"Absentee ballots go to vacant houses. Okay. Okay. How does that work? So an absentee ballot goes to a vacant house. Is the implication then that the ballot broker knows which vacant property to go to to pick one of them? How does that even work? So if I was coming to you, Carl, and I knew your information you're basically information. I can request the absentee ballot to go to a property. That's empty. And you're thinking that you can go to the polls and vote. I think it was a case in hillsborough county and a school board race. Where the same thing happened where multiple absentee ballots went to a mailbox where the house was empty and that candidate voted for themselves. Oh my God. It was crazy, but it happens. You know, you may go to a house and I'm a grassroots candidate. I've gone to houses where I get the voter roll from the supervisor of elections. Right. And they'll say, oh, grandma or grandfather or auntie or cousin has been dead for 5 years, or for ten years, but there are my voter roll. And I'm there to ask for their support in their vote, but the list that I've received shows that they're alive, but the person at the door said, oh no, they've been dead for ten years. 5 years, or they died a year ago, but the supervisor of elections will keep saying they got stated, equipment, that they're in tune with vital statistics when there's a death that they know about it. Candidates have been their petitions to get on the ballot. I've been rejected for a lot of petitions where they'll say that dead people sign my petition or that I've submitted copies when I know I didn't. These are original documents. Is to make you pay to get on the ballot. Another candidate in this last election, 350 of her petitions were rejected. Because of date format, they have never rejected a ballot for date format. What is date for Matt? They format on a petition. It'll say you're, this is the tenth month, tenth day, 2022. Okay. So that's the format you're supposed to write ten, ten, 22. Okay. Okay, okay. Well, a lot of people, especially older people, they may put October 10th 2022. They may write it fully out. Or they may do the dash, and they may not put the zero. No way. So they'll just be disregarded. They'll just be disregarded. Yeah, so that was the new thing that they did this year to reject ballots, date format, tell your date that dead people sign your petition, you've turned in photocopies. Only to discourage you from getting your petitions to keep you off the ballot to make you pay the fee. Wow. And they have no interest in cleaning up the voter rolls Cynthia because there's a lot of wiggle room. That is correct. Man, this is, this is just, this is just and it seems to me this would be so easy to track. And to investigate and hopefully, I hope people go to jail for this. I'll be honest with you. I can't stand people taking advantage of people in this particular way. A nursing homes you mentioned a lot of times people will show up to vote and it's the elderly. So I'm assuming either nursing homes or maybe just elderly people that are still in their homes or living with family members or what have you. Are often taken advantage of maybe the most would you say within the black community or is that what you see the most stuff? Yes. So typically the nursing homes that are in our community, the black people that are within those nursing homes, I prayed upon to get their absentee ballots and vote. So they could be living in those facilities permanently or they could be in rehab at the time and someone will come and pick those up as well..
Roger Schulman: Lee County Sheriff Doesn't Have Reason to Lie
"Roger, that's peculiar that the league county sheriff would make that statement today and it sounds like governor desantis was a little bit more cautious about the assertion that hundreds of people have been killed. Yeah, it was interesting. He also made that comment to the hillsborough county sheriff in a phone call last night on a satellite phone while he was standing on top of the roof of a bearcat vehicle trying to do some rescuing. It looks pretty bad down there and he has no reason to inflate things. I think we are going to have some pretty gruesome discoveries there. And hopefully he is wrong. But I don't think he is inflating a carbon arsinoe is a pretty level headed guy. That seems like a vision. That seems like, but governor desantis seems to suggest that might have been based on the 9-1-1 calls, but nonetheless. That's hundreds of people. There's a big difference between one to two confirmed fatalities as of this moment and hundreds. Well, we're going to find out soon. They are going in as we speak to check on these people through the water and we'll know more probably in the next few hours.

