It's rich valdes filling in for Jim bohannon tonight trying to keep you up to speed on what's going on in America at night and we've got a number of topics on the table we talked about inflation we talked about the Wisconsin Supreme Court and their decision to rule that drop boxes are only allowed inside county clerk buildings and we talked about hershel woody Williams and the entire Israel situation, which is really interesting conversation. And we were mid thought with Chris in Santa Clara, California, who was telling us about the landscape and how many apartment buildings are in this neighborhood, Chris. Well, and I'll keep it short, so other people can play too. I guess I'm trying to, you know, if somebody went ahead and took a ballot and then it got put into a blue mailbox or if they happened to have a way on their home where they could have outgoing mail, kind of old school with the mailbox. The little flag on it. Yeah, a little flag on it or something. I mean, it sounds like at least in Wisconsin that wouldn't have been a big deal, even the cliff he ran from newsmax. So that's whether it's on my side on the left or newsmax on the right of everybody would be a gradient in Wisconsin, at least. No problem mailing ballots to the U.S. Postal Service. I look here and I figure, hey, you know, if there's a government managed Dropbox in front of a public school or over at city hall or something like that, why would that be I guess maybe I'm trying to ask you to explain to me. Okay, I understand, based on the way you're posing the question. So this wasn't an arbitrary thing. Like, hey, let's just put these drop boxes, you know, because we've got the pandemic. This was to the tune of it's not really an important fact, but it was like $400 million from Zuckerberg, who he put into several nonprofits. The thing was that these nonprofits weren't, they were supposed to act in a nonpartisan manner, but they didn't necessarily. They only put these drop boxes in Democrat districts. And only promoted it to Democrat candidates. So it was a very partisan outreach operation. They paid for these things and then kind of donated them. So it's private money operating in the public sphere. This was something that had never been done before, and they had them outside the law allows only to have these boxes inside of a county clerk's office. So like if it was closed or if there were not going to be employees, if they were going to be behind plexiglas screen or whatever it was. So that was the gist of that. This wasn't necessarily like the board of elections doing that. This was what they called the zuckerbergs issuing grants to local boards of elections. And that's where it got very, very these public partnerships, these quasi public partnerships got very, very tricky and this is what was overruled with the current case. So there's a lot of nuance to it. But good question and good to know that that came out that way because other people may have perceived it that way as well. So thank you, Chris. I appreciate that. Let us continue our journey across the country to Missouri. Let's go to John and Missouri, John welcome, you're on with rich Valdez. Good evening. My concern is with the electric system reliability this summer. Not only in Texas, but across the Midwest, the reliability councils that are responsible for maintaining reliable grid have already given notice to their member utilities not to do any testing not to do any experimenting with their units. And the load that is being experienced in these areas due to this heat wave is very close to the generating capacity of the network in the stories it's getting pressed now that there could be blackouts or brownouts rotating brownouts, whatever in these areas, but the truth, the complete story is not getting out. What has happened over the last 5 to ten years is there have been a closure of well over 100 coal fired generating plants. To the concern about carbon emissions and decarbonization of the world and I believe that it's been done prematurely because the renewable generating capacity has not yet generated has not yet demonstrated the ability to replace all of this coal fired generating capacity. So you're right on all accounts here. And this was a big argument back in 2008, 2009, where people were saying, look, you know, Obama had launched an attack on coal and saying, look, we're going to get rid of this stuff. And the environmentally conscious left said, yes, we've got to do that. We've got to get rid of it. And in many ways, taking apart that industry and left it standing on a wobbly leg. And now we're looking at the reality of life where we, oh, snap, we actually get electricity from coal. Oh, who thought about that? And now you've got Texas urquhart none of that's what you were referring to, but ercot their energy agency in Texas is telling them, hey look, don't even plug in your electric vehicle unless you absolutely have to because there's so much stress on the grid in Texas. Now I don't know if you were referring to Texas or if you were talking about Missouri. But yeah, this is a problem and it's been a problem in California. And these are all states where there's a small percentage of electric vehicles. So clearly it was, I would go further than saying premature. I would say unrealistic. Again, this is kind of like the idea of us saying, you know, we should have free healthcare and we should have free this and we should have free that and the government should pay for everything and ultimately it just is not a doable proposition. And I think this is the problem that we are running into. So you're a 100% right. We honestly don't have a solution to live in a world that doesn't rely on fossil fuels and we still have the same outcome that we have. Like powering our homes at night using air conditioning in the summer. And driving cars that

