'Mr. Reagan' Creator Chris Kohls Describes the Pop Culture Success of 'Let's Go Brandon'

"Welcome back to one on one with mister Reagan. Let's turn Chris to because I want to get the sense from you a world that I don't understand. Let's talk a little bit about media. You have to be cautious. That's why you've created this alter egos and these fantasy stories you tell about certain elections on your YouTube channel. How are you doing, by the way? Are you being throttled are you being demonetized? How are the the Palo Alto big tech overlords treating mister Reagan? I do think some of some of the restrictions have been lifted recently, and I'm not really sure why. But I had this video about let's go brand and you know the let's go Brandon phenomenon. I decided to recap that because it was something that I started to see on Twitter and I follow this stuff kind of closely, so I kind of understood what it was pretty quickly. But I realized most Americans did not understand what let's go Brandon was. They didn't understand where it came from. They didn't understand all the phenomena that went along with it. And I said, okay, let me just do a comprehensive video about the let's go Brandon movement. And I did this video and it's up to, I think, almost 400,000 views now. So we're doing pretty good. Yeah, that one just really blew up. That was I think a lot of people were curious. Like, I don't understand this. Let's go Brandon thing. So my video, I think is the number one, let's go brand and video on YouTube. That's not like a music video. You know, there's all these songs that have come out. And then I was able to interview this guy, loser, Alexander, who you should have on your show by the way. Great guys. Yes, yes, yes, yes. His song went number one on iTunes, right? He had the song the hook is, you know what they say in hoe. That's the hook of the song. It's a great song. It's like it's very catchy. Most of America just fell in love with this song, and then Bryson gray came out with a song that got actually banned on YouTube because he mentioned COVID pandemic stuff. And so his song then went number one. We've had some on this show. He's great. He's great. He's a great guy. He's a great, but I think part of the success of his version was people thinking they were buying lows version and they bought his version instead. And so his so Lowe's is a little bit irritated. He's like, what is going on? I mean, they're both good songs. They're both good songs, or like I can say anything bad about either of them, but so I got loser on the show and because he's out here in LA. And he's a really good guy. You know, he's a strong Christian. He's a good guy. And strong conservative Trump supporter and just really cool song and a lot of fun. Anyway, so some of my videos have been doing pretty well. Others struggle a little bit, but then, you know, they're not all

Maybe haven't been indoctrinated by communism yet. Haven't thought mcdonald's handling robots by now i guess the robots can take yours. They can't flip burgers yet shane. Yeah they still need somebody in the back of the house. I would think he'd wanted to be the other way around. Yeah yeah because. I don't want fourteen-year-old cooking my food. I've seen enough episodes of beavis and butthead. I've seen waiting i know what happens. I mean this is ridiculous. I mean i understand that working at mcdonalds fourteen year. Probably hateful of that. You know monumental level of responsibility i think i could understand but this is really the world is coming to you. Were moving towards child labor. Now we're almost there. We're almost there have been fourteen barely a teenager at that point. I just love the. I'm looking at this picture. The giant banner like this banner is is the wits of the building and it's just very proud bright yellow colours now hiring fourteen and fifteen year old little. Donald slow going on ryan surprised that you don't offer the name lolo corner it does seem a little bit. Hey mission discount on big macs why you know. I think it's just amazing because oriented. It's not exactly leading the way with their economy right now. Like the adults aren't working yet. The adults are working there sitting around collecting unemployment watching early retire. You be start working at six. You retire by seventeen and he could be dead by thirty. Logan's run guys have low. And who is speaking mcdonald's when he say we. I know what usually keep it to like countries in cities and states. Why don't we count a corporation in the set man now. Because i think mcdonald's if you count all their employees they're probably the size of a small country. So i've got a story year about mcdonald's diner who's horrified dieter. Diner is somebody. The was eating at mcdonald's in out of course again. This is in britain. Here you don't wanna know. I don't want us up so so. This guy goes to mcdonald's. He gets his breakfast sandwich and because he's got. Ocd opens a sandwich every time right sandwich. Well this guy probably will either always do that to the rest of time or he'll never do it again fact. He's vowed to go vegan because he opened his sandwich and he saw nipple is bacon. Role is to be feared pace. Gadsby be glad that. I'm not putting the picture on the screen here. It's it's pretty nasty. Hiring fourteen year olds trainers. Jeez yeah if your bacon has areola. There's an issue if your burger. Hattie has a dick involved. May throw that one away. So i get. He's going vegan. he's he's never gonna eat again. He says putting the soy i was gonna say why is it just not that would be a better option for god's sake if you're listening do not open your sandwiches just think of it like like old saying like you don't wanna know how sausages may again one and now you don't wanna know what's in your fucking mcdonalds. I pretty sure i nap. Surprised there was a nipple in it. I would actually been a little bit glad because it proves it was real at. Yeah it's less processed than i thought. Votes finally looks. Go down to mexico. Where i get this. They're giving away a notorious drug kingpin safehouse in a lottery. Okay that's like the winner might be. Ah fighting off a little. More than. I don't know if i'd want to win. I don't think the winners really a winner here. Yeah el chapo. Steakhouse is what they're giving away isn't the mexican lottery and i think that's a monkey pod feel like there's a real monkey. Aw yeah mean. I've heard all these stories about people win the lottery and they don't even want to get like they don't want their picture on the news. They don't want their name. they released. We'll get you know everybody's asking you for money or if you're in the wrong neighborhood. If you know the wrong people somebody might try to rob you go bankrupt after but they're really sticky with el chapo safehouse. I'm sure nobody knows where that is. That's dangerous that being mexico might have access to a fucking army only way. I could see this going well. The only way. I'll tell you what it is you win out chopper. Statehouse turn that shit airbnb. Just give it right back to el chapo shit to an airbnb. I would just i would do. The of a win. Did not meet the win taco. I sign over your house back to you. It's a feeling you kinda half to sort of push down. I think as an adult who can like saying can and as someone who has to pay bills and stuff like the times when something seventy percent off your i have to. I mean it's basically free. It's such a deal. yeah exactly. They're giving it away so speaking of shopping. That brings me to my big question. Obviously what did you bring to just bought it. Okay so i. I feel weird saying i feel like i. Should i have it right here. I should just you know. Lift it up but they can see that sometimes not too dramatic rebuilt. Just pretend you guys. Yes just for ten. Sure i'm where would where if you weren't living in florida if you wasn't if your family wasn't there if you're your inlaws weren't there. Where would you be good question. I'm like made for suburban loving and i've just kind of good that it's my lot in life i understand and let me tell you about la. It's a city but it's very suburban. So you should come really. Oh yeah. I've never been come out. There's not it's funny after ten years of living in brooklyn. I'm like okay. I know what a city is. La is not a city l. a. is a bunch of suburbs in in a place that there's a city like anything you think. Think you think you know about a city is just not what's in. La there's downtown la which is the most city like part of los angeles but everything else is just houses and cars. I i can't walk anywhere. And i love that i can just. You don't like fascinating. Oh yeah i mean. I think you would think you would like it out here because you still can be like. Oh no i live in a city but you're still also driving to costco in the car. My favorite activity right so and you know and there's no it's really weird it's weird. It's weird and every time people are like l. as a city. I'm like Definitely but it is really not very suburban and that's why i like it too because i love a suburban lifestyle. I thought that. I'd love dc carrying my groceries on. The metro was enough for me to be like. Yeah i've never. I i can't do and also the great thing about florida. Is that like you guys. All have central air conditioning air conditioning. Florida understands air conditioning. Oh yeah and california doesn't because it gets cold at night and so that's a big complaint about here. Also new york doesn't really get it either. But florida yes. It's very hot and humid. But you'll never go somewhere where they don't have air-conditioning. Oh yeah no i. I don't know what would even happen. Arecibo growth and we literally like call an emergency repair company. And we were like we need you to come out right now. Tell me what it costs to be. Here yeah cool. No rain whatever. How hot is it there right now. Mid-july i'm i think it's outside yet today but i think it's like high nineties and humid. I mean i don't know i i. It's such like heavy. Have you been to florida..

