Bowman edges Larson in OT to win NASCAR race at Las Vegas
"The last two over time lapse a side by side do between Hendrick teammates Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson won by Bowman by about two car lengths I was either going to sticker it wasn't so glad that its stock in I think he must got loose outside of me and kind of watch at the race track and we're able to get it there so definitely nerve wracking but that's what we get paid to do those two got to the front for overtime by gambling on two tire stops what a caution came out with two laps to go that caution ended what had been I've nearly twenty lap battle between Gibbs teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex junior for Bowman it's his first win at Las Vegas and seventh career win Brett McMillan Las Vegas

"I'm rebecca share and welcome to circle round. Were storytime happens all the time. Today our story is called the laws of nature versions of this folktales come from estonia and finland in europe. Some really great people came together to bring you our adaptation of this tale including mo- raka correspondent for cbs. sunday morning and host. And creator of the cooking. Channel's my grandmother's ravioli. You public radio fans will recognize though from the npr. Weekly news quiz. Wait wait. don't tell me so. Circle around everyone for the laws of nature long ago in a peaceful country far up north there lived a farmer named hendrik all day. Long hendrick kept busy plowing and planting his fields. Then as the sun went down he pulled his wagon into the forest where he gathered fallen tree branches for firewood so that his farmhouse would stay warm and snug all night long. This routine went on for years and years. Plowing planting gathering would plowing planting gathering wood and eventually hendrick grew tired of it hoke. Something's got to change after working hard in the fields all day. The last thing i want to do is go to the forest and gather would picking branches piece by piece is downright exhausting. You know what. I'll make things easier for myself and simply pick a tree and shop it down that way. I'll have all the would i need in. One fell swoop energized by his new idea. Hendrick grabs his shiny acts from the tool shed and bounded into the forest. All righty now just have to choose which treat a chop down. Let's see about that. One hundred walked over to a cherry tree. It's delicate blossoms looked like tiny pink stars. Hendrick raised his accent ended at the cherry trees brown horizontally striped truck. But just as he was about to give the axe. A good swing stub don't choppy to hone hendrick froze what you have a voice i do and i'm using that voice to beg you. Good sir. please don't chop me down every year. My delicate pink blossoms transform into plump red cherries that are so delicious to eat. The animals of the forest love them and humans do too. Surely you've devoured at least one scrumptious cherry pie in your time hendrix smiled. He had devoured many scrumptious cherry pies in his time. His grandmother's had been specially good. You'll right cherry tree. And i'm sorry i won't shop you down. But as hendrix stepped away from the cherry tree. He felt the temperature dropping. If he didn't bring home some firewood it would be a long cold night in his farmhouse. Okay so if. I don't shop down the cherry tree. Which tree will i chop down. Let's see how about that. One hendrix stroke over to an oak tree. It's gray colored. Bark rippled with grooves and ridges hendrick raised his axe and aimed at the oak trees. Wide-scale trunk but just as he was about to give the axe a good swing weight. Stop don't chop me down hendrix. Jaw dropped open. What you can talk. I can talk. And i implore you good sir. Please don't shut me down. See how my acorns are still so small and bright green. They're not yet ripe and ready for planting not only that but think of all the animals that eat my acorns deer squirrels chipmunks birds without the oaktree. How would those animals survive hendrick nodded. He had often seeing the creatures of the forest nibbling on the oak trees. Acorns your right oak tree. And i'm sorry i won't shop you down over the next hour. Hendrick went from tree to tree raising his accent readying it for a good swing but each time he did. We stop jolt trump me down. The trees would cry out and tell hendrick why he should let them live the maple tree. I sat makes the most delicious sugar and syrup. Pancakes just aren't pancakes with me. The pine tree. I'm the only tree that stays green all year without me. The forest would look all dead and brown. Come winter the aspen tree. I provide so much shade. And i hold so much water. So if a forest fire breaks out. I provide a natural barrier as hendrick listened to each one explain its purpose and function is heart surged with pity my goodness these trees have really opened my eyes. Each one is so important so special. Who am i to take my ax and chop them down. I'll just do what i've always done and collect their fallen branches for firewood. But just as hendrix stooped down to pick up some sticks. He was stopped. Well done hendrick by another voice we would now who's talking to me is it another tree. Hendrix swivelled his head this way and that suddenly from behind a bush. He saw a small sprightly woman. Leap out the woman was no taller than hendrix acts. But her long white hair fell all the way to the forest floor. Oh you look startled. Hendrick i didn't mean to frighten. Hundred blinked his eyes. Who are you and what do you mean. well done. Excellent questions hendrick. Excellent questions indeed. To answer the i i am woods spirit. The trees are my children my treasures which brings us to your second question. I say well done because you listened to my children hendrick. You paid attention. You heard them out as they explained their purpose their importance. And you spare their lives and for that you will be rewarded. Hendrick provided you follow one rule..

Kyle Larson Lands Extension, Full Sponsorship Through 2023
"A funny thing happens when you do well a nascar team you drive for ten to one to keep you around for a while. And that's what's happening with kyle larson. He just signed a contract extension through the twenty twenty three season to remain at hendrick motorsports and hendrick cars dot com is going to be the brand and the majority sponsor of the car Were thirty five race schedule. This is huge news. I mean he's still in the middle of his first year with the team. Granted he's doing really well and lighting the season on fire but Besides that that's that's the news with. Kyle

As the new vice chairman of the company official at the turn of the new year. So here's part two of our re. Ask questions for jeff. Gordon back with us as we said on race. Line radio jeff. Do you think you're going to sit back. And and miss the tv work at all again working with dwi working when my working with larry or pit reporters but this year especially working with boy you he and i had a great rapport going into it and i knew he'd have fun but You that made it a tougher decision. I i really felt like the decision was all remained going into the season And and so you know. I don't think anything was going to change that here that that became Something that was a great transition for me to step out of driving and go to. It had a lot of similarities as driving with how you prepare. Go going over your notes working with the team and then when you get up there it's a live event so instinctively you're you're doing similar things that you would the driver just with a microphone and and Relying on your team so that was fun. I enjoyed it But like i said the end of the day the competition and and you're being arm-in-arm and kendrick is his really where I feel it old. Jeff gordon on racial on radio. The new vice chairman of hendrick motorsports. You know a lot of your new job at hendrick will be building and nurturing existing relationships right. I mean you know you. Just as an example part of adamy you and elliot larson bowman byron mean among other things. There's a dirt track route there that runs through all of you right.