"Psychologically it worked. His daddy had given him a rain. It was about, I don't know. Quarter inch in diameter. And his two fingers were grown to gather on both hands like that. So he wore it on this ring on this finger. It took a lot of kidding called marines didn't wear range on this finger. So she fired all this stuff. But I was sitting around talking and talking about home, no doubt. And we made a pack shook hands that if anything happens to me, you ought to get this ring back to dad. And haste to get my ring back to ruby. We shook hands. And when I got to him that day, he was stretched out on the ground, and there was that ring. And that's a court martial defense taking anything off of the dead marine. They tell you that brush. Very forcefully. But I had made that comment. I made that pact with him and court martialed me at court martial may so I finally got the ring off. I had to spin on it in order to get it off. We had bathed for days. Dirty filthy terrible. But I got it off. Put him in my pocket, kept it with me. And after the combat I wrote to the folks and told him that I had to ring. And I would get it back to them. But I was not going to mail it for fear of somebody who would find it and take it. I'll break it. So after I got home and November 45, my wife and I drove all the way to Freud, Montana, brought up next to the Canadian border. I delivered that right. One of the most emotional periods I can have ever had in my life. But during the back where it belonged. My life completely changed the day that I received the man of honor. I'd never heard of it. I didn't know what it was, and I certainly had no idea. Wow, it was going to change my life. But I became a public figure that day. I didn't want to be, had no desire to appear before people. I was a very shy bashful, really timid individual. And yet it probably was the best thing that happened to me because being the recipient involved for the first several months, almost every night, someplace. Just absolute time, time was not my own. And I was forced to talk about just as I am now. I was forced to talk about what happened. And those moments of emotion and those moments of members that you can't forget. And I think it was a therapy for me. So many guys that I associated with in my 33 years of working for the VA, they wouldn't share anything. They wouldn't tell anybody anything. You just ate on them. They never got rid of it. And I had a brother like that that was beat up very badly in the Battle of the Bulge, and when he got home, couldn't get a thing out of him. He just wouldn't talk about it, you know? And it would have been better for him, had he shared those things, but he wouldn't do it. And my work spirits are encountered that a lot. So probably being forced to talk about it, maybe even relive some of those situations. I think it was a good therapy. I didn't suffer as much as many of the other guys did. Sir, unfortunately, our.

"And then put a tag on me. And we had been told over and over. If I come and tag you, he is the final authority. You don't question what he says. There are save your life, so don't question him. And we've been told that when he ties you and tells you that you must go back, you got to go back, because those were the instructions. So he did that, he tagged me and told me now you got to go back. And because of the new marines and so few of us still left and knew what the heck we were doing, I said, I'm not going to go. And he called me a few choice names and said, you got well. Those were the rules. What you got to do. So I reached up and pulled the tag off and I said, I'm not going to go, I don't have a tag on me. And he called me a few more choice words. But I didn't leave. I could walk. I could make it. And just a few minutes. Time frame, you can't measure it based on. But in just a short time after that, my sister, who we didn't have flamethrowers at that time, we were just rifle people. My plane thought, fine for our Schneider came running by me and mortar clothing. Smack dab show the head and killed him instantly. That's why I lost the best friend I've ever had in my life. We were much closer than I watched any of my brothers because our lives depending on each other. And we knew that. He and I had made a pact. Several months before. I had a ring. That my wife to be with lady I was engaged to. Had given me before I left the service. Her name was ruby, and she gave me a ruby ring..

"Of his head, and when that happened, the bullet was coming in on an angle, I guess, because it threw him back in that hole. Just off he went. I can remember seeing him flying back in that hole, and so I called back in the hole. I thought he was dead. And but when I got down there, he was still open, he still breathing and all of that. I am got time for with him. I got, you know, I got to keep on going. So I left him and never did have bull charged man after west, nobody ever volunteered to say, hey, I'll be your pole charged man. Yeah. Now, I didn't have any. But one of the bugger booze is, I don't remember how I got. The other 5 flamethrowers. Because once you use up either the 5 matches in the front of it, the fire, or all the air out of the air tank, or all of the fuel out of the fuel tanks, it's a useless piece of iron. So we were taught and trained, just roll out of it. It had quick snaps on it, just unsnap, let it go. And that's what I did. I can remember doing some of those. I can remember on snapping. Getting out my fine door, but saved my life. I don't know how it got to find for us. I have said many times I'm reasonably certain. That no marine back there and headquarters company said, just wait out there. I'll bring you one. I don't think that happened. But still, I don't know how I got them. But are you 6? So I must have had some way of going back and we had them stored in headquarters company. They weren't out there where I was. But I don't know. But anyway, about getting rid of 7 of those pillboxes that gave us an opening..