Oppo find x3 pro review

"Embargo for the for the find x three pro lifted this morning this is okposo latest and greatest opo and oneplus share parent company. Bb case so there will be some overlap in what we talk about We don't know a lot about the oneplus series but what we know about the finance three pro. I think will dovetail nicely into the rumors for the oneplus nine. So let's start with you. Miriam you have this phone. It's oboe is not a brand name and north america yet. But i think it's becoming a bit more ubiquitous in europe where alex is you've reviewed one pl- or oboe phones for years now and you're you're among the first people to bring kind of these. Chinese brand opal vivo. Walkway into the purview of us audiences. So when you take a look at the x three pro. What's your first impression. Is this a phone that was made for a worldwide audience or is this more a phone that was made for a chinese audience. That is them being sort of adapted for the west. I think we're at the point now. Where i wanna odd xiaomi to your last i think yeah okay. I think we're the point. Where really these global launches of these phones the me levin from shami recently of course the oppo phoenix three pro and financial three series our global phones through and through. And i think that that's very exciting to me. Now we get the short end of the stick in north america. You're in canada. I'm in the us. Because we still don't get full five g support for our weird bands. And that means that i hesitate to recommend this phone to folks live on the north american continent of this time. I haven't tested the oppo yet on five g. here i'm hoping that as qualcomm becomes more omnipresent not that it isn't already but i mean in terms of its Band support for five g. sub. Six that we get eventually to a point where even buying global phone will just work on some bands in us. Kind of like four g. Lt. foams do and in canada. So i think these phones feel like truly global phones to me. I think that the biggest challenge the biggest obstacle that existed in the pass with these two years ago three years ago. If you imported one was the software. Felt very chinese in the sense that it was. It's like it's hard to explain. But there's a certain flavor to chinese phones if you've ever used one that doesn't have google services on it and that's changed radically. I think caller west which is what apple runs which is an on top of android is even closer now to oxygen. Which is what one plus has which makes sense. Bbq groups same company but in the past. That wasn't always the case. And i think xiaomi's done a very good job as well as an improving it appears to be more you know more universal to the global markets to customers in different countries. So i really have no qualms with this phone i think. It's it's a solid all-round flagship. It brings to the table some things we've never seen before and it on top of that. You know short of the five g support from north. America is a truly global phone so alex. You're the only person among the four of us that uses this phone. Where in the markets intended give us your overview of how fits into the uk european market. And what your first impressions are so whether fit into the market. Whether hoping to the mock i think is in the gap. The is currently in the process of being vacated by wa so there is a a room for another major player in europe and the uk. And i think that's that's where they plan to slow us into already seeing that taking advantage of always current challenges in china whether the now the the number one manufacturer but yeah i think in terms of just the quality the phone. It's it builds on what we saw in the next two pro in little ways last year But the my money this is a little bit of a one. Step forward one step back. Sort of a situation They're all the things. I really enjoyed about the findings to pro- And it it just seemed to have every angle sort of covered in terms of photography and a big part of that is super zoom telephoto in it. Yeah oddly something that a lot of brands of moving away from this year with the exception of while way sometime maybe xiaomi That's something i really miss. Unfor- photography scented phone that seems like a big emission. Especially when you have this weird microscope thing which is fun to play around with but is not going to have anywhere near the practical value In terms like dealer photography assume would get you So that's one sort of disappointments. That i have with it Made worse by the fact that. I'm not a massive found. The microscope The other side air you. i know this is. This is a one. A one point of conflicts on this phone denialism massive out of the microscope. But just before we get to that. The other thing is Find extra prolapsed yet no wireless charging is kind of becoming a table. Stakes feature ever since apple introduced is Now we finally have that but the battery life is just null. Great unstaffed That's the problem right When you getting in the region of twelve to thirteen hours In its its fooling over after about three and a half hours screen on you know especially for me coming from pixel five and show. I've been spoiled a little bit by that phone but Yeah it's haunted. Described the boundary line for this thing is anything but just a big disappointment for me. I would agree with that in the week or so that i've used it especially coming from the galaxy s twenty one pixel five. This is a big battery. that just doesn't perform like a big battery but were still a month out from launch and miriam. I know you haven't spent a ton of time with it but what's your impression of. I wanna come back to the camera. Because i think the the cameras a sort of a question mark for me. Every time i've spoken to one. Plus they give me different answers for why they made the decisions they did around the load out but the phone. Form factor right. They made a big deal about this single piece of glass on the back and how they machine did and you know burned it in killing at seven hundred degrees and puts a magic spell on it to keep its shape and all that. What's your impression of the form of this device. It's really interesting. And i think it's something that a lot of people it's pretty arresting to somebody who's looking at it from the back for the first time. Yeah i love the design. I think it's really unique. A middle worried that you know. It's like form over function in some way. Because i mean at this price point. What's the price anyway. Do we know eleven hundred pounds or twelve hundred years this price. That's fine but i like so gonna be a thousand like it's about the same as the next to last year pros last year. But he's a little bit cheaper but yeah that over thousand dollar price point. I'm okay with the crazy. You know wizards type approach to making the thing with thousands of hours of manufacturing time. Whatever it might be. I think it looks really cool. I've got the kind of grayish color. One agree dark rate lack. I don't know what color that is. But it's looking at a mirror. The whole thing is one piece. It's very cool. My my thing is that i'm really happy. They added wireless charging. That was the thing that i wanted to make a final to pro my daily driver austere and it up with of course oneplus eight pro which is count like again you know the oneplus nine pro is going to be a dead ringer of this phone. So no surprise there like in many ways so the reason i couldn't do it because what trudging was missing. Now that's been remedied by battery life. I haven't tested yet. So i don't know but it might be a result of trying to run everything at one twenty hertz and quad hd. I feel that. If i have to compromise somewhere it's resolution usually my eight pro oneplus a prior run at ten eighty p right and probably run the oneplus nine pro and switched to it at ten pm. Pretty convinced. i'm going to switch to it so wait you're of all the phones that you've used including the galaxy s twenty one. You're still using the eight pro. Is your daily driver. Oh yeah no. Don't i don't want to switch to off and i have so many ops to reinstall and set up a one once a year thing and i have to pick wisely right last year. I decided that i was going to wait. For the pixel five and so i hung hoed with the pixel forty or whatever four acceler my pocket for a while and then i realized that the pixel five was giving giving me what i want and the four or five g was actually the better form but didn't have wireless charging in my opinion so then i went said. I need to make a decision. So i went eight pro and the reason for that is i want i want wanna pixel essentially but i wanna flagship right. So what's the closest you can get to that. You can't get a flagship from google anymore. Anyway i digress but back to the quickey unfortunately have just to go as soon but i feel that for me. What surprised me. The most is the telephone okay. I couldn't get numbers on this. Is it three x two x two x optical and switch to x optical with five x figs. Zoom whatever hybrid. That's hybrid probably looks okay at five x hybrid but probably know better than one hundred eight megapixel. That's trying to do five x kinda like the eleven right. Yeah these over the past It's just fine. I is is fine of five but go beyond five. It's a bit yeah. We had a paris copa. Like five x right. That was different from the oneplus. Eight pro which only had like three x telephoto. So i think the teleph- the the lack of the telephoto disappearing from almost everyone's phones except for you know an iphone doesn't really count because there's only two axe to me. Anything that's to excellence doesn't count. It has to be three more. And ideally it needs to have two of them like the s twenty one ultra or the. We p forty pro plus. Which was my darling camera phone last year. Despite the lack of gm's so you see. That's the reason. Part of the reason daniel that i went with the pro because i knew that if i needed a better camera just pull out a weiwei. P forty plus and carry that with me right and so so then. I guess the party question that i would ask is what would it take for the financial three pro to be your daily driver over the nine. The oneplus nine pro. Because they are so similar to things. And i want that i feel. Actually this might take away from this. Phone is that oppo is holding back for an ultra version. Yes that was my conspiracy theories. Well i feel like we're like because everybody's doing more than a pro. Now i feel that apple is exploring that ultra premium end. And he's gonna come out with a special edition of this phone. That will have a proper periscope telephoto. But what would make me switch would be more see right now. Could live with a two x telephoto. If it's any good. I don't know off to try it but i think for me. It's five g support simply. Because i'm on t. mobile in the us and it's actually beneficial in terms of network coverage for me it's not really beneficial terms of speed by re does give me slightly better performance in some fringe situations and that would be my big. My big request bought the other thing. That i'm interested intrigued. Bob because i haven't really had chance to tessies. Cameras yet. Is their choice of using the two identical fifty megapixel. I am seven six six sensors on the ultrawide and the main to get perfect color. Matching 'cause how's that worked out for you guys so interesting thing. That is the you in theory. That is what happens. But then you have the ai thing that's turned on. Which can you run. I'm not sure by default but if you use it You know it's very useful things in some situations but if you use it then you can get radically different looking switching between the two lenses if you don't have the tent on yet is obviously much closer as a parting thought. I have a feeling that while last year's apple finds pro would have been my choice for that time period of the year that first half of the year until the no twenty ultra came out. Which was my darling phone of the fall. But i switched to it because i was lazy. And of course he has twenty ultra. now is a pretty solid choice for photography. I think until until then until the eight pro last year the findings to pro choice other than wireless charging and five jeep but this year. I'm much more convinced that all want the oneplus nine pro. That's your segue as i'm leaving because for me. The one plus nine pro. F- i don't know all of the details yet but that hassle partnership has me intrigued and more importantly i know it's going to support all the bands properly in the us. And it's going to have wireless charging which i need and it's going to be a slightly smaller phone. I think this year which. I'm very happy about because the eight cross a freaking monster of a beast. It's too big for me over there. So i think the x three profiles held back to me somehow. Apple is i can know what apple can do and be group and this is very good by this. This aversion to telephoto in chinese phones right now xiaomi's doing it too is driving me nuts. I don't get it i want all of it. I don't care about microscope. it's cool. I don't care about a macro because an ultra wide can do macro like it is on this phone. It is on one plus pro phones

