This Land Is Whose Land?
"Simon winchester joins us now from the berkshires. His latest book is called land. How the hunger for ownership shaped the modern world simon. So good to have you here. Well lovely to be a thank. You bye here. We mean of course a little bit far. The last time i think you were on this podcast it was in person but perhaps it is fitting that you are on your own piece of land for this conversation. How'd you come to want to write a book about land and land ownership by used to live in hong kong and came back in ninety seven had passed back into the hands of chinese coast. Should have done then decided largely on the advice of old enough. See then new york times correspondent in hong kong. That i should perhaps move to new england and so rather than go to london. I came to the new world. I'd be correspondent here in the seventies the eighties for the guardian and bought a little cottage town code west. Saic about one hundred ten miles. North of new york in duchess county has had few acres of garden and stuff around it but there was a a plumber from the bronx code. Caesar luria who owned a fairly tracts surrounding the house needs to come there and hunt and he was very nice man and he would off to hunting each season he would leave me a cooler with venison doorways a bottle of cognac which was particularly nice then after three or four years. He said to me that he was tired of paying the taxes on this land would i like to buy it and he named price and mice but guess why not okay so i bought the land and it was pretty useless. I have to say smith scale the north face of mountainside so. It wasn't good for raising animals. Now this fake fantasy. But one day i might but it was sort of beautiful in were couple of little streams lots of trees some of them quite magnificent they oak and hickory and of course north florida pine cherry and ash of animals. We bob cat. Once there were dare of course apply. Gm rabbits and i liked it but it was not particularly useful and eventually with this sort of fantasy. I had maybe one day. Having animals i came up here to the batches. I so that sam the house done death but kept the land and then there was this sort of major shift in my attitude towards it. When in twenty eleven i became a citizen of this country. Suddenly i realized the by owning these one hundred and thirty acres down in duchess county. I was actually invested in the country. To which is not become a citizen so then became rather interested more interested in the land itself and in history so i started digging around realized overstated. I aborted from this mr aaron. He had deep fried to that body from someone else and so the chain went back until it stopped in about the late seventeenth century. There was paperwork all the way back to then. Then i know strode duchess county in poughkeepsie. They've got all the papers but then he came to a shuddering halt because it was at that time that the documents were mainly written in dutch. Where henry hudson's explores who had come up the river. That is his name but he was working there. Being for instance she was working as an agent for the dutch. And he had first acquired land from the original settlers by non who were the mckeekan indians. But they didn't have the concept of ownership say hunted and they gathered and they settled and all the rest of it superintendent but didn't own and then i began to think well the difference between their attitude land. They're feeling was that you can never own land than you could. Own the breeze with the ocean. To maya too is. This is mind. Shoo everybody away. You start at the right to do so. That was an interesting development. And i thought maybe there would be a book and so i put it to my editor and she said yes. That would be an admirable idea. But don't keep the united states only have a look at where this originated and how it's because around the world and so that was not traveling and wondering about oh beginning in duchess county.

