And she said, and I quote we've grown a lot in this industry and we've grown a lot in representation, and we've grown a lot in terms of understanding the needs of African American actresses. But the truth is, if they had done my hair, and they had done it very poorly in the front, so basically her edges were looking crunching. Well, I know this is black and blue. Will we talk about responsible culture issues, right. But there's something Yeah, they do need to be black and blue. That's ahead you're on the world. I'm Marco Werman your with the world. We are co production, of GBH BOSTON NPR ex China Russia and Cuba three countries. You probably do not think of when it comes to exemplary human rights records. But yesterday, these three were admitted to the UN Human Rights Council human rights activists have been vocal in opposing this people like Hillel Neuer, he's the executive director of UN watch a Geneva based NGO which monitors the United Nations. Hello. What was your reaction to these three countries China Russia, and Cuba getting seats on the UN Human Rights Council. Well I thought it was a black day for human rights at the United Nations. This is a body, the Human Rights Council that was created with the express purpose of holding abusive regimes to account and defending the rights of individuals suffer oppression and discrimination, and instead the United Nations appointed some of the most notorious abusers of fundamental freedoms. Russia. which poisons dissidents, China, which silences whistle blowers were trying to sound the alarm over the coronavirus. Cuba which is a police state that's been existing for six decades that likewise throws human rights activists in prison and journalists. The notion that these would be the world judges of Human Rights is absolutely ankle. So, backup a moment in just help us understand how does a system actually work at the council? How many members are there? How do they get voted in? The Human Rights Council's a forty-seven nation body countries served for three year terms and every year there's elections are staggered. So every year about fifteen countries go off in fifteen countries go on. So we had the elections yesterday and officially the General Assembly member states are supposed to vote based on human rights considerations and bender the founding charter council. Council members are obliged to uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights yet notwithstanding those criteria, the sad tragic reality is that countries at the UN typically allow politics to trump human rights principles, and in the end the reason that China Russia Cuba were elected because countries acted according to political considerations, not according to rights principles. Could, you argue that by bringing these three countries China, Russia and Cuba into the fold, it'll be kind of human rights school and will potentially could keep them more accountable. One could argue that but. It's not a credible argument. Sadly, it is a line that we here at the United Nations by diplomats part of the system I hear this argument it may be the case are certain countries that have problematic past, and then her on a new journey towards a post authoritarian system as really committed to reform. But when you go visit Madero Venezuela were elected to the council again. And again did they learn and improve or on the contrary they throw more journalists more judges more opposition leaders in prison ever before when Vladimir Putin was elected again, and again as he was yesterday did Russia's learned improved or on the contrary did they invade more neighboring territories dropped more barrel bombs on Syria and poisoned more dissidents than ever before and the same goes with China So he'll the US withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council in two, thousand, eighteen, it said the council had failed in its mission. The trump White House has backed away from a lot of UN programs how significant is a US absence from council and along with the admission of Cuba Russia and China. Now, what's it all mean for human rights globally. Well I think the the US and other democracies have a dilemma because the dictatorship fighting be there and they are acting vigorously more than ever before to corrupt the ideas of individual human rights. So the US took the approach out I understood why they did it I disagreed with that approach I testified before the Senate before Congress and said that actually those who are critics of the council, they should fight and be there and call out injustices. Can you just a few more details on that? If the UN Human Rights Council were to work the way you think it should keeping nations accountable for human rights abuses globally. What does that look like? Well, it means helping victims on the ground at the end of the day words do matter they do send signals. Word is father to deed and Human Rights Council does not have the power of the purse. They don't have the power of the sword do have the power to shame abusers. Let's not exaggerate it if there's a genocide happening in. Syria. Even Rights Council adopted many resolutions and they have commissions of inquiry. That's all good wonderful I. Don't know if it saved a single person so we shouldn't exaggerate the potential, but it can be one Arrow in the quiver can. Be. Additional tool box we need accountability that means Resolutions Commissions, query emergency sessions. We have a few of them today but far too few and I hold our democracies accountable. The fact that the European Union didn't say a word publicly that this was a bad thing so I think there's a lot of fear and cowardice among our own democracies we need to strength from them. We need to demand that our democratic representatives, US Human Rights Council for what it should be, which is to speak out, defend protect victims, dissidents, and hold abusive regimes to account in any way that they can. Hillel Neuer, he's the executive director of UN, watch a Geneva based NGO which monitors United Nations Hill thank you for the conversation. Thank you. The NBA, figured it out. But generally, pro sports have had a rough go of it during the pandemic in South Korea Soccer Stadiums are limited to twenty five percent capacity right.

Rock was. And I. was like I guess I was off because Indie rock was something else like death cab for Cutie or whatever. But this was like the coolest fucking thing I thought was out there. It was such a bizarre album and but yeah, like you with a lot of the stuff like. Catchy but the songs go all over the place and there's a opera theme kind of throughout it and. Max Beam as their singer. was struggling a lot through this album and like it starts with this. Him talking to his therapist. Scoop And it was just like. It was like this guy's got a lot going on Yeah I mean I saw them a few times on this record and they blew me away every time and yet lyrically super bizarre. In. Like funny. At some points and also super serious and. Well. We're just record or unlike any other band or album I ever heard that I'm not worse or worse than very much. Yeah. The signature thing there that was happening Nothing like you've ever ever heard before. Yeah, and IT'S It's interesting. It's like it is how far can you go with with comedy and songs without it feeling lame and I feel like this record nails it where it's like it's funny but it's just like Holy Shit. Did you just say that and it said in such a way that? You you laugh but it's not a joke. So. Yeah check check this record a-. What else is?.

So she went through grad school to do all the snorkel sort of studies that you would go through to be a therapist and alongside that because she is incredibly musically, gifted, I guess, I'm not going to explain this as well. She would so whoever out there is a music therapist this. Forgive me for However, I messed this up. But what I do know is like she works with anyone espec-, especially kids who have trouble communicating. So a lot of people think oh music therapy is like you play therapy to make someone feel better. Are you play music makes them feel better? It's actually using musical instruments to help someone communicate when they don't have words so kids who are testing or have down syndrome or have had strokes or adults who have a phaser from a stroke. Anyone who has language taken away from them in some way or struggles to access it in some way, she uses music to help them express themselves, and it really is incredible. To watch because he's beautiful. Yeah. You watch these kids who might be throwing tantrums because they can't express it. They just need water or they need a hug or affectionate. They don't have the access to language to do it. And so she lets them develop a language with the instruments that they're gravitating to and then they're able to communicate. So then there's less frustration. And then win language starts become available to them. They transition into being articulate a lot faster because they've been able to express themselves through this sort of musical language. They now have that skill set, and they can transfer it into actual words to me music music to a lot of people is everything. Like for me. I always wanted to be musician. I never had the greatest voice, but I started a band, and I just love it..
