"Of the last full time major leaguers who spent the early part of his career playing in the Negro Leagues. All black baseball thrived at the height of Jim Crow before Jackie Robinson of the then Brooklyn Dodgers broke baseball's color barrier. Just a month before Hank Aaron died. Major League Baseball announced it would include decades worth of Negro League figures in its official record books away to honor past players never given their proper deal and to try to atone for the injustice of segregated baseball. Is it enough? Well, maybe not says my next guest. Rohan. Ricardo Phillips is a poet, historian and author well known for his sports writing. And he wrote about this in The New York Times Magazine This past week, the headline Justice for the Negro Leagues will mean more than just steps and Roland Ricardo Phillips joins me now welcome. Thanks, Madeline. Well, heck, Aaron. He died a few months ago. And as we mentioned he was one of the last full time Negro League players to be in the major leagues. You ate that He is the player where statistics and society meet. What do you mean by that? Well, let's go back, for instance, to when Babe Ruth broke the all time home run record. It's not something that we come back to you and I just think that when you think about the cataclysmic Uproar. That was Hank Erin's slow but steady March 2 715 home runs. It was a moment when the nation really took to heart, not just the achievement that Aaron was undertaking, but the cost you know, Henry aren set a record he never would have wanted to set leading up to breaking Babe Ruth's home run record. And that was the Most amount of fan mail received in the year by a private individual. But ah, lot of that fan mail was in the form of death threats to him and to his family. So the problem wasn't for Aaron. Statistical. It was a moment when you really got a sense of what to a large swath of society. Certain numbers mean and they're not about Sports per se, But they're about as is often the case with sports what it means to be a human being, what it means to be alive and We feel that we can be okay. Honoring And once you break the hollowed record, like Henry Aaron was about to do and then subsequently did. Then there's no argument left so you could see the way in which everyone was looking at this as not just one home run after another. This seven Oh, three there, 7043705. But rather what we do with those numbers and why it's not the number that's important. It's rather than how in the wind and the wine Yeah, right. So the number is just kind of an arbitrary statistic in a sense, but it does say a lot as we heard from been Scully in his excited call. It says what America hoped Itwas moving past segregation into integration into a better, more just place. But as you say, given the fact that Hank Aaron then had to receive all of these letters, this all this hate mail. Seriously, a double edged sword and I guess I'm wondering how that weight on him and how that weighed on other black players at the time. Well, you know, the irony of it all is that he said Actually, at the moment after hit the home run, and he was interviewed, you know, he said, Thank God it's over. And he's well known even to the end of his life, to say publicly that he didn't enjoy the moment. But Henry Aaron's ascent Too. You know the home run throne. If you will wasn't just about him, and he really understood that he wrote an article that was syndicated papers as he was getting up to 715 home runs. Remembering that he played for the Negro leagues that he started with the Indianapolis clowns and that there are a lot of players who didn't have the opportunity on good fortune, and it must be said talent. That he had to express himself. On an integrated team in the major leagues. So he Hank Aaron. He was in the Negro leagues for a very short time, right. He was with the Indianapolis clowns and Now there is this move by Major League baseball. They announced in December that and I would just want to read their statement. MLB is correcting a longtime oversight in the game's history by officially elevating the Negro leagues to major league status. First of all before we get into that statement in the wording of it. What exactly will they be doing? What does it mean that they're now elevating as they say, the Negro leagues to major league status? Well, that Madeleine is the $50 million question. The idea that's far is too Consider the Negro League records from 1920 to about 1948 as being the period that they would consider for absorption, I guess into The major league record books. That would be because 1920 would was when the Negro leagues as we know them was officially founded by a group Foster and his colleagues who's an amalgamation of seven leagues, which is why it's called the Negro Leagues and the post of the Negro Leagues, Singular. And the last kind of year in which there Woz enough data. I guess they feel in the form of box scores and, um, game reports and such like that takes us to about 1948, and from what I understand, it's still very much a work in progress. And that's the that's the story. So the idea would be. For instance, Josh Gibson's 4 41 batting average would be all of a sudden V last major leaguer to have hit Over 400 right now It's been Ted Williams. But now would be Josh Gibson. This I think is all phenomenal. Yeah, So what's the harm in that? Like it sounds great. On the face of it. To include players from the Negro leagues in the major leagues, Statistics. What's wrong with them? What's wrong with it? I think that there's First of all you know, as I wrote in the story, the notion of elevating these players to make surely status. Is incredibly problematic. The implication is that the Negro leagues were beneath Major League Baseball. On. That's certainly not the case, so there's no need to elevate players records to any level two. There's a danger in retroactively adjusting the historical record. The players in the Negro leagues from 1922 1948, or just like the black baseball players from 18 67 to 1947, who were denied. An opportunity to play professional baseball in the major leagues. It's important, I think to understand. That continuum..