"Or ge. Hello. You're on Koch at Ojai. Guys. My name is Tad. Hey, what can we do for you? Well, when I drive late at night, my car, it seems tto wander. Okay, unexpected. The veers off the road and on his shoulder with no warning, And sometimes it creeps up with other cars as if the role is sticking. Sometimes the car will suddenly get this really loud Dad does. This usually happens after Long day. Now that you mention it, it does. There's nothing wrong with your car. It's you, Ted. You're a tad tired. The reason you're Kara's weaving is because you've been falling asleep with the wheel for short periods of time. And lucky for you that loud vibration sound that you heard was from the Robles trips along the shoulder of the highway that may have saved your life. My advice is to pull over at the first safe spot. Yeah, like Ah, well lighted, active. Rest. Stop and grab a quick nap. 15 to 20 minutes will do the trick. Thanks. Guys. Don't drive drowsy. It could kill you. "Own it And they can move forward over their yaks playing well, but dealing with the injuries trying to manage their way through this season in which so many of us have Already assumed that they would be a postseason team. And most of us have tried to Figure out Whether Finishing first is worth anything or not, and come to the conclusion that it really isn't. So how do you approach this season? Let's find out what they are doing a rare ofthe day for Pete called there the record he doesn't have to cover the ex. Tonight. You'll be back on the beat this week, though, and hey, give us a few minutes toe. Discuss where they are right now and where their mindset is. Coach Caldera. Have you been great, Chris? How you doing? I'm doing fine. How's the singing going? Have you had any good? I didn't realize the Henry Hudson singers were in quarantine. Should we be concerned are No. They're in quarantine. There. There. That's all I'm saying about them is that so Many people believe that the Henry Hudson Singers air on tape, and All I'm saying is that they actually live at the studio 24 7 and they sing on cue. So ah, meant for women, and they really are a talented group and You know, they get breaks for snacks and to go to the bathroom. But other than that, they have to be there all the time, ready to sing at a moments notice it's great to have him. House band. No question. Imagine what your career would have been like you, not a house band the whole time. Exactly For those who don't know Pete is a lie. An outstanding I don't know what you're a lounge singer. That's a little bit fifties ish. What are you? I would just like to say I'm a band singer. You know, I am the singer lucky enough to sing with Or when we when we had a normal well, yes. You know, like Justin? Yes. Back in the 2019 you know, I've been staying with the family of an orchestra Manhattan and, Ah, Once, at least once a month, and they're you know, they do all the standards and they're fantastic in there at the Carnegie Club, and soon one day hopefully we'll all be back. You gotta miss it, huh? Whoa, Miss Miss a terrible leaving. I thought you would. All right. Let's get to more bright news. And that is the Yankees overall. Even though the injuries air here they certainly number one can afford them and number two. We wanted to see The Clint Freighters and the Dior Schellas. And now maybe Miguel and ours anyway, form or evaluation time as they try to figure out just what the 2021 beyond Yankees will look like. So where are they right now? What do you think Their mindset is? And what do you think Brian Cashman is thinking about As we all wait for October and the quote unquote rials Season to start Yeah. I mean, I think, Chris that they're sort of back in that 2019 next man up phase and they went through it and got through it as well as you could. They won the The division in a walk last year, you know, replacing guys and putting a record 30 different players on the injured list and still coming out on the other side of it. You know, with the division title, So I think you know that it's important that they've gone through this before. And they know that, uh, that that's no excuse for for Obtaining the goals that they have established for themselves, and it also shows The real depth of off this club and, you know, we knew that when we were wondering Where the at bats for for Fraser coming from where and do hard batch coming from it. If he's on this roster, and then obviously you know that injuries do occur, and you saw it last year, and now you've got Standing out for 3 to 4 weeks. You've got Judge Cool. He believes in the club believes could be back as soon as next Saturday when he's eligible to come off the injured list with that with that calf situation, it's you know, Judge if it was up to him, he'd be playing right now. Based on what he said today. And, you know, now you're dealing with a lemak. You injury that Looks like it's at least two weeks, if not a little more, based on this similar injury, had 2018 with Colorado If, in fact it is the same injury. He's going to see a hand specialist. I'll have a little more clarity early next week about how long he'll be out for But yes, you're you know, you probably see Ah Estrada Wade Platoon second base. You've seen what talk went it can do, and Frasier is absolutely scorching hot at the right time in right field. I was reading or or musing about the possibility of her Shelagh. Playing some second so that Andrew Horror could play third. How did they get into hard bats? How do they do that with even with and this is a bad sign for him? Because there's three guys out three starters out Judge Stanton LeMay, you And still you're squeezing and and tryingto, you know, maneuver to get Miguel and Bihar who last Wee remembers a pretty garden darn good stick. Summit bats and some meaningful of bat. So you know, it won't be one here one there. I mean, that's the one thing I wanted with Frasier. And of course he's come through. But even if he was over nine right now, I wish I would hope that he'd be in the lineup again tonight. I want to see these guys play. During this season, how they're going to do that without door? Yeah, it looks like he'll be in the lab tomorrow. Ah, when there's a left hander going so that's that's one way to get him in against the occasional lefty starter. You're right. You know when you have to start manipulating positions to get his paddle out. I mean, it's one thing if he's He's in there and hot. It's hard for him to get in there and stay hot money's, you know, sporadically in the lineup. You know, Obviously, you saw Clint Frazier get his way in there, and there's sort of an open spot They're now to play with, with Ah, with the injury to judge and the Kind of revolving door designated hitter right now, But yeah, it's difficult for and horn and frankly, you know when when he's in there, the glove is a deficit, whether it's in left field or third base, so Yeah, you're gonna have to find creative ways to get his bat in the lineup on And you know, this is still a pretty potent offense, even with the elements you have missing. So I think that that is going to be a challenge, but right now Ah phew! The Yankees. It's sort of a nice, you know, dilemma have right now..