Washington, DC Statehood Bill Introduced By Senate Democrats

"Now you know this has been on the wish list of democrats for quite some time along with a promoting of puerto rico to statehood as well. Now that's compensation for a different time. But you had senator tom carper. He's democrat out of delaware leading over three dozen of his democrat colleagues to introduce companion bill for washington dc statehood gesture on tuesday. Now remember a similar. Bill passed the house last year. Now will face well pretty much. A democrat controlled senate to determine if dc will become the fifty first state but is that even possible. Well i found this piece. I pulled this back in early january out of the washington post. And it's pretty indepth piece about dc statehood. Bottom line is these. Dc statehood still faces a number of high hurdles not only in the narrowly divided senate but yes in public opinion as well. Think about this. A two thousand nine thousand nine gallup poll found that nearly two-thirds of us opposed dc statehood. So why is in dc already a state. well we need to look at the constitution washington. Dc's founding is enshrined in the constitution which provides that the district not exceeding the constitution. Not exceeding ten miles. Square would become the seat of the government of the united states now for a brief period of time after the city's creation back in seventeen ninety residents -joyed voting rights and were allowed to cast ballots as residents of maryland or virginia but those rights ended shortly after congress moved into town and the new capital in eighteen hundred and pass the district of columbia organic act of eighteen. O one the act stripped dc residents of their rights to vote in all federal elections including for president and gave congress oversight of the city. Have you ever seen a dc washing a plate license plate. You know what it says you know with. The slogan is taxation without representation. Now the district was not afforded presidential electors until the passage of the twenty-third amendment. Back in one thousand. Nine hundred sixty one. Its residents didn't get a non voting delegates in the house until nineteen seventy so begs the question. How can congress change this well. Those opposed to making dc estate have argued that statehood for dc can't happen without a constitutional amendment. They say that the founders intended the entire district to serve as the seat of federal government not as state but legislation put forth by non voting delegate. Eleanor holmes norton every year since nineteen ninety-one would not eliminate the seat of government that the constitution calls for in stead her bill which shrink the national capital to a small complex of federal buildings while allowing the rest of the district to become a state proponents of statehood for their part argue that this plan preserves federal enclave. Whose only requirement is that. It can't exceed ten square miles and escapes the need for a constitutional amendment. Nothing simple as that outstanding questions remain over. What would happen to the three electoral college votes. Currently afforded to the district when it becomes a smaller that role enclave. And some have wondered whether the twenty-third amendment would have to be repealed. So that the few residents of the federal enclave namely we're talking about those residing at sixteen hundred pennsylvania avenue don't retain them so what needs to happen for dc to become state. Well the bill to make these estate obviously has enough supports in the house to pass again and jordi leader steny hoyer pledged to bring it to vote with backing from speaker. Nancy pelosi by your indeed even though the senate is pretty evenly split. Well let's just say it's a tough road to hoe in the senate democrats occupy half the seats in that chambers. Thanks to the victories of ossoff and wore knock In georgia both of whom support would no surprise there. And then you've got vice president. Kamala harris in this fifty fifty split in the senate able to cast the tie breaking boat and she liked biden supports

