"Richard eat your host today. Our guest is sculptor and community member uphill walkie. Pueblo, Jorge Rivera and also part of the lightning boy foundation, so Georgia you you kind of caught the bug in in high school. Looking art class got your fingers around some clay decided well, this is going to be what I'm going to do after high school. Where did you study? I went to the institute of American Indian arts here in Santa Fe, which was on the old college of Santa Fe campus at that time. Part of it was on the old Santa Fe Indian school campus. And that was an amazing experience to to go from the small Pueblo Apu walkie into Santa Fe, and you know, it's pretty much the same New, Mexico culture. But then we went to the tune of American Indian arts there was, you know, over fifty tribes represented in my classes, and it was it was the best thing that could happen to me, it opened my eyes to the rest of the world of native culture. And so I had friends in all the way from Alaska to the to the east coast in New York, you know, so. It was. Is really kind of set the tone for what my art would become and I learned a lot from those individuals who weren't necessarily searching for a style or searching for too much. They were like brought up doing there are in a certain cultural way, and then they were doing it. And so. After that. I went to California college of arts and crafts in Oakland. And some of some some of us from the institute went together as the so there was three of us that went out there as a group, and it turned out to be really, well, I ended up getting my bachelor's degree there in ceramics and drawing, but inbetween finishing at California. I went to an art school called Lacoste school of our in Provence, the south of France and then talk about eye-opening. Yeah. So there I was you know, with a few hundred bucks in my pocket and a backpack, and I just hit the road. And my first stop was New York, and I hit all the museums. That are could there then went on to Peres and then travel down to the south of France and ended up going back and working for the school there for another couple of years and got exposed to all the museums there on the western part of Europe. And so went, you know from England. Down into France and went into Spain went into Italy in down into Sicily over those two and a half years and just focused on our and produce a lot of our and was fortunate to even get a second job. I worked for the school. Then I got a second job working for a Japanese master in monumental stone projects. So I was doing that. When I was twenty three years old. Were you chose lean were you carving, or you just chiseling apprentice who got to sit that stone up and then stand back Ono, no hands on. I mean, we I learned a lot from his name was Yasu as we I learned a lot from him because I hadn't. In in you're going to art school. You're basically learning the basics but by working for him. I learned from. You know, one of the best in the world. He was doing monumental sculptures for the Olympics and Pan Am games. And, you know, just massive pieces that you know, I got to be a small part of that for a while. So I guess Georgia various sculptor here in northern New Mexico. Former governor Pataki Pueblo and founder of long with leashes wife of the lightning boy foundation in honor of their son who passed away eight years old Valentino will you carving, then I was gonna ask you. I wasn't aware of of this part of your history Georgia about this carving in stone, we carving things that were not native American not culturally your foundation. Yeah. I was or producing really experimenting with all, you know, looking at some of the modern abstract sculptures, and and I was producing abstract pieces, you know, pretty much based on like, the French sculptor named John Arp. Right. A little bit of Picasso style. Stuff. Henry Moore Henry Moore, you know, some of those elegant smooth shape that look like figures or something, but they're just abstract. And so I did that for a while. And then I had this dream while I was out there in the south of France about. A buffalo or bison that were had taken the shape of. Of a human was engaging with me, and I won't bore you with the whole dream. But that then became my new subject, and I was hooked on doing Buffalo's and buffalo is look like miniature cars, and I went through a whole series of those and once in a while, I'll still draw them as the character. It's kind of like doing a self portrait. Right. Yeah. The transition from clay to stone to modern art to more back to to your culture that you more familiar with. Became very very large figures. I would imagine most people if they've been around northern New Mexico for any period of time been to buffalo, thunder senior gigantic pieces around buffalo, thunder, most of those are human representations nave men representations in animals, correct? Yeah. When I came back from Europe and eighty seven my concentrated on developing the post center, which is the cultural center at poa K. And so I studied a lot of the archaeological sites in the southwest. And then went to every Dan so that could possibly go to within the pueblos and the buffalo dances one. That is not only just done here in the south west. It's it's done all over the country. And and it's really a dynamic dance and ceremony that I wanted to portray because I think it represents there's no question that's a native American. And so he. The twelve foot one that's in