"hendrick motorsports" Discussed on The Final Lap

"The question has. Jj are caught up with hendrick motorsports or even ryan blaney since he wanted to racist recently. Well in this format the playoffs and championship format. It's hard to tell who actually is where before we get to the playoffs because a lot of people won't really show all their cards. They're kind of are in being their way To to the playoffs even though there's not much you can do it. The cars this year with the parts. Free and all that stuff There's still some kind of weird developments going on because all of a sudden now. The offs have started and these guys at joe gibbs racing that you know church won three races early in the year hamlin hadn't won and christopher bell won the won at daytona road course but has been kind of out to lunch for a lot of the season novel sudden playoffs and they've elevated to another level so they were hiding and holding something back for sure The question is are they better than the hendrick cars. I don't know 'cause the intercourse keep shooting themselves in the foot yet. Larsen and start in the back of the race. So that kinda threw out the very beginning Thrown over Jackson stuff so if they can clean up those issues we might see a head to head battle and no and it might be a pretty fantastic battle. We've got you know two hundred cars in the bubble which we'll talk about in just a second. I mean alex. Bowman william buyer. I will never thought those two guys would be fighting for a chance to move on from the first round. Yeah frogs bone. You've got three wins this season e-expect into the round one with three wins. And your back pocket becky. I'm pretty good the male not the case. So you've got to really be on your on your ps and qs and the play offs and Had a rough luck to start things Some of its self inflicted But they've got a really clean things up here in the last week of course every week. It seems like he's tied for that last spot but loses the tiebreaker based on the best finish the round. So he's going to have to get something this week bristol. Yeah he's tied with the kurt busch for that That bubble shot there in twelfth. And you got to tyler. Radic william buyer and michael mcdowell is basically drowning. I mean he's coast yeah. i mean. you can't really recover much from that. darlington crash. The only chance he really had was the dry flawlessly and hope other people had problems just based on the equipment level but they have their front row motorsports and they kind of lost that advantage early on when when they crashed at darlington. So they're just kind of hoping for some kind of a crazy hail. Mary win out of nowhere if there was a road if there was a road course or a superspeedway next then i'd say he has a shot. But it's yeah personnel. Thing was if he could have gotten out of this round and somehow made it to the next one. He would have been dangerous. Because you've got a road course and you've got a place in the next round But yeah this isn't boating. Welfare michael mcdowell. Certainly certainly not. Oh this just in the nineteen car. Had one secure unsecured lug nut after the race so his crew chief james small will have a smaller wallet by ten thousand dollars. I think he's gonna be very happy. They're going to one lug nut retire next year. So can we talk about that initial start. I know you mentioned it briefly. Yeah yeah can we talk about how stupid i could see martin side of things i mean. What does he spoke. You know. I see martin side exactly. So what do you want him to do when we go ahead and hamlin puts the gas down and is trying to go and so goes crap. I gotta go now to hamlin. Spends his tires. What do you want to slam on the brakes. Because if he does and then raise the from behind. So so your option is if you're martin church junior is to just start the dang race and hope for the best and you get penalized for not crashing the field. So i don't know. I think that's the stupidest call they need to figure something out or visually look at the video and say okay well. Denny spun his tires. I mean that needs to be a balls and strike kinda call. They've got all this s. T. data so what they can do. They can go back and make sure that troops did not accelerate before hamlin did i mean they have the data. They can do that right. so once. You determine that and you determine hamlin punched it. I you know okay. Wheels must have spun because he didn't make the lion. I i can also assume they have eyeballs. They could look pretty obvious. So sometimes they have these black and white rules which they enforce black and white which should be open to interpretation and then they have these other rules. That should be black and white. Because it's so obvious that they don't enforce that way so frustrating luckily for martin tricks junior and his fanbase he was able to make a miraculous rally but he shouldn't have had to do all that i mean he's really should have had the lead on lap. One should have been just fine. So i don't agree with that ruling and never have i understand if he beat them to the line just because he's an idiot that's fine and went to heads fine. But he didn't go early. So i mean that's just that's a stupid safe to say martin tricks juniors not an idiot so i am so excited about this coming up next a true nascar legend. He's in the hall of fame. He has the fancy shirts everything. He's a champion. i'm sure he has a wing dedicated to him right rusty wallace on this show. He's next you will listen. Enjoy on t. f. l. w. off mike us at facebook dot com slash the final lap. Like us this is the final lap weekly on the final lap with us. Today once again is nascar hall of famer driver and champion rusty wallace. Welcome back to the.

"Bad times. Well i'm kinda gonna pick something contrary to to jeff him and i'm gonna pick arm because i think as much as he is breathing cyber relief heading into daytona knowing that he's locked in I'm sure he's still not happy with where he stands. And that's because you know go into a race track. I think most of the pre ratio was centered around how dominant kevin. Harvick has been at michigan And i don't know What was going on with that team. Yesterday but dominance was definitely not You know in their lexicon they. They finished fourteenth. I believe they didn't have a very good day at all Didn't run up front. So i think they have to still be trying to figure out do i. Are we hitting the panic button yet or not. I think they should have been doing it a few weeks ago. But we'll see And i'm gonna pick another kind of low hanging fruit and austin dillon. obviously yesterday. He had what he dubbed a rocket. Ship very very fast car in the opening stages of that race and then an unfortunate incident with brad keselowski took him out in a very hard hit thankfully he was okay but really made it a must win situation for him in daytona. Good thing is you know he. He has experienced a really good experience and superspeedway racing. And i often don't has a very good chance at coming home with the wind in daytona and possibly punching his ticket to the playoffs but it certainly puts him in a much more stressed build situation than he would have been had. He got a good finish or even a win at michigan by the way bonus points for alexis for working the word lexicon. I love that that was awesome. Brad nearly bad times from michigan. Well we'll go off the austin dillon. And say his teammate. Tyler tolerated you know for having the tire down at the end of the race. Tyler had an opportunity to make up a lot more points on his teammate. He's plus twenty five but he really didn't make up much You know when it came to the finish of that ratio. An opportunity lost in that particular situation. But also ross chastain man. What kind of bad luck to you. Have to lose an axle and then worse look to then get a penalty and be without your car chief. This weekend at daytona. So that's a really tough blow for that team who really has shown a lot of signs of life here recently. Jeff wrap it up. I'm going to start off real quick. Carl larsen he leads. All those laps looked like he's got the dominant car and in the end like you say making the wrong decision. Been in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was not able to capitalize on what was an outstanding effort by him and his number five car and overall almost stick with the same theme. Say hey hendrick. Motorsports the whole. It wasn't just kyle larson. There were two other teammates or were very very fast and one even finished second. But still hendrick motorsports let one slip through their hands. I think the other day so I feel like a bad time. Bad situation all the way round. I think you'll have a hard time finding people to attend a pity party for hendrick motorsports by the way our show is brought to you. By blue emu blue emu. Maximum pain relief. The official pain relief cream of nascar. It works fast. And you won't stink. We're going to talk about penske. Racing and ryan blaney in particular when become back. Do you use the expensive blue or yellow pills to charge your sex life. Are you thinking about it. What if we can promise you the same results for less than three dollars. A pill if you're paying twenty dollars a pill for the other pills..

