ACC schedule includes Notre Dame, 10 conference games

"We're pleased to be joined. Now by our colleague NAP Fortuna nobody's more plugged in AC and also Notre Dame who is now at least for one football season a member of the ACC we were just talking a little bit offline map, but it's been kind of a whirlwind where this meeting of the president's for for Wednesday we knew about it for. A while and they were gonNA have poor. I. Was they're gonNa vote on one of few schedule models and then the day before it became no, they're not ready to vote. It's GonNa get pushed back a week and then all of a sudden band with almost no warning there was a full press release with the whole schedule model on everything. What happened. Like everything else when it comes to college football news amid pandemic I think everyone is learning things from anyone other than the primary source. So to speak I mean this was a rare case where a reported him break this story that the League was able to put this story out on its own terms and I think. Being that this was a president driven decision that probably shouldn't be too surprising because those guys are the ultimate. Shock collars when it comes to weather there will there won't be football. This fall but. Athletic Directors were not on that Board of Governors meeting call today they had. Kept them abreast of what they were talking about him models and so forth. But. As you said, I mean I was told as recently as yesterday. Tuesday that. The eighties were not ready to present a model that they were ready to go with just in light of the MARLINS fiasco with the. MLB. On Monday the evergreen situation going on there they still wanted to to to flesh things out and. figure out what the best approaches and I do think it's the irony of all ironies that as soon as the ACC puts out this press release, our friend Ross Stellar over sports illustrated has a report in the SEC is going to go conference only which. In many ways I can't help but think contradicts what the ACO is trying to accomplish right when they want to keep that one non-conference late open. Matt. Let me ask you this. So, as part of this deal Notre Dame is gonNA share the TV revenue from its home games with the rest of the members. How how big of a concession is that for them and was you? had been a stumbling block before and what do you think was in jacks bricks mind when when this kind of deal was presented to him I think operating under the assumption here for the sake of this conversation that there will be a season. I. I think that's a pretty big concession Notre Dame that's a deal as a private school that. Is Not public. We don't know the details I mean we. A. Very strong. I guess if you will that it's in the range of fifty million dollars or so and that it's significantly less than what they would be getting. From TV rubbing new distribution standpoint if they had joined the conference fully but I don't think that's a small matter that Notre Dame is is all in on the ACC at least for this year that they will be sharing that revenue in that they'll be you know. Frankly the big picture first time in one, hundred, Fifty, eight years of Notre, dame football they're going to interest season competing for a conference championship I mean that's that's very very. Big Ding even say finishing third place right they don't even come close to qualifying for they see if the season goes on just the fact that we're saying that that Notre Dame fans are reading that in hearing that and learning that about their school today I. think that is a very, very big headline when you talk about the Notre Dame, not just as program Business Itution, it's extraordinary I don't think you can understate how I mean they're they're the it's one of those issues or or griping points that. For my whole career I mean it's just been a constant. Why won't they join a conference? Somebody should force them to join a conference and then a permanent obviously but something finally. Put them in a position where they. Had to join a conference and I don't know the giving away the TV money. You know I don't I don't have the numbers, but that could end up being awash because they don't make that much from NBC and if they also get to now get a bigger share a full share of the you know the larger. ACC, ESPN deal I mean for all we know. They're making more money out of it. I don't know but the fact that they. So how how you know the Notre Dame fan base like how are they going to be feeling about this? There's the independence is such a point of pride obviously. But also if they didn't do this, there was a decent chance they were gonNA, end up with like a six game schedule. I think the initial reaction will be surprised in disappointment. Now, those feelings may linger throughout the course of this twenty twenty football season or they could be gone Tuesday when the Board of Governors of the NCAA makes a ruling on. How if and how the season will proceed and I can't help but think I may sound cynical here. But part of me wonders if it in the back of the decision makers minds at Notre Dame, they know what? Like the silent part is out loud. So to speak, they just don't think that season it's going to be feasible and if it makes everyone happy. Everything copacetic to just say, yes and concede to have everyone move forward in as unified of a front as possible under one umbrella as the ACC. then. They were willing to do that and maybe could. Bank that goodwill on the back end, I don't know that. That's me kind of theorizing here digging out loud. But I do think that headlined just seeing the press release seeing Notre Dame eligible for a conference title game I think that is a not insignificant. It's just like you said it's a conversation it's a question. I it's taken up. You know a chapter of your book God knows how many hours of our time on twitter at a mailbags and so forth t to hear the words Notre Dame, and let's say, Hey, you know they do play Clemson on their schedule and it's No divisions US here. So the top. Winning percentage teams go hypothetically. They could lose the CLEMSON and beat Clemson or be Clemson lose clemson. For the ACC title, I'm just picturing right now they're hockey team is currently the back to back big ten champions I'm trying to picture a big time championship. A banner. Compton. Ice Pavilion. A right down the road from an ACC championship banner at Notre Dame Stadium if the season out there, and if they were to to win the League because that would be pretty pretty funny. It would seem like it would make them more likely though for this to at some point, be permanent because I the argument I've always heard is nor named loves the aspect of of the uniqueness of not being. like everybody else, and at least for this year with all the craziness that's going on, they're going to be like everybody else to a large degree and find out they really. Like, Hey, this is cool. Seriously

