"And just as Bill James came along in the early eighties and people said, well, look at this stuff. I can't leave. Nobody was doing this before. I love it. When I came along in the mid nineties Bill, James wasn't writing the baseball abstract anymore. So I sort of was was blessed with in a sense, new generation of baseball fan who hadn't been exposed to this, they didn't. They weren't there for the ad Strack in early eighties and all of a sudden there's this thing called the internet, and, oh, here's this person who's writing something that nobody else is writing and I kinda like it. This makes sense to me. So to the degree that I was able to reach people in that way, I've always felt very fortunate and yes, gratified. You know, what do you make of those two are still super-resistant. My favorite example of that is a couple years ago hawk Harrelson the White Sox announcer saying the only statistic key cares about is t. f. t. or sorry, TWIT w the whale try win, which is my all time. Favorite statistic. If you've got the TWIT w, what do you make of those people though? Because I think there's a, there's a sort of understanding of people digging their heels in and not liking change. But at some point it feels it's evolved for die as it is with everything else in life. Well, of course. And obviously, when you look at the teams that are successful these days in every sport, they're all rely on antics to some degree. It's it's a question of how much, but all you have to do is read a book about the. Twenty sixteen cubs or the twenty seventeen Astros or the twenty seventeen Philadelphia Eagles. Whomever it might be the using. Forgot forgotten to to know that how big a part of the all the sports analytics has become. And that's why easy to innocence dismiss at that. That's that. That sounds more pejorative than I mean it to, but to dismiss sentiments like hawk Harrelson or Jim caused or John smoltz's or whomever they are in a sense dinosaurs, hey, look into the pejorative, but you know what? I love hawk Harrelson. He's one of my favorite broadcaster because I love the other things he brings to the table. So it was different twenty years ago when. That was actually the the consensus opinion. And then they felt like the enemy innocent and I resented those sorts of people and I didn't. I never done it hawk I was like talk, but that that sort of mindset I resented. It felt like they were trying to keep us in the past, and I knew we couldn't stay in the past, but they were trying to and itself, frankly, in a sense personally insulting to me and I was insulted not to my face, but I, I would be referenced in public as someone who didn't understand baseball didn't understand. People didn't, you know all whatever. Right? And so this was actually a personal thing for me back then, but now it's not because the battle is over, there is no fight in your. Yeah, that's right. I, I don't think I don't think of it personally that way. I think that the people who actually put the teams together, you know, the the, the Jeff loon os and the THEO Epstein's and the Bill James is people actually were in the arena a actually in the business of winning games. Those people one, they actually one they have. They have ws and they have world theories ring. They won. I was just an interested bystander for the most part, but that that those battles are largely largely finished. I wouldn't say that I feel sorry for hawk Harrelson or you know, the people like him who don't really buy in, but they're their analysis has become irrelevant. And yes, they still speak to a certain segment of of of of fans, but that that segment is growing smaller by the day. So we were just talking about this the other day in terms of gambling and the new rules on gambling, allowing the conversations on the air to be different than. They used to be instead of sort of the nod, nod, wink, wink. We can be outright about whether something beat the spread or or whatever else, but there are a lot of people myself included who are gambling novices, who are barely dipping tone, the water..

"F it's Wendy Snyder. At some point we will cut away to the network coverage of the story of rod Rosenstein that's coming up at some point in the next half hour or an hour. All right. Good to know. We are celebrating hawk Harrelson and. Steve you mentioned something that I think your terminology was you're not typically are usually in his camp. Did you say something along those lines? His feeling happy. He's monitoring the live news. We're going to get right. But so some people didn't like hawk. I don't get it. He was kind of polarizing mercy. Mercy is right. He. How can I put it delicately? Alright. So almost everybody who broadcasts sports has a thing or two things that they're known for in terms of just the lingo the way, they say things everybody has a certain homerun call or whatever he can Harrelson had about a dozen of them and on any game day, you you would hear all right? Name is over that was one of stretch. Yeah. That thing right guy, right place. Right time right now he would say that every game. There were there were certain things that he just said all the time and people went. He's the original human Meam. Invented. Meaning. Yeah. He did. He did that. So there were there were people who criticized him for that. He also the other thing about him was in a day and age where they frown on an announcer being quote, unquote, a Homer like he really he would side the game to the White Sox. No question about it. Well, he was there announcer. I understand that. But the way of thinking now is because that used to be a lot more acceptable the guys in the old days. If you're watching a dodgers game the dodgers guys told you from the dodgers standpoint watching an Astros game. They told you now they almost want the game to be a little more well rounded and two sided and there's two schools of thought on that one. Is that that's the way to do it. The other is that it is. So Kenny Harrelson without a doubt, you knew he was a White Sox and. Well, he was very touched by the way was was more than any. Yeah. Ron Santo appaling accepted it from Ron why? And that from hawk I don't know why I don't know why. But with Ron Santo with a thousand people heard Ron doing a cubs game. You knew that he wanted the cubs to win. There's no doubt about it. I've missed him a good guy. Jasmine, do we have some audio of hawk Harrelson signing off if you if there are any words, it's mostly crying. No oh. Oh, yeah. You can play you play one of those do a couple of those. Okay. Hi,.

