"We had the whole division ready to help back us up if we needed them. And so what started as an effort to find and target the North Vietnamese turned into an effort to protect a specific landing zone known as LZ x-ray, so explain what the plan was to protect that. We went in to find the enemy and it wasn't initially we didn't find them. And so once everybody got in, it was a Sunday morning on the 14th of November. They started in about ten 45 in the morning with big company. And our sister comes a company was the second unit in, and then C and D-Company. We had three rifle companies and the Delta company was our mortars in our machine gun platoon. They came in also. And so once everybody got in, big companies started out looking for the enemy. And one of the units I called lieutenant herrick, one of my OCS classmates was in charge of that and he saw some anime and he started trying to catch him. Getting away from the rest of his company. And that unit they called it the lost platoon. They weren't lost. They were just surrounded and outnumbered. And he was killed in action, his platoon sergeant was killed and many of his other sergeants were wounded and a young 85 named Ernie savage took over. And he put a ring of steel of artillery and mortar fire all around his position. And our mission throughout that day, we made two attempts to get up to him that day. Because big company was light one, one platoon, captain Nadal, our company commander sent me over and attached me to be company to make it a full company. And we made that first attempt, but we weren't successful. We're taking a lot of casualties and so we pulled back and our battalion commander lieutenant colonel Moore wanted to get up to him that night. It was starting to get late in the afternoon and we wanted to get up to him. So we made a second attempt with big company and a company side by side trying to get up there to him. We put artillery and mortar fire in front of our in front of our positions as we move forward, trying to get to him. Captain commander said, hey, they got their bayonets fixed. So he told all of us to fix bayonets. So we took the urban head off of our pistol belt and fixed our M 16 rifle with a bayonet. So we would be equal to the bad guys. So we started to make that second attempt to get up to him, but we were taking a lot of fire and still getting casualties. I didn't have an aid man, but one of my sergeants was innate. He was an innate man in Korea named sergeant. He was a staff sergeant Oliver. So he had two missions to take care of his squad and also to take care of the wounded. So he was a very busy guy. And but as we started up moving up, right in front of my position, there was and you think of Vietnam, it wasn't heavy jungle. It was elephant grass and trees and shrubs. And we weren't cutting through a heavy jungle like you think of in Vietnam. And we were pretty close to the Cambodian border about a few clicks away from the Cambodian border. We weren't permitted to go into the Cambodian border back then, later on, we did go in, but so again, everybody has

If you don't know them, they touch you probably most weeks, most days they're a big logistics firm's publicly traded company, 6.9 billion market cap XPO is the ticker 42,000 employees based in Greenwich, Connecticut. How about that? Green witch. Yeah, right? It's not how you pronounce it. All right, Mario, talk to us about this supply chain. You guys at XPO are in all parts of it. I think trucking, I think, you know, just logistics moving stuff around. Give us a sense of kind of how we got into this logistics supply chain nightmare if you will and kind of where are we in terms of getting shelves up out of it? Yeah, you got it first. Thanks. Thanks so much for having me on, guys. When we think about the overall supply chains and moving goods, it's a combination of having many people you have moving to go so much equipment you have to move the guns and versus what kind of demand you're seeing from customers. Not only in a post pandemic world, there was demand in terms of consumers buying more and more products getting moved in supply chains, coupled with less people and less equipment as well. So when you think about the chip shortage as an example of impacting, OEM is being able to produce trucks. And that combination of high demand and lower supply of capacity obviously impacted supply chains globally. By the way, has shipping has logistics been a problem in terms of had problems in terms of scarcity of vehicles. I mean, has that impacted your business as well? Yeah, that also finally capacity perspective the truck manufacturers, though OEMs were challenging in terms of them being able to produce a capacity which also impacted where we are now a lot of these things are starting to normalize. So what you're seeing is that you obviously have more people going back into the workforce. We are investing more capital in the business where effectively we have the company specific edge where we also produce our own trailers because the other form of equipment is traders and this year we're planning on doubling the production of trailers compared to last year by producing more traders so we can move more goods. But I'm sure I'm assuming that demand hasn't stabilized, right? You're still seeing massive demand. So the net has been mixed from customers overall. Some customers were seeing stronger demands from today and our less than truckload business. And that's the business that I run, we have seen for industrial customers strengthening demand in some cases where they are seeing more product flow into their supply chain where they can actually move more products for their customers, which leads to more shipping. And you have some customers where they're seeing softer demand and that obviously shipping less. But for us, we have a lot of sales momentum