"Best case scenario. I'm making direct eye contact with someone who put a mask on top of my face right. Yeah so i mean it will probably be. I would guess like maybe one third capacity. But that's still going to be like six thousand people so A lot Plan c. is where May have to be wrote And there will still be a limited audience. So it's kind of a compromise plan where it's sort of what junior eurovision was doing. Even though junior vision was kind of more like fully remote there were a couple of delegations that were in poland in person performing. And then there's plan d where there's no audience everything is remote rotterdam. Ahoy just turned into a big echoey studio where all the video feeds are sent in and the hosts are just presenting and here's iceland and then hits play on the vcr so we act wheels out the tv that the sub had yup yup and yes. Oh and it's all kind of based on vaccine rollout even though artists won't necessarily be required to get vaccinated needs which is a fun choice that i'm fine with. Yeah yeah so there's like it's a also treading into the area of your vision not being a political contests so there's just a lot of factors here. Which plans do you think is going to end up being selected at this point if you had to guess as a armchair expert epidemiology at this point like i feel like as not going to happen it could happen would not feel comfortable with a. I would feel like we were sitting on the couch watching that. Yeah that's a factor that i didn't even consider what's it gonna be like for the home audience. That's watching and i feel like the image for people at home. Currently vaccine stuff isn't going great in the states like if it's not going great globally the image of like a full like a full full stadium. Not more doesn't feel great to me like this one. I would say be is. The goal be is the goal. I feel like it's going to be receipt. I think that's right. I think we may be beyond d at this point. But i have a feeling it may end up being the as technicality. Where's the dutch. Delegation will be able to be there and probably the belgian Immediate neighbours yes. Immediate neighbors who feel fine coming over and yeah like i feel is going to be some combination of cd and like there's something that feels relatively equalizing of if some nations aren't able to come it really should only be a handful of nations in the in the gap. I think that makes a lot of sense. Yep but even even beast is just kinda even time. it's just completely stretch. Didn't like taffy at this point as not that far away and eighty yeah may ramped up like a hundred to two hundred percents of where it is right now. I think her for that to be a realistic scenario. Yeah like that. That is where i am sitting is like i would rather than focus on. How can we have the best possible. Iteration of something between c and d rather than try to go for something a or b level and have still feel incredibly unsafe and not the image. I don't want your vision to be a superspreader event like the last big superspreader event and it's no thank you. I think this is also being tempered by the. Us perspective where passing out is not going well at all but like i'd listeners elsewhere house vaccine rule out going where you are it could we. Could we actually be more optimistic about this. "I feel like they should have waited a day before giving us the auto qualifier list just to let those four songs have their day in the sun because as soon as the internet saw that one of the songs being performed the saturdays from k. No it was over. Yep there's a lot of discourse happening right now about is it too soon. Shouldn't this be space for numerous. I don't care like kato's album last year was fantastic. And they're still doing stuff together and like they had the most Telephone points a couple years ago. They would like their jury points. Please like they. They are technically the reigning tele champions so if norway serious about wanting to win eurovision. I think this is a very smart choice. I think the broadcasters would prefer to have alumni and people who like this is not their first rodeo As part of the process just in case things get very weird from a technical execution perspective whereas okay. This is somebody who's already been to your vision. They already all the ins and outs of what that process is like. And if things need to change like they don't have to be like newbies they can avoid newbies in the experience. I think that's the goal. Yes i completely agree as we keep getting more and more selections like. Oh a lot of familiar names. That's weird The more about the. Oh yeah no. They want people who know how this is supposed to go so that they had to spend all of their time explaining how normally it would be like this but this year. We're doing this. I'm very excited to hear what k- knows monument here sounds like especially since they've said that it's a slightly more grown up version of spirit in sky. Okay yeah like that. Could that could go a number of different ways but like yeah just seeing the progression they made from spirit in the sky to the singles releasing in the very long lead up to their album last year and seeing how they were developing and growing and figuring figuring out their voices. The trio I'm very excited to see like what the next step is for them. I agree there's another song happening on saturday. Kicks out of the dark reading through the the norwegian press. Release for all this this morning. Seeing everybody's credentials is great because like chicks has multiple number ones on spotify norway. Like that's that's a different metric than we usually see especially especially looking in this. Listen especially looking at. The selection. Has a whole yeah. It does look like they're bringing in a variety of performers kind of the australia decides model in a way. Yeah yeah i get that. Stavanger camera will be performing childhood streets. This this appears to be a man band that has formed themselves from from people who've done a lot of things like norwegian idol x factor Star wars the voice and then one of them also didn't abba tribute show. Yeah there was like a thing in quotations. While i was reading the thing i was like what v. elsewhere thank you for the music and i was like what is that. Is that a different reality competition. No it's not just like a stage show okay state show. That's probably more of a review than like a mama mia. They will be performing childhood streets. A couple of weeks from now. Cossio road julia performing feel again. He was the voice of norway. Two thousand seventeen. Atla patterson Will be performing world on fire in february which he has a whole bunch of credits like he has done all of the shows. He on x factor. Two thousand ten. He was on star wars in two thousand thirteen. He was on the hit in twenty fourteen. He was on. Shall we dance in two thousand eleven. So he's done the full circuit. Okay closing out the auto qualifiers. We have rain alexander fan favorite from last year with eyes wide open and like in the promo photo this time. He's kinda dressed like the penguin from batman who like last time. He was dressed like a viking. This time like the look screams. The penguin so here for it excellent. Yeah i i was very happy to see him on the auto qualifier list. Because i think he was owed an apology for all the shenanigans last year. All that gets started on saturday at one fifty pm eastern. Let's see the other exciting process happening this weekend Pity bottom is now we have song. Titles i am very intrigued by whatever. The roofs discotheque is very good title for a pop. song no further people appear to have dropped out but anything can happen in the rest of this week although the thing lithuanians process That i mean. I think it's already kind of not covert proof but the saturday shows except for the final last year. They were all pretaped. Anyway it was never a live show so it seems like they're already have a game plan for how to produce this in a way. That's going to be safe for all of the participants and still Producing you could show like i. I don't know if they're planning on having an audience for the performances. I would guess. Probably not. But i've not seen anything one way or the other. This should not actually change how the show is produced for them which which will be nice and if you wanna watch heat one of that that will be saturday at two pm eastern time here in the us if you head to. Our website drew what dot com slash calendar That'll take you to a page. That has all this information. Playlists everything And a google calendar that you can actually download and get Access to all those links and updates in your own personal calendar so that's super handy yet. The last thing that we wanted to talk about was a article that dropped last week. About what plan your vision may be coming with a as may approaches so with a lot of these selection shows that are happening. There's not going to be alive. Audience manifest isn't going to have one you k won't Dora announced that the show will not have a live audience. So it'll be a lot like the danish final last year which could be interesting. Hindsight you know really should have been assigned. Yeah yeah so much about that last weekend of the before times. Yes here in. The states. Like the grammy awards have been postponed. They've been moved to march fourteenth and Dr fauci who's been leading the coronavirus information on a national level here in the united states. He floated the idea. Recently that live music might be back in the fall So i don't know might be. Maybe we're still be wearing masks. While we enjoyed the live music but live music might be back such a backer. Who is the executive producer for the dutch. Broadcasters of for this year's contest said that there's going to be a decision on what the primary plan will be for eurovision sometime in early to mid february in the next couple of weeks plan. A is still the dream. But it's. I'm not sure that feels real rosie to me. The other piece of news is that they have set aside. Like a hotel block for the delegations but that just feels like covering your bases for for both plans. An yes and and that was one where it was just like. Oh well they blocked that like as soon as broader dam was announced twenty twenty one host city. Because that's what you do if you're you're hosting large scale events like you lock that down Just to review what the four plans are. There's plan a which is everything normal. You've got twenty thousand. People crowded into rotterdam ahoy as other people are singing at you plan. A is plan anxiety attack plan plan b. is reduced capacities of social distancing. People are still singing at you. But it's a little bit safer. And i think at this point plan. B. is.

