State attorney's office drops latest misdemeanor battery charge against Antonio Brown
"Battery charges have been dropped against a former NFL wide receiver. And we went on a holiday as a family and when I was away, I was on MSN, again, of course, I was indoors on the computer when I was abroad with my family. And I remember running up to my room to see my mom and you know like when you're a child and you cry so hard that you lose your breath and you think that's the end. That was so catastrophic this was to me. And I'd recently been a part of a drama festival in Liverpool in the saint George's hall and it was this wonderful festival where there would be groups of say like 20 children, roughly around the same age and each one would have to perform a monologue and I'd recently done that and I did a piece from a local playwright about the hillsborough disaster. And I'd won. My mom was like, well, come on. You know, go home and ask your drama teacher if you can do you monologue. And I was like, okay. Flecked up the courage and she made me audition. She made me show her my monologue. And she let me do it. And then a couple of months later, there was a request from the BBC. They were looking for a young girl to play the lead in a radio drama. And my drama teacher had gotten the request, and she drove me to the audition. And that was my first ever audition. And it was my first ever professional job. I got it. So getting mean girls out of so block tango was the best thing that ever happened to you. It was the start for me. Yeah. Every cloud, I couldn't see it at the time, you know, but now it's so funny, you know, because one of the girls is still now my best friend, and whenever I ever get asked about this, she's like, oh my God, I'm so sorry. I mean it's not just a hillsborough county issue because it's a regional problem right because there are people who work in pinellas hillsborough or vice versa. The live in pasco or or some other part of the metro area. Are we any kind of closer to coming up with a regional framework regional plan to improve transit in all the counties of the tampa bay reaching a kirk. We have a t bar which that was their legislative role was to you know not just look at hillsborough county but beyond it and do regional projects act on it Conduct studies which they've been doing numerous studies for i would say the most. The largest one was significant. One would be the rapid regional transit project and that line would go through.

Supreme court struck down. The county's transportation sales tax veronica brasilia's smith covers transportation for the tampa bay business journal. So starting off ronca now that the supreme court has has struck down the the transportation sales tax in hillsborough county. The county is discussing plans to Refund all the taxes collected about half a billion dollars. How would that work potentially so first of all. That's a good question that's on everybody's minds right now. The county has agreed to work with the department of revenue as well as the local circuit courts. Right now they're saying i. You know that discussion has to go through the circuit courts and still keep discussion at the department of revenue. Although it's not up to the department so it's really up to the courts right now but what that looks like potentially is i mean i could see people you know retaining those huge receipts of big purchases they made but i cannot imagine everyone having baskets of receipts for every single purchase and get refunded to the exact sent. And so i. I could see being refunded that way through the big purchases through the minor ones and everything else. I can't But there might be a more effective way to do so but at this point in time no one knows exactly how that looks and we know when the florida supreme court issued their opinions. They did not address that issue. Will the group all for transportation which promoted the the twenty eighteen of charter amendment which set up the original tax. I know they're still active. What are what are they up to. Now what tyler hudson in christine are the ones who really took it on. Christina still is working through dj. Tyler hudson is on the heart board. And so you now. Eighteen fifty seven percent of hillsborough county voters approved a one cent sales tax to fund transportation improvements everything from sidewalks to better transit but after a long legal battle. Florida supreme court struck down the tax last month. Voters might have their say on a replacement tax in twenty twenty two but beth alden says fills boroughs transportation infrastructure. Can't wait. She's executive director of the hillsborough county metropolitan planning organization. Will beth. thanks again for for making Making time for us today We wanted to talk to you a little bit about transportation planning and funding Now that the the offer to transportation tax has been has been struck down in the county is dealing dealing with the ramifications of that but just to get started here in general hillsborough county before this tax and now that the tax has been struck down. How has transportation projects been been funded sure so transportation projects are largely funded with the gas tax. Which is collected at the at the pomp. And it's a it's a flat amount per gallon. It's does not vary by the cost per gallon of the gas and so As we have had more fuel-efficient vehicles over the years which is a good thing but it does mean that since this is a flat tax per gallon that the actual goes down. The value of the gas tax also has eroded against inflation over the years and so in florida is generally a low tax state. That's one of the things that were. We're kinda proud of here in the florida but it does mean that it. It can be very challenging to get adequate funding for some of the basic things. Local governments are responsible for and transportation. Infrastructure is definitely part of that and with the value of the gas tax becoming less and less over the years. it's very challenging the to fund our basic infrastructure so with this offer transportation tax. There was the promise of kind of maybe more steady stream of revenue to go toward various transportation projects. What were some of the projects that were in the pipeline when this when this tax was proposed and the county could have potentially move forward on if if the tax were upheld by the supreme court. One of the one of the reasons why the court had concerns about this tax is that it did set aside specific slices of the funding for specific types of projects. and so the funding would have been largely directed to some of those essential infrastructure pieces of our infrastructure that that everyone takes for granted so i would have been split about half and half between roads and public transit and the part that would go to the roads that was twenty six percent for managing congestion like having smarter traffic signals. Twenty percent for Maintenance and twelve percent for walking bike improvement fifteen percent could be spent on anything The supreme court's concern was that tied the hands of the county commission and under state law. it's up to the county commission to decide what the sales tax would get used for But we've seen all across the country that citizens support having these kind of very accountable guidelines for what funds should be spent on And so what may have been a selling point to.
