Stephen .M. Smith and the Iron Bowl

"Stephen smith welcome back from touchdown. Alabama stephen amit always good to see you and great to have you on the program. So it's the week of the iron bowl you've been high on the tide. Since the first time we talked during the summer. let's start with mag jones because you told us. He was different than that was before the public. In the heisman voters fell in love with him. Absolutely i mean. The young man has been battle tested poise and career. I remember him in the us. Freshmen in two thousand seventeen with the scout team out there throwing bombs and of course coach saban told him stop throwing the ball deep all the time. King looks at cope sabres coach. Tell your defense a check me there so you got a guy with that type about and that type of confidence even check his own coach. Nick sabin that you got yourself a quarterback that can really do some special things. So i knew from mack. Jones the freshman that he was poised to this moment but also seeing the growth that he's made targeted stephen m. smith who stephen m. seems like every every aspect of alabama has gotten better the one that has surprised when people is the is the defense. Because after the ole miss game i i wasn't sure that p golden should be buying green bananas. But what's happened on that side of the ball. The main thing is coke. Sabin and pete goading have done a great job. Simplifying things on times player stink too much. You think about my job and is my teammate. Doing his job. It's the guy in front of me. The guy behind me the guy next to me doing their job. And when you're thinking about so many things of your job is and training your is to be district where confusion comes in so nick. Saban has always been one to say. Do your job and the rest will take care of itself. So she and goading been a great june above of simplifying. The game plan players have done their job. You're seeing more pressure on defense guys stopping the run better. More turnovers created a the big thing here. Paul is essentially omits game. You've looked eleven. Shutout quarters football alabama including a complete game shutout of mississippi state and the team is getting off the theater on third down so a better job of simplifying the game plan and players. You know being concerned about doing their job correctly. It's interesting. we haven't really heard much in the aftermath of jason water when he went down some of the pundits. I remember somebody. Espn said alabama was done. They had no chance of winning the national championship. How has that been dealt with on the team. Because it doesn't seem like and i realized alabama has played a top five team Yet they will seem like they've done quite well without him. I remember a conversation. I had with john. Michie paul about you know. How do you feel. Avoid behind by waddell. He's a one type player. Barry explosive guy would. He got hurt against the volunteers. You heard coach. Sabe say you know. I hurt for college football. Not the fact that saving hearts for alabama. I'm sure he pretty much does but he hurts for college. Football due to people enjoy seeing james waddell on the field. He's fast he's a bottle he's gone. He's energetic he's explosive. He's highly entertaining. Obama has found ways to work. Around this. you've seen slade. Boden return be on kickoffs. Of course he got a twisted ankle against kentucky alabama monitoring jam all week and practice. He should be able to go this week. But we'll see what happens We have seen devante. Smith retiring ponts against kentucky patrick satanic. A second has also field in that role a little bit so save has put he and different guys and that special teams role to try to you know. Fill that void but it's worked out for the most part. It is difficult trying to find that guy that can do know what j. waddell does

Blanket up doll with you the Heisman Watch each week. They have 14 ESPN writers now Alice vote on the Heisman Trophy as if they're voting. Each week on the Heisman Trophy, and here's the top five list right now. Number five Justin Fields corn back from Ohio State number four Trevor Lawrence Korb back from Clemson. He has not played in quite some time number three. Zach Wilson, quarterback for BYU, number two. Mack Jones, quarterback at Alabama and number one quarterback up Florida Kyle Trask this week gets 56 points. And he gets the most first place votes out of the 13 people voting on ESPN dot com. As of right now, on ESPN dot com College, Trask would win the Heisman Trophy. I just don't see how if Mack Jones goes through the season the next three games because they added, ls you back next week and then Arkansas the week after If he goes through the season undefeated. And Alabama's putting up monster numbers every single week that why he wouldn't win. If you don't have Justin Fields, Trevor Laure. It's like I don't see a a one loss quarterback. I know it's not a team award. It's an M V. P award. I get it. I get it. But I think that he's got the numbers in the bigger games, then Kyle Trash does of Florida. Yeah. And you know, we in the twitch chat, ESPN 1000 Chicago. Ah, lot of people think we hate Kyle Trask. We're just putting it out there. He's if the Heisman was today, ESPN dot com would say he would win the Heisman Trophy. I agree watching the two. I think Mack Jones is the better quarterback. Especially if we're projecting out to the NFL level. I think he's the guy, but I understand the numbers support contrast, people really get into numbers. People love the numbers in the twitch chat. I understand it's gonna be a lot of negative commentary about our thoughts on college Trask in the ESPN 1000 twitch that I get. How about this? "Number one to pressure building on on crafts shots discuss it on what they see right now. Replaces the football team right now in that falls on may commit. It's college football live. It's the tuesday edition of college. Football live i'm greg mcelroy. Along with heisman trophy winner desmond howard deaths. We have had a fantastic season of college football. Only a few weeks. And we have a bunch of fantastic matchups to look forward to including that of america's team the indiana hoosiers traveling to take on the ohio state. Buckeyes the indian hoosiers does probably the cinderella story of the college football season their undefeated. What do you know so far about what we've seen from indiana gregg who. I thought that was a basketball school. What's going on here in the big changes taking teams left or right. I'll tell you what the thing that they're most impressed. me with. Indiana hoosiers is just the way that they respond to their coach. Tom allen. I mean you can tell that this team. They genuinely love tom allen his staff. I had a chance to talk to mike. Hart who coaches the running backs and he speaks about how these young men they go out