"Okay mic what did you make of la la okay. So it reminded me of one of the entries from the twenty thousand nine french selection. Funny funny that it's coming up again in this episode but Yeah there was a song. porac ye. That just had this kind of like party vibe. They're just the cadence of the song was matching up really nicely and i can sort of get the sense that it's weaving together a lot of the characteristics of inspirations for eden but i don't think it's really showcasing eden it feels like sort of How american idol contestants can sometimes get shoehorned into pop song archetypes and like. She's just kind of changing costumes throughout the song. But like oh yeah. We don't actually know who eaten is which makes no sense to me like she she. She is her own person and i think she demonstrated that very clearly last year. What do you think of this one feels like all these are sort of taking various bits and pieces of Libby from last year and sort of taking them off in their direction and ula is doing the thing that federally beaded of doing like three to four languages quickly clicking between gears and hopping from one to the next the next but it doesn't have anything to say is kind of weird and just like how surface level it is And like my main notice that like this feels like something that would be like. An album interlude stretched out to like a full three minutes. Because i think of these three this one was the shortest of the demos I liked the vibe of it. I like the mood of it but the more with. It's just kind of empty calories and like like pop music is. It's fine if that is the case. But like i don't feel like this has the legs to get all the way to rotterdam. I do think that this track is the most interesting of agreeing that you're saying. But i think if it were to win and then go to the semi-finals like it would just get buried in a field of seventeen. It's interesting but not in a way that works at eurovision yet like it's not it's not sticky. It's not sticky enough. And i think was this. The one in the Youtube clip of her driving around in that car like singing along with tracks were cheap. Loved the lyrics. Yes yeah which is like ooh. You just like if you shot that. Yeah yeah do the take. Where like you. Nail the lyrics on this one. Yeah so i'm just disappointed. I caught that too. I'm just like oh is this. Is this not the one that that she's feeling the most Yeah there is that element to so these are the three. It's going to be one of these. I think that la la is is interesting but not no way. that's going to work at eurovision. So if if that's the one that wins they're not gonna make the final like would call it now and it feels like a tough sell a very tough sell. Yeah i mean. I think of the three set me free as maybe the one that has the most that they can work with like in terms of staging and just not bumming. Everybody is okay so like setting aside lawler love as i have said cannot with the chorus no thank you that leaves me with set me free and i agree that the they can do stuff with it. I still think that's like generic pop song number three but they will have two months to really have to like sujit. Yeah and figured out so hopefully even though it's supposed to be the final versions coming out on january eighteenth. it's not the final final version. Please please please fix under underscore us this. One underscore v. seven. Yes best of luck to israel again. Voting opens up on january nineteenth for these songs that were that will be dropping next monday The other big piece of news that drops today in particular is norway. One of the big things kicking off this weekend is the melody grand prix. Stick carlson the music director. A recent interview says there are four standard entries which apologize to all of the countries that are not those four standouts. Wow that's like what twenty two other songs. twenty two through policies. you stig. Carlson just thinks your garbage to be fair. The article that i read about that he wasn't quoted directly as saying that and it may have been a case of. He gave examples of four strong. So he for entries in the email and didn't write about any of the other to the reading. This assumed that there's only four And then today these songs for heat one and the six auto qualifiers announced which just to quickly recap norway's doing this year we're going to have five rounds of heats that we're going to have a second chance round and they were going to have a final this week. Songs are out We have seen hollings. Elevate your faith faith. Beady bells playing with fire and blessed muffins. Let loose mike. If you listen to the songs i have. I have also listened to the songs. They're fine. Which one do you think it's going to make it out. I really have nothing to say about any of these four. They're all like you said. I fine although i will say beatty bells playing with fire is doing some interesting stuff. And it's growing on me really yes I thought it was a remarkable. Okay it says that. I have no remarks about it. Feel like also i've been listening to bunch of jesse where lately and i feel like it's doing some of the state of she's doing right now But i also want to see what the live oak was like that. When i feel like absolutely if the lie bookl- of not good no the one that i'm interested in seeing live is let loose just because the track itself is it. It's dance track and there. Aren't that many lyric. So it's just going to be all performance. And i'm interested to see how that's going to work yes and like i. I like the idea of the blah's mafia and of it being like a very brass-driven dance sort of a deal But also i. If i want like a brass driven dance video at eurovision. I wanted to come from the balkans apologies to nordic brass artists. But yes that someone else for the wedding. So i knew where the good brass music comes from and i feel like i have to talk myself into liking let loose. I like it in theory. But then i listen to him. It gets fine and you guys left twenty seconds on the table. That's a brave choice. You can do like yeah. This one's different. But i'm not sure it's different in an effective way but bulls. We'll see how the audience response to it. Yeah yes and then just a couple of lessons and again like the live. Oak could be great. Elevate feels like if Set me free junior cops number three. This is judy. Pop song number seven and then faithfully faith. I had better see like liechtenstein. Gdp worth the pyro on that stage for this song. I wrote down. It's kind of heavy metal by way of a mighty wind and yes that's such a good description of it but but then doesn't that make it spinal tap since its christian guests. It's very spinal tap. It it's that specific. It's it's like it's your vision friendly metal but not in not in the way that i like it. Although the more i listened to the more it grows on me. But oh no apologies to these songs Especially how they're going to be upstaged by the auto qualifier. Oh they're gonna..

"Fact. I don't know what to do with this one. Yeah it's it's fine the baselines really good. The baseline is good. You'll like it does a good job at the key. Change at the end but also earned teaching. Okay okay okay. Got it on the other hand. Like i did feel like by the time it got to the keychains. Like well this is gonna happen and also i felt like at that point. We had kind of lost the plot from the first part of the song. Oh yes we start at one place in like. By the time we get to the key word like a completely different time zone yeah. There is no cohesive story of this. It really does feel kind of like a collection of half hooks and it's kind of throwing it all together. Really it's reminding me a lot of instant bueno's entry for australia last year. Yes where. It's like. All of these hoots and clicks and ticks pop music not quite cliches. Somebody read that book at the library but writing pop song you get to the chorus as soon as possible because like this one immediately. Yeah but it's like the whole song is just kind of like start at five works its way up to a seven and just kind of hangs out in that mid range like it. It's just not going anywhere like it also feels like this is a song that they would love for it to open up the show. They're in the second half of the first semi finals. So it's not happening. Then it could happen if it qualifies to the grand final and gets into the first half but you got to qualify for their. Yeah and like the first semi final. There are a lot of powerhouses in there. So i don't think a half hearted effort is going to be enough to get through. Okay any other thoughts about this one new. I have thoughts about but like it's it's more than.

