You're listening to SportsCenter all night on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app I'm Jim basketball. This weekend's cause football schedule dented by covert 19, but there are a host of intriguing games today. Her street reached Davis on SportsCenter on the match up to look out for you know, we always kid about these weeks when it looks like, Oh, it's you know, status quo. Everybody wins and moves on. These are the weeks where a lot of times the favorite show up, and they just kind of go through the motions and somebody ends up getting upset. Don't be shocked to see two or three upsets. I think a team that needs to be careful is Florida. The Gators are coming off an emotional win. Florida is thinking about, you know. Hey, we're gonna be in the mix here. We're trying to get to Atlanta. Be careful against Arkansas. You have fully paid Frank's coming back. I know Sam Pittman. Has covert as the head coach. He will not be coaching Berry. Autumn takes over, but our console manages the team that's believing and dangerous and Florida's going to need to forget about that Great win against George and get ready to play physical team against Arkansas Berry. Autumn, has a win as a head coach in the swamp when he was the head coach at Missouri Love to pull that upset again. All right. Let's bring in Heather Dennis to expand that college football conversation. And Heather. It's not the elephant in the room. Rather, the herd of elephants we know about the non bubble leagues like Major League baseball that finishing the NFL is powering through because Barbossa different dynamic regarding the covert impact. Six ranked teams postponed or canceled, including top ranked Alabama against L S U the Ivy League pulled the plug on winter sports Covitz numbers. Jumping across the country. But what sense do you have of how the coronavirus ultimately impacts this sport regarding getting the season finished? A champion crowned, I think as he seeks Missioner Gregg. Thank you summed it up the best this week when he said that he was shaken, not deterred, and that phrase has been repeated. Throughout this week, because I think it exemplifies the general feeling throughout the sports decision makers honestly from coast to coast, and while there has been some talk and acknowledgement This week that the conference commissioners are at least discussing the potential of pushing the college football playoff back if they need to. The general consensus is that everyone wants to reschedule these games. Play them and stick with the timeline and crowned champion on January 11th in Miami Gardens, Florida as plants. I don't know that they even know the answer to that. I mean, when you have players who cannot return any sooner than 21 days because of this return to play progression. That's the question. "How many wins against ranked opponents within your conference is going to matter. So if their only loss is a close loss to Clemson, and yeah, they might be considered based on what everybody else does There. Are they also going against a second CT? Maybe Florida. You have Alabama win in Florida. Hang around is the second team Then you start to compare those resumes. So then you do ask the question. Well, how deep is the SEC compared to the A. C C ended? Did Florida play more ranked opponents or tougher competition? Then Miami did down the stretch, and that's kind of what I wrote about today for ESPN dot com is strength of schedule is looking a lot more like strength of conference this year. Without those eight CCS see non conference matchups and things to help us determine Which teams are better know we'd never even had to determine that. We just knew the SEC grains of college football. Peter Burns hero Woods, Katie George in the voice of reason, Heather Dennis joining us in the shell pins or performance line. I joke around about that. But I started this segment, saying that the big 12 we need to start looking at this versus the brand's versus the actual football, No college football playoff titles or no playoff are no titles in 15 years. They're what? Oh, and five in the college football playoff Heather. I mean, how big of a blow was this to the conference yesterday, with both Oklahoma and Texas losing It was devastating. I mean, you know you can and and we do. I have to remind people look, it's September and we're in a pandemic, and nobody knows how many games people are going to play and all that. Everyone knows that right? But taxes in Oklahoma don't look good. They don't look like top four teams. Oklahoma has just played so poorly, particularly in the second half each of the past two weeks, and Texas has issues of its oh, losing at home to TCU and then being fortunate to win last week against Texas Tech. So, you know, can we? Can we look at Oklahoma State, which is the last remaining unbeaten team in that league is a potential playoff contender. Well, maybe, but I'd like to see Oklahoma State win at Oklahoma on November 21st can they went at TCU on December 5th? You know, If you look at ESPN, FBI, Oklahoma State has less than a 50% chance to win four of its left. The rest is schedules. So you know that's kind of a believe it want to see it type thing, but When you're talking about power five conferences, including the Big 10 impact 12 haven't played yet. I would have to say the big 12 is in the worst position of any of them right now. Heather, who's been the biggest surprise thus far for you. Oh, boy. That's a good question. Maybe Miami. Um, you know, I had higher expectations for Florida this year, and I think those air coming to fruition, But you know, you mentioned the Kanes and I think that's interesting. Can they make the sea Look deeper and in North Carolina, I was impressive. They got that done yesterday because they hadn't place and I think it's going to be interesting to see Notre Dame as well. In terms of, you know the layoff and what that does to teams. But I think Miami is an interesting one. Yeah, especially with right, Lastly and the the the improvement they made from week one toe Week two and three, much like Todd Monken did for the Georgia Bulldogs from week. One too weak to it is, it's great to see because again as much as I joke around the A C. C. It's nice to see Clemson have somebody that's going to push them. And perhaps that's the case with not only Miami but the Notre Dame joining the conference, Heather Dennis, we have to run. We appreciate the time and thank you for trying. Tio put some sense into me this morning. Thank you guys. Have a great heather. Heather. Damage is being college football. Insider backhanded. Um, yeah, I don't know so much about that, too. "Well, the A C C proven not to be a bunch of huckleberries because