there. They believe in the system they believe in the coach and they give a hundred percent all the time. I'm not saying they're the most talented team in the in the big team. Obviously there's the teeny about the play. Saturday how state but the effort that you get from this team to x the high level of execution of certain place they have short term memory of things go bad they don't linger they doesn't linger they. Don't worry about it. They go right back out there the next play and they handle their business so offensively. This quarterback lefty southpaw. Michael pinnock junior plan very well right now. Dual threat athlete and So anyway i can go on. But they've been the cinderella story so far of the college football season. I'll tell you this. Does we called their game last week. And i got to listen personal against michigan state. Look no one's making michigan state out to be so. I'm not trying to suggest that but this was a team that capitalizes on every single mistake. When michigan state gives the ball up or if they fumbled the ball on the third and short indiana. They get that inch and they become a ruler. They capitalize on your mistakes. Probably as well if not better than any team in college football and they are so good when it comes to forcing turnovers and then also keeping a clean sheet themselves if you actually look at how. They played against michigan state. That was maybe their worst performance all season in regards to ball security offensively you reference panics. He also has to outstanding wide receivers. That you can really trust and tie fry fogel and of course walk failure. Those pounding running back steve. He's got that's kind of the recipe that you might need to be able to pull up. What would be one of the biggest upsets of the college football season however tez however. There's no denying how great the buckeyes are. What have you seen. So far from. The buckeyes has you thinking. There are worthy of that three touchdown favorites status that they have against another undefeated team in indiana and the big ten. Well i guess you could just say. They are who we thought they were. You know i mean at this point. They're just one of the most dominant teams or college football. Obviously it starts with justin feels. People were very excited to see what justin feels will look like in year two under head coach ryan day. And you know he's been brilliant. Start off the season gregg the nebraska game. I think he was like almost perfect. Incompletion was a touchdown. Pass chris alive. They dropped in zone so he came out on fire. He has created a weapons around him though. I mean they. They get some talented geared. Wilson chris alive and some other receivers out there on the perimeter. So this is a very exciting off physically. They can put up some numbers. They're going to just start to accumulate. A budget yards to. But you know. He's a dual threat quarterback who we thought he was. Who's throwing the ball extremely well down. The field now can talk later about there. Intermediate passes. i'm not sure he's a sharp. When it comes to those passes than what thing to look at greg. When you watch ohio state. I was watching them against penn state and i think justin feels gets a lot of credit for passes that are maybe fifty fifty balls but the his receivers coming from a former receiver. They do an outstanding job. Born of getting these passes Getting these contested cat making these contested catches so he gives an excellent pass by just the fields and not looking like home. They're like an excellent catch by the come.

The story of Trevor Lawrence's life-changing summer

"So we just discussed how Trevor Lawrence is influence has been growing this off season I taking on issues of public health and racial inequality. But last month. The very thing that gives Trevor Lawrence his enormous Megaphone College football was put in jeopardy as players in conferences. Having. These discussions about canceling the season. What role in those discussions did Trevor Lawrence play. It was a Sunday night early August enduring. Trevor. Together again. There at travers fiancee's apartment and rumours are starting to pick up steam that some of the biggest most powerful conferences in college football the Big Ten PAC twelve that they're seriously considering, postponing their fall season, and this is coming at the end of a week. When of PAC twelve players have released a statement on the Players Tribune using the Hashtag we are united. And they've threatened to out fall CAM even opt out of games unless the conference mixed their demands for fair treatment and safety regulations and less the conference addresses concerns over racial justice, and meanwhile on a nearly parallel track, you have players the cost, the country, trevor, and fluted tweeting the Hashtag. We want to wait to express their desire to keep the seasonal live. So, in the Sunday night when it feels like college ball is teetering, it's actually dairying who decides to reach out to Dylan bowls. One of the players the Pactel's we are United Movement because endearing mine Houston gain. If we all join together the players in the we are united movement and the players in the we want to play movement that would be undeniably powerful for players who don't have concrete power who don't have a real seat at the table at least not yet their collective voice with the really hard to ignore because truly. So many of these fires want the same thing they want to play football this fall, they just want to do it in a safe responsible way. Dylan Daring, trevor they get on a three way facetime called a hash all this out to make sure they're all on the same page and that very quickly evolves into a zoom call with a dozen or so some of the biggest names in college football right Justin fields chew behind nausea. Harris And matter of thirty minutes, they agree to roll out a list of demands from this new fused Mecca Movement. It was amazing. How quickly we all got on the same page put something together I feel like the majority was getting spoken for. And we were like, Hey, we WANNA play. We want it to be safe but we do to take a watt mandated and universal safety procedures for Covid nineteen and they want to form players association. And it pretty much the stroke of midnight. These players, Tweeden Unison. But it's trevor naturally whose tweet is hurt the loudest he's re tweeted some fifteen thousand times including one quote tweet from President Donald Trump, and it's just a few days later actually that someone from the White House reaches out to Amanda Lawrence Trevor Lines mom letting her know that the president would like to get in touch with trevor. So hold on. So he has the president of the United States listening to him. Now let alone all of his peers across college football. What was that conversation with Donald Trump? Like? You know