Interview With Andrew Bernstein

"In his lengthy career. He's developed many friendships, not least of which was with Kobe Bryant with whom he collaborated the book. The Mamba, mentality how I play. And career special not because of the many iconic image he's made, but because he's demonstrated that he is the kind of man who puts in the extra effort and time to be a great photographer, a good father and a good man. This is about an ex in welcome back to the candidate frame. A first off welcome. Welcome to the show. It's have you thank you very much happy to year. Always Nice to talk to a legend. Old? I know. We talk a lot about your career as a sports photographer and that's we're going to spend a lotta time doing but I always to talk to sports, photographers or anyone who's been covering the game for a long time, always like hearing the story of the first live event smart event that they ever went to. That was like significant for them. What would that be? The first one I shot like no other one shot, but. went to maybe as a kid well, that's a great question I would have to say a grew up. A mets fan I. also a Rangers Fan growing up. I remember distinctly go into a myths game with my dad. I probably was maybe seven or eight. And, we were sitting behind home plate at Shea Stadium frankly sort halfway up, maybe third deck or something in. A foul ball team our way straight back. Identity shoved me out of the way in cod with one round. Tremendous amount it's been going. You know I'll never forget that I'm glad you remind me of that. That was fifty something years ago. An amazing that's A. Great Memory have first game. Yeah, well, it's better than getting in the head with a puck. But it would. No it was, it was a great memory. I had that ball forever I. Don't know what happened to it. In various moves over the years on the hockey side remember going to see the Rangers play in back. In the day we used to Go the old Madison Square Garden. This is the garden that was up on Tenth Avenue. I believe before they built the new garden in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy one. And the old guard, and had these pillars that you know. The new garden had the suspended ceiling. We made it so revolutionary. The Old Guard was Lee elda auditorium in at these pillars came down, and they sold seats literally behind the pillars that would call obstructed view seats. Added stamped on the ticket obstructed view. And you, literally sitting behind the pillar, and that's where me, the kid with always stupid behind the pillar. Every single time by Dan we get the tickets were like fifty cents. So that's what my earliest memories ago to raise your AIDS, I went to I can't remember which was first where there was a rams game at the coliseum that was my first, or whether it was dodger game. Experienced that I, remember was just the noise of so many people. And just it's unlike any other feeling I ever had were have dislike. Thousands of thousands of people around you at the same time, and there's something that I think is. Very lowering about that whether you are a sports fan as Lords player in your case of a photographer and talked to me about the intoxication of just that feeling at that sound. And, what it does for you especially when you're out there virtually in the center of it, it's still funny and bringing this up because the last. Or so this is gonNA sound really weird, but I've had this crazy ringing in my ear might. Equally right, it never experience, so go to the doctor. Get a hearing test the whole thing that they do. It comes back I have like twenty percent hearing loss at the high frequency, not unusual for my age. The audiologist says Mrs Wonder What kind of let me ask you. What kind of work do you do? I said well sports photographer you in noisy environments. She says I said. When's the last time we were in one? Four months ago. Well the ever experiences when you're in a loud arena or stadium I should not consciously. She's a will. Maybe you haven't withdrawal surgical. Rain you this consciously? Hearing it because it was so used to hearing it for forty years, isn't that? It's so bizarre.

