"Discusses gun gun control that is in the Los Angeles area of this afternoon. He has been in Monterey Park, California, the scene of a mass shooting at a dance hall back in January. And I'm determined once again to ban a soul weapons and high capacity magazines. Let's take it live to CBS News White House correspondent Stephen portnoy, hello Steven. Hi, Hilary hi, Sean. Hey, beyond what we just heard from the president, what did he announce? Well, the president today signed an executive order that in part is aimed at expanding background checks and to take them as far as the law will allow. To move us as close as we can get to universal background checks in the words of the president without passing additional legislation. What specifically does he mean by that? Well, last year in the bipartisan gun safety Bill, Congress aimed to address this question of whether there's a loophole here. With private sales. And essentially, people going to small time sellers to buy guns rather than the federally licensed firearms dealers, where a storefront, if you go there, you're going to have to have a background check before you purchase a gun. But there's this loophole if you go to a smaller small time person who perhaps doesn't see himself as a dealer. Last year, Congress passed a law that said that it's not just the fact that someone makes a living selling guns, but they also have to essentially demonstrate that they are profiting from the sale of guns. And that's what the executive order really gets into whether it's possible for the government to write rules. So that you can have people who are selling guns for profit, running background checks, even if they're not doing it as a business from which they're deriving their livelihood. And that is something that gun control advocates have been pushing for for years. There's the example in 2019 in Odessa, where there was a shooter who went to a firearms dealer was prohibited from buying a gun there legally because he had a history of mental illness. And yet he went to a small time gun seller and was able to buy his weapon, an AR-15 without a background check. Is there anything else that might be on the Biden administration agenda trying to advance this issue from their standpoint? Or is this going to be something that this is their stand for now as we head toward 2024? Well, last year, Sean, you know, you had the bipartisan gun safety law passed through a democratic controlled House. And now, in this Congress, the house is controlled by Republicans, the president says that these are common sense measures to see to it that there's universal background checks that there's a majority support for it in the country overwhelming majority support for it in the country. And yet he recognizes the likelihood that it's not going to pass in Congress. So he's implementing the federal law that was passed last year, and he's urging Americans to call on Congress to do more. Do something as he put it in Monterey Park today, do something big. He wants the Congress to pass a ban on the semi automatic rifles that he calls assault weapons, but the political reality is that that's not going to advance in this Congress. All righty, thank you, Steve. You bet. CBS News White House correspondent Stephen portnoy. Quick look at the top stories we're working on for you. "And Sean priest. Who was the greatest who was the best screen reader ever? I haven't even said a word yet. Unbelief. Not one syllable, if I said, and you've already started on me hello Steven Scott, how are you? I'm fine. This is me kam after. Oh good. I thought you were going to rant on. Oh, no, no. Well, I might actually because I've got plenty of things in my mind. Why is my computer so rubbish? So I sat out this little laptop with my Windows 11. I don't really want to go back. I'm seated. When I took the back of it. Let's just move on from that. So I get it back. I install it all and everything's going fine. I plug in my broadcaster and it obviously takes over the ordeal. But then what happens is that for some reason, the USB doesn't seem to notice it doesn't recognize it as an audio device. So it works for like 5 minutes. And it just stops, so therefore I get new audio. Brilliant. Absolutely. How would they have done windows? Will you blame me in windows for? User error. That's what I say. Why does it work for 5 minutes? Have you got the USB power saving on some weird setting? What's going on? I don't know. Fair enough. Well done. As long as you've done your research, I've done all the research I could be bothered to do, which is a ton of computer off turned on and I'm going to say message. So I guess who's calling be my eyes, Microsoft support writer. Ah, that is so good though. I love that. But Windows audio system is a little bit. I mean, it's okay, but you compare it to the Mac. The Mac is so much better when it comes to audio. It used to be better years ago. I remember, remember those cards are used to get the PCIe PCIe, it was just PCI cards. Back in the day. And you would plug them into the computer and then you'd have that big parallel cable. I don't know if you ever had those, but I remember using them in a radio station once at a big parallel capability into the clips on the edge to keep it in place. That's right. And then what's that about? And then you had this big thick cable that you didn't bend because you think it's going to snap everything inside if I do this. And then you would have a breakout box. I think the one I used way back when was an echo Gina. She knows the name of the I think it was did you grab and shut down? It's also a shampoo, yes. That's right. No, it's not. But yeah, so what was I talking about? Oh, yeah, same cards. So yeah, the point is shampoo there. That was a problem. No, I was just thinking about it, because I remember those days, Windows audio architecture seemed much more solid. I just seemed better, whereas now, yeah, it does seem to be that it just trips up on anything. It just might be the problem here. I think USB is the bigger issue. You know, I've often wondered if it's the best.

