Interviewing Joe Darowski from The Protagonist Podcast

"Now on the one hand just doing it is the way you're gonNA learn so there's no other way to figure out how to do it other than saying I want to be podcast and therefore I will cast my name is Joe Girardi and I host the protagonist podcast previously I co-hosted we'll get into that I am sure we definitely will but I i WanNa know what got you into the podcasting game what made you become a podcast so in uncut somewhere in late two thousand fourteen one of my best friends from high school reached out to me and said delisted podcastone yes hide I listen to podcasts for years now and he's like I think I want to start one and I said I've batted around the idea starting one for a while and never committed and he's like let's commit and then within a month or two we had recorded our first episode and then a little bit after that we we've dropped the weekly episode of the protagonist podcast ever since What's never missed week which has been difficult at times there's always hurdles that come up in this case both my former co host todd Mac and I okay work in academia and he had a semester abroad in Spain and that was a little rough and making sure that we got a weekly recording done and we are back is to find work arounds dull recording when could but there were definitely times where we were starting recording very late might live and very early his time to make it work and we struggled through and and made it what is the premise of the protagonist podcast the premise of our podcast. I took a few rough drafts you know we've added a few ideas back and forth eventually we settled on What is the protagonist podcast where each week we talked about a great integrate story and we try and make sure that we mix it up our goal is basically we don't hit this one hundred percent of the time but but basically we wanted to talk about a character from a TV show a comic book a film and a novel every month so that's kind of the rotation we sprinkled some other things and we've touched on some other forms of storytelling podcast in there as well eventually we said well let's just talk about some great characters in great stories and we do try and mix it up between kind of the Classic Canon Story so we've definitely talked about some Shakespeare Jane austen with more pop culture stories we've done the planet hulk graphic novel which I think that Kinda grab bag at has its pluses and minuses I think it keeps some people will get up because they're just like that one's not for me interested but at the same time it might may expose listeners to things that are unfamiliar with it definitely has exposed me the host of the pot podcast to some stories that found from listener requests or things at todd suggested we have patrons at a certain level can request the topic to talk about and so in doing at this point we have released two hundred twenty episodes I think we've recorded about two hundred thirty 'cause we try ours is evergreens we try and keep a back catalog going there's just a lot of threat of material has been covered so one of my favorite things is finding a new story that I probably wouldn't across because of one of those suggestions saying Oh this is great I love this I'm so glad that I've been introduced to that I hope that we've been able to do that for listeners at some point as well I've been listening to your show for a few years now and I tell you that isn't that is one of the reasons why I it's because I get exposed to things that I never would have known about otherwise absolutely never would have known and it's a lot of fun there you and your your one hundred percent right there around Mike I don't even think I'm going to be interested in this and I I never deleted I just like okay I'm gonNA listen to that one finished these other ones and then and then I listened to what it was I should listen to that right away because I think I'm GonNa go watch that one of the first one that comes to my mind that you did a really deep dive on and it was it was an amazing episode food was watership down and I have no idea why because the cover has bunnies on it but I always thought that was like Mabel Battle Story I heard you talk about it was like Oh that's what I thought it was at all I well I didn't think it was I thought it was about sailor bunnies because as a child I caught five minutes of the animated adaptation and it was like this is very brief passage in the novel where they float down the river some but that's part and it's called watership down so I assumed this was all about seafaring rabbits for some reason and tell I'm pretty sure that one was a a patron request that came in and I started reading I was like Oh this is good it's not about see very rabbits and I got really into it and that was one of the episodes of kind of blew up for US view stick with podcasting while you know you kind of get the numbers that you expect for a number of downloads like you you kinda get your but then every once in a while you hit on something and it's like catching lightning in a bottle you're not quite sure why but it blows up and watership down for us like blew up on our facebook page we had thousands of likes on that one episode when we had done things that we would have thought would have a much larger fan base like we do Harry Potter episodes every year I'm you know we're we're going through one book per year kind of what we're doing we've done episodes on Star Trek and star wars and popular TV shows that you know do all right folks but watership down I think the combination of having a much broader and deeper fan base