"Who are some of the other native authors present? Well, I did a session with Gordon Henry. And so we talked about actually our session was authenticity in literature. And so oh my gosh, so you're asking me who all was there? I would need to get my list. I did a session with Diane Wilson. We talked about seeds. That was a different session. Oh my gosh, let's see. I'm going to see Craig Howe and Nick estus. Actually, I've got my Facebook page up here, Joel waters, Atlantica Lee, Gabrielle, Atari is. So yeah, there was just, I don't know. It sounds like it was really, really well attended. And let's go back to dance at the return and I like what I'm hearing this whole Supernatural approach and the sci-fi element, which draws you to that kind of Supernatural type of writing. Well, you know, every tribe has their stories, cosmology stories, and they have entities that they can talk about or not talk about. And I think they're interesting because they're unpredictable. And again, I write fiction because it's kind of a stress release, but I also read fiction as a stress relief. I was talking to Andy yesterday about this that we like to read and listen and watch things that are different from what we have to deal with every day. And I just find horror and strange things like the X files. Just to be fascinating. You know, cryptozoology, things like that. Because you don't really, you don't really know. You sort of see them out of the side of your eye and you look and maybe they're there, maybe they're not. But again, you know, the things that I write about, these are based on my tribal stories. So I don't pull them out of the air. And nobody has complained about it. And they've seen my fellow tribes people seem to really enjoy it. Well, you know, it's interesting, because we were talking earlier about Tony hillerman, Tiffany was mentioning how, you know, some of the things he wrote about, and

"Tiffany, and why is it important as native people that we have fiction literature? I can't really attest that books in themselves. I mean, basically, stories are the backbone of Native American culture, right? I mean, we're storytellers. And everybody will say that for you. But let's see, like, for instance, one of my big contentions, my bones is contention is the fact that for so many decades and decades and decades ever since the Native American literature, that non native writers have sort of had the bulk of all of the novels that are being published. And when I see books like shutter and when I say see books like Devin's books and this other Marcy Rendon, she's later sign a should not be. And she has a mystery series. That's doing really well. So when I see these books coming out, I think, well, goodbye, Tony hillerman. He doesn't get to reign supreme as the leading representative of southwestern. This is a slice anymore, you know? She's not native. And with so few indigenous books written by indigenous writers, it's as acceptable for non native writers to write these books and for publishers to publish them and for readers to even buy them. Up until very recently. And I mean very recently, this was how things were. Yeah, and I want to remember that. Hillerman is making a huge resurgence with the dark wind series and what's your thought on that that, you know, he's still being celebrated all these years later with this new series. I know. And it's really weird to me, especially in light of the fact that there are so many amazing, wonderful books that are talking about really authentic things that are entrenched within the culture that people like hillerman wouldn't have any understanding of. And shouldn't even really be talking about, you know, it's just, it's not as culture. And I watched that series and I had a good time watching it, you know, made a lot of people upset because of the representation. And just the errors and the cultural inaccuracies and things like that. But I mean, it was still a good show, but hopefully we'll see more content coming out that's from native perspectives. It's authentic from native perspective. Okay. Well, Tiffany, you also have something new to share with us today an audiobook. I could say that I have an audiobook that came out.

"Artists say that a shift is underway in Hollywood. They're shedding the sidekick or villain image for more modern and well rounded representations that give a fuller picture of American life. As the entertainment industry seeks to portray a more diverse swath of American life, one place that is making some progress is in programming that features indigenous culture. Recent examples span genres and time periods, pray is a sci-fi horror action flick set on an 18th century great plains. Dark winds, based on the books by Tony hillerman, is a noir crime thriller series on AMC, set in the 1970s, southwest. And the team comedy drama, reservation dogs, takes place in contemporary rural Oklahoma. Whether on the big screen or streaming on a laptop, the content is setting new standards for authenticity, and the representation of native people. This progress hasn't happened overnight, native artists say, and more is still needed. But beyond moving past old stereotypes, the shift is bringing a new sense of empowerment to native audiences. For decades, the only space native people had was to be extras in movies, or to be consultants, correcting mistakes on technical issues, says Paul chat Smith, a Comanche author and essayist, and curator at the Smithsonian's national museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.. What's new is you have native people in leading positions. He adds. That's a shift people have been waiting for for a long time. The story was reported by Henry gas for