"From hendrick motorsports. Would you believe that if i told you at the start of the day. Okay you know half a dozen chevrolets finish and you've got to think okay. Four of them will be from hms. No no i agree. I think that that would have been the common thought process. Because the dominance that they've had on road courses and especially this year no matter where we go there always are factors and the thing. Though that i'm looking at kind of like in reverse when you start looking people on the move. Ryan newman eric jones. Justin haley they pick up twenty two and twenty one spots from where they start causes of the crash out of the mess and yeah and they keep her nose clean and the end they they bring home. Something it's able but alexis going back to this chevy thing. Alban dinger wins it in chevy colleague racy collars hendrick. He was third. Chase elliott hendrick. He was four six. Kurt busch ganassi eric jones. I don't know where he came from. Richard petty yeah so the forty-three winds up finishing seventh today. And then just in haley. Another colleague part-time car finishes eighth. I i find that kind of curious. I know sherry has a lot at stake up at the speedway. But i didn't think those would be the guy's we'd be talking about. No you're right. But you know when you think about when i think about your call at the end of the race of aj coming to the checkered flag saying you know. He survived the chaos of the day. All of those guys were able to survive and get themselves great. Wins you talk about hendrick. Motorsports being dominant. Let's be honest. They were dominant most of the day. They ran one two three for a good portion of the event before things with you know. The turtles are curbs. Or whatever you wanna call them started to transpire and then William byron got caught up in that and then things got shuffled out of place. And that's when hendrick motorsports kind of fell a little bit back now. Let's let's be real here. They still finished third. And fourth. With kyle larson and chase elliott but for most of the day running one-two-three. What thought that that would have been Perhaps the way that they wanna finish. But yeah you're right. I mean chevrolets that we certainly don't i'm looking at the running order in air joan specifically You know is one that jumps out at me. Because i don't even recall hearing his name at all at during the day and for him to come home seven at that team atop ten. It's to be a huge huge boost in the arm for that crew. Here's something else. 'cause i'm looking at the big post race here that just now jumped out at me. Jeff him give me your your take on this. The top finishing toyota the toyota performance report of the race. So be that top vanishing toyota. And i we've been doing this for all year long today. Was bubba wallace wallis. The guy that's kind of been kicked around his average finish. This season has been twentieth but here he even had a penalty. One time for cutting a corner got thrown back but managed to survive the re start and comes home thirteenth. And he's the top finishing toyota for the day there when he got that penalty and was thrown to the back. I think there was only fifty cars left in the field. So you know there was. There was so much carnage that it kind of felt a little bit like a a superspeedway race when we only have half of the field out there. But you're right Don't normally get to see bubba. Wallace taken home the top prize for toyota. But at the same time it was one of those kind of days alexis kissed. You kinda sensed it early on that. This was not going to be your normal road course race for whatever reason it had that feeling and it proved out there where you almost had that little and i talked to kelly crandall end of the day here in the media center and asked us. What do you think about that. She said i started riding my column at the interstates to through itta toward heads. Throw start over because everything that we thought that we were gonna see well. It didn't happen that well through seventy two laps. Out of a scheduled eighty-two we only had four cautions that was it but after that one then that triggered the next one which triggered the next one and you poetic. You had a little prescience there you said. Cautions breed cautions. Here's the toyota performance report bubble wallace for the first time this year. Top finishing toyota. He's thirteenth barton tricks junior together. All beat up they had saws on it but somehow or another. He brings it home. Fifteen cow bush was twentieth. He was factor a little bit earlier on. Denny hamlin's toyota. Well we'll talk about the fate and what happened ham. A little bit later on in the show was twenty-third timmy. Hill comes home in twenty seventh and that is our toyota performance. Report brought to you by toyota for the latest toyota racing information visit toyota racing dot com. We'll take a break and come back with more here on talk while we all remember. Denny hamlin's epic playoffville. Nfl it last season for one man. The excitement didn't end with the checkered flag. No for charles magai. That checkered flag inspired him to become checkered joke now. Everything in his life is checkered. His new tom his law even his buddy hair. If you can name. It chuck has checkered it. That's how it all began for this playoff season..