Seattle Kraken: NHL announces name of 32nd franchise

"These story of the week the Seattle thirty two's have a name. They are the Seattle cracking before we drill down and getting some of the. Pacific says a Sandy Atlantic about this. How important was the events of this week for Seattle for the NHL? Like how big a deal is this for the League? It's a huge deal and first of all. It was a fun topic Jeff. Life is hard for people right now. And that was a fun couple of hours. The reveal the video, the look at the Jersey. The name like whether people like the name or didn't like it. They were kind of laughing like Whoa. That's really off the board and I know you don't like it. Because of the nicknames that can come from it, but I love it. It's different. It's different for hockey. It's a step out of the. The normal, it's bold. It's it's a change. It's a try it something new, and I think hockey badly needs that. There were a couple of interesting things I've found out in some conversations number one when they were talking about the Jersey with the people from Adidas one of the things they were saying is we have to imagine what it would look like to lift the Stanley Cup? In this Jersey we can't think that it's going to. To look terrible to lift the Stanley Cup in this Jersey and I liked the Jersey. I liked that way of thinking i. think that's very big. The other I heard that was interesting, was that they chose the name crack and I, and then they went about the identity, the logo and the Jersey and the like the story line of the cracking, and there were some people who heard the name and they were like, are you? You, sure about this, is this really a good idea? And then they started to see the logo and the identity behind it, and they bought in and a lot of times when expansion teams come in. They won't reveal the name the logo end the Jersey at the same time they'll do maybe name and logo at once and Jersey later. This was a win because they did all three at once and I think that's sold people. I think they had to do it that way. And I I think you're right and to the point like we've talked about before I, wanted sasquatch. Works on a whole lot of levels, but again as I pointed out on this podcast before I've realized, and I've been dragged kicking and screaming into this realization that not everything is for me, and that's okay now. I don't want to I gotTa WanNa shoot an Arrow and then paint a circle around it after it lands I. Don't WanNa. Be That Guy Oh. Yeah I, liked it all along cracking his great. Oh a homerun tape measure, but at that reveal. I didn't hate it. Like I love the colors I love you collars look great. The colors are great. The logo looks great. I can get used to crack in and the one. You're think is a good one. It is different. It is distinct and the one expectation that I think we all have a bow. Seattle at this point is that everything they do is going to be new is going to be progressive is gonNA surprise a lot of people whether it is the name which is very nontraditional, whether it's the first you know green arena climate pledge arena. Everything they do is going to be different. We expect that they're hiring policies progressive the way that they are going to do business as progressive I. Just hope that it doesn't stop now I. Don't think that it does but what does do Elliot selfishly since I have conceded sasquatch. Bang the drum for different colored ice for Seattle Oh my God. I knew you're GONNA. All all our producer I wrote down actually I got to tell you I wrote down. When does jeff come up with the different colored? Ice Oh my God yeah. I'm telling. Pretty, it'd be this early. It will put it this way Jeff. If one team's going to do it, it's going to be this one well. They WANNA. They're promoting. They have the green arena, so do green ice here you go. Here's your chance. I'd love to see if the NHL allows this you know. It reminds me a lot of the raptors. When the raptors came in new, there were a lot of people didn't like raptors and I remember. John Bits of doing an interview on the Fan with Bob McCowan and John. biddle said Bob. What do you think of the name and he goes Bob? Said I hate it and John biddle said good. That means that you're not in our target audience so I! Don't care what you think about it. And the other thing, too, is you talk about the team? Look at their twitter feed now that we have a name or strategizing all the ways to draft your favorite player. Yeah, like there are people in the league. Telling me I'm sick of these guys already sold. The rivalries are building. Yes, rivalries are building so the other two Jeff I I'd heard was. I heard the amount of meetings over the small details were unreal. The color of the is how many is you know I didn't realize I saw the video. When you look at the logo, the S has tentacle through it. like that black line is the tentacle of the cracking, and there was one person who told me that They weren't so sure about this until they saw that video and I have to say identify with that. When I saw the video and saw that that's what that black line was supposed to be. I thought that was really cool. What are the things about the whole reveal by? Seattle is the security around at the secrecy around. It the lack of leaks. I thought for sure that by the morning of the announcement it would be out there and confirmed by somebody I'll tell you the one thing that I learned from one of maybe if not my favorite movie of all time jaws. Is this Don't show the shark. Secret that movie is they don't show the shark until much later on. Don't show the shark and the one thing that Seattle did in this entire process is. They didn't show the shark like sure. There was a temptation there to extend the metaphor. Show the shark, but they didn't do it. Even in that video as everybody is going through this pruder's style frame by frame by frame, trying to look for clues I gotta give it to Seattle Man. They didn't show the shark at all. One of the big conversations I heard after they decided the name was. What's the Mascot GonNa look like. Well and that's when you get the rivalry about DETROIT WITH DETROIT. Yes, it looks too much like a traditional octopus. It won't. There's no way it will. No of course not, and they also said like the Jersey, the crack and has to look. Not like a WIMP, it can't be a wimpy cracking I. Don't know enough about mythological creatures. I'm not sure there can be a wimpy cracking. Does it exist I? Doubt it every movie I've ever mccracken. They're pretty nasty, but they definitely talk about that. We can't have a soft cracking. So the jerseys were revealed the branding is revealed and Tim Leiweke, who's a CEO of the Oak View Group was on hockey central with us. The day of the announcement and he let something slide. Let something slip. That was pretty interesting. We spent more time going back and look at the Metropolitans. In the fact, they won the Stanley cow, so we spend a lot of time looking at that history and tradition. I won't spill all the beans, but I'll tell you. There's a third and Fourth Jersey coming. Eventually wore on her that legacy in that tradition. Hundred Seventeen team. Of course when the won the Stanley Cup I would imagine that if they're winking at history that hard, and I think that they will. That will probably see Abana raising on opening night while you're going to do something special rate. I think they'll do a number of the special things on opening night I would imagine that would be one of them. Yes, and you know a nice touch too here. We are here here. He goes, SEATTLE. Here's here's a million ideas here on this podcast. HAP Holmes was the goaltender for that Seattle team homes played on a number of Stanley Cup, champions real good goaltender born in Aurora in the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame, died relatively young I think it is early fifties in Florida, but he wore a baseball cap. I think it might have been the first goaltender in the NHL to ever wear a baseball cap. It would be nice if they did something with HAP Holmes and abate. I don't know what it is I'm just doing this off the top of my head, but if someone is wearing a hap-. Maybe it's whoever the goaltender is for. The opening ceremony wears a HAP, Holmes baseball hat that would be a nice touch for the. Hockey nerd like me out there. WHO DIDN'T GET SASQUATCH well? One thing I looked up was to Seattle have any retired numbers and they don't. Remember when Ottawa came in had an old retired number. Frank Finnegan, and they honored it. But Seattle, I can't sense that they do. Okay, so now. Seattle's job is to make this team to create this team out of nothing not unlike what Vegas went through most recently. Do. They have a friend in the flat Cap Seattle All I. We talked about this last week. I, think they're a huge winner. In the new CBA their job just became. If easier is the right word, but I they gain some real advantages and. A few teams have said that to me that the mistakes Vegas they were going to avoid them now. Circumstances have dictated that someone's going to have to make them, and it's a huge advantage for them. There's no question from a financial point of view Elliott. We just mentioned the flat cap here second ago. Given the economic realities NHL NHL is going through now, and we'll go through in the next couple of seasons I know. I opened up by saying how important is Seattle team, but I'll ask it again from an economic point of view to this team, not just become where the more important teams in the NHL team thirty two new infusion of money. Well there's no question that that's true and new infusion of enthusiasm to the Batman, and daily made it very clear and their negotiations with the players that ownership cash flow was very important. They got expansion money that players don't share in from Vegas and there were some owners who thought they didn't get enough. In terms of the system stuff, edgy arbitration that they wanted, but one of the things they could be sold on was that they've expansion money coming in, and that's their win, and that's cash, so there's no doubt that Seattle's big for a lot of reasons, and the other thing too is even before this. There were people who were predicting. Predicting that Seattle would be a top ten revenue team in the NHL. They're gonNA need that. They're merchants already hot negative. That's one of the reasons. It didn't get out because it's not ready at right me, you can order stuff, but I learned through this process that one of the ways that logos and names get leaked Jeff is that you have to share them with vendors or you presale them to vendors and things like that. They didn't do it this time. They didn't do it this time day. Kept it all close Alright talk, congratulations, seattle you now have a name in the NHL has team

NHL’s Seattle team unveils ‘Kraken’ name along with logo, jersey design

"We are proud to give you the Seattle cracking. I'm Heidi Devil. And I'm, the vice president of marketing for the Seattle crackin. It's now my honor to take you through the inspiration for this new and exciting brand. Seattle is a city built by the sea. In our PJ's sound is notorious for its deep waters. As a child growing up here. I was always really proud of that. My grandmother from Ballard and my grandfather from Linden would entertain my siblings and cousins and I with tales of sea voyages and beasts in the deep As I got older, I learned that the largest octopus on planet Earth lives right here in our waters. about galloping Gertie and the legend of the King Octopus under Tacoma Narrows Bridge. And I can't help but think that these magnificent and highly intelligent creatures could only be descended from one thing. See the truth is hockey's always been here, sleeping giant ready to be awoken. And this city deserves a hockey club untamed as the sea herself. And when we heard the rallying cry ing of the fans and we heard the undeniable passion they had for this name. We knew it was the one We are the Seattle crackin. Canada Says No To Home Games For Toronto Blue Jays

