Every Friday villains focuses on a different real or fictional bad guy for fictional villains we'll discuss the social influences that led to the character's creation for real villains we'll tell the true story the dunk deeds and explain what drove them to evil you'll hear episodes on characters like Don Vito Corleone and no country for old men's and on sugar as well as real life villains like the iceman Richard Kuklinski and the Co ed killer Ed Kemper along the way we'll highlight the psychological political and emotional factors that spawned both real and fictional villains give it a listen and follow villains for free on sputtered. bye and any way you listen to podcasts thank you now back to the story by sixteen ten British explorer Henry Hudson had embarked on three voyages to find a northern passage to Asia via the water there's north of Russia while none of these missions were technically successful he had a strong track record of finding valuable resources and reliably expanding abrogation data for new regions and now Hudson had a new idea what if they looked for a northwest passage instead of North Eastern one so in sixteen ten the British east India Company and the Muscovite Company joined together to back him for a new exploration attempt and they provided him with the ship called the discovery which had a surprising history of its own it was one of three vessels used to found Jamestown in sixteen o seven and had been previously employed by John Smith himself the failure of both Jamestown and the mission to find the in West passage has led some people to believe the discovery was cursed whether or not that was actually true the discovery was a solid seafaring ship this thirty eight foot bode was particularly popular for exploration because it could handle the open seas as well as the shallow waters of bays and rivers it was equipped with both oars and sails and stored supplies board style preventing it from sinking too low in the water the boat didn't have a hull the crew could retreat to and was not equipped for harsh winter conditions. It was a summer shipp but that shouldn't have been a problem. Tom Given the journey was only supposed to last through the summer but the journey did not go off as planned what follows is the trajectory of the trip as best as we can determine from the testimony of the sailors who made it home to England because we still don't know Hudson's fate we can only APOTHECARY is based on the surviving account in April of sixteen ten Henry Hudson set sail from London with a twenty two man crew which included his teenage son and his old colleague Robert Jewett as the trip began spirits were high although Hudson's record of success was stellar he was known as good captain who was kind to his crew the funding was in place the heading seemed solid everyone was banking on a successful trip however as the crew progressed past greenland into what's now called Canada's Hudson Strait tensions Dan to mount sometime in August four months after setting off from England the crew discovered that the straight gave way to what is now known ask the Hudson Bay there was no passage through the journey it seemed had been for nothing and the crew began to feel the state of disappointment adding to the frustration was the fact that Hudson was oddly evasive withholding plans from the crew and refusing to answer questions some began to suspect he was hiding something or that the expedition had other motives worse the ice was creeping in and supplies were beginning to dwindle Hudson who had been responsible and communicative on prior expeditions drove his crew on without an explanation only to reach a dead end.

"They set sail once again. The objective was a short route out to asia and this time hudson didn't have to play any games with his backers he had convinced smith and digs that america was the back door to asia. He believed his problem on the last voyage which was that he had not gone far enough. In finding the channel and this time he sailed straight across the atlantic things went smoothly at first though there was grumbling among the crew through when they stopped to pick up a surprise crewman named henry green the others immediately found him suspect he was an infamous gambler near dwell but it appeared that he was a good a friend of hudson's. The captain seemed wanted to have someone he trusted at his side. In may they put into port at iceland to fish shoot birds and bathe in the natural literal hot springs but while they're green the newcomer got into a bloody fight with the ship's surgeon hudson took greenside. The others in the crew didn't like us in june. After skirting south of greenland they reached a region appropriately called the furious over fall a vast stretch of water nearly five hundred miles long and lined with mountains of ice it led into a mammoth inland sea at the northern reaches of canada which would later be called hudson bay the over fall was thick with ice chunks and its current swirled like a vast treacherous whirlpool hemming nodal craft in hudson and crew became trapped in the ice and desperation swept the deck of a little ship the fact that hudson had steered them straight into a death trap set the men against him. They began whispering to each other bowing mutiny. If ever they got out <music> but when the discovery finally broke free of the ice talk of rebellion die down it was august before temperatures were warm enough for them to reach hudson bay day and when they did hudson was delighted he believed that the passage to asia could be located on the western shore assailed across the frigid expanse of the bay and made their way to a neck back of water at its southern end called james bay and here though it was only september they once again became launched an ice nerves quickly became frayed as the realization illustration dawn on the men that they weren't going anywhere they would have to find a way to survive the winter in the limitless canadian wasteland robert jewett who had served hudson the longest turned on him openly he jeered at the captain for having bragged that they would not only discover the northwest passage but being the spy silence of asia by early february hudson became enrage at ju.