I would have loved to be a fly on whatever wall in whichever room that phone call took place the president has said really that trevor just reiterated his desire to play this season but trevor for his part hasn't divulged too much about that phone call. Conversation it was good I mean we just talked about kind of the whole we talked about that. We WanNA play like how's it going? How's it looking for the season and? president trump was just saying, yeah, I think our country needs college football and. then. Some small talk. Yes. We a little bit about what was going on in my life and vice versa. So that was pretty much the conversation though trevor is twenty years old the president of the United States wanted to speak to him. That is remarkable crazy. No matter which way you cut it. So. Let's recap here Halley Grossman because since March Trevor, Lawrence Age Twenty has faced pressure to help mitigate a global pandemic fight racism save the College football season display a level of political savvy and or gamesmanship that is obviously well beyond his years. So what else can you possibly be asked to do at this point? I mean look putting your stamp of approval which he's done on a list of demands that includes creating players. Association is a big deal. That's a radical way to reimagined that amateurism model that governs. College football right now but I think what this summer has shown is that trevor doesn't plan to quiet down you just a few days ago a whole lot of guys that original zoom call we talked about reconvened because they revealing again from a police shooting of a black man again, and so in the days after Jacob, Blake was shot. Trevor and Darien and Dylan, and a whole host of others talked once again to hammer out ways to help to draw attention to the issue and hopefully bring change. Trevor Lawrence football season is starting tomorrow and if all goes according to plan. He's GonNa win the heisman before becoming the first overall pick in next year's NFL draft teams have been salivating over his talent. There have been rumors that teams might even want to tank for Trevor Lawrence this season. So the question really that is, why is he even putting himself out there like this? Why even play the season? I mean that is the question, right? We have seen plenty a high profile opt-outs this season jomar chase at Lsu. Mike Parsons at Penn State today. Oregon. These are first round top ten NFL draft guys but no one literally nobody has less to lose by not playing the twenty twenty football season than Trevor Lawrence. are in a player having a job borough like. Or I don't know an asteroid hitting the earth, his Cossacks to go number one overall are safe, and at the same time, no one has less to gain by paddling the status quo or shaking up the current system than trevor does this system works just fine for him? He is a young white man. He's a young white quarterback, and so I asked Amanda, his mother that seems washing. Why? Why do all this? I put himself out there and she said something interesting she said look. there. are players out there who do need to even if trevor doesn't and there are people out there for whom the status quo and the current system don't work even if it works for him and he understands that now probably better than he ever has and he just wants to help. That's really it know told me one of his goals for the senior only meeting because he wanted everyone to understand that unless everyone is good no one is good and trevor, his best friend took that to heart. Of the day, there's so much division in our country. Just word of some people that WanNa see people together, WanNa see people love each other and I think that's where a lot of the things I do. It stems from that just wanted to see people happy together not divided. With all this pressure now from all of these different places in our country. Landing Atop. Trevor Lawrence's shoulders. What are you personally expect from him when the season starts? Because of the ways in which Trevor Lawrence has stepped onto center stage this summer it's almost easy to forget what it is. That gives him that stage in the first place, he is extremely good at his job. Term Lawrence is an excellent quarterback. Making predictions in two, thousand, twenty, hundred, probably a fools errand. "Who was an awesome college player like he's deserved. New deserve the duffle bags bags of cash that were that were toss this this verges on this probably is in the to good category but jalen ramsey. Oh yeah jalen alan ramsey as i'm kinda good idea like that matters no no. That's that's just adversity. That has been over okay but he's he's good enough that it doesn't matter adder. He's good jalen ramsey. If any made a retrovirology ramsey might be the n._f._l. It is likely work done. Yeah no work one hundred blake war done like i don't like yeah you give him whatever award you want. Lawton rules a florida player who if i had to pick like people's champ going way back redel anthony because redel anthony <hes> one look was not scared of anyone including people he should have been scared of and to you celebrated a touchdown on national television by pulling out imaginary shotgun and then emptying into the alabama secondary after scoring tedium in the s._e._c. championship game perfect yeah i was thinking about how tennessee such an unfunded football program in general but every season there's not a season in recent memory that i can't think of having a very strong candidate out there. I mean we're shawn golden. My god i mean holly. Y'all have a we have tyler bray who should probably be some kind of saint. Can we name the trophy after him. You also erin foster if you have a running back a starting running running backs spirit accent entire interview as a dinosaur. He's a people's heisman candidate. I got i was here underrated for weirdos so this is what i was just thinking like we have this reputation as being just like this stayed cranking. Tom michigan state type football but the more the further ethic back the more employing them pinky johnson man yup johnson. I was on john. John henderson sean hands off in addition it just being like no i was thinking of the part of when in pre games when he would climb into the student's section and lead chance of blood makes the grass grow yeah. It's just a big old psychotic grizzly of a man right real sweet dude like real cool bellaigue precious but game yeah derrick barnett. The guy who i was like i bet is that dude has is not physically gifted nothing about him and yet there are nine of him. I think i think like he's the only only player i know of who could actually teleport because i never actually saw him like out of position but i never really saw him run. It was a very button mashing. The style of football yet tennessee is that actually may be the best distributor because the next play..