Special Team Stud who will be playing in the conference championship game on Sunday against the Chiefs and Arrowhead will join us and then at 9 P.m. Eastern six, Pacific. The maid saw video that I put out there today kind of doing some smack talking to Gus ferocity. Pro football. Um, former pro football pro bowler who was a quarterback for many years in the league. He joins us each and every week in his weekly spot during the football season, and unfortunately, Gus has one embarrassing moment where he was celebrating when he was a member of the Washington football team. Smashed his head into the concrete wall had ended up straining the neck muscle had to leave the game. And I think that the hospital, actually so I reenacted that saying I would run through a wall to win our playoff picks, and that didn't make the rounds on social media so you could check that out, and we'll get Gus his reaction to it. I think he took it well. He has joked about that moment before to me, and I have not brought it up. So I would imagine that he's all fine with that. So we'll get his thoughts on this upcoming weekend and also the video in our playoff picks coming up later. Can you imagine, though, if he's No way that may we go out there at 9 P.m. eastern. Hey, guys, How you doing? Yeah, I'm never coming on your show again. I'm not talking to you Click hang up. The phone would be well played by one Gus for out of the Maybe he calls us back and That's all. Yeah, I was just pranking and messing around with you. I don't know how Gus is going to play this, he said. He's got a trick up his sleeve. So who knows? Maybe he's just trying to be a Twitter tough guy. Or maybe he is just bluffing. Who knows? Maybe actually got something up his sleeve once again. Who knows? I don't know. So we'll do a lot of football today clearly to football Friday. We're now two days away. From Conference championship Sunday, the first game you got the Bucks going up against the Packers. There will be no eh bien that game. Antonio Brown is out, so we'll talk about that later. How that will factor into this game. The Antonio Brown presence not being there. You got hurt last week. It's I thought he was gonna be good to go for this game. You don't really hear much about I. Nobody was noncommittal the other day when he did discuss it, and you got the report today. I think the first one on the scene was Tom Palace Arrow who said that Antonio Brown is going to be out on Sunday. The NFC title game. Then again, number two Patrick Mahomes. He's been practicing all week, but he was still in concussion protocol. He is now out of concussion protocol. So he's good to go for Sunday and that battle between the Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead so we'll get into all the football. The majority of the show. Today will be football, but we do have to start out on a somber note, and we look back today. They tremendous human being. A unbelievable baseball player. Yes, he's a Hall of Famer, and that's what you associate him with his baseball. But really, it's more than that. And not only was he a Hall of Famer, he just the Hall of Fame person as unfortunately we lost Hank Aaron. Today at the age of 86. I could go through all the stats for you. I could tell you, he's all Famer. He's the home run King and I know some people still consider him the home run King cause of what many people do consider is the tainted record of one Barry Bonds and you could look back in his career. The 25 all stars being an M V. P being a world serious champion, and you also know the number 7 15, and he ended his career with 755 home runs, but the importance of the number 7 15 with 10 passing Babe Ruth on the all time home run list at the time and 74 to become the home run king and hitting that home run off out downing going up against the Dodgers. But, you know, you look back at it. And, yes, you and clearly I wasn't alive. Clearly, I never saw him play. I didn't meet Hank Aaron wants, which I'll talk about. A little bit later on and just how surreal of the moment that was for May at such a young age, and you could just tell being in his presence. How nice of a man he was and how he was at an appearance and, you know, sometimes athletes could be at at appearances. You don't know how engaged they are. But when I met Hank Aaron, he was very engaged and is one of the coolest experiences. In the sports world that I've really ever encountered in one of these figures that are just larger than life, you hear so much about and you hear about the legend of Henry aren of them. When you're able to meet him at such a young age like I was, it was unbelievable. And I was really an also, I'll tell that in a little bit, But when you talk about Henry Aaron and you look back at Hank Aaron, what is the first baseball thing that comes to mind the first baseball thing that comes to mind like we said April 8th 1974 When he surpassed Babe Ruth on the all time home run list, and he had home run 7 15, but it goes so much more than that. Because, unfortunately for Hank Aaron, he had to put up with an absurd amount of racism. No one should have to put up with any amount of racism. What he had to put up with was just absolutely ridiculous. And I was reading about it today, and I knew about it obviously before today, but I was reading a lot of the obituaries and a lot of the articles about it. And you just go through and you see the hate mail. You hear how he would get taunted on the road, and people would just say the nastiest of things to him and call him the n word he would get death threats. And the FBI actually had to step in a few times and investigate not only the death threats But also people were threatening If you break this record if you break this record that was there for 35 40 years. Um, if you if you go back at it or more than that, If you break this record, we're gonna kidnap your Children. I think about that. And how much now do we talk about mental health? And the awareness of mental health with athletes. And at that time and it's a different time. You know, there's no social media mental health. I don't even know if it was a thought then because I don't even know if it was the thought 5 10 years ago to just be fully transparent. And you go through all that. And he was still able to show up to the ballpark every day with a smile on his face. And continue to head home run after home run after home run. You know all through the lead up of him breaking That record. And him putting himself at 715 home runs like Can you imagine? And I know on Twitter. Nowadays, people get death threats and people get hate mail still to this day, and fans say, sometimes disgusting things. The athletes that Should never, and I don't even know why people would say that. To athletes, but you.