we knew seems like a lot of people from the comments we were getting on our facebook page like read this as in their adolescence or whatever and and just never forgot and it's stayed as a favourite and they've gone back to revisit it and a combination of that with no one talking about it on podcast whereas I think that's a big secret right there is everybody I everybody out there is talking about star wars and star trek and it's really hard to get really hard to get noticed on that but when you're when you're talking about something that nobody else is yeah I think that's I think that's something that really worth a magic happen yes absolutely and and also I mean it is a great book and it holds up to a lot of scrutiny and e easily we're able to do our our long discussion the episodes tend to be about an hour in length sometimes you know fifteen minutes sometime seventy minutes but about an hour is what we're shooting for and I delightful surprise both to say Oh this is something that's so good that I had never engaged with and I probably wouldn't have engaged with podcast and then also to discover that it kind of caught fire for a podcast and spread so you mentioned that it's a book that holds up to a lot of scrutiny and you you keep saying that you work in academia but let let let's throw this out there you're you're commercial that you have or that you had when it was you and todd were a couple of fan boys with PhD and that wasn't just that wasn't just fluff that was that's a fact correct yeah so I have a PhD Michigan State University in American Studies and at Michigan State they they have kind of a threat of HD? emphasis on American Popular Culture and my PhD dissertation was on race and gender in the X men comic books most of my academic publishing has either been on superhero comic books or on TV shows like the office or frazier or cheers so those are kind of my veins of research which todd has a PhD from Stanford and he studied the literature of Spain it's peninsula literature is what his PhD was and so you're taking this experience that you have with American pop culture PhD's literary background and you're diving into things like planet holck and and I always forget the name of it but it's the it's the youtube adaptation the Lizzy Lizzy Bennett Diaries yes yes that was a patron requested they've requested something that was more like classic literature I can't remember what it was now but then they switched at the last minute never mind I want to hear you guys talk about high school musical for an hour that was a fun episode as well and one of the strangest complaints I guess August complaints we've had because if you're going to be putting the material out there on the Internet do not just GonNa get bracelet with people who aren't fans of what you do but one of the biggest complaints we had is when we did an episode on Catcher in the Rye classic American Cannon Literature You know it's the signed in high schools or colleges all the time and both have literature you know backgrounds and and academics grounds but the person complained because we were making jokes while we talked about catcher in the Rye and that really upset them and in response we kind of Said look we we are GonNa talk about classic cannon things and we're also gonNA talk about light pop culture things and the combination that we think listeners or they are going to have is that we're going to try and living deep in the lighter pop culture things we're going to try and have some fun when we're talking about the classic deep literature you know the the cannon with a capital c ideas of literature and we want to always maintained that mix of having some good insights but also having some fun with the topics we're talking about not taking ourselves or the texts too seriously so you mentioned that you now hosted hosted the protagonist podcast by yourself todd todd went off he moved out of state and and pursued other projects projects yeah we made it for four years together he left on the two hundred episode he's been back a couple of times since then it's not like we had a big talk when he's gone he just said with with his career in studying peninsula literature is that I can't take the time commitment that this the maintaining this podcast is taking away from the studies I need for for his career he he just couldn't do it we we as he I mean he did it for four years so there's a lot of podcasters can't make

No word yet on when the area will be safe, again, how to resurrect an insulin assistance program that fell through the cracks at the end of the legislative session. "Then I think as well. That I wish people could stop being so worried about fitting in and actually want to fit out like that's a big thing to me is like why would you wanna be like anyone else? I love that. Like just be you. And and it took made that was such a big lesson that I learnt moving to the outside the world moving to this whole the city and trying to get involved with what you thought you needed to be in the know me and being like, oh like what kind of why am I meant to be one of meant to. Like, no, I don't I can cook the way I wanna cook. I can count on my hair off like after my wedding. I did that. And it was like the best thing, you know. And I just loved it. And I can just I don't I don't have to fit into a box. And I think that that's the biggest thing that I think if we could all be more focused on being one hundred percent off and realizing there's no one else like you. And no one's ever gonna be like you. And you're not going to be like anyone else? So I think it's great to be inspired by other