"You know so much with the pied pipers Canada's gonna say they need a lead singer you know Sinatra at the sands with the Henry Hudson's I mean it's it's got a ring to it I'd look forty hearing that how you doing everything all right goodwill Dissidia beyond September I'm doing great how bout you I'm sorry to hear your voice again and and and the talk of baseball yeah absolutely it is I appreciate that and the family is good and everything in all of these these have been such challenging times for everybody in terms of just living their lives in in some sort of fashion where they can get through each day and I get that color to move to the hopefully to some resolution to this and it's wearing on people there's no question about it the the inability to move forward on the thing and and get it at least somewhere near the rear view mirror is is more difficult every day because we don't seem to be making a kind of progress we want to where you know you you said it today to you know that the day's call by but the months of have flown and and I mean what are we it really doesn't seem like a long time ago that we were all in in in Tampa and and everything was was was was kind of breaking up and now here we are in what should have been approaching the all star break in the in in the regular baseball season and and we're just getting started and yeah it's it's it's been I mean obviously you know crazy an unprecedented times so in historic times in in a lot of sense in in the four months but it it has kind of flown in here we are waiting to hopefully and possibly start up of a very abbreviated baseball season what's your level of confidence on them being able to pull this off and if you have doubts where did they reside most as a as a thinking guy and a guy who knows the rhythm of a baseball clubhouse and the baseball day where you arrive at the park at let's say Pete's got a feature dories got a story he wants to get out and the game is at seven you know Pete's pulling in the parking lot to thirty quarter to three trying to catch somebody at three thirty and then there are the rest of the day and then do the post game and I get out of there you're not alone there a lot of people out of quit that people players trainers everybody else that lives that lifestyle day in and day out wow what are your biggest concerns and what your level of confidence well I you know I I think you have to go into it with it with a healthy bit of skepticism here just because you know as you mentioned it's it's all encompassing and it's not just the three players on the roster to begin with in the sixteen man you know full full pool players that they'll be dealing with it it's all the all of us in the media it's it's it's grounds crew and security it sits medical staff it sits yes so many of the elements that go into putting in a baseball game on every day and then you know just to start up but you know there's obviously more people involved in in a in a spring training type setting so yeah you're going to have to test all these people all of us you're going to have to monitor them you're going to have to have or call in place if someone does come up positive for for covert nineteen their distance so much into it that we don't know that we'll just have to see as we go along and you know if and if we get through this three week period of you know what it's going to be a daily cross your fingers you know that we travel in and all the things that that encompass so this type of Jordan baseball season will will go off is is that there's a hole in it but there's just so much out there that we don't know you can't plan for predict that gonna dictate how how this goes and not just baseball but but in all the major sports no doubt about it and and my concern and I think you would agree is is they can control a lot about the venue while they're at the venue but if the rest of the time for all of all the people you talked about all the ancillary people auxiliary people that are needed and are part of putting out a baseball game and obviously the players themselves it's you know it's the food it's the drink is using the bathroom its it's driving it's all the other times when you are away from the venue in this case a ballpark that have to worry the people put the game on wait and we're out of the bubble here in in in in the baseball city there's going to be traveled there there's going to be people going back to their their homes and their families and then coming back into the into the ballpark and things like that and yes they'll still be regular testing for anyone who yeah and distancing obviously to you know from a from a coverage standpoint and and a lot of other of you know you're gonna have players sitting in the stands perhaps in distancing and and then having to distance out of in their own dugouts and clubhouses it it's it's a it's a wide unprecedented undertaking that I I don't think we can we can imagine it but the seating practices is going to be fascinating and it it it I I think it's it's going to be there's gonna be some difficulties in in trying to just make this all work do you have a sense of what the hardest challenge will be for baseball I mean the interaction of players