traveling means it torque agatha hang you will be great i will be great and you will too we will be great fleeting and that's a clip from incredible to i'm delighted to say that one of its stars holly hunter is on the shallow holly how are you track fantastic it's very nice to see you and you've already taken a fancy to my glasses so which is a good start to any interview he's telling me they look to cut your they did look good on you as i think i think that's good you don't need glasses do i get reading yes rainy i'm sure we can go she ate a right so incredible to fourteen years after the incredible came along and became one of the jewels in the pixel crown just explain what we need to know about this before we take it any further well what do we need to know well i think that it is amusing that that that brad bird decided to pick the movie up like fourteen seconds after the original ended because you can only do that animation you can't do that real true that was kind of fun for us all and i think it's really fun for the audience to and it's a cool thing for for both of for the entire family because you had this child jack jack who is a revelation to his family he's he's the holder of many secrets that his parents you know discover through the course of the movie that i think is also kind of fun for the audience so we have helen and bob violet dash jag yes just reintroduce as it was fourteen years ago just remind us where we are at the start of this film well we are you know in in scotched in a battle with the undermine her who is a kind of an analog bad guy and the incredible are still illegal and then they really muck things up but the end of incredible 's part one so we entered the scene and they are still very much illegal and and there is a superfan who loves superheroes who wants to find a way to make them legal again and he relies on mrs incredible and her economy her natural economy her natural mr incredible tinge to you know make a mess of things and she doesn't so she's going to be the leader of making the supers legal again the key thing is is that last to go in this movie she is the first among equals it's your picture and it feels very prescient very topical of oakley this been pen for a while the mr incredible as back home and you're the one that's taken all the glory it's fun that she kind of has a room of one's own in this movie she's you know up fully autonomous she's allowed to be the real hero i think that was an idea that brad bird who created the incredible 's had immediately after the first movie was over he went i have an idea for the second movie but he didn't really want to he wasn't really into doing it immediately so this is a bit serendipitous because he started they started actually working on incredible to three or four years ago so this is a beautiful kind of piggyback ride on me two times up it's feels as though i don't know how long you've been working on it and i i'm you saw the script but part of you must have thought well this is going to play well you know all these all these stories exactly as you were mentioning there this is people will think this is a very timely movie well we we actually started working i started working on it a couple of years ago so none of this stuff had occurred so it really is kind of an amazing piece of timing that the movie you know it's incredibly advantageous for the movie but let's crate it's great for everybody to see a woman kicking ass and stretching and stretching she as a woman unbound isn't she she's unshackled in this film as mr incredible gets a few shackles which are enormously entertaining and many parents will laugh at the as he struggles to work out the maths homework particularly because they teach madsen the different way and there's stronger that's great but the last to go she's off the shackles are gone well it's also really fun to see.

"As good as sakaria oceans eight is at number three i enjoyed oceans eight more than a lot of people did i mean a lot of people thought oceans eight wasn't up to snuff but i thought it was funny than a lot of people gave it credit for at number two jurassic world fallen kingdom again i thought it was better than jurassic world i'm see i i think i disagree with you i thought drastic well was quite fun and exciting in a way that even though it had no toby jones in your eyes i think the fallen kingdom was little bit disappointing a really yes i'm afraid to tell you that okay you lights jurassic world yes that's what i said yes yeah no no what is your your address it will address i think so but i think that clearly but basically it's clearly it's a trilogy isn't it so they're teeing up for for number three that's what they do okay next one a number one is the first purge so the first purchase an interesting thing i mean i i have to say that it was old for me was the first purge is a fifteen get movie that i saw in a cinema in which the many people who i'm guaranteeing even fifteen years old and it's quite a top end fifteen and the interesting thing with the purge series is that for something which is basically kind of interesting all ball exploitation bmovie with linked to read halt which was when we last week they have managed to keep doing something slightly different with each one and although this brilliant it's not world changing jonah breaking or anything i did enjoy the first purge inasmuch as it was it was a politicized exploitation movie kind of runs out of steam way through but it's a quite like the fact that it's very very upfront about his politics about what it is about how it's selling it so what can you explain what basically stories when the purge is is brought in the purges very specifically brought in by a government as a way of doing a sort of form of ethnic cleansing it's nothing to do with releasing the tensions of it's a corrupt political world in which venal politics behind what appears to be a populist experiment but is in fact something i mean obviously as we all know from all the other films but it's just very very upfront about it and there are hints of john carpenter and that kind of thing corey he says the first perch struggles to find a balance between the horror and action set pieces the horror feels cheap with its abundance of lazy jump scares in the action whilst entertaining seems misjudged culminating in a d newman that propels any sense of plausibility out of the window it's undoubtedly the most satisfying installment in the franchise or the i'm not sure if that says much it's all i thought he wasn't enjoying it but then says all of them he's enjoyed that one the most okay fine yes i mean i don't think it's the best of them but i do i i found it perfectly satisfactory and when i saw i saw the night that opened which was a i think it was wednesday night and it was packed i mean like absolutely packed like full pipe the six o'clock screening on a wednesday and that's why it's that's number one number one move yes we as the first purge so it's twelve twenty four we talked holly hunter bat incredible to the other side of the news but other stuff is out as well okay so let's do pin cushion which is the debut feature the hebrew the debut feature for deborah howard who if i'm not mistaken was one of the screen international stars of tomorrow list which was the same list that you hope dixon leach was on the hope dixon each made the leveling which i jibes absolutely love i don't remember okay while in the same years jack thorne was in that same age it's it's it actually seems to be realistic genuine he does pick rising stars of the future so joanna scanlan lily newmark star as a sort of misfit mom and daughter they call each other daffy one dusty to they have teacups which dorothy dottie to written on mom lives in very very eccentric house and they're like china figurines and models everywhere in a buggy that she talks to as if it's a child and the daughter is looking forward to going to her first day at school because she's going to.