"You for maybe some advice probably not but keep all the evasion i keep but You know it's going to change anti last time at national national so you'll be interested in the to what they drive like how they drive. What the what the challenges are. But i do think that you've got a lot of information a lot of really smart teams. That are going to go after it. And i'm excited to see what What actually happens all right. We've got more from justin hall but you're going to have to wait till next week's program to check it all out. Justin hang tight for a second and this is The final lap weekly dot com. This is the final land. Weekly all right. We are back for a second week with justin all guy. I think this is the first time we're ever doing this so You know. Leave it to justin to be first on the program for a two part interview and i love it. I never Never a dull when we come on with you and thanks for having me on again Even though it's the same conversation as last last tweets out again all right so The next gen nascar is coming for the cup series. Are you hearing anything coming down the pike for you guys that there's a lot of unknowns with that right I would say that from a budget and realistic standpoint. The xfinity series right. Now it'd be kinda drive on some of the equipment that is Turnover i guess if you will from the cup series side right so so there are certain things that we but for the most part i would say you know. There's a lot of parts of pieces on the current generation of car that that will be able to adapt to the xfinity series so from a longevity standpoint from a budget standpoint. I would say you know the next two three four years out some equipment that you know it's going to be available a at the end of the season but comic side of the car. I think there's some things on it that we've asked hard the past the kind of look into and it hasn't he'd like a good opportunity without changing the whole parameters of the car and with doing that now. I think that there's going to be really interesting unique things that do car so i'm hopeful that it's going to be really good but i'm also excited to see kind of the growth and xfinity's here he's up. You know what equipment is going to be available out there for For with for sure absolutely with hendrick motorsports doing so well and you guys Sort of related to that shop. Does any of that kind of trickle down to you guys. That feeling that vibe that attack that that speed Unfortunately probably not as much as we'd like for you you know. One of the biggest things is that the bodies obviously on the cups used car lot different than the extent series. Most notably is the chassis height the suspension high so on the current cup car. They have no right roles whereas on the affinity theory side. We still have a right at comeback day. So we go through inspection. We have to start the race on whenever heights because the inspection whereas my cup side they go through inspection. They lower their cars way down and and get them. slammed onto the ground and completely changes the style of of driving. So you're able to do some things differently that i would call it. Ben average able to things differently with the series car so in that regard. There's a lot of things that they're able to do with their their suspension setup for example spring rates Within being lower. They're they're they're forced to run away different spring rate than what we would run on our car. Just because you know. We're traveling in a car down and we need to be a lot softer to be able to get to Get to the ground whereas they they tend to want to be a little bit more stiff and rigid and their car. This mower so functionality. Wise is probably a few things that that were able to take from that but for the most part We're trying to do our own thing. And and feeding off of a feeding off of their energy for sure though. Yeah exactly that was my next question. Is that that energy that surrounding the team right now. I mean they are just firing all cylinders pun intended. So that's gotta you guys up as well. Well you know going going to that As well you're part of part of their program is that that has been a huge increases. Their program right. They've done a fantastic job and hendrik injured shop. I've just optimizing the package that they're running On the cup series. I wouldn't environment or could yours far with that being said you know some of that. Some of that has trickled down in the series and nathan work. You really hard trying to make sure that we have the power and reliability that we can. I think that's a huge It never fails power. Usually needs no reliability. Right the more you up to power the more you cure reliability and and for us Their reliability silent things have been antastic because obviously can be power. But that's that's a big deal so that that is the one thing that you know. Those guys are up. And they're they're feeling it and they're they're carrying that momentum and is definitely trickling out. We are fine on all cylinders as well. So that makes it really. Does this your feel different. As the fans are are are slowly getting back to the race track. There's got to be a better vibe about it. Oh wave at arrive and you know we've had this conversation fans are fans are truly what this is all about it. They're they're the lifeblood of our sport. And i don't think any of us realize until you know middle of twenty twenty how much we would ever miss that until it wasn't there right. Yeah and i know there's been drivers in the past that have had Their scuffles. I would say with the media with fans right Not not wanting to go. Do appearances or not wanting to go sign on grass whatever it may be and i feel like through all of this are even those guys right even the ones that that wasn't their favorite part of what we did on on a weekend we We can't week out basis. They even realized that right. And we've all changed our approach. I think we've seen a lot of things. It definitely changed the good as far as that goes. And i just think that is raised here that we've all realized how important the fans are. No none of us want to go back to you and if you go racing i absolutely a couple more questions and part of our two part interview with just all you welcomed a new car into the family Congratulations thank you. You know we've We've kind of gone path of. I was pretty confident. We were going to have one child. Our oldest harper has been an absolute absolute blast. She's she's a great great kid. And i just i'm proud of. I'm proud of her right But we started. We're going to have a second child service about We'll only came into came into the world on the twenty four. The may and she's been a she's been absolute trooper rockstar little Little thing and and you know nice to have help from our. She's able to. She's older now. They want to help us out and and bus going and the little one is growing like crazy already really special and really really cool all right so looking ahead to this weekend We've heard drivers call. Pocono part road course part oval Where do you land on on the situation of a triangle shaped track. I love to be perfectly honest with the That'd be the guy that hired me to to go to dry for benecke After you wanna pocono in the series sell.

"A funny thing happens when you do well a nascar team you drive for ten to one to keep you around for a while. And that's what's happening with kyle larson. He just signed a contract extension through the twenty twenty three season to remain at hendrick motorsports and hendrick cars dot com is going to be the brand and the majority sponsor of the car Were thirty five race schedule. This is huge news. I mean he's still in the middle of his first year with the team. Granted he's doing really well and lighting the season on fire but Besides that that's that's the news with. Kyle