"Told me it only find for. Who've been in professional baseball, all the parts of eight decades as been Scotland. Tommy Lasorda don's Emmer and they've got SIA and come January first twenty twenty hawk oh, go in. What about about Joe Torry? Joe Torry be one of those guys to Joe Torey joke toy. Joe. Joe Torre was such a big asset that wanted to them when when when bud retired, but was, you know, there's been ten commissioners in baseball. I've been to eight of them. Right? You only missed a Landis in happy Chandler. Right? That's it. Yeah. And that's the only two I missed. I've been. I've seen them all in but about say, was the best Commissioner in my time of eight by far boy Coon did a good job 'cause he has some tumultuous times in baseball when he was a Commissioner and he took care of him, you got a terrific job, but I tell you who has has to be a great Commissioner was bar Giamatti and unfortunately is timely demise took care of that, but but I thought when bud retired that was that was lobbying and pulling Joe tour to become Commissioner because he's. A smart guy and one of the job he did, you know, you know, it's tough to play in New York. Some guys just can't play there and we've seen a lot of players come in there from other towns, successful to New York, and they just didn't do it. Joe manage their and it's the toughest down in sports to manage in. And he just such a great job and he's doing a great job now. I just wish that if he could get more more thirty to do stuff as far as taking care of, you know, length of games if they would put, you know bud. Bud, but Yang shore holes and Joe Torry together in lesson figure it out. They could make, you know, first of all, you're not going to be able to not gonna be able to speed up the game. There's one way to speed up baseball games, and that's you've gotta have control the empire's and baseball does not have control. We don't pies, they have autonomy, and but you if you get Joe west, John Carlos and Joe Torre together and let those guys come up with they could. They could fix that, but Joe is wonderful person. It was a hell of a player to do on the baseball field run. No, no, he could run. He would hit four hundred instead of three would've. He those slowest. Oh, Paul kinetico in there too. Fault him. We're not fleet-footed hawk Harrelson's new book is I did it my way hawk I did it my way I should say written with Jeff snook for triumph, publishing and hawk I could ask you baseball stories gal stories all day long. But before we let you go, he talked about some of the partnerships you had with your fellow broadcasters. And of course you are now known for some time saying things that surprise, people that might not have conformed to notions of political correctness, sometimes inadvertently. And you talk in the book about the reactions from your different broadcast partners when you would say something off color or or perhaps inappropriate? Oh, yeah. Who had partners, seventy five Vic stocks, and that was his rookie is about baseball broadcasters. Well, of course, Nick is become one of the great compass about casters of all time. He can do any sport, but for various gain playing training with the Red Sox and seventy five. We're playing. Montreal shortstop named Tim Foli and so about the fourth inning only plate and dick looks at manny's hockey says, tell me about Tim Foli ASA. Well, he's five. He's got big balls out there and back in, you know, that was a little out of four look at me, put his over his mouth. Then after the game was over, my wife is waiting for me outside, and I walked down and say, Honey, let's go pack. We don't get fired. What was it like working with Steve Stone. Good, good. My favorite of course was, you know, Don Drysdale you know, me Don van skelly and you know. Take something. In fact, he still holds the record for most about movie major league baseball. But besides that, he to me was the best comprehensive baseball announcer. I've ever heard. I learned so much working for the first five years. He knew more about pitching anybody ever talked to..

