"And in particular, I would also like to thank Bruce Misamore a longtime supporter in front of the council who's my contact Bill Bill, and I've been in contact. I looked at my emails since two thousand fifteen is a very hard man to get a hold of for understandable reasons. I'm delighted to have him here. Tonight, his full bio, you can read his book, which a lot of you. I know already have or online, but just don't share the basics about them. Bill went to the Soviet Union with the former Soviet Union very soon after the collapse of the Soviet Union with all the wall in relatively short order became the largest foreign investor in Soviet Union and his Hermitage funds. Not just the most successful fund in Russian history and the successful foreign investment fund in world history. Hit starring rates who returns he was managing over four point five billion dollars in a huge variety of companies all across the Russian economy. But as lot of you might know, come two thousand five he started the problems of issues, and sadly, one of the big cases, they uncovered was a quarter billion dollar tax fraud case. And we'll talk about more night tonight. But his Lee tax attorney giving unlike is other people was not able to or did not get out of Russia and time, sadly, perhaps he was imprisoned for almost a year in horrible conditions under poor health, and essentially beaten and died and killed the Russians dispute that I I said it was a heart attack. And now they're blaming the Bill for it. For the Bill set up his killing. But after all that Bill changes his whole look on outlook on life. He went from being a huge investment banker and became an indirectly human rights activists. A lot of you've heard that may next the act routers, the architect and the driving force behind that him along with Senator John McCain and Senator harden that's the largest and most significant sanctions that have been put on Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union. "He's the CEO of Hermitage Capital who in response to Magnitsky's murder lobbied, congress US congress to pass the Magnitsky act to punish human rights violators. Obama signed it into law and twenty twelve and in response. Putin band US adoptions of Russian children Putin also put together group of anti Magnitsky act lobbyists which included vessel at scion. And she pitched her tail to folks like Dana Rohrabacher who just recently lost his bid for congress. And he even she even brought her Magnitsky file to that June two thousand sixteen Trump Tower meeting and she also worked for the team defending present holdings who in a strange plot. Twist hired a firm to dig up dirt on its enemies, which included Bill Browder, and that firm was fusion GPS. And that's the same firm that Republicans and then Democrats hired to get up research on Trump. Also, the same firm that hired Christopher Steele who wrote the dossier. And that's why I think Republicans wouldn't stop asking about prep on holdings and testimony from witnesses involved in this case because they were trying to discredit that dossier. So this week vessel guy was indicted for obstructing Justice in the civil forfeiture case for the money laundering scheme, and she's charged with coordinating response with Kremlin officials to whitewash document filed with the court about. Prevot on holdings, and she got caught. So joining us today to discuss the indictment of veselnitskaya is the CEO of Hermitage Capital the architect of the global Magnitsky act and the author of red notice, please welcome Bill Browder Bill. Thanks for joining us on Muller. She wrote a great to be here. So I I know it's hard to sum up. But is that the story in a nutshell, did I miss any glaring obvious things that should be brought to light. Well, I'm actually working on my next book. And and it's going to be about four hundred pages to discuss that. So for you to be able to do that in three minutes is a big accomplishment. Thank you. It was really difficult. I remember watching your testimony July twenty seventeen and listening to the chilling story of of the capture and murder of Magnitsky. So yeah, it was tough to sum up there. But I did want to get your top line reaction this week on the indictment of vessel sky. Well, I I was delighted to see it. The tally vessel. Knits guy is a person who pushed every boundary and pushed beyond what was legal in many places in order to do the Kremlin's bidding. And and we saw her cheating in the US case in which the US department of Justice was prosecuting her client presume, and she was cheating. And this is where it gets interesting is that in order for the US prosecute prep resume. They wanted to get documents through what's called a mutual legal assistance request from the Russian government. And so the United States government asked the Russian government for documents to prove the case. And what happened then was that the tally of vessels sky, effectively goes into the office of the Russian government where where she's agent of the Russian government. Instead of the Russian government replying to the department of Justice, the tally vessel midst guy replies. To the department of Justice. And she says we're not going to give you those documents. And then she makes a fake story about how me and Sergei were the ones that did the crime that her client was accused of and what makes the story. So fascinating is that the US department of Justice got hold of her emails and got hold of documents of word documents with properties in track changes that show that she was the one editing documents replying from the Russian government, the US government. And so she got caught red-handed, and it's it's it's very satisfying to watch her again indicted and into watch her squirm, and and and make all these crazy comments after being indicted by the US government. Yeah. Exactly. And it does actually give a proof that she is connected to the Kremlin pretty strongly. And I also wanted to ask you, do you know of any of the Prevot on real estate deal. In New York were in any way connected to Trump or anyone in his family like Kushner? Well, there's a sort of they're sort of connected in very obtuse way. The the only way I can say they're connected is that presumed bought a bunch of properties from a company called ASI..