"I love racing but the competition and he'll being partner with one of the best owners that there ever be nassar that that's really what i was getting sided about. It's a multifaceted position. Obviously jeff what do you think. Task one is going to be with this. The new position at hendrick. Well luckily right. Now we're we're in a great position in it's about maintaining we'll be currently half but that all got started so many years ago before i even got the hendrick motorsports with wreck and in the culture that need creates he'll how he treats me and how he finds talent and nurture side and and of course right. Now we've learned a lot about power. Teams are working together more than they ever have before. We're seeing the the success because of that self right now it's about maintaining it but As we move forward is just continue to look at the business model. We try to understand. the on how we take care of our current partners in character those relationships and make sure that they're excited about nascar and motorsports. They certainly are right now. also what new partners. Then we look at and bring in. I gotta say this coming into this race track today. Got me very very excited again. This reminds me of the older days. Or you know that period of time that we all talk about when the scorpions was super hot. That certainly makes it easier to go look at at what would in the future sport and of course right now a lot of attention besides this year In trying to keep that going this year this next gen lot of attention is put on how we raise the aware. Where do we put our efforts for next jim to try to maintain some kind of competitive advantage. That's going to get cut down dramatically. But we're gonna be out there racing at a high level and we just wanna make sure we're doing the.

Bowman Zips Past Larson After Late Flat and Wins at Pocono

It's down. He's going to go into the wall, Kyle Larson of the war Bowman's going to get by him a flat tire for Kyle Larson. And now Alex Bowman is going to win it. Pocono. Unbelievable. That was the call on NBC sports This afternoon. Larson finishes ninth, crossing the finish line with sparks flying out from underneath that number five. Five car. His teammate Alex Bowman gets the win instead. Although Larson couldn't get his fourth straight win, Rick Hendrick's cars continue their streak that is the sixth straight win for Hendrick Motorsports. They have not lost a NASCAR race. "Syndrich will now go to the too and that keeps Many these job in the twenty one. Yeah let's see he's all in favor of this. Yeah i think everyone everyone kind of is happy and then ryan newman gets to go do whatever he wants to do. You can go to s rx. Yeah yeah no. I don't see a downside here Well i mean the only potential downside is that break laskey you know goes from a team. He won a championship with and has raised the vast majority of his career with to one that is a bit more uncertain and says performance is probably going to go down next year. But i don't even know how much i mean with this new car and everything and that's just if it's a new car then we're everyone's back to zero and you gotta figure too when you look at the. The big winners here has to be ford. He stays in a ford car. Yeah he doesn't go off somewhere else. Goes doesn't go back to chevy where he started with Something where now he is in that blue oval camp for the long term. I think manufacturer you like to keep that and then that that kind of you gotta figure if they shift a lot of their resources or rows. Which i don't think they've had in a while or at least Ahead as a attention for them because it's always been stewart haas than penske and then rouse and then to an extent you gotta figure rousers right there with front row motorsports in terms of how they get their attention from the manufacturer. But i think overall this is good for everybody involved It it gives kazlauskas kind of a foot in the door in terms of what it looks like to have ownership run your own team if he wants to revitalize his kids laskey racing decade or so down the line so i mean it. It's i think it's good for everyone. Especially if ryan newman's unsure if he wants to come back. Yeah and i agree. That four wins out here because not only they keep lasky but if brad coming into rally does something similar to what tony stewart did coming into Then it gets ford more competitive to more competitive cars on the grid and And that's something that row hasn't been really longtime is seriously competitive for race wins and for championships and And i mean we talked about it. When the initial rumors came out jack rushing getting a younger and he's a little worse for wear man. I mean he's devastated. Put away with a few times Sometimes literally and So to bring in a younger person to be involved in the management of the team and somebody who ran his own team in the truck series and they were successful You know this could be huge for ralph really big for ford and yeah for kazlauskas. You know maybe. He takes a minor step back and performance. Maybe doesn't next year but one way or the other. I think he'll come out on the better end of this In terms of his personal performance and what it leads to in terms of ownership and running rash Racing down the line and penske isn't really that her by because because they have austin syndrich. Yeah exactly and you look at fenway to. They probably want a racing guy in there as well wants Jack routes finally decided to step away. Yeah for sure and from that and we'll come back to the other story that You want to talk about in a second but from there. Let's talk about a kind of related story that we got confirmation. That jeff gordon is going to leave. Talks to run hendrick motorsports or prepare to run. Hendrick motorsports is going to be in this. The second in command next to rick hendrick. Same thing here you know. I mean just like brag. His laskey brings somebody younger with more race experience into a team that has in aging owner. It's the same exact situation. I mean the success level is different. Obviously right now. And it's super super important for hendrick motorsports because they are such a huge organization. Both you know for the sport financially that they have somebody who really understands what they're doing and how a team should be run running it and jeff. Gordon provides perfect opportunity. But unlike brad keselowski. He doesn't have that day to day operation ownership type of thing. Yes he's involved was involved in. The forty eight car is involved in the forty eight car. But rick hendrick was running the show so i think he needs time to ramp up and it makes no sense if this is going to be his future gig. It makes no sense for him to continue messing around in the in the broadcast booth. Bummer because i think he's good When there's so much at stake with hendrick motorsports and they can get him up to speed right now. When like we were mentioning earlier they have four incredibly young drivers who are all incredibly talented and capable of winning races and capable of winning championships. You start right now. You get those guys coming up through the system. Working with jeff gordon primarily and then the whole operation is now solidified for the next fifteen years. No problem. yeah. I mean you gotta get him out of the booth if this is the thing if this is the end goal anyway. Why not do it now. Why why. why wait. Why pussyfoot around it just get it done in the long scheming and like you said like he he did have some kind of hand in the forty eight but at the same time. It's not the same as running. All four teams right and nine to appeal sponsors here there and everywhere so i think it's a good move. I think now is just the time to get my joy out of the booth and just completely