"I've been told and I have no proof of this at all. That's something like 800 flights, one offer there to Japan. B-29s. Of course, we had a lot of fighter planes. From there, they could accompany our B-29s all the way to Japan and back to Eugene. So they had that protection. So you're the tip of the spear. You're unit. Blind crushed the airfield. We lost a tremendous number of marines because there's no protection. The only protection we had was a shell crater where they dropped the bomb or a facial artillery hit. And you could get your body into some kind of a hole and you'd get the hole would fill up with marines, which would have been told, don't do that. But survival is more important than somebody order, I guess. But we lost a lot of marines getting across the airfield. Then we hit the stream and our line of pillboxes. And they were reinforced, concrete pillboxes. They had what we call today rebar, but they were just metal. And the concrete so that a bomb hitting it wouldn't destroy it. Artillery hitting the front of it wouldn't do it. Bazookas wouldn't do it because it was so thick and so well supported by the arm rods. So in trying to take those pillboxes on the 22nd of February, why we too are losing a lot of marines because they had all the advantage of field of fire and we didn't have any except that little aperture in the front of a pillbox and. My commanding officer and that was Donald Beck. And he had lost most of his officers, most of the squad leaders were already gone. The 6 guys that I had in my unit that are either wanted or killed and I don't know which and I don't know when or I had no word of where they were..

"And so he had marines just one on top of the other, just bunched up, of course. And as soon as that happened, why he opened up and that's why we lost many of the first day. That night there that night of the first day, we over the loudspeaker were told that we would be going in the next day. We have breakfast at 3 o'clock in the morning and get aboard Higgins boats and head out to the rendezvous area, so we did that. And the waves that day, the water was terribly rough running ten, 12 feet, waves, and so we went out and there would be a group of package boats just running in a circle. I don't know how many were in there ten, 12, or 15, and just go round and round and round and round because they couldn't go into the beach line until the beach master on shore. Gave the word to come on in. Otherwise, you wouldn't know when to go. So we never got that signal. And we rode those things all day long. Everybody got shake shake. There was a terrible day. They took us back that night and put us back on board ship because we couldn't get on the island. And then the next morning we went through the same procedure and backed the rendezvous area and just before noon, that day, the fourth division had been able to start moving around mount sure a bocce to the other shore, and that gave us enough ground that we could come in. And so we landed that day on the 21st of February. And we became the point. We became the spearhead of the group. And it was our job to spearhead straightforward and the 5th and fourth on our left and right. They were to go up the coastlines on each side..

"You couldn't see them until it was too late. Did you wear protective gear? You mentioned all the things you couldn't carry with you if you had the flame thrower, did you have to protect coverings to make sure you didn't burn yourself? Not a bit. We weren't that smart. No, one we were training. We learned rather quickly. You do not fire into the wind, because you're going to get the result, not him. And if you fire it at body shoulder level, it doesn't go anywhere simply because of wind resistance. It burns out before it can go anywhere. That's why this gunnery sergeant came up with the idea of firing it on the ground and let it roll. Because the wind resistance wasn't there. And I don't know whether any other outfit ever did that or not. I have no idea. I've never talked to another flamethrower operator that just have an encountered one. With some other some of the other combination. And I'd like to we'll come right back on veterans chronicles. Welcome back to veterans chronicles. I'm Greg Columbus, honored to be joined today by Herschel woody Williams, Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima. And we're now at the stage of your story where we can talk about the Battle of Iwo Jima, February 1945. Take us ashore. Okay, when we boarded the ship off Guam, that's where we had lived since we had taken Guam in the previous July in August. We had a more chip. Brought out a board that had a diagram on it that outlined the looks of Iwo Jima. And that's where we first learned, where we were going, and the night of it. And but we were a reserve division to the fourth and 5th divisions. And each one of those divisions had 20,000 people in them. So we were just a backup, in case they would need us, and we were told that probably we would never get off ship. They would get us together up on the top deck. Everybody sit down and they would brief us. And of course, they would do that over and over because we had about 20,000 people on that ship. That would probably be gone. 5 days, and then not be used, didn't think they would have to have it. Because the island was only two and a half miles. Wide, and 5 miles long, and were just taking Guam that I think was 16 miles from coastline to coastline. So nobody could have imagined that it was going to take that long to take 36 days to take that little piece of rock. And we didn't have any intelligence about The Rock at all. The only thing that we apparently knew for sure is the underwater demo people from the navy had gone in and cleared the coastline where the haggis books were going to come in to make sure they weren't bombed the boat shop..