and just you know just to see if those seeds and and high fiving and celebrating a home run and almost I mean these guys if they you know people don't understand I don't think or they don't think about it we're doing this since they were seven and eight years old been a dog out sharing experiences it's a physical life Pete it's a physical life being a ball player it just is I mean it's it's one of the things that they miss when they retire if there's a camaraderie and a closeness to it that it's it's sort of an intangible to talk about but there is physical contact all the time as part of the lifestyle of being a team player and that in this case we're talking baseball that that's gonna be tough for these guys all of a sudden but we we don't do that anymore it's gonna be a very difficult transition I would think not sure will and it's not just the you know what within your own club colleges here yes you know how how much a part of baseball is mingling behind the batting cage and and has you know and there's so many connections in the game you know coaches players from other teams coming over to say hello and and and all that is that is that going to go on with the batting practice gonna look like I mean that you you know what yeah you know what a kind of a spectacle of a conflict that is just the you know with everyone being in close proximity and then just I mean that right that that's part of the game that's you know in the in the pregame sitting idle I have no idea what that's gonna look like what we know is that you know players and when they had their workouts in in Tampa when they closed.

"The number. So the tristate area now in the hands of these crazy democratic tax and spend governors just tax everybody to death. They can't raise the property tax anymore. They can't raise the state text anymore. So they just taxing everything in Connecticut. They're voting today on putting tolls on every inch of every road. This crazy, wacky Connecticut. Governor has come up with cat taxes. You your cat will now be taxed fifteen dollars for a license. Thirty dollars a year. Most cats never leave the house, whether they need a license where in New Jersey. I mean, it's going crazy. Let's go to Jack in New Jersey, hijack good morning. Gesture. Talking about the taxes. See your Schumer raise your American yesterday. He saying a rain tax for us here. That's true. In New Jersey. They're not gonna tax the rain that falls on your house. In other words, depending on how hard it rains rains on your house. Some of the water runs off your lawn. They're going to put a tax on that water. That's one of the Facebook and suggest you missing a boat here. I think that we should all have to take a breathing. Chest. Determine the volume of your lungs, and how many respiration you have Nicole of a day. Exactly. You know, you think he's kidding. There's there's gonna be a rain tax in New Jersey. How much rain comes off your lawn will be taxed there'll be a breathing texts this Connecticut, governor who Lamont total lunatic. They I guess dogs have always had to have license. You have to have a dog license and you pay for that. So some point Lamont must've said what about cats and they explained him. We we don't have to have a license a cat because the cat doesn't leave the house. Yeah. But it's fifteen dollars for the license. It could be thirty a year to renew it. So there's going to be a cat tax in Connecticut. Let's go to Tom in Connecticut. Hey, tom. Good morning, Mark. Yes, tom. We could have a moment of silence for the state of Connecticut with the tolls. Going to be shoved down our throats later on today. Yeah. It doesn't look like it's going to get. It's really bad. It's starts with eighty five. Tolls. Eighty five. That's not like the old days we had to build a toll booth and lots of construction. It's just a gantry. It's just a poll that goes over the road. Look if you go over the Henry Hudson or the frogs, Nick, you don't even see it. It's just like a little wire over the bridge. So it'll say five, but you don't want just a little wire that's another one hundred and eighty five more wires, it'll be three hundred of them by the time, you know, it and when they say, it's ten cents a mile. Once you got the stuff hooked up. You can just push your button and change the price on it. You know, the Henry Hudson bridge, remember four dollars. But you just go into the computer and just type of things, you know, what eight dollars. Now, you don't see it. And you don't have to reach in your pocket or take out the money. So now when you cross the bridge what ten dollars they forgot to tell you. So that's what's going to happen in Connecticut. You're saying to yourself well, fourteen cents. It's going to be fourteen dollars before you know, it. Let's go to Dave in Chicago. Hey, dave. Yes. Good morning. Mark things are going very well for television. Actress Lori Laughlin, obviously, we know about the cheating scandal. But the latest news from FOX is she's being super five hundred billion dollars by a woman who's claims her daughter or son did not get into school because of this. She's suffering from emotional distress. The actress foster hallmark acting job. I guess she was the face