"There are so many questions right now. What will happen to the Blue Jays? So as you probably know. Canada said no to the Blue Jays, playing in Toronto too much it took the the federal government actually write, write, write too much cross border travel. You know, like, and maybe this is a question for Michael. Does it seem duplicitous that the NHL is in Toronto, but that Blue Jays can't be. I think I get it, though. Maybe I'm missing an obvious point. But in terms of hockey, they're all there and they're not going anywhere. Right, and the Blue Jays would be coming back and forth across the border all the time and so with their opponents So now what? And the Toronto Star had an article about I think at one point they might have said that Buffalo was going to happen. And then it was couched some Dunedin. I know I saw one headline that it was like they're going to Buffalo. But, yeah, they're not at least not officially and all. It seems like everything I've read since then. Oh, Saturday afternoon is that the Bisons facility is just not good enough. For this now. It'll come down to what there are. Other options are And maybe we'll end up having to be good enough. Police saying This was near the Justice Center. Police say that some point of fire was lit in front of the building. Another person tampering with the security camera federal officers coming out of the courthouse, clearing protesters from the Justice Center and putting that fire out. Demonstrators tore down fencing around the courthouse in one demonstrator tampered with his security camera places and they were carrying shields, helmets, gas masks, umbrellas, bats and hockey sticks. "There's lots of digest. I'm gonna start back in circle back a little bit too nikei just because you guys both brought up a point and i just wanna get into it for people that are listening. You talked about the skating. We've seen the development of his skating. It's certainly has gotten a lot better. He looks like a different player out there than when we first on where i i think <hes> what was it for him basically bam behind mike kelly kellyanne yeah you're right and and but he's he's gotten a lot better but there is that next step to take the talked about how difficult is it to take next as a guy with that kind of a body type and ben we look at you because you skate on that level but you're a tall guy who was playing hockey growing up very uncoordinated tall guy. Playing hockey is a bad man. How difficult is that to take that because he's taken such strides and then now. It's like that next step to take. How difficult is that going to be. You know i think it's going to be tricky for any guide to improve that kind of stuff. Once you get to a certain level now i can tell you just from talking to people around the world. He certainly motivated. He's a guy that's going to work hard at escaping and he's going to work hard to improve <hes> and it's it's not just that i mean you can obviously make up for some lack of skating with just anticipation timing play recognition stuff like that that of course is stuff that all takes time to develop and take experience to develop and so that's kind of the biggest question for him community this camp just is he ready at twenty years old if he's not that's totally fine sometimes sometimes defenseman just take a little longer 'cause you're. It's more of a reactionary position whereas a forward. You're making things happen so we'll see. I'm very intrigued to see him at this camp. He's one of the players. I'm most looking forward to seeing along with of course a guy like cody glass who was dave said kind of time for him to try to make his mark. Try to make a push for the n._h._l. Team now. The nights are entering camp pretty set at center at least on their top three lines and i'm personally not that big of a fan of making him a fourth line center just to get him into the n._h._l. I would rather have him play top power-play top penalty kill top line center for the wolves if that were to happen but we'll see. It'll be interesting to see what happens the issue in. I think you agree with the dave. I wanna get your thoughts on the two but isn't the issue with that that at some point they're tough six is kind of set <hes>. They've got a lot of guys that are just locked locked in so at some point. He's going to have to come up and play somewhere i don't. I don't know that he's just gonna plug in into one of those spots anytime soon with the guys that they've got locked into contracts well. I think they've got a almost perfect development pather. Him kinda laid out in terms of this year. We've talked about it before but like in all likelihood paul stasio he's going to miss them. Games this year. That's just kind of track record record and if that happens you probably move cody can up to secondhand center and then you can have cody glass. Call them up and have them be your third light center or maybe flip those two. You know they'll be opportunities as even if glass doesn't make the opening night roster from to make an impact on this team this season and so you can kind of get his feet wet. This year than obviously cody eakins a free agent. You can potentially give him that. Third line center job.

"Opted not to do anything, and he goes between February and may, you know, all of a sudden, at the end of the run, and we are the Stanley Cup champions, that, you know, and that's was Patrick, wow, was or young goalie that kind of came out of nowhere, and let the way for the Canadians in this case, you know, years and years later, it's it's your bidding and who's kind of, you know, come onto the scene in January, then the blues taken off. So the hockey seasons are interesting and the ebbs and flows and how teams can find their way, and particularly now that it's so close there that the Saint Louis blues we've, you know, we've done the math. They've been the best team in hockey since January, the third, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they are one game away from going to the family. So the message is just don't fall too far out of it. I mean if you hang in there, then you have a chance, it's a long as you said a long long season January third. So like seems like your deep into the season because the calendar, you know, had flipped over. So they're still alive. Lot of hockey to be played after that. And the blues took advantage of it, and now are five wins away from winning their first ever Stanley Cup and their weights. Boston similar to all these other teams that had to wait, it probably is good for Boston to get some, some rest here, right? Because they get a lot older players chara looks like it'd be ready for the final, which now officially is gonna start next Monday a week from today. You know, crates he's been around for a while? Marcia has been around for a while. There were there were five players EJ, I think four or five players that were actually on that owned nine team that last played Carolina. So it just shows you there's a lot of length there. I mean there's guys like Carlo and McEvoy they've got younger players, but, you know, they've got a lot of older players that probably are gonna use this week plus off to their advantage. Well. A lot of time. A lot of time they're going to miss. I think eleven days between when they played lots and the Cup final. I think the last sixteen that have had a long lay-off for a longer lay off their opponent have all lost. So you know include the Bruins in two thousand thirteen they had a longer lay in the Blackhawks at your so we'll tell plays out. But I mean if indeed were to get a blues Bruins final, and then the teams are very similar their deep teams with experienced guys at the top of their clubs. And I mean, the biggest difference is that the Bruins haven't experienced goaltender that's been there in two carafe, and the, and the blues have rookie, Jordan Benneton, but, you know, he's played he's been anything like a rookie. And you know, a funny side note to that is if these teams play Jordan Bennington played some games for the providence. Bruins last year as part of being loaned out. I mean, that's how far off the depth chart. Right. Was with the blues. So I mean there is some familiarity with Jordan Bennington with some of those younger players probably in Boston. And, and some of that, Oregon. Station that stretches back, you know, in the providence..