"There's no Bluetooth connectivity. There's no inputs there. So that Apple limitations that I find with so many Apple products are still there. You're in the Apple camp and that's it. Now, if you can live with that and you are in the Apple cap, absolutely fine, you're not going to have any problems, but yeah, and to be fair to Apple, I don't think they are saying these are really smart speakers. I think these are Apple music, accessories, hardware accessories. And when it comes to that, I can't fault them, but when it comes to the smart side of it, I am struggling with it. And here in the UK, as well, there's some limitations I find you can't play like BBC Radio stations because it doesn't support BBC sangs the service, so I can't play my local BBC Radio stations. But tune in is on there, so I can play everything that's on tune in. Other limitations, yeah, I don't know. Everything's got to be HomeKit, obviously. There's no support for anything else. At the moment. And that is going to change. That is going to change because it's got the matter and the thread capability. Absolutely. But the first gen also has the matter hub inside as well. It just doesn't have the thread. It uses Wi-Fi to connect to the external devices and thread in much wider reach in. It's like the ZigBee slightly different. But at the end of the day, as things because we're in transition at the minute till everything becomes matter compatible. And in which case, I think there is going to be a lot more utility in here at the minute. I can't really use any of my smart devices. My smart home devices with my homepods because none of them are really HomeKit. So I am finding a limitation there. But again, you know, these are Apple devices. And when you buy an Apple device, you sort of, I'm all in on Apple. Well, yeah, and I think that's fine, right? I mean, at the end of the day, if they're not being marketed as smart speakers, then let's cut them some slack. And that's a good point. If that's not what they're being sold at. That's not to say they're done. No. Look what Greg did for us with that demo. There is work around and shortcuts is a really good example of that. I just think shortcuts is a little bit of hard work for the average user to go in to get things started. I think it really needs to be in the terms of a speaker or the whole thing of it is ease of use. You just simply shout in what you want it to do. And having to go in a set up shortcuts and think, I think that is a little bit more than the most average users want to do, but equally, it is quite fun to find out what people can do with shortcuts and all the fancy stuff. And you mentioned Greg, of course, now Greg got back in touch with us, didn't he, too, to tell us about some cool stuff that you can do. Now, of course, everyone's talking about chat GPT at the moment and this fantastic way of using artificial intelligence to do all kinds of cool stuff. And Greg has been back in touch with us to show how he's linked together, chat GPT, and silly through his home pod. He is how that works. Hello, Steven. This is Greg from Phoenix and I've

"Got 39° at metro center. WTO at 6 41. Breaking news here on WTO history was made today at The White House when Ukraine's president paid a defiant wartime visit to D.C. for a meeting with President Biden, Vladimir zelensky, thanked the U.S. for its support in helping Ukraine fight off Russia's invasion, pledged there would be no compromises in trying to end the war. And zelensky has now set to address Congress in the next hour. Joining us now with more CBS News White House correspondent Stephen portnoy, hello, Steven. Hi, Hilary hi, Sean. So what in particular was the focus of this rare face to face meeting with zelensky? Well, this, as you know, came together just in the last few days. It was an invitation that the president extended mid week last week. It was really nailed down on Sunday. It was kept secret until last night. Volodymyr zelensky was sitting alongside the president of the United States in the Oval Office today. He was wearing his green fatigues, the green T-shirt, he expressed his appreciation to the president to American lawmakers to the American public. He said from my heart and from the heart of Ukrainians all Ukrainians. At a certain point today in the Oval Office, Vladimir zelensky handed the president an award that was given over to him by a Ukrainian army captain and zelensky said that that captain was very brave, but the captain said, give this award to a very brave president, President Biden said he was undeserving, but appreciative. Overall, this is an attempt for volodymyr zelensky to express as he's going to in the halls of Congress in about an hour. His appreciation to the American public for its continued support, which zelensky said he expected would continue even as the house changes hands. He says he believes that there will continue to be bipartisan and bicameral support for Ukraine. The Congress is poised to pass an additional roughly $45 billion in aid to Ukraine. The U.S. is going to be sending the advanced patriot missile defense system. Today, a Ukrainian reporter during the joint news conference asked President Biden. Why the U.S. is not sent more advanced weapon systems and it was a candid moment where zelensky responded in English and said, I agree. And essentially shrugged his shoulders. The president said he worried that if the United States were to send more advanced weapons systems to Ukraine, that it could upend the NATO alliance. But he vowed that the U.S. would stand with Ukraine as long as it takes. Very good Stephen, thanks much. Stephen portnoy, CBS White House correspondent again, the Ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky will be addressing Congress around 7 30 tonight we'll have complete coverage here on WTO. 6 43. "Along to a cold, cold day is definitely definitely winter time officially. I can only imagine what temperature is in the shed. Sean, are you all right? Have you are you frozen stiff in there? Are you all right? I am gorgeous. It's actually