"The girlfriend that never was. Most sports fans, if you have a certain age, if you remember the sports blogosphere back when it was fun in 2013, anti teo, big story, grandmother and girlfriend die in the same day. Big football star Notre-Dame, deadspin comes out with the story written by Tim and Jack Dickey, who used to work at SI friend of mine. Tim and Jack break the story that the girlfriend never existed, it was all a big hoax. And the Netflix series, which I watched, I said this on Twitter. Part one is a good rehashing of all the events. You get the person who catfished Tao to explain what their process was and how it worked out. Part two I found way more fascinating because that's when you get deadspin breaking the story. And the fallout, which I found it heartbreaking from anti teo. So my first question to you on it, and you cover this in the Doc, but Jack explains he got a tip just an anonymous tip to the random deadspin inbox. And then you guys put the clues together. Just for my listeners. One, how long from the tip to when you posted that story? And when you posted that story, did you think it would be the biggest thing in the history of deadspin in your career? Yeah, well, it's unfortunate that the timeline wasn't necessarily clear in the film because I think it's interesting. I think, you know, the whole story behind it, Jimmy, where, you know, we got a tip on a Friday afternoon. It was January 12th, 2013. My wife and I were actually, I took the day off because it was our one month wedding anniversary. And I was out picking oranges in a grove somewhere out in rural hillsborough county, and I get a text, I guess, from Dickey saying, hey, you need to check the email. And I checked the email and I said, okay, well, I think we should head home now. And so we got home at 5 o'clock or something, and I immediately started working on it. And I think I worked on it from about 5 that afternoon until maybe three in the morning. When, you know, I had sort of, I think, identified who the person in the photos that were purportedly in a kakua was, and that she was in fact alive. And so, you know, I picked it back up the next morning, where Jack was working on digging into who the person behind the character was, and I was working on trying to get in contact with that living person whose photos were being used to represent Matt Dao's dead girlfriend. And we had more or less tied the whole thing together by Sunday morning.
Ron DeSantis Suspends Prosecutor for Refusing to Enforce Florida Law
"Ron DeSantis, who is a potential 2024 presidential nominee on the Republican side of the aisle, all the polls show him within striking distance of Donald Trump at the moment and we still have a couple of years to go before the actual primaries begin. Ron DeSantis in Florida is demonstrating full scale. This particular idea, which is that if there are people who work for your branch and they refuse to actually abide by the laws that you are supposed to enforce, these people should be fired. So controversy has now broken out over the fact that governor desantis has suspended a state prosecutor Thursday for pledges he made to decline prosecuting cases involving violations related to abortion and gender transition treatment. Rhonda Santos said that he had suspended Andrew Warren, a Democrat who served as the top prosecutor for the state's 13th judicial circuit in hillsborough county, which includes Tampa for neglect of duty. The Republican governor then tapped state judge Susan Lopez to serve as state attorney during the suspension, the state has 20 state attorneys. Here's Ron DeSantis announcing his firing of Andrew Warren. The constitution of Florida has vested the veto power in the governor, not an individual state attorneys. And so when you flagrantly violate your oath of office, when you make yourself above the law, you have violated your duty. You have neglected your duty and you are displaying a lack of competence to be able to reform those duties. And so today we are suspending state attorney Andrew Warren effective in media. So state attorney Andrew Warren put out a statement saying it's an illegal overreach that continues a dangerous pattern by Ron DeSantis of using his office to further his own political ambition. It spits in the face of the voters of hillsborough county, but twice elected me to serve them, not Ron DeSantis. The problem with that, of course, is that if you have a state attorney who simply refuses to prosecute crime, he is not doing his job.

Under State Constitution, Gov. DeSantis Can Suspend State Officials
"What does that mean? What it means is under the state constitution, Florida's governor can suspend state efficient state officials for misfeasance, malfeasance neglect of duty drunkenness incompetence or permanent inability to perform official duties or commission of a felony. If you're a prosecutor who won't prosecute, you're not doing your duties. You're not performing your official duties. Now, as Warren's replacement, desantis appointed hillsborough county judge Susan Lopez. She's a former county prosecutor, whom desantis named the bench. Last year.