"And it reminded me why sometimes people like me have to take conscious measures to step into the stillness and silence and be reminded of how it washes us clean. Really? What was that the same? Benedict in Hermitage that you go to now that you spend time out every year. Absolutely. So I've been going for twenty four years, I've stayed there more than seventy times, and I really think that's my secret home and in a world of change, and sometimes impermanent that along with my wife, and my mother really the still point of my world, and wherever I'm traveling in the world, I have the image of that little room with the Pacific below it in my head and the chapel there too. And I feel that really studies and grounds me in the way, I need in the world of tumult. And I think that's such an important point because as you pursued that place of stillness that you found both physically and inside yourself. You know, it seems to me you've you've held that in a creative tension with moving back out into the world. And and with movement, here's something beautiful. You wrote that the point of gathering stillness is not to enrich the sanctuary or the mountain. Top. But to bring that calm into the motion the commotion of the world. We haven't used the word spirituality yet. You make the same connection when you write explicitly about, spirituality. I mean, you know, that it arises out of the disjunction between us and the transcendent. I mean, spirituality is in is in some kind of tension with stillness, right? That in fact, this is the place where we where we meet our demons as well. I feel like that's there. And you're writing the s beautiful. I absolutely agree with that. I think sometimes mystery is a word I use as an equivalent to spirituality. But you're right. I think our relation with the divine is a love affair, and it's a passionate love affair. And it's also too much use as any affair that. We have in the world with somebody. We care about a lot. And so it's not all sweetness enlighten. Probably shouldn't be because the sufferings and the demons often what instructs us much more than the com- radiant moments. And so I love people like Thomas Merton because half the time he's in his Hermitage. He's shaping against it. He's knocking against the walls. He's longing to be out in the world. And he's honest enough to say that that as you said the the electricity comes in the tension. And that there's there's no sense of. Light without darkness without a dark night of the soul. I once spent some time in Iceland in the middle of the summer when the sun doesn't set for ninety days on night. So it's it's always light out. And it was very disorienting. I lost all sense of when to eat twin to sleep when to dream, and it.

"Power of these tech companies. Now you bring up the fact that they're becoming a media company. And of course we had AT and t. Time Warner merger which included CNN and of what the judge said in his ruling was looking at the outsized power of these companies in the digital advertising space. You see that response, but is regulation. The right strategy are finds the right strategy is any of that going to make a difference when you consider how large the market capitalization of these four or five companies are. So when you have a company like Google with one hundred billion dollars in cash and you find five billion dollars, what you're actively telling Google to do is to continue to break the law. If you had a parking meter in front of your house, that cost one hundred dollars an hour, but the ticket was twenty five cents. You would continue to break the law and that's what we've been telling these companies to do with fines. That might sound large dollar terms, but in terms of impact aren't that large, you ask what we should do. I believe regulation has unintended consequences. I think GDP are has actually emboli. And strengthen these companies position. I believe that the future to oxygen eight, the marketplace is to break these guys up. I think antitrust action is the way to go that there is a real risk of that. Now, I know that the US attorney general Jeff Sessions having a meeting with states attorneys generals next week to discuss this very topic restarting to hear that word, antitrust rebates starting to hear the word monopoly associated with some of these companies. Is that a growing regulatory risk for these mega tech companies? Could you actually see them getting broken up? I used to think there was no way because Amazon is eighty eight fulltime lobbyists in DC. We in the US I would say suffer a little bit from what I call this gross idolatry of innovators and billionaires. We see them as our heroes, but I do think there is a movement of foot now, whether it happens out of DC, I would say most likely, no. I think the pushback is gonna come out of Brussels and possibly a red state. We're an attorney general in that state's he's at the brightest blue line path. The governor's mansion is to make an argument against these tech. Companies to quite frankly probably haven't been good. Have they been going for California? Yes, New York s? Has it been good for Kansas? What's happened to the ad agencies? The retailers, the businesses in those states. I think a lot of these red states have decided, you know, big tech it. We've been net losers here, so I don't think it's going to come out at DC at might the DOJ should absolutely do its job. The call to restrain. The acquisition of this company was read in comparison to the power of these other companies. So I actually do believe there's there is a non zero probability now that the DOJ or the FTC or a state AG Michael after these companies and accused him of anticompetitive behavior and propose antitrust and breaking up as a solution. It's an interesting paradox because you have Amazon yet to announce the second location for its headquarters, and you have, you know, local mayors and governors of morning Amazon at the same time. You see it coming under increasing potential enemy trust scrutiny and other bad headlines following it as well. Do you. You see public opinion changing