warmer in my shed hello, Steven. It's warmer in my shed than it is in the house. Yesterday, I was recording an episode of Shaun of the shed. And I actually fell asleep. Well, this is a lot, doesn't it? What was the topic? Should we be looking forward to or not? No, no, no, I'm going to keep it under my hat for now. The fact was, my phones had run out because I was screen recording on my phones and everything. And I just put them onto charge, give me a little bit of a charge and I'll just wait and then it was like three hours later and I was sweating in my shed. But no, I'm fine, thank you, but doesn't it feel Christmassy? It does it for that feeling, yeah. It's lovely. If you're snow on the ground here in Scotland, if you get snow Manchester, we had snow, and now it's just slippy, slippy ice. So yeah, it's a little bit treacherous out there, but it's cool. And every time I go out the house, someone will say, oh, now watch yourself be careful because obviously I'm more at risk at slipping apparently. I'm not. I'm very sure footed. I'm glad you are. I must admit, I am not particularly sure if I just don't go out. I think that's the easiest bit. That's not a blind thing, right? Does being blind mean that you're more prone to slippage? No, no, not at all. There we go. That's another myth. God, shattering myths we are. We're MythBusters. We are we are certainly something. I will tell you that. Yes. No, you know what I'm saying? I just tend to think I just don't. I hear all these people who go on. I hear all the time, people who go out the house and they slip and fall. And you think to yourself, why bother? Don't you know they deliver these days, you don't have to go outside. You can stay indoors, it's brilliant. I would love to argue the point and play devil's advocate, but now I'm with you. I'm not leaving the shed. I can help it. Anyway, I hope you're all keeping warm. I

In college and after college, I always liked, I like that stuff. The sweet stuff. Pretty good. And Michael says, hi. Well, hey, Michael. It would not really be that bad. Nemesis. I'm not just a guard. Have you as a serious threat? Well, okay. And I was going to say, I'm a methodist. And I don't think methodists do exorcisms. Yeah, my wife grew up in the message church here. So you're right. Anyway. So what happened to my Tiger Saturday? It was my poker dice so I didn't get to watch, but the last little part. Hold on, your poker day? Yes. So my girlfriends and I play pecker once a month on Saturday afternoons. Will we play all different games, we play something called follow the queen, we play. Well, we play follow the queen way play. Kind of thing. Wow. We just make up stuff. I'm sorry, I just can't. I'm a little slow up there. Now that we do, we have great time. And we have snacks and wine, and we start at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. So let's have a snacks. Oh gosh, whichever the we have 5 of us and the house is decide Saturday we had chicken salad sandwiches on croissants. We had a great cheese dip. Just all kinds of stuff. And we always have wine. Does your poker group know that I got a talking to you about your husband? No. Okay, good. I don't want that. I don't want that to get around. Well, I hope that was I hope you didn't mind. He's a good guy. It's not the first husband that is called me out. Anyway, my Tiger was smarty. Anyway, my tigers lost and I hate it. But all seriousness, pat. Games like that do not matter much in the end. They may cost auburn a seed, but auburn is still in great shape. Hey, thank you very much for the call. You take care of yourself. And the poker club on Friday afternoon. Davis is in Wisconsin. Hello, Davis. Yes, second time caller last time I called the bulldogs were down 28 to three and scored 40 on answered. I just want to say the gym, evil spirit. It's an evil knievel spirit and Paul Flynn is our bad backside. Oh, I like that. I think that's good. Thank you, sir. Yeah. I think. Steven is in Kentucky. Hello, Steven. Yes, hi. Thank you for taking my call. First time caller and I truly love your show. Thank you. I just want to make a comment about waffle houses. It's been quite a few years ago, but they had a buffet in Beaumont, Texas. It's right off of interstate ten and that's the best waffle House I ever. But in closing, it'd be nice if somehow in sports, sportsmanship would return to the game. And, you know, I really would like to see that happen, but I don't know. Well, I'll hang up and I think I really do believe most schools exhibit sportsmanship. We just happen to see the outlier yesterday. Aaron is up next. Good afternoon, Aaron. Paul, it is an honor to finally speak on your program. I'm a first time caller. I grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, so I'm an out of towner, but I live in Phoenix city. Wonderful. What I wanted to talk about was the Juan Howard situation. Sure. And a lot of these legends and he is no doubt a legend in college basketball, but a lot of these legends make split second decisions that cost them their livelihood. And Colin Powell said, never let your ego be so close to your position. That when you position falls, your ego falls with it. What a great line. So what I would tell you is I would prefer that Michigan. Go ahead and take the step to fire Jon Howard based on he's in charge of a bunch of young men. And I would prefer that he'd be the example. Yeah, and I think you could justify firing him, but he is not going to be fired based on everything I'm seeing and hearing. I'm really surprised what is taking the university and the Big Ten so long. I realize there are mitigating factors here, but you're absolutely right about what you said and quoting general Powell. It is absolutely a different world that we live in. Thanks for the call. There have been a lot of former players though who made good coaches. And until recently, I thought Joanne Howard was a really good coach. I mean, he did a spectacular job last year. We are heading to a break another hour to go. We look forward to talking to all of you right here..