"I want to like this one. This one feels like the thumb is on the scale for it a little bit more than the other two talking about how there could be tweaks before things come out like i cannot get past the first part of the chorus of this one like like i was already sort of tensing up during the first verse and just like oh no. This is going to be a song about the times we live in now. It isn't it sad that i haven't gotten to go out partying which i am not against that at your vision. Twenty twenty one. Because again i want to be up. I want us to be celebrating rather than commiserating. But i cannot with. Love is my disease. I want to infect. My generation dislike israel. Read the room Yeah in in my notes. In all caps i have this. Chorus is insane. The specific thing. I have in my notes. I am not here for her to immunity of love. Oh know how do you stage this in a way. That doesn't dumb everybody out like either everybody in the room is going to be trying to dance while also listening to the age of the song sokaia. Yeah or ends up having to be a remote performance based on whatever scenario eurovision ends up going with. That's going to be such. Be a real bummer. That reminds us of of granada. Ledley the house. Please please stop. I'm trying to think of song that was so on the news about the current moment that the song was about you think jamal. Nineteen forty four which was arguably very pointed about what things were like in two thousand sixteen but it was connecting it to a similar historic event. So there was that kind of not trapped in the amber of that year. If that makes sense but yes yeah. I really hope that. We aren't going to end up with forty songs about the year. Two thousand twenty. Because i don't want that know the other thing that this reminds me of and it's another thing with israel in recent history is that before the twenty nineteen contests there was going to be a show airing on israeli tv about a suicide bomber at a at a large international song contest. That looked eerily like your vision. And like the you. And i think ya'll assad had to come and be like. Hey guys this is in poor taste. You can hear this later but not now And this is just another area. Where i'm just like okay was. Let's say this is a different sense of humor but like i don't think that this is being played as a joke. Yeah and i don't think this is necessarily in poor taste. I think it's just kind of more catering to a marketplace that may not necessarily want this product. Yeah i would weirdly be fine with this song a year from now we've had actual immunization happen. Yeah i would. I would be able to more favorably think about. I don't need no medication yet. Like i think if this were outside of the current context. I think it's really is a case of like to sued says absolutely just too soon. It's so on the nose but it's got a good beat and you can sorta dance to it so seven points. I don't know anything about this way. That is just. I cannot okay not long but also like five minutes. Wait five minutes. Yeah yeah so the next one possibly on on that same wave.

"Welcome to the euro at the number one two for the week of january eleventh twenty twenty one. I'm ben smith. And i'm joined today by mike mccomb. Hey mike hello. We are a pair of americans. Try to make sense of the european a song contest and this we will be talking about the news but but not that news. Not that news do it has been a particularly news news heavy half of a week just a half. Yeah i guess it has a castle so much longer. Yeah no lemon. It's tuesday a lot has happened in the united states for the like if you somehow have not seen the news as i said a few times last year. I'm glad that we have this little space where we get to focus on very silly things and have real hot opinions on selection season instead of just sort of the general state of the nation. Let's just kick things off with greece. Yes when we last left them to find it was pulling one song name out of a glass jar of five and promising more to come and it turns out. That's the only song we're ever gonna hear pulled from that jar because greece's announced the stefania. It will sing last dance in. Rotterdam final recordings place over the weekend of videos expected sometime in february. I recall reading somewhere that apparently it started as a ballot. And i assume that means that did not finish one so that will be something to keep an eye out for I wonder if that means that. It's kind of doing the chris lead viola thing where it starts out as one song and ralph siegel that dream team. I don't think it's no pirker. Off has a very strict rule for his assistant to not let row seat will calls through. Ignore that number four. That's where we are up to two no three song titles that song titles yes although as one side also coming out last week was a little bit more information about francis selection process and they've assembled the jury and it has a lot of. It's actually a really well. Formed jury some of the participants include eurovision alumni so amir from two thousand sixteen duncan lawrence from twenty nineteen heard of him Natasha's saint-pierre from two thousand one. Sean paul gauthier the fashion designer. Who's had relationship with your vision. I believe he did cheetahs gown for two thousand fourteen and I know he's worked with dana international and probably a few other people throughout the years and chaman body who was one of the finalists in the last national selection. That france did in twenty nine hundred. Nineteen yes we had. It does and then a handful of other performers celebrities from The french scene there are twelve songs that are competing. Most of them are on spotify. And we have a french spotify playlist that you can find on our spotify profile. We also have it linked in our show notes and the way it's supposed to work is off. Do all the performances. There'll be a vote and the top seven songs. Plus one wildcard that selected by the jury will go through to a super final where it's Another votes that's a fifty fifty split between public votes and the jury which seems like a lot. I had assumed that the initial selection of the seven from the twelve was happening before any of the televised portion. Oh interesting yeah the article. That i've read didn't indicate that but there's nothing to indicate that it wouldn't be that makes sense. It makes a lot more sense. That makes sense that like okay. We're not going to air twelve songs. Being performed than do around voting then have a super final of eight unless they don't have the eight perform again which it that happens. I think that's the way that norway does it where they cut it down to four and then it's just voting opened again but the rare haven't noted right now is it's real weird but And then the other complicating factor. Is they still don't know win. This is going to happen. it's today And the french broadcaster is insistent that they are going to have this national final originally was supposed to be in some city outside of paris and they're just like nope we're going to do it tv studio in paris because of life Yeah whoa and also if they don't hold it in paris are they going to have the eiffel tower in the background. How will we know france Maybe it'll just be at the eiffel tower. Maybe they'll just have to do it outdoors and it's like it will be on top of the arc triomphe that seems like something where they would have needed to get permits for that by now so this may be happening on tiktok just random videos on their phones and like try to hide everything like a private exactly. Yeah so still waiting on details for that. I believe they were initially aiming for some time in january but already halfway through the month so They better get on that soon. Francis figuring stuff out later this week. Finland will be announcing their artists for u. k. Other be seven artists competing and they will all be announced on wednesday. One song will be dropping over the next two weeks of weekdays so the first one will drop on thursday. The last one will drop on friday january twenty first so a little treat at lunchtime for everybody who's following the finish process. I just thought to myself each little saw me as a treat which some eac is the finish would like the ammonium salt. Qa like it or you do not. I think that's most liquorice. My name is kristen. Restore okay another one. That would be hearing from shortly Sweden sweden in the past week or so keeps dropping guest host left and right for this year's fest From what i can tell creature bjorkman is going to be our primary host but every every week is going to be a cavalcade of guests including the most recent announcement pernilla who sang piccadilly circus in the eighties. Yeah and the the other exciting is that we will have an official running order on wednesday. My spreadsheet will appreciate that. I'm looking forward to that when just remind myself who. All's in the mix. We have the mamas we have some some people who pop up every couple of years. Like arvin garner how are we stacking the deck here. Our we arranging this. That's something to look forward to this week. And then mel festival is getting started in just a couple of weeks. Yes it's almost here. Yes also happening in less than two weeks. From when this episode drops israel will be announcing their selection so We said last week. That voting was open for their selection. That was incorrect. Voting doesn't open until next tuesday because the songs are officially dropping Next monday january eighteenth. I'm like wait there. They're officially dropping next monday but like they're like hanging out there in the open. Yeah that was what. I was going to say where it wouldn't be vinci's without leaks again. It just kind of takes you back to twenty one thousand nine hundred win. Israel's broadcaster really had a firm hold on the communication channels of everything that was happening. So yeah the three songs that are up for consideration for eden are called la la love. Set me free and la la and leaks there could be some tweaks between now and then from What what is floating out there. And what the final versions are going to sound like. We thought we'd talk about the three songs as they are right now. The first one we.