"You were still a little bit there. It was really good. So we've got another caller on the line tish listening in Wisconsin on W O JB. Tish, thanks for calling in. Hey there. I'm really enjoying the conversation and I'm looking forward to tomorrow night. I'm calling from Radcliffe. I am clocked out. I want to make sure I point that out because I'm at work, but I had a question because rizel had talked a lot about taking material that is so familiar to the larger larger population and moving it forward. And I'm really interested in how the writers looked at that and saw it in terms of kind of the greater message with that because they're getting these performers out there. Are they getting the talent out there? And exposing them to a wider audience with something they're already familiar with. And I just can't I'm really starting to think of like the ripple effect of things like that. And I'm wondering if the writers kind of saw that bigger picture when they were doing this. Okay. Well, tish, thanks for that question. And let's go ahead and let roselle respond to that. Question about working with that non native material and that whole experience. Well, yeah, I mean, I think it's well, first of all, thank you, tish for listening. And hope all is well out that your way. Yeah, talking about this source material. I think all of us in the room were just, you know, super, super excited to lend our own experiences to really make this as. Indigenous specific Navajo specific, especially. And because many of the people behind the series are indigenous, we really wanted to showcase more complexity. You know, within folks, Navajo folks so that people can really understand us more because no two navajos are like no two native people are like all tribes are different, but I think it's really important that. We were given the freedom to take these well-known characters and really flush them out and really kind of make them like real people. So there's really like a balance that you and a dance that you have to do. And I think a lot of it had to do with trust. The network trusted us and we trusted them and we had the grace of everyone involved, including George R. R. Martin to Anne hillerman to, of course, bob Redford and it was, you know, it's hard to do. It really is you can't please everybody and that's the thing. You know, there's going to be there's going to be critics. There's always going to be critics. I think the important thing for us was to just ensure that this was a series that people can have fun watching and that people will want to continue watching. Okay. Yeah, thanks for sharing that. And let's let Billy chime in as well. Billy, you know, we've been talking a lot about, you know, as writers, how you adapted this original source content from Tony hillerman and if you could talk a little bit about that, we're going to have to wrap up here the next couple of minutes, but talk a little bit about that. That process from your perspective. And also, Billy, really, what is it that you would like for viewers this Sunday to really take away from this new series?.

"Yeah, definitely. Well, it certainly I just appreciate these multi dimensional native characters that we saw or that their viewers are going to see there in dark winds and we're seeing like our writers have talked about earlier. We're seeing more and more of that. The depth of the stories, the depth of the characters, and I'm just really grateful that we're moving away from some of these more one dimensional kind of stereotypical roles that we've seen in the past and what are your thoughts on that, Eugene? Yes, I mean, it's changing. It's a kind of thankful to be a part of this time where taking back narrative and results ahead is having that storytelling. I mean, it's huge in indigenous culture. It's our oldest tradition. So to take that and take back the narrative and responsible way is great. And again, with more writers in the room and. To answer to be a part of this time where we're, you know, through our lens, right? It's always. You know what I haven't seen with other stories and other things of, you know, either projects and a lot of the history that we know even looking up in research and care is it's always the non indigenous perspective again to get ragged in the room and change that and that's huge. Yeah, long overdue. We've got a caller Bill listening on KU and M in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill, you're on the air. Hey, thanks. You know, I read everything, all those Tony hill and novels, even some Anne hillerman and just really appreciate this show. I thought I was getting the inside scoop forever and then found out maybe not so. So I'm looking forward to seeing what gets put on the TV. Thank you. You bet Bill, thanks for calling in. And let's talk a little bit more about it. You mentioned Ann hillerman because Tony hillerman, he passed away a number of years ago and his daughter after he passed picked up the torch and she published some of these Chi and Lee porn novels after his passing. And there's even one of the characters that is in this movie now. There's new series that we're talking about dark ones. That's actually a character that was developed by Anne hillerman. And let's ask Billy about that because Billy, what was that like? You're actually, you know, we talk about Tony hillman's legacy Tony Hillary's legacy. But as writers, you were also working with his daughter and hillerman's legacy as well, right?.