Yeah, so people are picking out their tight newlyweds picking out their title, they can just point to my shirt and go, okay, that's the color I want in the bathroom. There you go. I want to talk about the college playoffs. Paul, it's refreshing to see two new teams making their maiden voyage into the college playoffs this year. I think Michigan and Alabama will make for a compelling championship. I can't see Georgia getting in. I just can't curve smart has proven time and time again when the lights are bright and the stakes are high. He can't coach a fat man to a free dinner ball, roll that gum. Is that an Alabama fan wishful thinking or is that really how they think? Steven is up next to hello, Steven. Well, thank you. Listen, I call about a year ago about the name image likeness thing. I've been thinking about Jim Thorpe, who was an American Indian who set several. Olympic medals in many places later in the NFL, but he lost his Olympic medals because he had played semi pro ball. Right. With the revision of the name image was there pretty possibility that he might get a somebody might restore his mills. It's just a hypothetical question. It's a great, it's a great, it's a great question, but I'm not sure how it would be applicable though because you have college rules are going to be a little bit different than what we're talking about here is the International Olympic Committee making a ruling based on something that has happened in the NCAA. And I think you could easily argue that you have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Hey, thanks for the call. I appreciate it. Ralph stokes. Legendary player at Alabama, part of the.

"I you know i. I would think that they would try to sign them. Yeah i mean that seems like a lot to me. They warrant they right up against it at the trade deadline because all the arbitration reset. Yeah that's exactly right. So now all of these guys are essentially come off their salary and are sitting within arbitration. And nobody really knows what those numbers are gonna bay and again like you said. The will have an impact on that stuff as well. Yes absolutely i would think you know and this is where you know you can say whatever you want about rob manfred as commissioner of major league baseball. But this is where his expertise lies in. He is a collective bargaining agreement lawyer. He has a labor lawyer on the side of the ownership. This is why he is where he is is to navigate all the little nuances nuance through the and you know. This is what goes on. I mean and this is why he's hired. This is the most important thing that he can do. Right now is to get this thing done. Yeah and. I don't have any faith in because i think he's a terrible commissioner. Well whatever i mean you can say whatever you want about what they're doing on the baseball field but he's not hired for anything other than to get this done and to have it in favor of at least in the eyes of the owners. Yeah well every commissioner is the same way every insurance. They worked for the now. Of course i understand unfortunately there the mouthpiece for the owners and every now and again they have to go against an owner or two opinion for the greater. Good it again exactly. So so. that's that's where he finds himself now and this is his world of expertise. This is one of reasons why he became. Commissioner let's go to joe's in patchy fog. What's happening joe. Hey good morning guys how you guys doing good man what's up Nothing much Listen i just wanted to see you got thought about the eighteen former. Nba players that have been arrested and charged federally for insurance fraud. It seemed kind of interesting because it was only collectively for like three point. Nine million dollars. Shannon brown gary smiles. In avis. yeah going to think about doing that. I haven't the last thing i want to do. Is have any of those people involved in my life the fbi or anybody else. Been down that road before so we know what that could be like. Do you think anything like that is similarly going on the nfl. The nfl does not have nearly the The benefits that these players have wire saw an opportunity to go steal some money and they took it. And i and amazing thing is is that these players collectively i think of may close to four hundred million