"Eight got into torn amount and I told him I wouldn't not leave one short first day I seventy five or six, three putts next day I had five three cuts and miss the cut by one shot. So they'll tell you, I good. I was sitting the ball. We're speaking with hawk Harrelson about his varied and fascinating career in sports over the course of the last sixty years. Really his new book is hawk. I did it my way. You're one of those guys who's known everybody who's been around everybody who's been in to every party to every bar has a personal story with every major figure centrally in the world of sports over the last five decades who is the guy or who are the guys who the most. Fun to be around. So many of 'em Arnold course less that aren't went out, but it has for over forty years when the golf course, and he was, I miss that guy. You know he, he was John Wayne and they hills great still great, but it's not the same without and then there will be, but you know, you talk about, I have been blessed Jerry, you know, it's just like like Lou Garrick said, you know his farewell address. He said, you know, today I consider myself to be luckiest man on the face of the earth. Well, that's the way I feel and I've been so forth. I had a wonderful mother. She was married and divorced. She was married to a guy who she divorced when I was young guy and she raised me and she probably some big values and one of the value she told me she don't ever lie and don't ever be afraid to fail. And those are two big things that you know, and she still owes me and she also told me he came up on. Wrong side of the tracks, so to speak and Savannah, Georgia, and and if you did that you were going to have to fight. And she told me, I came home one day. I had a bloody nose, and she said, let me tell you some. So she says, if somebody hits you want him back harder if they if you want to hit them quite. And that's the way I grew up. That's the only thing I knew and to carried it over my life, you know? And there have been chore, the guy who have other mothers as much as idea. Dog actually, nobody knows someone ever other mother more ideas. You've had a charmed life. You've led a charmed life. He's gone to do the things you've wanted to do short of winning a major in golf, the broadcasting aspect of it which you've been doing now for so long. What kind of pleasure do you derive satisfaction? Do you drive from from being a broadcaster? I love I love baseball. And baseball has been really interesting may and all of white socks. This would be my thirty third year with the White Sox broadcasting my in my last year about casting, and I'll tell you what your I have such a again. I've been blessed because of the fact I have seen the game entirely different. You know, you've been around baseball long time and and you know the game and you know what's different game today than it was, you know, twenty thirty forty fifty years ago and you know, come, I'm gonna be with my socks for a long time after just retirement year, but come January first twenty twenty. That'll put me in a in a very elite club and that club being they can only find four guys. I'm sure there's more, but you're right or.

"Looking back now, almost half a century later. How do you view that decision? I can say this. I got about two hundred twenty five thousand dollars. The council checks to prove I cannot play golf. You know. One of the interesting nobody realized what a bad temper I had. You know, nNcholas played a lot with Jack played forty years with Arnold, and they both said, you know, when I retired and came out and went into golf, I both. I couldn't if they didn't know what a bad temper I had. But one of the interesting things. Was in June of nineteen seventy one. I was playing baseball for the Cleveland Indians in July of seventy two played in the British Open and nearly made the cut. I missed it by one shot I had, I hit the balls woes. Anybody in the tournament. Jack, you're was going for the triple crown, but the day before the pack different we had, he was playing tennis with barb, and you've got a cricket as neck and he comes up to me and I, we're gonna play, Bert, Yancey and Tom Weiskopf and a practice round. It comes up to me and says, don't say anything about it. So we get on the golf course and what I had never played with Weiskopf and Jack knew that Jack's probably most cerebal athlete ever met. And he just he told me, says, during the well. As a jackass. If you know, why did you want to hook this up? He said, I'll tell you why. I just wanted to see Weiskopf with react. I, you hit it by will happen, hit it by him on the I Pol. And so, yeah. Yeah, totally doing around the Jack. I'll promise you wants thing, but he's the one that taught me into going over there. I wouldn't wanna go, but we, you know, we're playing together and he said, hey, you gotta go over and qualify for the open. 'cause you're playing good over. Don't you let all American qualifiers I shot seventy six.

"Finley invited Harrelson, visit him in the fancy downtown Kansas City hotel where he lived, and I just couldn't wait to see him saying myself, going to pay ten thousand twelve thousand fifteen thousand. So I walk into a sweet and he's got this table laid out with Danish eggs, bacon, orange juice, milk, and all that stuff. And I noticed, you know, like. A tube. It looked like an empty paper towel tube. He goes, come on inside. He says, you had a pretty good road trip, but I'm gonna show you what you've been doing wrong. He goes over picks up this tube and he had a towel floor like home plate and my heart sank because I knew that it was going to be no raise, and I was right because he didn't even vote the subjects whatsoever. Two years later Finley gave him a chance to earn some extra dough at Yankee Stadium. He said, I need somebody to ride Charlie around the warning track today, Missouri governor Warren Hearns had donated a mule to the as Charles Finley named it after himself. Charlotte, oh, the meal was absolutely when magnificent animals and biggest mule of ever seen. He was gorgeous. Finley, saw an opportunity to market his team by taking his beautiful meal everywhere the as played and asking his players to ride it, the as didn't care to it for. I, but in New York, Finley, finally put his money, whereas ask was and he says, I'll tell you what I'm gonna give whoever does it twenty five bucks..