"And I think that the right thing by apologizing or or explaining himself the next day. But it wasn't a good look sometimes, you know, I don't think it was necessarily intentional. But I think that, you know, listen, you're on national television. You gotta know better than that. I mean, this this is the woman that is played a lot of hockey her life. She's not obviously, she's not a man playing in the National Hockey League. But she's played a lot of hockey. And she just went through a terrific experience gold medal winner. I think on the on the back end, it was, you know, in the world, we live in everybody goes crazy, right because Twitter goes wild. And you know, peer doesn't have the biggest fan club. "Broadcasts when those teams are home. You can still hear them on Sirius XM. So it's not completely away from the car radio or your chance to be able to hear it. And it's not just streaming. But it's the way of the world now hockey's first because obvious. Of the four major sports their fourth as far as you know, the level of interest in the United States is concerned. But what you're seeing with all sports with the exception of baseball because baseball supplies you with a hundred sixty two games. So from a programming standpoint, it's very lucrative the contracts for the teams and the radio stations and baseball is also perfect radio, football, hockey basketball or kind of convenience situations where most people watch the games. They're not perfect on radio. It just a, hey, I gotta go. I gotta be stuck in my car. I don't wanna miss the game. I'm gonna listen to it. But it's not something that necessarily as a destination for fans when your football basketball or hockey fan. It's better on television. You can watch it on television. So it's kind of just a convenient to have it on radio. So the ratings are never really that great for really all of them on when I did the jets the post the pre and post game shows a lot of times outright of the games because people because it's once a week and watch it on television. But it's a way of the world. Now, the a lot of these teams now keep it in how. House meaning that the teams owned the broadcast rights, you know, a lot a lot of times. It was they'd sell. It out radio stations would pay for the rights. They'd be the rights holders. They pay a fee to the teams to the games. But as I mentioned now that it's not as financially lucrative. What's been happening? Is that they've been keeping it in house? So they the teams are paying the radio stations to air the games or some sort of a barter system. But to make a long story short is is that what radio stations are believing. And these teams is that I have I have the rights, and I can do whatever I want with those rights, and which streaming does in an app does is give you more flexibility. If I have a like if I have the Los Angeles Kings, for instance, on the New Jersey Devils who were exclusively streaming if I signed a contract with radio station, they might be able to give me a thirty minute game. And a lot of times it might be only fifteen minutes ten minutes. Rush off the air when the game is over not a lot of ad revenue opportunity. A lot of times the games get bumped because. That radio station like on a ninety eight seventy SPN. We've got the jets we've got the Knicks. So sometimes the Rangers get bumped when the Nixon and the Rangers are playing and so the radio station has to pay a fee to find another station put that on it just becomes a lot of a loss leader of money for these radio stations and for these teams. So what the teams are saying, hey, I can do a two hour pregame. If I want to because it streaming. I don't have to worry about competition on have to worry about something else. Being on my stream. I can do more in depth interviews. I can do more in-depth intermission reports. I can sell it make money myself. I can have extended post game shows I can have shows on off days surrounding around it. So right now, we're in transition were most people are just used to turning on the radio. But once streaming happens in the car, and people get more and more used to the fact that they're getting their audio off their computer or their phone. This is going to be a world win for these teams because they're going to be able to do so much more than they can do on radio. So the traditional way we used to listen to sports is now changing. The kings and the devils. They're moving forward with it. It's been awkward right now. Because not everybody's made the transition..

"I think falls on the feet of those guys in when bet was able to come in. He came in with an MBA attitude to expand it, so I'm not spitting on the man's grave. I'm just saying that when we analyze his tenure I do not look at that is a great time in the history of the National Hockey League. Well, I mean, I think there was probably ups and downs in as part of his tenure as there would be with anyone I think that it was a different era for sure in sports. And in the world and television, and the way we view things, and I don't know if the NHL was really ready for too much expansion during that window from the late seventies to the early nineties. I would say you could criticize the league and the way they did things for the you know, the way they ran the the television of package, and I think that they were on it might have been on ESPN, and they went to sports channel America. I think was somewhere in that window, and then they came back ESPN. So I mean, those are things that you know, you would look at it. I think you're right. When you say, I mean, the owners are the ones that really at the end of the day, we're on the show. I mean, and the it's always it's always a different, you know, different Aaron different way just think he was president not the Commissioner rights. So that sells you something right there. He's been in insurance for many many years, but it will to kinda crew power over that time. And so it's just I think it's a different world. And you know, I think John Ziegler was the man at that time, and he was kind of a guardian for the owners, but I don't think he has nearly the the power that the Commissioner holds today in the National Hockey League. So I think that there's room for criticism to your point. And I think there's probably some things that he was able to help hold together at a time. When again things were different business was different the world is different. Now. You know, it's the thing about, you know, I I can remember that whole thing with the devils to when they were into in whole they have with Jim Schoenfeld. And and he was off in Europe. That was not a good look for the National Hockey League for sure, but there was other things that John Ziegler was a was a positive force in for hockey. And you know, when Gary Bettman came in it really just did did take off. And I think Gary deserves a lot of. Edit. More than people are willing to give them sometimes especially fans. They don't understand that. That's really the business and the way things I'm grown dramatically in the last twenty twenty five years. Now, speaking of that growth, the NHL announces today a partnership with MGM resorts. So you're starting to see these commissioners now embrace gambling the NFL not so much, but but the rest of the sports realizing that this is an avenue it's legalized now in Canada in New Jersey, different parts of the country. I mean, I think it's time to recognize this. I get that there are pitfalls. I never asked you how you felt about it. But I think this is a brave new world. And I think it's important for these sports to embrace it. Yeah. Hey, listen, stay out. Right. So it's I think you have two choices you can stick your head in the sand or you can try to get a piece of the action so to speak, and I think it's probably wise through the ladder. This is another potential, you know, big revenue stream for hockey. And you know, let's face it. The NFL one of the things that has made the NFL so popular over the years of a number of things. That kind kinda fall in their favor is the fact that people like the battle took ballgames and if now with legalize yeah, blowing if people are betting on hockey games. And that means they're going to have more interest in watching hockey games that could that could nothing but good well the National Hockey League. So, you know, this is the world we live in two thousand eighteen it is legal to do it in New Jersey..