"Is a great moment for all of it. And particularly for Henry aren Vin Scully. They're putting it in perspective. That was Hank Aaron 7 15. Unfortunately, hammering. Hank passed away today at the age of 86. He would've in 87. On February 5th and will continue to talk about it and you lose eulogize one of baseball's royalty there, and there's other like you said Milo Hamilton had a great column, but Kurt Gowdy had a great call of it. And it's amazing to. We've discussed this before, and I know Craig Sager was one of the guys running on the field. But the guys running on the field all remember at Fulton County Stadium that big MasterCard Back there. Think of it as money like credit cards, new thinking with his money. Great. Always remember that. So what a moment the launching pad in the old conversation, and John Shea did reach out to us, and we'll get you on shake shake. Hey, so tight with Willie and It's a tough day for Willie Mays obviously lose the great Henry Aaron, his friend and Contemporary. Well, he came up few years before, but you know, they played so many years against each other. And you know in the National League All Star game was basically Dolph a lot never die. Getting second. It was incredible. But how different it would have been, you know. Had, uh, may's play to the more hitter friendly ballpark E the Polo grounds with a huge center field when he came to Candlestick and the prevailing when you knocked down the right hand to pull hitter, so he had a It opened up his stance to hit the ball out to center and right center is amazing Hitter to go up like that and still had 6 60 so But, yeah, I mean and Scully He said so many great, iconic moments that he's called in his career. But you gotta understand. He's the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers. There. That home run record was set by an Atlanta brave and I know at the moment it's supersedes. The color of the jerseys and the team you're working for, but got his call was great. Milos was more about the significance and he nailed it. There's a new home run king of all time, and it's Henry Aaron, but for Scali to get into the racial Tension and you know, and nobody says marvelous the way Vinnie says. Marvelous and it was just such a In the event, Scully's finest moment, and he's had so many the co fellas and it was called a co faxes. No hitter over the summer, they re plated on Sirius Radio later the archived anyway, he's just I mean, Just so brilliant the way he captured not just the significance of the record and Babe Ruth, but the fact that a black man did it in the deep south of Atlanta, Georgia. I was going through that hell that he had to go through. It was almost, you know, taboo topic to even talk about what he was going through for most of mainstream America, but for Scully to bring that up, and to have the enlightenment of it During a Dodger broadcast was just incredible. So what a loss. What loss has been a hard year plus losing all these baseball hall of Famers. But today Not just the baseball world, the sports world. I think the world world because of the significance. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and 47 But in 74 when Hank Aaron, you know past Babe Ruth, that that was a huge, momentous moment in this country. You're right. And you know there are There many great sports figures, but I don't know. I think there's a handful that when they pass away as a sportsman, you just stop and he's one of them. Willy will be one of them. I mean, there's just that's you know, Kobe last year was one of them. It's just When when these kind of things happen, no matter what the agent in Kobe was far too young, obviously, But no matter what the age, it's jarring as a fan, you know, toe lose these kind of icons. Like this morning when I saw it. It was like, Whoa! I mean, you stop all death. Most deaths are Very tragic. But, man, When you see something like this, it's like you stopped for me to go. Wow. Hank Aaron. That's what I had this morning. I mean, there's some people. You think they're gonna live forever. But you know, they're not. And they are gonna live forever. Henry Aaron, you know, playing right field for the Atlanta Braves is gonna live forever in my mind. You know, it's just It's never gonna go away. They're never going to die. You know Tom Seaver without dropping, driving his knee on the mound. Tom Seaver's never gonna die in my mind. It's like great musicians. You know, they transcend time, their work and their body of work. And that's so great with you, too. But you never saw Hank Aaron play. You can go watch a lot of games. Get the MLB at bad at they have classic games up and I'm sure they'll have more today. Very bonds just sent out a tweet. A very nice thought on on Hank Aaron rest in peace. Hank Aaron, a true baseball legend, and then a couple of paragraphs on him and No for us in the Bay Area. It resonates because it was bonds, who broke His mortal record of 7 55 when he pushed it out.