Also, also, you're going to have to have AH, desire for nostalgia that we're bringing this show back s O. There's there's that there, There's there's that definitely and and you're gonna have to be okay with a show that's going to be wholly political in the guise of four women, you know, still wanted to talk about sex all day. Well, I mean, it's reality of life and friendship. Maybe they'll just focus on friendship. Yeah, I guess I'm just Yeah, That'll get the ratings. Entertainment Companies Express Solidarity With Black Lives Matter
"Log into your Netflix account and you will see a new category this week the black lives matter collection Amazon prime and HBO are also featuring black TV and film making at the same time HBO Max has pulled from its library the classic film gone with the wind until it can give audiences context on the movie on how it romanticizes slavery in the south during the civil war now all these entertainment companies and plenty more have expressed solidarity with black lives matter and they're highlighting a lot of good shows also some not so good shows for some guidance I want to bring in NPR's pop culture critic Linda Holmes Highlander hi and our TV critic Eric deggans Herrick Hey let's start with one movie that had shot to a lot of people's viewing here is it just the help from twenty eleven and then came this huge backlash Linda I'm gonna throw this to you first because I know you just wrote a column about the movie and and some of the problematic elements that prompted this backlash yeah the help is a film about black maids in Mississippi in nineteen sixty three but it sees their story very much through the eyes and the experiences of a young white woman played by Emma stone who decides to write a book about them and it's very much about her as the person who saves them and help them out that's a classic Hollywood trope of the white savior and you know file a Davis who plays able in one of the maids has talked about this herself and said she regrets doing the film because of that focus on the white character rather than on the maids huh to the point about problematic elements of of some of the show's Erica each item will be honest and say I grew up watching and loving gone with the wind I imagine there are a lot of people out there thinking of a TV show or film that they have loved and thinking there's actually some pretty problematic characters and storylines and there it is a critic how do you think about this one of the things I always recommend is paying attention to how characters of color are treated by the story line are they fully realized characters with their own goals with their own values or are they constantly sacrificing themselves in order to aid a white protagonist I think that Linda makes a great point in her column where she talks about how the black maids and they help are constantly risking their jobs and their lives to help this white protagonists who just wants to like write a book about them and and and the question is always you know what are black characters are characters of color are doing for themselves do they seem like a collection of stereotypes or do they seem like authentic people who may have flaws are they like there to move the story along what do they really have agency and finally with gone with the wind you know what idolizes the antebellum south and it idolizes the south that was enslaving black people you know what what is the story ultimately saying is good and what is it saying that's negative and does that really line up with your values as if you were you have to constantly ask yourself these things Linda to Eric's point about that we should be aware as we watch black characters on screen are they authentic characters are they fully realized characters what are some things you would recommend viewers look for well I what I want to say first that I think if you're a white person like I am who who is trying to kind of do better and understand better what you watch is always going to be just a compliment to whatever real work you're doing watching a movie is not enough of course and that's why in a lot of ways what I recommend to people and I hope people do it's just change persistently consistently durably change the mix of creative voices that you are listening to and that you are giving your eyeballs too and not only when they are specifically addressing race so you know watch makayla Cole's new HBO show which is called I may destroy you if you're looking for something that's new if you want to go a little older and a little more mellow one of my favorite romances as the two thousand found love in basketball it matters a lot just what you're putting into your own eyes as far as representations of people I think it can be really hard to undo repeated exposures to something with conscious explanations of it I I I would push back against one element of that and say that I do think that one reason why people may have felt more comfortable voting for a black man to be president is because we saw a black man as president on both the hit TV show twenty four and the popular movie deep impact and so I do think that what we allow characters of color to do in film and TV shows expands our idea of what we may accept people of color doing in real life Linda give us a recommendation or to Eric did you want to weigh in here what what would do you recommend that people watch if we are trying to