revamped xactly. Let's finish the job. Finish what we started everybody. Yeah exactly so adamant. There is available now gadhafi. It is going to be interesting to see what they do in the booth weather it. They add somebody with a boyer. Or whether it's just gonna be boyer or how that's all going to work. I think it's too bad booth Fine all things considered. I think that's perfectly fine. Especially when you re larry mac on remote to throw to. I think it's fine to have just boyer and someone else up. Their boy has the The ability to develop into like. Benny parsons type of person. Kind of look goofy. Funny you know. Load school as good insight. Yeah yeah still still still still relevant because he just came off the tracks so yeah You know like. I said i thought that that jeff did a good job but and and i think he helps because appeals to a wider audience. Outside of just you know the south. Because he doesn't had the accent. But i mean i can totally see. I mean it totally makes sense for him to do this. We also from kansas. So i think that are missouri so that was too early in the middle of nowhere yeah And then a. What was the other story. That i missed because i know something else. Ms tally gracing finally announced their program. Oh i thought put that down. No i guess. I didn't okay. Justin haley will be driving full time in the cup series on and they acquired to charters what how right so kelly will also have their expanding program which will have aj dinger running full-time And then he will have a part time nascar cup Venture as well does not say who they got the charters from interesting how they dissolved or how they how they happen but they now have The the good ole. Oh spire still tube. It's three charters to colleague. Wow well that's good. Yep so they have. So they'll have the two the two full-time deals yeah they'll have So spiral continue to have the number seven and and that may be the seventy seven just.

"Towards becca after everyone came back from the break they were running a pretty well to start with him in priests but then just kinda fell off his back into the middle position so a nice showing especially on a track. That's not a superspeedway track. And then daniel suarez man third top ten of the year. He finished seventh in this one but his he's brought his average finish down three spots in the past couple of races his average finish on the year is almost nineteen so it's almost four spots here's average finishing the past five races fifteen point two so he. They're the team is steadily improving. And i did not look need to look into standing here and see where he and bubba are with their new teams. All right so he now is actually ahead of bubba by sixteen points so track houses twenty first and twenty three eleven twenty second so both those teams trying to hang in there trying to get inside the top twenty right now. Yeah and i mean you look at what happens with With sores in just the competence of this team l. They've actually made very big waves in this and it's really good to see because again. They're a team. That wasn't supposed to do much. And they're you know they're getting into it now. They're getting on it and they're even think about second team for next year so there's a lot of good things building with justin markson and everybody over there so it's kind of. It's it's a nice thing to see overall now and you know like i said on the last episode of the one before that i kind of given up on the idea that daniel suarez could be successful in the cup series and then this team man i mean they. They're like to the grindstone. They're they're working hard. That's great to see Because you know that twenty. Three eleven is going to get better Steadily over time. And if they get better over time as well that the means like two new teams coming in really mean it and seeing some success as opposed to just renting their cars out like you know we see rick ware and spire and all those guys do and they'll get to another new team which you don't even have one here. Do i not the announcement for tomorrow. for next year. Oh oh well. We'll talk about that in a moment. Yeah but i also wanna get back just just end with dinosaur as you gotta wonder how much immensely he's like. Well this could be my last chance. I have to do something here. Or else i screwed for the rest of my career and i gotta go back to regional areas down south so i think that he has a motivation to prove to himself that he can run up here After being kind of you know kneecapped. I would have to say new captain hamstrung in previous places. Yeah yeah because he said some big time rides and And then got unceremoniously booted for you know younger driver a driver that brought better sponsorship with them so yeah no i agree with you. That there's probably a little extra motivation there if not to save his career in the cup series At least to prove to those other teams that yeah. I can still. I can still race you to give me more of a chance. And then christopher bell finished ninth obviously as a win this year but it was his first top ten in eighth ray. Eight races He had a fourth back in richmond. So finally getting background. And that's like the whole stewart. Haas thing man. I mean they. They just have not been on the ball this year. Maybe they're going to step up and moving to do the reverse of hendricken step up in the playoffs and had a tough time This entire weekend too. I mean kyle. Busch fell back. After he was up to the front he fell back. A little climbed up to eleven christabel didn't have a great day but he was able to climb up the ninth Mardi true had a terrible day and just couldn't get the car dial dialed in him. And brad kozlowski were complaining about. They just couldn't get any rewrote or rear grip on the car. It just kept sliding out of than these couldn't figure out the track whatsoever and that was all weekend too because they had the practice and the qualifying and through. Three days nashville. a baffled. Both of them so You know gibbs racing has to do a little bit of inner thinking right now. Because i mean they didn't have a car in the top ten or a outside of rebel that you and you don't expect that right back hamlin to be up there. Expect kyle busch kinda be peaking in the top ten true x. Up there too but none of them that's That's a pretty pretty rough about especially kyle busch since he's on Xfinity racists here. And i think a second ago i accidentally said stewart haas when i meant to say joe gibbs racing job and during the two. No no no i. I was looking at christopher belen. And for some reason thinking thinking stewart haas. They're thinking. Joe gibson sang stewart haas. Because they're both kind of in the same boat right now. I mean really In the standings. All right so speaking of joe gibbs racing being in that same boat a stewart haas denny hamlin still leads. The points remember was like a month or so ago he had like one hundred nine point lead in the regular season standings and was going to take home the bonus point even though he hasn't won a race yet down to ten because of how awesome carson has been over the past couple of races so that hundred plus point lead me. It's hard. it's hard to make up one hundred points on somebody in the cup series in this current you know stage points climate and and damned if carson isn't there now and at the is going is probably gonna pass any and be the regular season champion and in all honesty. He should if you win four races and nobody else has one more than two. You should be the regular season champion. It doesn't make sense if you're not s cargo as nascar or you know. There's there's another piece of news that you left out to about nascar to. Oh we'll we'll talk about that as well this so i call second William byron chase elliott