"The game isn't what it used to be. At least that's what an older fan at Fenway park told me after I bought a ten dollar can of spike seltzer at the game, the other night only games. Gary wallet has the story of guy who would agree at least when it comes to baseball. Ken Harrelson has the benefit of baseball hindsight, the culture of the game of baseball was different in those days. There's no question about that for Harrelson those days began in nineteen sixty three on the morning of June ninth. He was a first baseman for the minor league Portland, beavers until he was woken by a one AM phone call song puck your stuff. You're coming to the big leagues. The caller was tros oh, Finley, the eccentric owner of the Kansas City athlete IX soon. Harrelson. The rookie nicknamed hawk because of his bird like profile was hitting well against some of the best major league pitchers on July thirteen. Breath in a game against the Cleveland Indians went up against one of the greatest of all time. Early wind gusts was his nickname. The aptly named win was playing the last of his twenty three big league seasons and going for his three hundred career victory for the first time up. He sent me a high slider. I had a rocket right back through middle just missed his head, maybe foot foot in the half. So I get back to the dugout and Bobby Del Greco is a an alpha club, and he comes over to me and he uses hockey says, now the next time you face Gus, he said, you'd better hang loose that was baseball speak for expect to knockdown pitch. And I said why? He said, because two things you don't do early wind bun on him and you don't hit the ball through the middle on him. He's well. He's gonna, knock you right on your behind. I said that'll for England or anything and sure enough. I go the plate next. I push right behind my head and my feet straight up in the air and landed on my shoulders win, got his three hundred victory. It was the last of his career. And Harrelson soon learned that he had perhaps a more troublesome opponent. Charlie Finley, the man who signed his paycheck. The minimum salary back in those days was six thousand dollars. In fact, my first two years in the major leagues I made more money shooting pool playing golf in our Muslim. I did play major league baseball. Harrelson continued to play well as a rookie, but he felt he deserved more than the minimum salary. So we requested of meeting with Finley to discuss a raise. This was before the days of high powered agents. One morning after a successful road trip,.

"NFL preseason games more than anything else in sports. I mean, exhibition games. Yes. And one exhibition they were. I'm looking at a list of the passing leaders from Thursday night, and I know most of these guys, the reason that I know them Brandon Weeden Colt McCoy is their whole freaking retreads to Mayfield. Okay. I've heard about him. He got a pretty good night. Carolina started some guy named Taylor Hickey. I don't know who that is, but he threw hundred twenty one yards. The whole list of leaders is made up of guys who at best will be playing renewable two years. So the Boston Red Sox are on pace to win at least one hundred ten games and they recently completed a four-game sweep of the hated Yankees. Will they ever lose again, Charlotte. I don't know what they're beating people drums right now, but they're Penn is pretty average, but it doesn't matter because they're hitting nail out of all the ale. East race is just about over. Are there any other divisional races that you've had your eye on the the fact. The Oakland as are in contention because I have absolutely no idea how they're doing. It plus are very, very good baseball team. And now they're in the the playoff hunt for sure. And once again, the move of the Houston Astros the American League has changed everything because the Houston Astros came to the American League just as they were getting really good sad news from the hockey world. Charlie, Chicago Blackhawks great. STAN mikita died Tuesday at the age of seventy eight. Do you have any good STAN mikita stories for us? Not particularly just remember STAN makida as being overshadowed on all Black Hawk teams by Bobby Hall because Bobby Hall had the big slapshot in the blonde hair, and he was the matinee idol. Kinda guy staying Makita was the all time work loss. And STAN mikita is now the all time leading scorer for the Blackhawks, including Bobby Hall with whom he laid he, he one lady being twice. He was tough without being dirty. He was everything the nineteen sixties and nineteen seventies NHL was all. So we have what I like to call a Florida man story. In this week's list, there was a south Florida Gulf pro named Tom Fleetwood who was surprised to see a six-figure direct deposit. His Wells Fargo account last Friday until he realized that the PJ's European tour had accidentally paid out prize money from the twelfth place finisher at the British Open his name Tommy Fleetwood. What are the off the American Tom Fleetwood who didn't win one hundred twenty thousand pounds at the reason for Chopin has handled it pretty well. I think look in his Bank account and their one hundred fifty, four thousand dollars in it a right above fourteen dollar transaction. He made it WalMart, and he said, I'm a pretty laid back guy. This is told to golf dot com. Most people would be jumping up and down. I was like met. Yeah. I mean, it has to be a mistake. I mean, you have to, you have to look at that amount and say something screwed up. Actually. No, you have to look at amount. And say, I wanna bins right now. Quick rushed to the store. I just remember the old monopoly card Bank error on your favorite, collect under dollars. Thank you and your favorite? Collect hundred and fifty thousand dollars PGA tour and your favorite. That's right. So finally, Charlie and I don't know how you guys miss this last week, but the arena Football League's Washington valor, when the twenty eighteen AFL title. So I'm assuming the valor must have been great during the regular season, right. Hey, first of all, in arena, football, anything is possible including the two and ten Washington valor going all the way through the playoffs and winning the arena football league title largely because they're only four arena football teams left, Garret..