"Is happening during an unprecedented surge in cova cases in florida due to the delta varian now that many floridian kids are back to school. How are they playing into the growing caseload. And what's the latest with the legal battle joining me today to shed some light on. This is my guest stephanie. Column beanie healthcare reporter for w usf in tampa florida. Welcome to science friday stephanie. Thanks for having me. Our kids back to school in florida for the most part. Yeah florida gets a pretty early start. Compared to some other parts of the country so we had kids back in class on august tenth and more returned as a month went on. But we kind of started to see problems almost immediately with the delta variant so thousands of students and staff in some areas have already had to go into quarantine due to positive kovic cases or being exposed to someone in class so back to school has not been Typical experience for everyone. I'll bet and let's talk about this wild legal battle that's going on in florida. Walk us through. What's been happening with this ban on mask mandates. It has been pretty wild and right. Now we're sort of in limbo but it all started with parents bill of rights law and that went into effect earlier this summer and it basically says parents have the final say about their kids healthcare and then governor rondi santa's issued an executive order banning mask mandates in schools and and. He argues that districts that do require them. Are violating that bill of rights. So that's kind of the nut of all of this because when you're talking about forcing somebody to wear particularly these really young kids to wear massock seven eight hours a day The parent knows what effects that has on them. The parents in the best situation and know how does that affect their learning their attention but it was actually a group of parents who sued the state over this. A judge recently sided with them and he ruled. The governor's ban is unconstitutional seven. The same way in our schools can require kids get a measles vaccine for example in order to protect the broader student body. They can have other health requirements so long as they're reasonable and he's had following. Cdc guidelines on masks is reasonable and then the judge blocked the state from enforcing the ban and punishing districts that have these mandates because the state had threatened to withhold funding. Well the state went ahead and did it anyway this week and they withheld funding that amounted to the salaries of school. Board members from two districts in broward latch. Wha county is they were sort of the first ones to really defy the state with these mass mandates but more had followed suit and now they're under investigation from state officials and facing the same threats hillsborough county where tampa's located is one of them. The governor's defending the move says the state's appealing the case. But we have also seen more districts. Approved mass mandate since the ruling so now about half the students in the state Ten public schools where masking is in place. So we'll see what happens next. Wow do we expect aid coming from washington. I know the white house said that any school that was punished. They would make up the money. That is what they had proposed when these threats were kind of i made were still waiting to see how it's all going to pan out. But the biden administration had said that schools who were punished could use federal stimulus money to make up for lost funding. So it is definitely possible that these districts will make out okay financially but at the same time you know. They not lost money from the state was federal dollars. Could go towards something else. So school officials are are definitely very concerned and we have heard. Some districts are exploring their own. Legal options is a ban on mask mandates with floridians. Even want that depends on who you ask The political divisions in florida right now are very much reflective of what you see across the country so there are definitely parts of the state where the majority of people support this kind of band. They are not sending their kids to school in mass but other parents are furious about it and they were really pushing for their districts to do more to protect their kids. We've seen people very very passionate about this issue. Make their cases at school board meetings lately for example. Hillsborough county man. Bill carl he. Very much opposed. The governor's ban on mass mandates. He feared for his family's safety and and he got really emotional at the emergency meeting that the school board had called to determine whether they were going to defy that ban says the father of two counties students in a beautiful teacher wife. I beg you to institute a real mask mandate but most of all. I beg today have courage. And we do know that the county move forward with stricter mandate that only allow for medical opt-outs and that didn't make everyone happy this mom ellen jackson. She did not want her kids to have to wear mass and she was pretty mad about it. Why have you chosen to break the law. I voted for you and your breaking the law and muzzling my children so she was angry. But we've seen people even angrier. We've seen fights break out at some of these meetings. Violence police having to be called so it has definitely been a crazy scene in some places. What do you think is telling though is when you look at a school district like hillsborough. They started the school year with a looser basque requirement. Parents could opt out for any reason they just had to fill out a form and even then only about fifteen percent of students went that route so vast majority of families were okay following the rules and sending their kids to school in mass whether they felt strongly about it or not and hillsborough leans democratic but even mostly conservative counties like sarasota went onto mandate mass. So you know. Even a conservative leaning district is cracking down on. That really is interesting. Yeah do we know. If cases are rising in florida with the kids there we do they. They are rising and just shows that the delta variant really is changing the game when it comes to how this virus is affecting children so kids under twelve made up the largest portion of new cases according to last week's update from the state they do these weekly reports there was more than twenty.