dollars. Yeah i know and the colour saying well. It's only three point nine million dollars. But i mean an extra two hundred thousand here three hundred. I mean it's a lot on a hundred percent fraud. We live here in new york. So how much do you think's going on. There's a lot of fraud from the paper license plates. The as he accidents today the insurance fraud and everything else think about. How much crap is going on around here. Isn't it that whole thing. Where like there's a if you hit somebody from behind it's always your fault. Regardless of the situation you get a lot of these people who end up just jam and cutting you off. Jam on the brakes Isn't that. I'll get insurance fraud scheme thing that goes on. Yes yeah not good stephen in brooklyn. What's up steven allow. Hello steven yeah. I'll tell them about the yankees. Yeah go ahead. let's hear it. They had They had added and the thing over there and he was saying ramos. Famer judge wasn't there. He was still in basic. He was on a switch hitter. He was hitting and they sent him down. But i come out Geilo that struck out like we gave the raw data is the probably the prime example stephen of the all or nothing guy versus the what allocates now one of his new favourite the hate phrases the small bowl yankees But yeah yeah every year they think that. Oh let me put gary sanchez. And so he could hit a home run and don't do nothing but miss all the boys and that's what god does as a striped out. Oh maybe here hit a home run. It's always maybe maybe make you can't go on. Maybe maybe not happen on more right now. Actually people that got still basis and everything again. You know what stephen guests. We're joey gallo is going to be next year. No i well. He's under contract though he's an arbitration three guy. Right there with aaron judge. Yeah but he's under contract next year. So i mean. They traded him with another year control. But yeah i mean that's a common theme that we've her i'll tell you if they bring if they bring him back. Oh yeah i mean i know. He's a good outfielder. And everything else. That i guess he had a just a terrible time adjusting to the stuff. We could talk about a million things with him. But he's like the Hitomi of what. The yankee fan is tired of. That's the problem that joey and i know he's a lefty. But that only goes so far. You gotta hit the ball for it to make a difference. But joey gallo was. The epitome of the yankee fan is sick of which is the guy who was going to chase. He's going to strike out a million times any might run into one and in a big game. He's non-existent he's totally disappeared. There's going to be you know the gallo one. He's under contract. Brian cashman traded for him expecting him to come in here and be good and then continue to have on the team next year. But he's another one that might have to just go. You know yes. Carry sanchez gleyber torres. Joey gallo trade aroldis chapman gala would probably get. How much money did he get paid. An arbitration as pastures another guy would probably get a significant amount arbitration even though he hit onto two hundred strikes out at a clip. That's alarming but. I think he probably another guy who's over ten million. That's for sure i'll easily. Yeah maybe even fifteen million. Those are the big decisions in probably going. Be brian cashman or the new gm which. I doubt probably ten percent chance that it's not brian cashman. Turn this thing around. But that's those are. The those are the guys that i think are the questionable ones the core guys. You know we're gonna stay here under contract. Can't get rid of whatever the ones that. I mentioned gallo. Sanchez tore as chapman britain. I would say that major league baseball needs to have i think arbitration reform. I think it's just it's it's to me but not only that it takes forever for some of these guys to cash in. Well i know it does. That's why i'm saying. I somehow the players gotta make money earlier especially a guy was. I would always argue this with the nfl pa and i would say all right. So they're de emphasizing the running back position. So what are you doing to protect those guys who play the most physical most demanding position in the league. How are you protecting them or can you carve out a separate amount of money that they get paid.