"High profile school and being on national television every week to make it into people's heisman consideration consideration anyway i have. I have another. I have another for u._s._c. and that would be a door. A jackson. Remember <unk> adora jackson because like in in addition to being a very charming and versatile player right who really couldn't rack up enough sort of he couldn't rack up the given the way he played at the corner and then they sort of these punt returns right <hes> he couldn't build up enough of a profile to become like a statistically super bursik different player in terms of awards right but adoring jackson also this is like when he got dislike he got slipped and fell while on a route that john ross john ross faked him on a slant and went deep in two thousand sixteen which that happens right. It happens to good players <hes>. I'm the best part is that after that play happened. John ross on twitter or jackson on twitter. You're reacted with like l._l. Happens bra and then like you know crying emoji crying emoji crying emoji. It's the little things things like that that gets you consideration and make you an an interesting player at sort of an otherwise like excellent football monolith yet. Here's a here's another one. I would throw <music> out from a big school denard robinson. Ooh i think so. I mean we've agreed carl. Jones would have been eligible right right and i it would have been a front runner so like if ohio states eligible almost everyone is eligible it. Let's go straight to the top here. Yeah notre dame oh golden tate what have been people's like. I'm sorry but it one to the michigan solly argument yeah this. This is a this is another example of this is actually a great follow example because this is another <hes> this is another instance instance of a player overcoming being at a famous football school to vault himself quite literally in this case into people's eyes link consideration yeah i would also so maybe include quinton nelson that but i i base that strictly on a series of cut ups cole cubelic did of him that was like it was like twenty snaps of quinten nelson taking people's souls on blocks and then just being like a giant old doboy looking hammer of of a man on the sidelines so i might that's valid. I think yeah like that's the equivalent of high stepping touchdown raising. I would have also said lewis snacks mostly because half the nickname irish cha. I'm actually embarrassed. I didn't think of louis next first because <hes> do you guys remember the. I don't think it's up anymore. Purdue you guys remember the love letter youtube video he made to coline cereal with which was living lounging seductively on what appeared to be a dorm bunk bed lip synching to god bless the broken road while staring at kashi. Yeah see you can do this with notre dame now a bigger challenge. It's remained because of bigger than notre dame. Yeah no bigger challenge for notre dame just because of how restrictive they've been under nick saban his alabama like can you pick anyone out of alabama you you go under nick sabin specifically. Well yeah like that's hard right like you can make i'm sure you can pick people out of alabama not well under statement but i mean who was the offensive lineman who designed video games or built his own gaming. Oh yeah <hes> he builds his built like a gaming rig jones miss. We're forgetting where forgetting some quarterback that ran himself afoul of nick in them uh eight a._j. Mccarron close yeah. No no no. You're missing. You're missing l. Where i'm forgetting somebody super obvious okay no. I'm feeling who was i've i've. I've got this memory. My head of some player running afoul coker coker is is the odds on favorite from alabama for the people's heisman because everyone's sort of forgot who he was. He was just this giant remember. He came in <hes> in a in a crisis because when alabama loss w that was oldness the second time the starter was cooper bateman cooper batman comper batman copper yeah and and i like how we still have these colin responses.