But now the week's news Charlie Pierce, Hello, Charlie, Nora, the NC double a. announced a list of reforms, Wednesday in one new rule would allow high school and college basketball players who have been deemed quote, elite unquote to hire agents. Another would allow college athletes who don't get drafted to return to school. Do we have to hold our noses and give the NCW credit for this when Charlie? No, because the fundamental inequity of major college basketball still exists, namely that all of these rules are designed to keep you from having to pay the hired, help these rules that were put through with apparently no input from either the NBA or USA basketball. Even though one of the rules assigns new responsibility to say basketball, that USA basketball doesn't even want this is the NC double a. going rogue because it's being caught up in FBI investigation. That's almost as ridiculous as the. Itself, they can't get out of their own way on this. So couple hundred state fans including the father of Cowboys running back. So what I'm wondering Charlie is what could possibly lead these people to believe that Meyer is the victim here football, you know what? The human mind football twists fume in mind, especially the male human mind into all kinds of different weird shapes. And I don't mean physically on the field. I mean as a fan places like Columbus, Ohio, and as we learn state college, Pennsylvania and one hundred other places, coach literally can shoot somebody in the main street on campus glud and you'll get a rally together supporting him because he won eight games last year, staying on football, a little birdie told me Charlie that this is your favorite. "She knew she had made the right choice. I would not have been able to handle the the kind of language. Let's say the I was not used to hearing at my house when I was growing up, I just wouldn't have been able to do it. It's interesting that you feel that way because on the one hand, you are describing yourself as this very opinionated child as very independent child as not an afraid child at all? Well, I fought with the boys all the time when I was in school, but I would go home and cry about it because they made fun of me, you know, but how much of that could you take? If it was constant by grown men whom you'd, I'd allies all your life. One two had a long and rewarding career in public relations and marketing. She says, she's proud of all the women. She sees on TV talking about sports, but she definitely did not. Go to work every day, wishing that she had become sports writer. When I realized over the past forty years, is that most likely had I not taken that advice and I tried to break in through that glass ceiling that existed in the late sixties. Early seventies, I probably would have hated sports. And if I had hated sports, my life would have been completely different. Where would I be? Wanda doesn't live near Boston anymore, but she's still a fan of the Red Sox and on August fifth, two thousand twelve. When the SOX hosted the Minnesota Twins, she got the chance to audition to become the public address announcer at her beloved Fenway park. It was basically the thrill of my life to be up there in that booth and say things like now Badding number fifteen. The second baseman, Dustin Pedroia. You know, I mean, now it's amazing. I was amazing. And if I didn't love baseball still, I'm going to donate that. Recently, Wanda Fisher published her first book a novel set in baseball. One of the characters is a minor league ball player who grew up in Weymouth, Massachusetts, do buses at train and trolley ride from Fenway park. When the novel was finished, Wanda sent a copy to wreck Ryecart I did. I found him through Facebook. And did he respond? No, you didn't respond to me yet, but I do expect to hear from him. I mean, sand like you're thankful for the advice that wreck gave. I am. I am thankful. You know, sometimes I will just be driving by a failed and I'll see a Babe Ruth game and I'll pull over and I'll watch it for a few innings and somebody next meal save which one of those kids out there is your grandson, and I'll be like none of them. "After that one does mother let her go to the ballpark on her own as long as she brought home a ticket, Anna completed scorecard to show that she actually had attended the game. One does mom didn't know how to read a scorecard, but wanted she learned from the best. We always went for batting practice. We went early. I was filling out my scorecard with the lineups and Kurt gowdy. You remember who Kirk out he was Kurt gowdy. He was the voice of the Red Sox from nineteen fifty one through nineteen sixty six. He came over to me and he said, do you know how to fill up that scorecard? And I was like, no, a new said, well, let me show you how we do it in the both. And he showed me how to draw this little diamond and how to put in when a person hit a single and if they were caught stealing and all this other stuff. And he said, now the next time I see you. I'm going to make sure you're doing it right petrified. I thought he was going to come back and give me forty lashes or something if I did it wrong, and he came back a few weeks later when we were batting practice and he looked down and he said, how's it going? And I said, I think I'm doing good, and he said, okay, well, show me then I showed me goes, you're doing fine. Yeah, you doing good. I just thought that was absolutely fabulous. You know that Kirkcaldy taught me how to score and he gave me a so that must've really inspired you to keep going. It did. Yeah, it did. Along the