"Does defense exist anymore or has the NHL become just like pick up hockey? GM is the best podcast out there game Escot like, well, thank you. Well, we talked about it before. I think the offense is way ahead of the defense early in the season. You've seen a lot of lack of chemistry because of all the changes. I watched San Jose live for the first time and you know Carlson's good, but he's just kind of feeling his way their brand new in San Jose teams that have been the most consistent Nashville doesn't make a lot of changes, and they've been very good to start the season Colorado, not a lot of changes. Look good to beginning of the season, but you know, some teams have been able to make it work right, seven different players in Carolina, and they're off to a a three on one St.. Art, nine different players in buffalo, and they've been off to a very average start. I just think chemistry. You're gonna see a lot of breakdowns and a lot of odd man rushes when the chemistry is not there. I do think it will get better as the season goes on choices. Any thoughts on the devils shutout victory over Washington? Think it was a fluke or can we expect to see this happening more with the devils while Kincaid is starting to show you that maybe he's the number one goaltender the way played last year and certainly playing tremendous hockey. Now, with a couple of wins. We talked about it before they got into the playoffs last year basically on the back of hall, and we felt that their best chance to be better since they didn't make any changes during the offseason was to have. He sheer become better while Paul Mary has been better. Okay. Johannesen healthy is certainly going to help Travis day Jack look, great in Sweden. So if these guys are gonna play to that level. Yeah, this is going to be a playoff team. I'm not going to base a synopsis on an entire season based off a two games, but we are talking. About a team that has outscored their opponent and their two wins eleven to two. That's pretty impressive. In considering one of those victories six, nothing shutout against the defending Stanley Cup champions. Alaska hockey nut says, Don, I know you pick the bolts to win the Stanley Cup game yesterday against Vancouver decent amount of shots, but Nielsen making them look all too routine. Tampa's top names pretty much invisible, poor defense decision with the puck very early in season. Your thoughts? Yeah. Again, we're talking about two games here. All right. They played the one game against the rival in Florida. I was surprised they lost Vancouver. I still think this team is as Deepa team. There is in the National Hockey League on the blue line, they've got weapons. Authencity kucherov could very easily been the MVP. You know how good stamkos is. Hedman is a guy that go in the Norstrom fee basically every year it's gonna take a little time. I'm surprised by it, but I'm not going to base it off of two games. I still think the cream will rise to the top and we're gonna see the lightning, get it, done it. Listen, I loved Florida, and they're off to a little bit of a slow. Start to Toronto, doesn't play any defense. Boston still very good so that defy that division is going to be a little. More wide, open navy with Tampa off to a slow start. But I think they'll be okay. Dot. Calvin says, game is conduct. Do you think the sharks need to trade a demand for another forward? If so, who would fit nicely at center or on the wing and San Jose. Nice win for the Rangers, but must put a smile on your son's face while, unfortunately, ten months, he's not really committed to a team yet, but I think he's likes his dad coming home from work, knowing that you know that his dad was at a place where the team won the game, but you know, Marco and Jalen Jalen seems to be a little bit more committed to the devils. My daughter seems to really like Brian Boyle, for whatever reason by son has not made a commitment to a hockey team yet, but we'll see how it all works out. But back to the sharks Thornton's gonna come back sooner than later, so I wouldn't get too crazy. I, I still think that's a very good team than in Carson. Carson. Carl, excuse me. Carlson gets his legs..

"Eighteen twenty nine thousand nine hundred shell season. We'll right back at you. Thank you so much. And why are fan nine says great. Have game is conduct backed on. Do you think the Pinera n- Ambrose ski get traded at deadline, and if you're the GM, would you be willing to give Panin nine. Nine, ten million dollars seven years if he hits free agency. Great question. I think Banaras a special player and special players get paid. So I think I would give that to them. And as far as trading, if you don't think you're going to be able to keep those guys and again, you've got salary cap, ramifications, obviously. So this is not baseball. We just throw any amount of money you wanted somebody. You've got the cap that think about. But all I would say. So the powers that be in Columbus. There's some really good people there is that when you let go, remember you traded Saad to get an. And you live abroad ski go, you're going to be looking for the next Pinera Nebraska. You're so this is the team that's in a wide open division. I think a healthy blue jackets team can compete for a cop. I really do. They just haven't been able to stay healthy so we something with them, it's health. There's some kind of contract thing. I think John Tortorella ak- coach, he's proven to you that this guy can win. The Brodsky has not been a money goaltender in a postseason, but you know, you bring in Seth Jones. He's not gonna be ready for the start of the season, but nobody surprised if you wanna Norris trophy. They've got a lot of muck and grinders that you really need making a playoff run. And now instead of them turning the next corner, there's the possibility you're going to have to trade these guys away for what you're not gonna get market value for them because they're free agents at the end of the year. So we can get a pick and just try to start all over. Columbus is really building a tremendous fan base. They're getting out of that hole expansion franchise thing and building themselves a history boy, that would be a huge step back to lose those guys in lose them for nothing. So I hope they're able to get something done, but. I just have this feeling that those guys are gonna walk in. That's gonna really stink Christmas. Hi, Don as a follow up to yesterday's talk on flyers mascot gritty originally thought this would be a bigger disaster than iceman was to the Mighty Ducks. Then I saw how positive my son ages, sons, ages, four and two responded. The flyers are targeting kids and it's success. I just looked at it and said, that's gonna scare kids because all I kept thinking about whenever I took my niece to a devil game and I and I was able to ask the devils to bring the mascot over, you know, he's got the big doughy is I mean he's a devil, but they were still scared of him because it's a big monster. You go to do. You can go to DisneyWorld and see Mickey Mouse, who's an icon and kids get scared that's gonna scare kids. But you don't want what between the video games and the and the cartoons that I'm getting to see the kids watch now that I've got to ten month olds, and they're starting to watch television and bubble guppies and all that they're kind of used to scary things, I guess. And. I'm I'm telling you even that said it's been an overwhelming success. It has gotten so much pob. He's been on. Every primetime show is getting mentioned everywhere. All over social media. It's one of the great PR decisions. I'm saying that history is sports honestly for a sport that needs all the public and get granted. It's gritty in it's a mascot. They should be talking about the flyers, and now the team could actually take a step forward this year we re acquiring than reams die can and really molding into a player, the players that they have now, but, hey, listen, somebody's talking hockey's..