their board of directors got today got together on Wednesday. They're gonna have an 11 game football season beginning the weekend of September 12 and Notre Dame is going to be a part of that. Playing a full league schedule. But on Ly if public health guidance allows all a cc schools and Notre Dame will play 10 conference games, plus one not conference game of their choosing, And guess what. Fighting eyes will be held over the championship game, and there will not be any divisions for this season on Lee. Heather Dennis, ESPN Council football reporter When she was on SportsCenter. She told how this decision by the A C C will affect the other power five conferences. Well, let's start with the SEC and right before we got on the show here. I got a statement from Greg. Thank you, the SEC commissioner, he said. He's not about to speculate on anything that might be floating out there, he said. We continue our discussions focused on the return of fall sports, including football. We will announce any decisions at the appropriate time. That's a statement from SEC commissioner Greg Sang Ki. I can tell you that the SEC presidents have a regularly scheduled previously scheduled I should say video conference tomorrow. So everybody's watching that Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby told me that the Big 12 presidents are going to be meeting on Monday and they will be presented four or five different scheduling models, he said. We're going to arm them with all the information they need to make a decision if that's what they want. Two

"Radio Sports Kevin Winter will be have a college football season. We know that some of the lower level conferences have already decided to postpone their college football season until at least January 2021 22 21 he'd drive to say at the earliest. What happens for the Power Five Conference and the big time conferences, conference teams? If you will, those that don't even have a conference like Notre Dame. They're athletic director Jack for telling ESPN Heather Dennis today that it would like to see college football return but at least had a delayed start. He added. I don't anticipate a 12 game scheduled like to start a little later. He thinks that the probable number is somewhere between 8 to 10 games. It should be noted that Notre Dame has lost three opponents already on its 2020 scheduled for the fall. That would be us. See Stanford of Wisconsin to schools from the pack and a Pac 12 rather and one from the big tent. That's because both of those conferences have announced they're going to a conference only schedule. There's football in the fall the NFL Players Association meeting today after the league offered to eliminate the entire 2023 season. This comes one day after the union in the league on Protocols of Testing for Covert 19 NFLPA today said 59 players have known to have tested positive for the virus that dropped 72 they reported. Back on July 10th the NBA's gonna restarted season a week from Thursday doubleheader will have the second game on ESPN, Radio, Lakers and Clippers today, the league delivered on its promise that showed the new courts in the bubble in Orlando. I appreciate you joining us on Freddy and Fitz Simmons presented by Progressive insurance. On ESPN Radio. The ESPN APP inserts extra channel 80. So yesterday we found about the swag, meaning the Southwestern Athletic Conference in Hbcu Conference a terrific conference in F. C S. They cancel fall sports, including football, but they develop the planet. They put out there for public knowledge that they're going to have a spring football. See if everything is right. When it comes to cope in 19 they're gonna have each team play six games in their conference, plus one chance to play an extra game. If so, be it. The man in charge of that is Dr Charles McClellan, who's the commissioner's whack and he joins him. Freddy Fitzsimmons. Thanks to show pencil performance line, doctor. We know this could not have been easy for you to decide this. It probably wasn't easy, of course to decide that not have fall sports. But when did this plan develop in terms of this? What we want to do not having football in the fall, but we want to have football in the spring. But we actually had plans that date back to early summer Late spree where we talked about Drop dead date within our calendar, you know for us to be able to play fall sports, so that knowing that time the pandemic was starting to Canada Grant down. We looked at the calendar and it was not being able to place that's put plans out there. Change. Can that and we modeled out. Naturally, we'd warned that plane to get all the way to the 17th of October. This is our job. Not for us to be able to play football in the fall. If we can't start my October 17 then we'll have to move it to the spring, and we got holster to the timeframe and at least the pandemic numbers going up. We're in Southeastern racial tensions are probably Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama. The number. You have just skyrocketed and explode. So we were able to count bathrooms. From that. I've told 17 day and a new count backwards to the time that it takes. Student athletes in can't get him trying already admitted that they would have had to been physically cancer somewhere around since the third week when we got together on yesterday, we realized that was impossible task for us. So we actually acted on springs and that's ultimately what we were able to go on. How hard doctor was this decision to make for you? Uh, it's catastrophic and let me tell you only become not only marks commissioner, but I have to participate in the sport of basketball with a question of confidence. So when we had the council Basketball turning last. You know, they literally quiet because not only did they get The pride of opportunity to complete what their dream was. And I was able to determine played by eldest son, Uh, his best friend left that day, so they went from the most exhilarating time in their lives, too. Not that it ever so you can't possibly of the police student soon after four months later, you know, we had him in our patient dies it Corona virus, So I really understand how deeply Those decision impacts student Athens You've been training your entire life to get to this point, and yet again, we're taking opportunities away from But that was like the end of the tunnel for us to say. Hey, look. We realize that we're not going to be able to play it all We do have a plan and a passport in order for us to play in spring, So we pass it around. The coaches and athletic directors really took the bull by one. But that scares you looked at the games. We had grants among all that's ultimately the direction that we're gonna go..