"Lowest of expectations came out pleasantly surprised by it get out milton harry made from engaging lead aloft easily more than six times the basketball action was really entertaining as was the interaction between the players sam green slow start setting up the film and giving it an american style slight sob story with a mix of awkward not funny humor eventually what follows is short scenes with each character setting up the team the highlight being shaquille o'neal the humor is good for those who follow in no basketball it shot well lots of color lots of noise are good santrac and the main star is unclear to himself the moral of the story for youngsters don't give up on your dream and when you get a shot at something don't pass it up a must watch basketball fans and hopefully this can inspire a few to start playing with is a low regarded sport in our country and you haven't seen it i haven't i'm going to try and catch it this weekend and that'll be uncultured number eleven so here's the box office top ten at ten it's yellow submarine the beatles yellow submarine the fiftieth anniversary edition it terrifying that's fifty years old animation is still very very interesting and very intriguing it's an all beatles project because of how much they were want involved in it and i tweeted a link to an interesting focused belted chris boroughs are confident in the solicitous sacristy i write following a fiftieth anniversary screening of the beatles psychedelic classic in a rare family outing i attended with my dad this is the perfect way to sit who saw the film age fifteen on its first release my nine year old daughter and my brother who watched the film with me on a taped off the televideos kids until it fell apart i suspect it's twenty five years since i last watched the film although the plot is undoubtedly bagging on since being little more than a loosely strung together series of setpieces the film stands up simply as a visual spectacle there the songs in remastered five point one surround brought out a whole new level of appreciation and dad's spotted a previously unnoticed ukulele i love that and the film.

"Three quarters i'm writing in the interest of medical science had here so it's a good monkey cage link to report a recent case of als took play i was on a very long flight to madagascar wherein stanley i pay to be the only mug lining your pockets through the use of your incredibly lucrative app all it could be said in favor of the flight was an excellent selection of films to choose from i took an early man and thought ragnarok and that it was a good opportunity to settle down to two uninterrupted hours of your podcast a few hours into the flight however i had a quiet sniffling to my right initially ignored this but then the snuffing became a kind of persistent repressed whimper anna turn to see my father who i don't think i have ever seen cry at anything ever holding back tears brought on by the last act of star wars the last jedi well i found this particularly strange since not any do i not recall the last jedi being particularly heart wrenching film but i had originally watched it beside my father in the cinema wave where he didn't find it till jerking but rather silly he said why watching the film on a tiny screen through tinny headphones would change his reaction so dramatically is beyond me as he later said he had a sniffle at the end of the post as well simply must be down to all's the post is quite emotional at the end the post is very emotional at the because it's that whole thing about triumphantly doing the right thing regardless of the you know what maybe and also the other thing but the post which is if you if you've ever worked in journalism that thing when when the press is start turning i mean spill but really does he does a brilliant job of you know making cinematic league citing the sigh of bunch of newspaper presses turning them in the paper's going up and doing that huge thing on the overhead arp loops which is just so especially don't get anybody i suppose you don't know the jurassic park moment you could say it is a dressy part moment that's exactly right yes that's right because he's got this the cup of coffee isn't it fibrous she's also the earthquake moment there's a moment in others quite when that happens anyway we've been great so far coming up the box of his top ten plus guests holly hunter i'm just holly hunter actually says incredible to this week next week mama here we go again is not out next week it we talked about it and he was talking about animals have pissed brosnan is going to be that next week yeah it is yes yeah i haven't seen here but you have an i'm just super excited that you're going to love it i absolutely now you so i am so excited about it i think you should go instead of going in your festival gear you should go in a spandex jumpsuit cut down to the navel and with high heels what do you think what do you think we can mock it up if you like oh for heaven's sake please don't include that in the poll cost because i just know that somebody out there on twitter will mock it up and i'm just i don't think i'm brave enough to take that take that take that take that and party are you ready are you ready to go i'm as ready as ever be excellent palo good afternoon didn't have a chance to tell you earlier but we're here for an hour just under now we had till one o'clock yes with our special movie show the longer bits and pieces will be on the podcast which you'd be available sometime the south to name any water what an hour it's going to be more is going to have your views of well what films are you doing i reformed we had ethan hawke on the show last week skyscraper the new dwayne the rock johnson movie and of course incredible to and you will be speaking to holly hunter who is the voice of elastic oh mrs incredible so we'll do that after twelve thirty craig mcclellan formerly of edinburgh currently of san francisco looks like we have the perfect storm this friday a new film from the rock and.