of hallmark also lost her role on fuller house so can actresses or even actors recover from something. Like this a little further down the road. No, not really. In fact, all these colleges are now talking to each other all these kids have got into this admission scandal because are planning to expel all of them one by one they'll all. Be expelled. I mean, the lawsuit. First of all could be thrown out for. Suing Laurie Lachlan for five hundred billion. Yeah. Good luck with that. And your kid didn't get in it just put that moron. Kid on the stand. This show. I didn't yet. But they did take is that true that they take a spot. There's a limited number. They can accept. Yeah. But it's a college. If somebody built a building made a big donation, you know what there's another spot. Oh, that's okay. It's one more saying if they really wanted that other kid they would have taken that other kid all they probably could take an extra one if they wanted to. Yes. Yeah. I I don't know what Laurie locked into first of all she can take a year or two to fight these charges and try to escape criminal conviction. And then after that, I don't know what will she do go on Ellen and tell her story. I'm sure yeah. The motion what she did is cry cry. And. Yeah. "And they don't think that they can stop it. Felonies in cops the cops always I've had a few times where cops have approached me not in person. But emails whatever to cover their like race. The you know, the cops will build a drag car, right? Invite we act way back when with grudge for nineteen. We say the right right in the race the cops. And like, I go I just read back I go. I, you know. Okay. I realized what you're doing is good. But like, I don't think these people want to hang out with and race the cops. I think that's coming to not the point. Right. I think they really just would rather be assholes like being an asshole is the point. Now the the race it self is fucking secondary. Right. It's really about being an asshole. So the best analogy that the the captain, we're not the captain. I think the sergeant were with was like Roman times they were doing the same thing going out with horses. Riding around, and it's no different from then versus now. It's just the vehicles change way. Do they have takeovers in Rome with horses? Well, it costs the idea the call going Circus Maximus same shit NASCAR. You get what I'm saying idea that no matter what people wanna watch competitions whether it be in a grand stadium or something in the street. God street racing seems so fucking dumb to me though. It's just I just I I know I sound like the old guy. I did one St. race. When I was fifteen I got my ass handed to me. That's you had one with the mini to. Well. No. That was that was when I got arrested for quote racing. Right. It was just me and another dude going fast on the Henry Hudson. I wasn't I didn't even know that guy wasn't a race. It was just like two guys going driving fast together. Like if I could've if I could have found that guy. I probably could have like got him to court to say that we weren't actually racing. Like, Tom MorningStar did in Arizona right there in bold run on boron twenty I don't know eleven maybe I don't remember that. Whenever had the GT five hundred whatever year that. Yeah. Okay. Oh, no MorningStar was driving in Arizona and a bunch of people got arrested for racing on the highway that was the charge. Not speeding just racing on the highway. So they all coordinated an effort to go to court together and say, no your honor. We weren't racing. We were just driving fast together. And because everyone coordinated it. They negated the whole thing got thrown out. Right. Which you know, I'm not saying that was the most responsible thing. No. No, no. I know I know. But that's just crazy. The the world we live in now that like this is the because of the advent of social media, and that the fact that you can make money off those types of videos. It's yeah. That's the reason the reason of them wanting to go drive cars KOMO it's the idea of everyone on famous, and then the fact that not only are they wanting to be seeing interrupting they realize that can make money. Sorry now says Sarah looks bored. I said not. Completely bored. I just don't feel like interrupting it's look it's a radio show that happens to be on video. There's nothing so editing. There's no makeup. I love that. We'll Scholtz who's one of the editors of many of our shows just jumped into he'll ignore those comments. Don't encourage those comments read the fucking comments where people donate those are Bolshevik com. Real. We we'll get respect salts though. And he gets to that super chat is in the last half hour show. Okay. Sorry. Yeah. We we got this. We'll get to how long does this show ninety minutes. Okay. Well, you're gonna countdown already. No, no. I just have a place. What time is your flight? Eight o'clock. What else is happening on NBC sports? So some of the other segments grassroots. We did a whole episodes etiquette dedicate at the grassroots racing. So Zack has joined the show, and he's he did adrift segment English town, the roots of drifting in on the east coast. The what's that circuit called the wall or something I just.