And Brazil right before we went to break, you touched upon some of these challenges with regard to a non native writer, Tony hillerman, the legacy in, you know, he is a polarizing figure amongst many native people, especially navajos. You know, he wrote a lot of books and he made a lot of money writing about Navajo culture and lifestyle. And I know some people feel he crossed the line at times and shared information that shouldn't have been made public and I just want to note it. Did you Billy and the other native writers?.

"So my parents were alive in the 60s and 70s as children and teenagers and there's something really special about what books like this can do for a generation when they've never seen themselves in on TV or in media. And so for that, I'm grateful because my dad, he was an artist and he also studied anthropology and went to Rutgers university to get his master's in anthropology like Jolie porn. And so I think there was, you know, I think there was my parents, they really did enjoy reading this book. And for me, you know, because the books were always around, you know, I had a thumb through them, read them, and as a kid and didn't really understand that it was written by a non native LA became a teenager a radical punk rock teenager became anti everything. And so, you know, when I got older, I wasn't a fan, you know, to be honest, I grew up as I would say as a fan, but then when I got older, I think there was just some underlying anger and resentment of how could this non native be writing about us? And then as you get older, you know, you look back and how much things have influenced you and it inspired you and I think at this moment in time, it's like, you know, I sometimes just don't know how I feel. About, you know, when it comes to non natives writing about natives or making movies about natives. So on and so forth. And so I would say, you know, I'm thankful I'm thankful that these books existed because I wouldn't exist without them, you know? Okay. Yeah. Well, we're going to have to take a break here and just a short moment, but I want to talk a little bit more about that. Tony hillerman, that legacy and he's definitely a polarizing figure. Amongst native people, as you say, and we'll talk more about that. Anybody with a question or comment, give us a call, one 809 9 6 two 8 four 8. "Two Navajo tribal police officers get swept up in a thrilling, murder mystery at a Navajo Nation outpost in the early 1970s. That's the stepping off point for the new AMC series dark winds, which premieres this Sunday. The TV series features a lot of native talent, both in front of and behind the camera. They include director Chris air and showrunner Graham Roland. The source material for dark winds is taken from the late Tony hillerman's Lee porn and Chi novels. The stories from the non native hillerman get it decidedly native treatment from the series writers and producers. On the show today, we'll hear from those involved in adapting these works for television and we also want to hear from you. Are you a Joe Lee porn or Jim Chi fan? Are you planning to watch dark winds this weekend? Join our conversation one 809 9 6 two 8 four 8. One 809 9 native. On the show today, we have Billy Luther. He's a writer for the television series dark wins, and he's speaking with us from Los Angeles, California. He's Navajo hopi and laguna. Billy, welcome back to native America calling. Hi. Thanks for having me. You bet, Billy, and I had a chance this week to get a sneak peek at dark wins, streamed a few episodes. That's a perk of being the host here early access to some cool TV series and movies. And I just want to say I really enjoyed it. Very engaging show. Congratulations to you and everyone else involved in the production. Awesome. Thank you. Yeah, no, there's a lot of love, blood, sweat, tears, that went into this. And I can't believe it's finally here. On Sunday, it's really cool. Yeah, almost two days away, and I've got so many questions that I'm excited to talk to you and other guests. I'm not quite sure where to begin, but why don't you start us off with a brief summary of the show? Yeah, you know, the series is based on the novels from Tony hillerman. And we actually took a couple of them listening woman was one of the shows I'm sorry the books that we used for inspiration and also just parts of people of darkness. And it was really kind of interesting to see how the writers room let me first say that the writers room was all of native it was an all native writers room, which is very rare. For our TV drama. But so read those two books. And those books I grew up with, it was just something that in our homes growing up. And many people remember these books because of Jo Lee porn and really kind of going through and solving crimes on the Navajo reservation. And this one, this series is definitely one of those. We've just follow these two characters, you know, their personal lives as well as the crime that they're trying to solve. So it was really great to kind of go in and get these characters to be a little bit more evolved and more elements of their Navajo Ness. Yes, you could say. Yeah, they're dabbling. And let's talk a little bit more about how the show compares to the original source content. It's been a few years since I've read any Tony hillerman, but right away it was apparent that you and the other writers have reworked many of the storylines and characters..