enjoy. Lagana ran out the rest of the top five again. Proving the chase elliott's a penalty means nothing because he's still taking fourth in the points in the interesting part though is still down. At the bottom michael mcdowell hanging in there at sixteenth christopher bell because he had finish it national he moves up the fourteenth overall. And this is where. It's interesting. Because kurt busch right now is seventeenth right. He's eight points behind michael mcdowell but that doesn't make a damn difference. Because if he passes mcdowell when mcdowell has a win and immediately would push. Kurt busch back out of the playoffs again. So he's gotta catch. Chris butcher instead. Who is fifteenth twenty. Four points ahead of. it's completely doable. But that just illustrates how weird this system can be at times. Where you're kurt busch. And you're thinking i got to get in the top sixteen. I'll have to get any points. I can get eight point so michael. Mcdonald's forget michael mcdowell but it doesn't mean anything those eight points. The only thing that matters is getting twenty-five soon get past. You know the guy who's ahead of michael mcdowell. Exactly that's that's what you have to be there. That focus needs to be at that point but it does reinforce that. Hey this in. The playoffs is mostly about winning. Because for kurt and everybody below him really the only way to guarantee they're going to get in is to win the damn race now. Yup you gotta you gotta get it gotta be in a minute to win it to be in there. It is so. Let's let's move on to this car news And i wonder if anyone happening right now. Yeah i wanna get to To what's going on right now. while And then we'll talk about jeff gordon. So what are you all right. So according to adam stern rash. Fenway has told partners. And it has a done deal with brad kozlowski to become a driver and co owner starting in twenty twenty two per sources though They have held off on announcing indifference to Team penske not clue about the amount of steak that will be in it In terms of equity but it looks like if they're telling their partners. It's a done deal and we got ourselves a done deal at a probably one of the worst kept secrets in the garage. My gosh was broken. May yeah is it ever No so here we have it. So you gotta figure six.

Sizing up Kyle Larson's Extraordinary Run
"Want to talk about. Kyle larson in this role that this guy is on. You worked with jeff. Gordon you compete against jeff gordon. The nine hundred ninety eight and this is what this reminds me of right now. That kyle larson has six consecutive races. First or second place finishes four victories. Three points races put in perspective australia. Steve what this role means because to me. It feels a lot like jeff. Gordon circa one thousand nine hundred. Well listen. so he's driving premier equipment. The hendra motorsports car seem to have the most speed in the field but the counter that is driving that against three other premier drivers right so it's easy to say it's got the fastest stuff yet but you to chase elliott william byron and alex bone to do it and oh by the way he did he drove around chase elliott with one of the most masterful gutsy all star race tight moves driving to the outside quarter panel a third lane. We had yet to see in ninety laps. So the move for the all star race was outstanding. I think kyle. I think this is the kyle larson. We all thought was out there. You can only decided but he wins in everything. He's so much talent we didn't know if it was his preparation holding him back if it was asked if it was his youth if it was his lack of mentor sh we didn't know we'll never know because it kind of all the jumbled up reset but now he's an organization with a lot of leadership. Jeff gordon you mentioned it stein in the fox booth what he's still has a role andrew motorsports rick hendrix there. Chad can houses there. We asked outs blue being us out. Hey how're the post like you said you ever met chad kind of. There's a lot of leadership around him and a lot of confidence and a lot of talent and driving great equipment and i think that's what you're seeing right the combination of the three two minutes amount of confidence. And you know we said it on our preview show. You and i both cholera and watching. Because you take that much talent with that much motivation. The timing of hendrick motorsports and what they're doing communist chevrolet and where they are in the grand scheme of things. You got this recipe for success. Now he's doing it against the defending champion on. His team is the defending champion of our series. And he's taking the fight to him

"Why hasn't he done that. I don't know our youtube video with that. Exact question from last week is doing pretty good over there. Dot com slash. The final thought. I'd throw that in there. So if you're a kendrick let's look at it. Now you've brought a guy who is a year off suspension. How good has been this year in the eyes of the boss man. He's run so good this year. I mean if you look at thank saw. The lead over thousand laps will absent anybody this year. He was in position to win two or three times. It didn't come together and He's been through a lot and to see him. Come out here and run like that and make a statement and show his talent I think you know the guy's been through a whole lot. And i'm just excited to geez just really feels good and got a really great vibe right now here in cliff and I'll look into a lot of windsor. This year are h. On more of kyle's raw talent put a car in places that You don't think it'll go and having fun wanting to win one the lead every lap and you know he just reminds me a lot of lot of him and So i mean it's all our guys have unique talent but he is a racer and I look at william. And how far williams calm. I mean william been Every single week He's been there. I think they're just getting stronger together. But kyle is You know he's probably got more rice thing experience than the other guys He races everything. there is to race and And he says it makes him better. And i mean when you can find any kind of car go to track and and and win when you've got two guys that went all races there. I think he's made a statement at how much talent he has. You know. peer pressure is a hell of a thing. Carry and rick. Hendrick says it can be a powerful tool amongst drivers. Yeah i think listen. They all want to win. And when you lead laps. And he win races at motivates the other guys they know exactly what's in the cars. They share a ton of information They debrief together and Yeah want any. One of them wins. motivates the other guys. So there's nothing like Th they want to company women they wanna win they wanna beat the other guy but you know it's it's it's one of those things that everybody wants to be number one in in the herd so You know just let them all win races and we'll see how it comes out on the other end couple more from rick hendrick. Which car did he want to see. Break this record. I didn't care who broke the record. I mean i just wanted to win it. Anyone of them. I pull all the same and You know it's it's tough when they're battling each other for the lead but the objective in this race was win it and whoever can win it that was great The fact that the five was first number and we decided to go back to it. this year. it's pretty neat. That was our number. But i amid twenty four hours. Gotta lotta history with us. A chases number alex's number would jamie's forty eight. So i didn't care. He wanted just one of them wanna rick hendrick's going to break down his roster of drivers and his personal relationship with each and every one of them. You know number one. I'm very fortunate to have these guys. Because they're good people. I mean i've seen worked with chase since he was fourteen..