"Because we need at this point, just even if it's a minute, minimal power platform, we have it. Can't do that. To which I'd say no, I'd say BS. I use actual words didn't say BS because it's a some point you move away. And I watched a sermon The other night with David Barton was outstanding, Hey, was talking about run toward the roar. He was using a lioness an analogy. But anyway, the gist of it was That at some point you're doing something that has the right effect. You need down the road. My lovely wife used to say this. Nice to say, girls. Get the hell out there, baby. Let's move. Tennessee was going to Texas. Let's go to Florida. This is absurd. Nothing's happening here. This is worthless. You said no. And I knew this. I've said this myself. Somebody got it for me. Let's say we're plant. It's like Acorn said you're planning in a acorn from which grows on mighty oak. That common organization ACORN? That's why that's why they call themselves a corn, but well, it was an acronym, but that's why they use that the bottom line is, is that what we're doing now? You don't know what affect it has down the road, and I would argue it has a massively like the butterfly effect as a massively powerful effect. You can't keep going along with the failed Republican party. It can't happen now. Don't get me wrong. I'm not going all are all bein room when he was running for office used to advertise on whim. The man's a total psycho on our Facebook sits in his basement and does nothing but insult people in Republicans. And people say he's kind of productive. Yeah, I'll give you that. I'm I'm not saying you move window vote for Republicans. I'm saying you vote for only conservatives, and you don't go by their shuck and jive rap about their voting record. You look at what they really, really have said and done and a spouse. Are they doing the right thing? You know, I almost hate to use this is very different in mind. But Patrick Coburn, he's the gold standard on this. Public's the gold standard. And people are still saying vote he needs to be governor. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, that that that ship has sailed, Okay? He comes back in great. Try to get him to run for a representative out there and from the 11 he would have people taking it away. He could've beat Stevens. Hello, Stevens. But anyway, my point is this quite simply You vote for the right guy? Because he does the right thing, even if he doesn't get To do the right thing. Most immediately. You must stand your ground. And right now, if we haven't been shown that the Republican Party is almost our enemy. Talking about we the thinking. But we sent Donald Trump to D. C. We didn't send him there as a Republican party. In fact, the Republican Party tried everything they could do to get him not in the running in the first place. Every one of them. Even the ones that begrudgingly sort of maybe came around and then come around. Come around it all. That at all? Behind the scenes they were working against him Tooth and nail. And if you think I'm focusing, is this on Trump? I am because that that's emblematic of what I'm talking about. The Republican Party is doing nobody any favors, and at some point we move away from it and we go someplace else, and we get serious conservatives and I know who that is. It's time for serious conservatives to step up and say, Hey, I'll run on and then we vet them. I don't know. I mean, we've had no luck whatsoever in Michigan, have we I voted for John James. Is that a conservative? Not in close now, and where was James making any statement whatsoever? On the war that we're fighting right now. I mean the actual war that had the war against Democrats Socialism, calling it a such well, that's too radical. Can't talk like that that l turn people after might vote for me from the Democrat Party. Really? And then you're damaged goods to begin with, If that's your mindset So I don't have an answer. I'm not saying I've got all the answers. I mean, uh, some guy nailed me a few years back. You may have heard the call was kind of funny. You get on the radio, and you say this is you never give us any solutions. To which I said I've given you plenty of solutions, man, but I have a solution for everything. No, that doesn't mean we don't talk about things so that we could kind of kick it around. I go back to with regard to this getting out of the Republican Party. At one point somebody said, Hey, let's get together, implement that. Whatever that building is on Farmer Street, or I forget. We're west of his crewman. But you get the point that the tea party people, said Dennis, Uh, what's his name was down here with the willow run. Let's get together that restaurant out there and he's Michigan Avenue. At some point, people started getting together and Cole Ussing around that. How every movement starts. I go back to this. The Chinese revolution the straight up most evil serial killing revolution. In this trip, mankind started with eight guys in a coffeehouse. Hitler started in a beer hall with probably 10 guys. Got it..

Jumping Into Markdown

"Many Stephen Hackett, and I, have joined is always of my co-host and friend Mr David sparkes. Hello. Steven. How are you? Today? I'm good. How are you? I am ready to talk about markdown. We're touching the third rail here. The podcasting Faux Pas, we're going to talk about a little bit about coating on an audio podcast. I, think mark down the big exception. As we get into this. The whole idea is that it's really simple and so I think we can talk to this syntax and be just fine. Yeah Yeah. Well, this is a good episode we're going deep on markdown today Marc out something that a lot of people are aware of, but not as many people know how to do and it is really easy get through this podcast today. Down pro. I think so too before we get into all of that just real quick it is. We are in August. Now, I don't know how that happened. But we we will be working on and planning episodes around Iowa's fourteen. Macara's Big Sur. Couple of people had had asked about those I. Think we'll do what we did last year and and have A. Episode per release win. That is nobody knows and so we we're kind of keeping an eye on apple said in their results at the phone will be later this year by a couple of weeks does that mean? In Big Sur. Later, by couple weeks to WHO knows nobody knows. So this is going to be a fun adventure all in