"We just liked each other right away working those long nights together, Lisa and stormy forged a fast friendship despite their forty four year age gap for years. The cubbyhole was stormies top gig and when it closed in nineteen ninety, Lisa decided by the bar herself. She opened it one year later as Henrietta Hudson. And when it came time to staff up, she knew just who to call stormy worked for me immediately. I assembled an incredible staff like the the crumbs Ella crumb of the downtown scene stormy worked the door at Henry Hudson into her late seventies. It was her steadiest paycheck. But even after she formerly retired, Lisa kept paying her asked her why she needed the money and she deserved it, and she's my friend, and I do a lot of fundraising and stuff like that. There's nothing wrong which is instead of fundraising for an organization just directly give somebody money who's amazing who does a lot of the community. The fact that Lisa kept paying stormy even after she stopped working there. It touched me. There is such a simple gesture, but something so big at the same time, you know, stormy would come in on a Sunday night. She sit at the bar, get back Iraq's and she getting envelope. It was kind of like she was collecting a pension. Stormy kept coming in Henrietta Hudson until about twenty ten then cheese stop coming. She was getting older intended to stay closer to home. She in Lisa fell out of touch. And then Lisa got some news stormy had fallen in broken bone, and because she had no listed blood relatives, she was taken under the care of the state and she was suffering from dementia. Stormies neighbors. Woman named Michelle upon reach out to Lisa, a bunch of other people in the bar scene stormy knew she set up a meeting to try to figure out how they could help her. There about twelve, maybe fourteen people we got together. We talked about the situation. I didn't see anything solution based. I didn't really see that anybody was looking for a solution. They would just kind of in the problem, but we were slated to meet the next week and come back with some. You know, some something to people showed up. It was me and Michelle, why didn't know I never knew her, but it was a fucking heartache that nobody's came into the second meeting. No one else was stepping up. So Lisa, Michelle stepped in. They met with a lawyer state congressman and judge and won the right to be stormies, legal guardians, and their first order business. They put stormy up in the Cadillac of nursing homes so she could finish out her days in comfort. It was a beauty was a utopian idea of this assisted living facility for people who didn't have a lot of money that showed them respect. And that was pretty, and that was clean. Had good food and activities, and everybody was so loving, they knew stormies backstory. They were intrigued after all those years of fighting, she was safe. She was comfortable and she was being taken care of the same way she had taken care of others her whole life. Stormy is somebody for whom life was really hard from the day. She was born. She was labelled illegitimate and it's a label that could have followed her throughout her entire life. It could've made her bitter, but neither one of those things happened, it was touching and it was beautiful. How at the end of stormies life, you know, the people that she protected for so long came back to protect her. She had given out so much love over the course of her life. It really it really came back as a comfort to her in the end. That is, that's the lesson to me that of her life. That's like the lesson that her life teaches. You could pull out a gun on people pack a pistol you could. But you could also be a loving person. And story was just too so brave like she, she didn't feel the need to fulfil anybody's ideas about, you know what she should look like or how she should dress or who she should be. You know, she fought a lot about -als and she put up with a lot of shit..