And and miss the tv work at all again working with dwi working when my working with larry or pit reporters but this year especially working with boy you he and i had a great rapport going into it and i knew he'd have fun but You that made it a tougher decision. I i really felt like the decision was all remained going into the season And and so you know. I don't think anything was going to change that here that that became Something that was a great transition for me to step out of driving and go to. It had a lot of similarities as driving with how you prepare. Go going over your notes working with the team and then when you get up there it's a live event so instinctively you're you're doing similar things that you would the driver just with a microphone and and Relying on your team so that was fun. I enjoyed it But like i said the end of the day the competition and and you're being arm-in-arm and kendrick is his really where I feel it old. Jeff gordon on racial on radio. The the question about the horsepower for the twenty twenty to be our zad. He goes into great detail here and doug normally does and we appreciate that. He says the twenty twenty to be ours. Ed's new engine is a two point. Four liter flat four producing two hundred and twenty eight horsepower right right ding. Dang seven thousand. Rpm red line along with one hundred eighty four pounds feet of torque at thirty seven hundred rpm those or increases of twenty-three horsepower and twenty eight pounds feet respectively over the outgoing model. Thank you doug for being so thorough. Appreciate that. I also wanted to know as we're certainly looking after When the covert of situation is starting to ease twenty-five percent ontario we. And i asked doug a said What's going on in alberta. And he was good report back and he said on july first. Alberta lifted all restrictions but left cities able to invoke local restrictions then on the fifth of july. The last remaining city calgary removed mandatory mask wearing so now he says there are no longer any cova restrictions except quarantining and health care scenario. So that is the situation. Thank you doug for bringing us up to date there and that is kind of where we are. And we're monitoring that as i said across the country because it is critical after being dark pretty much all of last summer With very few exceptions that we get back and get some gate and get some fans twenty five percent in ontario and a few promoters of a few little other attractions going to try and make some income. Because man you don't wanna see anybody not survive this and thank goodness starting to come out of this. "Ways and changing the sport changing the demographic of the sport right off the bat. I mean you know when danika came along I think we saw a lot more fino's in the audience and we saw a lot more little girls come to the racetrack with their dads and with their parents I think now. We're seeing a lot more hispanics a lot. More latinos come into the race track And that's good for the sport. That's good for joy. Lugano that's good for denny hamlin. That's good for the entire sports. So i think this move only solidifies their place in the sport and they're based to grow what they wanna do One of the things. That is interesting as i've spoken with justin marks. He is a sharp guy. So this kind of doesn't surprise me that he's made a big bold move like this no. It doesn't if you go back. And if we just go back to how they started this team and The the you know they just basically they embedded themselves with richard childress racing Even though it's it's track house racing They are not a partner. They are not they are. They are not a subsidiary of richard childress racing day embedded themselves their team there and they run it the way they want to run it but they use all the same stuff all the same technology everything all the way one hundred percent and nobody had done that. This is a totally different model. Totally different model had never been never been attempted and they have come out of the box. You've got three or four top five or top ten finishes. They've run in the top ten consistently not not getting the finishes. They won't run in the top ten consistently And they're good solid top fifteen team and they're they're vying for that last spot in the playoffs in the very very first year so i think that speaks volumes so for for him to make a move like that And then to back it up with a move like this. You've got to put him on your list of people to watch because he is changing the way the sport does business too And i think you'll see other people follow this road and this model in the future on how they get into the sport. Another huge headline recently is Jeff gordon hanging up headphones in the broadcast booth. And he's going to be the boss over there hendrick motorsports. I mean all kinds. There's a seismic shift here going on in the sport in terms of leadership. Yeah and listen. I think that's a huge positive also and we you know sadly sadly You know with the passing of ricky hendrick Then then the team itself who who's gonna run it who's going to run it some day And we look at rick and his late seventies and you know my dad turns eighty four. Today could his birthday and we look at the owners. We look at roger. Penske we look at joe gibbs. We look at jack rouse. We look at those guys. They're in their late seventies and early eighties. So this sport is is is basically owned run and controlled team wise By a bunch of older gentlemen have put their heart and so in their life into the sport. So who's gonna come along and do it after them. And i think jeff gordon falls into that category of somebody who's put their heart and show in life into this sport And falls right in line with rick upset at me and times before rick hendrick may May have bought the land hendrick motorsports but jeff. Gordon built a house That's for sure he. He established it as the premier place to be and in the long island. So it's only fitting that he's there you talk about. Justin marks We talk about denny hamlin. talking to team We talk about Colleague racing starting a new team. There is an influx of new blood and new ownership And obviously we've had the new drivers coming in for years and years and years. But i think this is the most positive positive things we've seen in the sport in a long time and i think jeff gordon will be What he did as a driver may pale in comparison to what in his vision for what he has for hendrick motorsports and what it wants to do. It's going to be exciting to to check that. Out kyle larson huge massive year. This year we knew he had a talent. You put him in equipment from hendrick motorsports and he is absolutely exploded this year. It's it's been fun to watch. I mean how many races is this gonna win at many as he he won't that's kind of the way it is you know and i hate to say that and it sounds slipping. But here's here's what happens. And i think i think this is human nature and a lot of ways Obviously he's in better equipment and then then where he was going to ask you and i don't. I don't mean that. These guys work any harder i just think he has access to more tools and two more things that make him better driver they can make him a better driver here and we know there's different levels of teams so that goes without saying and that is not a knock against canarsie racing at all that is just a fact of life but i think if we if you look at people just all across the board all across the board if you have something you love if you have something you have a passion for And it's taken away from you. It's taken away from you and you can't do it and you're not allowed to be a part of it or or are you lose something And it's sad and you you you you you long for that you think about that When you're given a second chance and that second biden apple ninety nine percent of the people come back and they're more. They're more dedicated to more focused. They wanna make it work. They had a shot. They lost their shot. They get a second chance. We see it in football with with quarterbacks and players you see it in basketball teams where a guy gets cut moved to a different place And then he excels at the second place and you say well what happened about the first place. He'd never lost it. He thought he was going to have it forever. And a lot of ways i think. That's part of kyle larson. He thought once he got the cop. I'm gonna be here a long time. and then it was taken away now that he has a second chance and it gets focused his dedication his desired win. is a lot more intense than what it was the first time. I think he appreciates the sport more. And that's why. I say he can win as many races as kyle. Larson wants to way as long as that car stays during he can win race. I can understand that for sure..

"With them. We see austin dillon. We see tyler rettig. We see eric jones. We see so many of these teams that are chevy based teams that are having great runs and having solid daniel schorr and track house race. And you see these guys. They're having just solid. And that's the chevy camp so you know we talk hendrick but it's chevy at the same time and again here. We see in some shots of race. Like i think that gives there especially with kyle recently but to your point it feels to me is if until you have somebody besides kyle busch winning and crystal real chris. Sale finishing second is impressive. But until you have somebody winning regularly it is still a hundred discussion. Look if we if we just sat down and look at if you just sit down over the last the last six races six or seven races and just look at stats of laps led how many times their cars have finished in the top five. How many times records finished in the top ten. How many laps they've led. How many quality passes you can go through all those stats. Okay but if you put them over here this is the table is going to cave in under the hendrick weight of what they done and this side's not over under everybody else nobody's been able to penetrate that on a consistent basis and that that for me is the big telltale side is they just do it week and week out and nobody even though you get to reveal that slides in there and run second even though you get around blaney or you get somebody will pop up in there. Oh yeah but third. Is we embarrassing. But fourth is whatever it may be. So they're still there. Those four drivers are capable win each and every way yet at hendrick motorsports right now no question. of course. A lot of discussion Let's talk to an expanding series driver. I think we've got austin syndrome. Both races at road america hill. Join us when we come back after the break here on nascar. American motor mounts..

