"Of them and I'm always looking for great organizations doing that kind of work to highlight so you can also shoot me an email and and let me know that where her me up on social media and fill me and in case I missed an organization but of the ones that we've recently highlighted here on newsradio WFLA I've got all of those interviews for you and links to their websites and everything for you on our website also on the website a great moment here in Tampa Bay in advance of veterans day I love these stories everybody loves the stories in these videos when they go viral I Hillsborough elementary school student got a huge surprise this past Friday her dad showed up at our school to see her in person for the first time in almost a year parents organize a surprise a clay well elementary school students at the school headed into the play court for a veterans day assembly including second grader coral Pena right before the pledge of allegiance corals dad US army private Rafael Sanchez walked out on stage it was the first time he'd seen coral or her little sister since he left home for training and it's again it's one of those videos where just off god it's so sweet you can just see how excited yeah is to see your dad and not a year without seeing your nine when you're that young is so hard to have that surprised a place at a veterans day assembly it's it's a great moment so again we've got that free on the website to WFLA news dot com just go to the PM Tampa Bay page on this veterans day I wanted step through this pew research study key findings about America's military veterans comprehensive study peel does really good work when it comes to these kinds of things and their war you see seven different findings from this study that I thought really stood out and that I wanted to highlight here the first one the experiences of post nine eleven veterans differ from those who served in previous eras one in five veterans today served on active duty after the terrorist attacks of September eleventh two thousand one these post nine eleven veterans are more likely to have been deployed and have served in combat compared to pre nine eleven veterans post nine eleven veterans are also more likely than their predecessors to bear some of the physical and psychological scars of combat and that's one of the things that this country has struggled to deal with following the the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars the surge of those who served over there the surge of people coming back and needing various kinds of help the second point here in this P. research study more veterans say the military did a good job preparing them for life in the service then it did and readying them for the transition to civilian life roughly nine in ten veterans ninety one percent say the training they received when they first entered the military prepare them very or somewhat well for military life by contrast about half fifty two percent say the military prepare them very or somewhat well for the transition to civilian life and you'll hear if you listen to some of those interviews I've done with veterans organizations on best of the bay that is a topic that comes up a lot that transition back to civilian life and the difficulties that come along with that transition about half of post nine eleven veterans say readjusting to civilian life was difficult forty seven percent say was very or somewhat difficult for them to readjust to civilian life after their military service a large majority of pre nine eleven veterans seventy percent say was easy for them to make the transition I think that depends too I mean there were a lot of Vietnam veterans that it was not such an easy transition they can still doing without for many veterans the imprints of war felt beyond their tour of duty about a third of veterans thirty five percent say they had trouble paying their bills in their first few years after leaving the military and roughly three in ten say they received unemployment compensation one in five say they struggled with alcohol or substance abuse veterans who say they've suffered from PTSD are much more likely to report experiencing these things then those who did not and we're learning the amount of veterans who were dealing with PTSD far greater numbers than we had ever understood before when it comes to employment a majority of veterans say their military service was useful and giving them the skills and training they need to for a civilian job about one in three veterans say was very useful another twenty nine percent say was fairly useful again these are some findings from a recent pew research study about America's military veterans veterans give the VA mixed reviews no surprise here most veteran seventy three percent say they receive benefits from the department of Veterans Affairs when asked to assess the job the VA is doing in meeting the needs of veterans fewer than half forty six percent of all veterans say the VA is doing an excellent or good job in this regard that number is far too low post nine eleven veterans are more likely than those from previous eras to say the government is giving them last help then it should have forty three percent verse twenty seven percent and then finally a majority of Americans and veterans associate discipline and patriotism with veterans majorities among veterans sixty one percent and the general public sixty four percent say most Americans look up to people who have served in the military and I think that is absolutely one hundred percent true I want to open up the phone lines for a couple things if you have any thoughts on on those findings from this P. research study on America's military veterans eight hundred nine six nine ninety three fifty two is a number also if you have any organizations that you've worked with are working with or benefited from that help veterans here in Tampa Bay area would love to hear about that and pass that information along and finally if there's anybody a veteran that you would like to recognize I'll open up the phone lines on that as well you can just share.