"Into the air, which is going to hit resistance, we shoot it on the ground and roll it into a cave or roll it into a pillbox, because the ball of flame would be 8 ten feet in diameter. It's just a huge ball orange ball of flame. And that's what we started training with, and that's exactly finally ended up. That's what we did. So when we got ready to leave Guadalcanal and go to Guam to take the island of Guam, we mixed many 55 gallon drums of that mixture. So that when we got there, we would have available, we had 15 or 20 flamethrowers already serviced ready to go when we got there. And so that was that was the fuel that I was using on February the 23rd, 1945, because we continued to use that. After after Guam was not, it's briefly talked about Guam because that was the first time you got to use it. I would imagine. So what was it like to put all this training into practice? Well, actually, when we hit Guam, Guam was almost totally coral rock. Very difficult to dig caves or very difficult to build a structure on, if you will. Because coral rock was, I think, it's harder than rock. That's possible. Although I carried a flamethrower a lot for the first four or 5 days of the combat on Guam, I never had an opportunity to use it. My assistant, each guy had to have an assistant because all of the stuff that you would normally carry as a rifleman. Your bedroll, your pack, your extra ammunition, your grenades, all that other stuff, you couldn't do that with the flamethrower. So my assistant would have to carry everything I couldn't carry. So you had to have an assistant to a gesture. During the first 5 days of Guam, when we hit the beach, we had a huge hill, we caught it a hill. I don't think they ever called it a mountain, but a huge hill in front of us. And the Japanese were up on the ridge. So for 5 days, we kept trying to get up that hill to the top of the ridge, and every time we had tried, they'd be dispatched. They had all the advantages and we didn't have any. And finally, after 5 days with a lot of airplane bombing and striking and that kind of stuff we finally got to the top of the hill and set up our own defense on top of the ridge. But I never had an opportunity to use the fine Thor because from there on, were in jungle. I mean, real thick jungle, almost sometimes you'd have to crawl in order to get through it. So then have a useful frame Thor. The Japanese couldn't dig any caves, and they couldn't dig any holes, their principal defense there was to camouflage themselves, either on the ground or in trees, and you couldn't find them..