"Out the top five. Watching the battle for six. Now under braking. Bowman is able to shut it down to about a car length on Chase Briscoe that Ford Chevy battle Now up to the gearbox on the accelerator under the bridge to six. Roman just stocking Chase Briscoe through turn number six. Briscoe can't get the power down as quickly as Bowman does, And that is nose to tail to turn Number seven, and he lets it drift wide. Coming off of turn number seven. Alex Bowman stating this tire trucks he'll look to drivers left. Year of the four Chase Briscoe trying to stick the nose in there, Brisco shuts the door. Briscoe gabs a gear he'll pull away by car lane. Now here comes Alex moment, once again gets a great run coming off of turn Number nine. He's staying stride for stride with Chase Briscoe all the way around the carousel off 10 staying right with him. But unable to make a move is Alex Bowman in this race for the sixth spot as the race leaders already making their way through the right hands turn number 11. It is chased Briscoe hanging onto the position. Alex Bowman, still within a car length a few more back to Kyle Larson. Here they come now making the downhill run coming back into Canada Corner. The top five already have left this end of the race track. Here's Chase Briscoe now Completes the pass back around Alex moment. That's the ongoing battle for the sixth position, working its way uphill here they come swinging their way around the left hander in turn number 13 Chase. Briscoe's got the advantage over Alex Bowman by only but about a car length as they go into the right hander in turn number 14 heavy braking zone. Bowman all over the back bumper of the rookie, Then you've got Buscher. And Byron as they hit the front straightaway. Chase Elliott beginning to stretch his lead out. It's measured now at 1.3 seconds over second place Kyle Busch. It shouldn't be a surprise to see Chase Elliott leading even though he started towards the back of the field today after not being able to get a qualifying lap in this morning due to misfortune as the caution flag came out, not once. Twice while he was on the track on a flying lap Chase Elliott so good on road courses. He's 15 of the last seven NASCAR Cup Series Road course races. His crew chief Alan Gustafson, leads all the active crew chiefs in the series with six road course winds. Take that a step further. Hendrick Motor Sports has nine or rather, they lead all folks with road course wins with Jeff Gordon with nine. Chase Elliott has six Tim Richmond, the late Tim Richmond three road course wins. Or Hendrick Motorsports, and for that to be, said Kyle Ricky, When you look at the schedule, things have got to be looking awfully good for Chase Elliott with seven road courses on the 2021 calendar most we have ever had here on the schedule, and there's still several coming up, including the rover Charlotte Motor Speedway. They will run the road course in just a couple of weeks time. At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. So a lot of turning both left and right this season. We've already had several races and Hendrick Motorsports has won most of them on the road courses. This season, and right now they're looking good right now toward the front of the field here at Road America As chase Elliott comes out of the carousel and continues to extend his lead, almost doubled the margin between himself and Kyle Busch from just a lap ago. Looking really good right now at the front of the field that Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Road America, obviously.

"Talk nascar about next year or any business decisions that were going on there without their owners. I realized that. Just where my true passion you allies. I love the sport. I love racing but competition and he'll being martyr with one of the best owners of ever be nascar that that's really what i was getting cited about looking. So here's my thought. My initial thought. I spend my thought for a while. Rick is not getting any younger so there needed to be some sort of transition in place you know if he retires or the worst happens or whatever that's a big organization with what is it like five hundred employees or whatever they need that stability and i think that's what this gives. Yeah yeah definitely does You have the face of the organization for for many years to come. And that's a that's what people want to in their job. They want to make sure that when they go to work every day. they know. There's a job there tomorrow no matter what happens So this is big. This is huge and Like i said it's communicating see. What fox does as well without Without him in the booth where they do they put in there. Maybe a right. Earn of larry mac. That'd be kind of cool. Maybe i know. Kevin harvick is kind of waiting in the wings. Kurt busch maybe yeah. Possibly i think both of them are definitely coming back this next season though. So you're gonna have a one year deal in there. We're going to find somebody now. Jeff gordon has had a steak and hendrick motorsports for a very long time. I mean this is that that part is not new. This title is new and him. Leaving fox is new. And he's going to be just his hands are going to be in everything now at hendrick motorsports and i'm guessing he's going to be the guy the point man at the track every week. Starting i guess now. Yeah yeah i mean. That's that's what i think would be the case. So this is this big It's going to be interesting so we'll start seeing more of him Immigration and like in just shots around pit road and stuff like that. It'll be kind of interesting. Yeah well i mean. He's jeff gordon. He is the face of the sport. He has been for many many years and for him to remain as a big time. Player is sport. This is this is awesome ball and the cool thing is when you start looking at all the ownership in the sport that were having. Currently you've got michael jordan in there with denny hamlin kohner. Now you've got jeff. Gordon is looking like he's taking out a pretty big role there hendrick motorsports. So that looks pretty cool. junior motorsports talking about going to the cup series if they can make that happen. You've got dell junior's car owner you've got just a market and there with pit bull and now time i put in tony robbins as part of the team as well so i mean there's a lot of big names And big celebrities. That are that are getting to be a part of the sport. Mayweather has been talking about it for years. floyd mayweather. So there's there's a lot of different things that could be happening here. But we're having a lot of celebrity status coming into the sport as far as car owner goes. Now you mentioned just marks at anything happened this week with him. I don't think so. Nothing major right. I remember a text. I sent you of. Wow what was that about. Oh yes. Wow i forgot. You're right so did happen right. Of.