"That's a lot of memories and that also means <hes> the n._f._l. Didn't come calling after for three right which is important. <hes> and third is his name as junky. Which is <hes> fun to second. It's if he's just like charles occasion keaton yeah it's not it's not as good charlie keaton right right <hes> yeah. It's fair to say that the couch is the most important written part of the college football t._v. Watchers home right yes because the couches where your foot goes people are probably thinking what about the the roof and the ceiling doesn't go there. I'm from west virginia. You don't need a roof to watch football. You need a couch if you if you can get a roof too great but you gotta start with the couch and you might as well start with the borough couch. Let me tell you why these suckers naturally scratch and stain resistant. If you have an animal in your house and an animal i mean a spencer hall. I was gonna say they have sturdy hardwood frames. You don't need at some cheapo couch. That's gonna get destroyed when he plops down on it. No do i have to cover my current couch with blankets like some kind of poor person who's ashamed of their furniture. When spencer comes over where to watch games yes. I do what i prefer not to do that. We'll sure but i don't have staff scratching stain-resistant fabric do i. They even have soft nontoxic foam cushions which is important because we'll spencer accidentally eat a couch cushion he might yeah we'll eat anything like a goat spencer pouched russia and now they're offering them in leather as well if you want if you want to go that route spencer does not deserve leather but you can offer that to them if you want and there's a built in usb charger because you know it. Spencer never has a way to charges phone. Wait what like in the way like an arm rest like in the couch yeah. This is not a a bit. I've never seen a couch with a u._s._b..

"He was never under appreciated yeah. You know like if i were to give you under college anyway you know like iowa state. When i'm gonna speak to your heart's here troy davis he was at the heisman he got votes. He's like five to right right but a dervish just an unstoppable whirlwind of a man paul field he he gets prime consideration iteration for people's heisman retroactively who was mississippi state's little bowling ball running back from <hes> played with that prescott. I can't remember i. I don't know who you're talking about. That just reminded me of rennie curran at georgia would probably also be another one that i earned their right yeah but you're you're talking about like five six five six. It's like thunder wonder like ben described as a bowling ball out because this is going to drive me insane. It will drive it will drive you mad. Please because it's also gonna drive me mad by the way people's heisman. You're talking about a particularly charismatic like pairing of running back and quarterback. That's a great place to go ahead and and look for people's heisman candidates because you might have a quarterback goes onto the n._f._l. And you might have a running back you rarely have both in a good duo and when that happens look at the one who didn't go to the pros didn't pan out in the n._f._l. That's probably the person dominate. I have a real good nominate nominee money in that sort of format for science found this running back okay his josh robinson yeah yeah. I don't remember him at all. Five nine a two fifteen how he he got <hes> about sixteen hundred yards from scrimmage and twelve touchdowns for that twenty before two thousand fourteen mississippi state team which if memory serves was the first team to ever get the number one ranking by the college football playoff committee. Wow there's actually the state of mississippi figures in the the retroactive people's heisman that <hes> i discussed out before the program <hes> at one point remember in the top three we had five we had mississippi state and ole miss and the world shockingly did not enter armageddon phase at that point somehow did either of them make the playoff now. Nothing did not know how was it because one knocked out in the egbo. Et didn't help but probably wasn't happening. Either didn't didn't really help and a was it also by the way just a relatively meaningless win for that other team yeah on the board. It was pretty meaningless considering potential outcomes was it meaningless in the heart never never i don't know everybody how we doing ruin jason kirk goddamn nowhere i was i was i was detained by a project. I had to wrap up and <hes> also oh putting out the fires of the read option watched grid where eleven of eleven people who've contacted me so far went to go back to the way it was. I have an uprising on my the hands <hes> dealing with conservative factions who can't handle change so i think i'm going to be forced into forced into reverting it to its twenty eighteen in previous form canceled. I have going on i i. I am a democratic. Leader is what it is coward. Our public has decided in the spirit of the people's heisman. The public has decided. I had a comment and a question. I've tried to listen to keep up. Did we decide that. Heisman finalists are are ineligible sociable for the people's eisman for the most part although i would like to throw in an exception for somebody like a defensive player who gets a token invite <hes> mike the only defensive players linemen like who we know don't actually have a chance to win but like an dominant sue would not qualify because a had like a decent case that year and be probably too good right writing. Sue is the hands down winner for that year. He didn't even get invited did he. To the heisman ceremony was he invited. I don't remember if he was or not..

