S. in which he could give up a part of his nuclear arsenal in exchange get sanctions relief and so he signaled that he was going to focus on building up his country's military and so for the past months we've just seen many instances of North Korea pressuring the south's not being the self testing rockets and artillery rejecting offers of humanitarian aid criticizing cooperation between Seoul and Washington and that military alliance and at the same time many analysts say this is a return to an old playbook it resorts to distractions to distract from economic hardships at home does the north Korean playbook have some mother of provocations and welcome young has signaled that it will go back on twenty eighteen agreements to reduce military tensions that they're no longer bound by moratoriums on testing nuclear weapons and strategic missiles but experts think they may not go far that far is back to you know the the days of fire and fury of twenty seventeen because that could hurt China on whom they're sort of relying for an economic lifeline has said relations with the US and South Korea sour Anthony thanks for the update you're welcome Steve NPR's Anthony Kuhn speaking after North Korea exploded a building near the demilitarized zone with South Korea president trump's nominee to lead the top consumer protection agency goes before the Senate today Nancy Beck is a toxicologist she directs chemical regulation for the EPA but many scientists and public health officials say she is not a good choice to protect consumers here's NPR's Rebecca Hersher to explain the consumer product safety commission handles recall safety labels and accident reports for more than fifteen thousand types of products everything from baby toys to dishwashers to sports equipment and the president's nominee to chair the commission Nancy back has been in Washington DC a long time under the bush and Obama administrations she worked for an office within the White House and used her toxicology expertise to help federal agencies figure out how to assess health risks Heidi king was a colleague yes she's brilliant and really very committed to the best possible science but many scientists disagree a group of more than ninety leading scientists signed a letter opposing backs nomination to lead the consumer product safety commission arguing that she quote consistently disregards scientific best practices favors chemical manufacturers and puts vulnerable populations in harm's way Daniel Rosenberg works on toxic chemical policy at the natural resources defense council she's got long career in record of working to weaken health protections and consumer protections from toxic chemicals for example he says in the mid two thousands of back was part of a team that drafted new guidelines for how federal agencies like the EPA and the department of energy should use scientific studies to inform their policies the guidelines focused in part on uncertainty in scientific studies before the report was published an expert team at the National Academy of sciences reviewed it they described it alternately as fundamentally flawed and simplistic they said it was a serious concern and that the panel unanimously called for that bulletin to be withdrawn which it was the guidelines were never published backs boss at the time says it wasn't a failure asking scientists to weigh in on the proposed policy is a good thing even if the feedback is negative thanks next job was at the American chemistry council the major lobbying group for chemical companies the group into CS degree supports her nomination from there president trump put back in charge of chemical regulation at the environmental protection agency there she's overseen a push to limit the types of scientific research available to policymakers a change that the editors of the top scientific research publications say is dangerous to public health that has also weakened delayed or blocked bands on a host of hazardous chemicals including a paint stripper called methylene chloride which is responsible for at least fifteen deaths when it's concentrated in a closed space the chemical causes people to suffocate so my brother.

"Are DND skin. Doyle, I'm Jeff anninsky dime. Big Bill oil, by the way, I'm shocked when I read this that I had to share my thoughts on it itself on condole page Bill, and I had told you couple of weeks back when the story broke about the guy that was it sounded like they were saying accidentally set on fire. In a prank gone wrong by his friends. This is even how the police were framing this. They had a direct quote where they had said, it was a prank gone, terribly terribly wrong. Okay. He's now talking and he was horrifically injured this more than thirty percent of his body. Third degree burns. He can't work for a year. He's all messed up. No feeling in his fingers. If you take a look at this story, you will learn what he says what the victim says happened that night full different. Oh, this does not sound like a prank whatsoever. And I cannot get my head around. How anybody could ever have been friends with him and have done what this victim says was done to him. If you're not friends don't even do that to an enemy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. True. True that this was like just so depraved, but check that out. There are other stories up there as well on. On the page and nj one zero one five dot com. So there's a. There's an agency federal agency National Highway Traffic Safety Administration along the Ad Council. And they are they are launching a campaign this week and the campaign is to convince people that smoking marijuana and being high while driving is not a good idea. They're saying that you shouldn't drive. We. Now to me, and I'm sure many of you disagree, and that's fine. It's kind of what we're hoping for. That's kind of why the station exists. But to me. It seems like why would you need a campaign to explain that to people isn't this the ultimate man splaine that being high on weed might not be a good idea when you're driving. Heidi king deputy administrator of of nitsa says people because it doesn't affect them the same way as alcohol think that they drive safer. But in fact, it's still risky. She