"We will be back so great to have all of you here and it's been a busy day Our next guest saw quite early this morning, talking about the ever changing world of the college football and Heather. Joins US heather. Thanks very much It's been one of those. Days when? Everyone is trying to pick up the pieces and figure in try to figure out what what it all means we we We ask you at the mid point of of the afternoon What's going on today? News desk about the big ten moving to a approving rather today, a conference only schedule. Really tell us about. This news. We're going to pause why you send. Hit the send button. Hang on, hang on, hang on a second, so multiple sources have said that the big ten is in favor. Of Fall sports playing a conference only schedule That's the news and I'm pretty sure that it'll come out later today, if not tomorrow, but I think it's going to gain traction really quickly. There was a coach's meeting. This morning. where the coaches gave input and the decision was approved by. Big Ten athletic directors and presidents I'm told it wasn't necessarily a vote. It was more a decision and I think the reasoning behind it. Paul is a greater confidence in the League's ability to trust its test is players rather as opposed to not knowing what team x is doing in terms of krona virus protocol and for testing before they get on a plane. Plane come to play team Y. in the big ten, plus it also allows them flexibility obviously, as far as pushing. The season back one of the questions that is still hanging out. There I told is whether or not they can front load to schedule with division opponents so that if the season is interrupted, they would at least have those division games played. Heather Dennis joining us with some breaking news and Heather as you well know you deal with this stuff all the time. you're talking about a lot of big games. Ohio state was to Oregon second week of the season. Michigan was Washington Notre Dame, Wisconsin. I mean they're. They're pretty big games all over the board I mean this is not a shock and I noticed some people. This sounds like wow. This is the end of the world, but I mean the bigger question remains the ultimate college football season. Does it not? Yes absolutely I mean. You know look. Nobody knows if they're going to play college, football or not and I talked to Notre. Dame Athletic Director Jacks Warwick today as well and he said that he thinks it's less likely. There's a non time star. Meanwhile, he's gotTa still prepare to play Navy right, so they're going through. All these protocol plans to actually get the Irish plane. Fly Him out to the state of Maryland, get into a hotel and go play football so They're planning to play these games and they obviously want to and intend to, but there's also a very very realistic acknowledgement. Does this might not happen at all? But if it does, they've got to have their plans in place and I. think that's what you're seeing from the big ten. Yeah, and you know certainly a new commissioner. There well respected. Kevin Warren I'm curious what you're hearing in relation to. Everyone else. there are four other power, five conferences and You would think or or or should we think they're going to go the same way? Well yes, so I think it's based on what I'm hearing I would think that the ACC would be amenable to doing this as well and if the PAC twelve does do this then I mean this is this. Is Domino effect right? Forget what the Ivy League did. This is domino effect, because if the PAC twelve does it. Notre! Dame needs to replace three games on the schedule. Stanford USC and now Wisconsin there was supposed to play them at Lambeau. So if it does go to conference only then I. Think what you see. Happen is Notre. Dame goes over. The ACC, just for the season, because they're already playing six games against them anyway and helps fill those other conference game those other league games excuse me. I can't talk those other games for Notre. Dame schedule that that they would play. They would be games and then in the SEC. That's a whole different monster. I think Greg, Sankey as powerful as he is. He's under tremendous pressure within his State. politically football. Wise you name it from athletic directors, boosters presidents to as many football games as possible. But that being said if everybody else is doing it. He's not going to have much of a choice because the pack twelve does that USC. Just can't play Alabama. No and and I mean we. We have competing universities going on I. DON'T WANNA. Call them parallel yet but you know. Heather really since last night. The conversation has intensified on the likelihood of the season and today. Nobody knows I, mean we we. We asked the questions every day, but we we also acknowledged. Nobody knows but take us through with this announcement. I'm sure every commissioner right now is huddled This story had been rumored for couple of hours I. Mean Certainly you were hearing it and everyone. is not surprised, but you know once they all start. Start making pronouncements. The the big question remains what what what? What else is on the agenda over these next few weeks? And what are the what are the five power five commissioners mark and he's watching it to what are they all watching in looking for right now? What are the leading indicators leading indicators of whether we're going to have a college football season or not well? I think the first crow itself right? You look at all the hot spots..

"And all of the Avengers and all the Disney movies and gummy bears I don't know why I am so hot on gummy bears other than that there's not really a waiters energy so is because I really do also the college football action tonight don't forget if you missed our interview today with heather Dennis go check the entire interview on demand in the Golan can we go podcast party by Capital One why settle for average with Capital One you can open an account with the savings rate five times the national average welcome to banking reimagined what's in your wallet so seriously the big court where is Minnesota gonna end up tonight that that's what good because the top four we seem to all agree Ellis you Ohio state claims in Alabama and again a lot of it doesn't matter there as much because a lot of it is still going to play out Alabama could be number four but get dropped out of the same the big cat you gotta believe the big twelve and the pac twelve are really hoping at the end of the same at all Ellis you really takes care Georgia in the SEC championship right right to not have any debate there to let George I'd be in this thing just Ellis you take care of business there so there's room for somebody else exactly because of Georgia were to win that Alabama chances are done they're done and also what either the pac twelve recall is going to be done to write because you're gonna get to probably from the SEC you're gonna have claims and there's only one more spot to more conferences exactly right you're more more likely look at like as we play this out there are a lot of sorry that they got the big ten you could have yeah you could put Ohio state if they went out is going to die so both the big twelve and the pac twelve could be left out of the saying if you go to I. C. season harborside I knew that you could also get too big tenses I mean there is a about I don't then I don't see as a as a big scenario I'm with you I I don't think it does happen but their lease to quality football teams to allow I I did two things I think we heard from the committee that will matter tonight in week one to me the way I described the the initial playoff rankings were safe and what I mean by that is they picked for teams to be the top four that they knew would play itself out so it is fine so I expect him to maintain that sort of safe moment they also devalue the big twelve and really value the fact well so if I take both of those things safe big tall back twelve what I expect is for them to keep but as we all expected the one two three four that we expect and then George and five and you've got six and seven for the pact of pac twelve and now when you talk or did you taught I think they'll put Minnesota in it eight because the value that will be ahead of Oklahoma so basically drop Penn state out of there