front of buffalo. Thunder also exists. The second copy is in front of the Smithsonian. India museum in DC. And so it's always like a source of pride that when people see that they want to take a picture with it because it represents it's like a native American icon that everybody understands as being generally native American Pueblo and those who are in bronze those are in bronze. You still do stonework at all. I haven't done a stonework in a few years. The last piece I did was an abstract marble piece that's stands about six feet tall. And it's it's a really again going back to that same style that I used to do then I wanted more abstract. Yeah. Wanted to refresh my abstract imagery, and I had I really haven't carved a large marble piece in a long time. So I did one in marble screen marble with a pink Portuguese marble base. But yeah, you know, my images that I that I wanted to produce needed. To be done. In bronze in order for me to get arms in the air and horses kicking up in the air and buffaloes running needed more than what I could get in stone. So do you have a website, George for George and then a website for lightning, boys? Well, yeah. George tree Veira studio dot com is my website, and then lightning boy foundation dot com. All right. We'll take a break here. You're listening to coughing culture. George Rivera's our guest, I am Richard es. And then we'll bring it up to modern day. And we'll bring it more back to the bronze and what he's doing today. Not just for lightning boy foundation. But also other art that he's producing you're listening to coughing culture.

"Well as you've probably read oxytocin levels spike in a mother's bringing after she gives birth but studies from nyu show that this actually affects the way the brain processes and interprets auditory signals and will make them much more sensitive to a baby's cries that's pretty fascinating so does oxytocin give you like super hearing if you inject some into a male as well you know i'm not sure about that but the scientists did inject the oxytocin into virgin mice and they saw their mothering instincts kick in not only did they respond quickly to baby my squeals but they had an urge to help them often carrying them to their nest on their backs while i like that and let's move off science for his hand and talk about mother's day itself now you might know that mother's day was launched in america at least by anna jarvis and you might have also heard that by the end of her life she hated mother's day and had turned against it but i didn't remember the details about this so here if you them basically anna's mom and was a civil warners and she cared for soldiers on boats sides of divide and jeevan tried to orchestrate this peace day between moms of soldiers it was called mother's friendship day and so it was supposed to unite people from the union and confederate side but when she passed and i was struck by the number of cards and notes she got about her mom and she actually decided to celebrate her mom and all moms by creating a day for them mother's day but what's interesting is sort of the derision she got from senators and all this pushback and this is according to jonathan mullenix is research but one colorado senator this guy named henry moore teller he called the day puerile absolutely absurd any declared everyday with me as a mother's day so you buy this and then he actually had support from this new hampshire senator who was also insulted by the day and he complained as though the memory of my late mother could only be kept green by some outward demonstration on sunday may tenth couldn't this i mean obviously there was a lot of resistance so how did she make mother's day.

"I think that there is a better team right now because i am not impressed with how the raiders plane at all i that's an interesting interesting take kazumi raiders look like a broken team ray it look at all or about the raiders looking poor than in your mind than the chargers looking good because they they didn't really do a lot to to impress against the giants in that game either the chargers problem is their run defence i could get behind almost everything else with this team if you told me you know you got mike williams the rookie coming in this week and they're they're starting to use hunter henry moore and we'd antonio gates out in that's helping the offense melvin gordon's coming off his best week of the here i i could be convinced that the charges offense is about to take on i mean as any team having going in what we thought they'd be and what they are the worst season than the raiders i mean amari coopers vanished there's whispers that there's issues potentially between the owner and the head coach right now that you know his job has been questioned at one point that seems crazy to me after what happened last season and the contract that he got a contract marche on lynch's brought in its it's a nice offseason narrative i think wash lynch's ran well in places but there are ground game is is suspect their defense is suspect there there's yeah their defense there's no reason in particular to expect them to do anything and their back seven their linebackers there they're secondary all struggles but river filbert has not shown right now that he's able to take advantage of bad defense they are missing layups all the time they're having delays of game it's just a death hasn't been the charges offense one more note that game boys the wildfires that have.