"He's a we'll talk. See how this season because he's on the watch list for sure i will say this you know how the path to heaven is but narrow for the rich man right path to the people's heisman real squeaky narrow for northwestern grad right right all right my last one rodriguez blankenship. Maybe maybe two good yeah. He was pretty good. All you really did besides be good work glasses. Okay what about what about wisconsin's kicker from a couple years ago rafael galeano nee. I think nameless yeah aka big chief yes. That's a better one yeah. That's a that's a much better one especially because the people's heisman will not depend on but we'll definitely reward quirk of abnormal size in either direction yeah right or flare so bonus bonus entry then brad wing people's eyes one absolutely yeah okay brad wing actually brad wing probably would want people's heisman that year yeah like i would have had no problem turning the whole thing over him because <hes> because the minute that you get a touchdown called back for taunting on a fake punt as an aussie punter l._s._u. Consider the layers. I just gave you an yeah. That's that's a. That's a tear that i'm going to go ahead and put on my plate. We'll do it okay thank you. That's a that is actually very helpful because now i now i have a good sense of like yeah the it's basically wait this very specific intersection of good not great fun and <hes> a little quirky personality the i mean okay now i will say this you can be real close to great grade wing was terrific. You have great college football football player ryan were there were situational circumstances to brad wings greatness by which i mean having a touchdown called back right right as a special teamer <hes> that transcended <hes> due to their like impact that transcended his actual skill which is very high hi right but like randy mosses far too good to be a people's heisman right like when you are actually at the heisman ceremony you you've you've sort of trans. You've sort of eliminated yourself from people's heisman contract like ran well unless see the i i'm not. There's a blanket protocol. We can put over everything because the exception that i would put to say heisman ceremony. Proviso is a defensive player who gets a token invitation nations the heisman ceremony right yeah who's who's who's who's like our best example of that of somebody who could appear here at both correct right but who's yeah who's like a like <hes> honey badger. Would he be close to that. Yeah matthew be close to that mock mount moss's very close to that because of the route he took right like he he was just destroying people at marshall right wrongdoing so with like immense flair. I think he's really close to it. I think like any number air-raid quarterbacks. If you went back and looked like oh god he threw for five thousand on yards in like eight touchdowns hair all y'all you know he warlike a <unk> christmas sweater before that was entirely to comment yeah. That's like graham harrell or b._j. Simon's like yeah. I think that's like you could definitely have any of them there. You know i would i would include like another player who to me like you know if i would give you a prototypical guy. <hes> you know eric dungy. Eric dungy at syracuse was crate. Eric dungy did some things that nope nope. <unk> should do in any sport right at quarterback yet. He was brilliant on his own terms and statistically pretty good so i think what we're trying any do with people's highlands. Give you somebody who is under appreciate who is charismatic. Who is you know generally beloved by their team or at least respected and feared yet that is where i would that is where i would put up a fence era roadblock in front of the mosque thing..

Give me the money money and meet welcomed at the university of texas. Eh notice notice money meat. We didn't say anything about ten wins. Did we didn't say it darn thing about ten wins. We have <hes> the topic today of my favorite thing which is trying to celebrate college football players. Who are <hes> that guy or who were just brilliant college football players who i don't know maybe that was it. Y'all maybe maybe you're just a college great and then maybe go on to just have a perfectly respectable successful life started family. Get a real job. Maybe not get a real job and just open a bar right real job. It's a hard job so very hard job right really than our jobs. Totally maybe go to maybe you go pro and something else is what we're saying okay. That's that's who we want to talk about cause for years a wanted to have this and i think we're going to build it. We might need your help and building it. It's the people's heisman titles a little problematic. Y'all cuz turns out heisman trust. It's kind of their thing. They're a little little sensitive about its use. They don't like it a salad. Make money off of it mentioned it or even talk about who you're gonna vote for before you do it. Whiches che's as a heisman voter. I disagree with the policy but they don't like you to talk about it. That's how sensitive they are about it but the concept needs that to you just sort of frame what we're talking about here. Are we talking about players who were great in some instances yeah yeah in some instances. We're talking about players who were legitimately great in college. Are we talking about people who were greatest pros probably not probably not this is probably the peak for y'all right like he could win the actual heisman but if i had to give you a prototype for that this year right i mean fleet by franks flipping. Flipping franks is going to have a good year. Statistically speaking fleet by franks probably won't be starting for the new york jets. Actually that's a terrible comparison now they they. They've kind of got it together but you could say the cincinnati bengals. <hes> yeah might start for the bengals a couple of games. "Brad Edwards was once not just once but was seventeen times over the researcher at the Heisman presentation, which means Brad Newsome information that he had to keep top secret. Brad. What is this? What is your history here with the