are those of the eight teams and you have right you think they'll only be ahead of one of those a team that's basically what we're going here LSU Ohio state Alabama climbs in Georgia Oregon Utah Oklahoma is Minnesota you're saying is only ahead of Oklahoma correct and I think that's because they're gonna value the pac twelve still they're gonna give the pack for the chance to work itself out and keep those two teams bunched together nothing changed in that perception and they already don't value the big twelve so that that's my mindset on which is interesting because I look at Utah's schedule and obviously strength of schedule Frank the resume wise when you look at Utah strike the resume their it twelve and you've got Minnesota at four right that that to me is where this starts to get interesting now I don't know where that strength of schedule wise and obviously there's the depth of it but Minnesota after last week as a better women anything on you to our organs get right with the exactly right I don't think they're gonna put him above organ I wouldn't be shocked and I wouldn't disagree much of right now they put them above you talk Utah and Oregon are going to some extent control their own destiny obviously the SEC situation is kind of like the the panic switch moment for them but Utah and Oregon have a good win left on their schedule potentially with each other should they do what we all believe in right that's not till the end of the season right so until then I mean that is until until then you look at Minnesota they've got a right now ranked I won right Wisconsin right Utah has on right everybody UCLA Arizona and Colorado so they're very not impressing anybody with that it's all getting to the end of the pac twelve champ two K. so you so if that were to happen that means you think you Minnesota could be seven they could jump ten spots and as heather drainage pointed out what she was on with us earlier no team has ever jumped more than six spots into the top ten in the history of the college football playoff thus far and let me be clear to I don't think this is the end of the road from Minnesota no one can do is go on to right right of course but when we look moving forward it's easy to dismiss Minnesota and I would say a lot of people dismiss them against Penn state almost everybody did so if you believe last week the Penn state can play Ford and say Hey we control our own destiny I will apply that same logic to Minnesota they they thump Penn state they left I shouldn't say from when they were growing desi Walgreens or wins out there in no matter what right but the follow up to that yes but the follow up to that statement for most of us is a live answer that's not gonna happen right so I'm saying I'm saying that Minnesota deserve some benefit of the doubt if they beat Penn state Penn state is better than Iowa they are better than Wisconsin so there's no reason for me to think that they can't beat those teams as well so I guess I question why they would have to beat Ohio state in the big ten championship and that's the diff cried long how about if they got to that that Ohio state championship game and lost on a last second field goal Danny shot for Minnesota that yeah I think so yes I figured that I guess depending on the Georgia game say that it depends on the SEC like playing out the scenarios have spawned what it'll leave is the more than likely option is Clinton's gonna win out and get in Ohio state is going to win out and get in and we're gonna have to wait to see what happens with the SEC before we decide anything else I agree with all of that and I think Minnesota unfortunately is going to take on and I have a stake team that's great in the big ten championship game and that's gonna be the measure Wednesday I go to my go huge show coach Matt rule Marcus spears Greg McElroy's much more it is a stacked.

You know, we cannot let Georgia establish the run the play acting firm date from starts filling himself we shut down that run. Jake got a forest to pass. It's just apples oranges. What do you think? So Heather, we are closing in on the Ponente college football playoff rankings. Let's go over where you think they will land later tonight. Well, I think they stick with the same top three Alabama. Clemson Notre Dame. I think Georgia moves into the number four spot at the expense of Michigan. And then I think they go with Oklahoma at five and Ohio State at six hall. Tell you why. Because Ohio State has been looking up at Oklahoma in every single one of their ranking so far, and I realized that Ohio State improved. It's playoff position tremendously with that win against Michigan. But the selection committee looks at all of it not just that one part. And it's not so easy to say they beat the number four team in the country. They did put on offensive clinic against the number one defense. Ohio State has struggled to beat Nebraska. They were lucky to be Maryland. They were fortunate that quarterback didn't make this row on the two point conversion they won ugly against Michigan state. I don't think that one win negates. A month or so worth of struggles, including twenty nine point loss of Purdue. And it's not as if Oklahoma didn't get a great win on the road in Morgantown as well. Let's let's pause right there because there's a lot of chew on..

"We'll be thinking of you often the place stay in touch. Thanks so much best all of you. Thank you so much you too. Yeah. And I realized this sometimes you do this at the end of the year, but this has been a tough year. And I'm not gonna go down the list of of names of people that we've been close to in laws for just seems like it's been too too often on this program, especially. Lately Milly is up next in raw Millie. I heard about ED's death. And I'm so sorry to hear about it. He was kind of a cool character. But he said that he was getting did right thought he could live to be one hundred. Yeah. That's it is too bad Milly, but. You know, there's there's meaning in everything in a no, no, you're a very religious person. But I think what happens. Sometimes I know it happens for me that start thinking about instead of what's gone wrong. Or what you don't have. It's what you do have in the blessings that you've been given. And it is a is a an awakening or reawakening time for for many of us when you start thinking about those who who have passed on. Yeah. And another thing I was really happy getting on a lighter the daily I was happy to hear that the Bill went the way I wanted to and the did you guys have of wonderful thanksgiving. We did it was it was it was fantastic. Thanks so much for calling. We're up against the break. Here Heather Dench will join us to preview. Tonight's next to the last college football playoff rankings. She'll be with us momentarily. You're listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We welcome all of you back. So glad you're with us. And let's let's talk to Heather Dennis right now, she is the radius brought to you by Holiday Inn express. So Heather, we are closing in on the panel to college football playoff rankings. Let's go over where you think they will land later tonight. Well, I think they stick with the same top three Alabama. Clemson Notre Dame. I think Georgia moves into the number four spot at the expense of Michigan. And then I think they go with Oklahoma at five I don't Hieaux state at six Paul tell you why it's because state has been looking up at Oklahoma in every single one of their ranking so far, and I realized that Ohio State improved. It's playoff position tremendously with that win against Michigan. But the selection committee looks at all of it not just that one part. And it's not so easy to say they beat the number four team in the country. They didn't put on -fensive clinic against the number one defense. Ohio State has struggled to beat Nebraska. They were lucky to beat Maryland. They were fortunate that quarterback didn't make this row on the two point conversion they won ugly against Michigan state. I don't think that one win negates. A month or self worth of struggles, including twenty nine point loss at Purdue. And and it's not as if Oklahoma didn't get a great win on the road in Morgantown as well. Let's let's pause right there because there's a lot of chew on..