"We will at back to the reilly. Auto parts bit reporters along allen cavanna from the positive regression. Podcast adam stern from the sports business journal. Mcmillan glad to have you with us. A couple of guys named gordon as i said in the news this week. First of all alan jeff gordon. I don't think it's a big surprise that it was announced He is going to be leaving fox. After this season. I mean the fox main part of their season basically over. But we've all known he was in line to really kind of take over things at hendrick motorsports and he's going to be basically the number to guide hendrick under rick and so we hate to see him leave the booth but we certainly understand his duties at hendrick and he's kind of the man going forward right. Yeah i mean you knew it was coming at some point. I didn't think it would be this quick. And i think it's just a loss for a lot of people who enjoyed the first half of the season because i think the pair duo bringing clint boyer in kind of may jeff gordon a better broadcaster. Only in that had another driver to talk to a contemporary. And clint boyer could be the show. While jeff gordon could be the ninety three race four-time champion right ninety three race winner. Four time champion and kind of take some of the pressure off of being the entertainment as well right. It was a good balance with the three of them. So i thought. Jeff gordon shine especially this year and we only got one year of it so that part was unfortunate but i think he likes the direction of team hendrick right now and and the four young championship. Were they drivers. So i think he was in a good winning position no matter what he picked as you look at it to adam. Your thoughts i on on gordon stepping away from the booth and maybe your feelings or what. You're hearing rumblings of how they make fill that spot or do they think allen's exactly right from the perspective of you know we ended up doing what five six years i mean. Obviously when when you look at guys transitioning from broadcasts from from their playing days broadcasting. Sometimes you envision boy this be year career thirty year rear. So maybe this was a little bit quicker than than some people thought it would be on at the same time. If you remember back you know. He retired after fifteen. He signed a three year. Deal from sixteen to eighteen with fox was his original deal. He looked at leaving aftermath original deal and then he ended up signing the extension nineteen through twenty one this year and You know to own. I don't know if it's because their performance. Well i tend to think it actually would have happened regardless. And maybe if they were not running well might even had to happen quicker So i think this was really coming. I think you know he didn't talk about as much. But i think even on top just being on the team side. He's probably not going to have to travel quite as much Things like that now. Because i'm sure he'll still be at the race track a lot but it will be quite as Ours half of the year when he literally or to be there every week and then obviously he just has us competitive juices that he wants to be involved with the team side. I think will still be interesting to see. There was some talk that this was kind of revealed as the succession plan. But it really wasn't because in my opinion a lease because we actually really don't know for example. You know marshall carlson. That's team president. Is rick hendrick son-in-law so who really will run handwrite one hundred percent long term. I don't know exactly. And i don't know of anyone knows that this is really made that public. It just said jeff. Gordon is taking on a new role as vice chairman. He's going to be really leading things on a day to day perspective alongside. Rick is not going away yet And so i think it really really interesting how it plays out clearly. There's a big move for jeff and I just think as far as who has replaceable. Be i haven't heard yet. Obviously i've got a couple of natural in-house replacements Like jamie mcmurray are going back to larry mcreynolds so clearly you would think they start there But can they go. Try and find a home. Run my understanding. Is they've been trying to find home runs. But i don't know if those hormones are going to happen and You look at guys who already at different networks or you look at a guy like heaven. Aric who had been rumored you know to wanna go to the booth. And she'd been inside that barry long essentially with s jar mean. His deal is up on twenty three. I don't think he's going anywhere. So i think they might have to look in house eventually if they wanna keep remem- booth but We'll have to see exactly what the decision is. As i have not heard or understood yet say how it plays out alan good. No i mean it's how it's impossible to replace ninety three wins and four championships. The face of the sport for for well more than a decade. That is going to be a heavy lift to replace that. I don't envy the executives at fox. Obviously who. I worked with back in the day but How do you replace the resume of jeff gordon. The name recognition of jeff gordon. That is going to be tough. And i don't envy who has to come in and sort of fill that void because ultimately the broadcasting side of it will win out but at initially no one's going to have a comparable resume. So maybe you start there and just say look. We're there's no way we're going to compare resumes here but we'll bring in the best possible. Broadcasters that's what has to happen for television makes a lot of sense. Let's talk about the other guy named gordon and get your thoughts on this adam as todd. Gordon has announced that he's going to retire at the end of the year championship winning crew. Chief joy lugano now the crew. Cheaper ryan blaney. I'm almost wondering adam if this is the beginning of may i'm not gonna say a mass exodus for crew chiefs but if this is the beginning of something we're going to see a few more of these before the end of the year especially with this new car coming on online next year. I mean these guys are going to have to throw out all the books they've got because they're going to be useless after this year and for guys have been around for a while. They made us be going this. This is a good time to step away. Definitely and when you look at what todd gore and said you know he also noted that the pandemic played into just from the perspective of a gave him new perspective And so. I think obviously it is a big time of transition. The obviously we've had a big transition as as a world and as a country but certainly you're right. Obviously next year is a big year started with the next generation car. I think obviously there's two ways to look at it. You know some guys might be looking at is the perfect time to go away. There might be some other guys like occurred bush for example. If you talk about drivers crew chiefs her saying i might actually stick around for another year or two and see how this new car go. So i'm not sure yet. I think you might be right that we could see that trend. But i just don't know we'll have to see how plays out and what to see where. Todd gordon goes. You didn't really say what he was doing So is he going to find another role in the or elsewhere outside of team penske or is he. Getting outside of altogether will be interesting to see. Yeah it really isn't an allen under that. You've you've worked with todd gordon over the class guy always very open to talking to you and I visit. I always thought one of the great guys to talk to but i certainly understand when you start talking about family and spending more time at home. The hours these crew chiefs put in on the cup level is just unbelievable. Oh yeah and we heard him to you know in his interviews this week. He talked about his daughters. I think he sees his family his parents a lot at the track. But you know to spend time with them away from the track is all a positive thing and look he's he's a daytona five hundred winning championship pointing many race winning crew chief. That's hard to replace. And it's going to be a big deal. A penny think of all the changes. We obviously the reports. Brad kozlowski leaving austin syndrich coming over. Now you need..