Heisman trophies presentation? Yeah. Just to give people an idea of how this works behind the curtain, obviously. When the winner is announced there's a speech, and then Chris Fowler comes on and deliver some information about the voting you see a breakdown in Fowler seems to know a whole lot about it, which is unusual for a guy who just learned like everyone else who won. Well, the reason he did or he does know that is because someone gives him a card with that information. And and that was my job. And so what happens is when the when the show first comes on the air a few minutes in Representative from Deloitte, which is the accounting firm, which tabulates the Heisman votes comes into the truck. The production truck where they build the graphics and at a certain point, maybe about fifteen minutes in we're given permission to look at the results and start building whatever the pertinent graphics are that we need for the end of the show, and at that point, no one is allowed to leave the truck because everyone inside that truck knows who won except one person has to leave because someone's gotta go give Fowler that information that was my job. And so I would write this information on. The cards, and then I would leave the truck go inside the theater, actually when I first started doing it. It was at the downtown athletic club. It went back that far. And so I would go in and for a moment for a few minutes. I was the only person in that building outside of a few employees have Deloitte who knew who the Heisman winner was. And then at some point in that in that break right around the time that the the guy goes up to open the envelope. I would give the cards to Fowler. And he would know as well. But it was pretty cool. Like you go in there. And and you know, you're one of maybe like five or six people in the world who know who the winner most years. Everybody knows who the winner is even when it's not official. But every now, and then there's one like we have this year where there's drama, and it feels pretty cool to be on the inside couple of questions here as follow ups to that story. Brad who is the researcher tonight. And do you have is number. That is a good question. I'm not sure I'm not sure who it is today. I did not laugh. I mean, I'm serious. I am. I want wanna break this news ESPN radio scooping ESPN TV that would be. Yeah. I if I'm not even sure they do it the same way that it's the same, you know, same protocol. Is it always has been? I'm thinking about the movie the sting where they got the horse race results just to beat earlier than they read them. So that they were able to fix bets in their off track betting. I'm just wondering Brad if you had any way to maybe call somebody between the truck and the stage or have like a signal like, okay. If I have three fingers up is this guy in one finger up is that guy. I mean, it was that even possible to happen that you would never do that. But my mind, I'm thinking this information can make you rich. If you don't get caught any anyone who would accept more than like, a fifty dollar bet on something like this. At this stage of the game is just stupid. And I wouldn't think they would've. Stayed in business this long if they stuff like that. So you're you're saying I need to learn more about gambling. Whereas I mean, I guess so I don't know ton about it. But I would I would think that something like this voted on like the closer, you get the more and more people are going to know who won. Let's also say that it's a good thing that there was no Twitter really back then because Brad really could have gotten in trouble. He can't stay off that it's college game day Heisman special on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Hey quickly. We're gonna take a break here about ninety seconds. Both you guys. I think collar Murray should win because I think he had he into a were both elite from an efficiency standpoint. But I think because he did it over so many more plays. And I realized it wasn't his fault that he didn't get more plays. It was because his team was that much more complete. But because of the total body of work, given the. The the volume of plays. I I would I would go with calamari the bread. I wonder how many of the nine hundred some voters even know that that's what I worry about. I kind Marie should win collar Marie will win. And I'm I'm a little concerned about published reports the ten percent or so of the votes were submitted before the championship games. Let let's let's just say ninety percent of those ten percent go to to us who is in catch up mode. And then you look at geographically will Cuyler maybe split with Dwayne and some of those regions. We'll see again, it's northeast southwest south mid Atlantic midwest and far.

"To the MC football podcast talk with the Heisman floats and Thursday night football. Now, we're going on to another topic regarding the heismans I had this Mark. What how do you see these three finalists as NFL ready DC them doing better than the NFL? Do you see them more time to get better the NFL? What do you see here? It's a good question. So to these three are eligible to go into the pros this year Haskins can declare also Cairo Murray can decide to go to the NFL. He has options as we know that he's a baseball prospect. That's already been signed by the Oakland A's. So he can choose to play baseball. Now in terms of how they look at the next level. I think our Murray declared he might be the first quarterback taken. Now, I get it his size it's concerning. But hey, Russell Wilson is showing everybody that size isn't everything. You don't need to be six five in the NFL to be a great quarter. Bac cower Murray is very Russell Wilson. Like to me. He's smart. He's accurate, and he has deadly deadly mobility. I think he's being kind of overload as a prospect. I think scouts still fall in love with the traditional pocket passer the traditional size. You know what I mean? Yeah. Paxton Lynch, PECS Lynch was. I mean, he was looked at very highly gushing over Paxton Lynch at the combine like oh my God. This guy's six six has a can look at the foot word..