"Thirty nine win over Michigan. This is college game day on ESPN radio the ESPN app built by the Home Depot presented by progressive insurance. Saugus appear via the shell Pennzoil performance line. Unless they're in studio Heather Dennis joins us in studio. Given the straight talk brought to you by straight talk wireless. Best phones, best networks, no contracts. So we just assumed just go Chok Alabama went out. Clemson went out. Notre Dame went out. Michigan went out your in easy, peasy and your layup. Now got a little bit of a of an upset the Ohio states in the rare underdog role pull off the emphatic exclamation point against Michigan. So how does the committee viewing that wind today? It's a piece of the puzzle. Which is why everybody needs to just hold on a minute before they put a house stayed in the top four. Let's get crazy. They barest Michigan. It was a win that they needed at the perfect time of the season to impress the selection committee. But when you line up, Ohio State and Oklahoma on paper, they are. So unbelievably similar in what they've accomplished to this point Oklahoma went into West Virginia got a very important win as well. And Oklahoma has been ranked ahead of Ohio State all along one of the things I'm most interested to see on Tuesday is who has the edge on Tuesday, Oklahoma or Ohio State not a given as. To what that's not to say. Whoever is is going to be in the top four, whatever. But it's certainly an indication into what they're thinking. How much does playing well down the stretch count for the committee as opposed to top to bottom entire body of work? All homogenized. Well, it certainly matters. Because in Ohio states case, they have not played well the past couple of weeks in the selection committee has noticed that. So for them to say, hey, we're better than we looked against Maryland. Last week means something in that room. Number nineteen north western has a twenty one to six lead at the half on Illinois that game becomes very important for an Ohio State team that certainly does not want to go in facing what could be an unranked northwestern team if they were to lose to Illinois. So so far so good if you're a Buckeye fan Auburn quickly trick play for the Tigers gets a touchdown. We got a three point game and Tuscaloosa bread. Yeah. We do. Auburn ended up getting the ball on a blocked. Punt Alabama had come up a yard short on third down in Alabama has really struggled in its punning game. In addition to its field goal game all season long. They got the punt blocked. Auburn took over with a short field. I play made a pass back to a receiver who then turned and threw a pass downfield for the touchdown. Auburn seventeen fourteen is we get late here in the first half. We're used to seeing Alabama up by pretty large margins at the half all season long last week tied at ten at the half against the citadel now up only three is we get late in the in the second half second quarter against Auburn. I it's it's it's looking like a different Alabama team as they started to play good defenses. They have not nearly been as they're not been nearly as dominant and they're not getting the big plays. We're used to seeing Alabama with all the explosive plays offensively. And they're no longer coming. Receivers are being covered, and Alabama's I don't know. If struggling is the right word. Offensively. But it's it's not coming easy to them as it had been maybe a cliche phrase can be used peaking tour this season or something like that. Or just now teams until later, and and now maybe hitting cruise control and trying to get through these last couple of games here before you get to the SEC championship. They've got Georgia coming up next week. Trevor just a quick note iron bowl. Offers defensive line is is pressuring in the pocket there causing trouble right now bama's off it's of line is a protecting their quarterback as well. As a lot of people expected. They would heatherton is joining us here in studio college football playoff reporter. We're going to hear from urban Meyer of from his post game news conference after the win. Over state will hear that coming up in a few moments here on ESPN radio. The interesting things going to be you mentioned Oklahoma and a one loss Oklahoma versus the one loss. Ohio state. Trevor brought up the point. It's it's a very good one. Is that the committee already says Oklahoma's number six, so it's not like anything. They saw against West Virginia was this. Oh my goodness. I can't believe how bad is Oklahoma defenses. They're already at six so they didn't really do anything to discredit themselves. They just confirmed probably what the committee already believed. So if you have Oklahoma there at six considering their entire body work. They've been pretty consistent all year. Great on offense. Terrible on defense there at six it'd be hard to see Ohio. State jumping Oklahoma. Would you agree based on the one game over Michigan? I don't think it would be hard to see it. And the reason I say that is because they have a better win. They have the best win. But they also have the worst loss. Can't forget that they they lost a do. Right. The reason that I say it's not it wouldn't be hard to believe is because the committee as you hear every week quote starts with a clean slate and by beating Michigan Ohio state changed his resume, especially in the way that they won that game. And by doing that both of those teams now have two wins over ranked opponents they now have three wins against teams power five teams with records over five hundred. They're so similar Oklahoma has a number one offense. I think is is like number six right now the biggest difference is oh Oklahoma's defense is like ninety and Ohio states middling somewhere around fifty s so they're very comparible. Would you agree though that if Oklahoma is above Ohio State on Tuesday? That would lead a reasonable person to assume that have Oklahoma wins the big twelve championship, regardless truly of how it looks because they've won this way all year if they beat Texas, which is a better team than north western. So a better win than Ohio State will have that Oklahoma would get in over Ohio State. If there if Oklahoma's above Ohio State this Tuesday with that be a reasonable assumption to make it would be a reasonable assumption. But you're also talking about thirteen people, and I think well, don't forget back that Texas can win this thing. They did it already. And then you're learning at a three loss big, twelve chant. But yes, I mean, it would be reasonable to assume that but I wouldn't assume it because what happens if they look sloppy in that game. Even though they beat them. What happens if they give up another six hundred yards while Ohio State holds north western to three points and beats them. I don't know thirty five to three then what do you do? Heather integrate, if if if Alabama beats Georgia next week, then we would assume,.