"Why do we love Tampa their deep on defense? Why do we love San Jose? They they, they acquire Karlsson with burns with vassal with the Vlasic. They've got a good blue line. Why do we love Nashville great blue line rights? So you look at the teams that can win boy when you've got that great blue line that can score, but also defend and take a little pressure off your goal, tender. You know what. You're going to compete for a Stanley Cup, and I think that might be the missing piece for Toronto ultimately to get at least this year to the promise land. Kyle complements the show yesterday said, good show yesterday predictions in hockey or scary, laugh out loud. I hope the sharks can produce what is expected of them this year, but it's a long season. Who would you like to see win the Cup this year? Jumbo finally, getting a Cup would be amazing. Listen, the rooting interest obviously goes out the window when you're trying to be professional. But I love to see guys who've never one win, right to see Joe Thornton who's gonna waltz into the hall of fame finally get that allusive ring would be terrific. It was great to see. Ovechkin finally win that rang. I think that would be something to see stamkos who's been knocking at the doors entire career. Finally win that ring would be great Toronto to win a Stanley Cup of the first time since nineteen sixty seven. That certainly would be great. So is somebody that covers the sport and loves the sport firsts? Are. A really interesting to me. So if I can get a team in there for the first time I get a player winning the Cup for the first time. I think that's going to be a pretty cool am says I've only ever been to the garden, what's the most beautiful stadium in your opinion. Great, great question. The bell center's always been my favorite for atmosphere and also to call the game because you're right on top of the ice on anxious. I've I've been to Joe Louis arena several times on calling arranger wings game a little bit later on in the member. So I'm gonna get a chance to see the new place which is supposed to be modeled after the bell centre. I love the atmosphere in San Jose. I think that is terrific. Although the broadcast booth is a little far off the ice in a little high up, still the atmosphere. There is great. I love the saddledome in Calgary, big fan of that. I, I like the new arena in Edmonton. It's gorgeous. Beautiful. Reminds me a lot of Pittsburgh, but again, the broadcast area. Areas a pretty distant from the ice, but from a fan standpoint, that buildings, great. I love the atmosphere and Columbus, not just in the arena, the experiences, tremendous, but outside of the arena, they built it up very nicely as well. So those of some of the ones that pop into my head excited for five and a major because five minute major not only is back, but he's got an updated picture of me and him. We'd take selfish every year and I was over at ram, oppose ten to two victory over Hofstra the ice fault and Wayne New Jersey a couple of weeks ago and got to see five minute major, and Travis was nice enough to take a picture with me. So every time he tweets me, he's got that picture underneath it. So here's what he has to say today. Great. Seeing you and your family at the ice walled. Thanks for all that. You do to keep the sport of hockey front and center. Here's to a great twenty.

"I mean, they took him to six games and a couple of bounces here there on the sharks could've made a pass, the Vegas Golden Knights. So very interesting, four games to get things started tonight. I'm really, really looking forward to it. Obviously, we got the baseball going on and football, but if you're a hockey fan and if you're listening to this podcast, I'm sure that you are and it's probably your favorite sport as a great way to get things going to start the season, and then you'll be full bore tomorrow when you'll have the Bruins back in action against the sabers capitals and penguins, you've got the Rangers and predators. Yes, some really good game there. Jets and blues. I think the the blues are going to be better. I think the coyotes are going to be better than Dow take on the stars. Can the avalanche. Match what they did last year fliers. I guess. I guess I don't know whether it's paid back for gritty, but somebody in the NHL office is not a fan of the Philadelphia Flyers. How many times have they started the season on the west coast? Now that could turn out to be a good thing for you. You get a winning record. You get it out of the way the boy team that's looked upon to take the next step and, oh, by the way you go start on the west coast. Go start against the Vegas, Golden Knights in that atmosphere to get your season going. So kind of crazy, our, let's make it about you the rest of the way you can get in touch with me every day at dawn, lick record hashtag game is conduct, and let's get into some of your tweets and maybe some of them that we didn't get to yesterday with EJ. Ted Scott, his predictions for the twenty eighteen nineteen season. He's got Tampa coming out of the east. So do I. He's got San Jose coming out of the west, so it why he's got San Jose winning at all. I've got Tampa winning at all, but I wouldn't be surprised if the sharks do so good picks out of Ted, Tom says, hi Don. What is your favorite goal song? My faves the Blackhawks. And he loves the the Howland for you by the coyotes. I, I'm an old school brass bonanza guy with the Hartford Whalers, but they don't exist anymore. Obviously, listen, Dan at Dan and out with the sand with the Chicago Blackhawks is always been my favorite. So I agree with you there. I'd have to think about some of the other goal songs. Never been a big fan of the Rangers goal song. So I, I would. I would agree with you. The Blackhawks should be great Matt says, hey, down the Greco, what could be a potential big move for the devils to make this season that gives hall the confidence to stay? Well, I think they're committed the hall and I think halls committed to the devils. He won the MVP last year when the Hart trophy. I devil ever to do that Stevens ever did it need to Meyer? Never did it. Brodeur never did it. So I think he's committed here, but yeah, I think he wants to win, but certainly he probably feels like he's got a better chance to win now in New Jersey. Then he did when he was with Edmonton, how he'd feel if he was on Benton right now, I don't know. But. Listen, the devils have a lot of good young players. So when you talk about an acquisition, I look at this devils team and I say, will they're young players get better?.

"They're going to happen. The hope that he sheer takes the next step can Snyder retake in the competence of being the number one goaltender Carolina's in rebuild, for sure. In that division Columbus is I think a contender if they can stay healthy, but they got the Pinera n- and the Brodsky situation brewing their islanders Rangers obviously in rebuild. So I think the capitals are definitely going to make the playoffs on just not sure that you're gonna see a force in the regular season, and maybe that's a good thing. Let them catch their groove in March, get into the playoffs hot. They'll be a competitor for the Stanley Cup. I'm just not sure they're gonna. Have a regular season that's going to be for the ages, flames and Canucks patron is the good young addition that they picked fifth overall, I predicted him to win the rookie of the year, the Calder trophy. You've got best. They're coming back and healthy, but Vancouver is still a few years away, I think for being a contender and I think they may be better than they were last year, but they are not going to be a playoff contender. The flames, boy, some people that you talk to. I saw the hockey news had him, you know, winning the Pacific Division that clearly was before Carlson became a member of the San Jose Sharks. But you know, the flames re jigger that blue line which was something he desperately needed to do when you look at that blue line over the last few years, I think they should have been better than the than they than they played. And I think if they can get production out of their blue line and now they've got Hannifin, which I think was great off-season pickup, but you need more from Brody. You need more from Jere Donohoe hamernicks. Good player. I like stone. I think that's a great addition. I think they're blue line is better, and I think they've got a very dynamic offense could Dros. One of the better players in the league Monaghan needs a wake up just a little bit same of Bennett. Sometimes watching them and calling some of their games of the last couple of years. Those guys need to be better to just way too many times I'm calling arranger flame game, and I did both of the games last year in which I'm just not saying Bennett Monaghan nearly enough Lynn homes going to be an ice edition there as well. And I love the addition of James Neal. So I think the flames are definitely going to be better. I think they're definitely a playoff team, and this is one of those nights where you go to Vancouver and you get two points because it's going to be very difficult to win that Pacific Division with the San Jose Sharks, I just think are primed. And that's the last game tonight at ten thirty sharks in San Jose against the ducks. No, Corey Perry for the ducks. They're getting older now. So I'm not sure the ducks are a playoff team and the sharks, I think of the best team in the Western Conference is between. In them in the Winnipeg Jets. I've got the sharks coming out of the west, but I've got both the sharks and the jets winning their respective divisions, Erik Carlson, I got him winning the north trophy. I think he's that kind of edition. You had him with last week yet him with burns. You now have like a Nashville type blue line that can be exceptionally productive and to have those kind of points centers on your blue line takes a lot of pressure off which should be very stout. Offense of team Thornton. Coming back from injury, pa- Veliky tour. We'll see if you get more out of them than you did last year. I think you will of Andor Cain full season with the sharks. I think he was a tremendous audition edition from last year Donskoy I think is ready to take the next step. Not great. I don't think they have great bottom half of the the they're nine is solid. I'm not sure about ten, eleven and twelve their fourth line. But I just think that you got. To be really excited about the sharks, and I think you gotta money goaltender in Martin Jones. Let's not forget. It was only a couple of years ago. This team went to the Stanley Cup. Final played game six against the Pittsburgh Penguins and heard EJ you already. Jay mentioned yesterday. It's easy to forget. They had Vegas on the ropes a bit..