Dressed: The History of Fashion
Fashion at the Oscars, an Interview with Author Bronwyn Cosgrave
"Here to talk about the Academy Awards wisher just this past. Sunday right casts. Yes now I get to talk about all things red carpet I mean. This is arguably the Oscars arguably the most highly anticipated of all red carpets throughout the year. So you know we're here to talk about the Academy Awards and the Academy. Awards is the annual event of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which is an organization established by among others American Phil Magnet Louis. B. Mayer who was co founder of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios and it was founded in nineteen twenty seven and the academy originally had about thirty six members and that included quote unquote. Hollywood royalty like Douglas Fairbanks and his wife at the time. Mary Pickford and the Academy was really focused on promoting the Hollywood film industry at a time when it was not yet. The nationally internationally celebrated epicenter film production that it is today so the Academy Awards. Ceremony was instrumental in helping establish. The Hollywood film industry's reputation by celebrating. Its achievements across five branches so giving awards to producers actors directors writers and technicians and the First Academy Awards was held in Nineteen Twenty nine and unlike today it was not a broadcast event but was rather a ticketed private dinner that was attended by two hundred and seventy invited guests and this was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in L. A. Dismay will mark ninety one years since the Academy Awards debuted on May Sixteenth. Nineteen twenty nine and things. Well you could say that they've changed just a tad today. The Academy's membership has blossomed from thirty six members to somewhere close to a thousand and from its original five branches. It now has seventeen. Over twenty million people across the US tune into the Oscars each year and has really become one of the most highly anticipated televised award shows of the season and millions of us tune in just for the pre show. I would argue and we do that because we WanNa see our beloved movie. Stars walk the red carpet and why can only be described as high style? I mean so. Central is celebrity dress to the Oscars that the pre show is televised live so that viewers like April and I am Oliver Address. Listeners can get up close views of their favorite celebrities attires before they even take their seats so talk show hosts interviews stars about what they wear while others give a play by play in studio and you know on various platforms across the Internet. I know I shared all of my favorites on instagram. And the revelry all things Oscars fashion does not end here of course in the days and weeks that follow as in every year a ceremony and special edition magazines will be printed that are dedicated to this red carpet fashion and of course the Internet will be aflame with talk of the best and worst dressed. Cast we've come a long way from that very first private dinner in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine and this has sparked our curiosity about just winded. The Oscars become as much about fashion as film and I started to research this topic and kind of dive right in but it was not long after. I began Researching that I came across. Bronwyn Cost Grace Fabulous book made for each other fashion the Academy Awards and of course I reached out to her and I am pleased to say she is joining us here. Today Bronwyn welcomed addressed Bronwyn. It is such a pleasure to have you here today. Welcome dressed thank you cassidy. I'm a huge fan of dressed. So it's lovely to be with you. Thank you so much and I have to say that we're here today. Because you wrote this fabulous book and I'm sure you've done a lot of interviews about red carpet fashion because of it your made for each other fashion and the Academy Awards. It's such an incredible book. You have this Great Inc. A primary source materials quotes newspaper clippings. And then there use these vivid descriptions to bring these nights and events to light and I just want to read a little bit from what you wrote about for the First Academy Awards which not aired because this is pre television but may thirtieth nineteen twenty nine for instance you write. A corruption erupted on the stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. Outside the Roosevelt Hotel just before eight PM at two hundred and seventy film industry. Silent screen notable slipped from a convoy of luxury automobiles and into its cavernous event. Space the blossom room. The Academy's prominent guests included Mary. Pickford NORMA SHEARER engine starlets Marion Davies and Joan Crawford. Lean and tanned. These actress lovely looked as delicious as their sugars. Spun Party Vapor a Waxed Candy Replica a Cedric Gibbons Golden Academy Award Trophy. So it's really these details that transport the reader back in time to that moment. So thank you. You must have had a wonderful time researching and writing. This book will thank you. I actually did not have a wonderful because I understand that because you know it's really it's really kind of you to notice the intricacy that actually went in to the writing of this book. The book took me three years and every single