"So right now, I'm appoint this at the rail we go into New Orleans this week, so McVeigh. You busy engines we work. You're busy Todd Gurley. You're a busy. So I'm gonna give the pre-game speeds we going to New Orleans, it's rowdy. They will be. And it's the no so people go be drawn. No matter how early the game. Is we go in there? We will get the ball Todd Gurley is smashed football. We coming down. Yeah. Jewelries? Oh, look at me. I'm the leader in passing yards, Terry golf. It's your time. We let edgy Whitworth get off the bus flirts, you know, one Louisiana's like Egil get out there, which are big sold this with the captain pets. Go do. What's it got to do this? This less attack paid we will stop the deep ball. Hey, angry area. I'm calling angry era. Do you know what I'm talking about the Aaron Donald golden that these people going now here at next week? We be number one again. Oh, are you? In that game so badly. So close if Aaron gets that they're going to win that game. And this would have been the best day. I cannot argue paper and right now the paper Tigers number one. That's the college football rankings the college. Alabama's clear number one. Clemson at number two. The cast is just starting. Notre Dame got the next best resume Michigan and LSU are getting. The first rankings reveal tonight seven PM on ESPN. That's right tonight. We finally get to see what this year's college football playoff committee cares about our college football playoff reporter for ESPN Heather Dennis here to get a set for the first rankings reveal and first of all Heather just to give everyone a little picture of exactly where you are. And what goes on in case? They don't know you're right outside the room where the committee meets and has been meeting anything. You can tell us about what you heard from them any rumblings. And he listening in through the door to try to get some sneak peek of what they may do. Not yet because we're we're an hour earlier here. And so the only thing I've seen so far CFP executive director Bill Hancock. I think he was on his way to the gym in the hallway. I if there was any skew he said, we're going to announce a ranking tonight. I said I think you've done this before I'm actually I'm going to go up there above me. I'm going to go I'm gonna go sneak in there after we're done this hit to see some of the new committee members who are in there. I love it. What do you think this committee will do with their top for Heather? I think that they start with Alabama no brainer. Clemson to me is number two because of how dominant they looked in each of the past two weeks against Atlantic Division of Ponant. And then I think it's gets a little tricky at number three. I think they put LSU in there ahead of undefeated Notre Dame because when you look at LSU clearly they have established themselves as the best one loss team four wins against power five opponents with winning records to me, they could even make the case to jump ahead of. Clemson. I think that will be a debate. I think in fall at three right ahead of undefeated Notre Dame. Okay. So outside of those top four teams, and look this is just one snapshot of the committee's rankings. It will rank all the way up until the college football playoff is played. But what other teams should we be keeping our eye on to see where they fall in these first rankings? Oklahoma is one that I'm very curious about today because I think Texas losing last week hurt the entire big twelve and when you look at the Sooners resume right now, they don't have much to brag about their best win. You would have to say, I guess it's either at Iowa State, maybe against K state. I don't know they've got no margin for error. They need to beat West Virginia in Morgantown on that Friday night and finish as a one loss..

"ESPN one thousand whichever team loses. Yes. Because one of them will have to losses. The winners obviously in the driver's seat for the SEC east if it's Georgia. The Georgia Kentucky game becomes that much bigger notch just in the SEC race. But also in the playoff discussion as well. But yes, this is one of those make or break games Heather Dennis. She's got to be filed the college football playoff selection committee when they start their unveil the rankings Tuesday night on ESPN seven PM eastern. You brought up Kentucky as it stands right now. Five of the top twelve teams in the writers poll are teams from the SEC Kentucky's ranked twelfth although the underdogs that big underdogs today at Missouri. We know one of them's gonna lose. How do you think this shakes out for the SEC particularly the teams in the SEC east? Well, first of all let's remember in twenty fourteen there were three SEC west teams in the selection committee's top four. I mean, Mississippi ole miss Mississippi State and Auburn, correct. That's correct. Yeah. So you gotta remember that it's about the four best teams. Now, we would assume that Notre Dame continues to win against Navient, San. N'diaye go Alabama. Like, you mentioned is off. So they should be fine. Clemson, obviously should be in there. So I think at the end of the day the leader from the SEC is going to be in there. And then what happens between LSU and Bama the next step in determining we are focusing a lot on the why not they create a lot of the interest. There a great talking point whether you like them or not there's also the talking point that came up last year UCF undefeated, they still are undefeated Heather, but they're not making headway amongst the writers. We're may they go when it comes to the committee on Tuesday nights. I think possibly it could be around the same somewhere around ten, but look I talked to rob Mons. Athletic director at Oregon, and he's the new selection committee chair this year and without talking specifically about UCF by any means. He's simply reminded people. We don't care what happened in. Pass. Right. So forget what. Whatever the streak is right now throw it out the window and look at UCF schedule. And when you look at the likes of wins against Yukon, South Carolina's state, Florida Atlantic pit SMU Memphis, East Carolina. I mean, anybody who's listening to this raise your hand where you're impressed on that stretch. Heather's hand in my down for the record. Just so everyone knows I mean, Memphis, I watched that game closely. So and coming down the stretch, there's nothing else there in my mind based on what I know from talking to the selection committee, people that would change the way they looked at it from last year. Now, they're six new people on the selection committee. Maybe some of those people care more about an undefeated record. But they'll Hancock CFP executive director. We'll tell you not undefeated records are created equal which is why maybe in the top floor. You might see LSU ranked ahead of Notre Dame. Or clemson. Speaking of Notre Dame, the Irish, and I've touched that at many times their schedule. It's not that week when it comes to UCF, a wasn't a strongest many believe Irish went out there. And if they went out, but I don't think a one loss Notre Dame gets that benefit of being Notre Dame because what you mentioned, but that's another thing to pay attention to in Tuesday night's rankings where Stanford ranks where are these other second tier opponents of? Contenders ranked like Miami, for example. That impacts LSU's resume. So that's one thing to watch is just how strong is Notre Dame's resume in the eyes of the committee is ESPN college football playoff. Reporter Heather dinner's going to be joining us many many times from here on out for the remainder of the season. The first out of the college football playoff rankings. Come your way Tuesday night, beginning at seven pm eastern time. It looks as. Yep. Waste concert is going to be out of those.