"He's that game misconduct podcast with Don la- Greco and welcome to the Wednesday edition of game misconduct IM down the Greco. And I'm very happy to say that the twenty eighteen twenty nine thousand nine season is underway tonight. I don't know what it was about the preseason. Usually it goes probably pretty quick, but maybe it was just the anticipation of the season, but just seem like it was a very long training camp. Maybe the early start with flames in Boston, going out to China and the devils and the Oilers playing games in Switzerland and Sweden. It just seemed like there's a lot of international hockey that I just wanted to get on with the regular season and the NHL great job, especially with the partnership NBC sports. Now we talk about this all the time. Boy, they should be back on ESPN boy that we miss him out guest PIN listen, I work at ESPN. This podcast emanates from SPN at I would love ESPN and get back into the hockey world, but NBC sports net does a great job of giving you a double header right out of the box. Stanley Cup champions raising their. Banner against the Boston Bruins. I don't think anybody would be surprised if the capitals and Bruins both Representative Eastern Conference and the Stanley Cup final, and you've got the ducks and the sharks Erik Carlson makes his debut in San Jose on national television at ten thirty. So they certainly do it right? It should be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it. Wheelers played a little bit earlier today, finishing up their exhibition season with a four, three victory. They'll take on the devil's coming up later to start their season out in Sweden, but we do have four regular season games that got underway tonight. Let's start at seven o'clock with the Canadians and the Maple Leafs. And I'm sorry, Montreal fans in which my wife is one. This is going to be a very, very long season. Shea Weber the new captain of the Montreal, Canadians, not ready for the start of the season outside of Carey price. There's just not a lot to get excited about they're in a rebuild mode right now. There were bad last year. I think they're going to be bad again, this year, max patch, ready, shipped off to Vegas on. There's obviously some things to look at in the Canadians are always a kind of. Interesting team as far as the growth. But I think this is a very important year on a lot of different fronts for Montreal. I could see them really blowing this whole thing up if they don't start moving in the right direction and Carey price in Henrik Lundqvist account in the same boat, right? Where both are elite goaltenders playing on teams that are in a rebuild. I think there's a little bit more focused in New York than there is a Montreal right now, Montreal kind of got pushed into it by just some bad hockey over the last couple of years and some bad deals. And you know the inability to to hold onto some of their players where the Rangers I think went for it got closed, realized that they weren't going to get any closer and chose to take the step back, Montreal kind of forced into this rebuild. And of course it's the tradition there in Toronto taking on a leaf team. Everything is different with the Leafs now. All right. They went out and got themselves a star player and John Taveras, whether you think he's a top five player, whether you think he's a top ten player regardless you rarely, or able to acquire that type of a player. Now, Neil. Are still holding out, so they're not full bore here, but this is a Toronto team that I'm only hesitant to say can make a run is because they're just in a division. Yeah, they got the rebuilds in in Ottawa and Detroit and Montreal in buffalo, but you've got Tampa to deal with in that division. You've got Boston to deal with the net division. I think the Florida Panthers are gonna be resurgent. You heard EJ Radic talk about the last couple of podcast. He believes this panther team who barely missed the playoffs. Last year is going to be a force this year. I got Babu governor as the guy that I think is gonna win the Jack Adams trophy for coach of the year that's much believe Florida's going to improved..

"Because i we finally have a new entry in the top five in occasion new to the podcast i it's very fluid i try to complement teams that are playing very well but i also want to be able to honour what that team has been able to accomplish all year long so you know just for an example uh calgary is seven two in one in their last ten they've been a hot team but i'm not prepared to put them in the top five when they're in a hovering around the 13th best team in the national hockey league but i do want to be able to honor some of the teams that are hot and are starting to climb the standings a little bit so we begin the top five right at the bottom with number five number five welcome for the first time i'm not sure not just this year but in the history of game misconduct i'm not sure this team has ever been in the top five and that's the boston bruins they deserve to be there aid owing two in their last ten last blemish was that overtime loss to pittsburgh before boston went on thereby they are just an amazing hockey team that they are now healthy lashed and we talked about this before you know you're plan without craig she you're playing without spooner there's so many there's so many other injuries that they've had but now you're marchand you've got berge iran you've got pasternak plane tremendous hockey you've got the young guns on the blue line mcevoy a friend of the show here playing well so other getting the goal tending we'll see how long it can last but one it is a wide open atlantic division i you got tampa sitting there up top and they're probably gonna run away with a vision but ottawa falling apart montreal not much traction detroit better than we thought but i don't think there are playoff team buffalo the worst team in the national hockey league florida okay but certainly not a playoff team so boston toronto and they they got a chance said they continue to play well where they're going to make it a foregone conclusion that that's going to be your top three uh in the atlantic division so boston missed the playoffs last year uh a team not that they made the playoffs last year they end up losing ottawa's the year before.