"From your mistakes ability to help one another out and the two most important things that i use. I have these little signs. I puerto around now and then there in the dining room now at either end of the cabinet one is stay humble and the other one besides stay on. Bill is due guide. And if they're kind of one another and their humble and they don't get too big ed or too small ahead keep an even even medium. It works out really well and everybody pretty much on the same page. Try to keep everybody in this same groove in other words i try really hard to Treat everybody the same. It seems like when this became such a big thing. And i mean when race team started making it more known in the sport that they were recruiting athletes and everybody was coming out of college. It seemed like at first. It was such an odd concept but now it has to be something to wear if you want to succeed. That's the way to go. These pit crews in these team members have to be athletes they have to have that mindset. They have to have that body and something like that. That mentality and be ready to go right. It would be hard for these teams not to have that. That's so true it's incredibly true. You can have all the talent in the world if you don't have the right attitude and you can't be coached if you're uncomfortable or semi on cultural you're gonna weed yourself right out in the competition. Here is incredible. We have as far as i can tell We have at least two minicamp a year with recruits being taken from there and brought into the system. And you have to keep on your toes at all times here to keep your position in your job that kinda in my opinion my own humble opinion is what makes our pit crew so successful but it's the competition and if you don't have the mindset for your we'd yourself right out so take me through the transition gene of going from mlb in the yankees for forty nine years to moving north carolina. You're a race fan but now you're working in a completely different sport. What was the transition like. Was it easy did you enjoy it. Or there's some hard times at first. Did you question yourself. What was it a. I like when you made this transition to be honest with you i. It was miserable. I really wanted to come here. And i really wanted to live here. Once i got here and looked around. I thought boy this is beautiful. We here in north carolina have all four seasons. But they're not drastic. They're perfectly great and i loved it. I love it. Still do but i year year and a half almost two years. It was difficult. Because i i wouldn't watch any of the baseball games. I missed my team very much. Some of the players were still there. Obviously a lot of them were still there now. There's only one or two but it's been ten years but it was very very difficult. I i missed it. Horrifically and then When ability to get back into something else especially something. I love to which was raising it. Just like a dream come true. It worked out incredibly. These people. here are amazing and they're appreciative and there's not a whole lot of egos stuff going around here. It's pretty pretty even keeled and cool and they look out for one another we frankly would be able to pinch myself at night to work all my life..

"Of that stuff in and i use them old school mythology for example. I'll make several different kinds of comments out of all kinds of ingredients and We call one green flag one. Go go go one one more to go one more checkered flag. And then the real hot hot stuff is championships. So we named them all like stuff like that and the guys like it they enjoy it and in the cold weather they go with the hot warm weather go with the cool athletes. Of course no the importance of taking care of themselves again race teams now are recruiting guys out of college or wherever it may be. They know they have that specific mindset of taking care of themselves but in your role what are you looking out for. What are maybe the biggest things that you're keeping an eye on. Or that are taking care of for these athletes here at hendrick motorsports a couple of things. Basically that i've kind of undertaken and i work with the staff training staff as far as conditioning and strength goes in one of them or two of them are hydration and nutrition. We have nutritionist. Now which is really great. Young lady does a wonderful job but we have a west coast trip and we have a texas trip. We have a south florida trip or two and sometimes they don't realize how warm it is and how much the hydrate walk around and hydrate in the plane and stuff like that how to keep themselves physically fit and how to make sure that they're nutritionists correct and if they're gone for two or three days at a time they don't overindulge in the alcohol the night before at ain't good and believe me that is not good and to avoid dehydrate duration and make sure they get obviously get proper rest and sleep so those kinds of things we kinda dwell on a lot and we make sure that they know that because we teach them about it we tell them about it and once every couple of weeks i'll do a little bit of a one page poster and posted around with the margin ends on their especially fun right now because we're doing so well yeah that's always fun. Do you travel much gene with the team or do you stay primarily here at the shop. I don't go west of the mississippi the my age and everything like that but Up until this well actually up until cogut I did travel at hardcore traveled. And they they appreciate it right now. That's on hold and we'll see what happens down the road and the next year to locally although but generally i do travel but right now it's on hold because of the violence locations right. What makes a great athlete. Or what makes an or someone that you enjoy working with. If that makes sense it makes a lot of sense and learn this in baseball many many many years ago and i'm talking a long time ago. These guys are pretty much pretty close when it comes. Strength flexibility endurance. Those kinda things balanced officers at up to athleticism but it's a mindset that really helps the most the ability to learn.

Sizing up Kyle Larson's Extraordinary Run

"Want to talk about. Kyle larson in this role that this guy is on. You worked with jeff. Gordon you compete against jeff gordon. The nine hundred ninety eight and this is what this reminds me of right now. That kyle larson has six consecutive races. First or second place finishes four victories. Three points races put in perspective australia. Steve what this role means because to me. It feels a lot like jeff. Gordon circa one thousand nine hundred. Well listen. so he's driving premier equipment. The hendra motorsports car seem to have the most speed in the field but the counter that is driving that against three other premier drivers right so it's easy to say it's got the fastest stuff yet but you to chase elliott william byron and alex bone to do it and oh by the way he did he drove around chase elliott with one of the most masterful gutsy all star race tight moves driving to the outside quarter panel a third lane. We had yet to see in ninety laps. So the move for the all star race was outstanding. I think kyle. I think this is the kyle larson. We all thought was out there. You can only decided but he wins in everything. He's so much talent we didn't know if it was his preparation holding him back if it was asked if it was his youth if it was his lack of mentor sh we didn't know we'll never know because it kind of all the jumbled up reset but now he's an organization with a lot of leadership. Jeff gordon you mentioned it stein in the fox booth what he's still has a role andrew motorsports rick hendrix there. Chad can houses there. We asked outs blue being us out. Hey how're the post like you said you ever met chad kind of. There's a lot of leadership around him and a lot of confidence and a lot of talent and driving great equipment and i think that's what you're seeing right the combination of the three two minutes amount of confidence. And you know we said it on our preview show. You and i both cholera and watching. Because you take that much talent with that much motivation. The timing of hendrick motorsports and what they're doing communist chevrolet and where they are in the grand scheme of things. You got this recipe for success. Now he's doing it against the defending champion on. His team is the defending champion of our series. And he's taking the fight to him