How Covid-19 changed Wine Consumer Behaviors in China

"Today. I'm going to be talking about cove. Ed's impact on china's y market and how those impacts are affected consumers buying behaviors. First of all this year. The buzzword we be hearing is lockdown but in china when we talk about lockdown. It's in the strictest sense you know one house. Hoed can only allow person to go out. Once a day to purchase or the necessities unlike in europe or in the. Us where you have the luxury to go out and do a lot of tours in china. It's really strict on in areas that are most affected by the pandemic. You're not even allowed to go all. There's a community officer who is on standby just to send all the necessities to you to your door. So this is the context where talking about when we want to understand covets impacts on china this is also the circumstance under which a lot of the business have to operate for three months from late january to april. So this is something i want to want. Everyone who's listening in to bear in mind to keep it in the back of her head on back of a mind to understand the couvert impacts. So i applaud. I'm gonna talk about cove ed's impact on china's wine imports so what happened to wine poured by the end of january. China had locked down the whole country as a result restaurants hotels essentially closed and miss the most important chinese new year sales for anyone wondering how big and how important is chinese new year for a lot of wine merchants. A lot of the lot of them who that i talked to toad may chinese new year wine sales account for roughly twenty percent or even up to thirty percent of their new sales so imagine that seven day period was lost okay and then imagine that period was extended for three months. So that's the challenge facing a lot of the importers in china. Of course logistics were delayed because quickly the pandemic spread from china to the rest of the world even when china in may and june recovered from the pandemic countries like france. And you know you us were in the depth of the pandemic so that affected global logistics while okay so we have the latest figures from the china customs at a showed. Import room declined by thirty percent. Thirty point eight percent to three hundred forty seven million leaders in poor value declined roughly thirty percent as well to u. s. one point eight four billion. This is quite significant. Because i want to draw attention to the fact that last year china's one import value already declined. We saw roughly ten percent job in volume terms and one percent in value terms because of the economic slowdown and trade war between china and us so the downturn we are saying this year is a continuation of what happened last year as well so that you know have a projection for what is to expect an what's to calm right okay. So the next one. I am going to talk about because of the job in wine imports on how affected merchants consumers and the price points are with saying on the shelves. Merchants of course when you have stalks that meant to be depleted for chinese new year that still sitting in the warehouse. What do you do when you have uncertainties facing forward more cautious. You becoming more cautious with your spending what to buy how to budget. That's natural response. A market sudden seeing a lot of merchants exiting the market on. Fortunately one of the examples with sane is from jovial. You guys are familiar with jovial. So basically jovial is a wine and agriculture importing company backed by the tech giant noval five years ago when it entered the market to stop important distribution winds. It costs a lot of and naturally they had a peak. I think around twenty key bruns including the world's biggest Organic winery and madonna in in chile and also jong here moi x. families wines earlier this year due to the pandemic it's general manager. Said they're suspended in the wine business. This is not a small one time. Importer were looking at a company. That's actually has quite a scale dots. The direct impact of the pandemic unperfect cards of course a lot of wineries and importers were having zero sales in february In particular consumers when you have job uncertainties because of the pandemic what are you gonna do. You're becoming more cautious with your spending. You're cutting all the non essential standings unfortunate wine is counted as among unlike you know maybe in france or italy or in the us consumers of course they're trading down if they are buying winds at all they. Are you know really budgeting what to buy. You know what is the best value. What is the most affordable wine out in the market. This can be reaffirmed by an expert on expert data. We just saw from burgundy out from january to september export volume to china hong kong jumped by roughly thirty percent and in value terms jumped by roughly around twenty percent and we see some increases in areas where the balaj ablation or shaba lease on those kind of increases Guan crew premier cru in terms of red and white store decreasing price. Wines priced under one hundred orrin. B is the most popular category one hundred. That's about fifteen. Us dollars

Wisdom and Fear

"October seemed like a good month to talk about the topic of fear with Halloween and all the preparations gone at least in the US and other Western cultures. This is the month that you see all the movies on TV or about horror films and scary things and I. Thought I would be fun to talk about the concept of fear from the Buddhist perspective. And I think this is a fascinating topic to explore because all of us experience fear fear is a universal thing. We all experience it and is completely natural like all other emotions fears just an emotion. There are however learned fears and there are hardwired fears I recently read an article that talked about how. For, example, the the fear that we experience a loud noises. That's something that's hardwired in us that we don't necessarily learn that it's from day one that we fear loud noises. Also, the fear of falling seems to be one of those fears that is hardwired in US and I'm sure there are others. But for the discussion of fear I think first and foremost, it's hopeful to frame our fears within the Lens of skillful fears and unskillful fears. The Buddha taught that some see something to fear where there is nothing to fear and some see nothing to fear where there is something to fear. And this is more or less along the lines of what I WANNA talk about with this topic of fear. Useful fear may prepare us to take skillful action while unuseful fear only leads to unskillful action, and that's how I like framing. That's high like thinking about my own fears. For example, a skillful fear would be avoiding touching a poisonous snake while skillful fear may be fearing the coiled up hoes in the dark shed because I think it's a snake but an actuality, it's only coiled up hose. So that's kind of along the lines of of the Buddhist perspective of fear I'm far less concerned with talking about the fear that we think of when we think of fear of the dark fear of heights. No, I'm much more interested in talking about fears like the fear of rejection that may cause us to live skillfully a good cause us to live an. Entire life where we're not fully in harmony with our authentic selves with how we actually think and feel because if I fear, for example, the judgment of others I may be experiencing unskillful actions in my life living life a certain way to avoid the fear of judgment of others that may be an unskillful fear So that's what I want to talk about The when we talk about fear, we think of the ultimate fear, right perhaps the fear of death, the fear of separation from our loved ones the fear that we experience from a uncertainty and the unknown those are big concepts think about and I think they're good to think about. But for practical purposes, I think it's more important to think of the fears that affect our day to day lives and a lot of the experiences that were having in our day to day lives. And for me, it's important to explore. Where does my fear come from? You've heard me mentioned before in this podcast, the notion of the Buddhist teaching of craving, which is essentially what will suffering that the moment. I want things to be other than how they are suffering is what arises or discontent dissatisfaction anguish. However, you WanNa word that. But that feeling that arises when I want something to be other than how it is seems to be very intricately connected to this notion of fear I'm fearing how something is because it's not matching how I think it should be and that's one of the ideas that is talked about and Buddhism on the topic of fear, and again it's it's wanting things to be other than how they are and. I think what makes this worse as far as fear goes is that were experiencing a new layer of fear.