way. One got the idea that maybe she could be more than just a fan of her beloved Red Sox after all. She was a good writer. Her first letter to the editor praising the local lifeguards was published when she was in the second grade. I thought, you know, I would really like to be a sports writer, and I think that I could do it even though I'm a woman, Wanda went to the library and look through the index cards to try to figure out if there were any women writing about sports. She found a few, but not many. My mother said, you might as well try to be president then be a woman sports writer. And I said, well, maybe I should try to be president. I don't know. You know. When she got to high school, Wanda started writing about baseball for the school newspaper. She compared her articles to the ones the boys were writing. She thought hers were better, then came the summer of nineteen sixty five. Neither one of my friends who was one of my baseball companions was available to go to the game. So I went by myself, Wanda state until the very end of the game. She mingled in the players parking lot getting autographs. And as she was leaving, she spotted Rick Reich heart. And I said, oh, aren't you the center fielder for the California Angels, Rick Ryecart? And he said, well, yes, so him Wanda and recruit headed across the bridge Kenmore square. Rick was on his way to his hotel, Wanda needed to take the trolley to the train to the two buses that would take her home. I said, my goal was to be a sports writer, and I remember him actually stopping walking, and I think it was because he knew I was going to get on the train. If we kept walk. Talking and he wanted to make sure that he got his. He wanted to make sure I got the point that's when Rick Ryecart center fielder for the California Angels told Wanda Fisher sixteen year old from Weymouth, Massachusetts, something that would change the course of her life. You know, you seem like a really nice girl. He said, you know, the guys really don't want women in the locker room or the clubhouse, and they're going to give you hard time. I don't want to say, don't do it. I'm just telling you that this is what you're going to be up against an I thanked him and he went to Kenmore hotel or the vault play state. And I went down into the subway to get on the trolley on the long ride home, Wanda thought about what Reich heart had said. She decided to follow his advice and not pursue a career in sports writing. Later win, Jim Bowden's book ball, four came out and she read about what went on and baseball's club houses..

"The hall. All the coolest parties are the ones that you have to attend right. Tyler. I'm curious, hear what you think. I, I mean, this is dumb. This. And you know the thing about how dumb it is that it's an NFL specific, a football specific type of dumb. Everything that's ingrained into the culture. Formatting football within America is mostly dumb. And so of course, the football truest fans, a lot of them are gonna be like, of course, you people should be forced to show up for an award. We barely wanna give you. Okay. Dog that's cool, right? So let's side on the other side of this is that the hall actually believes what they're doing, isn't the most ludicrous thing ever Terrell Owens one of the most disrespected athletes. We've seen across sports in the last maybe twenty years or so. He has some actual real gripes with the way that he has been treated. The people who are actually treating him this way, and the majority of white writers who have been writing about him as if he's subhuman, because that's exactly what we think of football to begin within the players in the pro seats there. And so if that's always been the case, this should absolutely make sense from the system of football. That's always been this whole tra- conservative vehicle of of crap. Right? We know it's dome they know it's dumb. But it, oh, probably still pass and still be dumb. I agree with you. I think it is dumb. I was surprised that they sort of didn't have the self awareness to not do this and put that idea in a box to never be spoken of. Again, it was another opportunity that was seized quickly to make an example of Teo. Now I know the NFL and pro football hall of Famer technically separate entities, but the board of the hall is made up of plenty of NFL connected folks. And it's just another example of the NFL creating a stupid controversy and not coincidentally. In fact, there's an African American athlete whose outspoken at the center of the controversy. I hope you guys are both sitting down for this one because my name is northern theology, and I believe in the two thousand eighteen Cleveland Browns. So I would say that I'm on the bandwagon, but that is the wrong vehicular metaphor to us. I believe in the Browns for one reason and it is because of an RV, the Browns quarterback. So that's Baker Mayfield. Tyrod Taylor drew Stanton and Brogan Robak are sharing an RV as a sort of clubhouse during training camp. It is for quarterbacks only Mayfield was in charge of procuring the RV before camp and Robak as the guy who's last on the depth chart fluffed the pillows, any stocks, the fridge with healthy snacks recommended by the team nutritionist. His idea of pop tarts was turned down. So that tells me that Cleveland's got a well rested well-fed group at the most important position on the field. And I think what more could you ask for now you might say receiver help, but I'm choosing not to think about that right now besides Mayfield look great in the first preseason game, and we all know how much that means..