together this year. And related questions I've had from people are what about shortcuts and the photos field guide the most of those areas got up with this new operating system I. Think I'm going to have an a free update shortcuts when they launch Iowa's where team, but the question is nobody knows when they'll launch it. So if they launch it next week, I will not have an update ready, but there will be an update eventually or hopefully on launch day for shortcuts followed by a free update photos both of those will be free last year. I had to charge for shortcuts because apple rewrote shortcuts I to do the whole thing from scratch fortunately, that's not the case this year. So I'll have some so free updates. If you've already about those field guides also today we are going to in more power users. We're GONNA talk some tech stuff stephen is getting ready to prep for the annual the podcast on and right there's a bunch of technology involved with that. So we're looking forward to talking about that more power users today. So technology and sobbing both. Both. Right now. I really this is a stranger I have a lot of questions. boy Yeah. So let's get into. It's going to mark down. Just. A touch of background markdown was created by John Gruber the writer of daring fireball. We spoke about this episode four, hundred, sixty, six AMAC power users where he was a guest talk about the history of it. He's given other interviews about the history of markdown. and. It's really cool I. Mean it is sort of the definition of writing a project to scratch an edge. You have. He wanted a tool for riding on the web that wasn't. Junkie and Messi like html is and markdown came out of that desire I. think that's pretty cool. Yeah I mean John had a blog. He was one of the first that I was aware of the did the linked posts you know where he would link something and make a few comments about it, but it also have more extensive posts. and. He wanted simple method right in. So he did He created his own tool, and who would a guest that it became such a big thing. It's everywhere and we're GonNa get to that later in the episode of just how many places you can use markdown and it shows up in some pretty surprising projects and websites across the Internet. And the idea of it really though at its at its foundational level is just something you can write with any plain text editor that at the end of the process gives you usable text for html at least that was the original idea now since then it's become so much more because now you can export as rich text and you can do all sorts of cool things with markdown but having a starting point where you can sit there with the keyboard and not have to fiddle with code snippets and make something that's usable later. That's right. So the initial pitch when Gruber announced it is that this is a tool to convert plane tech's to html for people who are riding on the web, and so if you're blogging and you need Italics were bold or links, you don't have to do that in html you can do it in mark down and then they're marginally two things. It's the syntax and there's an interpreter and you can. Get it on your website and it Lowe's html and everybody sees a regular web page. But like you said over the years it has. Shown up everywhere. It's even supported in x code now as of a couple of years ago, which is gonNA. Feel pretty good. If you're if you're John Right this product you built being blessed and put an exco that's gotta be pretty. Cool. Talking about those two pieces of let's break them down for a second because the first piece to me is almost is definitely more important than the second piece in the first piece is it's a text syntax where you can include links and rich text items without having a rich text. You know nobody in air quotes here, word processor at your disposal, and that is something that's very useful but the syntax in addition to being something that's easily convertible he also made it and I think this is the genius of markdown he made easily readable. So when you read if I put a page of html in front of anybody listening to the show next to page of mark down. It would be obvious how much easier it is to read markdown than html because h inasmuch codes and tags and other things in it that really get in the way of finding the words whereas markdown is all about the words and the very simple syntax we're gonNA teach you here shortly. embeds all that stuff for you. So you don't you don't need to worry about.

Our Thoughts ON WWDC 2020

"Hello, everyone. This is David sparks joined by my friend and yours Mr Stephen. Hello Steven David! How are you? Good, I have to admit I. was a little bittersweet this morning watching the keynote. I had a really good time I. Watch it with a bunch of friends, but I didn't watch it with you in the room. where it happens so sad, there were all this year. The first WDC have not been a person since twenty thirteen, so it's a big change. Yeah. That being said. I feel like I've been just as busies if I was there And Apple surprised US this year. They they had a lot more announcements than I expected I. Really expected the snow Leopard announcements. Everybody global pandemic, We had some bugs to fix any way not a whole lot new this year. Yeah, and our Mex- that working at our Max to, but there's a bunch of stuff as we go through our summary of what happened. That caught me off guard. Yeah, so some Meta Real. Quick we recording this. Couple of hours after the keynote, the state of the Union just ended so as this week unfold, so be more information that comes out so this is based on what we know after just a few hours of reading stuff, so the maybe things that we don't get quite right. We don't know that you may know in the future listening this. Please forgive us for the weird. Time shift there. Yes, future you please be generous to us. Yes, I did watch the entire keynote and I watched the entire state of the Union took copious notes and have been doing research, but I do believe and Both of us have installed babies. I've got the Beta on my big IPAD pro, and you've got on your ipad mini, so we we have line research here as well as we talk through the show, an slowly downloading the Mac Os Beta for my laptop, but it's halfway through. It's at a seven hours left sets. That's taking it sweet time. Input on your phone. Already know won't. It won't go on my phone until much