"So as we were putting together this aggressively positive end of year safer work. We figured one way to bid good riddance to twenty one thousand nine hundred. We'll be to remind ourselves of a few work centric news items from the past year that had weren't lane yes and we're going to scatter a few these throughout this episode like Rainbow Sprinkles atop a good vibe Sunday starting with a story that starts off Sabah but stick with us now so last summer. A lot of news outlets started writing about an Arizona and named Patrick Hoaglund he had been laid off from his job as a forklift operator and apparently he'd applied for dozens of jobs online and he didn't get a bite so instead he stood out side by side of the road with a stack of resumes. This is Phoenix Arizona Zona in July my holding up a sign that read please take a resume laid off looking for a job so this one woman in marketing and PR spots awesome as she does what a PR person might do. She posts his resume online for her network. And Dude got hundreds of job offers. Okay I love so many things about this story first of all his just totally analog approach to getting a job but you see you know me. I'm analog we've got pieces of paper you're standing on the road you're handing them to humans. You're not getting stabbed some kind of machinery. I like that part of Ah yes once again. Proves what you've always said which is like stop emailing and start talking a human conversation. Though you know it's too bad has to happen by the side added around. Yes that would be. The downside of this is that one has to go to these lengths morgue lift operator but the upside is. There's some ingenuity out there in Arizona. So good good i Mr Hoaglund happy holidays..

"Left. This just not right. You all right. Chad Benson show, duly elected governors and state lawmakers who campaigned on pro legalisation promises are expected to make good on those pledges in the coming months, but traffic safety experts hope the legislatures slowed down a bit as states moved to consider the legalization of marijuana. We really urge them to think about the implications that can play out in real time on our roadways, Kathy. Chase heads the group advocates for highway and auto safety and says the first states to legalize recreational marijuana all saw their crash rates rise. Look, you gotta figure it out. And. It is. This is one of those things where when I talk about marijuana weed, the wacky Tabacchi understand if you're new to the show, but maybe listen for why for I've never I've never had a taste of alcohol. My life. I have never done a drug. I've never smoked a cigarette. But I don't care that you do I know as long as you do it safely, and you're responsible. I think a lot of people went out and in some of these places they went they went a little wacky. And that's not a good situation. It's not it isn't. But it's coming the legalization of it is coming sooner rather than later. And we'll see I mean, the like everything they said, well, you know, when it comes to cars, and that, you know, people want everybody to slow down. I hear the same thing when it comes to self driving cars from from law enforcement people I work with and governed people saying the problem is technology is growing so fast. And it's jumping out there. You know, we don't even have laws in place. For the event of. Well, what if what if what if the car gets pulled over who, you know? "Now, this was an odd question as far as Capra and Marshall in the US government were concerned. Of course, it works. Just look at it just watch it. Didn't you hear the president? Didn't you see his face? Didn't you watch this amazing movie? But the sociologists psychologists that they had hired to measure morale. They just were not convinced though, both of the sciences were young something that kept coming up in research was that once you quantify people's reactions the truth behind common sense often runs counter to people's intuitions. And there was this other thing that both fields had only just started to explore attitudes. No one yet really knew how attitudes works or what affected them one way or the other the attitude and automatic unbidden and mostly unconscious positive or negative emotional response to well just about anything from chicken pot pie nuclear. Explosions even other attitudes about those things was such a new idea around this time that entire books by scientists about beliefs opinions and public discourse completely omitted the term, and that's a very important point. So keep that in mind for the army to get their answers. They need to hire a psychologist who studied persuasion, but in nineteen forty two. There was no such person persuasion had yet to come under any scientists microscope. As far as science was concerned. We didn't know anything about changing mine's not on purpose. And that meant the army would need to hire someone who could launch the first research of its kind just for them, and they settled on Karl Hoaglund a brilliant young psychologist at Yale. He was making a name for himself as the world's foremost. Experimental psychologists has output was enormous. He was producing a book a year during peak and Hoaglund gladly accepted their offer. But when he and his team of grad students relocate. Waited facilities prepared by the military. They were immediately faced with answering that strange question who's ambiguity. We so often don't notice when we say someone has changed their mind. What exactly is changing what seems like commonsense here upon closer inspection turns out to be in their time. And as yet unexplored territory and even today, if you ask a dozen different psychologists, and I have you'll get a dozen different answers. And if you ask fifteen-euro scientists you get fifteen more in the nineteen forties. The assumption was that people expressed and were motivated by opinions. But that just shifted the problem of definition because what's an opinion, scientifically speaking. Well, some said opinions or in some way an aspect of believes. Okay. So what's the belief, scientifically speaking? Well, some said beliefs reform of self talk or maybe a kind of. Earning by memorization or habits formed through experience. The whole thing was a big mess and most of the early social scientists used all these terms interchangeably much like we do today, which just adds to the confusion and their time. It added to the confusion of what exactly it was. They were studying, and what it was the army was trying to manipulate and what it was that America was trying to resist from Nazi propaganda. But thanks to the of Hoaglund this confusion would not last much longer. Remember what I said about attitudes? How they were still on the fringe of science at this time. Well, I have to admit that on this show. We've done more than one hundred episodes about the psychology of reasoning and decision making about bias in heuristic fallacies and all the rest, but we've never really discussed at it. Toots not scientifically, which is strange because attitudes are sort of the hydrogen atoms of social psychology is the foundation that pretty much everything within that academic silo. But that was not the case yet..