women, but not to feel like that's who I wanna be. I love that. Because everyone has their shit going. More than ever you look in like we talked about before you kinda look at Instagram rail or something you think everyone's perfect. Everybody has something going on in their lives completely. And no one's thinking about anyone else. Like, everyone they about their own stuff. But I agree like people get inspiration. And like, I think you check in on other people. But like nobody's thinking about anyone else is trying to get their own thing. Everyone's in Vail lane. Yeah. And like, I think that's such an important thing to to be able to. I think it's important to care about other people and this is in marriage to like, it's so important. I always wanna put Randy I, but it's something I think about like with motherhood too because I've been thinking so much about that. And I think that how can I be a good mother and good wife, if I'm not, okay? So I think that being selfish sometimes as much as I don't like this so many negative connotations like this much negative more like self care. But I think that you have to put yourself Caiphus like even for me going into Randy. And I having a baby it's gonna change a whole lives because we're so used to being just the two of us and Holck like and. I constantly talked to him about alma ridge has to come first. And. Yeah. So that's. Those would be my my things you can always change that ever needs to change stand out yet Everyday's a new day to out not fit in. It's so much fun relief to so much better. When you guys to that point so early I was like, gosh, I'm a bad ass. And I'm like, my husband loves me for me. He doesn't want to be someone else. No. He wouldn't marry that person. Exactly he wanted and I would married someone else if I wanted him to change. So I know it's like would you finally hit those Oprah says as a moment's they make so much sense. But it's like why I struggle with that so long before because now this is so obvious..

"Really speaks Warner broS exception of Batman some of the Batman movies superman movies most recently with maybe one room, which I'm not even a big fan of. They don't really care how they these characters that they own just put it out there. You know? Yeah. Little give you a big budget. But they'll do anything interesting. You don't put this stuff right here ferris wheel, a kid falling out of it is exactly what cat woman does the thing is even though it's okay. What'd you some different than from the comics? Sure. But what you had is like, it's just nonsense. Nothing about it works. It's not entertaining. I've never entertained except unintentionally when I was laughing at how bad it was literally are you tend to taint? I was I was nine retain the ways I wanted to because I love cat. She's a great character. She's one of my favorite Batman. Well, you know, even that's like, look, I I was never attracted that. Because I hate the character so much what they're doing. It's a work. Hopefully, someday, we'll get a good adaptation of cat woman because jazz great stories, but with this. Yeah, this is this is an truly awful film is a fuck you move. Oh, fuck how? Oh my God. Yeah. There's even thing at it unintentionally because they were so bad at their job. No, this is this is this is trash. Even the laughs. You didn't find some sort of entertainment value in it is it just because your rooted in the character so much that's part of it. But even by itself, the movie just doesn't work. You know, doesn't mean from its dialogue from story from sense of consistency. It's special effects. It's fight choreography the characters are enjoyable, except when unintentionally funny, I look I said like I'm gonna put aside the fact that I'm a fan. This is going to look at the film in itself. Like, even if it wanted some different they failed in that completely. There's nothing there to really enjoy except when you're laughing. And that's the thing. I laughed a lot of his. For me for my review. I have to where do we begin? Because where do we begin? Let's just say this. And this is the biggest strike against the movie, and it didn't hit that big strike, which is it did not make it did not make me mad maybe board, but not make me mad because mostly I have no loyalty to cat will. I have no loyalty to DC, quite frankly. I'm a marvel bitch fan boy. But this didn't destroy my childhood. It didn't ruin fun forever. But what it did do was something different? It reminded me of an age where we accepted everything and anything from superheroes. Bad dialogue, CG PS two characters. All those bad things that we kind of make fun of now it almost brought me back in a weird stodgy type away. And this was one of those ones where everyone's said after this moment. No, we demand something better. We had English Holck. We had the X men that were pretty good. But even even when this came out people saw, and they said, no, we want better than what we're getting here you remember, this is a bomb. This is a critical critical commercial bombed didn't make money. But then we still stand we still get bats superhero. But, but even but even then people back, then knew that I probably from this one that superhero movies could be bad because there was a moment where we were eating everything. Hell anglia's. Hold people. Remember, I remember them liking. No, some people still do for whatever reason. It's weird. It's a weird movie. But what I'm saying is here it was. I think the switch where the year before was English hold. This was to as four and And then. it doesn't five Batman begins shoot in that new area of serious comic..