"This is golf five weekly. Welcome back to the final weekly. My name's kerry murphy his name toby christie and we call this thing the final lap weekly. I think said that Let's hear from rick hendrick like wall-to-wall flag the flag here in a segment. To first up all four cars were in the top five. This past weekend must be nice to be rick hendrick. You work hard. You hope you can pull that off and all the cars be fairly close and For under ice together. And you know. I don't know what turned it on all of a sudden but All that hard work and the cars fast guys are doing a great job. Pit crews doing well. It feels good. I mean i. I can't believe we could got to sixty nine. It was kind of neat to on anyone of win but the first one was five and and this one is no five. I just remember how close it was not to be not finish out the first year so but you work towards having this kind of communication and the cars running together but it's just hard to drivers have been the key to the success for riddick hendrick and hendrick motorsports throughout the years. Here's rick. I had a lot of really good drivers. I've been really blessed if you look at everybody. That's wanna race with us from on. Tim richmond to waltrip. I mean you can look at jeff. Gordon jimmie johnson seven championships. All of them have unique features. I think kyle is gonna win. A lot of races chases already a champion. I'm really excited about williams running every week and alex too so It's like having a bunch of kids. You love mall saying each one has different strengths and characteristics but at the end of the day they work well together so sports on top of the all time wins list and team owner. Rick has been a racer all his life. So this is nothing new you know. I've i kind of grew up with my dad. And i raised when i was fourteen and i raised all my life. I mean that's been Automobile business. I tell everybody. I'm really fortunate to be able to do two things in life. I love outside of my family that carbon the center and racing from really humble beginnings and not having money to buy tires and ride the back of a truck in trenton new jersey to watch a modified race the day and for kendrick. It's not just him. It's not just the drivers. He says he has a ton of talented people behind the success of his team over the years i was thinking out there on pit road hoping to caution and we could get it done tonight. You know how fortunate. I've been to have the talent that our organization so I think we got a lot lot all racists to win and they won't musicians really pumped up right now and we've got good momentum and we arrived as wave as long as we can't yet he's just got a tremendous amount of talent and you know cliffs got a lot of talent and they. They have the chemistry. There has been much better and quicker than i thought it could be and You know. I just say great things between those two rush this year and into the future. One thing. That kyle larson said in the in the post race. That caught me was they. Their attention to detail is so vast that the grass being mowed on the property is perfect. While here's rick describing his newest driver kyle larson khalas He's an awesome talent. I mean he is just some of the moves he makes The quality can do with a car and different situations found a place to run on track. Now he's got an also amount of talent. I mean you know. I knew how to a new talented but you seem sprint cars and midgets and everything else. Almost three or four times a week but it's the guys just. He wants to win super dedicated. He's all business and Yeah he's just got a tremendous amount of talent and you know. Cliffs got a lot of talent and they. They have the chemistry. There has been much better and quicker than i thought it could be and You know i. I just say great things between those two this year and into the future. Do you think. Kyle larson had any idea how different it would be driving for. Hms compared to see gr wall. Someone told him that. I i forget he was saying the post race is somebody told him that. Man you you in a hendrick built car. You're going to have a great season. I forget who said it was. But yeah yeah i think that's proven true. Rick hendrick happy to see nascar getting back to normal Now that we're kind of starting to wean off of the covid nineteen pandemic things are still out there and you still got to be careful but He's happy to see things going back normal. It feels so good to walk down. Pit road be able to go on pit road and To say the fans in the stands in this day excitement when when we go to the track in a race with no fans. It's like you're gonna test. That's exactly what tests feels like so just the excitement and air The fans you know coming in today Fans overflowed and the military here. That was special. It's always a special day. They trivia those folks so it just feels like we've back you know we've been cooped up for a year and not being able to go out and do things and Just good to see folks enjoying themselves. Having to wear a mask what is happening on the sponsorship front for the numbers to deal with these sponsors. He is gonna dodge this question. Here he goes. Yeah we've we've got a lot of things. Working with kyle and selfishly. I like having entered cars on it. Because it's doing it's doing a lot for business they All of the hits we have on the internet and all the fans were selling cars and having having a lot of fun with it. So he's gonna listen. We talked a lot of people There's not any problem getting a sponsor tile man so they're going to have some sponsors for the five saying well i mean he. I don't know he. He likes seeing hendrick on the car. So well yeah. But he said it wouldn't be a problem putting sponsors the car if he wants sure. So.