"In the summer of nineteen sixty five. One to Fisher was a sixteen year old baseball fan who wanted to become a sports writer, but a major leaguer had some advice for her. He said, you know, the guys really don't want women in the locker room or the clubhouse. They're going to give you a hard time that's coming up on only a game from NPR. Asthma, hey, Scott nother crazy week. We've got North Korea. Yep, we got Russia midterms, and of course President Trump and what happens whenever there is crazy news at our ups, we pop into the studio and break it down to make sense. So if you see a headline, we've discussed it, it's the PR politics podcast. I'm nor prince Yati it's time for three stories. You should know this week. We're going to talk about the president, the pro football hall of fame and an RV. I'm joined by Espy nations. Tyler tines. Hey, Tyler. What's up by ESPN's Don van Natta junior. Hello, Don, low, Nora, Tyler. We're going to go to you first. So basically, obviously there's talk of the town has been that on CNN LeBron James was sitting down for an interview with the new school. The who's opening and Don limit asked him. If he ever sit down with the president, he has asked him a variety of questions about the presidency about how sports the unifying factor in so many other things. And it wasn't the best messaging from LeBron James, because he sort of jumbled at least his understanding of how sports are with the actual actuality of the unification powers sport. But that started another new cycle between the president while he attacks black athletes to which he was saying that Don lemon is stupid and LeBron James is too bad. He prefers Michael Jordan. This is the thing that we want to constantly see until Donald Trump is not president. Clearly, President Trump sees this as a winning issue, two players to Caen Thursday night in a preseason game. They were both Miami Dolphins and yet Friday morning Trump tweeted out twice about this issue. And before long I think the president's tweets may outnumber the number of kneeling players. He told Jerry Jones last year. This issue lifts me. This is a culture war issue for him. A losing issue for the NFL Trump is now in a position where this gets traction with his base, and he's going to continue to try to provoke players to continue to take a knee and undercut the NFL site think that the parallel with the anthem issue and it's almost ironic that I caught the anthem issue is a good one because they're. Is a jumbling of messaging in both cases because the thing about the anthem issue is that it took on this idea that it's strictly about the national anthem which it never really was to begin with. It was about player's protesting racial inequality and police brutality against minorities. And it struck me that there's kind of a similar trap in this debate with LeBron potentially by design on the part of the president, which is that it's so easy to point out. The good works that LeBron has done that. A lot of people rushed to his defense by listing them and in some ways that's kind of beside the point because LeBron support of his community really shouldn't be up for debate and putting it up for debate kind of loses. The important point here, which is that the president seems unable to tolerate black athletes who have success and are comfortable exercising their strength in their own personal agency. I just think the point here is not to jumble so many of these different factors. It's great LeBron James open the school, but that by itself has to be. Unpacked in repurpose in, we need to make sure that's all good. At the same time when the president attacks black athletes, it's improper to think that we shouldn't have the conversations. Black people are being disportionately murdered by police. We're still unequal to white people at almost every single level at this country, and other people of color are going through the exact same thing by different measures standards in..

"To bring life back to this ballpark, and it didn't take long for savannahs minor league team to offer that opportunity. Within the next year, we heard that they couldn't draw fans couldn't have success in savannah. They needed a new stadium in the city when it build them new stadium and they were leaving Jessie and Emily had bought a majority share. The guests Donia grizzlies earlier that year and they had just put the finishing touches on their dream house. We built a fire pit of bar. We had a hot tub back there. It was the hang out place, but Grayson stadium was up for grabs and the newlyweds couldn't resist in two thousand sixteen. They bought their second franchise in the coastal plain league and began building a new team in savannah. We started calling everyone in this community. We're here, we're going to do baseball. Why we're going to make it fun. We're going to have tons of entertainment and what happened creeks. I mean, nothing. No one believed us. Jesse says the team sold just one season ticket in its first two months. They were hardly bringing in any money. So after that phone call, we're completely out of money are only option left to sell her house. Jesse Emily sold their dream house and moved to savannah. From there, they put every penny they had into the team, even if it meant their new living arrangements were a significant step down. I actually went and looked at this duplex. I and it was horrible, disguised Asti most crap. It worst fixer upper pay us indoor and take him in. And he just shook his head now and ran back out. But after talking it through and realizing that this is truly all we could afford, we decided to buy her socks on the floor was so disgusting lift one leg up and over the toilet and over to sit down because your knees touching the wall. One night, my wife oke up screaming and there was a cockroach on my face. We didn't wanna tell people closest to us how much we were suffering and struggling. We hadn't even named the taking. Jesse. Emily believed that a great team name could turn things around. They announced a naming competition in the local newspaper for fans to submit suggestions. Jesse Emily wanted something unique, no generic