"Come to the light side of him. But no, the group was watching with also watched the old Holck movie with Lou Ferrigno. No, no, Eric Eric von yada. There's too because there's Bonna, and then there's also the one with Ed Norton. Oh that was when you watch anyways. Awful they ever Norton one. Unwind. No, I'm in the minority. It's better than the ban on one for sure. Dogs. Yeah. I know a lot of people consider that to be the worst of the MC. You who I I don't know. I've heard that if you're not talking iron man three or four to you're not paying attention. Those are two of the worst movies. Favorites really? That allowed. I love Shane black. What you need to know about John. No a Bumblebee. The Bumblebee, it's it's Travis night. So it's not Michael bay. He's stepped aside. And they they they really they turned it into a singular story. It's not this big massive, convoluted mess. I mean, I I look I I might be fun. Then sleep better way. It makes it way more watchable. I think I watch all the transfer movies their garbage. I really do like the first the first one was great Michael bay. Yeah. And they're saying that this is better than the first Michael bay one that transformer fans are finally like, yeah. And they say it really is it's an Omar to the nineteen eighties Amblin films with a lot of hard. I'm super excited. The only thing about the Bumblebee that I'm just hesitant for is just I remember as a kid that animated movie that they made when Bumblebee died that was like one of the most dramatic moments of my child like I remember holding action figures and almost crying in the theater like what? Between the so when you got Bumblebee command, Mary Poppins returns and welcome to Marlin. I was the most interested in seeing welcome tomorrow. And so I'm really bummed that it's not getting. Good. Oh, God, no creative. I love to corral stupor, Steve fantastic. Mule open it open last week that it's supposed to be good. Good review. Torino guy. Clint Eastwood, no the riots. Oh my God. Oh, no, the writer the writer from Minneapolis Minnesota that wrote grandfather also wrote the meal, okay? Let's take a broken limb to vacation, buddy. I was just going to say that I would be willing to give Mary Poppins returns a chance not because of Emily blunt. But because of lin-manuel Miranda because I sure musical genius. And I have a lot of respect for him. So I would be willing to give show. Here's the thing. And I don't think we talked about this before. And I I hadn't talked about it because I've never seen the original Mary Poppins. I've never I just never seen it. I mean, I know about it. But I've never watched it. So check it out. Here's the thing. And I I was if you asked me prior to Mary Poppins opening up it was going to be good at the box office. I would have said, no. And the reason I would have said no was because I just have never seen in my entire life. Any sort of any sort of deciding the style GIC desire for a return to Mary Poppins. It's just not something that and the fan base doesn't care. It's okay. It's grew up with it. I love very Poppins. But it's kind of like don't go watch it like all the time. Like when you're thinking of a movie that you wanna watch that you loved growing up. You're not like me. Yeah. I don't think people do that with Mary Poppins when they were like, I'm doing a mere puppets returns. And like, yeah. There's going to be people that are gonna go cool because I love the original. But there was no desire to revisit that universe. Is it a different movie, or is it a reboot? No. It's different. What are they going to reboot bed knobs and broomsticks? That's all I wanna know. Yeah. Yeah. Bang bang CGI with that that would be so good right now on the flip side of that. When they put out the trailer for the live action lion. King gosh. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I'm all in. Yeah. Yeah. I am all in. I am a hundred percent all in can. I can I take a I'm actually I'm gonna I'm gonna I bet you and I. Yes. I avert seen the lion bright. And if they're just going to tell the same story is just gonna look kinda different. I can wait. I can say can watch that at home. I don't really care that much with this with the Mary Poppins, at least it's a new story. Like, I may not have been sitting at home pining for an expansion of the Mary Poppins universe. And I don't think anybody was. But it is a beloved film. It is a beloved character. I think the reason for me why this works so well or I'm so excited for it is because when I went to see the lions. Broadway musical. That was great. Amazed fantastic. It was a bit because that works because it's a visual span. It's something different. I think this is going to be, but I think on this same same plane. I from the preview that we watched. I think this is going to be a visually. Stunning. I one hundred percent agree with you. I think even if it's a shot by shot remake of The Lion King. I'm still gonna love it. Because I think that it's going to be absolutely stunning. I mean, you remember when avatar avatars