"Daniels is already there. On the line with us to join us here. On nascar america motormouth cliff a great guys. Thanks for having me. Yeah man good to see you. So i want to talk about the win but i wanna talk about the significance of two sixty nine. Getting that record breaking win for mr hinder. What that meant to you and kyle to be able to pull that off. Yeah it was a special day special win. Of course. I think race was relieved that it happened. Because he knew how well are companies performing right that we re edit potential to do it and of course you know all the individual teams were certainly gunning to do it But it's really cool to energy that we have entertainers tra- now. Hendrick Motorsports Nears Petty Win Record After 1-2-3-4 Result
"Hendrick motorsports the first one two three four finish for hendrick in its team history. Only the fourth time in cup history. That's been done in the first and the cup series since rosh benway racing team. You have some knowledge of two thousand five at the season finale at homestead miami speedway so just to give you a little context henrik has only been a four car team since two thousand and four so i one two three four finishing essentially seventeen years. I that they've been able to do that but you know what's your first reaction to that. When you hear the hendrick motorsports for the first time ever in what thirty. Seven years of history has a one two three four finish. Well i think about is two years ago when we were talking about. What's wrong with hendrick right. And we we. We had this expectation level of hendrik. That's pretty high. We expect to see them contending for championships winning the lottery to me to me. In the era that i raced in hendrick was the most dominant team out there and that faded faded over time and it was. They didn't jump right back into it. They had to work themselves back into it. And now here they are and they also invested you. Think about what they did. They invested in a lot of youth right so took brought a lot of young drivers and that has cultivated into a very young team with a lot of winners on it heading into right direction. This is the opposite of what we were talking about. Two years ago. I think hendrick motorsports is repositioning themselves to be dominant force. They won the championship last year. We chase elliott now chase elliott. That hasn't wanna raise this year and alex bowman's want to i know chase elliott fans. Think well that's not good but it is good if the guy that won championship you last year is the guy. That's not winning this year and everybody else has stepped it up. That's a good thing. Now they've chase elliott rezoning twentieth every weekend. That what that's not chase elliott's running okay. He's not been winning expecting to do. But but that's a good problem for a team to have. It's almost impossible to have all four clicking. You know what i mean. It's really really difficult. But i just i just i think a reversal of where we were two years ago. That's the first thing that pops in my brain
Bowman parks 48 in familiar spot in victory lane at Dover
"Once again Carl Larson led the most laps in a race but once again he was denied a trip to victory lane as his teammate Alex Bowman picked up his second NASCAR victory of the season taking the checkered flag at Dover international speedway it was a late race pit stop the put Bowman out front any help off the field as his Hendrick motorsports teammates Larson chase Elliott and William Byron ended up in second third and fourth place respectively it was the first time Hendrick motorsports teammates had ever swept the top four and only the third time any team has done it in the history of NASCAR I'm Jerry Jordan
NASCAR Richmond Cup Recap
"Nascar. Short-track action cup series from richmond raceway. Let's run things down. Ten to one austin dillon. There at number ten then he got mad to benedetto a nice finish there with top ten. Kyle busch at a pit road. Problem finishes eighth william byron eric. Merola martin tricks junior. Also pit road problems. Christopher bell number four and joy lugano his eleventh. Top five at richmond aright. Let's talk about the top. Two i up denny hamlin dominated again won. Both of the stages led a ton of laps. And it's still winless in twenty twenty one despite all top ten finishes except for one where he finished eleventh. He is the points leader by a ton anyway. So i'm sure he's not too upset. He does want a notch that window to victory lane. No one saw this coming. Alex bowman heads to victory lane. Grabs the checkered flag. Gives it to a fan for his first career. Short-track win after recovering from a pit road penalty. It's his third career cup series win. It's been twenty three richmond races. Since a hendrick motorsports car has one and it was twenty seventeen dover the last time you saw the forty eight car in victory
Bowman denies Hamlin with swift late move at Richmond
"Alex Bowman overcame a pit road penalty for an uncontrolled tire to go on to take home the win at Richmond Raceway a first of the track for Hendrick motor sports since two thousand and eight back then seven time champion Jimmie Johnson put the forty eight in victory lane when Bowman was only fifteen years old Hammond said he never expected Bowman to drive away from him because you never saw him at the front of the field throughout the day join the Ghana would finish third while Christopher bell and Martin Truex junior would round out the top five respectively I'm Jerry Jordan

That's a big time finish. Right there is Hendricks points to the family and friends out in the outfield seats. But what a performance by him to come back after a rough outing yesterday and finish it off today, you got to tip your hat. To the A's bullpen. Absolutely. They were down three to nothing early, but just bit by bit. Their bullpen kept him in the game, and the White Sox bullpen could not get critical outs without giving up some runs. And for the first time in 14 years, the A's who have been to the playoffs a lot since then are moving on as they win 6 to 4. With the Twelfth Pick of the two thousand twenty be draft the Cincinnati reds. Select Austin Hendrick outfielder from West. Allegheny High School Imperial Pennsylvania. Let's go straight to the source. The reds first round pick twelfth overall. That would be Austin Hendrick Austin Lance. McAlister, how are you? Doing Sir I'm well congratulations after all the the work over the years after all the games over the years with mom and dad driver, you'd have practice. What was that moment like for you last night? moment that I'll never forget something like you said you worked so hard for all the hours you put in something you never forget and he really work hard for. What have the last three months been like no, no baseball season and everybody's world turned upside down. What's it been like for you during that period? Yes definitely definitely been different Xiaobin on been on the field playing some games, but it's been a lot of indoor work. Indoor facilities to begin my work in the weight room, hitting slowing and just keeping in the best shape, possible very happy with my body right now so. A lot of work that's been paying in putting. Did you have a sense going in of the reds interest for you? Did you think there was an opportunity at twelve of you're there? their my opinion. I didn't know exactly what was going to happen. I had an idea from some different places. But I'm going in and hearing that I'm hearing my name called and number twelve is unbelievable, experience and like something I will never forget any idea over the months any idea how many zoom meetings you did with teams or what? What was that process like? There is a