"I say well how do you. You're not being tricked. When you're in the experience i would say that if you are dealing with some extremely advanced race or some very powerful spiritual entity you don't have any way of knowing you're not being tricked and so taking everything it says at face value is it might be the right way to go but might not and you have no way of knowing which one of those is true is the right one. So it's it's it's it's difficult you know. Is it better to investigate the phenomenon from outside of it that also may not be it and we're up on another break here. Yeah this and the other option you know is. This is totally materialistic. Right nick the biological robot would tell us yeah like no. There's no spirit there's no spirit realm okay so going with that idea. Then we're just talking about agent aliens. Yeah i mean that's right. We're talking about technology indistinguishable from magic and so demons and all that kind of stuff. None of that's real. Which would mean that. The these occult practices all bs to right. And it's just you know it's it's but even that we'll get to it in in the last segment. But it's possible that the occult practices can still be a product of a totally mechanistic view of the universe. All right acknowledging they worked in Some of them might works. "You know. so that's kind of where that comes from all the titles. But i think has a little stick around that of what the story is going to be. Then i do research and find out things that will complement their storyline. Yeah i usually ask. Authors what fighters inspired them and in your case. I know there's some obvious suspects like tony. Hillerman greg johnson. Let me tony tony for sure. One of the books. I've picked up after robert parker spencer series was some tony's books you know i sorta reason though so robert b parker. Tony hillerman john d. Mcdonald you know craig lately guy. I met craig along time ago and we message back and forth in email. Sometimes you know get things together but it's it's one of those things where reading them. I told him about her dad. I says you know. Your father taught me about the landscape and john d. Mcdonald taught me about you. Know setting up things you know that writing in general parker told me about dialogue mic. Explain taught me about you know action and in a novel you know and hemingway. A robert robert parker had his whole thing was was raymond chandler. Maybe he is circle. That and that's how spencer came about. This dissertation in college was about as i and they grow. You can see these writers tony and robert. When they're first novels came out as they grew throughout the series as a writer. You could tell and things are still volved and got much better and that's going to happen to meet everybody else to writes it. The more you do it. The more devolves gets better. That's great at least right into my next question. Actually i was gonna ask you what advice you would give to aspiring novelists. Oh boy I think number one is never give up on yourself. Never let somebody else tell you. You can't do that because you're a dream isn't there drain and they have no way reason or know how that affects you so always always go. The best always doing reach that goal rain. Because you know it's it could be out there you never know but you don't know unless you try you know Study as much as you can research as you are. I know as much as you can about things because none of us know everything and the more we research i learned about things. I never thought it would alert about in my life. You know before doing this. And it's just an incredible mind. A lot of knowledge let you evolve as or more. You can do that the more you find out about that and just never give up never ever give. It's so true and we learn so much from each other writers do and he's like you said rapper conquer started with raymond chandler. The essentially recreating him. His dick is a tightrope which he then uses to also balance way. This guy's dick wait baked bagel hammer. Heads big this is big because first of all. He's wearing just a white. He looks like a candy cane dick mechanic yet but it's like a long snake thing his dick in this photo. It's literally if you type in john hillerman. It is the first image that pops up and he's standing in his backyard. Yep he's standing in his backyard this and his dick a snake down out and then it's up in the air holding onto a gas can. That's starting a fire on a grill. Actually he's pointing gas on like meat. That's cooking not how you got a good idea. Yeah he's probably poisoning. Somebody i mean with that dig way more harm. This is the picture of him walking dogs with his dick big big dog dick walker dude. What the hell bro. He's playing tennis with himself. He's holding wanting to dick as well holding other. Just say you sent tnt a real. Don't try to come from uneducated. Danish cinema and words was fucking like crazy. Like i couldn't believe it did you watch it. I watch like clips. And he's like yo. Mike happy with the dick and then they asked like there was like some interview with the people that made it. Because it's like a kid show and they're like yo like what is up like. Why is this guy and they were like. Oh it's not a penis and they're like definitely a php also. It's not advertise a penis. The me yeah. The guy's name is john dickman and they said no. It's not a pianist. But they say it is. Then they're all right back like it is a genus but it's not centralized. Hey you made a whole tv show about a penis. Guess what in a penis in is its nature is literally used for two things evacuation and procreation nice so inherently it is sexual