I mean, actually avatar was not really a unique story, but when avatar came out. Poca, honest, fern gully visually. Yes. The time. Like, I mean blowing minds people were going back and seeing it over and over and over again because it was visually stunning. And I think that I'm not saying that people are going to go back and see this Lion King over and over and over again. But I think that's gonna have the same effect where it is just going to be visually. Just a beautiful. Let me speak to drew because I'm with you and hear hidden. Here's where I'm Ed like, I like the original Lion King. But like, I just personal preference. Like unregistered like a live action update of little mermaid before linking. I I'm with you just because I like Lion King. But here here's a here's sort of a weird example to give you the lion. King animated film was a very fleshed out full length movie. Okay. Jungle book if you go back and watch the original jungle book cartoon, it's a very very simple story and very in. So what they did with the jungle book was really they kind of took it with. All right. Who's we're going to open this bad boy up and flesh it out. There is no real fleshing out of the lion. King. Because it was fully fleshed out in that push back on the on the difference between the stage production in the visual spectacle. When I'm watching the stage production part of what makes that so impressive is human beings in the same room. As me are pulling this off if I'm watching it on the movie, I'm never going to get past the fact that they did this with the computer, I think the big thing for me that really comes back is the beauty and the beast movie. Because again, I didn't mind that I thought it was okay. But if this is what we're doing. Now, if Disney is going shot for shot remakes of live action. I'm just not interested. I I I'm with you. I will stay home. And I will watch it when it gets around to DVD or when it's on Netflix. I will watch it then, but I'm not going to spend especially with I'm max and three I'm not going to spend twenty bucks to go. See a movie that I've already seen as far as like The Lion King. You nailed it so hard in that animated movie. There's nothing you're going to do that's going to make that more in. But I will I will just sort of side with with nicotine in San before citing the example of beating the bees though is. Interesting because but because beauty and the beast in my opinion was a fully fleshed out cartoon, and they did do a very good job of adapting to live action and adding a few moments in so if they can do that with The Lion King. I think they're going to be on solid ground. We'll say didn't do better off just remained nostalgic stamps, better better move it. It's a better movie than beauty and the beast, regardless of Mary Poppins could be the best film ever made in line king remake could be a piece of garbage. It's still going to make more money. Yes. It's still there is a lot of stuff with The Lion King 'cause Lanqing and jungle book or out of the same base book and Kimba the lion cub, which is what lying kings based on. There's a lot of stuff in that book that they didn't touch on. Wow. Shannon..

"Much help as you need. All projects have a starting point start with Lowe's. All righty. You know, I finished the documentary, Andre, the giant. I'd not watched it all the way through. It's it's sad to watch because I was not a wrestling fan, but I understood the magnitude of Andre, the giant because you have to understand back then how much TV you were watching. And when somebody said there's an actual giant. And you're young and you see Andre, the giant and in the documentary, they keep enhancing his height and weight. He starts out his seven feet like three hundred. And then by the end of the documentary, he seven, four close to five hundred pounds which he wasn't, but they he was growing not literally figuratively. He was growing. Lay might have been growing weight wise, but I don't think height wise. But when they had wrestlemainia three and I remember going, they're going to sell out the silver, do they're going to have ninety thousand people in there. And I still didn't grasp it because I wasn't interested in it. I think I was back then I was going, you know, it's not real and then you'd have people say, yes, it is. And like, no, it is. That's real blood and I go, no, it's not. So I got caught up in that where I didn't appreciate. Macho man savage in all of those guys, but I didn't know that Andre, the giant did night, not like macho man, and they showed video where under the giant would go out of his way to actually try to hurt him in the ring because everything else was scripted and he's actually tried to hurt this dude when he's in the ring, the brilliance of this documentary on Andre, the giant. Is whole Cogan is so good and even Vince McMahon is revealing. But what I loved about hulk is they go into wrestlemainia three, Andre, the giant is coming back and Andre, the giant is now going to be the bad guy. But Andre, the giant is coming