lot. A number. A really cool experience, though this town with everybody has to say and seeing where I landed as well You know I'm very very happy very excited and you know There's no way to get out there. Get the red uniform on and Get out there and play. You know that's something that I'm very excited for win. Reds fans, watch you or even when they go to Youtube and watch some of your clips to this point, what do you? What do you hope they see in you as a player in the way you play the game? This together does outplays hard plays away. You know what I mean I like to go out there and you know I. Bring a sense of confidence, a little bit of swagger, but Um, not not not a person's financial at all. Go out there fighting in the right way and you know I love the hit so. Actually you know had a couple of home runs and pity game with a lot of passion. I laughed last night. You talked about going to youtube and watching King Griffey Junior. Tell us about your appreciation for for junior, not not just the player, but the person it seems Oh. Yeah, he's A. He's a role model for me. Most definitely something. I look up to and I'm Kinda resemble my game after just a swing and his carrots there on and off the field. You know, but a great husband. Right father. Someone that you know you Kinda WanNA strive to be speaking of your swing. You simplified it last summer. Did you find confidence after that change? Oh, absolutely I'm I've always had confidence. Chain, and I'm seeing some of the things I did. more consistency felt great. Um, you know not only still even now over the whole porn pain, continue to keep them better with that and very very happy with what I did and continue to keep growing into Austin here. Here's what jumped out to me. That impresses me about your decision to when you change your swing. You were I believe at the time line is right. This was this was during some high level competition showcase events. Some guys might be Leery of getting out of their comfort zone against top notch competition. You went right to it and did it right through that, didn't you? Absolutely how most definitely There was a mike the night before decision You know playing a great. You know that's on. The next day. Really nerve wracking. Just gone and. Not. Knowing what to expect came out really well at home that day and Bad and constantly been working on that conflict on ed working with that. Here's another thing that jumps out to me and looking at your junior year. I know you were walked a lot. Few teams wanted to pitch to you that had to help your disciplined, because it doesn't seem like you chase you instead of trying to do too much. You kind of just took what they gave you. "And good-looking meals. I love it fantastic. See now Paul before we start diving deeper into this one of my favorite questions to US guests whether that teachers or professors or whoever they are is think about a favourite failure now again you can interpret this however you want it could be an experienced professional life it could be from year. You form a teaching life. Well whatever you want but what I'm interested in is what went wrong. Why didn't it go to plan but crucially? What did you learn from the experience? Well I actually don't have one favorite failure. I might have to go. The first failure was becoming teacher. I failed at that because I became frustrated. Because of those kids that I I couldn't reach and because of that it it waited May. Is that the past tense of. Yeah Okay I'm sorry. I made my first night which is now Dutch. So I throw in a lot of Douglas witted or wet my appetite for understanding how learners study and learn so that I could make it more fictive efficient and enjoyable so that was my favorite. I David Failure the second failure was not emigrating to New Zealand and going back to university. my wife. Well at the time she was just my girlfriend we traveled. We will go to travel overland to India and then go to South East Asia. You have to realize that we were hippies. At that time South East Asia. We were going to go to Australia and then finally to New Zealand and somewhere in the outback of New Zealand. To a try again maybe to become a teacher and that type of environment in a more small one room country schoolhouse type of environment and my wife said at the last moment. I don't want to emigrate. I don't want to leave the Netherlands. Why don't you write a univer- University and Maybe Start Your studies again there? No I wrote. That letter came back from India completely in white and completely may she aided and there was a letter waiting for me on Saturday arrived. Could you come on Monday and talk to the Study Advisor at University of Amsterdam about starting a study there? I went there on Monday. And the rest is history. I got accepted had to do one. Course that hadn't done in the United States. I studied a developmental psychology for half a year until they started a new department of Educational Psychology. I did that at a combined what I wanted to do and that was study. I how people study learn effectively efficiently and enjoy ably and to design. Learned HOW TO DESIGN. Instruction help them to do that. Tough steak too great experiences and great lessons now purple now listeners. Maybe thinking what whereas call we need a bit more jackass. Now the reason I haven't asked for his favourite failure or respect and we did not bought with Robbins of people. Want to listen to this about pauline. Fear not listen. This call is coming in very very soon because I wanna I wanNA talk before. We dive into the book about a paper. That co-authored Paul which was why minimal guidance during instruction does not work. Now I I definitely got some some views on this is was quite seminal paper for me and I am. I suspect Carl has to so before we discuss that. I just wanted giggles a bit of a a bit of background Paul into into the writing about paper and did you. Did you realize when you when you pull it together? This was going to be an important piece of work. And and how? How did it come together initially okay? The answer to the second part of the question was no. I had no idea that this would be the paper. I mean when you're when you're studying psychology there are certain or anything. I should say any area. You always have one or two or three papers that you say. Wow that's that's that's a paper. Wouldn't it be great to have written that and you realize oh I will never write it and so I had absolutely no idea that it would be the type of paper the people would come to me and say you know Paul? I read the paper and it changed my life. Yes yes and I. Kind of like Whoa. I never realized that at all so the answer to that is no. I had no idea when we wrote it. That would have that type of which. How did it come about? I was at a conference with John John Sweater and there was some presentation that we were both out. I think it was a keynote speech again dealing with discovery and both of us had this problem with discovery learning and John asked the question and got. What are the typical? Bs Answers normal. And afterwards I went up to John. Because I had met him earlier and it had long discussions with him about cognitive load theory and hey I had a difference of opinion with him about cognitive load theory okay and we had our long discussions really great discussions. They said to John. I think it's the People. Just don't understand certain things and we got into this discussion about it and it came to be said like well. Let's try to write a paper about it about why inquiry learning discovery learning guided learning. Why it doesn't work so we started working on this paper together and while talking to each other we were at another conference after