much later. I, did I did mission real? Quick before we dive into all of this? Because we've got a few emails about it, Really FM. We have kind of relaunched our membership program and one of the new perks for a lot of the shows including connected another show that I'm on is. Member only versions of the episodes David and I. We are working on ideas for this, but we're not quite ready to to launch anything, but we did want to share that. We are thinking about it. So, you can check out and see what connected of greater doing. Extra segments sort of thing, and we will be listening to feedback if if you guys have stuff that you want to see in sort of a members version of Mac powers, let us know because we are thinking through that and and hope to move into something like that a little bit later this summer. Yeah, WE WANNA. Bring more if you guys wanted, but you know enough. Enough that you have to want it to make it worth the trouble and a lot of the stuff people. We were already doing it. We got a free form. We've got a newsletter we got. We got a lot of this stuff. Already that you get just because we love you, so we're trying to figure out where we fit best. We will have something. Stay tuned. We're doing a show life, which is kind of fun. Yeah, we are with nothing to do super often, but we figured. Hey, it's such a fun week, and because people are at home. We thought we would record this one live so it is live as we. going out to a bunch of people so that that's always a fun funding to. all right, so just want to start at the top. Yeah, we can either go chronologically, or we can kind of pick and choose I'll follow your lead. If you WanNa, do let let's start from the top because they had, they had an order and a plan they saved the most interesting stuff in a lot of ways to the end, because so many changes on the Mac. Yeah, but uh, it was interesting the way they went through today. One of the observations all make about this keynote. If you haven't watched it at home, this was one of the most efficient keynotes I've ever seen apple put on. They were just flying through the segments. There were no silly are demos. There was no game demos. It was like we got this Bam Bam, Bam Bam Bam Bam. Here's a guy from the next platform and. I thought that was good. I liked that part I'd like the format a lot I think it was all pre taped I. Don't think any of that was live. Oh, yeah, definitely. I like that. They were a large number of people who weren't sort of regular. White men that are at the top of Apple. I thought that was really great. And I think they did a really good job with a this is different right, so we see different presenters in different parts of Apple's campus. They sorta played some jokes with that about like the Secret Mac lobbying under the fountain in the Middle Way Underground I got a chuckle. Saw Kevin Lynch in the fitness center I think they did a really good job with this. And while I really do hope that WDC becomes an in person event again in the future when the pandemic subsides I gotta say I liked the way this came together. The first couple of times they did the zoom from one place to the next. I thought it was kind of cheese. And then I'm like Oh this is chemical seen different areas that I may never get a chance to see in person. And also is it just me or has the fitness center done a number and Kevin Lynch? That guys fit now. Yeah, he's got a beard. He's got shaggy hair. I like the new Kevin Lynch yeah. I mean the long pass or the days. He was in fights with apple over flash. Oh I, know! It was, it was great, and it was well represented. They had people of Color. They had women. They had people with disabilities. And it was you know, but it I think in typical apple fashion. These were not people brought up there. Just because of the you know that they were because he their titles you could see. They were people that were working on these projects, and it's great. You know I think that's the way it should be totally agree.

"While it's not yet clear whether facebook ceo mark zuckerberg is going to testify before congress of his own volition cnn reported today the company is strategizing about possible testimony but seibert did say thanks but no thanks this morning to the british parliament's media committee offering to send deputies instead we it stephen beard in london get some context on the european part of this story hello steven hello chi so quickly what is this committee i guess looking into data mining data manipulation and fake news eighteen invited mark zuckerberg to appear after the allegations surfaced about the fifty million facebook users whose data had been abused and exploited during the us presidential election the committee in fact had invited him to appear twice before and been rebuffed so it can't have been that surprised by rebuff number three nevertheless the lawmaker who chairs the committee said he was absolutely astonished berg was refusing to appear given the seriousness of the allegations and he urged the facebook boss to think again do you think zuckerberg has anything to lose by not getting on a plane and going over there they can't force him he could be declared in contempt of parliament and he might then have to reason with an official in stockings called the black rod however he's not a british citizen so he can't be compelled in reputational terms i suppose it's a little damaging but he's already suffered a lot of reputational damage on that side of the pond it's a interesting this because rupert murdoch also not a british citizen there was once summoned to appear before a parliamentary committee over the phone hacking scandal he actually did turn up but he got a bit of a mauling actually and as it happens a protest through a cream pie i remember that i remember that a happy experience but to that end right of absorber clearly wanting to be able to do business both in the uk and and in in the water european market what are the risks of you know in essence by thumbing his nose at the brits does he risk more swift and and substantive regulation of facebook and and all the rest tougher regulation is already on its way the uk information regulator is going to get additional powers very shortly a new e u y data protection law comes into falls in may with multi million dollar fines for companies that don't adequately protect data so the screws are already tightening a.