"It was a, it was a replacement center where the marines came in to this center, and then they would send them out to the various marine divisions. At that time, we had four divisions who had first second third and fourth. And they would send them out to fill in the vacancy of people who had been wounded or killed, and that was the nations. And third marine division, at that point, was on bougainville. And set us a group of us from New Caledonia to Guadalcanal. And from Guadalcanal we were supposed to go from there to New Caledonia. I mean, to bougainville to fill in the slots of wounded and killed marines there. But before they can get us all organized and shipped out, the marines on Doug and Vale security island, or they declared it secured. And they came to Guadalcanal. They had come from New Zealand to bougainville. Now they come to Guadalcanal, and we join the division there. And that's where I was selected, volunteered, if you will. I was told a long time before that date in the Marine Corps. Don't volunteer for anything. There's bad idea. But I was volunteered for frame floor demolition, specialist group. Which was just forming because we had never seen a flamethrower before. We had hadn't had them. We had a manual with it that's told us how to tear it apart and how to put it back together, but no method of how to use it. What's the procedure? How do you strap the 70 pound thing on your back and do something? So we had no manual that told us that. So we had to work that out. Describe it a little bit to how big, how long, how heavy. Okay. The unit was formed. I was a, I was a browning automatic rifle, individual in a squad. When I was selected to be a flamethrower. Operator. And they selected 6 of us from the company from C company. And assigned a gunnery sergeant to be our immediate supervisor. It was his job to train us about the flamethrower. So there was a form or an information sheet with it that said we would use what we called for a Fox first gel. It was a powder that we mixed with gasoline that turned it into a sticky gel with phosphorus in it. So that if the phosphorus hits something burning, of course, because when we went out at the end of the gun or the flamethrower set it a fire because we had a cylinder out there that lit that let the fuel. And it would be burning and if you tried to brush it off, you just spread it and made it worse. But whatever it hit, it stuck to and burned. And that was the first fuel that they recommended that we used. It's paused right there. Mister Williams, and we'll be right back on veterans chronicles. "But when they took the height requirement off, that recruiter had hung on to those papers apparently of all of us who he had to turn down because in my community, we had a lot of Italian people, and our time people basically were very short people. Not very many tall people. So anyway, he came to the farm and looked me up and asked me if I still wanted to go on the Marine Corps and I said, yeah. Off I go. End up when I got a graduated boot camp, California. I learned for the first time. You're going to the South Pacific. I had no idea. Where I was going or what I was going to do when I got there. Where did you do boot camp and when was that? In May of 1943, we had 13 weeks of boot camp at that time. So we graduated actually in August of some time. And then I continued to train us. They first started training us how as a marine grant, how or infantry person, how do you work with tanks, they had a tank farm outside some place in California. And they sent us to that tank farm so that we could figure out how do you work with mechanized tanks. And we went through a period of that, then they put it in a regular infantry kind of a unit at camp Pendleton, and we did additional training and hiking there ten mile hikes in 20 mile hikes and all that stuff for conditioning. And then in December, early December, they'd love to support ship and send it to the South Pacific. And where exactly did this end you? I ended up the first place we went was an island called New Caledonia. And it was a they told me, owned by the French..

"I'm Greg Columbus. Our guest this week on veterans chronicles is Herschel woody Williams. He's the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima. And sir, thank you very much for your time today. It's good to be here. Sure is. Where were you born and raised? I was born in a little town called quiet Dell. Marin county, West Virginia. Near the city of Fairmont, West Virginia. So in the Marine Corps, my home of record was Fairmont because I've plotted and have a post office or anything else. It was a country community. And most of the people who lived there either were farm people or coal mine people. And which was your family. We were dairy farm people. Yes, we had a dairy farm from the time I was a little taught. When did you join the service? How old were you? I tried to join when I was 17. When Pearl Harbor was hit, I was in what was known in those days as the civilian conservation corps. We called it three sheets. I had joined it at 16. You could go in to seas at 16, and I had joined because I had a brother who had joined before me, and he was stationed in West Virginia at a CCC camp. And I thought I would go there where he was, because part I knew they only had one camp in the whole state, and but when I joined, I found out I was going to Morgantown, West Virginia, another camp, therefore a short time, and then everybody in that camp or about one or 260 officer or something like that. They loaded us on trains and took us all the way to Montana. So I was in the seas and Montana when Pearl Harbor was bombed. And the three seas were run by the army. They had an officer who was in charge of the camp, the head of first sergeant and the sergeant and their employees were army people. But all the rest of us were civilians. And we had a yearly contract that you could renew every year if you wanted to renew. About the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked, they called us all out, and we could get into some kind of a formation. We were not very military, but they called us out and told us that America had been bombed. And that there's going to be a war. So they offered us an opportunity that if you wanted to go direct into the army and you were over 18 years of age, which mature a man, you could, in less than go straight into the army. If you were not 18, then you'd have to have parent consent. And or if you wanted to go into some other branch of service, then you can request your release from the species for that purpose. Well, I wanted to be a marine. I've been influenced by the marine trash blues back when I was 12, 13, 14 years old..

She be a news special report, a 22 year old man has been taken into custody in highland park Illinois just outside Chicago following today's deadly shooting at a July 4th parade. Subject was taken into custody without losing her job and is the police chief there. The man is identified as Bobby primo the third, 6 people were killed around 30 others injured as the gunman fired from a rooftop. This man was neither didn't stop it. D.C. police say the driver of a Silverado pickup truck was heading north on Minnesota avenue northeast approaching the intersection of nanny Holland burrows avenue when he suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness. And at the same time, 70 year old Michael Hawkins Randall of northeast was riding a bicycle west on nanny Helen Burroughs, struck by the pickup that Silverado continued across the eastbound and westbound lanes and struck 64 year old Charles Jackson of northeast D.C.. He was working in that fireworks stand, both men died at the scene. The driver of the truck and a passenger were taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.
