Substance abuse linked to COVID-19 susceptibility: Study

"The pandemic, There's been been an an increase increase in in substance substance abuse. abuse. It's It's also also had had significant significant impact impact on on mental mental health health and and is is impacting impacting communities communities across across America. America. ABC ABC News News producer producer Jenny Jenny Goldstein Goldstein has has more more on on some some of the steps being taken and is part of the ABC News turning point. Siri's were focusing on how addiction affects communities of color. He was Jenny. September is National Recovery Month an entire month dedicated to educating Americans about substance use disorders, mental health treatment and services. I am a woman in long term recovery from alcoholic drug addiction. Paddy McCarthy is the CEO of the organization faces and voices of recovery. I have overcome challenges with my own alcohol and turkeys and now then in recovery for over 30 years this year marks the 31st anniversary of National recovery Month. This year's theme joined the voices for recovery celebrating connections. Recovery is a journey. We want a path to a better future. Martine Hackett is an associate professor in the master of public Health and community health programs at Hofstra University. She says, the first step to recovery is acknowledgements. You really cannot attempt to solve that problem or to even begin your recovery until you acknowledge that jacket says racial disparities exist in the process of recovery. This is in part due to the barriers that hinder minorities in particular from getting the help. They need some of these barriers that minorities face when it comes to identifying help. Have to do with the even their perceived need for treatment, Recognising that they might not want to have help from official means and might be more comfortable seeking help from family or from religious institutions. Another obstacle, health insurance coverage or access to behavioral health services. Trauma and racial stress can make minorities more susceptible to miss using drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism. Some of this has to do with concepts around trauma. And the the experiences of trauma clearly in an early age people who are exposed to stressors there's research that talks about the stressors of racism. And how those stressors can cause behaviors that you know people reach to to be able to deal with those stressors. Hackett says. Native Americans are the most affected by these disparities. They have a higher rate of addiction, but they also have a lower rate of recovery and being able to seek recovery. As for national recovery month McCarthy says Connecting in 2020 will be a little different than previous years. You know that we can't do it alone. So that's why the theme of celebrating connections is so important, especially right now. During Koven 19 when connecting with people has become a whole new challenge when we're not able to visit people in person or tender, usual gatherings to support recovery. McCarthy also says the language and terminology we used when referring to those in recovery is an important step. No longer use words like addict. We no longer use the word drug abuser. We have to remember that these are family friends, sums of daughters we have shifted. Two person first language such as a person with the substances disorder, Hackett says the stigma can make it more difficult for those struggling to seek help. This is especially true for minorities, the idea of stigma that there are certain Ways of different cultures view addiction and that people might not feel comfortable being able to even admit that they have a problem. Faces and voices of recovery has a website where resource is accessible both during Andy on National Recovery Month National recovery Month that order so visit the website you can find out where the events are happening and stay up to date as the month of September comes to an end the fight for recovery and dismantling research All barriers continues. Ending the stigma and making resource is available to all is a step in the right direction.

NCAA Considers All Options For March Madness

"They're still at least a chance that we won't even be playing basketball games a week from today. Yeah that is certainly a chance and spoken with a couple people on Wednesday just connected with the incident delay and if you've thought it they thought it there's so many different scenarios are being considered at this point One thing I neglected to mention at the start of the podcast. What preceded the instabilities statement? Because actually I G I thought the NBA would beat them to it but the NCAA relying on its covert nineteen expert panel when you had the governor of Ohio then instituting the ban meaning Doesn't matter what you wanted to do until I four and the regionals in Cleveland. They aren't getting played in our state. It's just not happening if you want. Those tournaments played with fans in the building. Go find another state. Washington state got a bit more aggressive. I still don't think spokane has affected and then believe the mayor of Houston put the same kind of ban in effect for all events going forward for the foreseeable future. So the and that's where another regional site is so the incident was put into into a tight spot there as for not playing the incidentally tournament altogether that obviously an option that has to still be under consideration. It could be a possibility if you have the corona virus that reaches players or coaches or staff members. Then you have a new issue altogether. The question becomes if you can screen how you can screen. How often you can. Screens spoke with a couple of coaches wondered aloud. If we're GONNA play this tournament. Are we going to have to go through a situation where our players are looked