Against All Odds: Lone Survivor

"Some survival stories hinge on strength of will a person's raw determination to live other times science steps in and saves the day Anna Hogan home worked as a radiologist at the University Hospital of North Norway. She made history there in nineteen ninety nine but on the operating table. Her remarkable incident began with a skiing trip after work with some colleagues. They were all avid skiers who were familiar with the local mountains and the conditions that day were ideal sunny with lots of fresh powder. They were only a few runs in. When Anna tripped losing her skis tumbled and slid toward a frozen stream when she hit the ice broke and her upper half was pulled into the frigid rushing. Water her friends ray able to reach her in grabbed her boots before the current could pull her all the way under. They phoned for help beneath the water. Bogging home struggled upward and managed to reach the airspace under the ice. She could breathe but her clothes were soaked. In near frozen water drowning now had to fight hypothermia to see who would get her first. By the time the Rescue Team arrived hacked a hole in the ice and halt her out. Bogging home had been submerged for nearly an hour and a half. Her skin was pure white. Her pupils were blown. She had no heartbeat. The Medevac helicopter. Ride took another hour during which the rescuers performed. Cpr At more information on the meat. Mak Your brain this piloting left to its own devices. The human body likes to be around ninety eight degrees Fahrenheit or thirty seven degrees Celsius all sorts of complex involuntary automatic. Things happen to keep you as close to that number as possible but the world is a cold place. Sometimes when the body census you getting too cold it begins to protect you from the outside in since air polls heat away from the surface of the body. Blood vessels in the skin begin. Constricting less blood is going to your arms and legs and more is staying in your core to keep your internal organs warm. This leaves -ceptable to frostbite. But you've got bigger problems. If the vessel constriction doesn't stop the temperature drop. The body tries to make more heat by moving the muscles. You'll start to shiver. Usually from the chest muscles outward. This too can be a problem if it goes on too long as it tears through your nutritional reserves and taxes heart increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke if your body temperature drops below ninety five degrees Fahrenheit thirty five Celsius hypothermia sets in your blood pressure drops and your breathing becomes shallow. This means less oxygen is getting to your brain which can bring on slurred speech. Confusion nonsensical action and none of which will be particularly helpful. Arctic Explorer Robert Falcon Scott referred to this in his writings on his nineteen eleven expedition as a half thawed brain. And there's a truly bizarre reaction that happens sometimes paradoxical undressing the freezing person suddenly feels like they're burning up and strips off all their clothes so now you're dead and everybody can see your hoo-ha as the cooling continues. The brain and other organs begin to shut down when the helicopter landed at University. I was just like. Oh my gosh like my brain was like what is wrong with me see. I'm so not cool like I didn't even know kate like who she was. Do you know Ellen. I loved her speech yet. Hilarious it was but also very genuine giving credit to Oh my Gosh Carol Burnett Burnett yes Michelle Williams also had a very Feminist speech that was really cool That was basically talking about Having the ability to choose wouldn't you have children and with whom and be able to find that balance And then I thought so I was like oh I'm like I like love her her when she talks like I love her and then sometimes I'm like get annoyed with her when she doesn't talk but when she talks I'm like okay. This is why I like you. I didn't like her so much in Dawson's creek though she annoyed me so much Dawson's Austin's creek see once again so every time we go to Juliette my didn't want to know that I actually have to force myself to watch TV. So the Golden Globes were over the weekend and the Golden Globes as always like. It's the party award. Show the also down in Hampton and they drink and they just drink drink drink drink throughout the whole thing so it's a lot of fun and so a lot of times like everybody's like getting drunk especially they don't win they get real boost up so it's way to cope with exactly Zo. Libya Coleman was nominated for best actress. In a television series crown. I don't like her in the crown know you. I don't know why he's so good. WHO's the other one that I like her so much? So just side note. I was looking at so. If you notice like Claire. Foy and Vanessa Nisa Kirby both have beautiful blue eyes. Because it's reflective of the Queen and Princess Margaret Right rely. They haven't Blue Eyes. Olivia Coleman in Helena. Bonham Carter do not have lives. They have Brown eyes and so I was like interesting like what's going on so I started doing some research as to like well. How did it go from like clarify and Vanessa Kirby having blue eyes and then to Olivia Colman in Helena Bonham Carter having Brown eyes and so they said that they were actually like having them put right like blue contact lenses lenses but like it look like Olivia Colman and like it just kind of like masked they're they're acting acting like it made it look really like sorting fake and so they were like okay so no contacts anymore and so they got to keep their brown? Is I feel like Olivia Colman. You did a beautiful job oric and she won.

Market Update

"That was an interesting eighteen or so hours in the global markets wasn't it no sooner had we finished up an explainer on how the markets can price things in it if it knows those things are calm and then something came at the markets somehow we're not expecting there was a missile attack last night they may not really too belligerent statement from president from this morning and somehow everything was fine we've called Amy Myers Jaffe for some context on this she is a long time Middle East analyst also now a senior fellow at the council on foreign relations Amy walking program thank you for having me let's do a quick got check your this news last night I'm sure you as I and many other people check the futures market what was your what was your initial reaction well I think that it makes sense that the markets calm down afterwards of course were were hoping for a peaceful I'll come up for conflict resolution but I think the markets may be a little optimistic in the sense that there's a long row to hoe here on a very long and stubborn conflict in the Middle East so maybe people are a little too optimistic this is if I could if I could go to my Donald Rumsfeld dictionary this is the very definition of unknown unknowns right yes the president was moderately diplomatic today but there's so much yet to come there's a lot of water that needs to be crossed and I think the markets reflect that in the price of gold now course gold is also strong because we're expecting a US China trade deal and we're expecting a weaker dollar but in the end I do think that that hefty gold price art reflects the sentiment that we're not out of the woods yet talk to me about oil for a second would you kind of make sense it is down hard today long term now I know that all the analysts are saying long term down for oil but my feeling is there still a lot of geo political risks to be had we still have tremendous on rest on the ground if the Iraqi population is unhappy with the way things go you know you could see or workers decide that they're going to join the anti government protesters armed or if there's a breakdown in negotiations between the United States around in Iraq and the United States quote unquote gets kicked out you could see sanctions on Iraq's oil because Iraq has been doing these swaps with Iran these energy swaps with Iran and that would be in a logical next step of things break down are you called at all by the fact that the United States is such a major producer of oil now that helps me from the point of view of worrying about the US economy if the price of oil goes way up there many states the benefit now because we have so many states that are oil producing the didn't used to be oil producing and of course our trade deficit isn't as badly hurt the problem is you know you want a high we might not take a road trip this summer for oil prices are very high and also we know from past oil shocks that American stop buying cars when the price of gasoline is going up in the course that would be very bad for the economy because that's a big part of the GDP of the United States okay so short to medium term what are you watching well I'm more watching sort of how it plays out of course in the Middle East I think that's a very major risk I want to see on that that US China trade deal comes forward and and what form and then I think the markets you know the Eurasia group which is eight geopolitical risk organization says the United States is the number one geo political risk in the world today so I do think the U. S. selection depending on which way it swings could be a major feature in financial markets also I think we have to watch that very closely your age group for co founder Ian Bremmer question your marketplace morning report all the time Amy Meyers Jeffery she's at the council of foreign relations in New York Amy thanks a lot appreciate your time your thoughts thank you