animal names or weather phenomena something for savannah to unite behind. Over one thousand people wrote in, but one submission stood out the savanna open Anna's. The ideas came quickly. This could great mascot name split. We could have senior citizen dance team called the bananas. We could ever promotion where we throw bananas from the top deck. People catch it in their pants. It's called banana. The pants are slow. Go be open, and we came of all the ideas that we have to do it on February twenty. Fifth, 2016, Jessie, and Emily announced the new team name within minutes. Savannah, bananas were number one trending on Twitter and merchandise orders were flooding in from all over the country. But the savannah community had a different response. We guide crucified. They were saying the owners should be thrown out of town. You guys are an embarrassment to the city. You'll never sell a ticket. Please leave our town. Who are you guys? Who do you think you are. For the bananas, however, all press was good. Press the team sold out its opening night game. A lot of it was people to saying, let me go check out these crazy people. They're probably gonna fail. This is probably going to be a joke, but regardless they bought the tickets and they showed up. Over four thousand fans arrived at Grayson stadium for the bananas, June second season opener for once everything was going to plan until the rain. It's just what happens in the baseball world. Sometimes the gods are not in your favourite disobeyed downpour that you would never. It was unbelievable. The bananas waited almost three hours to begin play, but even after the delay there, sellout crowd was still in their seats. There was four thousand people still there waiting to watch the savannah bananas. It was clear from the game itself that people weren't staying to see quality baseball, and we made six hours. We're letting one's left and right. They stayed for the show. We have a break dancing first base coach, a thirty piece, pep band playing to final countdown, a rocky or uptown funk. It's a nonstop entertainment experience. Our.

"This is only a game. I'm nor prince Yati. I think it makes sense to start this week's show by quoting my boy, William Shakespeare RIP more specifically a little play called Romeo and Juliet. You may know it as I do as the source material for a little ditty called love story by Taylor swift. But I digress in act two scene to one of my personal faves Juliet says to Romeo what's in a name that which we call a rose by any other word would smell sweet. Well, I'm sorry. Juliette and I don't mean to pile on because I know you're dealing with a lot right now, but you're wrong names do matter. And only games. Matthew stock has the story to prove it. Jesse an early coal where at a friend's wedding in New Jersey, when the CEO of their business called with bad news Jesse, we just overdrafted our count. We're completely out of money for the first time. Really. We had completely failed in how do you run out of money and not have a backup plan. A few months earlier, Jessie and Emily had bought a collegiate summer league baseball team in Savannah, Georgia. They had already taken on millions of dollars in debt and opening day was still months away on the drive home from New Jersey to North Carolina. Jesse, and Emily talked about what they could do to keep their new team afloat. And Emily came up with a plan. She's Harney said, we've no other options. We have to sell our house. You is in the back of our minds the whole drive. But it took me saying it for us both to accept that. That was really our only option left. We were not ready to give up on this. This was not just he's first experience with failing baseball team in two thousand eight as a twenty three year old. Bachelor. He was hired as the general manager of guests. Donia grizzlies I showed up that first day the team was only averaging a couple hundred fans of game. I found out that the team had lost over one hundred thousand dollars the previous year, and I found out that there was two hundred sixty eight dollars in the Bank account right away. Jesse started calling local businesses to drum up sponsorships. Most weren't interested and some had never even heard of the grizzlies. I was like, what have I got myself into? I mean, the team had been there, but nobody cared. So Jesse went to the team owner with a new idea. Ken, we can no longer be a baseball team. We need to be a circus in maybe a baseball game breakout and luckily didn't fire me and he said, we got up into lose Jesse called a group of his college friends, and they started brainstorming ideas to draw fans to grizzlies games. Things were about to. Get crazy in gastonia. We came up with flatulence fun night where we actually gave away Whoopi cushions at the gate, and we had a farting contest on the field beam, burrito, eating contest, salute to underwear night. If anybody wore their underwear on the outside of their pants in came in, they got a free ticket. George Bush was the president in his term was over. So what do we do? We offered him an internship. Jesse also brought the players into the fun. They started handing out programs before warm-ups and doing choreographed dances in between innings. It started getting a lot of buzz and that's when the attendance started skyrocketing. It really became bigger than we even imagine. People started hearing about Jesse and the grizzlies among them was a young woman named Emily McDonald my boss at the time heard Jessie, speak at a conference, and she actually left the room and called me and said, I met the guy that you're gonna. Marry family was working for a minor league baseball team in Gusta Georgia. Like Jesse. She also believed that fan Centric entertain. -ment was the secret to success in baseball. The two started exchanging emails and sure enough overtime does kinda got to know each other and fell in love. And then I ended up moving together Dona and working for the team with him. I will always remember the first time I walked into that gastonia ballpark Jesse was teaching the players the thriller dance on the field in Texier oh, by the way, he was in a block tuxedo..