said the straight to our newsroom, New Jersey one point five, so she's even recognizing that many people feel that they actually improve their driving skills. She is arguing with you saying that this is not true. We wanna know what you feel about this. If you have ever done it how did you feel driving? If you do it all the time. Is it a matter of whether you do it all the time you were daily smoker versus if you're an occasional smoker. Is it only really dangerous if you are that occasional smoker. If you smoke daily, the have such tolerance that you feel that you're in a separate category, and that you can handle it. This is a major major sticking point for some people in the legislature regarding the passage of legal marijuana here. I know a lot of what got hung up and has stalled the whole thing is this business about exonerating records. Yes. This is certainly on the minds of some people as far as is this gonna increase traffic accidents in New Jersey. So what is your opinion about your ability drive when you're actively high not now in the THC is in your system from free days ago, not saying that I'm saying you're actively high from weed how do you feel you can drive one eight hundred two eight three one zero one point five and isn't the whole point of smoking the weed to in some way, alter your e out reality. I know people say well just comes me down. But isn't that kind of same thing as slowing your reaction times making your reflexes a tad off? I mean, he wants pot smoke pot. I don't care if no dog in the fight. But to tell yourself that you can drive the same or better. I think kind of belies the whole point getting high in the first place, I agree. And and again, we're not trying to sound judgmental. Really not. I mean, both of us have talked about this at length. And it's at the point now that the whole legalisation arguments, it almost feel silly to talk about they're talking about it again that maybe this month is a fifty fifty chance. Senate president Steve Sweeney was saying that it's almost like I think people are getting tired of you and thinking about it since they failed us before. But anyway in talking about it both Bill, and I have said, yes, go ahead. Legalize it tax it regulated. That's fine. Stop making criminals out of people. It's just that. We both agree that the one thing just like alcohol. The one thing that you shouldn't do is drive when you're oughta. I don't think it's too much to ask. So we're not being judgmental. And it's funny. What you said that if you're if you're if you're smoking it to have a change in you, then why would that change not also happened with all of your reflexes and everything it's funny? You say that because the campaign it's called if you feel different you drive different make sense if you feel different you drive different. And it's so true. You know, they're noting the things you said that marijuana Consolo your reaction time it can impair your judgment of distance decrease coordination. Because again, if you like you said if if you're using it to calm yourself down. Well, it's also calming your central nervous system. It. That's another way you could say you could argue that some of the way of saying deaden it a bit. And and you do that at all. And write your reaction time. Mike. Suffer. So, you know, I'm like, it doesn't even matter to me if you're like a daily smoker, and you're so used to this and you do this every day for for fifteen years, and you haven't had an accident..

"You folks and the Ad Council. Tell us more about it. What does it mean? If you feel different you drive different. Well, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration together with the Ad Council. Are raising awareness of the risks of driving impaired. You know, what I'm cannabis and marijuana product can impair, and we know that as many as a third of young adults in Colorado say that they use and many of those will use and drive. It's dangerous because decision making slowed. Decision making impaired marijuana cannabis product user may have trouble with depth perception, for example. So this campaign is letting folks know that he okay to make a rideshare decision or have another person driver, just stay home. But it's risky. It's dangerous and it's legal to get behind the wheel and drive impaired by cannabis or marijuana. Heidi you making a real emphasis in our state in Washington and California pots legal. We are. This is a nationwide campaign, but we see an increased crash risk both with fatalities and injuries in those states where there's greater access and more usage. So in particular in Colorado, and Washington, and increasingly and other states where marijuana's becoming more available. We want folks to know this is not about us. This is about make a safe driving decision. You know in market research users, tell us they think they drive perfectly fine. They say they sometimes think they dress better. But research also shows. That their decision making a slowed, and it is worse. So when something happens on the road, maybe somebody comes into the road or the car in front of you stop. You don't wanna be? Hi, you're going to have a crash we want people to be safe have someone else. Drive drive sober make plans in advance. But how do these people know if they've had too much with, you know, alcohol we've heard even two glasses of wine, especially for a for a woman is too much to drink and drive. How do you know if you've had too much with with cannabis? Everybody reacts different to cannabis and people do react differently to alcohol as well. We recommend that people make other arrangements. If they're using at all there's not a strict guideline, but we do know that people are unaware the risks of driving when they've used. So my own practice is to not drive if I have had a drink, and I would recommend the same of others. It's illegal to drive impaired. And that is true of alcohol or drugs at any level impairment is impairment is impairment nitsa deputy administrator Heidi king. Thank you so much. Thank you. Stay safe six fifteen Mike Reiss and sports late night for you. But the nuggets getting the win. I always say if you're gonna stay up late you might as well get the victory. Yeah.