masturbation. Sure more more more. Asian nature in nature. It's used for those two things right. Naturally like you can go your whole life without jerking off would be. I fucking murderer bill crazy. But i couldn't believe this and it's like it's very and they're like oh we do this so kids don't have to be like i would say the word that i'm to barest and self conscious kids have twenty dick's because this thing this be embarrassed about what having a big old floppy dick john. I don't think there's a way that you can have a show about a penis. This not like big all like candy cane. Look dick and i like the idea of having shows where you teach kids about like their body and stuff like that do what benefit is this. Show having on anybody if anything i did as a kid and being like damn. You'll know what's going to happen. You're gonna have kids like trying to stretch their fucking. Pp's out or trying to save people. What their penises or trying to walk the dog with their tax that that's the most dangerous i think because the dog if my dog at mytalk was attached my penis and he saw squirrel goodbye penis. "Have linebackers trump dropping back into coverage to And underneath zones you can try to get the ball See if you can force the ball to kelsey and not necessarily let him catch it. You wanna have your linebacker undercut that ball. Try to force a turnover. So there's gotta be that surprises patrick mahomes and there's just this unfortunate for defenses. It's it's been really tough to do. He's so mentally smart so quick to see what's happening before it happens. That's why he doesn't throw any interceptions. He's just extremely smart and he rarely makes mental mistakes in. You mentioned that the bucks really have gotten their act together recently. What what's been the biggest reason for that. Is it defensively. I know that it's always a storyline and was a storyline. this year. You know the short off season and brady working with a personnel groupings offensively. But what is it in your mind. That has made things click for tampa so recently in the biggest game of the year. I think offensively even spreading the wealth. More they've been attacking us often exposing brady less to to less things that are out of control so the you're compensating for an offensive line. That's decent so you don't want to throw the ball deep too often and also brady's deep passing this year's been pretty poor so lot more short passes which we know he's great at intermediate passes rotating the receivers. I think has been smart. He likes Scotty miller ally. I think that's been surprising. Connection this season Hillerman very productive antonio brown trying to force it to him a little bit less Get chris godwin involve get him healthy. Keep him involved in an offense. Those are all keys that they've been doing on offense defensively. I think this is just maturation. I think some of it's just the pass rush playing better vida getting him back to play a little bit has been helpful. Jason pierre paul playing great the season Shaquille basement playing better as the season progressed. So i think this individually. You're looking at guys coming into their own. And that's really the biggest thing for me is needed playmakers on defense and they finally got those guys to play like playmakers. So it you know. I don't know if it's like the cova stuff young players being young. But that's been the key for them is all of a sudden they have defense. They can hold you. You know to twenty or so points. And if that's the case they have the weapons to score thirty or so we've seen score forty. I think like four or five times on the season so they have high powered offense to. Yeah and you just knew. Buffalo probably wasn't going to be able to do that right like we've seen the chiefs play from ahead play from behind. It doesn't really seem to matter. Is that game went on on sunday. He just kind of had the feeling like The chiefs were hanging around in. Buffalo's gonna pay for that. Yeah it was over a fourteen. Two nine i. It felt over which is insane right like buffalo was gifted essentially six points with a muffed punt. Obviously the quick field goal to start the game. So you know nine zero. You know you'd think okay cool like buffalo chance. Kansas city even comfortable coming from behind. It's still this might be the team. That actually overtakes. Because josh allen obviously really good playmaker at wide receiver. They've got a ton of options so it felt almost like the recipe of this could be the moment. They finally lose when they fall behind but once that she started getting chunk plays was just like oh buffalo camp coverage..

Jason pierre paul josh allen Buffalo Shaquille six points twenty patrick mahomes kelsey five four nine this year sunday chris godwin thirty antonio brown trump zero Two nine over a fourteen

Both sides of his character the brilliance and the controversial displayed in that quarterfinal against england in mexico. England fans will never forget or forgive the moment. He used his fist to beat. Peter shilton for the game's first goal. The hand of god maradona later called it but no one could argue with the skilled at produced his second in that game. Probably one of the best world cup goals ever but he'll be remembered for many things. Good and bad. Many believe pele and maradona with the best of all time after surgery for a bleed on the brain he was thought to be recovering before cardiac arrest ended. Remarkable life huge right. He is going to be in the discussion later as well. I did not recognize the name but really go. I just said never heard of it. And i kinda feel like oh boy. I just missed this.