at on a daily basis? Is that even doable? To are there. Are there even the kids out there because one of the big issues right now widespread if you watch the news that it's not just that we don't know how many people really are carrying the corona virus? It's that we lack even the capability of testing. Everyone that could have it or may or may not have it at this point and so how will that play a factor as well now by removing crowds? And we're moving more people from the Games. You lessen the impact there but think about where we were. Gp This was twenty hours ago when we podcast it. Okay think about how fast this story has jumped in twenty hours. We are still eight days away from the start of the tournament in earnest with the first round on on next Thursday so man I really really hope we don't get there. It would be just. I mean talk about one of your all time sports stories. It would be terrible. I hope that we don't get there but we have to allow for the possibility for that to happen. And for it not to happen with the incidental. A member institutions are going to have to do is. They're going to have to be very proactive. Very careful in how they want to do what they're gonNA do in the coming days. Okay and by that. I mean we could have a selection process. That's unlike any before. In order to eliminate travel or reduce it I should say and reduce the risk of potential exposure by not having teams Go through an airport or more than one airport if necessary. If you can bus to excite keep your self contained do that it would not surprise me. Haven't heard anything about this yet but if it doesn't in fact become a thing I think the w needs to get ahead of it and let us know at least in advance of the bracket coming out. You might have them. This is just amusing here but you might have the selection committee up to bracket around a corona virus concerns and just as one example instead of like a team like Hofstra okay instead of in a traditional year like there are thirteen seed. And you know what you just get shipped to Omaha. That's the deal. Well you know what if hoster can bus to Albany? Why would we not do that for the safety of our student athletes? Because that's the other aspect you've got to take into account. Here is the liability concerns. Of course they WANNA play the Games. I mean I've heard from a few coaches are like kids. Want to be in the like. Don't take this away from us. Please please please please please. There's a little bit concerned that already but it wouldn't stop me if we do wind up. Seeing a bracket that is built in part with the mindset of reducing travel and giving geographic preference to wherever the schools are related to the closest sites and making that as fair and balanced as possible. What does that solve though? If every team's GONNA Charter to wherever site there play just. I just reduce the risk of not going to an airport. Not Having to take steps. Abc instead of just saying hop on the bus right out from your campus. Go right to the hotel. Just reducing little reducing little bits of riskier and reducing times on travel. It's just I think it might be something that could be a that. Could be on the table.

New Algorithm Can Turn Thoughts Into Speech

"The first time ever. Scientists have taught an algorithm to translate thoughts into recognizable speech. Yeah. Researchers at Columbia University and Hofstra north wells school of medicine have made human thoughts. Audible and this groundbreaking research has big implications for medicine. The breakthrough relies on what's called a VO Kotor, that's the same technology. That powers our robot. Butlers like, Alexa, and Siri. A VO coder is just a computer algorithm that can synthesize human speech. And in this case the research team taught such an algorithm to recognize and translate brainwave patterns in a person's auditory cortex into speech. The auditory cortex is the part of the brain. That's activated when we speak and listen. And importantly, when we imagine speaking and listening in other words, when we think I'm over simplifying this a little since the definition of thought is actually an open philosophical question. But in the context of this study, I'm talking about what's called inner speech or language, we've actively called to mind, so like your brain can picture a sun flower. But that's not the type of verbal thought. This study was focused on for the researchers to teach the voter how to translate verbal thoughts. They used brain scans that were taken during routine brain surgeries on epileptic patients. They tracked the activity in the auditory cortex of those patients while they listen to various people read sentences out loud overtime. The scans taught the voter to match neural activity to simplify speech so far it can quote unquote, read the numbers zero through nine from brain activity alone next. Researchers plan. To experiment with other words in sentences. That's a big breakthrough of course. But the other groundbreaking part is that the voters robo voice can translate brainwaves reliably in intelligibly the team found that people could understand and repeat the sounds the voter made about seventy five percent of the time. I can barely get Syria to understand what I'm saying that often the technology is great because one day it could help people who can't speak connect with the world. Whether they've lost that ability because of a stroke LS or some other illness or injury, the research is still in the early stages, but someday this code technology could be built into an implant that could help patients communicate just by thinking. And ideally, it would only translate thoughts on command. Because if you think online privacy is hard to keep right now, imagine if you had a device that could literally translate your thoughts could be trouble really, hoping they focus hard on that whole on-command part.