at all toward the power of these big tough tech companies. While at the same time, we're also dependent on the warm is absolutely turned two years ago. The only argument was is more Christ. Like we're going to be the next president among their see is really the weaponization of the Facebook platform by the GRU of the Russian government changed everything. And now. Oh, citizens. Citizens have are starting to feel a lot more wary about these firms, but you brought up an interesting point the competition to be the host of the next age. Q. and regulation are linked Stephanie because the next headquarters for Amazon will be Washington DC, the metro area, and the reason why, and it was always going to be DC is one the basis have a home there, and CEO gets to pick with a company. Second headquarters are going to be. And so the only thing standing in between Amazon, Amazon's valuation of one trillion in two trillion is regulation, and no one is going to regulate the individual. The throws out the first pitch at the two thousand nineteen opening game of the Washington nationals which will be Jeff Bezos. This competition was a Reuss to transfer wealth from fire departments and school departments to this shareholders of Amazon. It was always going to be DC. This has been a terrible abuse of the Commonwealth. And how many lobbyists does Amazon have in DC right now. Last check Eighty-eight fulltime lobbyists in DC, Scott Galloway. We're gonna have to see if you're right on that. It's going to be embarrassing of announce big Indianapolis. Well, DC could certainly use the jobs, Scott. Thank you so much. Thank you. Let's turn to Europe and the massive money laundering case that shaking the financial world is he? Oh, of Dansk of Bank is out a new report from the firm details. "I think Browder at least as an individual has has taken on this pretty unique, outsized role in US, rushing relations over the years and causes that he's championed like the Magnitsky act and in general, kind of framing of Putin's, Russia as a malevolent kleptocracy have really taken hold and influence the way. I think a lot of people see Russia, but that's kind of Browder to point out and Browder. One point zero was a very ambitious brash smart investor fund manager and showed up in Moscow and set up his own hedge fund Hermitage Capital in the mid nineteen nineties and did very, very well for himself is the boom years in the immediate close Soviet Russian economy was also a time of, let's say, bending, or at least a push. Shing the rules. You know, the Russian market had essentially been created from scratch in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union. And there were a lot of people inventing the roles as they went or trying to push the rules as far as they can go. And Browder was one of them very much in vogue with the times in trying to maximize returns for himself and his investors through practices that some people at the time or later would say, you know, skirted sort of the the edge of the allowable. So how does that you know, Browder who's profiting and the sort of chaos of post-soviet Russia turn into this big human rights advocate. The broader of today in that first period Browder was very much a champion of Putin's and thought that he was a welcome change from Boris Yeltsin who Browder thought had allowed the oligarchy to essentially take over the country and run it to ruin for their own profit. And then a couple years later in two thousand seven while Browder. Was out of the country. He was in Paris at the time. His offices in Moscow were rated. They were raided by the police who claimed they were looking into some the case about a tax violation at the time. Routers companies weren't in arrears, and there wasn't an open investigation. So as a bit of a curious raid and what happened next is a pretty complicated tale, but the police in coordination with corrupt officials in the tax service and other your credit conferences in Russia committed a complicated tax fraud. Essentially, one of the people who was involved in tracking or investigating the way the Russian authorities did. That was a man named Sergei Magnitsky after he gave testimony about the nature of this scheme was arrested and charged with affectively aiding tax evasion. He was held in jail for almost a year in. Very foul torturous conditions. His health grew poor and in November two thousand nine key ultimately died, and it was Magnitsky's death in jail that really transformed Browder and gave him a new passion, new crusade and led him to this lobbying campaign that started in the United States in Washington and pushing for the Magnitsky act and then onward to countries in Europe and around the world pushing for Magnitsky style act, which call for sanctions, visa, bans, and asset freezes against those involved in Magnitsky's case in his death and in the tax fraud. And why is Putin. So focused on the Magnitsky act. There's a lot of laws passed a lot of protests in human rights terms will what about these sanctions in particular that broaders helped create apparently on earth to president of Russia. It's an interesting question because we don't fully. No, the answer even six years later, you know, one, I think pretty sensible informed guests. I got for the purposes of my article came from an Obama top involve Obama adviser on Russia, Celeste Walter, and she described it in terms of a Russian term that kind of comes from Russian criminal jargon. And she said that effectively, the Magnitsky act means that Putin's quote Krisha doesn't work, and could he show is this slang term that means roof. But what it means in this context is the kind of protection that a powerful figure can offer those lower down in the system. So you know, Putin's quote, social contract with those inside the system is screwed up. He can't offer protection and immunity to police officials, judicial officials security officers. All the people in all the rungs of the Putin system that he needs. To carry out his orders and ensure his political power and survival. And that's, I think, one reason why he's so upset..