that. And we're talking to each other and John said maybe we should ask a Dick Clark if you'd like to be a critical reader of this because Dick did great work on and media and methods is nineteen. Eighty-three article is for me. One of those articles that I wish would have written that type of thing and so we asked him if he said yes. I met Dick earlier. Also I knew him and He sent it to me. Read it and he came back with this kind of like sheepish question from. I don't I don't even dare to ask it. But could I be the third author here and both of US said Yeah. No Problem Great. So it kind of round robin thing. We wrote this paper. It was great because Dick is nine hours from me earlier in California and John is nine hours later than me than I am in Australia so you could really do. In one day you could go spend three four hours working on send it someone else would get it before our send it you get it back. Twenty four hours later and it was completely revised that was great so we sent it into educational psychologists and we've got a beautiful review of it and two of the reviewers were critical but very positive about it and one. I think I know who it is but I'm not going to mention any names was completely negative and like that and so I talked to John and Dick about it and I wrote Lynn Corno. Who At that point was the editor and the new editor Gail Sinatra? I wrote an email to Lynn with gail. I remember correctly. And they said listen Lynn we can make use of reviewer one and three and rate really make this article better but if you want to also attend to what what if you were to says. I'm pulling the. We're putting the paperback now because there's no way we can do. It won't end up the paper that we want anything we do. We'll never be agreed to. Wow and yeah I I. It wasn't even we say it wasn't this kind of thing like I wanted to put my mark. That was really true. I would just pull it back and we go somewhere else because there was no way we could. We could do that and Lynch said No. Don't worry deal with those other to leave it to me. So we did that in a round robin thing again. In a minimum of time and it got accepted and the rest is history. I think one of the things that boosted it was the fact that three groups of people decided to write a reply to it. A group in Rotterdam a group in the United States in New Jersey and Deanna Kuhn so one group was with Hank Schmidt One group Cinderella silver and her colleagues and he had accrued and they wrote a reply to it and Lynn was good enough to say these are the replies. Would you like to write a Duplai? It's the Dutch duplicate replied to reply and we did. And because of the fact that it became a discussion that means people who were on both sides of the question where it and it just took off from there. Wow absolutely fascinating again. As I say I've got a few thoughts. Let let me just come to you. Call on this. And when did you first come across the paper? And what kind of impact did it have on on you? I think actually read. The there was a an article in the tape putting students on the path to learn as so I read that and this is I want to say something like eight years ago. Nine years ago to came up on then I read that and then read the paper And I guess the thing about it was that it was the first time I had ever encountered those views in the field of education research. I like a lot of teachers are gone years with really only hearing The notion that kids construct knowledge together. The kids should be working in groups The notion that teacher talking is inherently bad. And you should limit it as much as possible. things you know. The the explaining of something Is Sort of inherently bad? So you know I kind of red and then felt accident form of liberation in a way and then managed to connect with the people and I guess the the thing about the paper is that it's it's sort of A A couple of things in an apartment is part of the first things. The paper does not. It doesn't say that what's Discovery based approaches. You should never use it. What actually says is that it's ineffective using it with novices. Yes An- An- not stocks. That was a key thing for me and so people often conflict Cold Work and others in the field is being discovery. Learning is terrible necessarily. That's that's really not the case you. The thing is that I think it just very elegantly and simply made the point that there's sort of a Who as a conflation of the advanced stages of something with the underdeveloped stages of something and so? There's this sort of idea that well if you look at an expert while that's the way to do it you know Look look I hate us. Well that's the way you should do. All that's inherently the wrong thing to do when someone is beginning with something. The last thing about it I think is that I had. I had done a masters degree in modern contemporary literature. And then I started to do the reading. Phd In education. And I found that the was broadly. Speaking two types of research and education one that was completely impenetrable and was sort of a love letter from one academic to another.

A white rose muffs get yourself among them anyway. Back to today's show with call hundred. I'm Paul Kirschner. Now poll cushion describes himself as an educational realist. He's also an emeritus professor of educational psychology the Open University. A personal note. Poll is the CO author of a research paper that had a profound influence on my own teaching practice. Not Paper was why minimal guidance during instruction does not work. And it's something we discussed in the interview. Then we have called Hendrick now. Call a podcast favorite appearing a few years ago with Robin Macpherson to discuss the excellent book. What does it look like in the classroom? Call is an English teacher and Director of Research at Wellington College. Polin call have come together to write a new book. How learning happens. Seminal works in educational psychology and it is superb so in a wide-ranging compensation we discussed the following things and plenty more besides pull describes not one book two of his favourite failures on tells us what he learned from the experiences. We die deep into the rewriting of an reaction to pull seminal paper why minimal guidance during construction does not work on following on from that poll response to criticisms of his mantra. That learning is a change in long term memory then I asked Colin poll to each choose a paper from that book and describe why they think it is important for teachers to know about. I'm they choose to absolute classics. And then finally we discussed educational research in general. What can cognitive science not tellers. And can you prove anything with research? Now I actually have two of the normal episodes that I recorded before the school closures. One with Mark Healey and another with Robert Kaplinsky however I decided to bump this episode off the running order because we touch upon column polls thought about remote teaching and learning based on all the things they have read and researched and I thought that might be relevant to listeners in tricky time. Now it'll be surprised because I say this all the time but I genuinely genuinely mean. I absolutely loved this conversation. I'll be looking up to see poll. Speak a couple of times but never quite have the courage to go and say hello. I'll sort it was a privilege to talk to him and call in-depth about areas of education. We are all passionate about two very quick plugs before we start as I mentioned in the intro of recorded a series of episodes under the title of teaching from hope where interview teaches about their strategies technology based and otherwise to ensure that teacher. The student sorry.