"Cerebral voice talk with that foists now eight seven seven three eight one three eight one one. Good music rich, Keith the music going like this music. Mellow tonight. Cool calm things are getting a little more normal. Let's continue when a US marine calls. I always listen. I love marines. Love what they stand for my daddy was marine John in Washington DC. I give marines presidents here. Don't Cunningham in for Mark Levin. John, please go ahead. Polynice thing pretty intently from from start to where it is now and absolutely after agree with your opening monologue. I off facts are stubborn things, you know. In in the words of our of our of our president, John Adams. You know, you just dissect it, it looks strictly at facts, and you go off the values of the country that it till proven guilty. It's absolutely mind boggling, how people can lead to no kidding. A conclusion of of this guy. He's guilty. John last night. I watched some of the leftist media today talk about how unfair it was that the president declared innocent bread. Kevin isn't that what he is aren't you innocent until proven guilty? And this wasn't a case. This wasn't close. His wasn't fifty one forty nine to give me some small example. Rachel Mitchell, who I think did a lousy job is to prosecute Turks before the US Senate kinda walked Christina Ford down the primrose path when she oddly questioned her about coaching friend who was taking a federal lie detector tests. I'm watching Rachel metro. I said she must know something in what she knew was that the ex boyfriend of Christina Ford, and by the way, Christine of Ford. Cheated on the ex boyfriend is always credit cards, but I- redress what what the reason? Rachel Mitchell said those questions about coaching a friend for taking a lie detector test. The under oath to a sworn affidavit the boyfriend of Christina Ford of the nineteen ninety said that she coached a friend of hers, a female friend, preparing to take US government administered polygraph exam, and practically everything that Christine Ford said was either a lie or a falsehood. Whether it's the front door the fear of flying not taking airplanes, whether it was coaching someone on a lie detector test. She did coach somebody on detector tests. So Christina Ford. Lied about little things. Then lied about the big things and assuming she lied, John. What does that mean for bread Kavanagh's sanity and furry status doesn't that mean he's innocent until proven guilty? Well, without a doubt. That is the only conclusion one could come to I absolutely sad for the for the family. And I feel a lot of fear that no kidding. The kind of a tactic is actually allowable. That's that's terrified. Because you've now take take somebody from a lesser degree or a lesser income in life, or whatever the case may be, you know, sometimes they're just no coming back for something. Like that. There could be no coming back whether whether it. Just the beer fact that they could be absolutely false at something. Like that. You know gets thrown at someone, and that's it. Life is over John Cavanaugh, go to get back his reputation, you're in the Marine Corps. If some other fellow marine woman accused you of rape. And there was no evidence that took place shooter know where it happened. Didn't know when it happened. Didn't know how it happened and the four witnesses. She supplied to be witnesses turned out to be non witnesses because they didn't they didn't. They didn't see what she said they saw and you're still found guilty of out of the Marine Corps. Where would you go to get back to your reputation? Right on. That would that would be a hell of a road wouldn't come back. But then again, I wouldn't get their the produ- process would prevent it from such. And you know, John, I'm a criminal defense attorney I've been in the attorney general's office when someone comes in and says I was sexually assaulted unlike many other crimes, I tend to believe them if you come in to me and say, you know, what someone stole my Chevrolet. I'm not going to question you to say what did someone before? No. It was a Chevrolet. So if you go in and say, my left foot is hurting. I'm not going to say, why don't you mean? You're right elbow. No. But when it comes to sexual assault ten to twenty percent of the time there are false allegations of sexual assault that later on proves to be absolutely alive. For example, the innocence project has listed hundreds and hundreds of men who have been exonerated years later who were wrongfully convicted of sexual assault. Gregory counts and Van Dyke Perry to black guy spent thirty seven years in jail on false rape charges. There was the Hofstra university case for for college man at Hofstra were charged with rape. In eighteen year old fellow student. It came out a year later, she made it all up, and it was a lie. There's thousands of examples how a woman or a man falsely accuses someone of a sexual assault for all kinds of reasons. And all I'm saying is give Brad Kavanagh due process. The right to cross examination the right to confront is accusers. The right to be in the same room and look her in the eye which the Senate denied and now that the week took Jeff flake oddly enough. It was a good thing. It took an extra week because conservative media tore apart the story occur of Ford and prove that she was either a prevaricators or a liar or both. And they could prove that Brad Kavanagh was in fact innocent and not even present. And so when this happened is that gonna stop the radical left now from perpetrating lies against bread cabinet. The answer is not just no the answer's hell, no. They're going to continue. This has been a tactic all along though, this this is what they do. And that's the part that just is absolutely mind boggling to me, you know. And it's like. Just it just it just doesn't seem like there's just any ethics left anymore. Where is the moral gauge at what point do you stand up with some kind of ethical value and