"Concerning as the positive cases have shot up over the past week. In fact, Corona virus cases in Colorado have reached their highest levels since July. We get into the Why behind those numbers with state epidemiologist Dr Rachel Herlihy. Good morning. Good morning. Thank you for having first off how much of a jump of you seen in the past week. We have seen about a 50% increase this week compared to last week, you know? The level of increase that we saw right around the following the Fourth of July holiday. Okay, That makes me wonder. Is this because of Labor Day? Yeah, That's exactly the question we're asking to. We think that because a part of the story, but we know that there's a lot more happening image that just that right now in the state, and in particular we are seeing and even more significant increase No more in the 70% range. If you look at cases among 18 to 25 year old What about school age kids, so maybe younger than 18 simply because Is back in session. Are you seeing more of those cases? We actually across the state are seeing an increase in all age groups right now, though, including in school age Children have hospitalizations gone up. We know that hospitalizations can lag behind case count, but we actually are just now starting to see our first indications that hospitalizations could be Checking up slightly in the state. Do you think that they haven't spiked as well? Because we're talking about younger people who aren't typically maybe hit us hard with symptoms is older people are. Yeah, I think the fact is, I think that you're absolutely right. We know that younger age groups are less likely to be hospitalized due to Kobe 19. It certainly happens. But in the DC higher hospitalization rates among older population with what we're seeing, Is it safe to have in person learning? Do you think especially in a college setting? You know, I think A college and university studying is different, and it's really important for those colleges and universities to be working with the local public health agencies to understand what the level of disease transmission and their community might be. You know, we know that there are certain campuses in the state where we're seeing widespread transmission. But there are other campuses across the state where we've seen relatively few cases, so I think it really depends on the given circumstances. For months. We've been talking about the second wave that will come in the fall. Tell us sort of your concerns about the flu season ahead and the cold months ahead. Yes, So certainly Some concerns that come along with the upcoming fall and winter season is that we do know that we are individuals will be moving indoors and it's really important that we keep those social distancing practices that we've had in place working in the state. We know it's going to be harder. When there's less ability to spread out and be outdoors for extended periods of time, But I think it's really going to be critical that social distancing and that compliance continue this all you know, there's the potential of ahh Grammy right with influenza, Stephen and Really the right time to be getting that influenza vaccine is now to make sure that individuals in the state are Repaired. Their musicians have enough time to respond to the vaccine before influenza right there could be a triple whammy. Really, when you consider the fatigue that people have right now with this pandemic. How's your office trying to cut through that? That feeling that we all have after dealing with? You know these protocols for six months? Yeah, This is really tough and then really challenging for all age groups and you know I have a school aged child and I know it's been really hard on her toe have limited contact with her. Friend. It's really tough for everyone right now, and I think you know, we just really need to double down on our efforts and make sure that we're practicing social distancing that we're married Naft and terrible. Add that there's still so much that we are learning about this virus. There's a lot of emerging scientific literature about potential long term impact of this. Infection on people, So we know it's not just, you know, an acute illness that revolves in a week or two, and then you're good to go. We know that there are going to be long term consequences for some people, and so really suppressing the epidemic. As much as we can in the state is really our best strategy to protect individuals in the long run. We don't yet know when a vaccine will come out and be able to be distributed. But just Colorado have a plan for distribution of that vaccine. And if so, what is it? We're working closely with the federal government. And then with state stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan for Colorado. We do anticipate that there will be federal guidance on how to prioritize use of that scene. We know that the initial surprise the vaccine will be limited and that we will no need to prioritize who received the vaccine, and some of the groups better are being identified are certainly going to be health care workers who really we need to be protected also first responders, so it's going to be a challenging situation. But our goal is really to be Repaired when the vaccine arrived even effect as early as the end of this year. Were working very diligently to really next year. We have the capacity and place to be a state epidemiologist, Dr Rachel Herlihy. Thanks so much for the update. I appreciate the time. Thank you so much. Well, precautions will be in place. "Lives. So Dr Rachel. Herlihy said, it's an unfortunate. But in Puerto reminder of the importance of two doses of influence vaccine for young children who are receiving influence a vaccine for the first time if you've already had the flu shot before previous years, you only get one shot each year. And again, I'll go through what the CDC recommends so hairline. He says the child at the H one n one strain, which is the predominant strain this year. Which is why we don't think it's going to be as vicious of flu season as last year, whose predominant strain was h three n two this year. It's h one n one of the more predominant straight still kill you. So Selena win is a seven year old and went into a coma. And she is currently battling the fluid children's hospital, Colorado. And we are right now in peak flu season doctors are so recommending getting the flu vaccine because they could you know, give you some protection as early as two weeks from now. But what kills you with their Monja with with the flu getting ammonia or other breathing difficulties? So we have a child who did get the flu vaccine, but it wasn't enough. The child who died was under vaccinated. So what is the CDC recommending? So this is something that a lot of people have not gotten the memo on. So. Children under six months can't get the vaccine try to keep your babies away from the flu. But if they're over six months, they should get the flu shot. That's what's been recommend anybody six months or older. You cannot get the nasal spray until you're two years old. So that's got a six-month-old seven-month-old, you give them the flu shot. Now. They say children that are six months to eight years old cleft previously received two or more doses of any flu vaccine in their past. So I don't see how a six-month-old would if you can't really vaccinate till six months. They if they've already had two doses. You only need to get one a year. However. Anybody who only received one dose or never received the flu shot needs to Joseph four weeks apart? So if you've never given your kindergartner the flu shot, and you go in and get the kid the flu shot you need to one month later, go back and get that second booster. Why because the first dose primesee immune system gets ready. And then the second dose provides protection, they say children are only get that. One dose can have reduced protection. Now, how many of you guys were aware that had to do the two shots? We've been talking about getting the flu shot every year. But we have to additionally say don't forget you need to get the double. If this is the first time, you're getting the flu shot of your first time, your kid got the flu shot or if they've only had one shop before they need to. So now going back to anti vaccine. Don't underestimate the number of people that are anti vaccines. There's a lot out there. In october. The agency released a report that an estimated one hundred thousand young children have not received a vaccination against any of the fourteen diseases for which the shots were recommended. Most young children's seventy percent had all their shots. But that's still not everybody. Now, the CDC researchers did not ask why parents didn't get their children vaccinated some said it was health insurance. But you see a lot of government programs pay for shots.