"Paul for she. It you good to talk to you about portray? No. I don't know if I heard a lot of confidence or not, but yeah, you know, I mean, the one thing about between, oh, is there was a while where they were not underdogs at all. They were one of the teams on the cusp of the playoff and in that conversation consistently, certainly in two thousand sixteen right in. So I think he's a little scary. Sometimes. I'm not saying that, you know they're going to win this game or who knows there is talent on this team and there's talent on the coaching staff too. So I think that's why there's no part of Alabama that's trying to overlook this game and think, oh, well, this is just a game where we're going to tinker around with quarterback spot and try out a few new guys in being at Alabama's practice. And in also hearing on the other side, what Louisville's preparing for this is a what both sides are considering a heavyweight power fight, and they're going to produce it that way. And I will say this about Bobby tree. No, he does not come off as maybe the warmest. Guy, but I thought his career for a long time. I mean, he is a really good football coach, really spite of everything else. And when he was at Arkansas, that program was on fire and they're trying to get back to that and still, I mean, that was quite some time ago. So yeah, I excited about it. I think there's something to be said for the fact that nobody really is really electric seeing this game two years ago. Oh, my key magin Lamar, Jack. Now, here's the thing. Join passes is a talented dual threat quarterback. He's not Lamar Jackson. It not many are still. Team dismantled? Yes. Against the break. We have more to come with Lara and others, including Heather Dennis. She will join us shortly. Now forget Danny Sheridan tomorrow. He will be with us to give his predictions of the upcoming college football seasons to listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast, welcome back to the program, and we're glad you're here. And we were talking during the break about the most important games of the year in college football, and we're delighted to welcome the person who makes the schedule and then determines which games are most important, Heather shorting guess Heather good afternoon, and thanks for the time. So let's talk about some of those games. I saw a lot of a lot of the same schools on that list. It is. It really boils down to Hieaux state and Auburn, and what's amazing about it is that coach urban Meyer is going to be back on the field for a high states. Most important games of the season. When you look at Michigan, Penn State, Michigan state, those are all games that are going to help determine who's in the top four this year. And then when you look at Auburn, I spoke to Gus malzahn recently and he says, look, this is almost like it was last year except instead of Clemson, it's Washington and that's a catch twenty two for them. It's great because if they win those games, they've got a great chance of being in shoot. They lost two of them last year and still had a great chance of being in. But when you look at November for Auburn at Georgia at Alabama, that can also be the dagger that knocks them right back out. Yeah, I think you brought a really great points here, Heather, with thinking about the playoff going through host. Date in Auburn, and it brings me to the question and this is something that we talk about all year long with the college football, playoff and the committee, but what will they value more? Do they really value strength schedule? Because both of these teams in in Auburn and Ohio State are going to have incredibly strong schedules, whether they win all these games are not. Could we see this year be the year that we have a couple of loss team in there? Is that something that you're seeing with the way that maybe the committee will look at strength of schedule even over the wins and losses. Well, I realized that there's some confusion out there and you know, you can look back to Washington schedule a couple of years ago, and even Wisconsin last year, their strength of schedule..

"Heather Dennis join will came Thursday here on ESPN. Radio I don't know if he counted it up Heather, but if you had to sort of make a guesstimate how many times do you think Lies were uttered last night at, that press conference for urban Meyer My goodness The one that I find the most difficult to believe when he stood there and said that he did not see the text messages from. His, wife Shelly I have been married for over thirteen years and I can promise you that anything like that ever showed up on my cell phone involving one of my, husband's employees relatives or whatever it is on my. Cellphone period the first person I'm walking over to him with. A w what are you comfortable saying today that urban Meyer was guilty of Question I think he was guilty of exactly what I just, said of. Not reporting the investigation, of domestic violence he was guilty of allowing one member of his staff to continually get away with fireable offenses he was guilty of lying, to the media starting. On media day and then again I believe what he said with a text messages and the investigation the people said that they also believe that urban, and, Shelly talked about those text messages that his wife had so like if you're. In Ohio State fan out there and you are still supporting urban Meyer that's fine but, think about this think about the links that he. Went to protect one person on his staff and put that. One person over the greater good of quote your beloved Buckeye nation Is that who you want leading your program no you know what's fascinating that Heather I thought, the same thing obviously? A big contingent of the people? Writing, for today are Ohio State fans and I got to thinking his allegiance wasn't to you. The Ohio State fan his allegiance wasn't to the program his allegiance was to Zach Smith and I guess. By proxy Earle Bruce allegiance was to put the entire program and your the thing that you. Root for presumably before urban Meyer and long after been to put. That in jeopardy, for guy that ran up a strip club Bill with a bunch of high school coaches that I found shocking right and I feel like that that's that's lost a lot of. This discussion and the other thing too is when you when you look at the big picture, and you. Step back and you. Look at it what does this mean what does it say about state well clearly says that they care more about football and winning than, addressing the big picture And one of the parts of that that report I. Think that really should. Have gotten more publicity than it. Has is informing the football staff, in preparation for big ten media, days right before they can media days according to this report urban cinemas message to his coaches saying the most important thing is team and players at this time Meyer further directed quote zero conversation about Zack path issues we need to help him as he moves forward team. And? Players exclamation point that shows a, very clear in my mind focus of. What urban Meyer's priorities are SPN's Heather dinner on the will Cain show you can read more from Heather on the Ohio State and, urban Meyer news conference? On ESPN dot com many believe? The, school did not do enough Meyer suspension being more of a slap on the wrist A. Lot of people Thursday believe that he should have been fired Stephen a Smith did not, feel that way initially I wasn't an advocate of of Rush Limbaugh until somebody let him know the heightened level of sensitivity how inappropriate, that comment may have been and as a result he, refused to show any contrition politics Jimmy the Greek years ago when he got fired the late Jimmy the Greek God rest, his so I wasn't of the. Mindset that Jimmy the Greek should been fight I thought it was. Agreed that somebody could come into a bar knowing he's, clearly inebriated sticking a camera in his face, he makes them stupid comment off the. Air and he get held accountable for that I really felt that was unfair I am not a guy. That sits up here and says well somebody should be fine I did not believe that urban Meyer Zac Smith is, the, one that committed domestic. Violence the heat and the ultimate ir Should be, brought to bear on his, shoulders right up until I saw, that Dan press conference. Christine Brennan of USA today