day of that was almost every single. Damn it was really one solid year of writing to the homestretch but for about two years. I scoured honestly. The world for information about what women wore the Oscars and my book really is about women and what they went through to get dressed and the great thing is that I did discover you. Know the bulk of that material in Los Angeles at the Margaret Herrick Library which is an academy library and a lot of it had never really been looked at and I'm also went to visit the great designers I went to the Dior Archive and John. Galliano actually called the archive and said you know. Help Bronwyn with what she what. She needs whatever she needs. Giorgio Armani also took it really seriously and help me. His team really helped me. I was very very fortunate. There's a great trust. One of my favorite dresses in the book is what we shall. Yo War when she was nominated for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and that dress was created from millions of Swarovski Crystal in Hong Kong by a very gifted designer named Barney. Chang and I what I actually noticed in the process of researching this book and why it took so long was that I kind of discovered a paper trail of identifying dresses and actually looking at the designer a designer attached to address in a caption say and looking at that dress in thinking that does not look like the work of say Howard greer who was one of the early costume designers and not all of the names turned up in in indexes for example addresses. So I really had to look hard and not believe what I saw imprint and that is something that I really noticed with fashion. History is that there will be a sort of myth associated with something. Say A design. Then it's not always the case and you really need to read between the lines and and go back to the primary source material and then to contextualized that all you know and put it in right into this story. This really captivating story. Yeah it's not an easy feat but you did it beautifully. Thank you but oh the one thing I will say about. That is that the book does also revolve around a celebration every year. So that really anchored the book the actual ceremony. Where you know. That was Super Fun. I watched every Oscar ceremony. That had been telecast. That was the first thing that I did so every Oscar ceremony that had been televised. Say I think it was like Nineteen Fifty. Four certainly the mid fifties onwards and really got to work with that material. Which was the fun stuff? Actually

Human error far more dangerous than Artificial Intelligence
"A UN report reveals a quantum leap in the number of AI patents being filed around the world. It isn't the tank that we should be worried about but the way that we choose to use it. In fact, the the reality is quite the opposite. And just the way humans have biases machines AI. And I generally believe that the future of our world should not be designed by geeks. Like me it needs to be a combination of people from diverse backgrounds. So particular to this project in be started training young people from very diverse backgrounds, and they people who have more understanding of things that machines can't do like empathy emotional intelligence solving the right problems, and creating scalable solutions large scale impact, and we gave them the skills rather than the other way around which is let's teach everyone to code and Gazit souls short-term resource Gavin the industry, it's more about creating the human skills, enhancing them and using machines to augment humans human. Abilities. They found that the results were amazing in that. These young people were not interested in creating gets another app to connect you with the people knew, but they would be interested in creating war tangible, scalable solutions, for example. So the young people are building a companion for the elderly who live alone, another group of kids of build a solution to help create a personal tutor for children who don't have access to quality education in developing countries the same solutions for healthcare issues around domestic violence violence against women. And it was really a for me. It's it all came to reality in saw that nine out of ten times these young people want to create solutions that are somehow in in a way alliance to sustainable development goals without trumpeting them to do. So and a lesson learned from these experiences is that when there's a diverse group of people from. Various backgrounds and experiences when they actually get a flavor of the technology that not scared. They can actually see what it can do for the world, and you've gone through many examples of Herrick into good to the world. But that does seem to be generalized unease about technology. And this is not a particularly hopeful time. Many people think that the future is not going to be as good as the president of the past was rightly or wrongly. What do you think could be done to change that perception, I think the perception is is also somehow can somewhat connected to reality. On one hand. There's the issue that when a are technologies have been portrayed in popular culture, science fiction tanks to Hollywood it paints a very dark picture of it the Mba's. It is true that there is a risk of technology being used in in in a harmful way, negative or potential impact on automation and autumn. Mission on jobs. There's also a huge opportunity and to even if the biggest risk that buffets is not embracing this technology just for solving the right problems