"So, you know, I I feel I'm a better person for having been around the guys that are you know, that are in that fraternity and got to spend the time that I have so far. So you know, it's a lifelong thing you can go back to the rest of your life. So definitely embrace it. And how do you give them advice for like just the media circus that there are about to have to go through? Because like I said you are good in front of a camera. Good in front of a microphone other guys might not be as comfortable and you had to do stuff like late night shows in good Morning, America. How do you tell them to prepare for the the media that they're about to get? I mean, I had fun with it. And I think these guys you look at Tyler the way is got drafted already. You know, his dad is who he is. And and you know, obviously, he's he's plenty able to handle this. And I think the same for two he plays for the best team in the country mic savings, the head coach much media as much as you could possibly imagine. So oh, this only strengthened that not only makes it even crazier for forever. So that's a cool thing. Casey, like all on never forget, like even Cleveland like the year in two after when he did in the NFL, Johnny had his mom. I should say how did on the actual Heisman Trophy on Hodie him stand in his apartment, and like in his place, and then in the basement of this kind of game room when he had a house in Cleveland. And I mean, there's nothing like it. I've seen it all we'd walk into his house. And every time I'm over. I'm like holy shit. I like goosebumps walking by the thing. I remember, Johnny. We'd have guests over to your condo there or at your house. And it's like they walked by their kind of walking today look over and see the thing. It's like kinda presence in the room. Casey. You're like drawn to this thing and people he like look at it and point like, oh my God. I the actual ice been like, oh, yeah. Get up get a picture with it like bananas, man. It's such a cool thing forever. And no one can ever take that away from where's your hyphen right now about to ask where is it? Currently. It's entirely so they make one obviously give you one. And then they give the school one right one school gets one. And I get one I mean, and I know the one an image as you walked by the windows of the bright complex, and there's like a spotlight on it. There's no way you can walk by that building without seeing it. I remember where anytime you he was between places in Cleveland. And and I was like we were moving a bunch of stuff. And I was like I will legitimately take the Heisman and bring it's all like all highs that we don't want to just leave that even the move somehow, someway, he didn't let me get away with it. But if I would have been still be in my office, but maybe we could get you a smaller replica on EBay. I doubt that would be nice that we can work on that. Yeah. We'll work on that. So the Heisman Trophy ceremony this weekend? Johnny you think it's going to be Cuyler e B M, assuming you think it's going to be Cuyler as well. I do I called it for the last two months. I think he's special. I think he deserves it. And yeah. I think it's going to be taught Cuyler I think it's gonna be too. I don't necessarily think it should be after what we saw this weekend. I do believe that Kyle probably made a better case. And I've I'm a huge Kyla Mary fan been watching. I just feel like to a lot of people that are voting are probably gonna look at just kind of the whole body of work in the team Alabama is but it wouldn't surprise me. Either way. The only thing that would surprise me as if somehow Dwayne Haskins snuck in there, but there's just no way that's going to happen. I think it'll be I think it'll be a close race..

"I felt quarterback heisman trophy winner same high school same coaches same drills same program everything it's it's a culture when you create a culture somewhere that's when you get repetitive repetition and you find out the l we can we can replicate guys i mean everybody's doing exactly the same we aren't making klay soldiers here but we can instill same values and same beliefs insane work ethic in everyone our players and then they'll have their individualities obviously the have their individual strengths things that are better at in those things that they're not as good at there's obviously everybody there's different positions football that goes that saying but speaking to get somebody like to follow into vision where he can be that good and now he's coming into the season and now going back to my main point which was like why do you think is going to pick what he's gonna do right now why would you do that why would he do that while bobby put that on jalen hurts what would he put that onto you don't have to pick right now we all kind of know in the back of our heads anyways gonna shock the world and just all of a sudden star jalen hurts he's gonna transfer anyways if you if you don't pick him i mean honestly i think we've best it probably be in the best interest of to find out i mean jalen hurts too early because jalen hurts finds out early enough that he's starting he'll have more time to figure out where he's gonna go after that so or or even if he still wants to transfer so i mean that's all that's all kind of up in the air but i mean nick let him play out let them get through at least a little bit of training a little bit of training camp or dislike preseason workouts with the college ones called james whatever they call that but have to work it out a little bit more likely to couldn't really do much entering practice at the broken hand but the fact that you you didn't see any oh two broke his hand i'm sorry he lost his chance like no the kids to could do that and he's he's a heisman trophy favor this year that's kind of what we're doing this i two savings has wanted to talk about two for while they're getting a little tangents about two though where he expected to win the heisman obviously expected but definitely a possibility we don't know if he's starting so we can't say expected but if he does start then in public will be expected for him to win this hour elliott heavy heavy favourite to be just like his mentor just like the guy he went to the same high school as and and is emulating to be that's margaret marotta who won the heisman with the organ dex just a handful of years ago so good good looking for to hopefully he gets that i'm wanting to start i like watching him play i've watched a lot of jalen hurts just didn't really do he's he's not really thrower he's a runner he's a great writer he's honestly i don't know he doesn't wanna be running back blah blah blah honestly be like a little i don't i don't know know i don't know what you could go be receiver be like a little extra seaver something like that taibbi kill i mean your i mean i don't know if you're quite fast enough you little bulky but he's got the allusive nece to do that but you you wanna be a quarterback you want to have the ball on your hands i don't knock people who i don't wanna be like lamar jackson he wants to be quarterback who was all on his hand he's good at that so people who don't wanna leave quarterbacks in that's pretty sweet all right next one moved go over a couple of running backs that are heisman heisman trophy hopefuls as well as a couple other guys throughout the show and then we'll give you my week one predictions we'll go through actually a lot of the top twenty five match ups for week one we talked about a lot of the matchups in general but i really didn't pick who thought was a win so we'll do that in the final segment after we go through about each of our heisman favorites throughout these next two segments in the show all right we'll be right back.