back and he's in pain. You know, he shouldn't be wrestling anymore. Holck writes the script detailed script of how this matches going to go. And they have the script where hulk is saying, okay, start out with you. Take a wild swing. I do that. I do this. I do that flip you over, so it's all detailed there, but he doesn't know if Andre, the giant is going to comply and lead hulk win, because that's the big story. Everybody wants to win and hope keeps trying to go we. Okay. Are we? All right. And then Andrea giants like, Yup, and he didn't know if Andre, the giant was going to let him win, and. Then at the very end Hawkins of winning, but people are throwing stuff at Andre, the giant, he was beloved, but they were throwing stuff because now he's the bad guy and is he's ex even when he's coming in there throwing stuff adding when he's leaving, they're throwing stuff at him and that was it. That was the end really of Andre, the giant. Yep. One did it say in there when back in the day when wrestler scripted the event the matches, did they have like a written script that they looked at did actually go into a ring an hour before a day before and work it out. They just had hold telling you the fact that he wrote it down and you could see it written, and then they showed you the sequence where it was all scripted there. But what these guys, they think, Andre, the giant probably wrestled in over five thousand matches in his life, but just the wear and tear and he couldn't go anywhere as big as he was. There was nothing that was catered to him. The bed was never going to be the right size chairs getting into a car flying and. He went around the world. And Andre, the giant is the reason why you have WWE because he was the first true global star in wrestling. And then you know, ho- came along and hulk was huge. But Andre, the giant Andre, the giant didn't master the language..

"Let's move on to spoilers for vendors infinity war now looking for the secret tennis it's coming but you might find because coach they're not gonna see this video looking possum you don't really to work at him dying alien won't be all right everyone let's dive into spoilers for vendors affinity war and this is one of those movies that demands a scene by scene breakdown and discussion so i'm just gonna read the plot summary from wikipedia and we're just gonna go kind of sequenced by sequence and and talk about some of the things worth highlighting chickens so the movie begins having previously acquired the power stone from the planet zander thanos and his henchman coal obsidian ebony maw proxima midnight and corvus glove by the way really really band grape intercept the ship carrying the survivors of escorts instruction for low key heimdal and holkar powerless to rent them from extracting the space stone from the tesseract stores and prison and thanos overpowers holck heimdal sends hope to earth using the by frost before being killed thanos kills loki then depart with his henchman and obliterates the ship so you were saying how movie begins in media res right and meteorites at the end of the regular it's like ice home is not a place it's a people all these amazing people who are going to be ruthlessly slaughtered offs gained before the credits even role in avengers infinity war the ass credits that does show let ship appearance does show.

"Stats stuff they were really lose because holck is oftentimes kind of the heavy is they think of geologic era tragic beset upon oh i have this curse and this time this let him have fun with it you get a little of that actually one of the best scenes in the movie one of the scenes that i keep going back to is the scene of holck in the queen's yet jeff like hearing black widows voice via first time in two years i think that sort of transmission from the end of age baltron that he shuts off and his reaction to that was actually ironically in a movie full of comedic moments that was actually the moment that i keep thinking about be like oh my god so just wracked inside over there all hung up on her very hung up honor um so yet that was it it certainly and it's kind of a microcosm for the movie where it's like the surprising things that you end up liking us the things that are sort of smaller and not the big flashy things which would you think of a volker thakur was great i thought chesa thompson really brought this confidence and his bad asked nece to the role just really she doesn't have time for any of this she's just like oh god like x want to be drinking in just destroying people myself so yeah i i really enjoyed tessa thompson's performance she was a really good foil to thor um really animals from where four started out early all where he's you know he's exiled and it's about how he has to learn to become a worthy and uh vall trees sort of arc is similar to that where she's trying to rediscover this passion and this sort of almost patriotism for ask our throughout the movie in then by the end she gets there um so yeah i doubt overall four rag knock a very fun addition to the mc you.