shared her thoughts on Wednesday nights press conference in Columbus Stephen a. you. Have some people who lamented the. Fact that he couldn't even mention the victim's name Courtney Smith couldn't even. Do that you have others like me who highlighted the lack of remorse and contrition then there are others who point. To Ohio states use of medication as an excuse, urban Meyer is use of medication Taught contributing his lack of focus and memory to medication that he's been taking because obviously when he departed from Florida he was, not in good health and, he's been taking medication for years, I don't I don't. Know what is the most egregious thing you find from the presser last night can you share that. With me first of all the. Last one it's so lane it's like the dog ate my homework yes. You know that I couldn't remember it's just ridiculous and I mean I guess if he has a serious mental condition Then I guess. You, probably shouldn't be coaching I mean. That's just the. Fact that trustees, are buying that and and putting that out there That's ridiculous, and we should call it as we see, it in Ohio, ends, of all people commonsense Ohioans would call, that absolutely preposterous but for me the? Worst was the question he was asked I believe I well it was a man reporter who asked what, would you say to Courtney net and that's a softball that you can hit, out of, the park or a fastball right up the, middle, just, grouped it right to you and instead. Of. Staying and thinking about her I'm sorry maybe there's the legal aspects maybe. Can't say sorry maybe you know you've, been schooled on, XYZ okay they're a million words out there and Europe and Myron you right book you. Give speeches and you're the man. And you know so sanctimony is probably. You can't figure out a couple of sentences including mentioning. Her name I thought that was just awful he looked terrible that will go down, I think in, in, history is part of. His legacy I don't think people are gonna. Forget that, for a long time and that Betty I'm sure many many many times it will Especially even as you know you and I talk a. Lot about culture sports and culture that's. Almost are are, beat you and I and and when you, think of the, metoo, movement and when you think of times, up and where we are with women? In our culture and a number of women running for election in the midterms and all this stuff that, he could not put a face and a name and couldn't utter the name, with the, word to a woman who is a victim, of, alleged, abuse I it's clearly abused over all. Of. These years that was one of the darkest hour I think in the. History of Ohio State Pauli off the, field and certainly. One of the worst moments in urban Myers public life and I think we should talk. About it from the rafters and. Shouted out what a horrible horrible display. That was by urban Meyer toward the one person who's. The victim urban Meyer not the Ohio State fans but Courtney's.

"Say rogers eleven at say some fits you want to get your thumbs ready for this because whenever we seem to talk about college football it gets everybody uh all kinds of fired up heather dennis has joined us a few minutes ago talking about the rankings remember rankings reaction by michael junior and i going to sit down on espn radio seven pm eastern on tuesday give us some reactions will also be out on periscope kind of a fun cool saying jordan when you look around the the landscape of college football is is this is difficult for me because i think the committee last week gave us the message that would teams number one number two georgian and alabama respectively is how they look in the winds right and then with clemson and notre dame and the way they fall into the middle of the top ten it looks like okay who have they played because i don't i don't think album splayed anybody but you have to look at it in some points say style matters and playing somebody relevant matters so that being said every weekend takes on a little bit more depth because we're seeing heavy matchups come and then is not just winning it's winning big so like oklahoma for example they go into two oklahoma state that play the bad the bedroom game in all of a sudden you look at it and say they won't buy ten but the gave up a ton of points and nobody played kneedeep it's like i don't know of oklahoma helped themselves are hurt themselves i can't figure out who i expect to take a leap who do you expect to take a leak you know what you mentioned is relevant in in i i don't like it i don't like to fax the teams like alabama were cash early in the year mean they had their backups in in the second quarter at times i don't like a landscape where you have to win by forty never in order to make a statement that shows that whoever making these decisions eason diving enough into what's actually happening and what that is watching film or i know we we had heather on his she talked about i've been in that room were you know all these committee members have access to coaches cuts in film and everything like that just understanding the picture and not just the.

"Anke josh you know where to give credit to that i asked judge onto the madonna one of our researchers works of the sec network i said give me some context here we saw heather dennis put out you know what are some of the common threads of our playoff teams i said what about defense what about the defensive ranks efficiency scoring defense and how these teams have ranked here in the first three years of the college football playoff let's go back to last year every team had both a scoring defense and a defensive efficiency ranked in the top eleven in the country over the last two years the only playoff team of the defensive of efficiency ranked outside the top ten was michigan state is 21st back in two thousand fifteen the worst defense to make the playoff was florida state in 2014 30th in scoring 44th and defensive efficient through they were undefeated they got a three seat remember that in the college football plow oklahoma currently is forty six than scoring defense and fifty second independent dinner usually not like those numbers so let's just say this oklahoma could win out but if those numbers don't get substantially better it would be heart i would be hard pressed on the committee go you know what that's a great college football team that's one of the top four because of the lack of defense so if oklahoma winds out not only do they need the w went out to make the plow they need to get better defensively they can't be winning games forty 138 35 28 whatever that may be to feed the narrative of you know what.

"That hey for this position we know our guys work well if they're between let's say defensive line with this guy's got to be between six three two six seven he needs to be between two sixty five two two nine how big archives what's the difference gave the measurement danes right fears it's it's just like that's a nonqualifier i can't even i can't even look at ya unless you do that and it it's it's amazing it's amazing to me and it's amazing how many people just with 'cause i remember lsu deciding they would loved brandon harris and got the scholarship back from mason rudolf you think that they would like to do that the i think less miles would have liked have done that of this year nicely put keep those questions coming for wednesday and friday this week just make sure you hashtag it with the hashtag welcomes the extra poise did indeed it is however the extra point by far the most talented of the group gets ago today heather dennis let's i was looking around hold off so am i should point is real quick notre dame brian kelly congratulations for finally taking some blame for of foreigners congratulations you know we have the the story on espn dot com he told blazer report had he asked up last year's team because he spent too much time fundraising last season and not enough time overseeing his football programme this justin guys when your head coach after fundraise no i'll know anybody told them that breaking news her so you know what you can you can fire defensive coordinator fivaz's another season you can change your entire staff but until you realize you've got a fund raise an coach football things aren't gonna work it sounds like he's got things in the right chances are he's coaching the fighting irish next year.