"It was just not that it was it was an amazing you know unforgettable visceral experience in deir ez metre jane campion a couple of times and i mean just looking back at at the success of the piano one in every respect a kind of feels to me like a miracle in a way again we talked about how big sick again we started their right like wow it's sort of like everything went right and that very rarely happens the same weight i think you could make the argument about the piano ago again like looking at the times were living in now with the piano be what it was today in the strange multiplex superhero wait in a climate is a room for a piano at the box office i don't know i say yes let's good i'm glad you you've arabic sal so but at the time were was its women look at moonlight and circuit call me by your name i mean these beautiful movies that surface and yet accolades and get acknowledgement now it's fair yeah but at the time did it feel like um again he's talked a little bit about that collaboration with jane but the way it cut through in the way it sort of became a cultural moments was that surprising at the time shot talic shocking and that there was no way that i could possibly have wh but i've i remember saying i don't think anybody's gonna see this movie but the few people who do are going to love it you know they will they will fall in love with the movie you know that will be intoxicated by it but i totally thought that no one would see the movie on than its uum outback went on us on stage show when an oscars screws to crazy story and it struck me like that's not a oneoff you weren't with the wad of young performers over over the years i don't know if that's if it's the have eminem rachel word jose think of thirteen obviously leia.

"Of two thousand two is no longer an englishman he's a he's an early solna 70s geez i didn't even know is on the 70s anyway just like howdy duty best actress from this year share for moonstruck glenn close for fatal attraction holly hunter for bar broadcast news sally kirkland from anna now i don't know if you know who sally kirkland is the only guys and i know hers from all the late night skin a max movies so it's weird that she was nominated for best actress but i have not seen anna and meryl streep for iron weed as i said he got jack nicholson a meryl streep should have been a better movie and you know you can see why they didn't win share one holly hunter should have won this year but i think there's little doubt yeah having seen both moonstruck and broadcast news and iron wedin fail attraction you know glenn close int glenn close is a good actor but it was a bit over the top of her portrayal on that any way yes i don't know why share one there must have just been love for share in the air at that time because yep where you just writing a song yeah my name is john i'm here to say a want to wrap to you in a share way yeah that's uh that's weird the moonstruck thing is so weird to me it is very low key and i mean i guess broadcast news is low key as a comedy but it's much smarter and air air anyway whatever serves was a fine performance from what rode right she was fine but holly hunter's was really nuanced than beer yeah.

"Absolutely i'm not even getting um but i i would actually genuinely like to see it go to lessen mental because i think she says she great and funding threats do who i think has dropped only oscar race i think it's a real shameless on just to film uh as such as the actress but the film holly hunter and the big sick seems to have dropped out almost entirely nantes may be a probably be will give screenplay not but i would have thought when i first solo film i thought okay here's someone who's going to get she's she's great array roman was great of film as well in fact they're all great we'll have washed again khamelnov giannis fantastic i'm a little surprised his name has been in the conversation a little bit more because yes he's plan itself but he does some pretty heavy lifting in that film but holy hundreds great but this year does seem to be the year best supporting actress of the the sharptongued mother and so maybe she was slightly beat now by the likes of allison janney and laurie metcalf who knows who knows anyway it's a as it it's an interest near and i'll be ferry for entry to see how dull pans out and golden the joost nominations are out in a couple weeks right i'll weeks time okay so let's talk about all that when it happens right what else we got to talk about oh we should mention that there's another ward seventy coming up the empire award the empire awards you're absolutely right and it's the one of the all want to go to and it's the one of the all wanna win and it's the only one i think can actually be legitimately used as a murder weapon it is very weighty surprisingly seats do i don't like you could do some damage with an oscar well depends what you do with it but two definitely uses as a bludgeoning tool jimbo how can people vote work and they folks and there's a there's a whole tana categories as european some people have been getting in touch me and you don't worry don't have the photo in every single can't agree if you don't have an opinion on best costume design or best short film you don't have to fill those bits in but where can they were can they do this they can vote at www don't all just wwe work www empire in london com slash.