go this is wrong, regardless of by political opposition? You know, what's going on here is that it's a constant fight. It kind of began with Bork. Then it continued to Clarence Thomas a little bit of Alito his wife cried had to leave the room with with the Lito. Democrats. Do this the Republicans, but even know Elena Kagan made several misstatements nobody talked about perjury. Nobody talked about impeachment Lindsey Graham voted for soda my. Or he voted for Kagan. Democrats. Do this the Republicans, but Republicans have too much character to do it to to Democrats when there's an odd rightist IKEA Charlottesville that does something wrong. And those clowns those fools if you're a white guy Martin around the southern city with Tiki torches yelling about Jews. Then you're a clown. And you're a full we can't have that in this country, and it happens on occasion. But the constant drumbeat from the left. Whether it's Portland or San Francisco or antiga are whether it's the Democrats in congress or whether it's those in restaurants in elevators that chase down Republicans. It's happening ten. Times more often with Democrats and Republicans. But I guarantee you John the media will not cover it that way, the media covered Charlottesville, and they showed a covered Charlottesville. Why aren't they covering what am I doing in Portland, Oregon? That's what I want. Why don't they cover that? Oh, oh, well, because it doesn't fit their narrative how about Stephen scully's gunned down. How about a democrat hunting and gunning down a Republican wanting to kill dozens it was a one day story, and they stopped the Stephen Scully story after one day. I if someone wearing a mega hat, it's done that to a democrat. They would follow that democrat for months to talk about the daily struggles that democrat had the violence committed by Republican. But when Stephen Scalise was shot down like a dog at a baseball practice. It was a one or two day story because it didn't fit the narrative the media dropped like a hot potato. Absolutely. I remember my high school journalism teacher got his soul. The biggest thing he could push down everybody. I Don ward winning highschool newspaper and taught for thirty years without a be nonbiased. I've just had that their sticks in my aunt like like. That that concept in in most journalistic circles, most not all but most is lost. It's no kidding. What political swam do? I have what do I support it? I mean, it's like. Never ever existed in American journalism, obviously. But I mean, it's just really. John last night. I'll say this Leland Kaiser was the girlfriend of Christina Ford. Who gave a sworn statement that I don't recall the event, Christina never talked about it in highschool. We've been friends for like thirty seven thirty seven years. She's never mentioned it to me Leland Kaiser was a name given to the authorities by Christina Ford is somebody who would confirm what happened on that day. A former FBI agent contacted Leland Kaiser girlfriend Cristina Ford and try to get her to flip and to refute and repudiate her sworn statement. That's how far I guarantee you this John, I if Leland Kaiser the female friend, Christina Ford, had not given a quick affidavit that said that didn't happen. And if that FBI agent had flipped Leland Kaiser and Leland Kaiser at said, well, Christina Ford told me on that day. What had happened in that bedroom with Mark judge and Brad Kavanagh if that had happened right now Brad Kavanagh would not be. Be in the US supreme court because Susan Collins hunger hat on the fact that the witnesses provided by the so called victim did not confirm what she said. And they tried every way possible to find dirt on Brad Kavanagh, and he's such a poi- scout they couldn't find anything and at the end of the day they collapsed. And I think the president last night your president your commander in chief. And my president did a fabulous job telling the country exactly how he felt about Brett cavenaugh. We need more circumstances. Like that John thanks for your call. And once again, thank you very much your service. I'll let's continue with with more. "Ter point was you said earlier when we were talking that each girl had thirty three stab wounds each and i saw that seems pretty methodical in pretty pretty premeditated that you're counting thirty three and the prosecutor tied in that he when he played basketball his his number on the marine basketball team and maybe for college his number that he wanted many athletes choose a number and keep it as long as they can was thirty three and so they tied it together an eye just being the opposite of you i said i think that is incredible evidence that he did it and then he's a methodical premeditated murder because our dad played football for hofstra and his number was thirty four and everything was thirty four every pass code every anything that we had to think of it will ever come up with the number he always choose always chose thirty four so i actually think that is a great connecting the dots but yours you sense was using a pasco that has the number thirty four because that's jersey is a little different than saying i'm massively murdering these two girls i'm going to count thirty three stab wounds and first of all i don't think i just the medical examiner says yes there's thirty three but if i was a prosecutor there might be thirty to thirty four i would say absolutely close enough i'm gonna call this thirty three minute make this because that's your ticket to premeditation i get it also saying who's to say that so discussing about but that one slice didn't make another and there might have been thirty four but it was counted as thirty three i mean it's just but it is i mean if you look at it you'd want to definitely do something like that because that helps your case that's to me i think yeah and if i was jury i'd be like wow but to me i just think i it was such a although obviously he was charged with first degree.