"Win about a jeff you talk about running the off of it before. I think the things that i saw from larson yesterday were that he could carry that speed. That you're talking an it you need not to get past or to overtake someone and not hurt. The car and hurt the tires is mud so a lot. Different road racer. I saw in colorado arson yesterday. That was one of the best performances because the big white honest. I think myself. Clint boyer and jeff gordon. On the telecast yesterday and maybe some others wondered what their strategy was whenever they were pitting staying out at different times than everybody else. And i guess they just they had the. Ma'am the car to get it done. Did make any difference. You're just gonna keep the best that they could and that is a lot of fun as a driver and you know when you have back to that horsepower. Thing someone speaking from experience of having more horsepower than others and being able to take advantage you can drive race cars a lot differently whenever you have that. I had that robert gates racing for a long time and a wonderful feeling to know that you have that in the bank and it allows you not to abuse your race car lot. And i think that we're seeing larson saying how hard is it the sweet stages and go get the win at a road course like what are. What are the challenges. The winning those stage points. Along the way i just mentioned in the fact that you can have all these different strategies playing out on a road course and still win all the stages and the race. That's a rare thing because normally thanks get so mixed up there not only that but when you go back and you look at hendrick motorsports i know. William byron had gotten a wreck not.

So i want to talk about the win but i wanna talk about the significance of two sixty nine. Getting that record breaking win for mr hinder. What that meant to you and kyle to be able to pull that off. Yeah it was a special day special win. Of course. I think race was relieved that it happened. Because he knew how well are companies performing right that we re edit potential to do it and of course you know all the individual teams were certainly gunning to do it But it's really cool to energy that we have entertainers tra- now. Hendrick Motorsports Nears Petty Win Record After 1-2-3-4 Result

"Hendrick motorsports the first one two three four finish for hendrick in its team history. Only the fourth time in cup history. That's been done in the first and the cup series since rosh benway racing team. You have some knowledge of two thousand five at the season finale at homestead miami speedway so just to give you a little context henrik has only been a four car team since two thousand and four so i one two three four finishing essentially seventeen years. I that they've been able to do that but you know what's your first reaction to that. When you hear the hendrick motorsports for the first time ever in what thirty. Seven years of history has a one two three four finish. Well i think about is two years ago when we were talking about. What's wrong with hendrick right. And we we. We had this expectation level of hendrik. That's pretty high. We expect to see them contending for championships winning the lottery to me to me. In the era that i raced in hendrick was the most dominant team out there and that faded faded over time and it was. They didn't jump right back into it. They had to work themselves back into it. And now here they are and they also invested you. Think about what they did. They invested in a lot of youth right so took brought a lot of young drivers and that has cultivated into a very young team with a lot of winners on it heading into right direction. This is the opposite of what we were talking about. Two years ago. I think hendrick motorsports is repositioning themselves to be dominant force. They won the championship last year. We chase elliott now chase elliott. That hasn't wanna raise this year and alex bowman's want to i know chase elliott fans. Think well that's not good but it is good if the guy that won championship you last year is the guy. That's not winning this year and everybody else has stepped it up. That's a good thing. Now they've chase elliott rezoning twentieth every weekend. That what that's not chase elliott's running okay. He's not been winning expecting to do. But but that's a good problem for a team to have. It's almost impossible to have all four clicking. You know what i mean. It's really really difficult. But i just i just i think a reversal of where we were two years ago. That's the first thing that pops in my brain

"Alex Bowman Hendrick motorsports back on the show. Alex welcome back the NASCAR live. Yeah thanks for having me. So you're a winner at Talladega at least on the virtual Sunday afternoon. I liked your tweet after the checkered flag that you don't understand how this could happen. Have you had a chance to process it? And what indeed did happen. Yeah I'm I'm pretty surprised I think a lot of other people are pretty surprised as well I have definitely been on the not taking this super serious side of things when it comes die racing so To to get a win on their with is surprising for me for sure. I Iran one practice race for like twenty five laps all week and Called it good and and Kinda Senate on Sunday so Cloud to get hundred motorsports and other win. I think William is much more talented than I am when it comes to the virtual thing and Just you know. Glad to get US three in a row but Had A lot of fun like I said. I'm confused on on how happened. I guess it got Super Lucky but ZAC that it worked out so how much I rarely experience do. You Have D. Even have a chance to win. Things were in regular life have a chance to do that or is it just one of the things that you've hopped on board with through the stoppage that we've been going through. Yeah you know once we. I think when dirt came out on IRA saying. I completely stopped running the pavement. I racing stuff So it's I'm definitely not a guy with a bunch of experience and You know you look guys like William that that have a big background in it and and have done quite a bit I'm definitely on the opposite side of that spectrum. Well it didn't look that way on Sunday. Congratulations it was a lot of fun to watch. It was as intense as it normally is. I'm sure that from from your perspective. It is a lot different in simulation then real life.

Blaney, Keselowski, Logano detail Roger Penske's Hall of Fame pursuit of perfection

"You would be hard pressed to find anyone more respected in the garage area than Roger Penske says competitor and friend Rick Hendrick of Hendrick motorsports. As one of my best friends, I have nothing but respect for him what he's accomplished is unbelievable role. It's unbelievable to see someone that can win and Formula one and and open wheel and and went all the championships. And do the things he thought I don't know how he doesn't. He's a perfectionist. Then as again, I I admire him in. Poll them in the high regard the motor racing network. Congratulates the newest member of the NASCAR hall of fame Roger Penske. All three of Roger Penske's Cup series drivers drove to victory lane in two thousand eighteen and one of those drove to a championship Joey Logano in its tenth full time season in the Cup series is going to win the two thousand eighteen zero man, I honestly, I I would have thought he'd been inducted into the hall of fame along before this after seeing what he's given to our sport into our community. You know, I think it's one of the best kept secrets in our sport. Sometimes you forget when you watch these videos of all the race ones. You forget that he built a lottery strikes. You forget that you know, his whole businesses built them on racing. You know, he's here we had our fiftieth anniversary of NBN racing years ago. Now, you know, so what a great honor for him to to be able to to be inducted into. You know, what is the biggest award? You can get in our sports. So I'm so excited to be there. Into watch it and to be part of that. And it couldn't come at a better time after you win a championship. And then you cap it off with being inducted into the NASCAR hall of famers is that it's well deserved for a man that has a big heart. But also won't you won't ever.
